Ministry eyes Nayland zoning

The Ministry of Education is looking at controlling growth at Nayland College as the school creeps within 25 students of its maximum capacity. Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson would not disclose his roll numbers to Nelson Weekly, however, in the latest school newsletter, he confirms their total roll for 2020 is 1375. This is approximately 200 more students than last year and includes 345 new year nine students, 70 students from other year levels and 50 new international students. The school can currently accommodate 1400 students, meaning the Ministry of Education is now looking at preliminary options to ensure the school does not exceed capacity. “If any restrictions are to be placed on our enrolment zone the Ministry of Education will have to run a consultation process,” Daniel wrote in the newsletter. He told the Weekly that he was “delighted that the vast majority of students in our local community choose to continue their education at their local high school”.

Nayland’s growth is not isolated, however. Nelson College acting headmaster Tim Tucker says although it’s hard to confirm an exact number in the first few weeks back, the school roll is sitting just under 1100 - which is slightly up on last year. Garin College principal John Maguire is also reporting a roll increase with 524 students, compared to 512 students in 2019. Nelson College for Girl principal Cathy Ewing did not respond to questions about the roll size but said that the school was installing solar cells and refurbishing all its toilet blocks. Property development and staff changes are also afoot at other secondary schools.

upgrading its fire and security systems, and there are several significant modernisation projects planned for the next three years. Nelson’s two intermediate schools are also reporting roll growth. Broadgreen Intermediate principal Pete Mitchener says theirs continues to grow and is currently at 574 students. Five classrooms are being developed along with outdoor teaching spaces. Nelson Intermediate principal Diane Webb says their roll is currently sitting at just under 500 students - up on last year’s 440 students. She says this year will see the construction of a new playground and outdoor area space, and the upgrade and relocation of their Māori medium classroom.

Pigeon Valley fire: One year on Locally Owned and Operated

The bush fire that raged across Pigeon Valley and the Tasman region in February 2019 was one of the largest blazes in New Zealand’s modern history. At its height, the fire covered 2300 hectares and nearly 2500 residents evacuate their homes. Matt McCrorie takes a look, one year on. It was a hot, dry, cloudless day on February 5, 2019. There hadn’t been rain in weeks in the Nelson region, and temperatures were soaring above record levels. On that Tuesday it was 28 degrees. A tractor was discing a tinderdry, stony paddock of tall grass, with warm conditions, wind and extreme fire danger. It was the perfect storm, and one spark was all it took to ignite the paddock. Strong winds meant that the fire spread rapidly, and within weeks it had ripped through 2300 hectares, destroyed a home, fences, pastures and cause 2500 to evacuate their homes. It was the largest wildfire in New Zealand in nearly 70 years. At 2.16pm Wakefield volunteer fire brigade were alerted to the blaze, with fire trucks arriving within 10 minutes. Despite only taking half an hour for a chopper to arrive, the fire was out of control. Within two hours it had travelled nearly 7km. By 6.30pm that night, nearby residents were already being

In the coming days, a total of 61 chopper units from around the country turned up to join the firefighting effort. A Civil Defence State of Emergency was declared on February 6, the day after the Pigeon Valley fire started. The fire burned for three weeks, ripping through thousands of hectares of land in Pigeon Valley and forced thousands of residents to evacuate. Tasman Mayor Tim King says the fire was a hugely challenging time for the region, especially for those who were evacuated from their homes.
“A fire on this scale, on top of the drought conditions at the time could have felt overwhelming but my lasting memory was the huge response from our community. It was an incredible effort all round and it made me feel proud of the place that I live and the people I share it with.” The fire spread over 2316 hectares, spanning 36.4km, an even greater area than 2017’s Port Hills fires in Christchurch. After 22 days the Civil Defence State of Emergency was lifted on February 27, and the region moved into a transition phase from response to recovery.

Taking the fight to wet-wipes Staff Reporter A Nelson supermarket appears to have become the first in the country to warn customers of the environmental hazards of wetwipes. FreshChoice Nelson has erected in-store signage featuring an image of a blocked pipe and the message ‘Wipes clog pipes – Save the planet – Please don’t flush ‘em.’
Worldwide wet-wipes have become an environmental headache causing fatbergs - masses of fat and solid waste - that block sewer systems. The blockages are expensive to fix and can lead to overflows onto land and into waterways. FreshChoice Nelson coowner Mark A’Court says the supermarket wanted to increase people’s awareness of the impact wipes can have when flushed.
NEWS Fire risk closes reserves: The Nelson City Council has closed more reserves due to increasing fire risk after a continued spell of hot and dry weather. Matt says. “It’s true that a handful of manufacturers do include visible warnings on their packaging but many have none at all or, if they do, the warning is hidden under the packet where no one will see it,” Matt says. It‘s been such a long journey from the start on the novel to now, that the story moved out into the wider world and won an Oscar moves me immensely.”

Nelson had one of the strongest increases in the number of million dollar properties sold in the last year, according to REINZ. Nelson had an increase of more than 21 per cent – from 51 to 62 properties.

Aspiring GirlGuides are sitting on waiting lists in Nelson, as the organisation struggles to recruit new leaders. There are already 100 girls in local units and more waiting to join, according to GirlGuide New Zealand spokesperson, Mariana Jacinto. “At this stage, these very full units are supported by parent help but realistically we need reliable, consistent support from official volunteer leaders.” Mariana says they receive ongoing enquiries for girls wanting to join GirlGuides
in Nelson, but they peak particularly at the beginning of each year. “We have girls that are missing out, so we need all the volunteers we can get.” Stoke mum Kelly Nicholls has been a leader in Nelson since 2013 and is urging others to give it a go. “We really need more leaders. Guides in Nelson has been shrinking, but we’re steadily building and the more leaders we have, the more we can share the load.” She says you don’t need to be a teacher or an expert at anything. “It’s great to watch these girls blossom, challenge themselves and achieve their goals, especially the shy ones.”
Mariana says other benefits of being a leader include growing the skills employers want to see on CVs, making friends and connecting with your local community. Women and men from 18-years-old can sign up to lead groups, starting at Pippins at five-years-old right up to Rangers at 17-years-old. All training is provided and usually it requires two to four hours per week during school terms. “Any new volunteers that come on board will be directly responsible for getting these girls off the sideline and into the fun,” says Mariana. “We don’t want to ask them to wait.”

Chance for ‘tourism with soul’ Charles Anderson
Sheelagh McCambridge never thought she might be the sort of person to jump at an opportunity to travel to a third world country to help build homes. But when she read a story in the Nelson Weekly two years ago, all that changed. The article was about Habitat for Humanity and the work they did in building homes for less fortunate people. “I’m a late bloomer to travel,” says
Sheelagh. “But when I saw the newspaper I thought, ‘that’s it’.” She travelled to Cambodia for a week with a group of other likeminded people – all bent on helping locals into homes. “I got far more out of it than I could give,” Sheelagh says. “It taught me about myself and how I view the world.” When she returned to Nelson, she started tutoring former refugees, and jumped at another chance to go to Fiji with Habitat for Humanity.
“I’m a 50-year-old woman on my own. I knew travelling would be safe and I have an ethical sense of travel, so it ticked all those boxes.” Now she is organising a tour with the organisation – this time to Myanmar in October. “Someone told me that it’s like tourism with soul,” Sheelagh says. “It’s a way I can do something for people in their country while also seeing and learning more about their culture.” She is looking for people to join her
to travel to Bago region and help build homes. “The build work is done at your own pace and ability. We have everyone from 15 to 83-year-olds.” She says locals are so appreciative of the help. “Once they learn what you are doing, they welcome you with open arms.” Anyone who is interested can contact Sheelagh on smmcc@xtra.co.nz.

Top Australian stunt rider coming to town Matt McCrorie A top Australian stunt rider is coming to Nelson this Sunday. Dave McKeena is attending the Nelson Ride Forever Shiny Side Up Bikefest at Saxton Stadium on February 16 from 10am to 4pm. Dave has brought his Yamaha MT09 SP from Australia for the event and will be showcasing various manoeuvres and antics. The event is supported by Filco Farm and Sport and its operations manager Perry Francis says Dave is a full-time stunt rider and will be a thrill to watch. “He’s been voted top Aussie stunt person several times… don’t miss this guy, he is absolutely amazing.” The event is one of two that Filco

The charity motorcycle event is open to all motorcyclists to help raise money and awareness of animal abuse and animal welfare issues. The ride is on Sunday, March 1 with riders able to register at Filco from 10am. The cost is $20 per bike with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Paw Justice. Hospice gets $26,000 funds boost Staff Reporter The Nelson Tasman Hospice is more than $26,000 better off after the support of local Farmers stores. The amount was part of a larger $759,000 windfall for hospices around the country. The funds were raised toward the end of last year as part of the purchase of 15,000 of the hand-painted collectable baubles “Ngaru” by Spencer Bellas. “Farmers have recognised that their staff and customers really want to support people in their own communities living with a life-limiting condition. Because of this focus, people know their donations stay local and will mean their community’s hospice is there free of charge for anyone who needs support,” says Mary Schumacher, CEO, Hospice NZ. Frans Dellebeke, CEO of Nelson Tasman Hospice, says the the donation of $26,298.72 will enable Nelson Tasman Hospice to continue providing specialised palliative care free of charge to patients across the region, and support to their families. “Not only did the team at Farmers, embrace raising funds for our hospice, they also worked as ambassadors for our services, helping the community to better understand the work we do. The awareness raising that comes from being involved with Farmers is invaluable. The enthusiasm and commitment from all staff and the people of Nelson and Tasman have contributed to this amazing result, thank you so much.” Chief Financial Officer of Farmers Michael Power, says he is proud of the amount raised during its Christmas hospice campaign “through a combined effort and generous donations made by our customers, our staff, and our business”. Mary says the organisation can’t thank the Farmers team and their customers enough for their generosity towards hospice. “To once again raise more than three quarters of a million dollars is incredible. I witnessed firsthand the depth of engagement between hospice and the Farmers team, they are working so hard to raise not only funds, but also awareness of the work we do.”

Your Voice Rental landscape leaves tenants ‘powerless’ I think the problem could also be that landlords have been burnt one too many times by terrible tenants and would rather not go through the stress, therefore less houses available. The government needs to step in and build more houses for the renting population or make it harder for that small sector of society to trash houses and get away with it. A blacklist of bad tenants would be a good start. I hope this family finds some much-needed stability. Very unfair. Many landlords simply can’t afford to meet the criteria or deal with bad tenants - it’s easier just to sell. The sad reality is, that in trying to upgrade rental condi-

There has been a huge shortfall in new builds. Not surprising as new houses are very expensive and difficult to create. NZ has had huge migration increases in the last decade and a rapid expansion of tourism. The raising of housing standards, while well intentioned, has been too hasty and poorly managed and has taken some properties out of rental circulation, which has not helped. annuation plan which will provide for us in our retirement. So, we are happy to invest into a property with this long-term goal. To anyone who believes landlords are greedy, I would be happy to outline the actual cost of having a rental property. Government should reduce regulations so people can build at affordable levels without such outrageous costs for compliance, health and safety, and council fees. Nelson Matters Climate change was the focus of my annual speech to Rotary this year. It is a complex subject with Nelsonians having strongly polarised views. I have been heavily engaged in the issue since attending the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 as a new MP when New Zealand signed the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and since as Conservation, Environment and Climate Change Minister. An analysis by the media in December noted I had spoken on the subject in Parliament more than any other MP. Climate change is a serious problem but I am not in the apocalypse camp. We have future risks from nuclear war, disease pan-
demics, major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. We need to manage each, including climate change, as prudently as possible, based on the science. I get why young people are protesting. The world committed to stabilising annual greenhouse gas emissions at 30 billion tonnes back in 1992 but they have grown 60% to 50 billion tonnes. NZ’s emissions grew 13% under the Bolger/Shipley years (1990-99) and another 10% under Clark (1999-2008). The Key/English Government did better (2008-2017), reducing emissions slightly by 0.03% despite the population growing 15% and the economy 25%. This was achieved by policies like
insulating 500,000 homes, implementing the ETS, restricting dairy growth, growing renewable energy generation, incentives for electric cars and improving public transport. It is worrying that NZ’s emissions are rising again. They dropped 24,000 tonne/year in the last Parliament (2014-2017) but the latest Ministry Report projects they will rise by 48,000 tonnes per year during this parliamentary term (2017-2020). The new Government claimed emissions would fall to 79.9 million tonnes this year but now say they would be 80.9 million tonnes, ie a million tonnes worse. New Zealand needs to do our fair share globally on climate

Nelson’s comedy king is coming home. Guy Williams will perform in Nelson for the first time in three years when he takes to the stage on Valentine’s Day. Guy is best known for appearing on the Jono and Ben Show and will realise a childhood dream on Friday night. “It’s my first time doing the legendary Theatre Royal.” This has been a goal of Guy’s after growing up watching his younger sister and brother do youth theatre there. In between the laughs, Guy says he is relishing the chance to come back home. “This show is secretly also a chance to have a holiday in Nelson and catch up with family.” However, they may not be in the audience come show time. “My family, especially my parents, really hate my shows.” Much to his parents delight, Guy is also bringing his siblings on stage. “Hopefully, my younger sister Maria will be an opening act and I’m trying to talk my younger brother into doing it, too.” Guy says he hopes to put on a political show that “doesn’t suck”. “I know that sounds impossible and I can’t promise that I will achieve this amazing goal, but I’ll give it a good shake because we’ve all got to do something to fill in the time before we die.” The show, which starts at 8pm, is ‘pay what you want’ – from $10 to $40.

Local businessman Chris Nielsen has demonstrated what’s possible in a short space of time in Nelson. “We started All Stainless Ltd two and a half years ago and we’ve gone from nothing to where we are today,” says Chris. “Recently we moved to a much larger premises and, later on this year, we’re bringing in more equipment including some awesome laser technology.” The new building is modern and spacious. The New Zealand-born fabrication engineer completed his
training in Denmark. “I did three different trades – stainless steel metal, automation, and heating and cooling, before returning to New Zealand in 2005.” Chris initially had a job at the port then bought into a local business before setting up All Stainless Ltd in January 2017. “We had a lease on Bolt Road for several years, but when we moved in, we were pretty choc-a-bloc; there were lots of sharp corners to avoid and I managed to rip three new shirts in a row! So now that we have a much bigger space, it’s really
great and we can take on larger projects.” The All Stainless team opened the doors to its brandnew premises nearly two weeks ago. The modern, spacious building on Venice Place, which was built by Contour Building, has a 9-metre high ceiling, two large workshops and smart new offices. “The workshops will be heated in the winter and solar-powered with 10 kilowatts of power – the lighting takes about 6 and a half, so with just the computers going, it’s pretty much free. Chris says their previous place was quite busy with lots of vehicles coming and going and bringing dust in, but in their new location, it’s noticeably quieter, with good access and carparks for the staff. “I think we can grow here.”

prep, make all the drawings and programme a press and the guillotine, then the sheet comes out, they fold it up, then glue it, etc. “With stainless you have to be really accurate – there’s two different types of sheet metal workers, there’s stainless and mild steel - if that gets bunged up you can paint over it, but with stainless steel, if you make a mistake, it’s pretty much scrap because it shows everything.” Kiley, Dan, John, Anita and owner Chris are very pleased to have relocated to a spacious new, modern premises on Venice Place. to the delivery of the finished product. Chris says no two days are the same. “The boys never know what they’re getting into. It can be flashings, benchtops, handrails, tanks, pipework - anything that’s made of stainless steel or aluminium.”

new clients, especially now that they have a new workshop where they can ‘actually move around!” “We’ve worked with some big names in the food industry, manufacturing everything from benchtops to rangehoods for a lot of local restaurants; we’ve worked with businesses like Hopgoods, Burger Culture, The Boatshed Café and numerous large companies like King Salmon.” No matter how small or big the job is, the team always takes care of their customers, whether it’s a 200-hundred-dollar job or a 2000-dollar project. “We do 90 percent of the work onsite and we also transport, deliver and install.” Chris says people can tell them how they want their benchtop to look; they go out and do all the

“We’ve got laser cutting coming later this year which is exciting. If we’re making a signature bench and double sink, normally it will take around two and a half hours to put out using a grinder, but the laser takes less than 30 seconds; it cuts all the way around, cuts the corners and the hole and it’s still flat, but when we cut it with a grinder can get a bit distorted so we often have to straighten it. We do box, pipe and sheet laser cutting so we can engrave and cut our things very accurately. If you’re making a balustrade and you need to scallop out a tube, normally you’d cut it out and file it, but laser does the whole lot.”
All Stainless Ltd use the latest equipment for aluminium and stainless steel fabrication including this 3.7mm CNC press brake for folding, with laser cutting coming soon. The team at All Stainless are ‘very efficient’ and the jobs come in and go out pretty fast. “Between John and I there’s about 60-70 years’ experience. Dan has just finished off his apprenticeship and Kiley has been training with us for a while. Anita has just left us to take up a new position, so Kaylie is coming onboard as our new front office staff member. We are also looking to hire more people, but the work does require some pretty good skills, like knowing your geometry because you have to be able to measure, etc.”

Chris says moving to the new
location feels like a fresh start for All Stainless. “When you’ve got 300 square metres you wonder how you can fill it up, then a year later you’ve got 1200 square metres and you start from scratch again. Artist Cathy Jones opened her exhibition ‘A Clean Sweep’ at the McKee Gallery in the Suter this week. Art and botany are twin interests in Cathy’s life. She has worked for DOC as a threatened plant botanist and still carries out contract work in her retirement. A particular botanical interest is in native brooms and finely-detailed broom flowers are a feature in this exhibition. However, the connection with reality ends there, as
her imagination takes flight, linking the botanical broom with the housekeeping variety - sweeping out old ideas and habits. Cathy comes from a family of artists that spans six generations, from her grandfather, an architect who also painted, and her father, who retired at 60 and spent the next 30 years of his life painting, through her daughter and granddaughters to her great granddaughters. Although she’s painted all her life, it wasn’t until her retirement from full time work
that Cathy was able to take stock of her art and her life, enrolling in an advanced diploma course with The Learning Connexion in Wellington. Since the two-year, part time course, Cathy has spent another two years resolving the issues it raised and now feels ready to explore new directions with her art. “I feel as if I’m healthier in mind and body than I have been for a long time.” Among the issues she’s sorted through is the notion that people shouldn’t be so obsessed by housework, so the clean sweep she has in
mind doesn’t quite extend to the physical. Cathy suggests that in looking at her paintings, viewers need to look for the various meanings and messages, as her semi-abstract figures wrestle with housework at the same time as they grapple with the issues in their minds. The paintings keep a hold on reality with the tiny little New Zealand broom flowers that are sprinkled through the works in the exhibition. A Clean Sweep, by Cathy Jones, continues at the McKee Gallery in the Suter until Sunday, February 23.

College rowers lead the way at South Island Champs Staff Reporter The next generation of Nelson rowers flexed their muscles at the recent South Island Club Champs -bringing home a slew of medals as they set their sights on one of the country’s most coveted prizes. It was the Nelson College rowers making a statement on the water, claiming gold in the U16 double sculls and intermediate quad. The Nelson Rowing Club were regulars on the podium at Lake Ruataniwha, claiming a total haul of three gold, five silver and three bronze. Comprised of 34 college rowers, seven club rowers (rowers under 27 who have left school) and three Masters rowers (27 years and over),the club also made another 12 A Finals and 8 B Finals. Mercer and Stace also rowed with Rico Fraser, Ollie Ransom and Hennessy to take the silver in the Boys U/17 Coxed Squad Sculls. “Our master rowers were not to be outdone by their younger counterparts by adding three silvers and one bronze to the tally.”
Elsewhere, Eva Lloyd and Macy Kappely joined forces with rowers from Wairau Rowing Club to win gold in the Women’s Club Quad Sculls. Fiona says the club’s college rowers will now enter an intense training phase. “This will be in preparation for the South Island Secondary Schools regatta in March where they will compete for their respective schools and the pinnacle event, New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships, better known as Maadi Cup in April.”

Sophie’s grasps ‘aloha’ moment Locally Owned and Operated

When Sophie Manson was a child she was always jumping on and flipping off things, so a family friend suggested she try gymnastics. “It was probably the safest option,” she jokes. What began as a way to harness her energy has turned into a potential path to the Olympic Games. Fast forward 11 years and the young gymnast is competing with some of the best in the world. Sophie recently returned from Hawaii where she took part in two consecutive competitions, ‘Gymnastics in Paradise’ and ‘Aloha Gymfest’. She was part of a team of 14 Kiwis who qualified for the team, following nationals in October. Unaware of her selection, a friend messaged her the link to the team. “It was really exciting because I had no clue.”

Mako make history in America Locally Owned and Operated
“It was a bit different because I’m usually one of the quiet ones, but I definitely enjoyed it and was more comfortable in the end.” It wasn’t all business for the Mako on tour, though, as they got to enjoy a live NBA game as the Houston Rockets took on the Oklahoma City Thunder. “That was definitely a highlight.” Jamie says some of the boys might be bringing back a few extra kilograms after indulging in the local cuisine. “We enjoyed eating some good Texan steaks.” He says the reception they got from locals was surprising. “I couldn’t believe how much they got into it. People would see us and ask us who we were and what we’re doing. Rugby is quite popular in Seattle so fans were excited to see a team from New Zealand.” He says he would be the first to put his hand up for future tours. “It was such a good experience, the coaches were awesome, and the teams hosted us really well. I would love to do it again.”

After proving itself as the country’s premier provincial side, the Tasman Mako has had a taste of international competition in the United States. The Mitre 10 Cup champions recently embarked on a two-week tour to Houston and Seattle for two exhibition games. With the majority of the Mako squad on Super Rugby duty, it was the perfect chance to blood some wider squad members Vice-captain Jamie Spowart was given a leadership role which he relished after limited game time in 2019. “It was a really good opportunity for me to step up,” the young speedster says. The Mako first met the Houston SabreCats at Aveva Stadium in Texas. Tries to Spowart, Sam Matenga, Caleb Coventry, Sam Briggs ensured a hard-fought 29-19 victory. “It was the first time for some of

Alec Swan dominated the Haulashore Circuit, race three of the Clements Endurance Swim Series on Sunday, setting a new record of 32min 19sec for the 2.8km course. Timed to minimise the current, the race started 30 minutes before high water, so swimmers faced the last vestiges of the incoming tide as they swam from the yacht club to the “dolphin” navigation marker and out through The Cut. It was slack water as the field rounded the south end of the island, only to face the outgoing tide as they made their way north to the dolphin and back to the yacht club. In the tenth year of the race, Alec cracked Hayden Squance’s 2017 record and the perfect conditions opened the door for Oxford Bayley and Fergus Drummond to also dip under the record. Terry Bone broke the teen stranglehold to take fourth place, ahead of Sierra Thomas, who broke Pip Dwyer’s 2015 women’s record.

Next was three-time winner Matt Hansen and last year’s women’s winner Christina Harris, who is in good shape as she prepares for her 23km swim from Australia’s west coast through shark-invested waters to Rottnest Island. Back in the field, last year’s winner Ben Marshall chose to swim without a wetsuit. He was challenged all the way by 59-year-old Christchurch swimmer Peter Johnson, also swimming without a wetsuit,
the pair finishing eleventh and twelfth. Only a second separated the pair at the finish. In an upset in the senior ranks, 78-year-old Derek Eaton turned the tables on a younger Stuart Hebberd, who turned 72 earlier in the week, the pair finishing 23rd and 26th in the field of 67 swimmers. Several swimmers achieved the goal of circumnavigating the island, an aspirational achievement for Erin O’Connor, Fiona Young, Paula Meer and Kevin Edgar. Twelve swimmers took on the short swim of about 900m to the dolphin and return. In an allwomen podium, Lauren Penney won from Nicole Le Bas Thurlow, Lisa Stanley, Jenni Phillips and Kay Stansbury-Ward. The final swim in the Clements series is the 3.8km Ironman Challenge from Tahuna Beach on March 1, a week out from the national Interislander Big Tahuna on March 7. the fish that were born in the Bay used to stay around this area and grew up here. There was not much stock coming from outside the SNA7 area. Therefore the fish born in 2007 are now the ones we are catching today in good numbers and sizes. A new development that is happening right now is that snapper started to move south from the north islands west coast. This area holds the largest snapper biomass in NZ waters. Catches are reported as far south as Jacksons Bay and Dunedin. This is most likely related to climate change and warmer water temperatures. Despite the increase in recreational fishing in Tasman Bay and a possible upcoming increase in commercial quota the outlook for our local snapper is positive with stocks predicted to improve further over the next 5 years. In our last column (issue of 29/1/20) we looked back to the beginnings of the commercial fishing in Nelson and the impact it had on the local snapper during the 20th century. Tasman Bay always has been an important spawning ground for snapper. In spring the fish move into the shallow water for this event and then hang around until autumn. Spawning success is very dependent on outside influences like water temperature, currents, available food and more. Even if you have a lot of fish spawning this doesn’t mean that it will result in a high recruitment rate. Today a lot of research and science goes into monitoring the fisheries. During the 1980s and 90s recruitment was relatively low on average, this started to improve in the early 2000s with good recruitment years in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2010. 2007 was an exceptional recruitment year. Nelson College had a simple challenge on Saturday in the final round of the TPL club cricket competition - win with a bonus point, or title aspirations were over. So, they did just that to set up a return clash with ACOB on Saturday 23 February with the winner challenging Car Company Stoke Nayland on the ? in the final.? Sunday Mason Lund scored a responsible and overdue half century to anchor the innings for Nelson College against ACOB at Saxton Oval. Patrick Wilson and Flynn Day both played support roles to Lund on what turned out to be a slow and low deck. In the run chase, ACOB faltered right from the get-go. Big Jarrod Mckay was dangerous and new ball partner, Ronan Restieaux, also constantly asked questions of all the batsmen. There were no meaningful partnerships and the best batting came towards the tail from the
old stager Reuben Smith. Finn Raxworthy chimed in with a couple of cheap wickets as the Nelson College boys never took their foot off the throat of big brother. At the other end of the table, a timely victory by Wanderers/ Motueka cemented their late season resurgence and moved them off the foot of the table. Batting first, WTTU were dismissed for a below par total ?of 136 in just the 35th over against Wanderers/Motueka at Jubilee Park. Skipper Sam Baxendine was top scorer for WTTU and was undefeated when the innings terminated. With Dean Hawley, Baxendine added 61 for the sixth wicket, but there were no other partnerships of any real substance. There were plenty of nervous moments in the Wanderers/ Motueka reply. At 91/2 it seemed all done and dusted. The youthful Boe Bamford and the experienced Dave Leonard appeared to have everything under control.
Josh Newport though had other ideas and the right arm opening bowler begun to cut a swathe through the visitors batting. He removed both Bamford and Leonard in a lethal spell which ended up netting him a well deserved five wicket bag. At 130/7 it was anyone’s game, but the batsmen held their nerve. WTTU ended up using eight bowlers and the 28 wides they conceded were instrumental in the combined team being able to squeak home in the 38th over. Loving wife to Pete, a treasured mum and mother-in-law of Sandra & Hugh, Lynette & Paul, Bruce & Leanne and her 4 grandchildren. A private family service has been held as per Shirley’s wishes. A remembrance celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at the Nelson Golf Club, Tahunanui, on Saturday, February 22, between 2-4pm. We are forever grateful for the gift of you.
