That study said, before adding another road, the city needed to make intersection improvements, add peak hour clear ways on parts of Waimea Rd, Tahunanui Dr and Annesbrook Dr and make improvements to public transport as well as improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. NZTA said these should be completed by 2020. However, the previous study acknowledged that as Nelson continues to grow and the demands on its transport system increase, a longer-term solution will also be required. It recommended that a

new route should be constructed in the early 2030s, and that this route should be protected while further investigations are undertaken. Mike says this new detailed business case was likely to take about 18 months. However, fellow Nelson city councillor Matt Lawrey isn’t sure why the business case is needed at all. “We already know that NZTA is recommending we make long overdue improvements to our existing network before we build any more new roads. The really tragic bit is that prior to this investigation that started back in 2015, we had two other major studies come to the same conclusion.” Local MP Nick Smith says the Southern Link is “the only practical long-term solution to Nel-
son’s increasing transport problems to the port and city”. “I worry that we are spending so much on investigation that we risk paralysis by analysis.” Nick says he is also concerned that the cuts by the government to investment in new state highways from $1500 million to $400 million a year. The business case will also look to better link the land transport network with Port Nelson, ensure there are safe and accessible walking and cycling facilities, and review public transport improvements to maximise the efficiency of the existing network. Nick says he is a “big fan” of a dedicated walkway and cycleway around Rocks Road “but the only way it is viable is to relocate the State Highway with the Southern Link project”. Labour’s 2017 Nelson candidate
Rachel Boyack also welcomes the investment to the region and says that she “supports the investigation continuing through the detailed business case as the process allows the public and community to contribute their ideas and solutions for easing congestion in Nelson city”. “We need a resilient Rocks Rd that can service the port and productive land in Tasman. I am particularly pleased to see support for public transport initiatives in Nelson and Tasman, as a more cost-effective way of easing congestion at peak times.” When Greens MP and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter last visited Nelson she said: “One thing I can tell you about the Southern Link is that it doesn’t deliver on any of the new Government’s objectives for transport.”

Kate Russell It was mooted to be a family destination in the heart of Nelson, a significant public space and a major drawcard for our struggling city centre. So, what ever happened to the proposed playground for Rutherford Park? Back in 2015, Nelson City Council set aside $600,000 for a destination playground for Rutherford Park in its longterm plan - with the hope of securing extra partnership funding on top of that. They labelled the project as a “priority” and approved a business plan that stated it would be “an attraction that people are willing to spend time at, therefore increasing their time in the CBD”. But three years on and there is no sign of a city playground. What’s happened to it? According to Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese, the project hasn’t been dropped. But it’s changed. She says the money that had been allocated in earlier long-term plans was “insufficient” to build a destination playground. Focus also turned to higher priorities like getting the Tra-

Destination playgrounds differ from traditional playgrounds in that they offer creative equipment designed to be fun and challenging. Examples include the Margaret Mahy playground in Christchurch’s CBD. Rachel says, in the latest longterm plan, a higher budget was requested and funding has been increased to about $1.4m. “The Margaret Mahy playground cost $3m for the playground itself, so we would still be looking for grant or partnership funds to get to that
scale,” she says. Scoping for the playground is included for this financial year, involving identifying partners and looking at whether it could fit in with the riverside precinct plans and library redevelopment. Former Nelson city councillor Pete Rainey was a firm believer in the project – and still is. “Revitalising the CBD is of real concern for many people and, given the experience of visiting the Margaret May playground, it is obvious this kind of development would be a huge attraction and reason for kids, parents and grandparents to come into Nelson city.”

NEWS Weekly turns 8: Today the Nelson Weekly turns eight years old. The locally owned and operated newspaper has since grown to be the region’s highest circulating newspaper, going to 21,500 homes and businesses every week. The company that owns the Weekly has also expanded in recent years to include the Nelson App and Nelson Magazine. Nelson bars obey the booze law: Police are pleased with the results of an undercover alcohol operation in Nelson. The joint controlledpurchase operation focused on the sale of alcohol to minors and was run by police, district licencing agencies and public health on August 17 and 24. Of the forty-seven onand off-licensed premises in the Nelson and Tasman areas that were visited by 16-year-old volunteers, only one business sold alcohol to these young people. Nelson Bays alcohol harm prevention officer, sergeant Kyle Bruning says these operations are carried out to check processes and ensure compliance with the law by licensed premises and they will continue to carry out more in the coming months.

Record asking prices in Nelson: Asking prices for houses in Nelson have hit a new record, increasing to $650,293, according to recent figures from realestate.co.nz. This is a 4.4 per cent increase compared to the previous month. Eleven of the country’s 19 regions hit record high average asking prices in August. New listings in the region are down 12.2 per cent to 144 when compared to July. Nationally, total stock levels in August stood at 21,207 which is down 1.6 per cent on August 2017 and the number of new listings is almost static, an increase of 0.1 per cent compared to August 2017.

New Theatre Royal manger Hal Martin has walked off the job after only being in the position for three months. Chair of the Nelson Historic Theatre Trust, Mark Christensen, confirmed Hal’s resignation last week. “I can confirm that Hal has resigned - he left the Theatre on 17
August. Personal reasons, I understand,” he told Nelson Weekly. It is understood that the surprise departure has left the small but dedicated theatre team scrambling to fill the gaps. Mark says they are conducting a review of operations before they move forward in finding a replacement. Hal started the job in May, taking over from former manager Janice Marthen. was new to Nelson. In an interview with the Weekly in July, he said was keen to come back to New Zealand after working in Australia for nine years. His previous job titles include the general manager of Arts Margaret River, manager of the Griffith (NSW) Regional Theatre and Art Gallery and manager of the Uxbridge Creative Centre in Auckland. Hal said he was “starting a bit from scratch in terms of under-
standing the New Zealand theatre scene” but had a vision to bring in more travelling shows to Nelson as well as involving seniors and young people more in the theatre. The job description from February highlighted that the manager’s role was expansive, requiring overseeing all administrative, marketing, production and financial functions of the theatre, as well as an enthusiastic attraction and/or understanding of the Nelson performing arts community.

When Ruth Bagnall first saw the large truck crashed through the Tahunanui Tennis Club’s fence her first reaction was shock. “We were a bit concerned,” the club committee member says. Two weeks ago, a large truck towing two trailers rear-ended a stationary parked truck on SH6. It rammed through the tennis club fence and onto its courts. The stationary truck was parked up and loaded with batteries for scrap. The contents of this truck, batteries and acid, spilled all over the road and was blocked.
The larger truck remained there for some time while crews cleared the scene and ensured that no battery acid had leached into nearby waterways. While one of the courts has been cleared, the other is still “munted,” says Ruth. She says the club members expressed concern over the woman who was driving the truck, who was later discharged from Nelson Hospital. “We were pleased that the incident was not more serious.” However, the crash is not stopping the club from getting on with its business of playing the game that its 120 members love. “The show must go on,” says Ruth.

So, this Saturday, the tennis club is hosting an open day at 1pm where anybody can come down and try out its facilities, have some afternoon tea and meet its friendly club members. Ruth says the club had planned on re-doing some of the courts anyway and the damage caused by the truck would be fixed. However, it means that there will be a delay before they are all operational. It’s not the first time that the area has faced destruction. In 2016, a 15-year-old boy crashed through a fence and into the Bowls Tahuna club. Ruth hopes that all the courts will be up and running before the club season started in October, at the start of summer.
In the 1950s and 1960s, a lot of development occurred to electrify the Tasman area. Power authorities of the time built about 1200km of new high voltage power lines to bring electricity to many people who had never had it before. Sixty or so years later, it’s time to replace some of these wires in order to keep our network safe. The ones we are replacing are made from light-gauge copper, which, like anything, can wear out over time – mostly through a process called annealing that can cause them to become brittle. Replacing wires is a difficult job that involves the use of heavy machinery and crews of line workers spread over multiple work sites. This makes it unsafe to do the work at night time. It also involves working on long spans of line, which means large numbers of people may be affected and more than one planned temporary power outage may be required to complete each job. Unfortunately some consumers will have their power interrupted more often than they are used to while we replace the wires. Sometimes we will be able to use one of our large generators to keep the power on but most of the time this won’t be possible because of the way the network is built.

Most weekends and afternoons you will find the young coffee connoisseur grinding away at his parent’s café, learning the art of the perfect 'cup of joe'. Zeb’s persistence paid off, the Nelson College student being recently named the best secondary school barista in the country at the New Zealand Chefs association competition on August 14. In a high-pressure situation, students were asked to produce half a dozen cups of coffee. Competitors were allowed five minutes to ‘season’ the espresso machine and then a further 20 minutes to create their coffee. The budding baristas then had to make two single shot espressos, two double shot lattes and two single shot flat whites.
The year 12 student says once he got into his rhythm, things flowed. “I was real nervous going up to it but once I got underway I had just practiced the routine so many times it was all quite natural, and all went pretty smoothly.” Zeb says his teacher, Quinton Gately, has been hugely influential and deserves credit for the win. “He got me onto the competition and he and his wife did a lot of training with me.” The 17-year-old says his love for coffee came from spending many hours at his family-owned coffee shop, Sublime and previously Java Hut in Mapua. “Working there over summer, I just got hooked.” Zeb says his personal poison is a Piccolo with chocolate on top. When asked what makes the perfect coffee, Zeb simply says as long as it looks good and tastes good.
Airways NZ's new $6 million air traffic control tower was opened on Thursday at Nelson Airport. The six-level, 22 metre high tower will support more than 46,000 flights in and out of Nelson every year. Airways NZ chief executive Graeme Sumner says the tower is a significant investment that will help to enable the future growth of local aviation and tourism. "It’s a facility fit for one of New Zealand’s busiest regional aerodromes and has been designed to underpin Nelson Airport’s growth with continued safe and efficient air traffic services.” Located to the east of the new airport terminal, the tower will give air traffic controllers an optimal view of the airfield. Local contractors Gibbons Construction started work on the tower in December 2016 and have delivered the project both on time, and

It has been built to meet complete modern building standards and brings an end to air traffic control services being located on top of the terminal building where a control cab has sat since 1974. The tower could be one of the last to open in the country, as Airways looks ahead to digital tower technology, which could be launched in Inver-
cargill in 2020. Nelson Airport chief executive Rob Evans says the new tower will provide greater resilience as the airport continues to grow with the region into the future. Your Voice Multi-level carpark for Nelson? Under the Heading " Multi-level carpark for Nelson? ", Nelson Weekly 28 August, we read that the Nelson City Council are mulling over the need for an additional carpark. This subject has been discussed by various councils for many years and now the CBD has a number of empty shops, the subject is again being discussed. Rather than waste time on this subject, the Mayor and Councillors should be more interested in talking with Gibbons Construction owners about what their plans are for the future of the Old Bulk store site in Vanguard Street and the Nelson Mail building. More retail outlets in Vanguard St in close proximity to the Warehouse and Countdown in St Vincent St may mean more empty shops in the actual CBD. Living in Tahunanui, I find it more convenient to have my shopping done in Richmond. A Smithson

look at other options without actually asking the public. Shows a real sense of community. Many of the public want hospital carparking fixed, and a new carpark in Nelson for LONG TERM parking. This way, the people who work in the city or go to NMIT can actually park for a full day without needing to leave home 40 minutes earlier to find a park or having to park a half hour walk away. Because God knows buses don’t start or finish the same hours as people work. Make it easy - $1.50 per hour, full day $7 and student prices of $5 for a full day. Have terms and conditions for a full day, like if you have to leave the carpark, there is no refund on how much you’ve paid (just like in Buxtons) and that you have to pay to get back in again. Kayla Jones Hell yes. We are in desperate need of more parking. Use the Montgomery carpark for it and move the Saturday market into main street on a Saturday morning. Heaps of

are environmental and economic. It will enable the minimum flows in summer in the Waimea River to be lifted five-fold and fully meet the national standards for water quality. It will also enable another 1200 ha of horticulture creating more wealth and jobs. It will help support the growth of housing on the Waimea Plains where the population has doubled from 10,000 to 20,000 in my time as MP. It will also make our region more resilient to climate change. The difficulty with big infrastructure projects is how to fairly share the costs. There is
no magic formula, but they are much less when we do it together. The cost of dam storage is $8 per cubic metre. Farm storage ponds cost $50 per cubic metre and home stormwater storage tanks cost $250 per cubic metre. We are all better off if we work together on a solution. The claims ratepayers are subsidising irrigators are false. Waimea Irrigators are putting up over $40m. The real issue is how to fund the share of the dam being used to increase summer flows and improve river health. We all want cleaner rivers and we all need to help fund this.

The costs to homeowners of an average of $150 a year in Richmond and Brightwater and $30 a year in Motueka and Golden Bay is not excessive for a clean river and secure water supply. Councillors claiming this cost will force people to sell up their homes are not credible. I do cringe when the Green Party says the region needs to switch to different crops. Hops, grapes, apples and berryfruit are part of Nelson’s identity as well as the foundations of our economy. I am not prepared to sacrifice them on some sort of ideological green altar. Nelson

These free buses will stop at all the usual bus stops on Routes 1 and 2 so just walk to your local bus stop or park close to the bus route.

Broadgreen Historic House exhibition marks 125 years of women’s suffrage Have you ever wondered what life was like in 1893, when New Zealand women won the right to vote? The latest exhibition at Broadgreen Historic House, The Suffragists at Home gives Nelsonians an opportunity to step back in time and take a closer look at life inside a New Zealand house 125 years ago. On 19 September 1893, after submitting a petition with nearly 32,000 signatures, New Zealand became the first self-governing country to grant women the vote. Suffragists at Home: Stitching and styles for a cause provides visitors with the chance to see women’s stitched crafts, clothing and accessories used in the quest to help New Zealand women get the vote. The exhibition took five months to prepare, with some intricate clothing pieces taking 10 hours each to make. Suffragists at Home provides the opportunity to gain a rare insight into life in 1893.
Chair of the Community Services Committee Gaile Noonan says it is important that we don’t take things like the right to vote for granted. “Life was hard for women in the past, and yet they still had the courage to pursue the women’s vote. We should be encouraging all women to exercise their hard-won right to vote,” says Councillor Noonan. “I can imagine the conversations they were having when they were stitching, I would love to have been a fly on the wall to listen to all their radical plans.”

Nelson’s rugby highlights As the city prepares to host its first ever All Blacks test this Saturday night, Nelson Weekly sports reporter Jonty Dine takes a look back on some of the most significant rugby moments to occur in the birthplace of the game in New Zealand. 1870 - Rugby in NZ is born: The first ever recorded game of rugby in New Zealand took place on May 14, 1870, between a Nelson College side and the Nelson Football Club at the Botanics in Nelson. 1905 - City’s first All Black: In total, 13 All Blacks were born in Nelson, the first of whom was first five William Smith who

Rugby Union was founded after Nelson merged with Golden-Bay Motueka. Nelson had previously played as a standalone club since 1885. 1981- City hosts Springboks: During the infamous Springbok tour ’81, the South Africans enjoyed their biggest win when they came to Nelson on August 22. The Springboks demolished Nelson Bays 83-0. 1991- Shield fever hits Nelson: While the Nelson union has never held the shield, the city did get a glimpse of the log o’ wood
when Auckland brought the shield to town during its historic tenure which included 61 defences. Nelson went down 76-0 to the All Black-laden Aucklanders, their sixth unsuccessful challenge for provincial rugby’s most prestigious prize. 1999 - Nelson Bays wins second division: Having won the third division in 1992, a resurgent Nelson Bays won the second division seven years later, defeating Bay of Plenty 14-13 at Trafalgar Park. The side featured current Nelson College coach Warren Johnston, and the union’s highest point scorer, Mark Milne. 2006 - Tasman Mako form: The
2011 - Nelson hosts first test match: While the All Blacks have yet to play in Nelson, the city did host three test matches during the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Italy vs Russia, Italy vs USA and Australia vs Russia all took place at Trafalgar Park. 2013- Mako earn promotion: It didn’t take long for the Mako to establish itself as a provincial powerhouse, earning promotion to the premier competition after taking out the championship just seven years after inception. Tasman edged Hawke’s bay 26-25 in a thrilling final at Trafalgar. 2018- Inaugural All Blacks test: This Saturday will mark the biggest rugby event in the region’s history. The All Blacks will debut in the city more than 150 years after the game was first played in Nelson. The three time-world champions will host Argentina at Trafalgar Park.

Nelson shops are challenging each other to see who can make their outlet the most All Blacks-mad place in the city. As part of a promotion run by Uniquely Nelson, shops are encouraged to do whatever
they can to get into the spirit of Saturday’s event. “Jerseys, balloons, scones on the day – it’s an open book to showcase creativity and spark up Nelson,” says Uniquely Nelson’s Simon Duffey.
He hopes to see as many people as possible doing whatever they can to make the CBD as All Blacksproud as possible. “And the best shop will win a double pass to the match.” Some have already started
their window dressing with flags and bunting ahead of Friday’s judging. “There is so much you can do with not much effort,” says Simon. “So, it will be great to see what our shops can come up with.”
Few All Black tickets remaining Jonty Dine With just a few days until the All Blacks play in Nelson for the first time in over a hundred years, fans don’t have long to snap up their tickets for the biggest show in town. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says there are still a couple of hundred tickets still available for the All Blacks test against Argentina on September 8. “This is a one-off opportunity where we can show the rest of the country that we deserve this All Black test and that we should have many more but if we don’t get a full stadium, we won’t get another one.” He says it’s a frustration as he would have thought with an event of this size and magnitude that Nelsonians would have jumped at it and snapped the tickets up. “They are a very reasonable price and you are not having to pay for accommodation or travel.” The best rugby team in the world against the RWC semi-finalists, it’s going to be one hell of a game. Businessmen get behind All Blacks Jonty Dine
When the All Blacks run on to Trafalgar Park for the first time this Saturday night, it will be the culmination of a lot of work behind the scenes from a number of locals. The test match was backed by private investors including car salesman Shane Drummond, logging contractor Mike Fraser and logging marketer Paul Jensen, who were the key in securing the test. Former Tasman Rugby Union president Shane Drummond says it was a great project to get behind for the community. “There are a lot of people in Nelson who have never seen a test match.” Mike says, being so passionate about the game, it was a no -brainer to get involved. “I have played and coached a lot of rugby in the region, so when Shane (Drummond) rang me and told us about the proposal and I didn’t hesitate to support him.” Mike says he knew Shane would do his homework and make it work. “We also had confidence in Nelson that they would come to the game.”

He says the test has been 18 months of behind the scenes work. “To be part of that was pretty exciting, it was an easy decision.” Mike is backing the men in black to win big on Saturday. “I was talking to Hansen this morning who reckons he is going to play his top team, so I think it will be a good win for the All Blacks, 35-10.”
Paul says he has taken on a support role as he wanted to help promote rugby in Nelson. “I am heavily involved in rugby myself, and so jumped at the chance to bring a test to the city,” he says. He says he is particularly looking forward to bringing lots of friends and family along to the game. “There will be a lot of boys heading along to their first
test match which will be very special. “When we played for Nelson Bays we played in front of maybe a thousand people so it’s a pretty historic time for Nelson and we are just really excited to be a part of it all.” Paul says it was fantastic to see a number of All Blacks out in the community on Sunday. “The kids are just pumped about it, one of my friends’ sons will be carrying the flag out onto the paddock which is pretty awesome, It’s just great for the whole community.”
With 21,000 rugby fans set to descend on the city this Saturday, organisers are urging punters to be at the ground as early as possible to avoid missing any action. Tasman Rugby Union commercial and marketing manager Les Edwards says the earlier fans arrive after gates open at 5.30pm, the better their match experience will be. “What we have built is a pop-up test stadium for 21,000 fans who we must get through three gates. That is not going to be easy without people understanding that this is not a small event.” Les stresses that this is unlike a Mako match where fans tend to rock up at 7.15pm, park the car and stroll on in to Trafalgar. “There will be bag checks and security, so people need to be prepared to get to the ground in time.” Les says fans certainly won’t be bored when they get into the park. “What they can do is get in, get some food and drink, get to their seats, watch the teams warm up, see the helicopter bring in the match ball, listen to the anthems, watch the haka and be well and truly settled for kick off.” With gates set to open at 5.30pm, Les recommends this time to be at the surrounds at Trafalgar Park, “If you try leaving town at 7pm, you are going to be outside and miss all that magic stuff.”
All Blacks happy to be in Nelson Jonty Dine The All Blacks say they are loving their time in Nelson as the world’s greatest rugby team prepare to play in the city for the first time. Brodie Retallick and Owen Franks fronted media at the Rutherford Hotel conference room on Monday afternoon. The test is a homecoming of sorts for Motueka man Franks, who says childhood trips to Nelson were like visiting the “big smoke.” “Nan would take us to the movies, which was a real treat.” This will be Franks’ first playing appearance in the city since 2011. “It was just after the earthquake and Pike River, so it was quite emotional, but I always enjoy coming here.” Franks says he has a few family members and friends coming to Saturday’s game and planned to visit Motueka tomorrow. He says Nelson has an incredibly laid-back feel. “It’s like you’re in a different country, it’s really relaxed.” Franks says he is looking forward to the physical battle with the
Pumas. “They take a lot of pride in their set piece, you can never underestimate them.” Retallick says the All Blacks will back their pace to nullify the threat of Argentina’s “big men.” Regarded as the greatest lock currently playing international rugby, Retallick brushed off his recent comparisons to Australian locking legend John Eales following his outstanding performance against the Wallabies in Sydney two weeks ago. “It was one performance, I don’t think it was perfect, often individuals get those accolades but it’s the result of hard work from the team.” He says he is always looking to improve his game. “I’m here to be Brodie Retallick.” The towering lock says he has been enjoying getting out in the streets and greeting the local fans. “We are pretty lucky to play in the big cities quite often but it’s great when you come to places like Nelson, people at the airport say hey to you, everyone is excited to have the All Blacks here.”

Running for students’ lives Jonty Dine Nelson College boys are preparing to run for a day and night to support their fellow teens suffering in silence. Chief organiser and head of student council Latai Rassmussen says the fourth annual runathon fundraiser is about raising awareness and funds for a worthy cause. “We chose the Mental Health Foundation as our charity for the year, we have had mufti days and that money will be combined with the runathon money and be donated. Latai says they are aiming to raise about $15,000 for the foundation. “We will start at 3pm on Thursday and the boys will be running overnight for their houses to make sure their baton is constantly going around.” Anyone can run at any time, but the houses must have at least one runner. “We will also have a lot of activities going on throughout the day and a concert on Thursday night.” With the closure of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, Latai says it was important that the boys acknowledged the need for mental health services. “We have been looking at mental health since the start of the year and a lot of the boys

Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly sits down with someone interesting, doing something interesting. This week we speak to Datacom’s Matthew Dodd who is part of the team behind HackNelson, a start-up weekend dedicated to finding exciting solutions to business problems. Q: So what is HackNelson all about? A: This is a way to get smart people together in Nelson who can solve problems that are meaningful to local businesses. It’s about getting a variety of differing perspectives. People bring business knowledge, software skills, digital skills and to get those people together they then learn from each other and spark off each other. Then we add that to the local businesses who are looking for solutions to problems. They are wanting to innovate outside the walls that normally constrain us and do it in a way that’s fun and fast and leads to new opportunity. Q: What actually happens on the weekend? A: Hack Nelson is a 48-hour, high-energy event that starts 4pm on Friday, September 14 to 4pm Sunday at NMIT. We get 50-100 people together - we give them food and fuel, and talented, experienced mentors to coach then and challenge them. Within the structure there is a whole lot of freedom for them to do what they want to do. They form teams and each team works on its own problems. Q: Why is it beneficial? There are people who have done a bunch of these and others who don’t really know what it is. The feedback we got last year is people loved it and others who weren’t sure have signed up to come back again this year. Q: Why do businesses want to have their problems solved in this way? A: It’s hard often to innovate within your own business. You have the pressure of making a dollar and keeping customers happy. Innovating outside is a good way to approach it.
That’s what they are thinking. If they try it what have they got to lose. What we say is that the team who produced the ideas, that team and the business sponsoring the problem, they have the first opportunity to work together. They can then enter into a commercial agreement to take it further. But there is no obligation. Q: Why should people take part? Local film festival showcases Nelson talent Now in its fourth year, the home-grown Top of the South Film Festival continues to expand in quantity and quality. Over 20 short films are in competition this year with four screenings scheduled over September 14 and 15 at the Suter Theatre. One hundred and twenty five years ago, one of the most important protest movements in New Zealand history was taking place and Broadgreen House are celebrating this milestone with an exhibition shining a light on what it was like to be a woman during this time. In 1893, the women’s suffrage movement, led by Kate Sheppard, were lobbying throughout the country to obtain equal polling status – they wanted woman to have the right to vote, and they achieved it. From now until the end of summer, the free exhibition at Broadgreen House gives a
unique view into women of different social classes from servant maids through to the mother of the household and her young daughters. The exhibition, Suffragists at Home – stitching and styles for a cause - is centred around the fact that the home was the heart and hub of many suffragists in the 19th century. It helps show how clothing and accessories were used in the quest to help NZ women get the vote. Volunteer and textile expert Karen Richards says it’s taken about five months to get the exhibition together. “What we’ve tried to show in each room is what the people in that room would’ve been doing at that time, and embroidery is a big part of it.” “This one coat, I spent 10
hours working on, all the little nodules are wood with silk stitched around them so it’s a lot of work, which is not unusual.” Chair of Nelson City Council's community services committee Gaile Noonan says that we should not take for granted the things that women back then fought for us to have. “With all of what the women did in the past and how hard it was for them, we should be actually encouraging all women to at least vote or to stand for election. “Look at all the effort that was taken for us to have the right and so many people don’t vote, and I’d like to encourage those people to vote. Gaile says that it would’ve been a very interesting time
to be a “fly on the wall”. “To see how passionate they were, and how important it was, because I think that we take those things for granted and it wasn’t for them, it was huge. “Imagine the conversations that they were having while they were stitching these things, what they were going to do and how radical it was.” The exhibition is free to enter and is open every day between 11am and 3pm. Nelson's greatest Warrior Simon Mannering notched up his 300th NRL game on Friday night as the Warriors rugby league side finished its round robin run with a nail-biting 20-16 win over the Raiders in Auckland. The Warriors survived a late onslaught from Canberra to celebrate Simon’s record-breaking appearance in style, ahead of their first finals campaign in seven years. Speaking to media following the win, Mannering admitted he was a bit emotional as fans hung around to thank the former Kiwi captain. “It just hit home and I realised how privileged I am to have the sort of support.” Mannering says he suffered a sternum injury as he made his
first tackle and was battling pain throughout the first half. When the half time cool down exacerbated the injury, Mannering was forced to watch the rest of the game from the sideline. “I wasn’t much help tonight, but I’ll rest up and hope for the best next week.” More than fifty Mannerings packed into Mt Smart Stadium to watch Simon farewell the Warriors faithful. The Tasman Mako are beginning to look more and more like the real deal in 2018. A 32-20 bonus point victory over the previously-unbeaten North Harbour team at Albany on Saturday night has propelled David Havili’s side to the top of the Mitre 10 Cup table after three rounds. The Mako mixed some spectacular, high-tempo rugby, combining offloads and diligent backing-up, with efficient set piece play to maintain a slight edge throughout at QBE Stadium. They led 22-13 at halftime, then survived a Harbour comeback where the home side closed within two points, before kicking clear at the end. The Mako management will be hoping to see more of All Black squad member Shannon Frizzel this season, the rangy loose forward starting slowly before demonstrating the class that earned him a black jersey as the match opened up. Also welcomed back was halfback Finlay Christie. He also looked a little rusty at the start, no surprise given his lengthy lay-off, but soon regained his mojo, passing cleverly, sniping with ball in hand, backing

up effectively and generally making good decisions. The entire backline appeared more dangerous throughout. Mitch Hunt, who turned on some fancy footwork and again kicked well from the tee, Havili, Levi Aumua, Tima Faingaanuku, Solomon Alaimalo and Will Jordan appeared full of running and invention. Jordan’s try in the 22nd minute was the product of a superbly-executed move, the sort that works sweetly on the training ground but rarely comes together on match day. The forwards did not have things all their own way, but by fulltime had won a comfortable points victory. At times the scrum threatened to completely dominate, then it came under pressure. The lineout drive was effective, without producing points, while the lineout itself was generally secure on their own ball. Jed Brown had another strong game, doing a lot of the unfashionable work, Ethan Blackadder at his side, while locks Quinten Strange and Pari Pari Parkinson are becoming pivotal at the heart of the set pieces. Tyrel Lomax demonstrated why he is becoming one of the most talkedabout young props on the national
scene. When the Mako played their hightempo, high-risk game they looked comfortable, more so than when they opted for a structured approach. Long may they continue to employ the former style. It won’t always come off, but it sure is exciting to watch. Head coach Leon MacDonald described it as "a tough old fight, but we got there in the end”. "I thought we played really well. We had a couple of calls that would have extended the score line [go against us] and a bit more attention to detail cost us a couple of tries … but we created plenty and it was good enough for a win. "I was really pleased with how we took control in the second half. Our forwards stepped up and put the screws on. Mitch Hunt had an outstanding game at 10, using his boot well and getting that balance between keeping it tight and also using it to width as well. "Shannon Frizell was a force tonight … we obviously used him a lot, we wanted to get our money’s worth with him having only one week back with us …" Next up is a return trip to the City of Sails, taking on the unbeaten Auckland next Friday evening.

Eighty five competitors from across the Top of the South, including Kaikoura, turned out for the champs which were staged in what Maureen described as “sensational” skiing conditions. “They could not have been more perfect, the snow was impeccable“, she said, “and the kids’ behaviour matched the conditions.” The championships involve a team-based competition, across girls, boys and mixed categories, with this year’s leading performers coming from a wide selection of schools across the region.

A 17-year-old Nelson College student carved out his own slice of history at the recent Peters Doig Tasman Secondary Schools Ski championships. Billy Dravitzki became the first para-athlete to compete at the champs, which have been staged for over 20 years, when he raced at the Rainbow Ski Area on August 15. He had previously snowboarded at the event prior to a mountainbiking accident in 2016 which left him with a broken back. This year the highly-motivated student decided to compete at this year’s champs on a “sit ski” and made a huge impression. One of the event organizers,
Maureen Clinton-Baker, secretary of the St Arnaud Ski Race Foundation, said Billy’s efforts “were pretty special”. “He had an opportunity to do some sit-skiing and he loved it. He got in a team, came up and had his first-ever race. “He had no helper, got on the T-bar by himself, got to the start by himself, he was completely independent. It’s a pretty gutsy effort to throw yourself down a race course in a sit ski and go fast. “It was the first time we have had a para-athlete at these champs, we thought he was just awesome.” Billy raced among the other skiers, claiming a gold medal in his newly-created para category, a situation his fellow

Jack Morris is preparing to go into bat for his country at just 15-years old. The Nelson College indoor cricket star will feature for New Zealand in the Junior World Series in Christchurch later this month. Jack caught the eye of national selectors after recent performances for his province at the New Zealand Indoor Provincials in Christchurch last month, where his Southern side took out the U15 division. “We played two games a day and won all but one against CD, we lost by one run.” Southern met the Central side again in the final, this time coming out on top by three runs to win the tournament. In the final, Jack produced a match winning partnership with fellow Nelson College student Jonty Raxworthy. “You normally aim for about twenty for a partnership and we got into the forties, so I was pretty happy with the way I played,” he says. He says the Southern side enjoyed a majority of vocal support from the crowd. “The atmosphere was pretty cool, it’s where the Canterbury Rams play, it’s quite a big building and a lot of people came to support the final.” Jack says indoor cricket is the ultimate all-rounder version of the game. “Everyone has to bat and bowl.” Following the final, Jack was named in the New Zealand side to take on the world next month. “I got pretty nervous because I was about the seventh one named, but then they sad it and I

Photo: Jonty Dine. was pretty excited, Dad was there too which was really cool.” Jack will warm up for the World Series with the Club Nationals on September 13, where he will represent the Hornby U22 side
before the World Series starts on September 30. The tournament will be Jack's first taste of international competition, testing his skills against the best from Australia, Sri Lanka,
England, South Africa and Singapore. Jack's rise through the indoor ranks has been a rapid one, having only started playing last year. However, he developed his cricketing skills playing its outdoor cousin since he was four years old. “There weren’t too many sports I was good at, so I chose cricket,” he says. Jack currently opens the batting for the 2nd XI and has already scored a century for his school. He says he hopes to be blooded into the firsts later this year, is aiming to be on the plane to South Africa for the Indoor World Series in 2020 and ultimately dreams of making the Black Caps. “I want to play for Central Districts and hopefully one day the Black Caps. "But I have to make the 1st XI first.”

SporTS TENNIS: The Nelson Bays Tennis Associations primary and intermediate ‘Have a Go’ open day takes place at tennis clubs across the region on Saturday September 15. All schools from Tapawera to Golden Bay are invited to take part in a free hour of fun on court with their local tennis coach. The ‘Have a Go’ programme launches the summer tennis season with clubs promoting junior tennis across the region over the same weekend.
