WELL it is nearly here, one of my favourite days of the year; Australia Day - the day we get to celebrate everything Australian - fire up the barbie, sink a few coldies and tell a few porkies with our mates. Aussie slang is one of the biggest stamps of our uniqueness - other countries could never emulate the language we’ve managed to create over the decades nor begin to fully understand it! But as singer John Williamson once famously sang, “Hey true blue, don’t say you’re gone. Say you’ve knocked off for a smoko, and you’ll be back later on,” I sincerely hope we never lose our Australianism. I fear that the old dinki-di sense of humour and our she’ll be right mate attitude shows signs at times of slowly slipping away - and that would be an absolute tragedy. One of my best mates is a fella called Krystyan Buttriss; he’s a true Aussie bloke in every definition of the term. He comes to visit wearing a navy singlet top, boardies and thongs and he lifts his hat and says “owyagoingmate” upon entering. A real Aussie gentleman, his attitude to life and people, and his mannerisms are dinky-di all the way. And I feel a sense of patriotic pride every time we spend time with him, because this type of bloke, sadly, is becoming a rarity. I call him the “Bintang Bogan” - a name I gave him during a trip to Bali with him last year - and it doesn’t offend him. In fact, in what was once the Aussie way for all, nothing much at all offends him. He sees the joke in everything around him, and that includes laughing at himself. What happened to that attitude? We all possessed it at one stage. We laughed our way through life, rolling with the punches. Nowadays, to put it bluntly, there’s too many sooks around. Whingeing, bitching and moaning about everyone and everything, instead of just holding their head up and getting on with life. Someone said to me the other day that they hate the “bogans” that come out on Australia Day. “What’s bogan about them?” I ventured. “Oh you know, they wear the flag as a cape and draw the Southern Cross on themselves and sing Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oy Oy Oy,” was the reply. And that my Aussie friends is exactly what I’m talking about. How did cloaking yourself in our national flag on our national day, drawing the stars that symbolise the best location on earth and singing a chant that went viral and is known across the world become so offensive? This Australia day let your inner bogan break free! It’s there somewhere, hidden under all the group-think and political correctness you’ve allowed to pile on top of it. Happy Australia Day! STUART Ayres MP, Member for Penrith is encouraging community groups to submit an application as part of the NSW Government’s new $1.6 million grants initiative to help boost road safety in Penrith communities. “We all have a role to play when it comes to road safety and that’s why the NSW Government is providing $1.6 million in grants to help deliver grass roots road safety initiatives,” Stuart Ayres said. “Penrith communities may have specific road safety issues that could be best addressed first hand by the community, which is in addition to the state-wide campaigns the NSW Government delivers.” “Now, under our grass roots program, if a school in Glenbrook wants to host a road safety workshop for kindergarten, we want to hear about it. “If a school in Emu Plains wants to run a campaign about the impacts of drink and drug driving, we want to hear about it “If a community in Cranebrook wants additional signs near parks to improve safety of young children, we want to hear about it. Stuart Ayres is urging groups across Penrith to think about their local safety issues and get involved. “Applications open today and community groups have until 21 February 2015 to submit their local road safety ideas,” Stuart Ayres said. “Two grant categories are available – one for smaller projects up to $5,000 and another for

Outback colours A SPECTACULAR fireworks show that celebrates the unique colours of Australia’s outback will be the main drawcard of Penrith’s Australia Day Concert at the Lakes on Monday 26 January. “The Colours of the Outback is the largest arena pyromusical performance ever produced in Australia,” Howard and Sons spokesperson Andrew Howard said. “It’s also the first show in Australia where pyrotechnics, flames, projection and lighting have been choreographed to a live band performing on stage. “This show takes the audience on a wild and explosive Australian Outback adventure.” The fireworks finale will follow other attractions including 2014 X-Factor winner Marlisa Punzalan and X-Factor contestant Taylor Henderson for more information see page 9. NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley and Labor Candidate for Londonderry Prue Car visited St Marys Village Centre last week to speak to residents about Labor’s plans for job creation and economic growth in Western Sydney and the Penrith area if elected in March. Speaking at St Marys in one of his first appearances in his new role as Opposition Leader, Mr Foley emphasised the distance between jobs and people’s homes in the west. “I want to remake the greater west of Sydney - by creating jobs closer to home we can alleviate congestion on our roads,” Mr Foley said. “We actually have to turn the whole objective of the state government on its head if we’re going to pull that trick off. That will mean moving government sector jobs in part out of the CBD, to centres like Penrith, and also a surge in private sector job creation.” Mr Foley and Ms Car both expressed interest in a 25 year plan that would see centres like Penrith, Campbelltown and Liverpool grow in a similar vein to how Parramatta has in recent years. When asked what Penrith residents specifically could expect in

her experience in consulting the government on issues relevant to the electorate. “This is a vibrant region of Sydney and we deserve a government that is focused on improving the worklife balance of our residents,” Mrs Car said. The state election will be held on March 28 this year.

Raising money for sick kids THE annual PVCC & PCCBC Charity Golf Day is held to raise money for a variety of charities in the Penrith area. Last year this fun-packed day was held on October 17th at the Penrith Golf Course on The Northern Road Penrith and was attended by over 100 enthusiastic golfers. “We would be remiss not to give a very big thank you to Robert Grascott from RG Financial Services for his commitment to the event and who has been involved from its inception three years ago,” said Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce General Manager, Kerrie Reeder. “Also a big thanks to Gai Hawthorn from the Penrith CBD Corporation for her support.” The Ronald McDonald Nepean Family Room®, located in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Nepean Hospital was selected as charity of choice. area. Facebook has changed things dramatically, with one post having the ability to reach the computer screens in hundreds of households within seconds! The facebook page Penrith Area Lost and Found is gaining popularity, but more members are needed to increase the network in order to reunite lost pets with their owners. Over the last few weeks there have been a few great outcomes where people sharing the pics of found pets have managed to get to the computer
screens of owners. “The goal here is to assist pets and owners being re-united,” said Naomi, the website’s admin. “We hope to build a community of people willing to assist reunions by offering transport for chip checks, assisting with catching hard to catch stray dogs, scouring neighborhoods for lost pets, putting up posters for lost or found animals, offering overnight bed and breakfast for animals found after the local vets have closed and other assistance of that nature.
“Please message us if you would like to help with any of those things. If you wish to post a lost or found animal, please message us with a pic and the details and we’ll get it up on the wall asap!” Penrith Area Lost and Found is a totally not-for-profit page and the volunteers give up their free time to manage it. IS it only me or have people noticed the (Jaws music please) the New Year’s Resolution walkers! Run for your lives, they are taking up our streets, roads, footpaths and even parks, they are everywhere, don’t feed after dark or add water. Yes folks these are the people that you never see all year round, they are like hermit crabs all year and then suddenly…… The one thing I also notice is the different types of walkers, such as the mixed matched walker- The mixed match walker is a person who has never bought fitness gear in their life and it appears that they have replaced an engine block prior to the walk. The determined walker- This is a person that has the look of pain on their face, like they are passing a large object, however is walking slower than a snail. There’s a lot of arm pumping going on but not much
distance happening. The I don’t give a rat’s bum walker- This is a walker that proceeds to kick every stone and meander like they are heading to work or something. The sweaty walker- This is a walker that looks like they have swum 10 laps and then jumped out for the evening walk, the sweat beads are pouring out and the t-shirt looks like the last scene of rocky when he is yelling out for his wife Adrian. The male bum crack walker- This is a walker that feels the need to wear shorts with no elastic and they are presenting a crack bigger than a plumber’s. The male harry high pants- This is a walker who wears their shorts so high it looks like they need an operation to get them off. Now I know you are asking what has all of this crap got to do with security, but alas my dear readers it has, because I am going to give you walking security tips. So just keep ya knickers on! Walk in groups- so society not only has to put up with one of you on the street but 15. (Yippee) Facebook- checking in and taking selfie’s on every street corner is not really needed, because to be quite frank we don’t really care that you have decided to walk for two weeks only into the new year, and it also takes your attention ( what you span you may have) away from what you are actually doing. So there you have it the NYRW ( New Year’s Resolution Walker) not for the faint hearted folks, this is a trend that you must approach with fear and caution as it only happens at 12.01 on the 01/01 of the New Year - miss the boat and you have to wait another 12 months!

The Premier’s Gala Concerts will be held on 17 and 18 March at Qantas Credit Union Arena (formerly known as the Sydney Entertainment Centre). The theme of the 2015 concerts will be ‘Viva Las Vegas’, showcasing the sounds of Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Tom Jones, Celine Dion and Elton John. “These concerts are extremely popular so I encourage local seniors to get their tickets early and prepare to enjoy this world-class entertainment,” said Stuart Ayres The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government acknowledge our seniors for the fantastic contribution they make to our society and these concerts are a great way to say thank you. Mamre Road upgrades STATE Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP today announced essential road works will start on Monday 19 January 2015 to remove the existing concrete medians to extend the northbound and southbound right-turn lanes from Mamre Road onto the M4 Motorway on-ramps. “The NSW Government has fully funded this $525,000 project as part of the $265 million Pinch Point Program, which aims to reduce delays and manage congestion on Sydney’s main roads, as well as improve road safety for all road users” Tanya Davies said. This work will be carried out between 8pm to 5am from Monday 19 January to Friday 13 March, excluding Saturdays, weather permitting. Lane closures will be in place while the work is carried out to ensure safety of road users and workers. Road users are asked to follow the direction of traffic controllers, adhere
to reduced speed limits and follow traffic signs. There will be some noise associated with this work, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact on residents and businesses. There will be temporary changes to street parking during this work. Equipment may be parked on side streets during the day, making this parking unavailable at times. If you have problem opening jars, try using latex dishwashing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy. 9. Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water. 10. Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still, leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

MY head is filled with sweet desire... oh the memories of being young - the sun, the surf, the boys, the stern parents... and The Rads! I was still in primary school when my collection of saved 5 and 10 cent pieces finally totalled enough for me to catch a bus to the record shop and buy the record Feel The Heat by The Radiators. Excited beyond imagination, I raced home and hooked up my portable record player and turned it on full blast. As I stood in the lounge room whipping
my long hair around the room as I headbanged to Gimme Head Baby I did not hear the sound of my Nanny entering the room on her walking stick behind me. I did however hear the sound of my brand new record scratching as she swiped the needle off to stop the offensive music, yelling “You ought to be ashamed of yourself! You need your mouth washed out with soap. God will punish you!” I was about 10 years old, and I had absolutely no idea what Gimme Head meant - I just loved the sound of The Radiators’ music. Imagine if she’d heard the lyrics to Fess Song. So that was the end of my love affair with The Radiators music - at
least until I learned how to hide my records and play them when there were no adults around. There aren’t too many Aussies from my generation that didn’t rock to the Rads. Homegrown, with a great beat, churning out hit after hit at a time that was still a fairly conservative period in Australian music - they were a guilty pleasure that we all wanted a little piece of. On Saturday January 24, don’t miss the chance to relive the good ole days as The Rads will be Comin Home to play at The Blue Cattle Dog Hotel in St Clair. Three original band members are still there - Brian Nichol on vocals,
Geoff Turner on bass guitar and Fess Parker on lead guitar. Drummer Mark Lucas has been with The Rads since ‘87. Strangers Home Hotel I
T is worth noting the history the “Railway Hotel” played in the fabric of the St Mary’s story. In 1903 the Sydney Hunt Club had a run in June that started at Blacktown with a muster at the hotel in St Marys ready for the hunt. In 1905 Edward Winter, an old resident of St Marys and originally from London who lived in NSW for 56 years died at the Nepean Cottage Hospital at the age of 80 years. He had been a resident in St Marys for over 22 years, the bulk of this time being spent at the Railway Hotel. Edward was said to be a sober and industrious man so maybe he had a room at the hotel? Aunty McGee took charge of the funeral arrangements. Further information on Benjamin Cook who died and left a wife with five children. Ben’s body was buried in St Mary Magdalene Churchyard. He was almost 42 years of age. The family lived in Queen Street (then known as Station Street) in a log cottage near the Methodist Church that was opposite Chapel Street. Ben’s parents were Emmanuel & Harriett Cook (Nee Luxford). Ben’s wife Henrietta (Nee: Prosser) did not remarry, she supported the family by working as a cleaner. She died in 1930. The children were Benjamin (Jnr), Lillian, Claude, Athol & Ivy. Ben (Jnr) enlisted in the infantry in WW1 in 1915 and was discharged in 1917 medically unfit for duty. His brother Claude “Chum” Cook who was working on the railway before the war enlisted in 1915 into the 20th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. He died in 1943. After the closure of the hotel in 1941 it was taken over by Emmanuel Debrincat and he established a grocery store in the old hotel selling “groceries, smallgoods, produce, milk and soft drinks with fresh fruit and vegetables daily and a good stock of patent medicines. After 93 years in 1963 the hotel was demolished and the area was made a car park for the St Mary’s Railway Station. The road that fronted the hotel known as “Railway Road” was closed down. The next hotel in St Marys was called the “Strangers Home Hotel” owned by the Corry family. John and Rosanna Corry (Nee McHugh) came to Australia from Liverpool in England on the “City of South Stockton” in January 1844. John was born in Tyrone Ireland in 1824. They lived for 13 months at Parramatta and moved to “Littleham” on Mamre Rd. John built the hotel on a vacant block on the corner of the Highway and Queen Street in 1859. John was known as a gentleman farmer. He erected the inn in brick to make it the most prominent landmark in all St Marys at that time. From 1856 John and his family attended mass every Sunday morning that was held in one of the three attached terrace cottages then known as “O’Connell’s Terrace” by Father Brennan who was the first known Catholic priest in St Marys. In 1867 John’s daughter Eliza Jane married Thomas Harford (Jnr) by special license in St Mary’s temporary Cathedral married by Reverend John Paul Fitzpatrick. Thomas was the eldest son of Thomas Harford (Snr) who held the license of the “Cottage of Content”. John Corry died in July 1874 at the age of 69 years and is buried in Sir John Jamison’s cemetery at Regentville. His wife continued
running the hotel with the help of her two sons and when her daughter Roseanne married Patrick Donnelly in 1863 he took over the running of the hotel for a short while before he died there. He was a tanner in a small way having a tannery on the western side of South Creek but he gave up tanning to take over the hotel. In October 1860 he signed a petition to stop the amalgamation of the District of Penrith into a Municipality. The inn was also known in the district as “Corry’s Inn”. A small mention in the Nepean Times in January 1898 under “St Mary’s News” said that “Mrs. Corry, who resides next the First and Last Hotel is somewhat older, being in her 91st year. She looks well for her age and was about at 6 o’clock on New Year’s morning”. In June 1894 there was a write up also in the Nepean Times about the Corry family. “Charlie Corry was accompanied by his brother Joe around Rooty Hill way delivering bread for Mrs Morrison of St Marys. Just as he had reached the top of Minchinbury Hill something startled the animal and away he went down the hill towards Eastern Creek helter skelter. The pace however was too severe and on reaching the bottom of the hill over went the cart scattering the two Corry’s and the bread in every direction. Charley was considerably shaken but Joe escaped uninjured. With some little difficulty horse and cart was soon put to rights and away they went on their journey”. In October 1892 another startling accident occurred a little before noon to a Miss Nies of Luddenham. “As the young lady was driving into St Marys along Mamre Road about opposite Fleming’s Mart, her horse which had tried several times the same day to break away, got beyond her control and bolted and in galloping round the corner of the Western Highway and Mamre Road near Mr Corry’s boarding house, Miss Nies was thrown out of the cart. She was luckily thrown clear but received a nasty gash on the forehead and a severe shaking. Dr Scott fortunately happened to be on the scene and attended the injured lady. After a short rest her forehead was stitched up and she went to look after her cart which had been taken into Mr Cott’s yard in a complete wreck. After throwing the driver out the horse careered up church hill until running foul of a fence the cart was upset”. (Don’t you just love the Nepean Times Newspaper?) In March 1882 Richard Cullen was the owner of the hotel and in April he was granted a publican’s license. Not long after that in May he was charged with permitting drunken and disorderly conduct on his premises but the case was later dismissed. Richard and his wife Elizabeth had two daughters who were baptised at St Mary Magdalene church while the family held the hotel. Gertrude born in 1881 and Clara Esther born in 1883. A son Richard died at St Marys in 1930 at the age of 57 and is buried in an unmarked grave in St Mary Magdalene cemetery. To be continued... Promoting firearm safety Panthers go pink!
THE St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre (SMISC) is giving local juniors the opportunity to learn more about the safe, fun and unique range of shooting sports. On the international stage, Australian shooters have stood out as some of the world’s best with gold medals at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Important to this success is the search and development of young and talented shooters. Ali Newbery, Operations Manager at SMISC, says that the Junior Development Program will introduce juniors to all aspects of firearm safety while developing their skills in a competitive sport. “Safety is paramount to the sport and our fully trained and accredited range officers will take the juniors through every stage
of firearm safe handling before introducing them to other aspects of the sport,” Ms Newbery said. “The Program is specifically designed for first time shooters however Minors Permit holders can also take part. It will give them the knowledge and skills they need to enjoy the sport, learn new skills and make new friends along the way.” The Junior Development Program at SMISC has been running for many years and has provided hundreds of juniors with the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the safe use of firearms. Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. Executive Director Diana Melham says that shooting is a great sport for juniors to become involved in. “Anyone aged 12 to 17 can participate regardless of physical abilities or experience. It’s a fun and unique sport taught in a friendly environment where safety and education are of the upmost importance.” The next intake for the 12-week Program starts on Saturday 17 January with an Induction Day beginning at 10am at St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre. A parent or legal guardian must also be present on this day and bookings are essential. IN support of Cricket Australia’s Pink Test at the SCG, the Panthers donned their pink jerseys for training last week to show their support for the McGrath Foundation. They also played a game of cricket to mark the occasion. Jane and Glenn McGrath’s much-publicised experience with breast cancer led to the formation of what has become one of Australia’s most respected and recognised charities, the McGrath Foundation. Because of their experience came the belief that every family experiencing breast cancer in Australia should have access to the support of a breast care nurse shaping the McGrath Foundation’s mission is to ensure every family experiencing breast cancer in Australia has access to a breast care nurse no matter where they live or their financial situation. The Foundation estimates 150 McGrath Breast Care Nurses are needed to achieve this. Only then, will every family in this situation have access to optimal care. Today, the McGrath Foundation is considered to be one of Australia’s leading breast cancer support organisations, with over 30,000 Australian families supported by our 101 McGrath Breast Care Nurses nationally in the last five years.

Hockey life members acknowledged By Jan Harrison
AT the Nepean Hockey Association’s Annual General Meeting, six life members were presented with the “new” Association Life membership badge by outgoing President Patrick Hurley. Western Districts Women’s Hockey and Penrith Men’s Hockey amalgamated in 2010 to become NHA. All were life members of the previous men’s and women’s associations and totaled a huge number of years between them. The women’s criteria for life membership was reaching 25 years, which indicates just how much these ladies and gentlemen have put into hockey. The Association is slowly building its Junior player base and hopefully may level with their sporting cousins in netball and soccer in 2015/16. The season is expected to commence as in previous years around the Easter period and players of all ages are invited to consider a new sporting career - although many soccer players already play Hockey on Friday evenings – but we are always ready to welcome new players! G’DAY BUDDY! WELCOME back to a brand new season of the Nepean News. What a year 2015 promises to be both in a sporting sense locally and in a community sense as well. Recent decisions by our local council will be written about and discussed at length as 2015 unfolds, and I’ll be extremely interested to see what the reaction is amongst the 2750 constituents. But that’s for another day. More pressing issues, we brought a pup! A month before Christmas we acquired a Moodle puppy. A cross Maltese cross Poodle. We’ve had a golden retriever (Henry) for 13 years and thought it was time for Henry to have a playmate. It’s also the first time we’ve had an ‘inside’ dog. A couple of years back we brought another Golden Retriever pup as a mate for Henry but unfortunately the poor little buggar was born with a rare cancer that only 1 in 10,000 dogs get and Cherokee passed away 18 months later. But we got clucky again. So we opted for a smaller dog, one that the kids could try to nurture and look after as a type of a ‘little brother’ type scenario. And while the kids are loving of the little man, as always the necessary duties got palmed off onto me and Meags (my wife). The feeding, the toilet training, the 530am wake up call he gives us each morning. We probably didn’t really think it out as thoroughly as we should have but the little guy has brought a great vibe to our household. Such are his demands that Meags and I had to make up a roster for “Buddy duty”. That’s his name. Buddy, Bud, Budweiser, little B#^*£>< even when number ones and twos are found in the most inappropriate places. But we already love him. I grew up with pets as did my wife

and her family. So we thought it important that our kids did as well. As our Golden Retriever Henry floats into the twilight of his dog life this new little bundle of joy Buddy has warmed our hearts and without trying has brought our family even closer together because of him. The past 8 weeks have been like having a toddler roaming the house where you have to follow and watch their every move. Now as his 16 week needles are due tomorrow his and our lives will get a lot easier. I reckon over the past 6 weeks we’ve said on a dozen occasions “ Lets go up the coast for the weekend” or “let’s go into the city today’ and “why don’t we head up to the mountains for a few days”, then we all realise we can’t because of this little bundle of fluff that hasn’t been able to basically step foot out of our front gate. That all changes tomorrow thank god. Now Buddy’s real adventure begins, and our options to go places improve greatly. M younger brother MY H Harpo is on a much n needed sabbatical following an arduous year of spending upwards of 15 mins a week putting together his column and asked if I might relieve him this week. I said yes, only if he spends at least equal time drinking as drying out, “no problem,” he slurred so here we go. He did say he wants equal rants to raves so I thought what better way to start in the summer but with a few comments on the great Australian game of cricket. Lavish praise must go to the new Aussie captain Steve Smith and a New South Welshman to boot. Harpo and I had a little argument about who should replace Clarke, he wanted Haddin, too old I said Its’ gotta be Smith for the future. Luckily the ACB listened to my recommendation and went for my choice. (Memo to ACB, don’t send cash just a little thank you card will do). How good has he gone, piling on more runs than an Indian curry and ushering the troops around the park like a five star general. Talk about
leading by example, the man has taken everything and dispatched any critics to the boundary where they should remain. As for the rant, I was gobsmacked when some boof-headed journo had a go at him in the third test for not giving the Indians a chance. You are kidding me, 2 up in a series and some bozo thinks it would have been nice to give the opposition a chance. Wonder what would have been said if Smith declared earlier, the Indians got the runs to win and then won the next test. They would have wanted his head on a platter. Wannabes should stick to making their inane comments at hit and giggle 20-Over matches and leave the real cricket to someone who knows what it actually is. Speaking of 20-0ver stuff, we have had some very exciting matches so far and the crowds are loving it. My prediction is that the 50-Over game is dead in the water. If they want to resuscitate it, change the format. Make it two 20 over innings for each team which is still only 80 overs as against 100 and the crowds will come roaring in. We tried one a few years
back at Howell oval between Penrith and Hawkesbury and got 2000+ to the game. Anyone know the last time that many turned up at Howell Oval? Big advantage is that if you pay bucket loads of hard earned to go and see some power hitting from Warner and co, you will be a bit shirty if they get out for a duck. At least with this format they get two cracks at the cherry. Add to that the advantage of not knowing who will win till the end. How many times do you see one team get 250+ and the opposition is 8 for nothing after 15 overs, you may as well go home at that stage. Not good for the TV advertisers or the caterers at the game. Over to you ACB. Well thanks Harpo for the fill in op, keep an eye on that liver and get back on board for the next paper.
