First livestreamed debate for mayoral contest Staff Reporter The Nelson Weekly and Nelson App will host what is thought to be the first ever livestreamed mayoral debate next month in preparation for this year’s local government elections.

The debate will pit the five major mayoral candidates against each other - Rachel Reese, Mel Courtney, Tim Skinner, Bill Dahlberg and Mike Ward – in a format that is sure to challenge each of them on the issues they are standing for.

The debate will be held at The Workshop Bar and Brewery on New St on September 22 – the weekend where voting papers will start arriving in people’s letterboxes. Weekly editor Charles Anderson says that he hopes the event takes

some of the perceived stuffiness out of local body politics. “While Nelson had the highest voter turnout in the 2016 election, that was still only 52 percent of the population. Part of this has to do with people not being engaged with the process.”

Charles says by hosting the debate in a bar, people who might not ordinarily be interested in such an event might feel more comfortable in learning more about those who are looking to

The attendance record of Nelson City councillors has been laid bare but not all are in agreement as to how much importance should be placed on it. Councillors aren’t obliged to attend all meetings, as they are appointed to specific committees at the beginning of the council term - but they are given the opportunity to attend all meetings. According to the latest meeting figures from Nelson City Council, from June 2018 until June 2019, only one councillor had a 100 per cent attendance rate – Mel Courtney. Mel says meetings are something councillors must place as a top priority. “The public place enough trust in us to manage this huge organisation. You must follow through on the commitment. You can’t just have it on the side, you’ve got to be on the job.” Gaile Noonan also had zero

apologies but was on a leave of absence for four of her meetings. Most councillors had an average of two apologies - including Matt Lawrey, Ian Barker, Brian McGurk and Mike Rutledge. Bill Dahlberg, Stuart Walker and Tim Skinner had three. Both deputy mayor Paul Matheson and mayor Rachel Reese had five apologies while Rachel did not attend a further 11 meetings over the year because of other council commitments. Luke Acland, who is the only councillor with a full-time job, entered six apologies over the year with another six ‘did not attends’ with no apology given although he told Nelson Weekly some councillors “continually refused” to accept his apologies. “The regretful thing is, the attendance record and ‘apologies’ have become a point scoring exercise,” he says. Kate Fulton, who only had one apology throughout the year, believes although meeting attendance is important, it’s not a reflection of the work put in.

“It’s not an appropriate measure. The more committees you are on the more meetings you must attend. Some councillors are on more committees than others. Some are on more working parties and then there’s a lot of things we’re doing behind the scenes.” She also says not all meetings are the same. “One meeting I attended was only two minutes long. Some are rescheduled last minute which can be hard for those councillors with work and family commitments.” Kate was one of the only councillors to attend meetings via audio link. This has been an option for councillors this past term and she says it’s necessary if we want a range of people on council. “I had an out-of-town family emergency, but I was at no disadvantage. I was totally engaged and could follow everything clearly. “If we want a want a diverse table, we need to support other councillors commitments.”

NEWS Oral health and the heart: The Heart Foundation is holding a free community information session for people living with heart disease to understand oral health and the heart. Uber to launch in Nelson Jonty Dine Uber is set to launch in Nelson in October, but a local taxi company is warning potential drivers to be wary of the global ride-share giant. Nelson City Taxi executive director and chairman Graeme Page says Uber may not be the lucrative cash cow it promises to be. However, he is welcoming the move and expects his company to cope with the competition. The San Francisco-based company says it will launch its services in Rotorua, Taupo, Napier-Hastings, New Plymouth, Palmerston North and Nelson in October, taking its number of operating cities in New Zealand to 13. “We always expected them to come at some point, this is a bit sooner than we thought but we are ready,” Graeme says. However, he doesn’t believe drivers will make able to make a comfortable living. “What they will find is that other than on Friday, Saturday night, there is not much happening, I will be surprised if they can actually make any money.” He says the smaller population will mean smaller profits.

Photo: Jonty Dine. “The only way they will make money is with volume and there is no high volume in Nelson.” Graeme says Uber struggles to survive outside the big cities. “Anywhere they have gone in regional Australia or America, taxi companies are still going strong.” Nelson City Taxis launched its own app “ihail” at the beginning of the year. “I want Nelson to have both apps and then they can compare.”

He says with ihail, customers have the option to enter credit card details and will not be stung with any surcharge. Security is another concern of Graeme’s, who says a lack of cameras puts riders at risk. “We have them, so we can have the ride checked.” Graeme says driver vetting process is not nearly thorough enough. He says any new driver in his fleet has to undergo 20 hours minimum training, followed by an induction process.

Graeme says Nelson City Taxis is looking to grow its fleet and believes the business will continue to grow. “We are not going away,” Graeme says. Uber New Zealand country manager Amanda Gilmore says the launch will give more Kiwis access to “convenient and affordable transport”. Gilmore says the company had “faith in NZ as a market that can succeed in the world of ride-sharing”.

Only a few months ago Pic Picot was thinking up his latest scheme – an ‘inventor centre’ where budding food entrepreneurs could create their dream products in a safe space. Fast forward and now Pic’s ‘Food Factory’ has just received more than $750,000 from the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund. “It’s just steamed along really,” says Pic. “We put the roof on last week.” He says the concept of the place is somewhere people can try out their ideas and take them to market. “It will be a supportive space where people can get help to develop ideas. What I really hope is that people in there help each other rather than having a whole bunch of ‘experts’ telling them what to do.” The Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) also loaned Nelson Artificial Intelligence Institute Limited (NAII) a $3.4 million to help develop the economic and social opportunities the Artificial

a supported, collaborative environment. “Ideally we want people who will develop something and then scale up,” says Pic. “Then others will be able to come and watch how a business starts and maybe be inspired themselves, and that is really exciting.” Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says the council has a strong focus on adding value to our traditional industries and in a sustainable manner through the application of artificial intelligence technology. Rachel says Nelson is the ideal location for such ventures, given our region’s reputation as a renowned centre for food production, aided by our favourable climate, quality soils and marine environment. “We have the right ecosystem of producers, research and innovation, business talent, and a natural competitive advantage in the food and beverage sector to ensure the success of this venture,” she said. The PGF has also provided $400,000 funding over two years to help grow the region’s economic development projects.

More Nelson drivers are being caught driving on their phones, with one driver caught twice in two days at the same location. Figures released by NZ Police earlier this month show that during the three months from April to June more than 340 tickets were issued for using a mobile while driving in the Nelson Bays area resulting in more than $25,000 of fines. The infringements are more than double the previous period and more than three-times higher than drivers in Marlborough. Tasman road policing manager senior sergeant Grant Andrews says it’s “disappointing behaviour”. “[It] puts those drivers and everyone else on the road at risk.” He says police will never know how many deaths or serious injuries their enforcement and education efforts have prevented but does know they’re making a positive difference. “People just need to remove the temptation turn it onto silent, put it where you can’t reach it, and check your phone when you get there.” He says road safety is everyone’s responsibility and all road users need to play their part. “Things can change in a split second and if you’re not paying attention you may not have time to react and avoid a crash. “No call or text is more important than your life, or the lives of others.”

Local Navy commander honoured with award Staff Reporter

When Nelson man Brendon Oakley was told he was being awarded a top New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) honour he had one request – that his family be able to attend the presentation. That’s because Commander Oakley credits his wife Lisa, son Lukas, and twin daughters, Brooklyn and Ruby, as a huge reason he has been able to succeed in the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and NZDF. Commander Oakley, a former deputy head boy at Waimea College, who has recently returned with his family to live in Nelson, received the Defence Meritorious Service Medal, which is awarded for exceptionally meritorious service by a member of the NZDF. His citation pointed first to his contribution from 2013-2016 as Commander of the NZDF Support Unit (South East Asia) based in Singapore, which provides support to NZDF operations throughout Asia. As part of this role he was the Commanding Officer of the New Zealand Installations Auxiliary Police Force – a force of Singaporean police officers administered by New Zealand who are responsible for security and force protection of the Sembawang Naval Installation used by New Zealand, Australia the United Kingdom and United States navies.

Commander Oakley’s posting to Singapore also made him the Assistant Defence Adviser to the New Zealand High Commission. These extra duties required him to manage a range of international relationships, and his citation noted “the NZDF’s military relationships across the region were significantly strengthened”. The other part of his award was for his contribution as the Director of Naval Strategy from 2016-2018, where he reinvigorated the RNZN’s strategic planning and management processes. Commander Oakley said the award was as much for his family as it is was for him. “I couldn’t have done any of this without my family – they’ve always been there supporting me,” he said. “I think what has meant the most about this award is the recognition it gives to Lisa and our family for what they’ve contributed and achieved.” Commander Oakley joined the RNZN in 1993 as a Weapons Engineer, drawn to the notion of service and helping people in the world while representing the country. “When you work with partner militaries and organisations they are always really welcoming of New Zealand’s contribution because of the values, ethics and unique culture that we bring,” he said.

Protesters unite over Nelson Club racism allegations Jonty Dine Protesters advocating for tolerance took to the entrance of the Nelson Club on Friday evening in light of recent allegations of racism and homophobia at the exclusive establishment. About 50 locals rallied outside the club with scores more driving past and tooting their support. Two weeks ago, the club met to decide the fate of the member who is alleged to have made anti-Muslim and homophobic comments at an event late last year. The incident led to the resignation of the then club chairperson, when the committee refused to censure the member in question. Protest organiser Debs Martin said the club needed to step into the 21st century. “If this is meant to be a respectable place for people to come and meet then it has to respect people of all genders, races and religions.” Debs says the club needs to be less secretive. “They should be transparent, open and supportive of the community, they need to censure this type of behaviour. She says the number of protesters and support shown speaks volumes of how the Nelson community views this sort of rhetoric. Photo: Jonty Dine. tamariki. “We need to remember to be kind to each other, we are all human.” Meanwhile, Nelson MP Nick Smith says the Nelson Club needs to put the “ugly exchange of words” behind it. Nick, who is an associate member of the club, has organised an information function at the establishment with the Nelson Islamic Society, as a way to improve local cultural understanding. “Racism and Islamophobia has no place in Nelson. I do not think the offensive comments made by one member to another at a Christmas function last year are representative at all of the club, but given the horrific events in Christchurch in March, we need to find a way to improve cross-cultural understanding.” The club will host a luncheon in September with Dr Moayid Sherif, the Imam of Nelson

Mosque and President of the Nelson Islamic Society, as guest speaker. Dr Sherif will speak on Islam, the Quran and the New Zealand Muslim community. “The goal of the function is for the club to engage with our local Muslim community, better understand Islam and to recognise that all people regardless of race or religious beliefs share the same basic human values.” Nick says he “commends” the club for taking up his suggestion and Dr Sherif for accepting the invitation. “The club needs to put the ugly exchange of words last year behind it. This is a good positive way to move forward.” At the last club meeting, the member in question stepped down from the club’s committee but was permitted to keep his membership while the club voted to make an amendment that would make it forbidden to speak publicly about club business.

Region’s speeders rack up fines

The Nelson Tasman region has forked out more than $870,000 in speeding fines during the first half of this year. Figures released by police show that the Nelson Bays area has been issued 13,325 tickets for speeding in the six months from January to June 2019. More than 10,000 of those were from mobile speed cameras with just 2344 being issued by police officers. January was the worst month for drivers with almost a quarter of the total fines value registered during the month - $206,810 followed closely by April. Nationally, police saw more than $52 million in speeding fines issued during the first half of the year, with almost half coming from fixed speed cameras across the country.

It has been a big year for jeweller Ben Clark. His company Benjamin Black Goldsmiths, which was founded in 2012, has its eyes on the future. But it was Ben’s win of Young Business Person of the Year at last year’s Nelson Pine Industries Chamber of Commerce Business Awards that was a great feather in his cap. “It was really great to be nominated,” says Ben. “A lot of people comment on it. It’s just a really well-run event.” He says, being a small business, there are a lot of arms to it, which he and coowner Amy Cunningham have to do themselves. But that has not held them back. Instead, they are currently at Auckland Fashion Week checking out potential new people to work with. “Over the year we have been expanding into more stores around the country

Treasured pounamu welcomed to Nelson Sara Hollyman Reporter

A collection of pounamu like no other has officially opened for viewing at the Nelson Provincial Museum. More than 200 pieces of historical pounamu are now on display as part of the Kura Pounamu – Our Treasure Stone Exhibition. Created by Te Papa, working closely with Ngai Tahu and other iwi, the exhibition features ancient and contemporary pounamu taonga from all tribal areas of New Zealand, including the Nelson Tasman region. Kura Pounamu tells the story of this most precious of stones, its significance to Maori, and its enduring value from ancient times until today. The collection features unique pieces including and extremely rare red pounamu, a toki (adze blade) which dates back to more than 800 years and a large touchstone, Te Hurika, which weighs 170kg. Before arriving in Nelson earlier this month, the exhibition has been on display in Canterbury, France and spent more than a year touring China. The welcoming piece for the exhibit

is a carving out of pakohe, also known as argillite. The piece is named Tahu matau māhē (Hook, Line and Sinker) and was created by Nelson artist Frank Wells. It acts as host – welcoming both the touring exhibit and visitors who come to see the collection. While the exhibition centres on pounamu originating from across New Zealand, Frank’s work acknowledges pakohe as a special taonga for the Nelson region. Frank says the piece was originally made for an art exhibition where it was then purchased by Ngati Kuia, who have loaned it for the duration of the exhibition. “Maori mythology and law have a lot to do with fishing and hooks, so I made this piece.” Nelson is one of the seven pounamu source areas in the South Island; the only place the precious stone is found. At the opening of the exhibition on Saturday morning, Mayor Rachel Reese said the collection was quite overwhelming. “Thank you to those that had the vision to bring this extraordinary exhibition to Nelson.” The collection will be on display at Nelson Provincial Museum until November 24.

Your Voice Back to the drawing board: In the 14 August issue of your paper we once again read of the problem Modellers Pond. Although I am getting up in years, I have a reasonably good memory. From the time I started work in Nelson in 1954 until a short time before he passed away in 1979, one of my workmates spent many hours working on projects with other members of the Nelson Modellers Club. On a weekend you could often see him giving children rides on the pond in the Navy Lark. Alongside the pond you would see a watervalve discharging water into the pond. One day during a discussion about the pond I was told that things were to change, the Nelson City Council who owned the pond were looking at setting up a pumping station in Centennial Road, which would pump stormwater into the pond. To keep the pond clean for mod-

el-boat use would mean using more water from the council water supply but the Modellers club members would be charged. To reduce the capacity of the pond, loads of hard fill were dumped in the pond. A few months ago, I was told that Nelmac were to trial an agitator system to keep the water circulating. During a live streaming of the morning session of the council meeting of 8 August, Nelson's mayor seemed to be more concerned in getting, before lunch break, a decision on which council department should be charged for the clean-up experiment charges than she was in finding a permanent solution. Nelson Matters It was revealed last week that the Government intends exempting itself from the new workplace safety laws and mining regulations put in place following the Pike River Mine tragedy. This is ironically to enable their re-entry project. This is a ridiculous situation where politics is overriding common sense. The Pike River Mine exploded on 19 November 2010. Two men in the 2.3 km tunnel to the mine known as ‘the drift’ survived. The remaining 29 men in the mine workings perished. The mine repeatedly exploded in the days that followed. A Royal Commission of Inquiry was instigated immediately, cost $10.5m and reported in Novem-

ber 2012. It concluded the mine was poorly designed and operated and that the Department of Labour failed to properly regulate mine safety. It specifically criticised the single means of exit. Our Government implemented its recommendations with a new Health and Safety at Work Act (2015), new mining regulations and the new agency, Worksafe NZ. These new laws rightly now require two means of exit from a mine and better ventilation. Prime Minister John Key promised to recover the men in the days following the tragedy. Everything possible was done to achieve this. Over $5m was spent pumping nitrogen into the

mine and putting men, robots and cameras into the drift. A comprehensive 800 page report in 2015 concluded recovery of the men could not be done within the new safety laws. It was heart breaking telling the families. They initially accepted the advice and requested the Government invest $12m in a new Paparoa and Pike 29 Great Walk. I got Cabinet agreement and it opens on 1 December this year. Winston Peters, Labour and the Greens cynically exploited the families’ disappointment, insisting the men’s remains could be safely recovered. Peters insisted he would go into the mine himself. Nelson coffee makers were put under the grind on Monday for the chance to be crowned Barista of the Year as part of the Nelson Hospitality Awards. Seven competitors were given just eight minutes to make four espressos and four

flat whites to serve to three judges. Before competitors started to physically make coffees, they first had to complete a written set of questions to test their general coffee knowledge. Judge Hayden Thompson, of Nelson’s Pomeroy’s Coffee, said they were looking for a total package which includes taste, presentation and

customer service. Melissa Foskett was the first competitor to take to the machine, followed by Kate Manley, Guy McCracken, Tania Kitto, Lara Coates, Clare Noble and Ashiah Pouwhare. Judge Emma Hennah of Sublime Coffee said timing and the way they worked in their space, along with wastage, were also important

aspects that they were looking for when determining a winner. Contestants remarked that it was “tricky” not working with their own machines and being in a different work environment. The winner will be announced at the Nelson Hospitality Awards 2019 on Monday September 9 at the Rutherford Hotel.

Local businesspeople enjoyed a day off work for a round of golf last week, all while raising more than $10,000 for the Nelson Cancer Society. A total of 21 teams took to the greens at the Nelson Golf Club last Thursday for the annual Cancer Society and ANZ Charity Golf Day. Cancer Society Nelson manager Michelle Hunt says though it was for charity, plenty of competitiveness was on show, as Sealord took out the Ambrose-style tournament. Following the on-course action, an auction was held with one punter booking themselves a ride on the Nelson Aviation College B77/800 simulator. Other items included a five-course meal at Hopgoods, Rainbow Ski Area passes and a flight on the Cable Bay Skywire. Michelle says players thoroughly enjoyed the day and it’s fantastic to have such incredible community support. “Even though we had a bit of rain on the last five holes, which is always the way.” The Cancer Society golf day is one of the major fundraising events the organisation holds during the year. Proceeds go towards its efforts in supporting those affected by cancer in the region. This includes enhancing patient and family support systems, improving community wellbeing through health promotion and providing information and resources for the local medical community and the general public.

I love Nelson, home to my family for 35 years. But in the three years I’ve represented you on Council, I’ve realised we can and must do better. It is unacceptable to have high rates rises while Council struggles to deliver projects on time or within budget. We need strong leadership to get the Council team working together for you and our growing region. I have the skills and experience needed. For 20 years I owned a local company providing financial advice to families and businesses, and chaired its NZ Board. I was appointed a Rata Foundation Director for eight years, established Warmer Healthier Homes Nelson/Tasman (insulating 1,500 homes), and helped re-home Nelson Netball to Saxton Field. I’ve coached the Nelson Giants and many local basketballers. I understand business, the community and our environmental challenges. I seek the privilege of working as your Mayor. For some time I’ve worked hard as an approachable Councillor and as a voluntary leader in many community organizations. I’m standing for Nelson City Council because I’m committed to championing the community, to deliver what Nelson needs to thrive, so that we can all be proud to call Nelson home. I was a Richmond Councillor for 9 years before shifting to Nelson (didn’t seek re-election 2016), a Nelson Airport director, proudly kicking off the new terminal project, on the Regional Transport Committee, chair of the Joint Councils’ Solid Waste committee and founded the Accessibility for All Forum. Currently I’m a Network Tasman trustee and independent chair of the Joint Councils’ Saxton Field Committee. Married with two sons, I work as a Community Development Advisor. This was Sage, my daughter’s blue heeler rescue dog I looked after until when ever. Sage was also my support team for my election campaign on day one. Day two, she bit someone and was put down. This means initiatives such as a more reliable and frequent public transport system, reducing peak hour traffic congestion, easing our housing crisis and improving facilities so we can be out there enjoying Nelson’s climate and surrounds. I have some good ideas about sweating our assets and want to prioritise getting a much better return on city investment.Phillipa and I have two young sons and I want to see more encouragement for innovative businesses so there are jobs here for our young people. As a businessman and a homeowner I don’t want to be paying higher rates, but there is a lot council could achieve by using its funds more wisely. Nelson needs a change in leadership style. With my nine years experience on council, I have the energy and commitment to help bring people together, on the Council and in the community, to make this the best place in New Zealand to live.

Meet the team sniffing out sanctuary predators Macca the fox terrier, along with handler Ange Newport, have recently spent five days scrambling all over the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary sniffing out any presence of stoats, weasels and ferrets. We catch up with Ange to learn about the process. How do you know the dog is onto something? Macca ‘indicates’, where he slows down, his tail starts to wag and his ears move forward, as he starts to work the scent. He’s highly motivated to find the source of the scent so I let him work the scent and we’ll follow it as far as it will take us. When Macca gives his indication, I note the location of this is a point of interest and report this back to the manager. The sanctuary team then lays traps in that area in response, to try and capture the animal present. It seems like a lot of land for not a lot of dog. We have to be quite strategic about the approach, bearing in mind the scent lasts up to 36 hours, depending on environmental factors, and the dog will generally pick up scent from around 25 metres. With active searching, it’s a moving target, and our aim is to cross paths with where it has been

and left its scent, over the last day or two. Why doesn’t Macca detect rats and other predators at the same time – surely that would save time and money? We train the dogs on specific scents – rodents, or mustelids, or feral cats for example - because the way of dealing with them is different and the people who will be following up with the trapping response need to know what they’re targeting, as different traps and lures are used to target the different animals. How do you train the dog? The first part of training focuses on good behaviour and obedience, working towards Interim certification, which is usually when the dog is 1014 months. After that we then have 6 months to train towards the full certification which tests target specification, obedience and work ethic. This is where the focus shifts to teaching the dog what you want them to find, and

all the other things they need to learn to ignore. How’s your Nelson sanctuary experience been? It’s a brilliant habitat for the species you’re trying to encourage here. Plus, it’s great working with established tracks and trapping lines that are well set. My ankles have really appreciated the great quality of your tracks so a shout out to your volunteer track cutters. What’s the hardest thing about the job? I’m not home very much, so it is hard to maintain a ‘home life’. Last year I would have been home collectively about three months out of the whole year, so you have to be ok with being away a lot. The dog can go a lot of places I can’t and sometimes vice versa– you have to be careful neither of you gets stuck. We work as a team, and have a very trusting relationship, and you get very good at gauging times, and your capability as a team.

Community benefits from funding The latest round of Community Investment Funding has been completed with 32 groups receiving a total of $71,393 from Nelson City Council. Council received 77 applications in total, with the grants allocated to the successful applicants ranging from $820 to $5,000 each. “The grants will contribute to a

wide range of social development projects in the community which include supporting emergency accommodation, the provision of art programmes for at-risk youth and contributing to the development of stories celebrating being Pasifika in Nelson,” Community Services Committee chair Gaile Noonan says.

Helping migrants navigate Nelson Kate Russell

While even the best of us can struggle with tax forms and job interviews, it can be almost impossible for new migrants and former refugees. That’s where Jenni Bancroft comes in. Last month, Jenni was appointed to a new role at the Victory Community Centre ‘community navigator’. Her job is to help migrants and ethnic communities around Nelson and Tasman connect to services such as Work and Income, IRD, health care, and help them with other key processes and situations in their settlement journey. She’ll even teach them the basics of making an appointment to view a rental property, filling out forms and writing a CV. “Red Cross helps them with these things for six to 12 months, but after then, some people still need help. These

things can be hard for us, so how are they supposed to make it happen?” says Jenni. “Migrants, mainly from Colombia and Myanmar, are either referred to me from schools or other agencies, or they can just simply show up.” The role is an initiative of three local community organisations - Victory Community Centre, Multicultural Nelson Tasman, and English Language Partners. It is being funded by Nelson City Council and the Rāta Foundation. Jenni, who came from a role at Multicultural Nelson Tasman, says there was a “gap” in the services being offered, with language barriers and cultural differences being the biggest hurdles to overcome. One migrant she has helped is Colombian mother of three, Evelyn Cabezas Caicedo - who refers to Jenni as “superwoman”. She moved here just over a year ago with a Spanish early

childhood qualification and approached Jenni for help with putting a proposal together. “I want to visit early childhood centres in Nelson and spend one hour a week teaching them Spanish, so Jenni has been helping me with typing my proposal and checking it for spelling,” says Evelyn. Jenni, says although she is still “finding her feet”, the best part of the job is seeing people learn how to do things independently. “I also love building relationships, hearing their stories and seeing their journeys.” The role is also being observed by other services and communities of the region and nationwide, as an innovative model of what could be a broader response to the facilitation of migrant settlement in New Zealand. Nelson’s budding baseball star jets off to USA, Wednesday, June 19: Nelson baseballer James Matthews had a rough introduction to international competition earlier this month. The 13-year-old travelled to Branson Missouri with a New Zealand side for the annual Cal Ripken World Series. The Kiwis lost three and won one of its pool games, progressing to the ‘iron’ or B bracket of the tournament. This is where the side picked up its second win against New England before bowing out in the semi-final to the Pacific Southwest. Mexico went on to win the World Series, defeating Hawaii 4-1 in the final.

Hilly work pays off for Emily Staff Reporter When Emily Olthof ’s mum suggested she take up a paper run as the 10-yearold’s first job, she was a little surprised. But more than a year and a half into the gig, mother

Helen is proud that her daughter has stuck with it. “It’s a bit hilly, so I’m really impressed.” Emily delivers the Nelson Weekly to Songer St and the Ridgeway and has just been selected as the newspaper’s deliverer of the month.

“It’s a little bit hard,” she admits. “But when you do it for longer it gets easier.” However, she is enjoying the extra money in her back pocket. Emily is hoping to buy a return ticket to Auckland to visit her eldest brother. “It will be nice to visit him.”

Weekly delivery manager Karl Hadfield says that Emily is a fantastic worker and is a worthy recipient of the award, which includes a double pass to State Cinema. It’s just in time, too. This week is Emily’s birthday.

Nelson City Brass triumphant, Wednesday, July 17: Following their recent success winning the B Grade at this year’s New Zealand Brass Band Championships, which were held in Hamilton last month, Nelson City Brass have been promoted to the A grade by the Brass Band Association of New Zealand. Secretary Wayne Jennens called it a “remarkable achievement” for a band which only five years ago was at the bottom of the C Grade. Three national titles in four years have made Nelson City Brass one of the fastest rising musical ensembles in the country.

Students make it up as they go along, Wednesday, July 31: Secondary students from around the region took the stage at the Suter earlier this month for the regional theatresports finals. Garin College won the senior grade – it was the first time they have claimed the title in 14 years. Golden Bay High School took out the junior section. Both teams will compete in the national finals in Christchurch on September 22.

Although acting is in his blood, nine-year-old Ryder McMeeken can’t help but feel a tad nervous about his next role. The Hampden Street School student has been chosen to perform in the award-winning and critically-acclaimed A Doll’s House at the Theatre Royal on 10 September. Written by Emily Perkins and directed by Katherine McRae, the modern ‘Kiwi’ adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen classic cleverly exposes the power and gender dynamics within a marriage. The three-show tour will also be visiting Hamilton and Dunedin, but Ryder will be playing the role of Billy in the

Nelson show only. “I’ve been in two school productions, but I’ve never done anything like this before,” he says. The auditions were held two months ago, and Ryder was up against six other boys from the region. “I found out a few days later. My reaction was ‘surprised and scared’.” Ryder will only get three rehearsals with the Wellingtonbased cast that also includes Westside’s Sophie Hambleton who plays Nora, Simon Leary, Kali Kopae, Peter McCauley, Francis Biggs, and 10-year-old Sophie Fulton who plays Billy’s twin sister. Now based in Auckland, former Nelson Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster returns next month along with pianist Lisa Chou to perform NCMA’s last Celebration Series concert of the year. Yid Ee came to Nelson to take

up the position of Concertmaster of the Nelson Symphony Orchestra in 1995 when the orchestra was lucky to attract a Port Nelson sponsorship. Yid Ee and Lisa will perform a programme of music for violin and piano. The event will be on Sunday, September 8 at 3.30pm, with tickets $30 + service fee and available at ticketdirect.co.nz

American/Canadian and runs a drama school in Nelson. She says this is an “amazing opportunity” for Ryder. “We were on holiday in the USA when we heard about it. They were looking for an eight or nineyear-old boy, he was keen, so we signed him up for an audition.” Just like most other nine-yearolds, Ryder also enjoys playing sports and video games but says he is looking forward to the experience - and of course his family and schoolteacher are looking forward to seeing him up on stage. “I’m excited and nervous,” he says. Referees sub-association’s involvement in rugby began in 1870 when Nelson College took on Nelson Football Club in New Zealand’s first ever competitive rugby game. Since then, there have been many excellent referees over the years, some of which have officiated on a national and international level. Today, our region’s referees give up their Saturday’s so the players, coaches and parents can all enjoy theirs. When the whistle blows, and the ball is kicked, they are right in the thick of it, helping to grow the game. In his role as the Referee Education Office for the Tasman Rugby Union, Dave Paterson is keen to continue to build on the positivity and respect for referees he believes exists in our region. “We’re relatively lucky here, but in some regions, referees have been

physically assaulted this year, but fortunately this hasn’t happened in Tasman; there’s sometime a bit of a ‘verbal spray,’ but that’s all.” Education and rugby law Alongside referees’ coaches, Dave holds regular training nights for referees and he’s also making himself available to go into schools and clubs to help them understand rugby law. “We’re all passionate, and when decisions go against our team or the team we’re supporting, some people don’t react that positively. But let’s face it – referees at club level are all volunteers doing their very best but even the best refs in the world makes mistakes.” ‘We’re only human,’ after all… “People need to understand that referees are as much a part of the game as the players

them, there wouldn’t be a game.” Dave says referees have to make calls and it’s just how they see it at the time.

Trained, competent refs Wanderer’s Rugby Club Director of Sports, Marty Davis says he’s never witnessed a game in Nelson where he thinks the referees are not as competent as the players. “The refs are at the same level and grading as the players so it’s illogical to expect to get international referees when playing at a low level.” Marty says referees train to fulfil their roles and it’s beholding on everybody to respect that. “People who watch television think they understand what’s going on, but it doesn’t match the reality of the laws. They’ll make comments from the side lines which becomes infectious – someone says something out of line, then someone tends to pick up

questioned by over-zealous spectators. “We have the odd isolated verbal, but overall the atmosphere here is pretty positive,” says Dave. He encourages people of all ages, who are fit, who love

We want people to understand that referees, players and coaches are all in this together – it’s a partnership. The Tasman Mako are doing fantastically well because they are really focussed on the game. They’re not worried about the referees; they just get stuck in and get the job done. If securing five points while exploring their depth of talent was Tasman’s objective at Lansdowne Park on Saturday, the afternoon was an unqualified success. Not only did they over-run the Manawatu Turbos 64-3, they also showed that there is a rich vein of ability running right through the squad, enough to cover the upsand-downs of an NPC season. Players such as hooker Hugh Roach, flanker Jacob Norris, midfielder Tim O’Malley, wingers Tima Faingaanuku and Jamie Spowart were given a starting opportunity and seized their moment eagerly. Frontrowers Sam Moli and Isaac Salmon, new halfback Uchida Keisuke, plus utility back Fetuli Paea grabbed big minutes off the bench, their input providing the second half momentum that saw five more tries added to the home side’s tally. Obviously, we have our fingers crossed that the boys make those teams, we’ll celebrate any success we get with any of our boys making those [World Cup] squads.” Sunday’s comprehensive victory also underlined the growing reputation of Lansdowne Park as an increasingly tough venue to beat the home side at. Tasman have now won nine in a row in Blenheim since losing to Auckland in September 2015, creating something of a “Fortress Mako” in the eastern side of the region. Netball: Nelson will play host to the 57th annual South Island Secondary Schools tournament next week. The tournament will see 80 teams competing across three grades over the three-day event. Players will also be treated to an appearance by three World Cup winning Silver Ferns. Games will run from 9am4pm on Monday and Tuesday with the A grade final at Nelson College for Girls on Wednesday at 3.15pm.

Jonty Dine Bailey Murdoch’s parents were dumbfounded when he emerged from his bedroom and declared that he was now a professional gamer. The 20-year-old says he simply stumbled upon the career. After suffering a season ending shoulder injury playing for the Waimea College 1st XV, Bailey was forced to sit on the sidelines for six months. He says he gained weight and lost motivation. Running: Celebrating its 25th Anniversary on Saturday is The Dun Run with 325 trail runners heading into “the backwoods of Nelson” and onto its alpine mineral belt. Nelson College’s superb season isn’t over yet after winning the UC Championship in a pulsating final against Christchurch Boys High School on Saturday. Nelson trailed by eight points inside the first minute of the second half, but a dominant twenty-minute period for the hosts clinched its first title in 13 years. Skipper, man of the match, and

player of the tournament, Anton Segner, scored two crucial tries to seal the 35-31 victory. While standing under their own posts and momentum firmly with the visitors, Nelson’s captain went about bringing his side back in the contest. “When we were down, I tried to keep the boys as calm and collected as possible. I’ve said it a lot, but

our problem at the time was just the fact we didn’t have any ball and you can’t win a rugby game without a rugby ball.” His words helped inspire a remarkable comeback as Nelson produced 24 unanswered points to claim the title. Anton will now lead his side into the South Island final against Otago Boys.

“We were not just playing for the school, but the whole city of Nelson,” Segner says. He says his side showed incredible resilience to stage a comeback on the high-pressure stage, but the job isn’t over yet. “Very excited about the win but also excited to get back to work for this Saturday.” Anton says a big focus for them

Nelson Netball’s most storied rivalry will write another chapter next week when the two sides meet in a third consecutive premier final. Prices Ahurei and Jacks OPD each booked berths in the final after seeing off their semi-final opponents in contrasting styles at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night. Prices captain Danya Whiting says her side will be confident coming up against rivals Jacks, after previously toppling the side in round three. “When we met them last, I just wanted to get close because we hadn’t all season. So, the win was a bonus, now we just have to believe we can do it.” Meanwhile, Jacks skipper Jess Drummond says her team is keen to avenge its extra time loss in the final last season. “It still hurts, we want revenge.” Jess says her side is peaking at the right time following its 67-35 demolition of Stoke NBS in the semi-final. “It was the first consistent 60 minutes we have put on the court this season.” The veteran centre says they know Prices will be a formidable opponent as the only side to have beaten Jacks all season. She says the key to victory on Saturday will be to be patient and play smart netball. “We need to look after the ball, we

know they have a great defensive end so we need to stay composed and give the right options on attack.” She says, after the final went into double overtime last year with Prices staging a late comeback, Jacks needs to be consistent throughout the four quarters. “The last five minutes is just as important as every other minute.” Prices will look to claim back-toback titles after a hard fought 43-41 semi-final win over Richmond 45. Up 10 goals after three quarters, Prices gave Richmond a late sniff at victory but saw off the challenge thanks, in large part, to its superb defensive duo of Holly Chandler and skipper Dayna.
