Phill Kemp was just going for his morning coffee at Street Food on Washington when he thought he may as well enter the ‘Cash for Christmas’ competition. “I just thought ‘why not’. You have got to be in to win.” The competition, run by Nelson Weekly and Uniquely Nelson, gave shoppers at 32 retailers around the city the chance to win hundreds of dollars in vouchers every week and also put them in the draw for a grand prize of $5000 cash. Phill was busy in his day job painting houses when he got the call from the Nelson Weekly saying he was the winner of that prize. “It was amazing. It’s great for Christmas. We have the family coming so we will have no problem spending it.” The money was loosely already earmarked for presents and general holiday spending. The whole experience made Phill an even bigger fan of Street Food on Washington, which opened in October. “It’s a good place here. Great food.”

Health board investigated for workplace breaches

Senior health board management have come under fire over staff workload pressures, bullying and mental distress, a Nelson Weekly investigation has found. Government body WorkSafe New Zealand is demanding

improvements from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s (NMDHB) alcohol and drug addiction services department, saying it has likely breached the law. WorkSafe last week issued two ‘Improvement Notices’ to Jane Kinsey – the DHB’s general manager of mental health, addictions and disability

support services. The notices, which have gone on display for staff, say that the DHB have, or are likely to have, contravened the Health and Safety Act 2015. The WorkSafe inspector who led the investigation says that mental health concerns are not being addressed properly. “There are risks around

workload fatigue and stress that are not being effectively controlled and there is no evidence of effective processes for case load management and balancing workloads,” the inspector wrote. They say that staff need to develop appropriate training around bullying, harassment and discrimination.

Public Service Association organiser Mike Cunliffe says the situation in the department has been untenable for several years and the organisation has “significant and longstanding concerns for the health, safety and wellbeing of staff ”.

Tahunanui Primary School principal Barbara Bowen was ‘devastated’ to learn that a fire started early Saturday morning on school grounds was lit by ex-students. The fire had been lit in the early hours of Saturday morning on the deck outside a classroom, causing $20,000 worth of damage to the newlybuilt structure. Barbara was alerted to the fire at 5.30am on Saturday morning by Fire and Emergency New Zealand, which spent around 40 minutes extinguishing the flames. “It was a gutting call to get as we just finished the build last term. The deck had been a project all year,” she says.

“As an organisation, we consider NMDHB senior management have not lived up to their responsibilities and duty of care.” The notices come four months after a staff member died in a suspected suicide in what a former colleague alleges was partially the result of extreme job stress. The colleague previously told the Nelson Weekly the job took place in a “powerless and humiliating” work environment. When the DHB was asked to comment on the improvement notices it said it was “considering and discussing” them. Then Jane Kinsey simply reissued the same statement she gave to the Weekly in October saying how the department has been faced with an increase in referrals to the service.

Special needs child hoping to call Nelson home for Christmas Jonty Dine Reporter

A ten-year-old Filipino girl who was ordered to leave the country because of her special needs is still awaiting her fate. The Nelson Central School student had her student visa denied by immigration back in September due to a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD, requiring an hour a day of learning support. Despite a desperate by her parents and an offer to pay for their daughter’s treatment of $120 per week, they were rejected, meaning the young girl has been living here illegally. Nelson-based list MP Nick Smith says the situation is a clear case of injustice, however he has been promised an answer from immigration by Christmas regarding the child’s future. “If it is not a positive decision, I will take it to the Human Rights Commission as it is a blatant breach of fundamental rights for children.” Nick says, though the threat of deportation still stands there is no good reason for deporting this child when her special needs costs are small and can be easily met by the family. “The best Christmas present we could deliver to this family is the reassurance they can stay in New Zealand. I have been

Photo: Jonty Dine. surprised that it has taken so long, being such an obvious case of injustice.” Nick was pleased however that the child was allowed to remain at school despite the deportation order. “We are relieved we have been able to ensure this girl’s education was able to continue under special approval for the remainder of 2020.” The girl's mother says it has been an incredibly stressful situation, causing her sleepless nights and an overwhelming sense of guilt. "We want to stay together as a family, it has been like emotional torture. It will split our family." Immigration New Zealand

wrote on September 1 to the girl saying they were declining her application for the reconsideration of her student visa because the girl was receiving Ongoing Resourcing Scheme support. They have lived in Nelson for the past two years, the father working for a specialist aviation company and her mother as an aged carer. The girl's principal says she is a beloved student. "She's become a very special part of our school since she arrived here and we don't want her to go." She says that special needs children have a place in schools that enriches everybody.

Nelson’s new Coastguard New speed rescue vessel takes shape limits for SH6 Staff Reporter

Work is well underway on Coastguard Nelson’s $1.4m purpose-built rescue vessel, which is now almost 90 per cent complete. It is currently undergoing installation of electrics, navigation electronics and other systems, and is about to receive its colourful new livery. The engines and jet units are installed, with the vessel on track to be finished and ready for its sea trials in early January. Coastguard’s CEO Callum Gillespie was recently in Nelson to check out the progress, along with Sealord CEO Doug Paulin - and to meet with the volunteers who give countless hours to ensure the success of the project. Callum says the new vessel is a game changer for Coastguard Nelson and the community it serves. “Not only is it a capable machine that ensures the volunteers have the right tools and equipment to complete their lifesaving work, but it also supports exceptional health and safety standards for our crew during search and rescue operations, as well as those they bring on board.” As the naming rights sponsor, contributing $215k to the cause, Sealord helped kick-start the boat build earlier in the year.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has confirmed that new permanent speed limits and variable speed limits for school zones have been introduced on State Highway 6 between Blenheim and Nelson. The decision follows formal consultation in 2019 on a proposal to introduce safer speed limits along the high-risk corridor. In the ten years between 2009 and 2018, 20 people were killed and 92 were seriously injured on SH6 between Blenheim and Nelson. Waka Kotahi director regional relationships Jim Harland says the changes will make SH6 safer for everyone who uses it and improve safety for the many schools and communities on the highway between Blenheim and Nelson. “We are utterly focused on reducing injuries and saving lives, and no matter what causes a crash, speed is always a factor in the severity of the crash outcomes,” he says. More than 1000 formal submissions were received during the consultation process, which were then analysed and considered alongside safety assessments before a decision was made. The changes will reduce the existing 100kmh limits to 80kmh in places, introduce new 90kmh speed limits on some sections of the state highway, reduce the speed limit in Atawhai from 80kmh to 60kmh and introduce two new variable school speed zones. Three existing advisory school speed zones on the route will remain unchanged.

Sealord has been charged with naming the vessel and has sought input from Te Tau Ihu iwi, with the name to be unveiled when the boat is formally launched in March next year. Coastguard Nelson President Pete Kara says the vessel is being built to serve “the community who have contributed so

much”. Pete says the Coastguard team is looking forward to what is shaping up to be the busiest summer on the water yet with Kiwi’s spending time in their own backyard due to Covid-19 restrictions. “Servicing your engine, checking batteries are holding charge and replacing old fuel can go a long way to helping people enjoy their time out on the water. Taking and wearing life jackets goes without saying, they’ve never ruined a day out on the water.”

Special Santa Parade just for young Gabby Erin Bradnock

Parade organiser Murry Leaning was heartbroken to hear Gabby couldn’t make it to the Nelson Santa Parade earlier this month due to health complications. “The reason we put the Santa Parade together was so that

Gabby, 10, has an extremely rare genetic disorder called dyskeratosis congenita and aplastic anaemia which leaves sufferers vulnerable to disorders that impair bone marrow function and at high risk of developing various cancers. It is estimated that she is one of five people to have been diagnosed with the lifethreatening condition in New

Within a week, Murray, the Santa Parade Trust and the Hits Nelson were able to put together a smaller-scale parade. It was led by Stoke’s Celtic Pipe Band with muscle cars, Irish dancing, clowns, mermaids, firetrucks, police and Santa himself in tow for Gabby and her neighbours, who turned out in droves.

Gabby was smiling from ear to ear the whole parade which lasted about 40 minutes, graciously waving and thanking floats as they passed by her front yard surrounded by her friends and family. “It was very cool, my favourite part was the mermaids,” says Gabby, who wanted to thank everyone for coming. Gabby’s mum Megan says she was “blown away” by the day and the support of the community. “Today’s been way bigger than I ever expected, everyone has been so good to us.”

Sunny Xmas day for region Staff Reporter The rain is expected to break in time for Christmas but tomorrow is likely to see some significant weather including wind and rain. A southerly change will bring in clear skies and cooler temperatures for December 25. Metservice says a second low, following the one that began to cross the country on Tuesday has the potential to bring challenging conditions for people travelling between the regions ahead of the

holidays. “Northerly gales for central New Zealand and heavy rain for the western and upper South Island are all highlighted in the Severe Weather Outlook, and it is likely that Severe Weather Watches and Warnings will be issued closer to the event,” said a Metservice statement on Monday. Another weak front does move up the country on Boxing Day, but overall we see an improving trend through the weekend although unsettled conditions return the following week.

Nelson’s jazz and blues performers are banding together for a threeday summer music showcase at The Honest Lawyer. Taking place on January 28, 29 and 30, Honest Summer Jams is a free family-friendly event featuring the very best of the region’s jazz and blues bands even some Latin and gypsy too. Organiser Annabel Boyes says the event takes the place of the usual annual Nelson Jazz Festival, which was cancelled earlier in the year due to Covid-19. “We still wanted to do something and thought it would be nice to have the event between Christmas and New Year’s.” Annabel says they also wanted to celebrate the partnership between the jazz and blues groups in Nelson. “We’re starting to collaborate a bit more, so it seemed fitting to put on a shared event.” There will be three bands playing each day on the Monaco pub’s new outdoor stage from 3pm 6:30pm. Day one will be jazz, day two will be Latin and gypsy and day three

a curiosity in the young reader. The challenge runs from December 11 to February 11, with a celebration party at the library on February 12 with live music and readings. Over 100 kids have signed up to the programme already and entries

will be closing on December 27. The kids will also get a free book funded by the Friends of the Library association and an array of prizes along the way. Last year's programme saw over 350 of them enroll and 150 kids complete the competition.

Your Voice Mayor’s Christmas dinner: As a volunteer for 14 years at the mayor’s Christmas dinner, I can appreciate the disappointment of the elderly and those with carers who attended year after year. Firstly, council removed it from Christmas day to a week earlier, now it has been cancelled this year. Top marks to Murray Leaning, a very community minded person, for putting on a community dinner at Tahuna. However, as it is open to all I am unsure as to how many elderly will actually attend. For 25 years Sandra Maxfield organised and ran the dinner like clockwork. Sadly, when she retired a councillor took over and appeared unable to listen to advice, even from some of the volunteers, and it was doomed to failure. As a long-standing volunteer, along with some others, we now feel it is our turn to buy a ticket and have our dinner served and enjoy the fun day out. I feel there is more than Covid-19 behind its cancellation and hope it will be reinstated next year. Nelson Matters A clever meme in June said let’s put up the Christmas tree now and call it quits on 2020. It has been an extraordinarily year where a virus from China has wreaked unprecedented havoc across the world and disrupted every aspect of Nelson life. Children have had weeks away from school and friends. Teenagers like mine left for University in late February only to be sent home weeks later. Many parents had to cope as essential workers, as well as caring for children. Workers have lost jobs,

hours and income. Our seniors faced isolation from family and friends and the constant threat that the virus would soon threaten their lives. Nelson businesses suddenly lost all their customers. Some went broke with owners losing lifelong investments. Almost every business has taken a hit. I have been impressed by how quickly Nelson businesses have adapted. I am incredibly proud as to how Nelson and Tasman have coped, looked after each other and prevented a single death in our re-

gion. You will struggle to find a community anywhere in the world of 100,000 people, particularly with a large older population, that has come through Covid as well. I particularly want to pay tribute to the hundreds of health professionals in Nelson – doctors, nurses, rest home carers, cleaners, contact tracers – who ensured our 54 local cases did not result in a substantive outbreak. We also owe our thanks to thousands of people like teachers, supermarket workers, truck

drivers in almost every work place who took on extra stress and responsibilities to help get us through. The new outbreak in Sydney and the emergence of a new more virulent strain in the UK in the last week emphasises how critical vaccination is to our future. It is a modern miracle that several successful vaccines have been developed so quickly. We face three major challenges in 2021. I worry we have insufficient workers to harvest Nelson's valuable horticultural crops. We

need the Ministry of Health to do a much more competent job of rolling out the Covid vaccine that it did in 2020 on the flu vaccine. My third concern is the excessive printing of money that is fuelling house price inflation and the scale of Government borrowing. We need a plan to get back to surplus. My best wishes for Christmas. Enjoy family and friends at the many places that make Nelson so special. I am optimistic that 2021 will be much better. Advert.

Nelson council keen to maximise marina's potential Tracy Neal of RNZ Nelson is to revive a plan that incorporates its marina into the city's strategic development. A report commissioned in 2009 is the basis for the Akersten Precinct, aimed at guiding urban growth, design and housing intensification. Nelson's port and marina were built on reclaimed land, which juts out into the Nelson Haven on the city's front doorstep. A summary of the 2009 report noted that Nelson's identity has been forged through its connection to the sea, since initial settlement by Māori and subsequent settlement by the New Zealand Company in the 1840s. Over the years, land just to the north of the city has been reclaimed as the town and the port have grown, with substantial areas of port land created from the 1950s to the 1970s. Akersten Street was one of the last areas to be reclaimed, which involved re-orienting the mouth of the Maitai River, which flowed through the city. The land was owned primarily by the council, Port Nelson and Talley's with smaller blocks in private ownership. There were also a number of recreational and sports clubs on the site, but there were limited public amenities and connection to the central city was considered poor. Development of public spaces and better connections between the city and the marina have occurred since the report was written in 2009. The marina consisted of almost 600 berths, and had facilities for boat haul-outs for maintenance, a refuelling area, swing moorings, and a public boat ramp. Nelson's Mayor Rachel Reese said the council recently established a new committee to focus on development, with the marina considered to be strategically important to this. She said the marina precinct was

critical to the city as a recreational hub, and as an enabler of skilled employment in the marine industry. "If I think about the marine industries in our region they are valuable employers, they provide skilled opportunities for our people." Reese said the marina was primarily a place for boats in a region that placed a lot of emphasis on boating. "We know that for some of our (marine) services there just isn't enough capacity at the moment, so we want to make sure that land at the marina is used both to support the economic opportunities that exist, but also the recreational opportunities." Reese said it was an attractive destination that had generated a lot of interest from people keen to develop other activities, such as in hospitality and in apartment development. "We just really need to see what can fit there, what the priorities are, and the time's right to do that." The city council announced on Thursday it was taking back management of the marina from maintenance firm Nelmac, which was linked to the long-term strategic plan for the marina. Reese said marinas were complex to operate and the last few years had seen a fragmented approach to how Nelson's was run. "We made a decision recently to make sure that all of the marina functions are in one place, inside of council rather than have them contracted out." Handover of the management would happen gradually over the next few months, to be completed by the middle of 2021. Council chief executive Pat Dougherty said it presented a strong opportunity for improving the marina, and realising its full potential for the city's tourism and boating industries.

The Mako became just the second province to defend a national title after going back-to-back in 2020. It is a stunning rags to riches story for the Mako, after being on the brink of extinction just a few years ago. It was a far tougher road to glory this season, after an unbeaten 2019 Tasman dropped three regular season games in 2020. Nelson Netball has landed a major coup in the form of a former Silver Ferns coach and captain. Leigh Gibbs, a gold medalist and world champion, is now set to take the helm of Nelson Netball. Leigh will be the new centre manager for Nelson Netball from early 2021. She has served as assistant coach for the Silver Ferns when the team won a gold medal at both the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships in 2003 and 2006 and a silver medal at the same two competitions in 2002 and 2007. She is a former Silver Ferns captain and vicecaptain and won the World Championships as a player in 1979 and 1987. She also coached the Mainland Tactix from 20122014. Currently working in Brisbane for Netball Queensland, Leigh says the opportunity came up at the right time when she was looking to come home to New Zealand. The new role tempted her because it is a challenge she hadn't yet taken on in her storied career.

Natasha volleys year in US Locally Owned and Operated

Natasha Bannister is yearning to get back on the volleyball court. It has been over a year since she was able to play the game she loves, due to Covid-19. “Our last game was at the beginning of December last year, so I definitely can’t wait to play.” The Nelson volleyballer will spend the holidays in South Carolina as the pandemic runs rampant through The United States. “It is frustrating not being able to go home for Christmas, I am missing New Zealand.” South Carolina has had more than 260,000 cases and almost 5000 deaths due to Covid-19. “It’s pretty bad and freaky to know New Zealand has no cases, it’s pretty scary seeing the news but no one here seems to care, it’s really laid back.” Natasha’s season has also been significantly affected by the virus. “We didn’t have a season this semester, it has been pushed to spring. We have just been trying to train, lifting weights and playing scrimmage games.” She initially moved to Florida on a college scholarship, where she spent her junior college years. Natasha says the humidity took some getting used to, as did the accents.

“The humidity was insane, it was like walking outside into a hot car.” Fellow students would often ask Natasha to repeat herself and would respond with puzzled looks to typical Kiwi colloquialisms such as ‘sweet as’. Following her stint at the University of West Florida, Natasha transferred to Newberry College. “It is a small town, so coming from Tapawera it was very similar, it was a nice change, everyone knows each other.” Sport is a huge part of the culture at Newberry. “Probably 80 per cent of the students are athletes.” Among her achievements are an average of 17 kills in one game, a high of seven aces, and making the all-tournament team at the Bobcat Invitational. She says the quality of volleyball is incredibly high. “It’s a crazy difference, level is insane, so much faster and more intense, but I love it and feel I have improved.” Off the court, Natasha is also making an impact in the classroom. Studying graphic design, Natasha achieved A's across the board for a 4.0 grade point average. Natasha is hoping to finish her college years as an all-American as she chases her dream of playing professionally.

Nelson College flyer Nic Sauria is yet to pledge his sporting allegiance to either Fiji or New Zealand. The fleet-footed outside back made his international debut at the weekend for the Fiji Schools Sevens team at the Condor Sevens in Auckland. Fiji would end up playing in the bowl final, losing to the New Zealand Māori 29-5. The tournament featured the most prodigious talent from across Australasia and the Pacific Islands; Niue, Tonga, Samoa and Cook Islands. “There were definitely some nerves leading in seeing the players we would go up against, it was going to be tough coming up here.” Nic says he was both proud and shocked to hear his name included in the squad and that the sevens training has him in the best condition of his career to date. “There is lots of running and it’s very structured and detailed.” The 17-year-old put himself on the selectors' radar thanks to

force his way into selection. The Nelson College student says the culture in the side has a strong emphasis on brotherhood. “We are one big family, we get along, pray and we sing songs.” Nic and his team has also reaped the benefits of former New Zealand sevens star Amasio

Three years ago, Brendon and Rochelle Mathews first opened The Bike Station in central Nelson and today the vibrant, expanding business has fantastic stock and a passionate, experienced team. Rochelle says contrary to what some may think, Ebikes aren’t a lazy option. “Ours are pedal-electric, so you still have to pedal but you get assistance as

you need it, so they’re suited to anyone, including those with a medical condition. “Using an E-bike allows me to get uphill quickly and ride for longer. They’re great enablers. I can do a

Yohann, who is from the UK, says, “It’s been useful to experience how bike shops operate in other countries, including New Zealand. I picked Nelson because of its awesome mountainbiking trails and The Bike Station had cool brands, a nice workshop and it’s a great place to work.” Meanwhile, two-time national track cycling champion and national record

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base. Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year. “I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.” Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.” Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland. “I started as a customer and ended up working here; I love the team; we all get on well. It’s always a good sign of a great workplace
