Local builders face national shortages Erin Bradnock Local builders, plumbers and electricians continue to face supply shortages across the country as supply lines are stretched by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Michael Bensemann at Nelson Builders says they’re experiencing delays on supplies that they would not normally see. “Supply of framing timber and standard materials is still okay. But when ordering a custom or
special-order, delays of 1-4 weeks are happening. In some instances, the client has to select from a limited range,” he says. Michael says builders are also facing price increases of materials in the two to seven per cent range.
“This will further impact building costs along with the delays in supply. To negate this, we are making material choices with our clients earlier in the build process, but ultimately, we are at the mercy of the supply chain.”

Cannabis arcade locked down in garage Charles Anderson Steven Gray never thought he would be housing a dismantled cannabis museum in his garage. “But hey, you know, things happen.” His son Abe Gray has long been at the forefront of cannabis advocacy in New Zealand and, as part of that, in 2013 he founded the Whakamana: the Cannabis Museum of Aotearoa. It grew from being housed in a flat in Dunedin, to a larger space, then moved to Christchurch and then Wellington, where it sat until Covid-19 lockdown struck. That threw the project into limbo. With nowhere to house myriad items about the science, politics and sociology of cannabis, Abe fell back on his parents.
“Abe basically called up and said, ‘I need to store this stuff ’ and I said ‘yes’. But it’s not really my era. If it were pinball machines, then I would be down with it.” Steven says the museum started as a public education tool and then it gained momentum and became much more polished. “For being a totally shoestring effort, it was really impressive, and he got a lot of visitors, especially international visitors. They even had an exhibition within the museum that explored the connection between early arcade games and cannabis use. “The early video game industry story is very interesting,” says Steven. “But it turns out the creators were mostly stoners.”

Steve describes the situation as “frustrating” having to wait three months for some special fittings. Jackson Plumbing, Gas Fittings and Drainlaying say they are lucky to have stocked up on parts before the pandemic got too bad, according to owner Grant Jackson. “It hasn’t been as bad as I anticipated as we did stock up as Covid hit. A lot of our stock is made in New Zealand, but overseas stuff is an issue,” he says.

Now, all that material is in Steven’s garage, including a collection of vintage arcades. But he thought, rather than just stack it up and forget about it, he has lined them all up, plugged in and ready to play. “We thought from time to time that we would have parties or invite people up, and they would come in handy.” There are hundreds of games on the machines – from Pac Man to Twin Cobra, Space Invaders to Street Fighter. Recently Abe brought his family to Nelson for a holiday and the arcades managed to even engage his 11-year-old, who is usually more interested in Minecraft. Abe has recently moved to Auckland for his wife’s work and is hopeful there will be a future for the museum in the country’s biggest city. But until then the museum items and the arcades will stay with Steven. After all, his friends are already badgering him about adding those vintage pinball machines to the collection. “We will see,” says Steven.

The Nelson Hospital has been a point of contention for close to a decade. One of its buildings, the George Manson Block, is in the worst condition of any hospital facility in the country. With redevelopment long overdue, the Labour government has committed to beginning construction before the 2023 election. Health Minister Andrew Little visited the hospital last week and says it is not a question of whether there will be a new building, but when. “We will be making decisions at the end of the year and I expect construction will begin at the end of this parliament term.” Andrew says this decision will be made on the back of years of consultation and planning. As well as being earthquake prone, the layout also causes issues for staff. “The expectations of patient care are different to what they were when these buildings were built,” Andrew says. With Labour investing $3.5 billion in capital infrastructure,

Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says Nelsonians continue to tout health as the city’s biggest issue. “I have been working with the DHB since I was elected and I’m really confident in the process around the rebuild”. Rachel says we are now getting to “the pointy end.” “It has been a long process, but it needs to be to get it right. If you
rush a rebuild on something like a hospital you will end up cutting corners or making poor decisions.” Rachel says, as well as increasing staff safety, a new building could improve productivity. “I have been hearing from staff that they want to see an improved layout, as well as an earthquake strengthening component. It is about how we can improve the health service provision and there are some really clever things we can do there.”

Nelson leads the way in Kai Festival cancelled B4 School Checks Staff Reporter
Kate Russell Nelson kids like Wulf Green will be starting school this year with a big check mark. The Nelson South Kindergarten student has just completed his B4 School Check, which is a free health and development check for kids about to start school. According to Nelson Marlborough Health, the region is leading nationally for completion of B4 School Checks as well as for Māori, Pasifika and families who are in lower socioeconomic circumstances. “Our public health nurses are leading the country and go the extra mile for vulnerable families,” says Nicola Thompson, charge nurse manager in the public health service. The national target for checks is 90 per cent of all four-year-olds in our region - that equates to 1,454 children, with a team of 14 public health nurses and three vision and hearing technicians completing 80 - 100 checks each month. Wulf ’s mum, Jess Green, says the check is a good way to bring up any concerns about starting school. “It’s also great to be able to do it in his kindergarten environment.” It includes checking height, weight and teeth and provides any advice on health and development the family might

Nicola says they are “extremely important”. “As well as being able to identify any issues or unmet needs and provide support for children and their whanau before they start school, they offer positive parenting support.” She says, during the Covid-19 lockdown they had look at different ways of providing checks. “We were fortunate to have the trust to be allowed back in to the early childhood centres relatively early, post lock-down.” The team also do home visits for hard-to-
reach whānau, and, since Covid-19, have started offering phone call consultations. “We also have good relationships with Te Piki Oranga and the Pasifika Trust, which is useful if we are having difficulties contacting families/whānau.” They also visit low decile ECEs more regularly than advised, with nurses running regular clinics at low decile ECEs. They also offer an interpreter service for families for whom English is a second language. Meanwhile, for Wulf, he is now ready to start Wakefield School in May having finished his check.
Whakatū Marae and Founders Heritage Park have cancelled this year’s International Kai Festival. Held annually on Waitangi Day, 6 February, this year’s event was planned to take place at Whakatū Marae and the neighbouring Founders Heritage Park. Whakatū Marae kaiwhakahaere Kim Ngawhika said the past year had been incredibly challenging, and with the threat of Covid-19 still very real, it was imperative whānau wellbeing came first. “This has not been an easy decision, but our Whānau Ora principles implore us to place whānau well-being at the heart of everything we do. “We were so looking forward to catching up with everyone and taking the time to share kai, listen to music and to be together, but with the ongoing threat of Covid-19 in our communities, I believe this is the right decision.” Nelson City Council’s community and recreation committee chair, Tim Skinner, says council fully supports the decision. “While we were looking forward to the International Kai Festival again, the health and well-being of our community is our top priority.” Both Whakatū Marae and Founders Heritage Park are working towards a 2022 event, and are investigating alternative ways to connect with the community and celebrate Waitangi Day. 'I’ve lost everything': Fundraiser underway for Washington Valley house fire victims Erin Bradnock Great-nana, 84-year-old Barbara Strang burnt her hands and forehead trying to extinguish the flames that tore through her Washington Valley home on Sunday afternoon. Barbara was alerted to the fire by her son Colin Strang who lives with her. Her first instinct was to put out the fire by grabbing towels inside the engulfed clothes dryer and tossing them into the neighbouring bathtub. “I heard him telling me to ‘get out’ and that the whole house was going up in flames,” says Barbara. Emergency services attended the “well-involved” house fire on Sunday that saw several rooms destroyed and left the whole property with smoke damage. Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson Riwai Grace says they received multiple calls from 12.43pm alerting them to the house fire at 92 Washington Rd. Nelson and Stoke fire crews arrived at the scene minutes later with a fire investigator being given access to the property shortly after. Gerard Campbell from St John Nelson confirmed two people

Washington Rd address, it was the new dryer that caused the fire. “It was a brand-new dryer to replace an old one, we only got it a week before Christmas.”
Barbara’s room ended up being one of the most damaged and she says it was losing the sentimental items that hurt the most. “I’ve lost everything - photos,
certificates, clothes, my bible. All my stuff is gone,” she says. Rona agrees. “We’ve lost photos of her husband who passed away 27 years ago. We can’t get those memories back,” she says. Rona’s 10-year-old kitten, Bear, also died in the blaze. Rona, Barbara and Colin are staying with family members and Barbara’s granddaughter Anna Mount has set up a Givealittle page to help her nana. “She’s starting from scratch. Overnight we had $550 donated, which is so amazing,” she says. Barbara wanted to express her thanks to Fire NZ, St John, those who donated as well as a certain stranger. “I’d also like to thank the person who lent me his jandals. I was struggling to walk around just after the fire and someone came up to me and gave me their shoes right off their feet. I don’t know who they were, but I’d love to thank them,” she says. New roundabout cuts straight through businesses' bottom line Jacqui Rawson Business owners knew there would be impacts to their business as a result of the roadworks on the Champion Rd-Salisbury Rd roundabout, but initial impacts are hitting harder than expected. “Local businesses are being impacted financially and I can’t imagine what things are going to be like once schools go back,” says Moxini’s owner, Wayne Boote.
Only a week into the major roadworks on the roundabout, two businesses, Raeward Fresh and Zinc Café BBQ & Heating find profits are down by 30 - 40 percent. This amounts to thousands of dollars for Raewards. It’s not only the bottom line affected. Staffing numbers and hours have had to be adjusted to meet the downturn in customers. through the dug-up roads to the businesses and the associated lack of convenience have been keeping customers away. “Signage has not been adequate, but they have been working on improving it,” says Wayne. The roundabout straddles the boundaries of both the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils (TDC) with the current roadworks being project managed by TDC.

The business owners have raised their concerns regarding the impact on their business with TDC and asked for some assistance through rates relief, but this was declined. The tender for the roadworks being undertaken by Fulton Hogan also doesn’t allow for night or weekend work. The project’s forecast for completion is six months and the businesses have concerns that it’ll

Nelson’s Angela McIntosh is not your average aspiring beauty queen. The stay-at-home mum of three and burlesque performer is all about celebrating femininity and personality, and she hopes to make her mark in the Miss Pin Up New Zealand pageant. Angela, who goes by the name ‘Angel Blush,’ is one of seven finalists in the alternative beauty pageant, which will be part of the Very Vintage Day Out in Kumeu this April. “The focus is a bit more on personality than looks. I found out a few weeks ago that I was a finalist, I was really excited.” Angela says she has been “living the pinup lifestyle” for about five years, ever since she decided to ditch her more modern work attire as an accountant. “I wanted to express my femininity and started looking at different styles. I found the vintage look and it grew from there. “Five years ago I also started a family, which has also allowed me to dress how I want.” The Miss Pinup New Zealand pageant is to encourage women of all shapes and sizes to feel confident, step out of their comfort zones and to show their inner and outer beauty through the art of pinup. Angela will be strutting her stuff on the catwalk showcasing daywear, beachwear, and evening wear and performing in the talent section. Her talent will be a burlesque

“I’ve either always been pregnant or breastfeeding, so now it’s a good time for me, and my family have been so supportive.”
Nelsonian comedian Nick Rado, who also happens to be the head writer for satirical TV show 7 Days, is taking his comedy set to America without even setting foot in the country. After spending lockdown in Richmond with his family, the opportunity to produce a comedy album for America’s largest independent comedy production and distribution company, Comedy Dynamics, came up. So, he recently recorded his set at The Playhouse in Mapua in front of a sell-out crowd. “It’s a great way for me to have exposure in America without going over there and getting Covid,” says Nick. “My aim is to get my album to number one in the comedy album charts in the US when it’s released later this year.” The album was recorded over two nights to an audience of over 100 locals at The Playhouse, a venue Nick chose to perform at himself. “The best thing is that people from Nelson and Tasman were in the audience to add laughs and it will be broadcast across America,” says Nick.
The point of difference for Nick is that his set is full of clean Kiwi humour, which is comedy gold overseas. “The album is tried and tested stuff that’s worked all over the world... there’ll be a few things I have to change or roll out a few jokes I used to do when I was performing overseas – gags about me being from New Zealand and such – and I’ll have to say things like grocery store, garbage and ‘aloominim’.” His album is thought to be the first internationally-distributed comedy special to be recorded in the region. “When the album is released around March or April time, I will be calling on all Tasman and Nelsonians to buy the album to help get me to that top spot in the US charts,” says Nick. “It would be very funny to see and hear Americans try to pronounce Mapua.” Kiwis can get their hands on a copy of the album through Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music and several other digital platforms. Darren Lapwood has been delivering the Nelson Weekly in Stoke for seven years - and he has no plans to give it up. He and his partner Rachel Hart are the newspaper’s Deliverers of the Month. They were nominated by an anonymous reader for doing a “great job”. Darren does two runs each week which cover Maitland Ave, Nayland Rd and Main Rd Stoke. Rachel does one run around the Kaka St, Kea St and Neale Ave area. Between them they deliver close to 1000 papers every Wednesday and will also do extra runs around Stoke if need be as well, to help out. Darren says he looks forward to doing his rounds each week, rain or shine.
“One of the best parts of the job is meeting new people.” He says they both use old prams to get the job done, but after seven years “they are getting a bit worn out”. Rachel says she enjoys delivering the paper to the local rest homes. “I get a lot of praise from the residents. I really love it. I like to have some leftover papers for myself too, as I like to read it when I get a chance.” Darren and Rachel both receive a double pass to Nelson’s State Cinemas for their efforts. They are not sure what movie they will go and see yet, but say they look forward to using them. Shanae Yates was relentlessly bullied in high school. Suffering severe cerebral palsy, children would mock her speech and involuntary shaking. “People thought a disability was bad and it held me back from doing what I wanted to do.” This made her angry, and to vent her feelings Shanae would exercise. After willing herself to the
gym, Shanae discovered the psychological benefits of physical fitness. “I could get away from everyone and everything and it helped my mental state. I absolutely love the gym environment because everyone who walks through those doors have one thing in common.” The 25-year-old says she wanted to share the gift she found with others and set upon a path to becoming a personal trainer. After earning her qualifications and doing some
volunteer work in Blenheim, Shanae was recently given her first personal trainer position at CityFitness in Nelson. “This is my dream, and everyone has been really supportive.” Cerebral palsy impairs muscle coordination due to brain damage before or at birth. During particularly bad episodes, Shanae can experience bouts of violent shaking in her upper body. “It is worse when I am tired or nervous, but I don’t let it affect my mind or spirit

It’s a new year and with it comes a new fleet of police cars which are being rolled out across the country, including our local police stations. After General Motors announced it was pulling Holden out of the Australasian market, the decision was made to use Skoda Superb as the new frontline patrol car. The more environmentally-friendly model will become the primary response vehicle, with the first models expected on roads as early as April. The region currently has about 144 cars and light commercial vehicles. Generally, police cars are considered for replacement at an average age of six to seven years or once they clock up 120,000km. When they get retired from the fleet, they are sold off through Turners Auctions. “We aren’t in any hurry to get rid of the old cars, but it will be nice to get some new vehicles eventually,” says Senior Sergeant Hamish Chapman of Nelson Police. Police also tested electric and hybrid vehicles, but due to power efficiency and the overall ownership cost, they were not the preferred option. However, the evaluation provided practical learnings for their future implementation.

The speed bumps on the road are great but there should’ve been one up the Boundary Rd end near the bend as the idiots that fly around that are an accident waiting to happen. task now is to successfully deploy them. We must learn from implementation problems that occurred with the measles and flu vaccination programmes in 2018 and 2020. Minister Hipkins told New Zealand last November on vaccines “we will be at the front of the queue.” The reality is that we are already months behind. Millions of people have been vaccinated already in the UK, US, Europe,

2019/20 ANNUAL REPORT Each year in June, Council produces its Annual Plan, which outlines the activities that we will undertake during the following 12 months. At the end of the year, we produce a second document, our Annual Report, which includes a detailed set of audited financial statements.
The Annual Report presents the detail of how successful we were in meeting our goals for that year, what we did well and where we will look to improve. It also includes the income Council has generated, and how much money we have spent. As well as the full Annual Report, we also produce a summary that gives a condensed overview of the key findings and provides a snapshot of Nelson City Council’s performance.

Work at the roundabout will be done in four sections with Section Two (the Raeward Fresh/Zink corner) already underway. Two key things to remember:
Bay Dreams continues to reduce festival waste
Held annually on Waitangi Day, 6 February, this year’s event was planned to take place at Whakatū Marae and neighbouring Founders Heritage Park. However, Whakatū Marae Kaiwhakahaere Kim Ngawhika says the past year has been incredibly challenging, and with the threat of COVID-19 still very real, it is imperative whānau wellbeing comes first. “This has not been an easy decision, but our Whānau Ora principles implore us to place whānau wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. “We were so looking forward to catching up with everyone and taking the time to share kai, listen to music and to be together, but with the ongoing threat of COVID-19 in our communities, I believe this is the right decision.” Nelson City Council Community and Recreation Committee Chair Tim Skinner says: “While we were looking forward to the International Kai Festival again, the health and wellbeing of our community is our top priority, and we fully support the principles of Whānau Ora.” Other events taking place in Nelson on Waitangi Day include a special screening of What Really Happened: Waitangi 2011, from 9pm at Founders Heritage Park and the Adam Summer Celebration: Celebrating NZ at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts at 2pm. Leah’s team of about 80 people, made up of volunteers and temporary staff members, worked throughout the week of the festival ensuring that litter was dealt with, and waste was sorted correctly. “We sort through every single bin on site to make sure that recyclable items don’t go to landfill, and that nonrecyclable items don’t accidentally contaminate batches of recycling.” CLM transformed waste management at the Trafalgar Centre in 2020 with input from Council’s Rethink Waste programme. Beverages and food create the most waste at festivals, and as a result, beer is now sold in easy-to-recycle cans rather than a plastic bottle or cup. Food vendors are contracted to serve customers food in compostable packaging. “This is ordinary practice for us now,” says Leah. “Not just an exception for Bay Dreams. Minimising waste is a focus for all events we have here, it’s just that Bay Dreams is on a different scale!”

New name, new look for Heritage Festival Nelson City Council’s yearly Heritage Festival has been renamed to better reflect Nelson’s rich and varied cultural past. From next year, the festival will be called Tuku 21 Whakatū Heritage Month, with the year in the name changing annually. The name ‘Tuku’ was gifted by iwi, and means “to share” or “exchange” in Te Reo Māori. The name is an expression of our diverse and unique stories and heritage, and reflects the value of bi-culturalism within Aotearoa New Zealand. Tuku 21 Whakatū Heritage Month has evolved from a week of activities, organised mainly by Council, to become community-focused, with multiple organisations and community groups running their own events throughout April. A new logo has also been adopted, featuring raranga, or a traditional woven design. The purple and green strands of the weave represent the partnership of Māori and New Zealand European settlers and the blue and orange represent other significant and diverse cultural groups who have settled in our region. Community and Recreation Committee Chair Councillor Tim Skinner says the rebranded event better represents Nelson's diversity. “We recognise there are many different strands to Nelson’s past, and ensuring we welcome and invite the telling of all of those diverse stories is important to growing the understanding of our city and our community.” Grants of up to $2000 are available now for creative individuals and organisations with ideas to host events or activities in Tuku 21 Whakatū. When the music stops and the revellers go home, Bay Dreams, like many festivals, could have been left with tonnes of waste. But, equipped with a waste management plan and a dedicated team, 2021’s event diverted 79% of the waste from landfill, smashing last year’s record of 66%. Bay Dreams has always aimed to divert waste generated at the event from landfill. For the 2021 festival, waste management was carried out by CLM, which also manages Trafalgar Venues for Nelson City Council. Trafalgar Centre Events Co-ordinator Leah Parker says 85.4 cubic metres or just over four tonnes of waste was collected. “Only 21% of the waste collected has gone to landfill, the rest is recycling and compost, with food waste going to Community Compost. “We’re delighted to have exceeded last year’s record. There are always improvements to be made, but we are really happy with the results.” Community and Recreation Committee Chair Tim Skinner was pleased to see so little waste go to landfill. “We applaud the Bay Dreams organisers for continuing to support waste minimisation – events like this have an important role to play in helping everyone lighten their footprint.” CLM’s waste management plan, in place since October, was made with the help of Council's Rethink Waste

Tasman’s Freedom Camping Ambassadors are out and about again this summer. Their role is to visit the popular freedom camping sites around the region and help holidaymakers to understand our rules and restrictions and to camp responsibly. Thanks to a grant from the central government Responsible Camping Funding, the Ambassadors will be working more hours per week and will be available right through until the end of March. While carrying out their role, which includes promoting caring for the environment, helping campers to find appropriate camping sites, and explaining the rules around freedom camping in our District, the Ambassadors get to meet a wide variety of visitors to our region.

Change of ownership for local pool store Just before Christmas, there was an exciting development at Para Rubber Nelson – it had a change of ownership. Local couple Alicia Lasenby and her partner Kiley Vedder are delighted with their decision to become the proud new owners of the Haven Road store. Having worked for Para Rubber Nelson for several years, Alicia then managed the store for a year on behalf of the previous managing director, Antony Heyward. Having recently stepped into his role, Alicia’s area of expertise is product knowledge, so if you are looking for something you can’t see in store, just ask! “Whatever your pool requirements, we can help you out,” she says. “Pumps and filters change over time and become obsolete, but we know who to contact to source the best products available on the market.” Alicia’s was pleased when her partner Kiley joined the Para Rubber team in February last year. “He has an engineering background, including many years working as a marine engineer, so he has strong knowledge of the engineering industry and related product needs.” The couple’s son Brock has just finished primary school and is moving onto Nelson Intermediate this year. SPORTS Cricket: Wakatu picked up its fourth straight win in the Nelson 50-over competition on Saturday, knocking off Athletic College Old Boys by four wickets. ACOB would set an impressive total of 253 with half

Top referee returns to his roots Locally Owned and Operated
Once considered one of the best rugby referees in the country, Graham Anderson has returned to Nelson to offer his tutelage to the next generation of men in the middle. He speaks to Jonty Dine about a career that spanned close to 1000 games, including officiating over some legends of the game. A PLAYER’S REF Graham’s rugby journey began as a promising player. He represented the Otago under 20 team with All Blacks Keith Murdoch and Chris Laidlaw before injuries curtailed a promising future. A third dislocated shoulder led him to the decision in 1963 to swap his mouthguard for a whistle. “I got hooked, I loved the laws of the game, I found it fascinating.” Just two years later, the rookie referee made his way to Nelson which he would call home for the next 17 seasons. Regarded as a player’s referee, Graham was given some treasured endorsements over his career. During a club match in which Graham’s son was playing, the opposition in the tunnel expressed concerns of potential
bias, to which one of their teammates, future All Black coach Steve Hansen, replied, ‘don’t worry about Graham, he’s right down the middle’.” Another All Black coach, Laurie Mains, shared similar sentiments during a speech to some of the nation’s best referees, including Graham. Laurie said, ‘referees can upset the results of games with penalties, but when I’m watching Graham Anderson refereeing, I’m relaxed, I know he’s not going to take the game off us’. “I used to find reasons not to blow the whistle rather than looking to blow it,” Graham says. With no video referees, Graham would use his speed to ensure he was always in the right position to make a call. “If the players can see your socks, they will generally accept it.”

Graham only ever sent five players from the field and recalls one infamous red card at Nelson College. After an opposition player king hit the Nelson College fullback, Graham did not hesitate to give him his marching orders. However, the young hothead refused to leave and had to be dragged off the field twice by his coaches. “The schoolboys in the crowd were just roaring, he was a bit of a fiery guy, I think he was eventually banned from the game.” Graham would soon find himself on the national radar and was awarded his first, first-class
game in 1979 with Wellington vs Manawatu at Athletic Park. BETTING ON HIMSELF In 1983 Graham moved to Canterbury to further his refereeing goals at the expense of a budding accounting career. “I would have been a fairly wealthy man had I stayed, but I had a passion.” The move was not only a financial gamble, but there was also every chance Graham could slip down the national referee rankings as it was a notoriously difficult region for Nelsonians to crack. Graham soon made his mark and impressed the local diehards with his fan-friendly style.
Another strength of Graham’s was his speed. Soon after his arrival in Christchurch, The Press newspaper reported that “Anderson must be one of the quickest referees around the field in the country, just have a look at the giant strides he takes”. Graham was now firmly established as one of the nation’s top whistle blowers. The 79-year-old shared the field with legends of the game Sir John Kirwan, Buck Shelford, Steve Hansen, Sean Fitzpatrick, Grant Fox, David Campese, Brian Williams, Zinzan Brooke and many more.

He went on to officiate 54 first-class matches including Ranfurly Shield, and also ran touch at the 1987 Rugby World Cup for France vs Scotland. Graham would also control a particularly memorable All Black trial in Invercargill. In -9-degree temperatures, Graham had to also cope with the looming threat of demonstrators storming the pitch in protest of the 1985 tour to South Africa. A PROFESSIONAL AMATEUR Though referees and players were not paid prior to 1995, Graham took great pride in portraying himself as a professional. It didn’t matter if it was pouring rain, he would be covered in mud after a trip across the Takaka Hill, and would always wash his car the morning of a game.
He dressed himself in a blazer, white shirt and tie, grey pants and shoes, with his refereeing gear looking immaculate. “I always believed if I was tidy, I would referee a tidy game. You are often judged off the field as well, and I wanted to look respectable.” Graham was a student of the game and knew the laws back to front. “I never argued with spectators, coaches or players - you know yourself if you made a mistake. If the cap fits, wear it, if not, let it run off.” When travelling away for games Graham would always stay the night before and the night of. “I could go anywhere from Auckland to Invercargill and there would be someone I know.” His training regimen was also
extensive as he would entertain neighbours as they watched a man referee an invisible game, pretending to call penalties and running short sprints to mimic runaway tries. “They used to say I looked like a scared rabbit.” Graham is dedicated to the game on and off the field, having tutored new referees for their national certificate for 17 years. He also helped oversee the amalgamation of Nelson and Golden Bay Motueka in 1969. Following the death of his wife, Graham fulfilled a promise to her to move back to Nelson after living in Australia. One of his first stops upon his return was the Tasman Referees’ room where he offered his help. “I still have a passion and think I can offer something.”

Dominik Berghamer If you followed the news and social media recently you could have come to the conclusion that NZ waters have become majorly shark infested all of a sudden. There have been sightings of bronze whalers, blue, thresher and mako sharks all over the Bay and a few spearos had some close calls when sharks took the fish they had shot. Should we be concerned? Probably not. The influx of large predators at this time of the year is a very normal occurrence and just happens to get a lot more media coverage this year. There is lots of bait in the Bay that attracts these majestic fish and even a dead whale with its own following got washed up. Sharks can detect wounded fish and burley trails from miles away so it’s no surprise they show up around boats. They are inquisitive and quite intelligent which means
that there are most likely a few bronze whalers out there now that associate spearfishermen with an easy meal (the shot fish, not the person). Not exactly a comforting thought but it doesn’t seem to deter many divers. The risk to beachgoers appears to be minimal, no serious shark attacks have been recorded in Tasman Bay over the last 200 years. The worst was a surfer knocked off his board by a bronze whaler outside the Boulder Bank in 2011. He got away with minor injuries. On the beach itself there was an incident in 2010 when a shark bumped into a swimmer without actually biting. There are also hundreds of huge stingrays that patrol our beaches but since they seem to be pretty docile - if you leave them alone - the incidence rate is very low, too. www.dawnbreakers.co.nz Tight lines!

Tennis vets prove age is no barrier Jonty Dine Their speed across court may have slowed slightly, but the skills will be just as sharp as some of the country’s best veteran tennis players get set for action in Nelson this weekend. The Pascoes TennisNZ Seniors National Championships gets underway on Saturday with more than 200 players entered, playing in 60 events. Among the highly-experienced stars will be New Zealand champions Quenton Maisey and Peter Hampton, locals Penny and Steve Molnar and the Seeman siblings. The International Tennis Federation Category 2 event will run through until Wednesday, February 3. Competitions will be held at Nelson Lawns, Stoke, Richmond and Hope Tennis Clubs with play getting underway at 8.30am and running until late afternoon. Age categories will range from 35 and over all the way up to 80 years-plus, with singles and doubles bragging rights all up for grabs. The tournament has a storied history with the first event dating back to 1974 at Mitchell
