Lockdown does not dampen school results Erin Bradnock Nelson school principals are relieved with successful 2020 NCEA results despite a difficult year. NCEA released its first set of
provisional data for secondary schools last week. NCEA is the main national qualification for secondary school students in New Zealand. Nelson College headmaster Richard Dykes says, despite not knowing what to expect, the results
for the school were “really positive”. This was espcially true considering the anxieties of students following a challenging schooling year filled with remote learning due to Covid-19 lockdown. “Our students have excelled
themselves. We’ve seen improved results across level 1, 2 and 3. I’m really pleased,” Richard says. Nelson College saw higher achievement rates, endorsement rates and university entrance rates are all simiar to 2019.
“That just reflects the work of the community, the work of staff and the commitment of students and whānau in a really difficult and trying year.”

Neglected Nora finds a loving home

After a troubled start to life, Nora the three-legged wolfhound beardie cross has found a loving home. Formally known as CJ, Nora was rescued as a puppy from a neglectful home in the West Coast late last year by SPCA Nelson. Inspector Danielle Tinetti was called to the scene where Nora had been left tied to a fence and neglected for days on end. She was just nine-months-old. “I went out there got to the property and she was tied up with no water. She was tethered to a broken fence with nails sticking out of it that she was forced to stand on,” says Danielle. Danielle says whenever she would pull on her tether, the board and nails would flick up and hit her. Once back in Nelson, it was clear one of Nora’s back legs was causing her a lot of pain. X-rays revealed that an old fracture had never healed and her back right leg had to be amputated.

Nelson College for Girls principal Cathy Ewing says the school is “very proud” of the students’ NCEA results. Sixty seven per cent of the college’s year 11 students gained a merit or excellence endorsement for their Level 1 certificate. More than 85 per cent of year 12 and 13 students gained a Level 2 or Level 3 certificate and 67 per cent of year 13 students gained university entrance. “These results are a huge credit to the efforts of both staff and students to have overcome the challenges of 2020,” says Cathy. Nayland College’s principal Daniel Wilson says he is “delighted” with their results
and says students and staff were “incredibly resilient” considering the challenges of the past year. Daniel says all qualifications are sitting above national averages and says there were significant gains in level 2, 3 and university entrance. “The changes in the credit structures due to Covid have obviously had an impact across the country – with national averages up between 3-5 per cent at each level.” NCEA announced a learning recognition credits scheme last year to account for the challenges of remote learning and the anxieties caused for students concerning the pandemic. “Even so, our results are significantly better than anticipated, even when taking this into account,” says Daniel.
“She handled having three legs really well. She has such a lovely temperament, and it doesn’t seem to bother her,” she says. Nora’s new owners Jordan Irvine and Joel Emery-Jones say they often forget she only has three legs. “When she runs, she gets a good amount of speed going. People are always surprised when they realise she only has three legs,” says Joel. Jordan spotted Nora on SPCA Nelson’s Facebook page where she was already gaining a bit of attention for her sweet nature and story. Jordan says she applied for Nora immediately, even before consulting her partner Joel. “I’d been wanted another dog for about a year, so I pestered him for a bit, but he gave in pretty quickly.” Jordan and Joel already had an adopted wolfhound at their Enner Glynn home and knew Nora would fit right in.

To begin with, Jamu was a bit shy towards Nora but now they’re two peas in a pod. “They get along great, but Nora is definitely the boss,” says Jordan. Jordan says she wasn’t aware to the full extent of Nora’s abusive upbringing when they brought her in. She found out about her past through a follow-up SPCA Facebook post a few weeks later. “I cried when I found out. I was at the vet with her when I saw the post. It was hard to read, we just love her,” she says. Danielle and the team at SPCA Nelson are also thrilled with Nora’s rehoming. “It’s really important to us to make sure we send these dogs to the right home and Nora’s story is a prime example. She’s a superstar,” says Danielle.

Pic’s Peanut Butter has kicked off a project to see if its peanuts can be grown locally in New Zealand rather than being imported from Australia. The Nelson company’s project is being backed by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) which is contributing more than $59,000 to the trial. The trial is being held at three locations - on a kumara farm at Ruawai, on the Pouto Peninsula near Dargaville, and on Māori land in the Kai Iwi Lakes district. The peanuts were planted in late October and are expected to be ready for harvest within 16 to 20 weeks. Plant & Food Research is providing its expertise and managing the project trials, which use Spanish Hi Oleic peanuts. Its science business manager, Declan Graham, says the three locations had different soil types and environments to see where peanuts grew best. "A soil temperature of around 18 degrees is ideal, so the window for getting the peanuts in the ground and harvesting them is small," Declan says.

"This type of peanut is most widely used in confectionary and snacks, as well as peanut butter production. Their high oil content makes them ideal for crushing." It wouldn't be smooth sailing for the project as they juggled other aspects, including weed control and pests. Pic's Peanut Butter currently uses about 2500 tonnes of peanuts a year. Picot Productions owner and founder Pic Picot says it had always felt a little weird to make the iconic product with imported ingredients. "These trials have the potential to make a very real difference to our carbon footprint and
redirect the millions of dollars we spend on imported nuts to Northland, easily my second favourite region of New Zealand," Pic says. MPI investment programmes director Steve Penno said if it was successful, peanut farming could bring new employment opportunities to Northland and boost the local economy. "This project fits perfectly with our goal of funding projects that will make a positive and lasting difference," Steve says. "This project has the potential to lead to a new industry in Northland, which will bring new value into the region and create more jobs for New Zealanders."

Active fire permits in Nelson and Tasman have been placed on a 48-hour suspension by Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Principal rural fire officer Ian Reade says the fire permit exclusion is effective immediately, with the exception of Nelson Lakes, Murchison and Golden Bay West. “Like quite a bit of the country, we are on high alert due to the predicted weather forecast … It is also to conserve resources should we be asked to assist in any large wildfire emergency occurring within the Te Tau Ihu region.” Permits are suspended in the following areas: Coastal rural, coastal urban, Waimea rural, Nelson rural, Nelson urban, Golden
Bay east and Golden Bay beaches. Ian says a spark is all it takes to start a wildfire in dry conditions. “We are asking builders and contractors to take extra care using power tools that might cause sparks in the open air. This is particularly important for grinding and cutting metals, especially if they are near vegetation.” Ian says this also goes for people planning to use farm machinery or even mow their lawns in the heat of the day. “Please pay particular attention to the weather and local fire danger.” It comes as Fire and Emergency is calling for people to be extra vigilant. The suspension will be reassessed if the conditions ease. People can check their local fire danger and fire season status at checkitsalright.nz

Woman charged over crash that killed kayaker Staff Reporter A woman has been charged over a Nelson crash that claimed the life of champion kayaker Andrew Charles Martin four months ago. Andrew died in a vehicle pileup on September 27 on State Highway 6 near Whangamoa that also left his daughter Lucy critically injured. His ex-wife Jane was also injured.
The road was closed between Nelson and Rai Valley for several hours. Andrew, a 58-year-old renowned kayak craftsman and kayaker, set up Andrew Martin Kayaks in New Plymouth, then went on to Legend Paddles, before forming Flow Kayaks with fellow world champion multi-sport athlete Richard Ussher, which they had since sold.
Flow's website said Andrew had "competed in nearly every competitive kayaking discipline including representing New Zealand in Slalom, Wildwater racing and Marathon". In a statement, police said a 24-year-old Blenheim woman has been charged with aggravated careless driving causing death in relation to the fatal crash. She has also been charged
with four counts of aggravated careless driving causing injury. The woman is due to appear in Nelson District Court on February 15. After Andrew’s death, Richard Ussher posted his heartache of Martin's death on Facebook, writing that he was "lost for words to hear of the tragic passing of Andrew Martin. A true friend. Rest In Peace mate". Richard said he'd known
Andrew for almost 20 years after he had moved to Nelson from New Plymouth. "All round the country, especially in the paddling and multisport communities, he touched a lot of people and obviously he was an exceptional athlete in his own right as well. "He certainly leaves a big hole in those communities and leaves a pretty amazing legacy to the sport as well."
Classical music magic on display for Nelson Adam Summer Celebration will be the perfect long weekend of creativity, spontaneity and chamber music magic at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts. Due to the restrictions on international travel, the 2021 Adam Chamber Music Festival has been postponed until February 2022, which leaves an opportunity for a smaller-scale “in-between” event featuring some of New Zealand’s leading chamber musicians. Co-Artistic Director Gillian Ansell says it was heart-breaking when the biennial Adam Chamber Music Festival was postponed, but the celebration is definitely a silver lining. “We’re just so thrilled to be planning and preparing for live performances again, and even more so when it’s with fellow musicians of such calibre. Jonty Dine Nelson MP Rachel Boyack is putting her words into action as she makes the switch from car to e-bike. Rachel has ditched the four wheels for two in a bid to reduce her carbon footprint. Her new ride, from Nelson-based Hybrid Bikes, sports Rachel’s face and the Labour brand. “I think it is a great opportunity
to show that leadership, it’s about saying I am taking some action. When we tackle climate change, we need action at an individual, community, business and government level.” Rachel says there will still be a car at home, however, she will use the bike as often as possible. “My husband needs use of a vehicle that doesn’t have my face on it and there will be times when I will need to travel with
other people, but for my daily commute into the office and meetings around the city, there is no need for me to have a car.” Rachel says she has been loving the feeling of the wind in her hair and zipping past the queues of traffic. “The great thing is you still build up some fitness too.” Rachel and the Labour government are actively encouraging more people to make the switch to electric. However, she is appreciative of fact a lot of people would like an e-bike but can’t afford it. “I think that’s where the Government can potentially look at some policy, the challenge is the cost of purchasing a bike to start with, but we are seeing the prices come down.” Hybrid Bikes owner Frank Witowski says they are becoming one of the fastest selling brands in New Zealand and abroad. His carbon fibre designs have gained international acclaim for their light weight and carbon friendly manufacture. Labour recently announced a raft of measures to help meet New Zealand’s 2050 carbon neutral target, create new jobs and boost innovation. It comes as the Climate Change Commission releases a report into how the country can achieve those goals.

Rare king shag roost spotted on Nelson coast Staff Reporter Researchers have been surprised to discover a previously unknown king shag roost site on the Nelson coastline. Nelson City Council recently carried out a coastal bird survey to gain a better understanding of significant habitats for coastal bird species on the Nelson coastline. The focus of the survey was on variable oystercatcher and banded dotterel, but the opportunity was taken to survey for other shore and coastal birds such as gulls, terns and herons. While the survey results are still being compiled, the unexpected discovery of south of Cape Soucis has caused great excitement among the conservation community. The New Zealand king shag is endemic to Aotearoa and were thought to be restricted to the outer Marlborough Sounds. About 50 per cent of all existing birds are located at two colonies: Duffers Reef and Trio Islands. The birds sighted included adults, first year birds and sub adults. Previously ornithologists had only recorded individual young birds close to Abel Tasman National Park. If the birds recorded are breeding
it would be an important range extension for this species, and would be “most significant” according to king shag expert Rob Schuckard. Survey leader Nikki McArthur noted that this is the first and only communal king shag roost site recorded within the council’s coastal marine area. With the population at only around 800 birds, a range expansion for this species could help provide a more resilient population. With such a small population and restricted distribution this species is vulnerable to single adverse weather events so could also be affected by climate change and related adverse weather events. “King shag belongs to the blue-eyed shags, of which the six New Zealand species have relatively small populations and are all classified as either ‘Threatened’ or ‘At Risk’,” Rob Schuckard says. King shag predominantly occupy remote rocks in the outer Marlborough Sounds and about 50 per cent of king shag breed and forage in the Pelorus Sound.” Researchers will monitor the roosting site for any breeding behaviour over the winter months, to see if the birds are establishing a colony there.

This is what happened to me when having a bathroom refit. Mitre 10 did not have the stock and it was 20 days before the goods came for my shower and vanity. There were four contractors coming and going for three to four months, one or two days a week. Very hard at the time but I survived. Both items were made in New Zealand, too. Historic mansion up for sale Staff Reporter A 100-year-old Nelson mansion is up for sale. The house at 54 Brougham St was built between 1913 and 1918 and is down the street from the 1930s home of Griffin Biscuit and Confectionery heir, Charles Griffin. While searching through the archives of the Nelson Provincial Museum, the current owner found original images of the pre-war home. Thought to have been taken in the early 1900s, the images show the house in various stages of completion, including encased in sapling scaffolding which pre-dated steelwork frames. "To have a visual record of a home's rich history is so rare and very special," Bayleys Nelson salesperson Caroline Devereux said. "Benefitting from meticulous refurbishment that has retained the property's unique character features, it's incredible to see the northfacing silhouette relatively unchanged after more than a century," the current owner says. Third time’s a charm for Gang Show Kate Russell It was cancelled twice last year due to Covid-19, but the Nelson Scouts Gang Show is finally hitting the stage next month. The show’s co-director Bridget Smith says it had to be cancelled in July and again in September. It is now going ahead at the Theatre Royal from February 25 -27. Bridget says the wait has given them the change to repolish the two-hour long, family-friendly variety show. “There will be something for everyone, young and old, with well-known songs from Hairspray, Aladdin and Hocus Pocus.” Lollypop ladies, a school scene, classic Scout sketches and even some fairies and chickens will be making an appearance. “We will also be opening the show with a Covid-19 related song. It really is a full-on variety show with lots of singing and dancing. It will be fun for absolutely everybody.” The cast of 38 is made up of Scout and Guide members from around the region, ranging in age from 10 years
old to 77. Bridget says they have been rehearsing every Sunday for seven hours. “It has been so much for watching the entire cast come together and seeing them click with the songs. We are having so much fun, there have been so many happy smiles. “The other thing that is special for Nelson, is that the stage crew have built a 300kilo set piece for the show.” Gang Shows originated in London in 1932 and came to New Zealand in the 1950s. They have been performed regularly throughout the country ever since. The Nelson show was rebooted in 2018 after a 27year hiatus, thanks to Bridget and her husband, Mike. “We think the first Nelson Gang Show was in 1969, but then it stopped in the 1980s.” Bridget encourages people to come out and see the show. “Come and support us, as we’ve had so much trouble with Covid-19.” The Nelson Scouts Gang Show is on from February 25 - 27. Taking place in parks throughout the region, Summer Movies Al Fresco this year incorporates some modern classics into its line-up and finishes with a special screening of What Really Happened; Waitangi 2011 at Founders Heritage Park on Waitangi Day, Saturday 6 February. Community and recreation committee chair Tim Skinner says the movies were another great reason to get out and enjoy the many parks our region has to offer. “There’s something really special about going along to an open-air movie, and combining that with the beautiful natural environment of our parks really enhances that experience into something pretty magical. Brook Sanctuary founder leaves legacy Staff Reporter A man who spent 20 years working to make the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary a reality leaves a tremendous legacy for future generations, say colleagues. Brook Waimarama Sanctuary founding trustee David Butler passed away on 20 December, 2020. He was an ornithologist and conservation biologist whose huge contribution to his field was recognised in June 2020 with a Queen’s Service Medal. He was chair of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust from its establishment in 2004 until 2019. Fellow trustee and founding member Derek Shaw says that Dave leaves a tremendous legacy for future generations with his long leadership role and work on establishing the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. “This legacy also extends throughout the country and to numerous Pacific nations through his work on many other ecological restoration projects, such as the Nature Recovery Project at St Arnaud in Nelson Lakes National Park.” The Brook Sanctuary Project created a 700ha fenced nature reserve in the former Nelson City Council waterworks reserve in the headwaters of the Brook stream. It was first conceived in 2001. Dave took on the role of chair of the founding steering group and
subsequently became chair of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust when it was established in 2004, only stepping down due to health issues in April 2019. Mayor Rachel Reese says that Dave’s QSM for his contributions to conservation recognised just how much he had given to the Nelson community. “Dave’s work was vital in taking the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary from an idea to a reality. “Whilst it was undoubtedly due to the effort of many dedicated people, Dave showed great leadership and determination to achieve a legacy we can all be proud of.” On receiving his QSM, Dave told local media that he shared the award with his wife Donna and their two daughters whose support “enabled him to work so hard on the sanctuary”. "I feel very much that I'm accepting the award on behalf of quite a team of people who have been working with me," he said. Ru Collins, chief executive of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, says that during Dave’s tenure as Chair the hard work to establish the sanctuary was achieved. ”We’re now in a position to embark on the next stage of engaging with the community behind the sanctuary, improving the visitor experience and restoring the living ecosystem so we can celebrate what we have as well as looking at future species re-introductions.”

The Nelson Griffins are bringing home the Hawke Cup. Nelson has won the coveted trophy for a twelfth time after playing out a draw with Canterbury Country at Mainpower Oval over the weekend. Centuries from Nic Clarke (172) and Joseph O’Connor (120) helped the Griffins post a daunting total of 365 in its first innings. In trouble at 57-4, the pair came together to compile a staggering 271-run partnership, batting for almost 100 overs. It looked as if Nelson would make easy work of Canterbury’s line-up, with the cup holders struggling to 162-8 before the tail
well and truly wagged. Zak Foulkes grinded his way to 92 from 255 balls backed up by his number ten Fraser Sheat with 76. Thomas Zhorab would eventually make a double breakthrough as he took 4/48 to dismiss the hosts for 325. Nelson would score 54/1 in its second turn at bat and after a long and completive three days, the game was declared a draw and Nelson the cup victors. Skipper Brendan Hodgson says it was a huge win against a quality team. “Canterbury Country have set the standard in our zone for a long time and to beat them at home after a comprehensive beating at Marsden Rec earlier in the season was just superb.” Bredan says they knew that runs on the board was their best
chance to win. “Even overnight we knew that batting was their strength, and we could expect a huge battle.” He says credit to Nic and Joseph’s partnership was crucial. “One of the best backs against the wall partnerships I’ve ever seen.” Brendan admits his bowlers didn’t get the ball in the right areas during the final morning session, but the Sheat wicket just before lunch was a huge momentum swing. “Credit to Josh Newport and Thomas, after lunch we managed to build some pressure and got that last wicket.” Nelson has a rich history with the Hawke Cup dating back to 1958. Nelson still holds the record for the most consecutive defences, their 28-match streak from December 1958 to February 1965
well clear of the 15-match tenures achieved by Manawatu (1934-38) and Southland (1989-1992). Nelson’s 14-match tenure from February 1979 to February 1983 represented another indelible chapter in local cricketing history. The Griffins have successfully defended the trophy 71 times. In local action, Wakatu has finished the round robin of the Nelson 50-over competition undefeated. Wakatu made it five wins from five for the season, defeating nearest rivals Stoke/Nayland at Marsden Rec on Saturday. Ryan Edwards ensured his side would set a competitive total with 70 as Stoke was dismissed in the 44th over for 176. Half centuries from Fergus Hughes and Campbell McLean saw Wakatu home with five
wickets to spare. Elsewhere, Waimea Toi Toi picked up an emphatic victory over Wanderers at Jubilee Park. The visitors collapsed to just 55 in 16 overs with Gene Gledhill and AK Dihman taking all ten wickets between them. Gledhill did most of the damage claiming 6/44 while Dihman took the superb figures of 4/11 off eight. In reply, Waimea made light work of the modest target, Jon Routhan finishing 24no off 19 as his side got home in the just the sixth over with nine wickets in hand. Max endures pain to stay in the game Jonty Dine Max Bellis’ body isn’t quite why it used to be. The 85-year-old has had his left knee replaced, while the right is beginning to fail him. However, he is prepared to endure the pain for the game he loves. Max was one of hundreds of veteran players defying their age at the Pascoes TennisNZ Seniors National Championships held in Nelson. The local stalwart and oldest player in the tournament played four games over the weekend, pushing his physical limits. “I am very tired and a bit achy, but I play through all these pain barriers, because unfortunately I do still love it.”
Max competed in both doubles and singles, the latter of which is becoming more difficult for him to keep up. “It is very noticeable playing singles, it is strictly a running game, and if you can’t run, you can’t play.” While he struggled with his running, across the court, Max says he still hits the ball pretty well. His first match ended in a win by default after his opponent withdrew with a pulled hamstring. “It was a bit of a shame because it was a close game, I lost the first set 6-2, but l was getting his measure.” Max’s second singles match was against 81-year-old top seed Gary Pike. “He was no slug, I got one game
in though. He was super fit and all over the court, I played some good shots, but they kept coming back.” It was a similar story in the doubles as Max and his partner Bill Unwin took on national champions David Hawkes and Steve Molnar, losing 6-0, 6-0. “They made it very hard, but we just had to keep trying and I ran my little old heart out.” Max and Bill did manage to pick up a set in their final match of the tournament. Max has been swinging a racquet for close to 75 years and still plays three times a week at the Stoke courts. He has won a slew of national titles in his storied career, however, he admits he may not have many more years in him.

It is one of the only grade six trails in Nelson.” Belinda says the team will need to ensure it complies with the regulations necessary for a national event which puts a big emphasis on safety. Nelson is also experiencing a dry spell, with the current fire risk sitting a ‘blue’ to cast some doubt over the event. “It is heading in wrong direction, but we are confident we will get through to next weekend,” says Belinda. Spectators are invited to come and watch some of the fastest downhill mountain bikers in New Zealand with practice runs set to start at 9.30am and racing from 1.30pm. “It has a great finish and a big keyhole area where everyone can view.” Belinda says among the local riders will be Louise Kelly who is a favourite to win the elite women having won the 2020 Nelson DH series while Aidan Limmer and Shannon Hewetson will be ones to watch in the men’s.
It was Tuesday evening when the Nelson Mountain Biking Club got the call. With the fire risk in Marlborough too great, the decision was made to move round three of the National Downhill series to Nelson. Despite having just ten days to prepare, the club happily accepted the hosting rights. The first step was to consult with the landowners, Tasman Pine Forest and Ngāti Koata, both of whom swiftly approved the event. Belinda Crisp says, while there is a lot to organise, they have a skilled team of volunteers that know the drill. “It will be a huge task for NMTBC to pull it together but thanks to amazing volunteers and a supportive community we are looking forward to the event.” Close to 120 riders are expected for the race to be held on Sunday, February 7, in the Sharlands Mountain Bike Park on the iconic ‘Kaka’ trail which has been used for National

More than 500 swimmers raced over 3.3km in the Interislander Swim the Lighthouse race in Wellington on Sunday. Nelson swimmers Oxford Bayley and Abbey Smale topped the podium in the second event of this season's Banana Boat Series, Bayley improving one place from Swim the Shore in December, while Smale continued her unbeaten record in six consecutive races, after winning in Takapuna. Following a blustery, cold Wellington Saturday, the sun rose in a cloudless sky on race day. Hardly a ripple disturbed the water. Alex Dunkley of Auckland led the way for the first 1200m from Oriental Bay Beach to the Pt Jerningham Lighthouse, with Bayley and Wellington's Luke Kuggeleijn tucked in behind. A second group contained Smale, along with Bronson Lloyd and Eligh Ashby of Wellington. A slight choppiness arose in the approach to the lighthouse, but things smoothed out as the swimmers headed into the 1500m leg back towards downtown Wellington. Bayley decided it was time to make a move. "I just started to ride the waves and eased past Alex as we headed towards town," he said. Dunkley didn't allow the leader much leeway, but couldn't bridge that initial break, with Bayley retaining a margin of 20

seconds all the way to the finish. It was a further 40 seconds back to Kuggeleijn. More than two minutes passed before Lloyd and Smale crossed the finish line. Alice Adams of Auckland was the second woman to finish, a minute and 20 seconds behind Smale, with Allesandra Unsworth of Wellington, Jodie Lovell of Blenheim and Christina Harris of Nelson in a virtual photo finish for the next placings. All through the field, some of New Zealand's best swimmers of recent decades dominated their age groups, with 79-year-old Bishop Derek Eaton of Nelson finishing in 97th place of the 507 to complete the event. Eaton wasn't the oldest in the field, that honour going to Peter Wilkinson of Auckland, who won M80-84, finishing in 297th place in a time of 1hr 3min 2sec. Other Nelson successes in Wellington included age group gold to Christina Harris (F55-59), Angus Perham (M6064), Ben Van Dyke (M70-74) and Eaton (M75-79) and silver to Rebecca Hollingsworth (F30-34), who now lives in Wellington and Dick Bennison (M6569). Nelson bronze medal winners were Austen Dean (M25-29) and Maggy Johnston (F65-69). Swimmers also raced over distances of 1000m, 500m, 200m and 100m. Race three of the Banana Boat Series, the longest of the seven-race series, is the 5km Generation Homes Le Grande Swim in Akaroa on February 20.
