Proponents of new multimillion-dollar apartment projects in Nelson say they are helping spur a change in perception about inner city living and how it might solve some of the region’s housing issues. Betts Apartments on Nile St have just opened, creating a model that Nelson City Council says could form the basis of more developments like it. The three-and-a-half-year project saw a councilowned carpark sold and turned into a 17-apartment complex ranging from $800,000 to $1.8 million. “It also opens up scope to use other models which enable council to leverage different housing choices in the city centre, without council actually being the developer,” says council city development team leader Lisa Gibellini. She says the project, which was fast tracked under the previous government’s Special Housing Area scheme, is seen as an essential part of enabling greater inner-city living of different types, price points and title options. “Council is therefore keen to further explore models such as these where we add value to the process,” Lisa says. However, chair of the company behind the Betts Apartments, Craig Dennis, says the issue is finding

He says while the Betts project represents the upper tier of buyers, he knows there is strong demand for “mid-range” buyers – between $650,000 and $800,000. “But the land is not there at a price that you can develop and sell in that price range. It also makes it harder that the SHA is no longer around, he says. “Had we had to go through consenting, I suspect we would never have tackled it as the risk of Environment Court is too great.” He says council does have land that could be redeveloped and also there are a number of commercial properties in town that could be repurposed into residential dwellings. A new apartment block on the Ocean Lodge site in Tahunanui has just started earthworks on the 37-unit complex, which comes complete with pool, spa and gym.
The $40 million Wakatu Incorporated project has been in the works for several years; however, its agent Tony Vining says it should now be complete by September 2021. “It will be fantastic for Tahuna. We have big plans for the area, and this will be the catalyst for that.”

Tony says that the Ocean Lodge project is another example of Nelsonians getting to grips with apartment living. “We can’t keep sprawling out into the wop wops.” Lisa Gibellini of council says other apartment developments underway also have affordability requirements, such as 71 Haven Rd. Of the 31 apartments in this complex, 40 per cent will be within or below the REINZcalculated nominal house price of $525,000 to $595,000 for a two-bedroom apartment. “People are changing their perceptions about inner-city living and apartment living in general in Nelson,” says Lisa.

An anticipated new intersection and associated traffic lights at Waimea Rd is expected to be operational in the next six months, with construction of the associated $125 million lifestyle retirement village to follow closely behind. The work is happening near Station Reserve, 350m north of Beatson Rd, for a new road that will provide access to the Tasman Heights subdivision and Coastal Views Lifestyle Village. Communications manager at Nelson City Council, Paul Shattock, says work on the road is already underway and the intersection upgrade, including the traffic signals, are anticipated to be completed by June 2020. The road will cross the Railway Reserve and the cycle path will need to be temporarily diverted. It’s been a controversial project, with councillor Mel Courtney unsuccessfully lodging a notice of motion to council earlier this year, asking that the non-notified resource consent granted for the traffic lights be revoked. The speed limit on that stretch

The Coastal Views Lifestyle Village will include residential units to house up to 300 people, including 180 standalone units, 60 apartments and 50 care beds. It will also feature a rest home/ hospital, dementia unit, lodge, clubhouse, restaurants, indoor pool, movie theatre, gymnasium, spa, hairdressing salon and chapel. Simon says, although they have had some anecdotal interest, they can’t actively promote the village until it is registered. Council says they will be working closely with the developer to finalise the cycleway underpass under the new road, and the path will need to be temporarily diverted during the construction process.

When Sandra Smith walked into the Nelson SPCA three years ago looking for a dog, she knew Nala was the one. The timid four-month-old puppy was lacking confidence and frightened of everyday things. But fast-forward three years and Nala has blossomed, thanks to plenty of love and patience from Sandra. “I used to pop in regularly and look at pups – until I saw Nala. I thought, ‘that’s the one I want’. I love her. It’s just the two of us, so she’s become a lovely pet and dear companion.” The pair love walking, so when Sandra heard about the SPCA’s Great NZ Paws Walk event happening in Nelson this Saturday, she knew she had to support it. The fundraiser walk at the Botanic Sports field is encouraging dog owners and supporters to come along to take a stand against animal cruelty. “This is something I wanted to support as I have a lot of time for the SPCA. They do a tremendous amount of work for animals that are not so fortunate. Hopefully it will be a good turn out.”
With Guy Fawkes having come and gone Fire and Emergency NZ have a clear message; don’t hoard them and use them throughout the year. FENZ assistant area commander William Pike says post-Guy Fawkes activity is a real concern as this week is when they are prepared and ready with extra resources. “We are really concerned that if you hoard them and they’re used during New Year celebrations, for example, that is when our risk would be higher. “The key message from us is don’t light fireworks in windy or dry conditions, light them in a wide, open, green area and light them in a bucket of sand.” He says his personal opinion on fireworks, after 33 years in the organisation, is “I don’t like them”. “This is just an ongoing issue that we encounter, lighting them after the night; It’s one of our areas that we’re really concerned about. He says the impact to animals and pets is also one of his personal concerns. William says he’s confident in the ability on FENZ staff to deal with incidents, but the rest is up to individuals to “show some common sense”.

She adopted her first in the early 1990s when her children were young and says she wouldn’t go anywhere else. “I’ve always been very supportive of the SPCA and the marvellous job they do, so that was my first port of call. I wanted to have a rescue dog. I wanted to be able to give a dog a home. “They have a wonderful scheme in that when you adopt a dog, you have them for a couple of weeks
on trial to make sure you’re both happy with each other - and she was never going to go back.” Nala was originally called Olive, but Sandra wasn’t so keen on the name - which happened to be her grandmother’s. “I chose Nala from The Lion King because the little lioness had lovely black eyes. Nala’s always got her eye makeup on.” Sandra has no idea what breeds she is made up of, so when people ask she says Nala is her

The SPCA aims to raise at least $150,000 nationwide through the fundraiser and to get involved participants must set up a fundraising page, ask their friends and family to sponsor them and join the walk. Council pay approved No limits for college Nelson city councillor’s new pay has been decided. Last week council voted on approving councillor pay at $44,900, with chairs of committees getting $52,143. Deputy mayor Judene Edgar will receive $62,662 and Brian McGurk, who has been named the “super chair” because of his roles on four different committees, will also get $62,662.
However, the decision sparked debate over the fairness of Brian’s pay. Councillor Kate Fulton suggested his pay go down by about $3000 and push up councillors and chair’s pay by $500. However, the original pay structure was voted in by six to three, with Mayor Rachel Reese, Judene and Mel Courtney abstaining.

A business idea prompted by a failed driving test has seen a group of Nelson College students win a regional enterprise competition, as well as secure a contract with one of the country’s biggest roading contractors. ‘LimitLess’ were crowned the Top of the South champs in The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme last week for their worldfirst temporary road sign cover. Member Logan Schokking says the idea for the ‘nanosign’ was born after a friend failed his driving test because he didn’t see a speed sign. “We brainstormed ideas around that and figured out there aren’t many solutions to temporary signage. We looked at a few materials that we could use and ended up finding nano technology.” The nanosign is a durable, NZTA-approved sign cover that can stick to a range of surfaces without coming off. This means road maintenance contractors can manage speeds through road

Nelson streets were hopping on Sunday for the annual Uniquely Nelson Street Hop Festival. Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy says it was a huge day and plans are already being discussed to make next year even better. “This year we spread out, having the bands spread more around town... we’re here to support the local hospitality and it was a brilliant day.” He says more than 90 cars were on display along with the odd motorbike. Prizes were dished out to the top three cars voted for by People’s Choice and this year prizes were also awarded for a best-dressed category. “What struck me was you’d see these people standing round, talking about their cars and it was such a mix of people both young and old,” says Simon. That included Ellie Duff, 5, who enjoyed posing by one of the classic cars. The sun was shining on a day dedicated to remembering those who have gone before us. Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead was celebrated at Founders Heritage Park on Sunday. Organiser Jesus Ruiz Lopez says the day celebrated the afterlife and was a chance to connect with those who had passed. He says it is always special being able to share part of his culture with the Nelson community. “Inside we are all just skeletons, so you need to enjoy life and remember that we are here, and we are alive.” Eight-year-old Poppy Sheehan returned to the festival after a successful first year selling handmade sugar skulls in 2018. Having been stuck on the motorway a few weeks back after an accident, it makes me wonder why Nelson and Tasman councils haven’t secured another lateral road route in and out of town yet. They have consented to the huge development of the Summerset Retirement Village off Hill St in Richmond, why was it not made part of the consent process that Hill St joined onto Suffolk Rd in Stoke? This would have been so logical and would help ease some of the congestion off the main roads, especially when the motorway is closed. Why all the focus on just the idea of a Southern Link? We need to
start joining up infrastructure we already have. Baby steps. Annie
New Nelson City Council: Good luck to the newlyelected Nelson City Council. I wonder what this council’s legacy will be? Probably not a lot, for history shows new councils tend totally to ignore the rulings of their predecessors. Back in the 1980s, I recall many avenues were explored and few stones left undisturbed when Nelson City Council radically, and unilaterally, resolved that the city become nuclear-free. At around the same time there was much two-faced debating of health benefits when a policy stating that only low-alcohol beer could be sold on council property and reserves was ratified. And in 2001, after much passion, council resolved that the city

Nelson Matters Graduation and prize giving week at our colleges is an opportunity to celebrate the success of our young people and the excellence of Nelson secondary schools. It is extra special for me having both a son and daughter completing college this year. The quality of Nelson schools is part of what makes our community so successful. It is about investing in the knowledge and skills for Nelson’s future. There is intense world-wide competition for talented business people, medical professionals, scientists etc, and to attract them to Nelson we need schools amongst the very best. Nelson has a proud heritage of leadership in education. Our
early settlers were revolutionary in their goal of schools being free and accessible to all. We should be very proud that Wakefield is home to New Zealand’s oldest primary school (established 1843) and that Nelson College (established 1856) is New Zealand’s oldest secondary school. We were ahead of the times in championing women’s education with the Girls College being established in 1883 and led by Kate Edgar, the first woman in the British Empire to get a university degree. A rich heritage is not enough to make a great school. I am proud of how both our original colleges have responded to the new challenges of our times
like youth mental health, social media and increased cultural diversity. I particularly wish to pay tribute to retiring Nelson College Headmaster Gary O’Shea. The Gibbons Trade Academy, Whare and upgraded Rutherford Boarding House are part of Gary’s strong legacy. I am equally proud of Waimea and Nayland Colleges led by two of New Zealand’s top secondary school principals, Scott Haines and Daniel Wilson. Waimea College is under pressure from strong roll growth but continues to impress with its academic and sporting achievement. Nayland College was struggling five years ago but is now going from strength to

strength. I confess to a personal soft spot for Garin College. I was responsible for its establishment as Minister of Education. I like Nelson parents having the additional choice of this Catholic integrated school. It is a very successful college excelling in academics and the performing arts. How do we ensure the future success of our colleges? Firstly, we need to back our Boards and Principals. I worry that Government plans to centralise power with the Ministry of Education will reduce local decision making by Principals and Boards. Secondly, we do need healthy competition between our colleges, by parents having choice
about where to enrol. Thirdly, we need to champion the importance of the teaching profession. My optimism for the future always gets a boost from attending college prizegivings. I provide an Environment Award to all five colleges to recognise top students. Many other organisations also help by rewarding our talented young people. I congratulate the prize winners and wish all senior students well with their NCEA exams. My warmest tribute is to Nelson’s teachers who have given so much to my children and their peers as they now go out and make their way in the world. Advert.

“This will happen again, and we need to be prepared.� That’s the message from Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) after the release of an independent review into the operational response to the Tasman Fires. FENZ commissioned the independent review by the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council to look at how they responded to the Pigeon Valley, and subsequent fires across the region. It found that there was a “general lack of awareness within the Nelson Tasman community around the risk, to them, of unplanned fire�. A common comment heard by the review was “it won’t happen again in my lifetime�, which they say demonstrates a reluctance, by some, to change the way they do things. FENZ deputy chief executive Raewyn Bleakley speaking from Richmond Fire Station last Wednesday called the response a “truly collaborative and unified action� between multiple organisations. The fire, which began on February 5, burnt through 2300 hectares of land and, at its peak, had 23 helicopters, 2 fixed wing planes, 23 heavy machines and more than 150 firefighters battling to control and ultimately contain it. In the following days and weeks other fires broke out in Atawhai, Rabbit Island, Moutere Hills and Dovedale. “These extra fires added significantly to the challenge that our people faced,� said Raewyn. FENZ national commander and deputy chief executive of service delivery Kerry Gregory said he was proud of firefighters’ dedication and commitment, but stressed that we need to be prepared for next time. “These aren’t one offs; this will happen again, so we need to be prepared for when it does.�

So, Paul’s mother used to make chapati’s at home which were hand delivered to the restaurant every night. Then we got a tandoori oven, so we needed a tandoori chef. Bobby asked me if I would like that role, but rather than be in shut in a hot kitchen, I

From the Rocky Mountains in North America to the deserts of South Africa, the KTM Rallye will make its next stop in Nelson this weekend. The region will host the KTM Adventure Rallye for the very first time and will see five action-packed days of adventurers treated to a course set by local experts. Local rider Will Furniss says KTM is considered a religion and its local devotees take immense pride in their backyard. “It is only held once a year and
this year it will be in the Top of the South, it is a chance to show Nelson off.” The rallye will begin in Nelson, go through Murchison, Hanmer, Picton and back to Nelson. “It has all those traditional Nelson attributes, sun, mountains, views.” Will says the local organisers have spent the last 15 weekends marking out the track with GPS and talking to landowners. “We have riders who are passionate about the brand and the local riding scene.” A field of 130 riders will be rolling into town for the event, from Japan, Australia, America and throughout New Zealand.
Will says they will experience some “gnarly terrain” along the 2000km route. “We have been liaising with local forests and council and there has been some great cooperation, so we will be getting to ride some areas not normally open to public.” The rallye will also have a support crew of medics and mechanics along for the ride. This enables riders to have luggage transported to camp each night. Top of the South KTM Adventure Rallye runs from November 10 – 14. Global poets unite in Nelson
Three poets are uniting for a special evening of verse at Deville next week. Poets Omar Musa, Michael Pedersen, and Dominic Hoey will come together from different parts of the globe to regale you with poetry on their tour of Aotearoa.
Omar Musa is a MalaysianAustralian author, rapper and poet from Queanbeyan, Australia. Michael Pedersen is a prize-winning poet, writer and animateur from Scotland who has read all over the world. And Dominic Hoey is an author, playwright and poet based in

While most young married couples might spend their spare time at the farmers’ market or going to the movies, Hoani and Kirsten Takao are in the gym throwing punches. The husband and wife are both set to feature on the card when professional boxing returns to the region this weekend. ‘Legends of Nelson’ will see 12 fights, including two professional bouts, go down at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday. Hoani will be competing in his third fight while Kirsten is preparing to make her ring debut. She was inspired to don the gloves after watching her husband get between the ropes and pick up his second victory back in February. “It is always something I want to do, and he was my motivation,” Kirsten says. Just a few months after joining the gym, Kirsten was asked by owner
Randall Dixon if she wanted to fight. “I’m really excited. I’m counting sleeps but also nervous, it’s not like it’s just here at the gym.” Her opponent, Canterbury’s Kelly McKay, already has a win under her belt and poses a stern challenge. However, Kirsten is confident she will have the instinct necessary to get the win. “There will be no hesitation, it will be different to punching your friends at training, I would love that chance to finish the fight.” Hoani, on the other hand, is less concerned about improving his 2-1 record. “It’s special for me to be sharing it with my wife, celebrating her debut, regardless of the outcomes it will be a great night.” Hoani’s bout on Saturday will be a rematch of the fight he had against Riki Winiata, Hoani winning the previous bout by split decision. “He’s a good fighter, has heavy hands but I have a plan to counter that.”

Two years ago, Hamish Powell was just mountainbiking for fun when his friend convinced him at the last minute to enter nationals. “I thought I might as well give it a shot,” he says. Despite little preparation, and battling a suspected concussion, Hamish was crowned the best in the country for his age. It’s a title he has kept since. The Nelson College student has now won the secondary schools nationals three years in a row, a legacy he wants to continue throughout his high school career. But Hamish’s first title didn’t come easily. The 14-year-old took a nasty crash during a practice run in 2017 and had to be tested for concussion. After answering just four of the five questions correctly, Hamish was told to go see a medic. However, he defied those orders and opted to race anyway, placing first in the downhill. After repeating the feat in 2018, Hamish was convinced to switch from downhill to enduro after
watching YouTube videos got him “intrigued”. It wasn’t long until he was dominating this discipline too, winning the U14 enduro in Dunedin last month. He says he enjoyed a smooth ride after some heavy rain in the region before the competition. “It was pretty wet on the Wednesday, but it dried up by Friday and the track was in really good condition.” Hamish is now spending up to 20 hours a week riding. “Nelson is really good for riding, when you do a bit of back country you get some really good views.” His affinity for two wheels started at a young age. “I was about three when I jumped on a bike, and got rid of the training wheels pretty quick.” He says it was a love of sharing moments with mates that drove his passion. A torn ligament in his shoulder forced him out of rugby and led him to focus on mountainbiking. Though he has endured plenty of injuries coming off the bike too, he is never deterred by the crashes. “It’s always in the back of your head but you get used to it, it’s all worth it despite the risks.”

The Nelson Speedway lit up the sky with their annual Coca-Cola Fireworks Display on Saturday. The racing got under way with the street stocks. There were plenty of hits and spins, as the locals mixed it up with drivers from Christchurch and Blenheim and kept the crowd entertained. The Nelson Knights street stock team which will face Blenheim was named, with Kyle and Kieran Davies, Ryan Musgrove, Neville Soper and KC Rose all making the line-up. It was the stock cars which came out to play next. However, Cody Teece’s return to the track lasted less than a lap when he lost his rear wheel after being taken out by Troy Currie. The stock cars ended with a bang with Dylan Hall tipping his brother Adam upside down on the wall, much to the crowd’s delight. The T.Q’s had the biggest field of

There were plenty of new and returning drivers which made for some busy racing. Visiting driver Rodney Thompson took the first heat with Morgan Frost winning heat two, then staying ahead of the field to take the 20-lap feature. The youth ministocks continued to impress with Blake Hearne winning heat one and Campbell McManaway picking up heat two and three wins. There might be a shift in the side car grade with Nippy Ching and Shaun Solly taking
all three wins in their heats to win the Brett Lusty Memorial trophy, while Adie Drake and Kieran Satherley had to settle for second. The super stocks once again came down to a two-horse race between Alex Hill and Brett Nicholls. After Hill took the honours in the opening meeting it was Nicholls who prevailed to win the Dave Scott Memorial trophy, before the fireworks lit up the night sky to end an eventful night.

New Tasman United striker Facu Barbero took the long way around to get to Nelson. The Argentinian boarded a plane bound from his homeland to New Zealand last week, however, cancellations saw him go through Brazil, Ethiopia, Hong Kong and China before finally touching down in Auckland four days later. As exhausted as he was, Facu was so excited to meet his team that he headed straight from the airport to training. The 23-year-old is the latest signing for Tasman United, completing a formidable international attacking trio with Jama Boss and JeanPhillippe Saiko.
When Jess Ibrom called Facu with an offer to spend the summer in Nelson playing football, he took less than half an hour to decide. “I was just starting uni, but I spoke to my family and they said to go for it.” Facu first came to New Zealand in 2014 where he played for Island Bay in Wellington and later for Hawke’s Bay United. “I didn’t speak any English, so it was quite hard at first.” However, Facu soon became a fan favourite, thanks to his goal scoring exploits. “I love New Zealand, I was always keen to come back and I knew Jess from my time in Wellington, so that’s how this opportunity came up.”
Like rugby is to Kiwis, football is a religion in Argentina. Facu says his earliest memories are around the game he loves playing with balled-up socks in the middle of the street. “Cars would even wait for someone to score before trying to get through. The first thing you do in Argentina is kick a ball around.” Superstar Lionel Messi is, of course, hero to Facu. “He is the best in the world, my idol, if you are from Argentina you have to love Messi.” Though he would love to follow in the footsteps of the world’s best player, Facu says he is realistic about his chances of making the national team in Argentina. “It’s basically impossible but is still, of course, a dream.”

We have community groups which use the club every week for breakfast meetings, large group meetings and dinner meetings, including: Nelson Business Network, Rotary, Probus
Groups, The Lions and U3A. Rebecca says retirement homes bring residents to the golf club. “They enjoy it, as they can watch the planes coming and going, play the piano and enjoy some delicious freshly-baked food. Because we have a lift, access is available for wheelchairs, plus there is room for them to spread out and stay as long as they like. The café is open to the public and we are seeing more groups of cyclists and walkers using it as a pit stop.”
With the café and full catering available, plus a fantastic Football Golf Course, the club is great for kids’ birthday parties and also works well for work do’s and team building. “We also have a driving range where they can hit balls and have a lot of fun and exercise,” says Derek. Businesses or groups can book now for Christmas functions which can be catered for as required. Can be a set menu or buffet, they are very flexible.

“We made the decision to bring the catering back inhouse this year,” says Derek. “Monique Tasker, who is our Cafe/Bar/Function Manager, is very experienced and a really good caterer, who provides homemade cafe food. Subsequently, they have seen a huge increase in members and groups using the club. “We now have catering available 7 days a week and it’s open for breakfast too with a new all-day
menu,” says Rebecca.

The club currently has over 560 playing members who are thoroughly enjoying their links course. “Golf is great for anyone, including people who are new to the area,” says Derek. “There’s lots of options for memberships including juniors,” says Rebecca. “Having ‘Total Golf ’ next door is a real bonus” says Derek. “It’s run by brothers Sean and Blair Riordan who are top class professionals. We are very fortunate to work with them. They offer lessons for all ages and hold a great stock of equipment and clothing,” says Rebecca. The Nelson Golf Club holds various events throughout the year. “Businesses come here and have 18 or 9 holes of golf with their employees or customers. We

have barbeques for them down at the Wendy House, then they come in for food and drink and presentations.”

SportS Half marathon: One of Nelson’s biggest running events on Sunday saw a field of 800 runners take part. Based at Saxton Field, the Nelson Half Marathon pits runners and walkers in 2.5km, 5km, 10km and 21.1km races. In the longer event, Paula Canning was the first female across the line in 1:25:42 while Aditya Kesarcodi-Watson took first place in a time of 1:14:35.
Much fishing to come Tracey Meek Have you managed to get out between the howling gales for a fish lately? Some of our members took the small window of opportunity last Saturday morning as they entered our annual Goldfish vs Sharks competition (girls vs guys). No prizes this time only bragging rights which are always great if you are the winning team. If you would like to know who the better fishers are you’ll need to join us for our monthly social day on 10th November (3-5pm @ City Club) when all will be revealed. Fishing is still patchy, lots of sharks and red cod, however the snapper seem to be arriving slowly, so should get better from here as the weather warms and the wind drops. There have been reports of brave spear fishers entering the water for a look
around and a few butterfish and crays being brought to the surface. The visibility along the boulder bank is less than ideal at the moment but you can get good days out of Okiwi Bay and around D’Urville Island. Bring the 7mm suit if you have one, the water is still quite chilly. The club’s traditional Kid’s Wharf Fishing will take place on the 16th of November. This is a great family event with fish and chips for lunch, generously sponsored by Jimmy’s Bait and Concrete Cutter and Concretex. This will be a perfect opportunity to try out Jimmy’s range of baits while having a fun day with the kids. Sports Awards: The region’s most successful athletes will be celebrated at the 2019 ASB Sports Tasman Awards on Thursday, November 21. The ultimate accolade of the evening is the ASB Sportsperson of the Year who is determined from the winners of the eight categories including Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year and Sport Team of the Year. Among the nominees for the big prize will be cricketer Greg Hay, lawn bowler Shannon McIlroy, and stand-up paddleboarder Tara Hope. The Mitre 10 Cup champion Mako side are in the running for team of the year as well as the Nelson Suburbs MPL team.
Harriers: Wednesday evening saw the last race in the Spring Smugglers 5km series for 2019. While some great battles have been had at the front of the field each week, participation and enjoyment were the key ingredients of the five races in the series. Joe Robson and Chris Sharland were two runners who have enjoyed very close encounters most weeks, this last race being no exception, with Joe in 18.06 mins edging out Chris by only four seconds. The summer schedule for running and walking in the Nelson/Tasman region, which starts this week, has events most weekday evenings and on Saturday afternoon for all ages and stages of fitness, so come out and challenge yourself.
