A holiday message from the Mayor Tēnā koutou e te whānau o Whakatū, me ngā manuhiri kua mauru mai I hope you enjoy a relaxing Christmas Day and are looking forward to catching up with friends and whānau. We all deserve some time to rest and reconnect after Covid-19 delivered a year we will never forget. I want to extend a huge thank you to all of you who are working over the traditional holiday break, your mahi to keep the region running is very much appreciated. And for those of us who are still separated from family overseas – we’ll get through this! There is no question it has been a challenging year with significant financial burdens placed on many, but there is no doubt we have also seen the best of us - true grit, resilience and community spirit. From medical staff who protected our health, Council staff and contractors who kept our city running, to supermarket staff who kept us fed, and every person who looked out for the vulnerable – this communitywide effort showed what we achieve when we work together. That spirit continues as we rebuild our economy. Economic forecasts were grim, but the data now is more promising. That’s testament not just to the way New
Zealand dealt with Covid-19, but the dedication and ingenuity of those that took the opportunity to adapt and thrive under the new normal, particularly our business community. We learned to do things differently and celebrated Matariki and the Virtual Heritage Festival online. Our collaborative recovery-focused
Project Kōkiri is well underway, bringing in Government investment, business innovation and employment. As spring arrived we launched our ‘We’ve Got This!’ campaign and again welcomed visitors to our region as Kiwis discovered new places and regulars returned. In November, Nelson Tasman turned out to watch the
Black Ferns play at Trafalgar Park, and it was an honour to present the Key to the City to these women World Champions. Then Tasman Mako did us proud securing back-to-back victories in the Mitre 10 Cup - #FinzUp! Now summer’s here, preparations for the Bay Dreams music festival on January 5 are almost complete and accommodation is filling up as Kiwis arrive for a dose of Nelson goodness – sun, sea, fresh fish, fruit, wine, craft beer, arts and artisans, outdoor adventure, or just a lazy day in the hammock. Looking ahead, the transfer of community housing to Kāinga Ora will generate a $12m fund that will allow us to assist with new social and affordable housing projects over the coming years. The need for safe, warm, affordable homes is critical to our wellbeing, and this fund represents an opportunity to make a real difference. Consideration of others is the secret to New Zealand’s continued COVID-19 success; it’s a trait I believe we should hold fast over the year to come. A holiday message from the local St Johns
Christmas and New Year’s Eve is an incredibly busy time for St John Ambulance staff who say it is an important reminder to look out for yourself and others. St John Nelson Bays territory manager Anne-Maree Harris says the organisation responds to around 1000 emergency incidents across New Zealand on Christmas Day with the most common callouts being breathing problems, chest pain and assaults. Calls also triple between 10pm and 2am on New Year’s Eve, with nearly 35 per cent of calls on New Year’s Eve being alcohol related. The most common incidents we see over and over during this holiday period are assaults and motor vehicle crashes. Anne-Maree says that Christmas can also be a stressful time for many people, especially if they are on their own or finances are an issue. “Physical and mental health problems can increase over this time and it is important to check on those who may be alone or vulnerable.”

Two new displays at Broadgreen Historic House and Isel House are keeping children busy this summer. Visit A Traditional Christmas at Broadgreen to enjoy a 19th century family Christmas, learn about Christmas traditions, stir the Plum Pudding and be enthralled by the stunning 19th century costumes on display. Activities for children include ‘Find the Mouse in the House’, dress ups and crafts in ‘The Box Room’, and outdoor games. Those with sharp eyes might spot Santa trying to make a getaway. There is a beautiful Victorian Rocking horse for children to ride. Enter the competition to name it.
Broadgreen is open daily, 10.30am – 4.30pm (except Christmas Day). Free for locals. Not far away, at Isel House, The Tiny Room is an enchanting new space for children, where they can journey into the magical world of fairies, pixies and childhood, with a vintage and old world feel. Explore Isel House, learn about one of Nelson’s early environmental advocates and pioneering 19th century farmer James Marsden, discover stunning antique furniture, paintings and elaborate ceramic collections, or wander through majestic park-like gardens. Situated deep in the Wairoa Valley, 'The Gorge’ mountain-bike park is owned and operated by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club and is home to well over 70km of hand-built mountain bike trails that run through a lush native and beech forest environment. The trails at The Gorge are sublime and have to be experienced to be fully
appreciated. The grades run from 3 to 6 and there is more riding than anyone can handle in a day. You decide where to go, how fast or slow you want to ride, when you want to stop, and which shuttle pick-up point will work best for you. You must book a shuttle seat in advance so as not to miss out. The Gorge is more than just mountainbiking with
two fantastic, comfortable and scenic accommodation options available. You can either stay before and/ or after riding, or you can simply enjoy a getaway with comfort in the mountain tops to chill out for a few days.
