Nerina Amiga By Megan Eksteen You came back from that horrible tut class. Your average is even pulling down your smile. You miss home, the smell of fresh flowers, warm cooked meals and a loving hand stroking your back telling you everything is going to be okay. Draping yourself over the bed, wishing this never-ending day will pass, the stench of your aging dishes adds to your misery, because you left it till the “next” time you cook – again. Not even a clean mug to make that ‘saving myself’ cup of coffee. Then you realise, your roomie used the last cappuccino sachet.

Never would you have thought, that a simple handwritten note, could clear the destructive, negative and toxic mood you were stuck in. The next morning the demanding life as a student rushes off with you again, almost forgetting about the new precious treasure that is tucked away in your drawer, then, later that evening, AGAIN, another little surprise is left JUST FOR YOU. - Nerina Amiga -

This act of friendship, kindness, love and care means the world to us at Nerina. It is a way of saying, “I’m thinking about you, I care about you, I “… the stench want to be involved in Everything about res of your aging your happiness, your worries and your magic and university is dishes …” moments, I want to starting to pile up support you and my and all you really want to do is take a nice long door is always open for you. I bath, which is completely out want to show you what is important to me.” of the question, in any way. Forcing yourself to face the reality of the intimidating dishes, you notice something unusual outside your bedroom door. At first you think… this is a mistake, who on earth would leave such a wonderful, thoughtful little gift outside my door? Then you see it, YOUR name BOLD & CLEAR, it’s not a mistake, it ís for you!

Nerina Amiga is such a powerful friendship builder, binding us in a loyal, safe and lovely sisterhood. THEN vs NOW Molassesêr 2019 By Mia de Villiers It was the ultimate sing and dance off between “then” and “now”. Backstreet Boys vs One Direction. The Spice Girls vs Charlie Puth. When all was said and sung, the battle ended by combining the 80s version and the modern version of the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody. We were already so happy when we heard that Nerina made it to the finals. When we found out we placed third, we couldn’t contain our excitement. A few words from the molassestars: “My most memorable moment from molassesêr was when a few other girls and I just spontaneously started singing a few of the molassesêr songs in the hallways one night after practice.” - Stefanie (then) “After our performance at Majuba, I was trying to take a picture of Serlisha and Dané when one of their “soldiers”, that stood outside the door like a real rigid palace guard, photobombed us.” - Gabi (now) “I didn’t know most of the words to “Smooth Criminal”, so every time when we started singing it I would go ‘de de de de dum dum de de dum dum something something’”. - Serlisha (then) “I hit a complete blank during the Irene performance and forgot one of my lines.” - Edna (then) “I loved seeing and interacting with the other first years again after welcoming.” - Elrette (now) “The funniest parts of molassesêr was the moments when people forgot the words to songs or dance moves. I loved seeing their facial expressions and couldn’t stop laughing.” - Laro (now)

“My favourite part of molassesêr was hearing Huber sing for the first time (100% had me blown away every time).” - Serlisha (then) “The most memorable moment of molassesêr wasn’t really any specific moment, but rather a feeling. It was that feeling you got after you sang that last song at 120% and you knew it was worth it.” - Danielle (then) When asked where our best performance was, everyone said, “The one at Irene!” And what might have been the molassesêr group’s favourite song? You guessed it … “BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!” A few words from our writer, director and drummer extraordinaire, Francis: “I knew Nerina would podium at the finals. The girls’ energy was addictive and their attitude spot on! It was an honour to work with them. I loved hearing their ideas and seeing their enthusiasm.”

Molassesêr 2019 was an amazing experience with life long memories made. It’s crazy to think all the fun we have now is actually already someday’s then.

CRITICAL ISSUES | 07

We Might all be Mad: the Art of Practicing Mental Health By Embeth du Toit “Have I gone mad?” asked the Hatter. Alice replied, “I’m afraid so. You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.” Over the years many people who suffer from mental illnesses have been labelled as “crazy”, “weird” and “freaks”. They have been marginalised, humiliated and mislead into believing that they are not worthy of the term “normal”. But as we know, mental illness is a serious issue and more people suffer from some sort of mental health problem than we realise – and would like to admit. Mental health is such an integral part of our lives and it is about time that we realise this and start acting according to it. Practicing good mental health in our lives is part of the art of living.

Despite popular belief, mental illness is not only synonymous with drastic disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and psychopathy. One of the most serious mental health problems is STRESS and the scary part is that we all suffer from it at one stage or another. It is extremely important to realise that just because a problem is common, it doesn’t mean that the effects are any less significant. Other disorders include substance abuse disorders, eating disorders, PTSD and anxiety disorders Mental health is not the absence of an illness or mental disorder. It is the continuous process of looking after your mental state which works together with emotional, spiritual and physical well-being. Dealing with mental health issues is a very daunting and challenging experience. Here are some tips on how to handle these delicate situations when… 1.

You find yourself suffering from stress:

MAKE LISTS - We usually start stressing when we feel out of control. So even though this sounds redundant and useless, writing down a to-do list helps you to prioritise and feel in control again. BREATHE - When it all just seems way too much and you are paralysed by the stress you are under. Close your eyes and take deep breaths. The oxygen you get in actually helps your brain to function better – this has helped me in many exams where I felt the “blankstrike” approaching. EXERCISE - We are so privileged in the beautiful Stellenbosch. To help you reduce your stress levels, go for a jog on the picturesque trails in Jonkershoek. The breath-taking views will be enough to help you regroup and get a new perspective. Remember Muis’s words: “Your own race, own pace, own lane.” LAUGH - There’s always a funny story going through the halls of Nerina. If you hear giggles or those wonderful out-of-the-stomach laughs somewhere down the hall, don’t hesitate to join in on the fun. It’s amazing what a laugh or two a week can do for your health. 2.

Your friend suffers from mental illness

This is a much more sensitive topic and issue to deal with. Depression, eating disorders and suicidal thoughts are some of the problems which are much more common under young women than we would like to admit. Reality is that most people who have friends who attempted to commit suicide, were not even aware of their friends’ problems. So if your friends might display signs of mental illness: MAKE THEM FEEL LOVED - You do not have to become your friend’s personal psychiatrist. On the contrary, if you

create a loving and open space in which they can feel comfortable sharing their emotions with you, it will accomplish much more than you trying to convince them of their worth. Therefore: DON’T PUSH IT - Nagging your friends to share their feelings when they aren’t ready can push them over the edge. Dealing with mental health problems is very taxing and usually these women feel unworthy, shameful and fearful. Let them come to you by making them feel safe and loved. SUGGEST PROFESSIONAL HELP - When your friends has opened up to you about their mental state, you have to recommend that they get professional help. We need to break the stigma that exists around getting help for mental health problems: IT IS NOT A SIGN OF WEAKNESS BUT OF SELF-CARE AND SELFLOVE! Mental health affects each and every one of us. It is an ongoing process of self-care and self-love. Therefore, please do not neglect your personal well-being because you do not fit a clinically diagnosed mental illness. The truth is, no matter how hard we try and fight it: WE ARE ALL “MAD”. And that is not a bad thing at all. In fact, we have to learn to love ourselves amidst all of the madness inside. It is what makes us human. In the light of March 2019 being INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH I want to share the following with you: Always be sensitive to the struggles that someone else might be facing. Stupidity doesn’t exist; different intelligence does exist. Weirdness doesn’t exist; different personality types do exist. A disorder is not a choice. The choice is in how we handle it. Therefore, I urge you, Nerina: LOVE before you JUDGE.

10 Pick-me-up Quotes Tackling Term 2 By Rozaan Müller As term 2 approaches it’s time for academics to pick up as well (this is an exam term after all – sorry if the reminder was too soon). It’s easy to get swiped up in the whirlwind of assignments, tests, Turnitin deadlines, coffee dates and other social encounters and events. Then just switch to autopilot and fight for survival. In my opinion everyday is #Quote-Of-The-Day day. Here are 10 quotes to help you keep the perspective during the hussle of campus-life. Jot them down in your diary, pin them on your pinboard or stick them on your mirror. These 10 wise reminders is for your use to keep you motivated and pick you up in term 2.

A Little Motivation How to feel better on the inside when your outside life becomes too hectic. By Aimée Timms The one emotion you are guaranteed to feel at university is disappointment. Yes, it sucks and the truth is a bitter pill to swallow. The best thing you can do for yourself is to learn how to handle disappointments, because, unfortunately, they will be a reasonable part of your journey. One way of avoiding academic setbacks is by setting realistic goals. I’m not saying you can’t get an A, because if you work smart and hard enough you are guaranteed success, but rather focus on setting smaller, more realistic goals and pacing yourself. The most important thing at university should not be your grades but yourself. Take care of your body by eating healthy, staying hydrated, exercising and getting enough sleep.

If you wake up well rested, you’ve already started your day on the right foot. Yoga and meditation have been proven to help with relaxation and stress management, but if you don’t have time for exercise then simply taking a walk, talking to a friend or getting fresh air is good enough. Sometimes it’s necessary to close your eyes and just breathe. Don’t be afraid to empower your-

times feeling good about yourself

It’s guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s faces. But also remember to surround yourself with people who have a good influence on you, care about and support you. Always remember to reach out if you need help. Sometimes our stress cannot simply go away through relaxing or learning something new and that’s okay. Seeking help is not a form of weakness, but a sign of STRENGTH. It means that you value yourself and that you are choosing YOU – because YOU matter and YOU belong. The last and most important thing

The Gratitude Mindset By Rentia Fourie Research was done on the effects gratitude has in our biology. This shows how being thankful increases our longevity, our ability to use our imagination and our ability to solve problems. An attitude of gratitude leads to the feeling that life is worth living, which brings mental health benefits in a positive feedback loop that leads to more resilience. Counting your blessings now makes it easier to recognize them later, because your mind will get better and better at the process of building a positive and grateful mindset.

Gratitude Mindset Activation Tips: 1. Gratitude begins with an awareness of whether you have an attitude of gratitude. Thus, intentionally and critically observe your thinking to determine if an attitude of gratitude is part of it. 2. Do you spend more time counting your blessings or more time focusing on what is missing from your life? 3. Are you thankful? 4. Think about what you say before you say it, and if you have already begun to think something negative, watch what you say and catch those thoughts, change them, and say

something positive before you start complaining and damaging you brain!

STUDY TIPS Believe in Yourself and you are Halfway There By Aimée Timms 1. Study smart not long.

2. Get into a routine.

3. Study space

Just like learning to ride a bike or practicing a sport, studying has to occur through repetition. Instead of studying for five hours at a time, rather revise for 30 minutes each day over the course of a few weeks. This will ensure that you regularly go through your work and you will retain the information, instead of cramming the night before.

By setting up specific times to study each day, learning will be easier because your brain will be more focused in those moments. This will also ensure productivity and motivation. It is better to focus on one topic per study session, instead of trying to retain all your work at once. Focus on one issue at a time and use flash cards as a way to remember what you have studied.

Create a designated study space, whether it will be at your desk in your room or somewhere else in res or on campus. Try to keep your study space as clear as possible, only keeping the things that you will need for that module with you. To create a studious mood, listen to monotonous sounds like rain sounds or ASMR. It has been scientifically proven that listening to background noises helps you focus more than rhythmic sounds.

Microwave Masterpiece Recipes 5 Res Recipes Guaranteed to Make Your Mum Proud… Firstly, 5 TIPS FOR USING MICROWAVES IN RES  Cover your food when possible – Cover with a plate or paper towel so that you have less mess to clean.  Do a test run – All microwaves heat up food at different rates. For the recipes below, cook on the minimum time suggested, give your food a stir and see if the food is hot/cooked through. If not, put it back in the microwave for a further minute and repeat the process.  Chop food into small pieces – When the recipe calls for chopped ingredients, chop at small as you can. That way, the food will cook quicker.  Clean up after yourself – There’s nothing more gross than finding a microwave that’s been left in a hideous dirty state. It’s common courtesy in a residence to clean up after yourself.  Don’t put anything metal in the microwave Okay, we know you knew that but it’s just a reminder. We don’t want a blown-up microwave now do we?

Quesadillas

Quesadillas gives you the opportunity to get rid of all the left-overs in your fridge. The only important ingredient is of course the tortilla wraps but other than that you’re free to experiment.

Ingredients: Salami/cooked chicken breast strips Mayonaise Mozzarella cheese (thinly sliced or graded) Tad bit of mustard 2 Tortilla wraps Preparation: 1. Place tortilla wrap down on a flat surface and cover it with mayonaise. 2. Place both your salami/chicken strips and cheese on top and make sure to keep about 2cm from the edges clear of ingredients. This is to prevent a mess when everything spreads during toasting. 3. Add a layer of mustard or if you prefer another layer of mayonaise to your other tortilla wrap. 4. Close your quesadilla and toast in a flat toaster for about 6-7 minutes. 5. Your meal is ready when the tortillas have a golden brown look, your cheese has melted and a definite crunch can be heard when you gently tap it with a knife.

Ingredients: Honey Cinnamon Mozzarella cheese (thinly sliced or grated) Preparation: 1. Cover your tortilla base with a layer of honey. Beware of those edges! 2. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon across its surface and finish it off with the cheese on top. 3. Close you quesadilla and toast it in a flat toaster until your cheese has melted (about 5-6 minutes) and a golden colour appears on the tortillas. 4. Enjoy the sweet treat.
