Our Story Nerina’s name comes from the indigenous South African flower, Nerine Filifolia. This delicate, yet enduring pink flower brings colour to the open grasslands and humid areas in the Eastern Cape, Transkei, Swaziland, Mpumalanga and the Free State. It takes three years for this bulbous to bloom for the first time during autumn – and likewise most Nerinas are rooted here at our home in Stellenbosch for about three years before they need to exit into the world and start blooming in their separate careers.
Nerina hosted our first residents in 1968. The residence was only completed in 1972 and for the first four years the residents had to use the back entrance next to the bicycle stands, as the front door was not yet complete. Mrs Rabie was Nerina’s first residence
head.
Her
dog,
Brutus,
was
a
beloved
resident
of
the
house
and
unfortunately passed a tragic death. He is layed to rest in Nerina’s soil where he still lies in peace in the purple shade of our beautiful Jacaranda with our resident owls reminiscing over his memory.
Mrs. Kritzinger joined Nerina as residential head in 1995 and had to bid us farewell when she got married in 1999. Tannie Annette du Plessis has been deeply planted in our hearts as residential head and House Mother since July 1999. Although greeting Aunty A. was a difficult and heartfelt goodbye, we are overjoyed to welcome our new residence head, Joy Petersen. Her name is true to her joy-filled spirit and within the first few weeks she managed to capture our hearts.
Today Nerina’s heart blooms with pride for our residence – a progressive and innovative home-away-from-home in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch. We stand for respect, integrity, Ubuntu and potential development.
In this house, true to the roots of our name, Nerinas prosper and flourish.

Dear Nerina, What a year it has been!
Rough winds have shaken us to the core, clouds of sorrow have drifted over us and painful strikes were made to our hearts. At times campus was heavy with grief as we greeted friends much too soon. But when our hearts were filled with rage for the injustices in our world, Nerina comforted us with warmth and compassion. Nerina made the light keep on pouring in.
But after all the trauma and turmoil, we not only survived; we endured it. We grew through it. We bloomed after it.
In the end we have truly prospered and flourished in so many different ways and along the road we found joy in small and seemingly insignificant things: Nagbreek taking third place at Vensters, Nerina having the best MolassesĂŞr on main campus, our sport teams performing exceptionally well and overall just growing in our relationships with each other.
Looking back at this difficult year, I see blessing and friendship shining like a silver lining around a dark cloud. But the cloud has also changed: it is no longer a cloud carrying fear and sadness. It is a cloud carrying waters of life - the drops that will fall on our seeds and help us bloom in the year to come. When it seemed like everything was conspiring to uproot us, I realised how firmly we are planted in the house with the beautiful quad.
I see us holding hands in the shadow of our purple fortress, singing our house song and believeing in a better tomorrow.
May this next season of Brutus be a pure and honest reflection of Nerina's vision and values. May we bring you joy, love, laughter and nostalgia in this coming year.
Nerina, rest well. Plant your seeds and get ready to bloom in 2020!

CARE TIPS: 1. Make a conscious effort to visit other people in res. 2. Make your room a representation of who you are, a safe space and a place to make memories.

CARE TIPS: 1. Invest time and energy in your room decorations - you're going to spend a lot of time there. You might as well make the space look and feel pretty. 2. Ginger tea cures everything from a cold to a sore heart. 3. Live your best life - you only get to do this once.
MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR ROOM: A can opener (for tuna), steam iron, prestik, small sewing kit (you'll thank me in Huisdans-season!)

TIPS FOR FUTURE VIC-RESIDENTS: Eating your meals in res always ends up in marvellous conversations with people you haven't seen in a while! Walk to the library and have study dates with your Nerina fam. Study in the Rec Hall. Once in a while go shower in another section's bathroom. Eat meals together in the quad or on the balconies. USE THE SPACES WE HAVE.
EXTRA TIPS: If you have a car, provide lifts to and from events -especially for the first years! Go out of your way to reach out to the first years. Be their friend and get to know them. there is so much growth that happens between first and final year - don't hesitate to share your stories, experience and outannie-wisdom!
