IFIRST met Norma in 2001 when I joined the St Marys & District Historical Society, Norma was the current President. A well-dressed lady who had clarity of thought and a vision in mind for the society and had already gained credibility through her many talks on St Marys history. She had the ability to inspire members and others outside of the society to assist and they often did. Some of these were Penrith City Council, St Marys Rotary, St Marys RSL, local schools, and local businesses.
Norma came equipped with a hard work ethic, thorough research and presented it with a sense of humour mixed in. During a talk on St Marys/ South Creek, one of her lines was that when Mary Putland married LieutenantGovernor Maurice O’Connell, as a wedding gift she received 1055 acres of land in the Evan District (Orchard Hills) from Governor Macquarie. Norma would then relate that when she got married, she received a canteen of cutlery, which always amused the audience.
Her involvement with other groups such as the St Marys Development Committee and the St Marys Spring Festival as well as a member of the St Marys Senior Citizens, South Creek (St Marys) Probus Club, and her enthusiasm for ballroom dancing along with all things family kept her on the hop.
Norma had a good sense of humour, and it was not unusual to find ourselves in fits of laughter whilst working at the Chambers. It was often in this relaxed atmosphere that the seeds of plans would take shape in acquiring equipment and organising future events.
Unbeknowns to me both our family’s friendship started in the 1930s by way of our grandmothers who were great

friends. Norma told me that her parents decided to name her after my aunty, Norma Hackett, who would often push baby Norma in her pram around Victoria Park whilst our grandmothers enjoyed a chat.
So, I believe, years later it was fate that our paths would cross and eventually become friends with a shared interest. Therefore, I list just some of Norma’s deserved acknowledgements over the years.

CONSTRUCTION is underway on the biggest redevelopment in Mount Druitt Swimming Centre’s 50-year history and one that will bring even more enjoyment and memories.
Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting and community members on Monday celebrated works beginning on a new centre that will provide a modern and accessible venue.
The new centre will offer:
- a 25m indoor learn-to-swim pool for children and adults
- a splashpad area for children
- a refurbished 50m outdoor pool
- year-round swimming at what was previously a seasonal venue
- inclusive amenities and changerooms, as well as spaces for

community meetings
- a new kiosk which will serve people in the pool area and outside the venue.
Mayor Bunting was pleased to see construction underway.
“We all saw how much our community loves Mount Druitt Swimming Centre when Council held the End of an Era celebrations in January,” he said.
“It’s exciting we will have a new, modern venue that people will continue to cherish and make memories in.”
The $40.6 million Mount Druitt upgrade is funded by the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants program.
Member for Mount Druitt Edmond

Atalla said the start of construction of the new pool was an exciting milestone.
“This project is about investing in the health, wellbeing, and future of the Mount Druitt community.
“The redevelopment of Mount Druitt Swimming Centre means our kids can learn to swim close to home, families can have a safe and welcoming place to gather, and seniors can stay active and connected.
“I’m proud to see this long-awaited project moving forward and thank the Minns Labor Government for providing the necessary funds through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program.”
Robert Buckwell of Whalan was a
Blacktown City Councillor when the centre opened in 1975.
He was just as excited for the new era.
“Young children will enjoy learning to swim because the indoor pool will make it much easier to teach them.
“I think it’s going to be excellent.”
Construction of the new swimming centre is expected to take about 18 months.
The plans form part of a $149 million investment in Mount Druitt.
This includes the expansion of the Mount Druitt Library and Community Hub, the building of a First Nations Cultural Hub and public domain improvements to the town centre.
These are all part of Council’s masterplan for the area.

THE Albanese and Minns Governments are improving access to free mental health care in NSW, with a network of Medicare Mental Health Centres across the state that saw at least 107,500 visits last year.
More than 37,000 people and families across NSW have accessed free Medicare Mental Health Centres since their establishment, without the need for an appointment or referral
This backs in Labor’s commitment to universal, free healthcare where everyone can get the mental health care they need. These centres take pressure off families by saving time and money, while putting mental health support close by.
In 2025, the Lismore centre saw the most occasions of care overall, with 18,318 occasions of care in 2025, as the community continues to rebuild after multiple flooding disasters.
The busiest centres last year also included Western Sydney locations in Liverpool and Penrith which saw 14,533 and 11,799 occasions of care respectively.
Recently the official opening took place of the new Blacktown Medicare Mental Health Centre, with a $2.4 million investment for its establishment and operation.
Located at 114 Main Street, Blacktown, the new Blacktown Medicare Mental Health Centre offers free mental health support and care for people in distress.
Staffed by multidisciplinary care teams, including mental health clinicians and peer workers, care is tailored to the needs of each person who visits the centres.

The Commonwealth and State Governments have partnered together to build a network of 33 Medicare Mental Health Centres in New South Wales, with 18 currently open and supporting people and communities across the State.
In Western Sydney, additional Medicare Mental Health Centres are open in Canterbury, Liverpool, Penrith, Hawkesbury, Parramatta, and Campbelltown. Centres will also be established in Lidcombe and Green Valley.
People seeking information or support can be connected with Medicare Mental Health by calling 1800 595 212 or visiting www. medicarementalhealth.gov.au
Assistant Minister McBride said: “The Albanese Government is putting mental health at the heart of Medicare and quality care in the centre of communities.
“This new Medicare Mental Health Centre offers people living in Blacktown a safe and welcoming

place to access mental health support and care close to home.
“Anyone may be impacted by mental challenges, and this new centre offers everyone access to free support, without the need for an appointment or referral.”
Minister Bowen, Member for McMahon said: “This is about making it easier to get help when you need it, close to home, without the barriers that stop too many people reaching out.
“The Blacktown Medicare Mental Health Centre means free, walkin support is now available right here on Main Street, delivered by a team including clinicians and peer workers.
“Mental health care should not depend on your postcode or your bank balance. This is Labor putting mental health at the heart of Medicare and delivering for Western Sydney in partnership with the NSW Government.”
Minister Jackson said: “These Medicare Mental Health Centres are a
gamechanger. Anyone is welcome to walk in, no appointment, referral, or credit card needed.”
“Getting help for your mental health should be easy and free – that’s what our Medicare Mental Health Centres are all about.
“Thousands of people are already accessing centres all across New South Wales, particularly in Western Sydney and regional hubs like Lismore and Wagga Wagga.
“Medicare is something Australians rightly take pride in, and these centres strengthen that legacy - public, universal care that puts people first.”
Stephen Bali, Member for Blacktown said: “I’m thrilled to be here to open the Blacktown Medicare Mental Health Centre, where anyone in my community can walk in and get the help they need, no appointments or referrals needed.
“By removing the barriers that stop people from accessing support – particularly the cost – we are improving outcomes for those who need it most.”

AT 7:54am on 1 March 1926, the first electric passenger train quietly departed Central Station. The Sydney Morning Herald observed that, “Things that would gather round them excited and curious crowds in other parts of the world, Sydney passes by impassive and disinterested.”
Despite the muted reaction, the impact was immediate. Electric trains delivered faster, quieter and more frequent services, whilst eliminating the constant demand for coal and water. Later that same

year, the opening of the St James and Museum tunnels brought the railway directly into the heart of the CBD,
transforming how Sydney moved.
A century later, that electric network - vastly expanded and continually
evolving - remains the backbone of Sydney’s transport system. Transport Heritage NSW is proud to partner with the NSW Government and Transport for NSW to mark this remarkable innovation, one that continues to shape the way we travel today.
One hundred years on, experience a once-in-a-century anniversary journey aboard Vintage Electric Set F1, retracing the very first electric service from Central to Oatley and return - departing at the exact minute it ran 100 years ago.

By Lyn Forde – President/Research Officer of St Marys & District Historical Society Inc.
GALLIPOLI the Landing - By a Man of the Tenth. “Come on lads, have a good hot supper, there’s business doing.” So spoke No. 10 Platoon Sergeant of the 10th Australian Battalion to his men lying about in all sorts of odd corners aboard the battleship Prince of Wales in the first hour of the morning of April 25th, 1915. The ship, or her company had provided a hot stew of bully beef and the lads set to and took what proved alas to many, their last real meal together. They laugh and joke as though picnicking then a voice calls “Fall In!” ringing down the ladderway from the deck above. The boys swing on their heavy equipment, grasp their rifles and silently make their way on deck and stand in grim black masses. All lights are out and only harsh low commands break the silence. “This way, and almost blindly we grope our way to the ladder leading to the huge barge below that is already half full of silent grim men who seem to realise that at last after eight months of hard solid training in Australia, Egypt and Lemnos Island they are now to be called upon to carry out the object of it all. “Full up sir” whispers the midshipman in the barge. “Cast off the drift astern” says the ship’s officer in charge of the embarkation. Slowly we drift astern until the boat stops with a jerk and twang goes the hawser that couples the boats and barges together. Silently the boats are filled with men and silently drop astern of the big ship until all being filled, the order is given to the small steamboats and away we go racing and bounding dipping and rolling, now in a straight line, now in a half circle on through the night. The moon has just about sunk below the horizon and looking back we can see the battleships coming on slowly in our rear ready to cover our attack. All at once our pinnace gives a great start forward and away we go for land just discernible one hundred yards away on our left. Then crack-crack! Ping-ping! Zip-zip! Trenches full of rifles on the shore and surrounding hills open on us and machine-guns hidden in gullies and redoubts increase the murderous hail. Oars are splintered, boats are perforated. A sharp moan, a low gurgling cry tells of a comrade hit. Boats grounded in four or five feet of water owing to the human weight contained in them. We scramble out, struggle to the shore and rushing across the beach take cover under a low sandbank. “Here take off my pack and I’ll take off yours.” We help one another to lift the heavy water-soaked packs off”. “Hurry up, there” says our sergeant. “Fix bayonets,” Click! and the bayonets are fixed. “Forward!” and away we scramble up the hills at our front. Up, up we go, stumbling in holes and ruts and with a ringing cheer we charge the steep hill, pulling ourselves up by roots and branches of trees and at times driving our bayonets into the ground and pushing ourselves up to a foothold, until, topping the hill we found the enemy had made themselves very scarce. What had caused them to fly from a position from where they could have driven us back into the sea every time?. We instantly fired on a few scattered Turks showing in the distant. Some fell to rise no more, others fell wounded and crawling into the low bushes they sniped our lads as they went past. There were snipers in plenty, cunningly hidden in the hearts of low green shrubs. They accounted for a lot of our boys in the first few days but gradually were rooted out. Over the hill we dashed and down

into what is now called “Shrapnel Gully” and up the other hillside until on reaching the top we found that some of the lads of the 3rd Brigade had commenced to dig in. We skirted round to the plateau at the head of the gully and took up our line of defence. As soon as it was light enough we could see the guns on Gaba Tepe to our right and two batteries away on our left that opened up a murderous hail of shrapnel on our landing parties. The battleships and cruisers were continuously covering the landing of troops, broadsides going into the batteries situated in tunnels in the distant hillside. All this while the seamen from different ships were gallantly rowing and managing the boats carrying the landing parties. Not one man that is left of the original brigade will hear a word against our gallant seamen. England may well be proud of them and all the Australians are proud to call them comrades. The front firing line was now being baptised by its first shrapnel. Machine guns situated on each front, flank and centre opened up on our front line. Thousands of bullets began to fly around and over us, sometimes barely missing. Now and then, one heard a low gurgling moan and turning saw near at hand some chum who only a few seconds before had been laughing and joking now lying gasping with his life blood soaking down into the red clay and sand. “Five rapid rounds at the scrub in front” comes the command of the subaltern. Then an order down the line “Fix bayonets!” Fatal order was it not, perhaps some officer of the enemy had shouted it? (for they say such things were done). Out flash a thousand bayonets scintillating in the sunlight like a thousand mirrors, signalling our position to the batteries away on our left and front. We put in another five rounds rapid fire at the scrub in front. Then over our line, front and rear such a hellish fire of lyddite and shrapnel that one wonders how anyone could live amidst such a hail of death-dealing lead and shell. “Ah, got me! says one lad on my left and he shakes his arms. A bullet has passed through the biceps of his left arm, missed his chest by an inch and passed through the right forearm and finally struck the lad between him and me with a bruising blow on the wrist. The man next to him started to bind up his wounds as he was bleeding freely. All the time shrapnel was hailing down on us. “Oh! comes from directly behind me and looking around I see the poor little Lieutenant of C Company has been badly wounded. From both hips to his ankles blood is oozing through pants and puttees and he painfully drags himself to the rear. I raise him to his feet and at a very slow pace start to help him to shelter, but alas! I have only got him abut fifty yards from the firing line when again we were both peppered by shrapnel and shell. My rifle-butt was broken off to the trigger-guard and I received a smashing blow that laid my cheek on my shoulder. The last I remembered was the poor Lieutenant groaning as we both sank to the ground. When I came too I found myself in “Shrapnel Gully” with an AMC (Australian Medical Corps) man holding me down. I was still clasping my half-rifle. And so, after twelve hours hard fighting I was aboard a troopship again wounded, but I would not have missed it for all the money in the world.

OR many Australians, property investment is more than just a transaction; it’s a strategic move toward long-term financial independence. Whether you are looking to generate a second income, plan for retirement, or enter a competitive property market like Sydney and it suburbs, understanding the advantages is the first step.
Here are eight reasons why an investment property could be your next logical step.
1. A Second Stream of Income
The most immediate drawcard is rental income. A well-placed property provides regular cash flow that can assist with loan repayments or provide a supplement to your salary. Over time, consistent rent strengthens your overall financial position and borrowing power.
2. Significant Tax Benefits
Property investors can often claim deductions on the costs of holding the asset. These include interest on the loan, management fees, council rates, and even depreciation. Many
use negative gearing—where expenses exceed income—to lower their taxable income, while others aim for positively geared properties to maximize immediate cash flow.
3. Long-Term Capital Growth
While markets fluctuate, history shows that well-chosen Australian real estate tends to appreciate over the long run. Strategic improvements or renovations can further accelerate this capital growth, building a larger nest egg for the future.
4. Diversification
If your home is your only major asset, your wealth is concentrated. Adding an investment property helps spread your risk across different locations or property types (e.g., units vs. houses), providing a more balanced investment strategy.
5. Leveraging Equity
As you pay down your mortgage and the property value rises, you build equity. This is a powerful financial tool that can be used as a deposit for your next investment, allowing you to grow a portfolio without needing a massive

cash deposit.
6. Retirement Planning
Property is a staple for retirement. Once the loan is repaid, the rental income becomes a passive revenue stream. Alternatively, investors may sell the asset in later years to contribute to their superannuation or fund a lifestyle change.
7. Greater Control
Unlike shares or managed funds, property gives you total control. You decide the location, the tenant, the rental price, and when to renovate to increase value. You are the “CEO” of your investment.
8. ‘Rentvesting’
This popular strategy allows you to live where you want (like renting a lifestyle apartment in the city) while owning an investment property where you can afford (like a growth suburb). It’s an effective way to get on the property ladder without compromising your current lifestyle.
Things to Consider Investment property isn’t without its responsibilities. You must account for:

• Ongoing Expenses: Rates, insurance, and maintenance.
• Vacancy Risks: Budgeting for periods where the property is untenanted.
• Market Fluctuations: Understanding that values can go down as well as up.

BLACKTOWNbased Sydney Blue Sox
players Alexander Wells and Coen Wynne have been chosen for the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), as Team Australia assembled a 30-man balanced roster blending experience with emerging talent.
The WBC is the premier global tournament for the sport, bringing together the world’s top baseball nations in a high-stakes competition.
Australia will open tournament play in Tokyo as part of Pool C, where they will face Chinese Taipei (March 5), Czechia (March 6), Japan (March 8) and Korea (March 9). Games will be played in front of TV audiences of 30+ million people in Japan, making this one of the most watched Australian sports teams.
The tournament begins March 4, with Team Australia aiming to build on a historic 2023 campaign that saw the nation reach the quarterfinals for the first time.
Team Australia manager David Nilsson has emphasised a team first approach. He believes the roster’s strength lies in collective execution rather than individual star power.

“I think the strength of the team is it is built around the sum of its parts. It’s not about individuals. It’s about having a sum of parts that can execute towards a collective goal and by playing as a team,” Nilsson said.
“For any team to have success in an international baseball tournament, you need to be fundamentally sound pitching and defensively. That will be one of our strong focus. We have great players who we know can succeed.”
28-year-old Wells plays Left Hand Pitcher and his home club is Baulkam Hills. He appeared in Major League

Baseball (MLB) with the Baltimore Orioles and spent six seasons in the minor leagues. He returned to professional baseball with the Sydney Blue Sox and dominated the ABL, posting a 1.55 ERA across 58.0 innings to win both the Pitching Award and League MVP (Helms Award). Has walked just 18 batters in 108.0 innings since returning. Originally from Newcastle, he will join with twin brother Lachlan in representing Australia and is making his senior Team Australia tournament debut 27-year-old Wynne plays Right
Pitcher and his home club is also Baulkham Hills. He returns for his second World Baseball Classic after memorably joining the 2023 squad as an emergency replacement and pitching the following day in a mustwin game against China. Wynne spent time with the LG Twins in the Korean Baseball Organisation (KBO) and has become a key arm for the Sydney Blue Sox over the past four ABL seasons, capable of starting games and working in high-leverage relief roles. He is one of just four players in the Australian team with KBO experience.
