Dispute over a boat launching site north of Nelson is no closer to being resolved, years after it first came to a head, with council still “assessing options” 18 months
after saying they needed to find a definitive way forward. The site at Delaware Bay Estuary has long been a launching area for sea-goers, as a safer alternative than nearby Cable Bay, but is also an ecological and culturally
significant site for local iwi. According to the Nelson Resource Management Plan it is not recognised as an official launch site. Driving is not permitted on an estuary of foreshore under the plan unless at a designated
launching area, or if a resource consent allows. However, Nelson City Council had not enforced this rule at the Maori Pa Rd site for almost 20 years, until 2019. A spokesperson for Delaware Bay
Access Group, which was set up on behalf of recreational boat users to ensure continued access to the area, says the site had always been a recognised legal launch ramp.

Grieving father faces loss of business Jonty Dine Following the loss of his beloved wife, Yusuf Corten could now lose his business too as he adapts to life as a single father of three. Yusuf ’s wife Rose died on January 3 following a battle with cancer. Now the sole caregiver of three children aged 17, 14 and 2, Yusuf is struggling to balance his business with taking care of his family all while stricken with grief. “I am tired and sad.” Yusuf has been desperately searching for a kebab chef for more than six months. He has tried to bring a friend and qualified chef over from Turkey to help him, however immigration has declined his application
twice. Should the third attempt also fail, Yusuf says he will have no choice but to shut up shop. “My kids need me. Balancing home and business is not easy, I need help.” Yusuf bought the Kebab Kitchen on Bridge St in 2018 and has given away at least two free meals every day since. Whether they are homeless, unemployed or just a little down on their luck, Yusuf will always help someone in need. He gives away a minimum of $1000 a week for the charitable meals, however, profit is not his primary concern.

FROM PAGE 1 That was until they say council unlawfully removed it without due process by not including it in the resource management plan along with Nelson’s other sites, Monaco, Nelson and Cable Bay. “They (council) accept that they made a mistake but they refuse to address it,” says spokesperson Daryl Crimp. In 2019 the group thought they had reached an agreed solution in consultation with local iwi and council to allow recreational use to continue within a marked area, subject to council lodging a resource consent. Daryl says the solution of using a marked launch area addressed all environmental
and cultural concerns of iwi, but once the draft was prepared, he says iwi removed their support of the consent lodging so council decided not to proceed. He says that left boaties bemused as they began to receive trespass notices on their vehicles from local iwi members. Council’s group manager of environmental management, Clare Barton, said in October Te Huria Matenga Wakapuaka Trust member Andrew Stephens says he is still waiting to hear from Clare on what “stance/position” the council is going to take in regards to the site. He previously said he felt “appalled” when he saw vehicles driving over the sacred land.

Growing up in a poor family of four kids and a single mum in Turkey, there was often not enough money to feed everyone. “I slept many years hungry.” Yusuf says he does not have the time necessary to train a donor kebab chef. “This job looks easy, but it is not easy. I have been a chef for 27 years, but it took six months to learn to make a kebab.” He is forced to close his business regularly throughout the day in order to get his children to and from school, help with homework, feed and bathe them, and get them to bed. Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says she has been meeting with Yusuf regularly. “It has been an incredibly distressing and difficult time for him and his

family.” Rachel says she is heartbroken about the loss of Yusuf ’s wife. “He does so much amazing work in community, he is very loved.” Rachel says due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is incredibly difficult for people outside New Zealand without citizenship to get through the border. “The threshold is extremely high, and decisions are operational from Immigration NZ.” She asks if anyone knows of a qualified doner kebab chef, to please put them in touch. “That would be incredibly helpful.” Rachel is calling on the Nelson community to help repay the kindness Yusuf has shown over the years, encouraging them to stop by the Kebab Kitchen for a meal. “He has been an incredibly generous member of our community to people in need, I’m hopeful the community can support him so he can keep his business open.”

On the two-year anniversary of the Pigeon Valley fires, local firefighters were putting out a fire that had spread 300m along a fence line in Appleby. Crews were called around 5am on February 5 to reports of a paddock on fire on River Rd, Appleby. Fire and Emergency shift manager Simon Lyford says on arrival crews found a car on fire, which had caused a blaze covering an area of approximately 30x40m, which soon spread 100m along the fence line of a paddock. Just before 6am the fire had spread to cover a 300m strip but had been extinguished.
Crews from Richmond, Appleby and Brightwater spend an hour and a half on site. A spokesman for Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade says the car fire appeared to be suspicious and police had been notified. "We’re unsure of the exact time it took for the fire to spread but it moves fast in dry conditions like these." He says it was lucky that the surrounding paddocks had recently been cut for hay or the outcome could have been much different. "Fire spreads quickly in these dry conditions," he warned. In 2019, that type of fire spread across Pigeon Valley and sparked various blazes across the region, including on Walter’s Bluff in Nelson. It led
to one of the largest wildfires in New Zealand and the biggest aerial response in history. However, weather conditions forecasted for Nelson Tasman suggest that we could avoid drought this year, after three consecutive summers of it. Nelson and Tasman are currently experiencing a prolonged period of hot dry weather, but the index which measures drought has been far lower this year. In NIWA's long-term forecast from February to April, Nelson-Tasman is predicted to have average to aboveaverage temperatures, along with average levels of rainfall. This was due to a La Nina weather pattern this year which would stop drought continuing.

The call has gone out to Kiwis to fill roles in our horticulture and viticulture industries after border closures has led to a shortage of international workers to pick the region’s produce. With Covid-19 shutting down borders, jobs that used to go to travellers are going begging. So Project Kōkiri has started a campgain to “Pick Nelson
Tasman”. It looks to promote work opportunities and celebrate all the great lifestyle offerings in the region. There is even the possibility of financial assistance for relocation costs, an accommodation supplement and a one-off payment of $1000 if you stay in the job for six weeks. “Nelson Tasman is renowned for growing some of the world’s best produce but this produce needs to be picked,” says campaign spokesperson Johny
O’Donnell. “These jobs used to be primarily filled by travellers and international workers, but while our borders remain closed there’s a big shortage of staff. So now we need as many people as possible to pack their bags and pick Nelson Tasman.” Johny says those roles aren’t filled and the produce goes to waste, the region stands to take an economic hit well into the tens of millions. The campaign includes a back office recruitment function,
which is being supported by the Ministry of Social Development and will take care of the applications received by the campaign to match them with job opportunities available. “But it’s more than the jobs we’re promoting,” says Johny. “We’re also promoting it as an opportunity to explore our stunning, diverse region. Once they’ve finished filling their bins, they can fill their boots with a huge range of activities and attractions. It’s a great opportunity to have

Move over puppies, there is a new kindergarten in Nelson and it’s just for kittens. ‘Kitten Kindy’ is starting at Halifax Veterinary Centre at the end of the month. “We already have a really good puppy school, and that’s huge, so what not do something for the kittens?” says organiser Hannah Fergusson. It is designed for kittens aged from seven to 14-weeks -old who have had their first vaccinations. Kittens and their owners will learn about health care, dental care, grooming, training, behaviour, cat body language,
environmental enrichment and handling. “Socialisation is also a huge part of it - learning how to be amongst other kittens their age and with other people,” says Hannah. It will also cover the important topics of desexing and microchipping. “If you do have an outside cat, microchipping is so important.” Hannah says the idea came from a consultant for the clinic who has done work overseas, where kitten kindy is a “big thing”. “There are a few in New Zealand, but we’re missing something in Nelson.” Hannah says she believes there are misconceptions about how to deal with cats and she wants to show people there are more to
our feline friends than meets the eye. “So many people think they are like mini dogs or that you can just pop them outside and they’ll do their own thing - but cats really do love and benefit from lots of human interaction. “They’re a lot cleverer and more social than we realise.” Hannah says it may get a bit “nuts” having all the kittens together in one room, so they will break off into groups of three kittens - depending on personalities. “It’s also not just for people that have a kitten. It teaches you what you’ll be getting into if you’re wanting to adopt a cat.” Hannah says if it goes well, they will run it again.

Big bike rack riles property owner NEWS Charles Anderson When a two-storey, 60-bike capacity stand starts construction next week on Trafalgar St some central city business and property owners in the area will be lamenting it. “I’m very upset about it because it will look ugly,” says commercial property owner Gaire Thompson. “They could shove it in one of the carparks but to plonk it right in the main street here, I think there are plenty of spaces they can put them if they want them.” The bike stand, which will be erected outside the Nelson City Council building, will also mean the loss of seven parking spaces. Another has already been built in Montgomery Square. While Gaire, whose company owns several blue-chip commercial properties in the CBD, admits that the bike stand won’t affect him financially in any way, he says that there hasn’t been enough consultation about it. “Don’t think a lot of public know about it until it happens.” In fact, the council did let Trafalgar St businesses know about the plan, sending out a letter. However, this resulted in only three submitters, two against the proposal. One of those against was State Cinemas director Mark

Christensen who said he was in favour of making Nelson safter for people but was concerned about losing car parks. “Further loss of car parks to the cinema would detrimentally affect our business and encourage cinema customers from Richmond and beyond not to travel into Nelson City.” Council says multiple locations were considered, but other options were either not safe for cyclists to access or had underground services that would make installation difficult and costly. Councillor Brian McGurk, infrastructure committee chair, says officers had spent months engaging with businesses in the central city about the proposed bike stand sites. “I am confident that throughout
this process, officers have taken all reasonable steps to engage with businesses and individuals concerned about the location of the Trafalgar St bike stand.” He says they have also devoted time and energy into considering as many as 17 alternative sites, including nine as a direct result of feedback from central city businesses. Construction on the Trafalgar St bike stand will start on 16 February. “All tenants and building owners on Trafalgar St between Bridge St and Halifax St have been directly informed.” However, Gaire says he wants to stop the project entirely, even threatening judicial review. “But that’s expensive and I’ve got 101 things to worry about other than bike stands.”
Exhibition marks second anniversary of Tasman Fires: An exhibition to mark the two-year anniversary of the 2019 Tasman Fires opened at the Wakefield Village Hall last week. The free exhibition Ablaze – The 2019 Tasman Fires will tour around the region, with other venues to be announced soon. The second anniversary of the Tasman Fires was on February 5 and Nelson Provincial Museum chief executive Lucinda BlackleyJimson, who is behind the idea, wanted to mark the date in the community. The exhibition tells the story of how the fires affected the community and will highlight the role of firefighters and volunteers in the fires. It will also feature over 90 images from the community and a portfolio of paintings and drawings by young local artist Celia Allen. Shade comes to pop-up park: Nelson City Council contractors will be installing three areas of fabric shade sails at the Riverside youth pop-up park this week. For the public’s safety, from Tuesday 9 February until Thursday 11 February, the park will be

closed (reopening on Friday 12 February) as poles are installed in preparation for the shade sails to be erected. Once the poles go up, it will take two weeks for the concrete to cure and the final adjustments to be made. During this time the park will be made safe for users. One set of shade sails will be installed in the young children’s imagination space section and another set of sails will cover the picnic tables behind the basketball court. One will also be erected beside the pump track.
Suspicious car fire on the Whangamoas: A car fire north of Nelson which spread to neighbouring grass last week is being treated as suspicious by police. Fire and Emergency New Zealand were called to the car blaze last Tuesday night on SH6, in the Rai Valley area of the Whangamoas. A police spokesperson says they received a report of the car fire at about 9.15pm and are treating the matter as “suspicious”. FENZ shift supervisor Brent Dunn says the car was “well ablaze" when they arrived at the scene. He says the fire had spread to a surrounding area of grass and covered an area of around 15 square metres. Crews were on the scene for an hour. Police are continuing to make enquiries.

Protecting vulnerable rest home residents during the pandemic has sparked a bed shortage in rest homes. Health bosses have revealed fewer residents in Nelson care facilities suffered from seasonal illness and infection. And the resulting drop in the mortality rate means there are now less available beds for those in need. Nelson Marlborough Health general manager strategy, primary and community, Cathy O’Malley, says Covid-19 restrictions are partly responsible. “Fewer residents within aged residential care facilities have suffered from seasonal illnesses during 2020 thanks in part to the protocols instigated by staff to protect the vulnerable during Covid-19 restrictions. “This has resulted in lower mortality rates in those most at risk of these illnesses such as the frail older adults. “Covid-19 has therefore put some pressure on aged residential Care (ARC) bed numbers.” But staff say the unintended consequence of the response
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is supporting a series of wellbeing workshops for the wine industry. MPI’s director of rural communities and farming support Nick Story says it has been a challenging 12 months for the industry, with weather events, and labour supply issues and market uncertainty caused by Covid-19. “The severity of these impacts has varied across regions. The workshops will give people the tools to help them tackle the year ahead with a positive frame of mind.” MPI has allocated $40,000 to New Zealand Winegrowers to deliver 12 wellbeing workshops in winemaking regions, which are available to everyone working across the industry. The workshops will take place in February and March in the South Island, prior to harvest, and in April and May in the North Island postharvest. “The workshops are designed to help boost morale and reignite enthusiasm following last year’s challenges,” says New Zealand Winegrowers’ leadership and communities manager Nicky Grandorge. “They will include discussions on the importance of mental wellbeing, as well as helping people to reset for 2021.” Funding for the initiative was provided in Budget 2020. MPI was allocated $1.1 million over three years to deliver extra wellbeing and support services to complement those provided by Rural Support Trusts. Wine is New Zealand’s sixth-largest export good, with exports hitting $2 billion in 2020. New Zealand wine is sold in more than 100 countries.

A report to Nelson Marlborough Health board members last month highlighted concerns across both districts. “Pressures in age residential care continue across the district as reduced social interaction and effective infection control has meant that fewer elderly people have died as a result of seasonal illness. “There is some evidence that the bed availability is starting to return to patterns normally seen, but it will take some time to develop reliable bed capacity across all levels of care,” it reads.
A review into bed numbers done at the beginning of last year showed no concerns. Cathy says the situation changed rapidly and staff have worked quickly to respond. But an increase in the number of dementia patients will need a longer-term solution. “Dementia is an area of focus as the aging population grows, last year alone an additional five beds have been made available for high needs people with dementia,” Cathy says. Staff have been working on improvements and new measures to help, including increasing facility funding to offer additional support. There is also a dedicated,
funded respite bed for rest home or hospital level care which can be used for urgent care or respite. Staff are working with existing and potential age residential are providers to help ease the situation, says Cathy. “Our priority is to support people to live well in their own homes for as long as possible and a significant amount of resource and effort goes into achieving this. “NMH are very appreciative to all the staff in these facilities for their continued diligence and hard work looking after and protecting some of the most vulnerable members of our community during this unprecedented time.”

Sharee also coaches Kōhine Māia’s skate sessions. “There’s definitely a bit of fear for young girls wanting to try skating, so sessions like this offer a safe and fun environment for them to try new things,” says Sharee who has been skating for 25 years.

I’m thrilled with the $1.5 million that the Nelson Regional Development Agency and Destination Marlborough have received as a part of this tourism package. This fund will build on existing events in our region and can be used to develop new tourism opportunities to show off all that Nelson has to offer. Nelson and Marlborough are looking to increase visitor numbers by offering multiday events, which will benefit both our local tourism and hospitality sectors. I also welcome Medsafe’s provisional approval of New Zealand’s first COVID-19 vaccine. This approval, announced last week, means that we can begin preparing for the first stage of our vaccine roll-out. Medsafe has spent months assessing the safety of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, with the advantage of watching the vaccine roll-out in other countries. This up to date medical and scientific data gives us confidence in the vaccine. This week, I’ll be delivering my maiden statement in Parliament, as your new MP. Following a turbulent 2020, Nelsonbased airline Originair is set to increase its services for domestic travellers. The airline will introduce new flights with the addition of a third Jetstream 32 EP to its fleet. Originair has been operating at a reduced schedule that will increase from February 14 with the reintroduction of daily services from Nelson to Palmerston North and Hamilton and return. CEO Robert Inglis says a double daily peak time schedule is planned. “This cannot be implemented as early as intended, due to Covid-19 related delays with the introduction
of our next aircraft.” In addition, a direct service from Hamilton to Nelson each Friday evening with a direct return service on Sunday afternoons will allow travellers a full weekend in Nelson. An 8am Monday service from Hamilton to Palmerston North, will also be introduced from February 14, with a 5:30pm flight from Palmerston North to Hamilton each Friday. This service will become daily and Originair hopes to introduce these additional peak time flights during April. The airline commenced flying Hamilton to Palmerston North return services in October last year following Air New Zealand withdrawing its daily services on the sector.

The annual Hospice Trees of Remembrance campaign is celebrating raising a total of $35,512, more than $2,000 more than the previous year. All the money raised goes to provide services at Nelson Tasman Hospice. Hospice CEO Frans Dellebeke says: “Once again our community has shown its support for the excellent service provided by the hospice team. The hospice needs to raise in excess of $2 million annually, and our generous community helps us in many different ways to reach that target. Not only does the community provided much needed funds, but our 500 volunteers again highlights what an amazing community we have in our region. From Nayland College to navy captain Erin Bradnock After nearly eight years serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy, Nelsonian and 25-year-old Fletcher Slierendrecht has been promoted to First Commanding Officer. Like many teenagers, Fletcher was undecided about his future outside of
school and it was a careers roadshow at Nayland College that turned him towards the navy. “I went along to see what was out there and the navy caught my eye,” he says. Fletcher has been serving in the navy since he was 18-years-old and worked his way up to captain of the Inshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS in Taupo. Fletcher’s mother Dana Slierendrecht says Fletcher is no stranger to the water, having grown up diving and fishing. “He’s always been at home on the water ever since he was a wee boy,”
she says. Dana describes her reaction to Fletcher’s latest posting as a “proud parent moment”. The pride extends to Fletcher’s high school, Nayland College. An old football coach Brendan Crichton describes Fletcher’s achievements as “phenomenal”. “It’s amazing what he’s achieved, to have climbed up the ranks so quickly, we are immensely proud,” says Brendan. Brendan recalls coaching Fletcher in 1st XI football for three years and says he was initially surprised to hear his interest in the navy. “When you’re working with teenagers, they
always worry about what will happen after school. Fletcher's story really shows the value of these career days. You never know what’s going to interest them when they leave school.” Fletcher says when he first arrived at the navy he was a “blank canvas”. All he knew was that he wanted to be working on the water. He started as a warfare officer, subspecialising in navigation. Nearly eight years on, he says he’s still loving the work and the lifestyle. “I really enjoy what we do, its engaging stuff."

Photo: Jenny Nicholson. to pick up three new subjects in May, when she made the decision to stay in New Zealand, she passed NCEA level two and achieved endorsed with excellence. “I selected my subjects when I was coming to New Zealand and I just wanted to have fun. I did cooking and outdoor education. But I needed different subjects to be eligible for university in Germany so had to pick up biology, history, and English,” she says. Zoe was nervous about the transition from just having fun to having to work hard, but said it was easier than she thought.
Out of school, Zoe has loved seeing New Zealand. She says her friends in Germany said they were envious of life in New Zealand when she posted being in Hagley Park in a crowd of thousands on New Year’s Eve. The hardest part of being away from home for two and a half years is missing her family. She also knows that, when she does return to Germany, she may never live at home again, as she will possibly go straight to university. Garin College currently has 14 international students with Zoe being the only European in the cohort.

While other German exchange students flew home, Zoe Blau made the decision to finish her schooling at Garin College. Zoe arrived in July 2019 for a year, but during lockdown her parents raised the question of whether she would prefer to stay in New Zealand for the next few years. “Seeing the attitudes of students here and looking at Germany from a distance made me look at things differently. There is stress for students here, but personally for me there is less stress going to school here,” says Zoe. Having made the decision to stay, Zoe is now very thankful. “My friends are in their final year and are stressed by coronavirus. They have to go to school and wear masks all the time and my region is second worst for the virus in Germany,” she says. Zoe thinks the blend of German and Kiwi schooling has been good for her. She says she learned to work hard in Germany and still wants to make her parents proud with good grades. Despite having

Soulful sound comes to East St Nelson Fringe Fest gets revamp for future Staff Reporter Nelson Fringe Festival will have a different look for 2021 with a new director and new opportunities for performers. The beloved festival, which was forced to put its whole schedule online last year due to Covid-19, is using 2021 as a year to re-group and reenergise. The team plans to use this year’s festival as a building block for future events. “It’s part of the constant challenge of figuring what being a fringe is all about,” says new director Giles Burton. Giles brings with him vast experience from numerous
fringes and festivals around the world, including Edinburgh, Prague, Tbilisi, Wexford and Wellington. He also founded Hong Kong Microfest and was a co-founder of Prague Fringe. For Nelsonians, he is best known as the director of Nelson Summer Shakespeare, and director of the plays Maungatapu (Nelson Arts Festival 2017) and The Man Who Was Thursday (Nelson Fringe Festival 2018). Giles will be filling the shoes of Laura Irish, who after five years of dedication and drive on the fringe team, including the last three as years as artistic director, is stepping

down from the role. “In 2021 the Nelson Fringe Festival is looking forward to the future,” says Giles. “We’re inviting people and communities who haven’t been involved with us before to jump in and experiment with something new." The ball was doing just enough, the wicket was not easy.” The 21-year-old law student soon found his rhythm and began to punish any width outside the off stump with his trademark cut shot. Nic and Joseph (120) would compile a superb 271-run partnership, batting for almost 100 overs. “We just took it five overs at a
time, Joseph has been playing for ten years so he kept me calm and in the moment.” The century was Nic’s first for Nelson, eclipsing his previous highest of 86 the week before. “It was a relief but also to do it in a Hawke Cup match was pretty special.” Nic says the body took some time to recover after 354 balls and 490 minutes in the middle. “It was well and truly the longest I have batted.” The Griffins will have three Hawke Cup defences before the close of the season, the first against North Otago. “It would be amazing if we could keep it over winter,” says Nic.

The course of just over 1500m had a bit of everything, with a slight chop, enough breeze to keep the surface stirred up and a tidy current to cope with on the final 500m leg of the triangular course. Triathlete Squance led out on the first leg, building a body length over Oxford Bayley, Luke Kelly and Abbey Smale. These four have great credentials nationally, with Bayley and Smale leading the Banana Boat Ocean Swim series this season and Kelly a regular winner on the circuit in recent years, so any race in Nelson Harbour is ultra-competitive. With 12 weeks of swimming done and only six more to go, positions are starting to shape up in the best-of-11 Port Nelson series. Attention inevitably focuses on the leaders in the series, but back in the field the competition is intense between swimmers in the same age group and also across age groups as individual bragging rights become important. In any race, most swimmers have the experience of recognising
a pair of goggles, a particular swimsuit or wetsuit and wanting more than anything to beat that person. That inevitably leads to lifted performances. Lorraine Mellors, four weeks out from her first Ironman, is hitting form at the right time, leading a large group of swimmers in midfield, including Eric Wylde, Victoria Charles Jarod Spencer, Brian McGurk and Paul Thornton, with only nine seconds separating the first and the last in this group. Similar tight groups race for home all through the field of more than 100 swimmers. Emily Chadderton was first ashore in the 700m short swim, followed closely by Noah Brehaut. In another tight competition, three 10-year-olds, Rocco Elleena, Maicah Kalani and Nia Linyard stepped ashore in the space of three seconds. Swimming continues in the Port Nelson Series for another six weeks, with race three in the Clements Endurance Series taking place on Sunday. The Clements Challenge takes competitors out through the Cut on an incoming tide before they continue to Tāhunanui Beach, a total distance of almost 3km. Locals urged to get on their bikes Whether you’re most comfortable hurtling down one of Nelson’s mountain bike tracks or haven’t ridden a bike since childhood, now is your chance to get a free breakfast on your journey to work. Nelson City Council is calling on locals to ditch four wheels for two today as the city celebrates Go By Bike Day. In a bid to get more people thinking about reducing their carbon footprint, Go By Bike Day encourages commuters to bike to work or school for the day.
There will be free coffee and breakfast at 1903 Square for those that bike along. The Plinkers will be playing music while there will also be free bike checks available. Organisers ask that you please bring reusable cups to reduce waste, with free coffee vouchers from Brews and Bikes for those with their own cups. Riding a bike to work isn’t just great for your health and well-being, it’s also a good way to contribute to Nelson’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The stigma surrounding pole dancing is vanishing as more people opt to take it up as a sport for its many physical and psychological benefits. The growth of ‘pole’ has exploded in recent years and has even resulted in it being recognised as an official sport. Instructor Elizabeth-Rose O'Connor says there are still plenty of misconceptions about pole dancing. “A lot think it’s easy or just for strippers, but it improves fitness, flexibility, strength and self-confidence.” Women, men and even
children are discovering the benefits of pole. “It has been very women dominated but now it is a sport for everyone.” The 23-year-old teaches at the new Altitude Studio on Pascoe St which opened in August. Before long, Altitude had more than 50 members regularly coming through its doors. While an exotic element can still be incorporated, the most important aspect of pole is empowerment. Elizabeth says she has seen a number of clients who were incredibly anxious about exercising in front of others out of fear of being judged but now embrace themselves and the sport.
“I used to also hide the fact I was doing it but now I am really open about it.” Elizabeth has enjoyed a rapid rise in the sport and is set to compete in the New Zealand amateur competition in Christchurch in August. “I spend about 21 hours a week at the studio, but I never get sick of it.” Elizabeth says it is never too late to get involved, with one of her students set to make her competitive debut on her 55th birthday. She is confident the sport will continue to grow and one day hopes to see the Tasman Mako in the studio showcasing their pole skills. “I would love to see them have a go, that would be awesome.”

Athletic College Old Boys continue to lead the way with six wins from six while a log jam at the middle of the points table will have all eyes on the final round this weekend. Nelson College picked up its first win on Saturday following a superb innings by Ronan Restieaux. Batting at six, Ronan scored 91n.o. as his side posted 201/8 off its 50 overs against the Dolphins at Lower Ngawhatu In reply, the Dolphins would fall 50 runs short of the target as Kaleb McKay snared three scalps in the upset victory. Meanwhile, a Rick Edwards century saw Stoke/Nayland defeat Wakatu at Marsden Rec. Bowls: Shannon McIlroy is taking a sabbatical from competitive lawn bowls so that he can devote more time to his family and his business. Shannon says he also wants to give his wife Amy a chance to play more bowls and support her in her new role as an early childhood development teacher. He is not sure how long his sabbatical will be but says he will be back and will also feature in the National Fours and Mixed Pairs down at Alexandra at the end of the month. Shannon says spending time with the family over Christmas made him realise how much they were sacrificing for him to play bowls.

Rowing: Nelson rowers showcased their prowess on the water winning a slew of medals at last month’s South Island Club Champs in Twizel. Competing in near perfect conditions at Lake Ruataniwha, Nelson brought home four gold, two silver and four bronze while Nelson crews also made another 16 A finals and four B finals. The Nelson team comprised of 48 college-aged rowers, three club rowers (rowers under 27 who have left school) and two masters (rowers older than 27). The club’s senior college and club rowers will now enter an intense training phase in preparation for the New Zealand National Championships from February 16-20.

It was a busy weekend of sport for Nelson with both the National Kite Foiling Championships and NZ Downhill Mountain Bike Series coming to the city. Nelson waters would played host to the country’s best kite foilers all vying to stamp their claim for an Olympic spot. Among them was the sole female Justina Kitchen, daughter of Kiwi Olympian Rex Kitchen. Nelson Yacht Club manager Tim Fraser-Harris says the competition curse struck on Friday morning, with very little
wind around. “We were waiting a while for the wind to get away, it came very late which has been a challenge.” Despite the weather not quite playing ball, Tim says locals enjoyed some inner harbour racing on the Friday night. “There were lots of ‘ooh’s and ahh’s’ as they came in close and nearly crashed into one another.” Tim says it has been a fruitful period for the club, having hosted the National Starlings in 2020 and the European Nationals in January. Elsewhere, the Nelson Mountain Biking Club would host round three of the National Downhill series on just ten days’ notice.
Fire risk in Marlborough led to the decision to relocate the event over the Whangamoas. Club secretary Belinda Crisp says while there was a lot to
organise, they have a skilled team of volunteers that know the drill. Close to 120 riders took on the Sharlands Mountain Bike
Park which included the iconic “Kaka” trail. The top three spots were claimed by Sam Blenkinsop, Charlie Murray and Brook Macdonald.

January is gone, and recently we’ve had a couple of weeks of very nice weather. The water temperature hasn’t come up much though, in the middle of the Bay it still sits below 19 degrees. There are still a few good sized snapper on the chew, mainly out wide in 35m+. The ones we caught were still full of roe. Large numbers of decent sized kingfish are being caught everywhere, many as bycatch on flasher rigs intended for snapper. The tuna haven’t turned up in the Bay yet, if the weather stays good they will hopefully make an appearance soon! The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club committee members have been extremely busy over the last months and put together what will be the biggest and best Snapper Cup ever. Thanks to our most generous sponsors they have already organized well over $20.000 worth of cash and prizes with more to come. It will be held on Saturday, March 6th, from 5am onwards. There will be prizes for heaviest and average snapper, as well as for heaviest kingfish, kahawai and gurnard in both adult and junior divisions. Additionally, there will be plenty of high value spot prizes! The prize giving will take place at the Waimea Old Boys Rugby Clubrooms
