‘I feel my death is a special circumstance’ Charles Anderson Craig Gray says he feels like he has been set adrift in a life raft and left to fend for himself. After battling a rare blood cancer for almost five years, the Stoke resident has been forced to source life extending drugs from Bangladesh, at a cost of $1100 a month. This is because Pharmac, the crown entity that decides which medicines are subsidised, does not fund the drug. “They say my death isn’t a special circumstance,” Craig says. “But I feel my death is a special circumstance. For my family and for my kids it is.” But despite the outlook and financial stress for Craig, who once

was told he had only two weeks to live, he says he is the happiest he has ever been. “It’s bizarre. I’ve just let go. Not being in control of anything is the best way to be. All I can control is myself.” It all started in July 2015 when he was working 60 hours a week as the head chef of a local café. Then he separated from his wife and then was made redundant. He thought it was just stress – but Craig found himself forgetting things. He ran red lights. He would say the same thing over and over. He eventually went to the doctor with what he thought was a chest infection.

‘I feel my death is a special circumstance’ FROM PAGE 1 When his blood tests finally came back the results were not good. He had stage four mantle cell lymphoma. He was 42-years-old. “Just that word ‘cancer’. When you face it, it’s a massive kick in the guts.” He had funded treatment – chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant. After several bouts and enduring the painful treatment that would see his immune system stripped, Craig had some good news. He was cancer-free. He went back to work, put on weight and went back to the gym. Then last July, 18 months after being declared cancer-free, he relapsed. The cancer was back. But this time the chemo put him in hospital. “The doctor said ‘we can’t give you anymore – it’s going to kill

you or make you sicker than you should be’.” The only option, she said, was a drug called imbruvica, but it wasn’t funded. Craig would have to pay for it himself and she could not tell him where to get it. So, he went online and found a Twitter account from Bangladesh. He pays for them online and then the tablets come several weeks later. It was a leap of faith. “It felt very bizarre. Were these pills filled with sand or chalk? I had no idea.” All he knew is that, to start with, they worked. His condition stabilised. Then they stopped working. His doctor said he had two weeks to live, a month at the most. “I was by myself. You think ‘oh, my god, is that it’? You look around and people are living their normal lives. And you are thinking, two weeks?”

Initially, he didn’t tell anyone. He just sat and reflected on his life. But then as he revealed his outlook, he found himself talking to family and friends about things he never would have. Old wounds were healed, and new clarity was found. Then two weeks stretched into three and past a month. He called his doctor and said he was still alive. She told him to keep taking the pill. It doesn’t cure it but just keeps it at bay. But after paying for rent and his medication, Craig is left with $18 in his account. He is helped by his children but has had to get over his pride and ask for help. “Growing up with that older generation, it is very hard. It’s a grind.” He says he is plagued by the question of when the financial hardship might become too

much so that he stops taking the drug. Despite the uncertainty he has found a new appreciation of life. He loves listening to the birds outside his window in the morning and at night. He will find himself shedding a tear watching a young family laugh at the beach. “That is what it’s about. It’s not the merry-go-round of life we should care about. We forget about the little things.” He wants people to know that the Government might not always be there to help. But he is also happy. “I have two beautiful children. I’ve cooked for two prime ministers. I’ve had some good times and bad times. I’ve made people laugh and cry. Hopefully laugh more than cry. They are also committing to a range of actions to help address our region’s talent challenge, including supporting the NRDA to better promote the opportunities that exist here. “We also want to share more widely how some businesses have used innovative solutions to address this challenge, and a recent example is Pic’s Peanut Butter and Sea Dragon jobsharing a senior position so they could utilise these critical skills without having to commit to a full salary each.” In addition, NTIN has already kicked off several in-region initiatives, such as summer intern and grad-share programmes to create young ambassadors, as well as events to welcome new people to the region. Mark says it’s all about telling a “better story” of our region. “It’s a call to action for the whole region to collaborate and get the message out there that we’re doing some really cool, innovative things.”

Almost all businesses have one vacant position, and more than half have two of more positions they’re trying to fill. Some of the most difficult roles to fill are mid-to-senior technical roles and senior executives. Chief executive of the Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA), Mark Rawson, says there are several contributing factors, including Nelson’s renowned “sunshine wages”. “While we’ve got a great lifestyle, we can’t live off it,” he says. The research reveals salaries on offer in Nelson can be 10 - 50 percent lower than the same job in a bigger centre, however 70 per cent of employers says they are doing all they can to increase pay rates. Mark says, although job retention is not such an issue, people are worried about making the big move, with the perception of limited career opportunities. “And, in many cases, we’re not just employing for one. There is also the challenge of finding a role for their spouse/partner.” However, one Nelson business owner, Chris Rodley of SnapIT, believes the biggest issue is housing. “We’ve tripled our staff this year, we’ve had no problem attracting them - the issue is housing them. We had one guy who couldn’t start for two months as he couldn’t find a

He ended up in a onebedroom place for $450 per week. It’s the only thing that’s stubbing growth.” Chair of NTIN Dave Thompson says all these factors are freezing the potential of businesses. “Employers are telling us that not being able to find the right people means they have to be cautious about growth, have less time to be innovative, and feel as though they are constantly recruiting.” And, with around 60 per cent of employers believing it’s going to get harder to recruit the talent they need in the future, Dave says we need to work together to address the obstacles.

Black eye from a Black Cap Jonty Dine After attending his first-ever cricket match, James McMullen managed to take home a special souvenir. The eight-year-old is sporting an impressive shiner after taking a ball to the face at about 140kmh. It was the 19th over at Saxton Oval when Black Cap Mitchell Santner cracked one out of the middle down to the fine leg boundary. It took just one bounce off the barrier before heading towards the crowd. James saw the Kookaburra ball hurtling towards him but had little time to react before it caught him flush in the face. The crowd gasped in horror as the impact saw James hit the deck immediately. His eye blew up in front of the horrified onlookers, including his mum Sarah McMullen and stepdad Steve Hussey. Steve says he heard the ball hit, turned around and saw it coming, but “there was no chance of getting across”. “They thought he was a goner,” says Sarah. Steve picked James up and took him straight to the nearby ambulance. “He was given a checkup, ensuring there were no signs of concussion or any broken bones,” says Steve. After getting the all clear the little trooper returned to watch the rest of the game, more upset about the fact he had dropped his muffin during the accident. “It was chocolate,” the Nayland Primary student lamented. The players requested to meet James and,

Sex workers deported: Immigration New Zealand (INZ) says three migrants on temporary visas have been caught unlawfully working in the sex industry in the Top of the South and been deported. Two others are being dealt with by Immigration and the police. INZ says, since September, five individuals from China, Brazil and Hong Kong had been found working unlawfully as sex workers in Nelson and Blenheim. Under the Prostitution Reform Act, foreign nationals on temporary visas are unable to work in the sex industry.

James jokingly told him, “out of 5000 people you hit me”. As well as a great story to tell all his friends, James was given the match ball and a signed hat from the English team. Santner scrawled on the ball - ‘Sorry mate, only one I hit out of the middle all day.” The players told Santner he should sign

James’ face too, to which Sarah replied, “he already has”. The incident has seen James become a bit of a celebrity at school, with kids he doesn’t even know, asking what happened. Mother Sarah says if it had to happen to someone, it could’ve been worse with someone less pragmatic. “He’s got a pretty strong skull and just takes things in his stride.” Despite the fame, James says it was the worst pain he has ever felt. “It was definitely not worth it.”

Marine education centre site: The trust aiming to build a maritime education centre in Nelson has found its preferred site, near the Nelson waterfront. The concept for the estimated $20 million Te Matau Marine Education Centre was announced a year ago but has been delayed by difficulties in finding the right location. A Nelson-based maritime law specialist said the trust set up to deliver the project has now secured the option on a site at Kinzett Terrace at the northern end of the city’s main street. Peter Dawson, who has been the project’s key driver, said the large site at the end of Trafalgar Street fronted on to the tidal Nelson Haven, and was a perfect anchor point for the planned education and tourism centre.

White Violence is not just physical Ribbon Ride comes to Nelson Kate Russell The White Ribbon Ride will roar into central Nelson this weekend to raise awareness of domestic violence. The weeklong motorbike ride happens every November and this year, with the help of the Nelson and Richmond Soroptimists, they are holding an event at 1903 Square this Saturday, 16 November, at 10.30am. Ride captain Ken Mahon says White Ribbon it’s one of the most exciting initiatives tackling this country’s crippling domestic violence record and he is encouraging people to come along and support the event. “The big thing is getting people there, talking about it and getting it out in the open. We hope by talking about, people will stand up and do something about it,” he says. “It’s about creating public awareness.” Ken describes it as a “powerful and inspirational voyage” for all involved. “Last year we had around 50 bikes, so we’re hoping for the same number this year - if not more.”

Domestic violence comes in all forms. As part of White Ribbon month, Leanne Fletcher tells her story about escaping and understanding her own emotionally abusive relationship.

I met him in high school. I was young and inexperienced. It was my first relationship. At that age you don’t know what a relationship is supposed to look like. To start with, he was nice and funny and normal. I didn’t expect it to turn into what it turned into. But then three months into our relationship, he was kicked out of home and I followed him to Christchurch. We were isolated, away from anyone we really knew. It started with comments. He put me down for certain things, telling me that this was the best I was going to get. I didn’t know what a good relationship looked like. I thought ‘I love this person and he loves me, so this is what I have to put up with to have that’. He used to get really angry. He often smoked marijuana to calm himself. If he didn’t have it, his anger would be worse and taken out on me. This would include yelling and swearing at me, telling me I was worthless. When I was about to turn 18, I took a break from him. I thought ‘maybe there is more out there for me, I don’t have to stay with him’. But then, now I can’t remember why, I got back together with him. Six months later I was pregnant. Then I felt stuck. But it only got worse after I had the baby. He started making fun of me in front of my friends and putting me down and

joking about my weight. Once he called me an elephant in front of my friends and they were really uncomfortable with that. One friend took me out and asked me if I was ok. That was the first person who asked that. It was all behind closed doors, so no one knew. I saw that I was becoming more and more of a shell. I was really sad all the time. It was weird, it was like I loved him, but I didn’t like him. It’s hard to explain. You know that it’s not ok but it’s so hard to break that attachment. Then if you break up someone will be disappointed because they don’t know what’s going on. And there was also a baby. Then he started doing other things, like instead of punching me he would punch the wall beside me. I don’t remember panicking. I just froze. After something like that would happen, we would be in different rooms and he would be on the couch crying about how bad he felt about it. I would feel guilt about it and think maybe it was my fault. It was really complex feelings. The little putdown comments were every day. Especially if I hadn’t done the dishes or dinner wasn’t ready because I was busy with the baby. The bigger outbursts weren’t as often, but they were emotionally and mentally draining. But this was my normal.

Then, just after his 21st birthday, and my son was just over one, I needed to leave the house for a few minutes, but he got really angry because I wanted to leave without our son. He got angry over the smallest things. Then I was like ‘that’s not ok’. I said, ‘I want you to move out’. It’s hard. My son is 13 now and I can see some tendencies in him that are in his dad. Some of the anger and language. But both of us have had help from Stopping Violence Services. It has helped me make sense of the trauma, but that still continues. The negative psychological effects are ongoing, and they will be for many years. I just hope my story helps others in this situation to get help before I did. Five years is a long time. Trailblazing firefighters recognised for long service Jonty Dine Reporter

They were the first women to join their station and, 25 years later, firewomen Grace and Bella Clarke have been recognised for their selfless service to the region. From fires to floods and fatal accidents, the sisters-in-law have had countless Christmas dinners, birthdays and nights’ sleep interrupted with a callout. The women have served as firefighters, secretary treasurer, peer support, canteen manager and, most recently, in risk reduction at the Appleby Fire Station. After a quarter century as volunteers, Grace and Bella were celebrated in style last month. The women were helicoptered into Greenacres Golf Course where colleagues formed a guard of honour as they entered to receive their gold stars in recognition of their long service. “I can’t believe we have done it, it feels really good to get to this point,” says Bella.

She says they joined the brigade just one month apart as young mothers in the mid-1990s. “We have faced a lot of personal challenges, mentally, physically, we have been pushed to the limit of our abilities at times,” Bell says. “When I have stopped and thought about it and what we have put ourselves through, I am proud.” They say the longest and most difficult job the women faced was this year’s Tasman fires. Grace was down south when the blaze first began while Bella was driving into Nelson and saw that this was a big one. “I won’t say what I said to myself.” From day one, until the last flame was extinguished, Bella worked 200 hours during the emergency in the incident management team. “It was really hard, but it was equally rewarding, the organisations worked so well together.” Grace arrived the next day and she joined the fight on the ground. She was on the frontlines fighting

They say it is just the nature of the job. “When you leave home, you don’t know when you’ll be back,” Grace says. “You might be away for one hour, you might be gone all night.” Bella and Grace agree their work would not have been possible without the support of their husbands. They say, though they never once feared for their lives during the

25 years, it was never that case for their children. “The golden rule is all about personal safety, but our kids didn’t understand this,” Grace says. “They were always sure to say ‘I love you mum, be safe,’ when I’d leave.” Their roles have evolved from mainly scrub fires but now go to motor vehicle accidents and medical emergencies. “We have had some unpleasant ones, but you process your way

through those, ‘says Bella’. A particularly painful memory occurred on New Year’s Eve two years ago in the form of a fatal car crash. “I remember thinking ‘that person is not going home tonight’, and some mother is going to get the call that their child isn’t coming home,” says Grace. Though not always easy, Grace and Bella say it is a great feeling knowing you have helped out your community. “It’s been a privilege to be part of it.” Though they may not have another 25 in them, as they hope to spend some more time with their grandchildren, they have a few more years left at least. They hope to encourage more women to volunteer. “Believe in yourself, I didn’t think I could do it, women think they are not strong enough but it’s not actually about whether you’re strong enough. Yes, you do have to do some physical things, like dragging a hose up a hill, but you just do it.”

Local ‘green fairy’ calls it quits Tracy Neal of RNZ Controversial medicinal cannabis supplier Rose Renton is stepping down from the role of being a national “green fairy”. In February this year Rose was discharged without conviction on charges of cultivating 58 marijuana plants, after a judge ruled a conviction could stop her becoming a supplier of medicinal cannabis. Rose gained national attention in 2016 after presenting a 15,000 signature petition to Parliament, urging the government to make medicinal cannabis more readily available. Her campaign followed the death of her son Alex in 2015, for whom she had fought for the right to treat with cannabis products. Rose said she could no longer “carry the burden of those who are suffering”. “These are my final weeks of being a national green fairy. Carrying the burden of those who suffer has become too heavy ... the weight grows daily,” Rose posted on Facebook. She intended to return to a life that was hers and her children’s and no longer make or supply medicinal cannabis. She advised people to grow their own medicinal cannabis, or find a local fairy nearby to help. Rose’s lawyer, Sue Grey, said it had all taken a toll. “She is absolutely exhausted from

trying to help people, to educate them on medicinal cannabis, and help people to arrange medicine that’s safe and affordable.” While it was useful the Government was taking steps to allow cultivation and manufacture of medicinal cannabis, it was likely to be hugely expensive, Sue said. “The entry costs will make it impossible for any of the smaller green fairies to really get involved in the new system.” She said the prospect of years in jail on the multiple cultivation charges had been very stressful for Rose. “One of those was 14 years in prison for helping sick people. You can’t underestimate the stress involved in that.” Sue said Rose had also suffered from the loss of her son. “Rose is always trying to be positive and focused, and I know she feels that Alex sitting on her shoulder ... she’s done this for him, but everybody has their limits over how long they can keep fighting.” The Ministry of Health is currently developing a scheme that would enable domestic commercial cultivation and manufacture of medicinal cannabis, after public consultation on proposals for regulations between July and August this year. Regulations are expected to be announced by the middle of next month, with a Medicinal Cannabis Scheme to be operational in the first quarter of 2020.

Boyack to challenge Smith again at elections Charles Anderson Editor

Rachel Boyack will be Nelson’s Labour Party candidate for next year’s election, saying that longtime National MP Nick Smith’s time is over. “I committed after the last election that I wanted to run again,” Rachel says. “I feel like we have some unfinished business in the Nelson electorate.” She was the only nominee for Nelson and was confirmed as the candidate on Monday. She says she is “honoured” by the commitment of the Labour Party. In the 2017 election Rachel received the most candidate votes for a Labour candidate since MMP was instituted. She received 12,452 votes, or 30 percent of the vote, compared to Nick Smith’s 16,735 votes, or 40 percent. Nelson voted for Labour along party lines, but it is likely that Rachel’s vote was diluted by then Green Party candidate Matt Lawrey, who won 9,746 votes. “I came in a strong second and reduced Nick Smith’s majority by 3000 votes,” she says. “I was really delighted with my result.” Rachel says she is focussed on issues such as housing, climate

Rachel says recent polling suggesting a slide in some of Labour’s early glow was premature. “Polls jump around. The way we are tracking looks really good and we still have a year to go.” She lives in Nelson with her husband Scott and works as a health and safety coordinator for the Anglican Diocese of Nelson. In her spare time, Rachel volunteers on the boards of Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge and the

Nelson Environment Centre. She is also chair of Labour’s Policy Council. Nick Smith says he is committed to running in next year’s election but has to wait the outcome of the formal process which concludes next week. He congratulated Rachel on her nomination but says her challenge will be explaining “broken promises” from last election, including a swathe of Kiwi Build homes that have not eventuated, and the “sharp rise in cost of living”. Nick says that the party have asked him to continue as many senior MPs have retired recently and it was important to have the right balance between “new energy and experience”. Rachel says: “I want Nelson to be a place of opportunity so that our young people can see a future in the region for them and their families. “This means decent, affordable, housing and rewarding and satisfying work in a region that has so much to offer. “It means protecting our beautiful environment to maintain and preserve it for future generations. “And it means working to prevent family violence and supporting families to have decent incomes and opportunities.”

Though the results may not have gone their way, the Victory School Chess team has not lost their passion for the 1500-year-old game. The school founded a club for the first time this year and even managed to qualify for nationals after finishing second in the Top of the South regionals. This saw them travel to Christchurch for nationals, where they took on the best young players in the country. Victory had to fundraise to make the trip happen and thanks to sponsors such as the Nelson Rotary and

Embroidme Nelson, the school were able make their debut at nationals. “A huge thank you to the public who contacted us to help,” says teacher Cathryn Hayes. The children played up to nine games in the day which began at 9am and wrapped up at 5pm. Player Jarvas Ormsby-Halpen says despite the team not placing, they learnt a lot and were inspired to improve their own game. Staff Reporter After raising more than $111,000 for Nelson Tasman Hospice last year, NBS Dancing for a Cause will return in 2020. The group of nine local personalities who will compete were named at a launch event last week and include Nelson MP Nick Smith, ex professional basketballer Phill Jones and local lawyer Hamish Fletcher. Board chair for the Dancing for Cause Charitable Trust and dance teacher, Emma Silke-French, says she’s excited to have the privilege of putting the local personalities through their paces. “It is so much fun watching them improve and achieve everyone’s goal of putting on an amazing show. “The trust members and I have been working extremely hard to make sure the NBS Dancing for a Cause 2020 is bigger and better than the last and, with a bit of luck, we will raise even more money than last time for hospice. “ The dancers will begin rehearsals later this month in preparation for the big night. Masonic Hall fire puts groups in limbo Sara Hollyman Users of the Masonic Hall are expecting to be displaced for up to two years. Freemasons New Zealand District grand master Ian McLean says it could be Christmas before they get results from fire and insurance investigations. A fire took hold of the Nile St building around 10pm last Monday, with six fire crews battling to extinguish the blaze. “We’re not allowed in there at all yet, the fire service and insurance are all doing their investigations. Basically, it’s just a sit and wait situation.” Groups including the Nelson District Parents Centre, Colombian refugees and an Irish dancing group all use the hall on a weekly basis. He says, along with community group’s belongings there has also been the loss of historic masonic items. “These things are just irreplaceable, they’ve all been lost,” says Ian. He says no plans have been thought about for a rebuild as it is too early in the process to plan anything. “We’re going to be out of the hall for 18 months to two years,” says Ian. Fire and Emergency assistant area commander William Pike says no update is available on the cause of the fire. “Our Fire Risk Officer is utilising outside specialists to confirm ignition,” he says.

Not more black black black: Dear Ed, The new Betts Apartment development is not only as ugly as most modern architecture, but even worse, it's featuring the allover black look which is doing so much to dampen the environmentally-pleasing aspect of what Nelson has to offer. The new airport buildings are as bad. In fact, the black roofs now spreading all over New Zealand - black the colour of death - are thoroughly depressing. It’s about time the council, which used to be fussy about buildings blending into the green environment, looked at this overuse of black. John Oliver

Fireworks: Your impromptu survey on whether the public should have access to fireworks was timely. Even in my own little hamlet, “to ban or not to ban?” that is the question.

While sad cynics suggest that Guy Fawkes was the only person to go into parliament with the right idea, a celebration in 2019 of the bungling of a bunch of English upper-class catholic terrorists in 1605 will surely always be a fizzer. And when you see the feeble fireworks on sale today, a “fizzer” is just what Guy Fawkes day has turned into. The only surprise is that the social media twitterati haven’t renamed it Guy Fakes day. When I was a boy, some sixty or more Novembers ago, in a land where Brexit was a mere spelling mistake, fireworks were vigorous and fun, and you could buy something worthy of the name banger. But these days when danger lurks round every cycleway, those in power have decided that most people under 40 badly need protection from many normal activities that older generations took in their stride. So the public purchase of fireworks will have to go and strict university qualifications introduced for those wishing to display them. Andrew Rose

Most councillors now elected made pre-election promises in this regard, so now it’s time for ratepayers to see them follow up with action. Looking back at the performance of recent past councils, we see a history of much fighting and resultant dysfunction which has done little to address key problems faced by the city, and in particular, by desperate commercial ratepayers. This disharmony must be overcome, and the new council must show that it can be cohesive and work together to make progress on all fronts. There should be no room for petty political point scoring around this new council table. Voters have put their faith in wanting to see their council operate successfully and key problems largely overcome. Each councillor now needs to

look in the mirror and recognise the role she or he must play to achieve the harmony needed to take Nelson toward a brighter future. Hopefully, ratepayers can look back in three years’ time and say to council, ‘congratulations for a job well done’. Is that asking too much? Yours faithfully, Neville Male Boating bylaw: There have been two articles in the Nelson Weekly relating to recent changes in the Nelson City Council’s boating bylaw, and regarding the requirements for boats under 6 metres in length, both are wrong. The article on page 5 of the 23 October edition states that boats under 6 metres in length are required to have the owner’s name and contact details displayed above the waterline on each side of the vessel. The advice on page 18 of the 30 October edition is that nonpowered vessels less than 6 metres in length must have the owner’s name and contact details marked on the vessel. Both state-

Nelson Matters It is unusual for the Opposition to vote for a Government Bill. I am pleased and proud to have voted for the new Climate Change Response Act passed by parliament last week. I have long taken a keen interest in the science and issue of climate change and represented New Zealand as an MP and Minister at many of the global negotiations. Some of the end of world rhetoric is over the top but climate change is a serious risk. The new law establishes the Climate Change Commission that will recommend a timetable and means for reducing emissions. It is not a magic solution but it will help us make progress. I have

advocated for this approach as a previous Environment and Climate Change Minister after seeing the success of this approach in the UK. Bold talk on climate change is much easier than reducing emissions. Helen Clark, like Jacinda Ardern, referred to climate change as this generation’s nuclear free moment. The Clark Government committed to zero nett emissions but they went up 10% over those nine years. National did better over the next nine years with 0% emissions growth despite the population growing 15 % and the economy 25%. The current Labour NZ First Green Government has not reduced

emissions. They are up over the last two years with big increases from burning coal for electricity. We need practical measures that will get emissions down. That is why National in government insulated 400,000 homes, increased renewable electricity from 65% to 85%, electrified Auckland Rail, introduced incentives for electric cars and a phasing out of powerful synthetic greenhouse gases used for refrigeration. I made a personal choice a decade ago to purchase NZ’s first 100% electric car with my Mitsubishi Miev. It cost $67,000 as compared to the petrol equivalent of $27,000. The price difference has come down but it is

still significant. We need to be upfront about these costs. We also need to be careful of unintended consequences. The Tiwai Point aluminium smelter uses renewable hydroelectricity. Most smelters in the world are powered by burning coal. If we impose major climate change costs on it that forces its closure, the aluminium will be made elsewhere. We would increase global emissions and put 1,000 Southlanders out of work. We need to be equally careful with our farmers. New Zealand has only 1% of the world’s cows and 2% of the world’s sheep. Our farmers are the most efficient with lower emissions. It would

Luke cracks code to top Nelson College Jonty Dine Nelson College student Luke Garside lived most kids’ nightmare for five years, studying at school under the watchful eyes of both parents. Luke’s father, Stephen, is the school’s head of outdoor education, while his mother Diane teaches English, meaning there was little he could get away with. “I know some kids hide or change their reports to their parents, but I could never do that.” However, the extra accountability paid off big time as Luke was named the school’s Dux at prizegiving earlier this month. “I’ve been working hard all my time at Nelson College.” Luke won the Computer Digital, Calculus and Physics prizes as well as the Network Tasman Award for Science, Electronics, Business, the Fox River

Scholarship for Computer Studies, the Atmore Memorial Scholarship for General and Academic Excellence and Dux. The 17-year-old says his parents were a useful resource when required, though he was soon studying equations beyond both of their capabilities. “I have mostly managed to avoid them; I did have my dad as a teacher for half a year, which wasn’t easy, but it’s nice to have them there.” In 2019 Luke undertook physics, chemistry, calculus, computer studies and statistics while also doing ‘Math 109’ at Canterbury University. He will sit eight exams in total over the next few weeks and will be studying up to six hours a day. Luke says coding is his passion and he will study software engineering at Canterbury University in 2020.

Heavy rain led to flooding and slips which closed the main road to Murchison on Sunday evening. NZTA closed SH6 at 7.30pm on Sunday after reports began to come in of multiple slips, flooding and fallen trees blocking a section of the road between Korere and Glenhope. NZTA says it will remain

closed until at least midweek as agencies work to clear the road. A detour was in place using Korere-Tophouse Rd. Later on Monday morning, further slips brought State Highway 63 down to one lane near Howard. St Arnaud-Kawatiri Highway was under stop/go management about 2km east of Higgins Rd with no detour available.

Local actor returns for drag extravaganza Kate Russell For Nelson actor Nick Erasmuson, putting on a hefty dose of makeup and becoming a drag goddess is a powerful feeling. The 22-year-old former Garin College student, who is now based in Wellington, is bringing his show ‘Drag Up Your Life’ to the Theatre Royal this Saturday - a lip-sync extravaganza of classic

songs and top 40 hits. “I’m really excited. Last year we did a smaller show at Ghost Light Theatre and I pitched the idea for a bigger show at the Theatre Royal. I haven’t performed there in a long time - now I get to bring my drags.” Nick, who goes by the name is ‘Eva Goodcoq’ on stage, first began performing as a teenager with the Nelson Youth Theatre Company. “After college, I went to the UK to pursue musical theatre, which didn’t go so well. I came to Wellington for a change of pace and started going to different drag shows,” he says. “It was something I wanted to try out. It looked fun and I hadn’t been performing in a while, so I decided to give it a go. Two years later, I’m still doing it.” Nick says his favourite thing about drag is the freedom.

“There’s no rules with drag, you can be whoever you want to be and do whatever you want to do.” He describes Saturday’s performance as “a big show with great lip syncing and dancing, big glam group numbers and solos”. “It’s a really diverse cast so there is something for everyone.” The show is produced by international drag queen Kelly Fornia, who has been a key part of the New Zealand drag scene for the past four years. Nicks says It’s a PG show, which means they are aiming to make it suitable for everyone to come along. “Last time we were here a bunch of my old high school teachers came, so that was fun.” Drag Up Your Life is on Saturday, 16 November, 7:30pm at the Theatre Royal. Nelson artist Maggy Johnston says that it’s time to take a stand against the carbon dioxide output from the international clothing industry. Her exhibition in the McKee gallery at The Suter delivers this message in three parts and will culminate in an unfurling of a massive ball of fabric in Nelson’s CBD later this month. In ‘Fashion Conscious? Fashion Conscience?’ Maggy takes $5 T-shirts, imported from Bangladesh, and adds designer labels - the perceived value and social position that implies raising the price to extreme levels. In ‘Material Girl’, the centrepiece of the exhibition, the artist has taken cuttings from old clothing to make a dramatic dress more than three metres long, manipulating it to create an impression of high fashion value and opulence. The third part of the exhibition is ‘Rolling Stone’. Maggy is in attendance at the exhibition every day until November 23, working

her way through a mountain of discarded clothing which would otherwise be thrown into landfill. The clothing is cut into strips, then crocheted into a long rope and added to a huge ball of fabric. Maggy invites viewers to join her in this project. At the conclusion of the exhibition, a video project will document the unrolling of the ball through the heart of Nelson as an illustration of the growing size of the issues caused by the fast fashion industry. Lion King Jr is back

For the first time ever, Nelson Youth Theatre are playing a repeat season of its sell-out show Disney’s The Lion King Jr at the Theatre Royal from 18 - 22 November at 6pm. Director Richard Carruthers says they received a lot of feedback from people who missed out on seeing the show in July and also those who did see it, but were eager to see it again. Featuring some spectacular costumes and the magical songs of Elton John and Tim Rice, it has been labelled as the best youth theatre production yet. “Almost the entire cast have returned, and have been counting down the days,” says Richard. The new-look Tasman United side has had a less than stellar start to its 2019 campaign, suffering back to back losses in the National Football League. Tasman finds itself sitting at the bottom of the table after two rounds, going down 2-0 to Waitakere United in its first home game on Sunday. In a scrappy affair, the visitors required two late goals to sink Tasman, who controlled the match for the after for majority of the 90 minutes. It was a scoreless first half at a sodden Saxton Field. Both sides had their chances to open their accounts, but the final execution

was lacking. Tasman looked the more threatening and Jean-Phillippe Saiko and Jama Boss were looking increasingly dangerous on attack with the pair combining for Tasman’s best shot at goal in the opening 20. Jean-Phillippe was yellow carded for an aggressive tackle on Lachlan McIssac, who limped off the pitch. Facu Barbero was next to go close for the hosts on the back of a superb steal from Jama. Waitakere looked certain to break the shackles moments later, only to be denied by a desperate save from Pierce Clarke sending the sides to the sheds all square. Tasman again started the stronger of the sides in the second, creating opportunities, but was

unable to convert its dominance into points. However, a mistake from Tasman gifted Waitakere a chance which they gleefully accepted, with former Nelson College star Alex Connor-McLean slotting the goal to put his side ahead after the seventy-minute stalemate. Jean-Phillipe got the crowd on its feet shortly after as he found the back of the net, but was ruled offside. The New Caledonian international had one final shot at an equaliser but, as was the story of the day for Tasman, his effort went wide. Connor-McLean then capped the victory in injury time with his second goal, sealing a frustrating loss for the home side. Coach Jess Ibrom says, while the loss is disappointing, they won’t

dwell on the result. “We have to look forward now and just go again.” He says had there were a number of positive signs from Sunday’s outing. “We created a number of opportunities in that first half, it was unfortunate that we conceded possession the way we did which resulted in Waitakere scoring.” He says there is a firm belief in the team that they are heading in the right direction. “We have worked very hard to create this group in a short period of time. There are 16 games left, it’s a hell of a long season so we will turn up with a positive attitude against Hawke’s Bay next week.” Scorers: Waitakere 2 (Connor-McLean 2) Tasman 0

Black Caps game proves a winner Jonty Dine It may have ended with a series loss to New Zealand, but Nelson were the big winners last week as international cricket returned to the region. The Black Caps and England resumed their storied rivalry at Saxton Oval in the third T20I last Tuesday, the hosts winning by 14-runs in a highly entertaining encounter. New Zealand required a late flurry of wickets to claim the win and go 2-1 up in the five-match series after England seemed to be cruising at 138/2. The weather turned it on, and the crowd also did its part. Nelson Cricket chairperson Nettles Lamont says a total of 5619 fans packed the ground to witness two of the world’s best limited overs teams. Former coach Mike Hesson, who oversaw the Black Cap’s dramatic World Cup loss to England, says Nelson is always a favorite destination of the team. “The sun is out, everyone looks like they are on holiday, it’s a good pitch, beautiful ground and they always get good support, the guys love playing here.” England has since gone on to claim the series in thrilling fashion, winning a super over after the sides tied the decider at Eden Park.

Five Tasman swimmers selected for New Zealand Mark Lile Following successes at the New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championship, five members of the Tasman Swimming Club have been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2019 NSW State Open and Age Open Water Championships. The selection of 16-year-old Tasman Swimming Club members Alec Swan, Bendi Kepess, Sierra Thomas, Abbey Smale, and 15-year-old Isabella Thurlow was announced following a longdistance training camp run by Swimming New Zealand and held at the AUT Millennium Pool on the North Shore. A 19-medal haul at last month’s New Zealand Short Course Champions, held in Auckland, showcased the strength of the Tasman Swimming Club in long-distance swimming. Tasman’s Alec Swan won gold medals in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events, and picked up a silver medal in the 400m freestyle. Fergus Drummond won gold in the 1500m freestyle, and silver medals in the 800m and 400m freestyle events. Bendi Kepess picked up bronze medals in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events. Clubmates Sierra Thomas and Abbey Smale also excelled. Thomas won silver medals in the 800m and 1500m freestyle and bronze in the 400m free, with Smale winning bronze in the 1500m freestyle and gold in the 400m freestyle. Medals were also won by Samantha Harman, who won silver in the 400m Medley, Maddi Shallcrass for winning bronze in the 200m backstroke, Isabella Thurlow who got bronze in the 400m freestyle, and Samantha Wilson who won bronze for the 200m medley and silver for 100m butterfly events. Along with the 25 medals won at this national event, there were 18 Swimming Nelson Marlborough records broken.

SportS Golf Croquet: Nelson’s Ellie Ross has become Croquet New Zealand’s youngest ever three-time national champion. The 17-year-old retained her New Zealand Women’s Golf Croquet title at the Heretaunga Croquet Club in Hawke’s Bay last weekend. She defeated fellow Trans-Tasman teammate Helen Reeves 2-7, 7-3, 7-4. After going down to Reeves in the first game, Ellie raised her shooting averages significantly to take the last two and her third consecutive title comfortably. Cricket: Nelson cricketers Mason Robinson and David Leonard have again been named in the New Zealand squad for the over 50s World Cup.

Both men made their debuts at the 2018 edition in Australia. Mason is New Zealand’s all-time top run-scorer at over-50s level (342 runs at 57) and is the world’s leading over-50s wicketkeeper. New Zealand’s first match is on March 11, 2020 against West Indies. Football: Young footballers will have the chance to learn from some of the best players in the region. Tasman United will be running free football coaching courses at Nelson Intermediate over the coming month. Due to the team travelling to Hawke’s Bay this weekend, the first course will start this Friday and will run on Saturday’s until February 8, 2020. The courses will run from 1-4pm.

The Port Nelson Sea Swim Series opened on a sombre note on Thursday, with a modest turnout of 105 swimmers on a cold windy night, with sea temperatures of 16 degrees. Luke Kelly set out in his usual fashion in the long swim of 700m, unable to escape the lead role while others stuck to his heels. First let’s meet our selection team. Peter Grigg needs little introduction in Nelson rugby circles. A stalwart at Nelson College, the man has been involved with the 1st XV since 1996. Next is former New Zealand U19 rep and current community rugby manager for the Tasman Union, Kahu Marfell. Our final selector is none other than Mako coach Andrew Goodman, another former student who led Tasman to its maiden Mitre 10 Cup premiership this year. Our panel justifies its selections: “Probably the biggest and most contentious part of the debate revolved around were we picking the best players while they represented the school, or those who went on and had a stellar professional career? While the likes of mercurial first five–eighth James Lash, powerhouse number eight Trevor Coleman and effervescent outside back Robbie Malneek were all truly dominant at college level, none really boxed on into

the professional era. As a result of our own rules, the first four players pretty much picked themselves. We are especially blessed at prop with others such as Sam Prattley (Blues and Sunwolves) and Isaac Salmon (Blues) missing selection. Hooker Ratu Vugakoto (Fiji) was the only Old Boy playing at the recently completed World Cup. Second lock and loose forwards caused quite some consternation. Kahu Marfell and Sione Vatuvei (Japan) were both very serious contenders. This year’s skipper Anton Segner was selected by dint of his potential. In the backs we ended up doing a little juggling around to ensure we had all the best players in the final fifteen. The Marshall brothers and James Lowe have largely plied their trade in Europe while in Leicester Faingaanuku and Mitch Hunt we have a couple of All Blacks in waiting. This is an exciting backline and would be well sparked by the 2019 Crusaders

inside back combination. Other players such as Fletcher Smith (Chiefs), Lucky Mulipola (Manu Samoa and Highlanders), Mitchell Scott (Western Force, NZ Under 20) and Tima Faingaanuku (Crusaders, New Zealand Under 20) were undoubtedly unfortunate but there were only seven berths available. While there are undoubtedly numerous contenders for the team who were at Nelson College before this time – we had no real knowledge of their abilities. Nelson College have produced 18 All Blacks – but, at this stage, only three in the professional era and were therefore considered here. While All Blacks such as Trevor Morris and Nev MacEwan may feel somewhat disgruntled at their omissions, ‘we’ must stress that selecting a team such as this is an art, not a science. We apologise to anybody we offended with nonselection but are willing to discuss them over appropriate refreshments.”

Rain intervened in all three other clashes which caused no results. Joeline Jones says her competitive spirit started to show itself when she was just five-years-old. She asked her parents to let her join athletics and, even then, she wanted to win every race she entered. Fast forward more than 30 years and Joeline is still at the track and trying beat her teenage teammates. Her coach often reminds her ‘to have fun,’ as she tries to set a personal best every time she comes out of the blocks. The 38-year-old’s competitiveness has seen her shoot through the sprinting ranks in just a few years and landed her a fourth consecutive nomination for Masters Sportsperson of the year at the 2019 Nelson Sports awards. Joeline showed plenty of promise as a sprinter at high school but, thanks to being a “typical teenager,” her interest soon waned. Then, four years ago, a friend noticed her speed during a touch

Well close to 15,000 horsepower anyway, with the inaugural PTS Superstock Stampede kicking into gear this weekend at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. This meeting, bought to you in association with Barclay Engravers, sees some of the best Superstock drivers in the country converge here in Nelson to contest the PTS Superstock Stampede Trophy and the large amount of cash that’s on offer to the winner. This event has cost the local club around $20,000 to host and it all helps to attract the high-calibre field of drivers and cars to en-

After an eventful and fascinating journey, Dr. Paul Taylor passed away at home in Nelson early on Sunday, November 10th. Born in 1945 on the Wirral Peninsula in England, Paul was lucky to experience and contribute to many communities around the world through his devoted work as a paediatrician, culminating at Nelson Hospital. Much loved husband and friend of Frances for 48 years, father of Angus and Damian, and treasured grandfather of Elvie, Alexander, Moses, and Delta. He was generously and capably supported in his last stages of life by wonderful friends and compassionate professionals to whom his family are deeply grateful. In particular Kerry, Sam, Lorraine, and everyone from Nurse Maude, and the Nelson Tasman Hospice for the invaluable service they provide. He would have been happy to know a donation to savethechildren.org.nz was made in his memory in lieu of flowers. A gathering to celebrate Paul’s life will take place at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, Nile St, from 5 to 7pm on Thursday, November.14.
