A local landlord has spent almost $50,000 on fixing up their rental property after a previous tenant had contaminated it with methamphetamine, and is now warning others landlords to tread carefully. The Richmond property had

been managed by a local rental agency, and the landlord, who did not want to be named, says the contamination levels in the house were so high that “everything had to go”. They have already spent $21,000 in the clean up, decontamination and testing to meet government safety standards, and another

$24,000 so far for the replacement of disposed contaminated materials, including wall coverings, carpets, flooring, drapes, basins and the heat pump. “The sad and frustrating part is that the same management company who recommended and placed this tenant in our rental home, knowing what they have

done, has leased another rental property to them in Richmond”, the landlord told Nelson Weekly. Houses contaminated through the cooking or smoking of methamphetamine is a growing issue in the Nelson region, resulting in a growing number of businesses that specialise in detecting it. Nelson’s rather large Mini fascination has been piqued again with news the region’s famous Daffodil Mini is back in town.

The Daffodil Mini was fully restored by the Caffeine Crew of Wakefield and businesses that they were able to rope in to help. The Mini was raffled off in early 2014 with $110,000

raised and donated to the Nelson Cancer Society. The Mini became a community project and was wheeled throughout town so people

Sun City’s owner Tony Johnston and his team spent hours working on it and his wife Jo says she was delighted to see the back of it. “He did it in evenings and weekends and it took months and months to finish. It got to the point that we were just glad to see it gone. It was so much work for them all,” says Jo. The raffle for the car was won by a North Island man, who then sold it. Since it was raffled, the car has had a tough few years and been owned by five different people. In that time, it was raced, used in a car rally and even had its roof jumped on, causing extensive damage. It then found its way back to Nelson and was bought by Jo. “When we were given the opportunity to buy it we jumped at it, because I really liked it,” she says. “I bought five tick-

ets when it was raffled so I’m so happy to have it now.” The Mini wasn’t perfect when it came back to Nelson, meaning more work for Tony. “It needed quite a bit of tender loving care,” says Jo. “Which is really sad considering how much work went into it at the start. But Tony sees how much I really enjoy driving it so he doesn’t mind working on it. But he reckons he’s created a monster because now everything is just Minis – I love them.” Nelson Mini Club president Andy Wallace says she’s delighted to see the Mini back in town. “As a club we saw it advertised on TradeMe and thought ‘how could we bring it back to Nelson?’ So we’re really happy it’s back now and that it’s in such good hands.” The yellow Mini and its number plate “D4FDIL” has been getting plenty of feedback from around town, says Jo. “A lot of people comment on it. I love it and so do people who see it out and about.”

Landlord spends $50k to clean P FROM PAGE 1 with the majority of requests coming from the rental property market and people looking at buying ex-rental properties. “This is really where we believe any potential contamination problems may be,” he says. “Despite having worked on the Police National Clandestine Laboratory Team for a number of years, I am still surprised at some of the properties which have tested positive for methamphetamine, and I have also been surprised at some of the properties which haven’t. You cannot judge a book by its cover.” Steve says that, locally, the majority of the houses giving positive results have been at fairly low levels, which could suggest that they were as a result of smoking methamphetamine, as opposed to manufacturing it. Nelson Police have also confirmed that there have been no labs used to manufacture methamphetamine located in Nelson so far this year. But, Steve says it’s always wise for landlords to test, before they invest.

New owners for Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

Nelson Weekly has new majority owners. The locally-owned community newspaper was founded in 2010 by two couples, Steve Page and Jenny Bates and Andrew and Sarah Board. At the start of this month Andrew and Sarah took over as majority shareholders, buying out Steve and Jenny. Steve and Jenny will continue to own the Nelson Weekly’s sister paper, Waimea Weekly, while the two papers will hold a joint interest in the news website nelsonlive.co.nz. Andrew, who is also the paper’s editor and will take up the role of managing director, says readers and advertisers won’t notice any difference to how the paper is run. “There’s no need for drastic change, the paper is doing well so it’s simply a ‘stay the course strategy’, which includes always striving to improve what we do. For two years, on and off, Lewis Stanton, who likes to be known as Hone Ma Heke, has been protesting in central Nelson -- now retailers are protesting back. In recent months, Lewis’ Trafalgar St protest has grown from himself and a few cardboard boxes to washing hanging off public art. Now city retailers are protesting the protestor by hanging their own “washing” outside their stores. Untouchable Hair & Skin owner Richard Adams kicked off the protest, hanging out an assortment of clothing in front of his shop first thing Thursday morning. “It’s a bit of a tongue-in-cheek protest against Hone,” says Richard. “I feel for him, he’s got a few problems, but he shouldn’t be making them our problem. “He abused a client of mine the other week and that’s what got me going. She is an elderly woman and she tripped on one of his signs and he took after her and just abused her, so I thought, enough is enough.” Also hanging out washing in protest is Hogey’s Surf owner John Hogan, who says the protest camp-

His gripe is with council not them, but he is costing them massive business. People avoid the arcade and cross the street to avoid him and the shops are losing out. “Council needs to step up and sort this out so we’ve hung our washing out, to show that it’s time to do something,” says John. When told about the protests, Lewis told Nelson Weekly he doesn’t want to be on Trafalgar St. “I don’t want to be here but this is my reality, hanging out washing on the street is my reality, I want council to resolve it because they started it in the first place and I’m only here because I’ve been forced to be.”

Nelson wins ‘City of the Year’

Kate Russell The friendliness of Nelson neighbours has seen it top cities around the country to win the first-ever Neighbours Day Aotearoa - City of the Year title, which was celebrated at the Spring Fling at Burrell Park on Sunday. The Neighbours Day Aotearoa campaign saw over 1100 streets around the country take a weekend in March to get out and get to know their neighbours. More than 65 streets in Nelson organised events, from street BBQs to inviting neighbours over for a cuppa, giving our city the highest per capita participation of any city in the country. Katie Hughes from the Tahunanui Community Centre, who co-hosted the award celebration on Sunday, says they had a good turnout at the event, with lots of community conversations and people getting involved. “I think we’re the friendliest

Double gold medalist to be welcomed home: Paralympic runner Liam Malone will be celebrated at his homecoming on Saturday, October 8, and his local supporters are expected to fill the streets. The celebrations will kick off at noon in front of Nelson’s church steps where Liam will be presented with the Key to the City and will be available for autographs and selfies. “Liam Malone’s achievements at the Rio Paralympics in winning two gold medals and a silver are extraordinary and up there with Nelson’s greatest ever sports achievements,” says Nelson MP Nick Smith.

A Nelson woman deported yesterday says Immigration New Zealand made it overwhelmingly hard for her to try to stay. Silke Larsen and her son have been forced to leave New Zealand despite 500 signatures and 33 letters proving their value to the Tasman region, and support from her MP. The Danish electrical scientist has a PhD in telecommunications but was volunteering and running a berry plant business with her partner. Larsen says she felt she was hitting her head against a brick wall when trying to qualify to stay. “It’s like whenever you communicate with Immigration New Zealand, you start afresh. You start with a new person to connect with.” Larsen said she was thankful for the community’s support but says it was ridiculous she couldn’t meet the department’s needs. “I’ve never had residency. Revamped BP to open tomorrow BP’s rebuilt Haven Rd petrol station is due to open at 6am tomorrow morning and there's a special opening week gift for Weekly readers. Along with the new station and car wash, is a Wild Bean Café, the third to open in the top of the South this year. BP head of retail Debi Boffa says BP is committed to the region and excited to open another new store in the area. “In the past six months we’ve opened three new stores; one in Blenheim, one in Richmond and one right here in Nelson.” When talking to BP about the opening, they said they wanted to give an exclusive offer for Nelson Weekly readers. Nelson designer wins supreme WOW award Nelson artist Gillian Saunders is on top of the world after her outof-this-world design picked up the supreme award at this year’s World of WearableArt awards show in Wellington on Friday. Gillian’s Supernova beat 132 other garments to win the top award, 16 years after first entering a WOW garment. Gillian’s Brancott Estate Supreme award is on top of the David Jones Avant Garde Section she also won, seeing her take home two of the 20 top awards won this year by international designers from the UK, USA, China and New Zealand. Supernova is Gillian’s 16th garment entered to the WOW competition since 2000 and her ninth award. Her 2013 garment Inkling won the Weta: Creature Carnival Award and an internship for Gillian at the five-time Academy Award-winning Weta Workshop. Inkling was also selected for the touring WOW international exhibition. English-born Gillian’s background is in furnishing and textile design. She has been involved with theatre and televi-

sion for most of her working life, first in the UK, where she trained in Yorkshire, and then in Christchurch where she Gillian worked as a Saunders. props maker for the Court Theatre. “I had been making stage props for theatre and TV for years. WOW was the perfect challenge – could I make props for the body as well?” she says. Gillian’s workspace is filled with her book collections, piles of inspiration and her wearable art creations. Her inspiration often comes from books – a sentence or a word that triggers floods of ideas. For Supernova, she says she was inspired by a famous dress, a sea monster fin and images from space. “I was inspired by the texture and colours of Thierry Mugler’s Chimera dress and the iridescent spiny fins of the Hippocampus from the Percy Jackson movie The Sea of Monsters, and some incredible N.A.S.A images taken by the Hubble telescope,”

Gillian says. “Once all these elements were combined, Supernova was brought to life. The large gems represent new stars being born and the dark shadows represent deep space. Each scale has been individually cut, shaded with marker pens and then hand sewn onto the garment. Each gem has had its sticky backing removed and then glued on by hand.” Headed up by WOW founder Dame Suzie Moncreiff, the 2016 WOW Award Show judging panel included distinguished judges Zambesi fashion designer Elisabeth Findlay and sculptor Gregor Kregar. The judging process takes place over three months and involves viewing the garments three times; up close and on the stage in performance. At the awards ceremony, Dame Suzie emphasised the high calibre of the finalists in this year’s competition. “To win this international design competition is an incredible achievement,” she says. “Supernova has the design innovation, the construction quality and vibrant stage presence in performance to win WOW’s top award.”

Trafalgar Centre article 'misleading': Your article about the Trafalgar Centre on the front page of this week’s paper was very misleading. It implied that the failure of the column shown would have caused the collapse of the roof and that that shows that the decision to close the building immediately was correct. The decision to close the building was based on a report that stated that the piles would sink into liquefied soil and that the liquefied soil would flow into saltwater creek and the Maitai River, causing the abutments to the arches to rotate and spread causing the roof to collapse. Subsequent investigation and testing showed that the first report was wrong and that the piles wouldn’t sink and that any liquefaction would not be significant. The strengthening work that has been done was necessary because the roof load and the seismic loads had increased significantly since the original design was done. However, as there was not likely to be a catastrophic collapse as implied by the first report, the building would have only needed to be closed while the strengthening work was being carried out. Both these centres have an established tourist trade and are a destination in their own right. We need to change the council For the last 45 years I have been Self Employed in the Home Appliance, Marine and Alternative Power Industries In Nelson. I helped organise the fundraising and building of the Enner Glynn Hall, I have been a member of Nelson Rotary, and I have been the chairman of the Nelson SPCA for the last 16 years. I am an active member of the Nelson Residents Association. Sue and I live above Enner Glynn with a completely Off Grid Solar Power System and we are committed to looking after Nelson’s environment for future generations. My father, Keith Walker, was a 3 term councillor and my interest in civic affairs stems from my early involvement in the Trafalgar Centre fiasco. For the past few years, I have attended most of the monthly council meetings and I am familiar with all the various procedures, systems, structures and, importantly, the culture at the council. This has been my “Apprenticeship” for the task I now offer myself for. I have made submissions and spoken at council forums, represented people at Resource Consent Hearings, and submitted to the council hearings over the proposed new Stoke Community and Sports Centre. I am familiar with land subdivision and the onerous Building Consent process. However,

most importantly, I will bring my many years of experience of successful self-employment and a practical and realistic attitude to the council table. I have no pet agendas, but my aims are to progressively reduce city debt in a planned way over time - it really concerns me that NCC will be borrowing another fifty million dollars this next year. The city’s infrastructure urgently needs upgrading more rapidly. Frequent sewage spills into the haven and areas flooding are plainly not acceptable. We need greater consultation and more open discussion with affected parties at an earlier stage - there has been too much decided behind closed doors. The city needs re-vitalising to make it more welcoming, we must stop the drift to Richmond. Clearly, more parking is needed and the traffic congestion must be overcome. I support the concept of the Southern Link. I relish the challenge of being a full time councillor now that I face retirement, and will happily work alongside whoever my fellow councillors and mayor might be. Opinion: Southern Link shouldn't be election issue Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz It’s the issue that has dominated this year’s local body elections – but anyone who says they are pro or against the Southern Link has an agenda, and that isn’t what’s best for Nelson. The Southern Link seems to be on the tip of candidates' tongues and various lobby groups are lining up to influence voters and candidates. The anti-Southern Link group Vision Nelson has door knocked in Victory giving ratepayers cards and pamphlets with candidates that they want them to vote for, namely candidates that are against the building of the Southern Link. While the pro-link Progress Nelson has been promoting candidates who support the link. Election signs have also been gaining tacked-on additions with various statements indicating that the candidate supports the Southern Link. But to suggest that voting for pro or anti Southern Link candidates will mean the road is built, or not, is misleading to voters. For one New Zealand Transport Agency, which is conducting an investigation

Some election signs have popped up with pro-Southern Link material attached to them. into the benefits or otherwise of a third arterial route to the city, is only 20 per cent of the way through its study. The environmental impacts have yet to be assessed, nor whether the road will actually be value for money or, indeed, how much it would cost. Any councillor who says they have a position on the road is speculating and stands on dangerous ground. I would hope that elected officials will develop their opinions once the study is finished and released. Only then can they weigh up the pros and cons, listen to the entire community that they represent and make an informed decision. Another critical point in all this is that councillors don’t even decide whether or not the road will proceed. It’s an

NZTA study and the decision will be determined by the government. I understand why these lobby groups are keen to ensure politicians sympathetic to their cause are elected. Council support will send a message to government, while a hostile council would make it hard for MP Nick Smith to argue to his cabinet colleagues that the money will be appreciated by the region. While councillors can have a philosophical view on whether the Southern Link would benefit the region or not, they should still have an open mind when considering the facts released in the NZTA report. Until that report is released, councillors don’t know whether it’s a good idea or not, no one does. One thing is for certain though, whatever this investigation reveals, this region needs to stop dithering and make a decision. If the Southern Link proves the best solution, then build it. If not, let’s look at alternatives that will help free up our roads. We’re not getting any smaller and the number of trucks full of produce and logs from the Waimea Plains to Port Nelson are not getting any less. Something needs to be done, but not with half-cocked information and hyperbole. Let’s get the facts and then make a decision that sticks.

A former Nelson College for Girls student has won a prestigious scholarship to Cambridge University to study for her PhD in biochemistry. University of Canterbury Master’s student Amy Hill was awarded a Woolf Fisher Scholarship earlier this month, which at an estimated value of $300,000 per student makes it one of the most generous scholarships available to New Zealand students. Amy is one of four students to win the scholarship, who are carefully selected from a pool of up to 50 candidates each year. With a UC Bachelor of Commerce completed in 2012, the 24 year old will complete her Master of Science degree in February before moving Cambridge in October next year, where she will spend three to four years. Amy says she could hardly believe it when she found out she had won. “At first it was shock,” she says. “All the shortlisted students were gathered together and given a

letter, so we all went off to open them. I had to read it a few times to double-check, and then I called my Mum. It’s hard to believe I’ll be over there next year.” Born in Nelson, Amy spent part of her childhood in England and America before moving back to New Zealand. She attended Clifton Terrace Primary School, Independent Middle School and Nelson College for Girls before heading down to Christchurch to start University. But she says she is always back in Nelson to spend Christmas with her family. Amy says her goal is to do something that helps people, like discovering new drug therapies. She has a special interest in antibiotic resistance and proposes to investigate either the production of carbapenem antibiotics by various species of bacteria or the biology of bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria. “I have been investigating the impacts of chemicals released in high amounts into the environment, in particular herbicides, on the antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli, Salmonella en-

The streets were abuzz on Sunday with finely dressed gentlefolk upon their classic style motorcycles, united in their support of men’s health. ‘The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride’ saw a group of around 20 dapper gentlemen from Nelson suit up to take part in the international motorcycling event, raising funds for prostate cancer research and suicide prevention programmes. Each rider gained donations and sponsorship, and a little drizzle wasn’t going to stop the cause. Rolling out from Founders Heritage Park, the eloquently-attired group rode down Trafalgar St and to The Stables in Richmond for a spot of tea, then to Monaco for a stop off at the Honest Lawyer before heading back to Founders via Rocks Rd. Organiser Matthew Oppenheim says they achieved their goal of capturing the public’s attention and directing it to the cause. “We turned a lot heads, there were a lot of people either laughing at us or with us, I’m not quite sure which one, but everybody had a good time and it’s for a great cause.” This year’s event saw 50,000 riders in over 500 cities across 90 countries take part and has raised over $4.5million, with $2800 raised by the Nelson group.

Council Debt

This is an open letter to all ratepayers and voters. Nelson City Council, at the end of 2015, had a debt of $74.4 million. By 2020, 4 years from now, it is forecast to explode to double that amount, $153 million. This will leave every ratepayer with a debt of $6,700. This, at a time when, in the past 10 years, the council has received over 100% more income in rates, and inflation has only risen 25%. All Council fees have also skyrocketed in this time. In effect, what is happening is we current ratepayers are leaving a “Legacy of Debt” for the next generations. We must not continue to let this happen! These financial decisions are being passed off with a new buzz word saying “Intergenerational equity”. Most current Councillors, other than Tim Skinner are quite content to let this happen. Tim seems to be a lone voice of reason in Council Chambers. I urge all voters to select savers, not spenders when it comes to marking your voting papers. Statements from some current Councillors in their “re-election pamphlets” talking about “wanting to be transparent”, “keeping rates affordable”, “are experienced”, “hardworking”, “progressive” and “love Nelson”, etc, etc. These statements are laudable, if taken at face value, but they have all had three years to

achieve this and have failed badly. So many projects are over budget, so many flip flop decisions made in haste, and seemingly no commonsense involved at all. It seems to be akin to “putting children in charge of a lolly shop”. “Nice to have” projects appear to be taking priority over necessary maintenance and infrastructure projects. We need to learn, that we as ratepayers, are now liable for any bad debts, as joint guarantors (including Auckland’s), of 29 other councils around the country! Thanks to NCC signing up to the “Local Government Funding Agency”. As Vice President of Nelson Greypower, I have seen the burden of rates payments on those with a fixed income, this also applies to young families on low/minimum wage. I ask you, if you have not already voted, to please consider carefully, and do so within the week, choosing fresh faces to guide this council forward. Councillor has trailer stolen Kate Russell

Nelson City councillor Tim Skinner is down one election trailer after someone pinched it from Atawhai Drive late last week. He says the caged silver-coloured trailer was stolen on either Thursday night or early Friday morning, with the signage and number plate being removed and found further up the road. Several different people contacted Tim on Friday morning to alert him of the theft. “Some good people were on to it

pretty quickly,” he says. “I had a call from Nelmac, and a man who was out walking who found my sign on the grass,” he says. Tim says he always brings the trailer in each night, but after a busy day delivering flyers, he simply forgot. “It’s Murphy’s law, and a sharp reminder that it can happen,” he says. He has also contacted police, but was told that generally people give stolen trailers a quick paint over and sell them. He is asking people to keep an eye out on TradeMe for either a silver or freshly-painted trailer.

The Nelson Fire Station open day was like a dream come true for every young, aspiring fire fighter. Organised by the Retired Fireman’s Association, the event was held as part of the celebrations that marked 150 years of the Nelson Fire Service. The day started with demonstrations by current Nelson fire fighters who used harnesses and other specialist equipment to perform a rescue at height, before getting the hoses out to saturate the tower.

Excited locals watched from below and when the action came to an end, children eagerly rushed to the static display of old, vintage fire trucks and climbed on board. While some of the vehicles had been brought out from Founders Heritage Park, many had been gathered from various other locations around Nelson, including a horse-drawn pump dating back to the early 1900s. Organiser Bob Finlayson said the day had gone very well, attracting quite a few people, although, “the boys made it

more memorable by putting on the displays.” Last Friday night, the 150 year anniversary kicked off with a reunion of past firemen, while Saturday was a chance for the public to experience firefighting then and now. On Saturday night, a dinner was held before a farewell breakfast on Sunday morning brought the event to a close. Throughout the 150 year celebration events, Bob says they have also been collecting money which will be going to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

Even though I can’t recall much about what the gallery used to look like, I was amazed by its transformation when I walked through it recently. The third oldest art gallery in New Zealand, The Suter Art Gallery is a

memorial to the second Bishop of Nelson, Andrew Burn Suter, who travelled to Nelson in 1867. As well as leading the Anglican Diocese, he also busied himself with artistic pursuits as a recreational painter and collector of art. Having long wished to present an art gallery to the people of Nelson, it was after his death in 1895 that his wife, Amelia began realising her husbands dream. She gifted some land, money and Bishop Suter’s art collection as the founding donation and left the build-

ing of a gallery in the hands of the founding Board of Trustees, comprising leading figures in Nelson society. In 1899 the Bishop Suter Art Gallery, which was designed by Frederick de Jersey Clere, was opened, in 2007 it was designated as a Category II Heritage Building and now in 2016, after nearly two years of construction, the major redevelopment of the gallery has been completed. The project has considerably increased the size of the building which now encompasses brand new, modern facilities, constructed around the historical Suter Memorial Gallery. In fact, the building that stands there today is more of an art centre than a gallery, featuring an art library, the refurbished memorial gallery, a beautiful foyer/ communal space, a new education room for hands-on art activities, the refurbished performance theatre and an outdoor sculpture walk.

The group successfully raised $960, although with more contributions to be made, Top of the South HOG hopes to be able to donate $1500 to the worthy cause. For the fourth year running, members of Top of the South HOG have climbed on their bikes to raise money for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Their rally on Saturday morning attracted around 60 riders, including participants from other local motorcycle groups. While numbers of those attending continue to grow, the organising committee is keen to see it expand in other ways and have a number of ideas rolling round for the future of the fundraising rally. After doing their bit last year to help the rescue helicopter trust purchase a new winch, this year the group is hoping to not only continue their support of the service, but also aid the marine search and rescue team in getting a defibrillator. “We leave the rally open to everybody, you can

Whitebaiters around Nelson and Tasman are hoping that their patience will pay off, after a frustratingly slow start to the season. Nelson whitebaiter Pat Melville has been a regular on the lower reaches of the Waimea River since the season opened on August 15 and says catches have declined after a reasonably promising start. “There was a bit of a run earlier on but it’s dried up since then,” Pat says. “But it’s still early in the season so we are still hopeful - we’ll just have to wait and be patient.” Pat’s whitebaiting friend, Kevin Tippett of Richmond, is also optimistic that catches will pick up, but in the meantime he is still more than happy to be out on the river. “We’ll be lucky if we get enough for a pattie today the way things are going,” he says. “But it’s a good day out and it’s another day away from the garden.” A little further upstream, Noel and Joc Davis were not faring any better. The Richmond couple, who have been whitebaiting for over 30 years, were not getting their hopes up after spotting just one whitebait heading up the Waimea River.

“It’s our first day out today and I’ve only seen one whitebait - I don’t think there’s much around.” It appears that the Waimea River is not the only place that’s slow to get going, with Department of Conservation ranger Dirk de Vries saying “there have not been any significant catches to date” on any of the rivers he has been monitoring. “There’s been a few catches of three to five pounds but the whitebait aren’t really running yet,” Dirk says. “It’s still early though - last year things didn’t get going until Labour Weekend, then we had one lady who got 218 pounds in a day in a sock net and regular catches of 30 to 40 pounds.” However, Dirk says it’s often hard to know if the whitebait are running because whitebaiters “keep things pretty close to their chests”. He says the best way to tell if the whitebait are running is by the number of cars parked on the riverbank.” Dirk says whitebaiters have been well-behaved so far although he has issued five written warnings, mostly for exceeding the 6m limit for equipment or fishing more than one-third of the width of a small stream. He says whitebaiters who stand on the outside of the 6m-width of their net and screen are fishing illegally.

New teammates on a new course did not bother Nelson’s Susie Wood, who won her fifth nine hour Torpedo 7 Spring Challenge women’s adventure race at Golden Bay over the weekend. Susie teamed up with fellow Nelsonians Eloise Fry and Anja McDonald to complete the race in 8 hours 50 minutes and 36 seconds, winning by 54 seconds. More than 450 teams took part in the event which

has a mix of rafting, hiking, mountain biking and running, as well as three, six and nine hour race options. Susie says she was thrilled to win again with a new team after she had previously won events in Wanaka, Tapawera, St Arnaud and Hokitika. “I thought the course was fantastic this year and the rafting was a lot of fun, plus there were a lot of navigation points that you had to work your way through,” Susie says. “To win it with a team of local girls is really great and I think they are both really talented

athletes, especially considering we came together late in the piece.” Susie says the event is great for women who want to try to push themselves. “I ride over the Richmond Hills a lot and sometimes during the year I never see anyone, but in the weeks leading up to the Spring Challenge you see groups of women out training for something they otherwise wouldn’t be doing.” The 2017 event will be held in Geraldine and Susie says she expects to be on the start line aiming for title number six.

Tony Frost set to race with his son Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott It’s been 15 years since Nelson stock car driver Tony Frost last drove competitively on the race track. The former Nelson Tiger and two-time New Zealand modified champion is back behind the wheel this season at Nelson Speedway. He had a wee peddle last year but that was purely for fun. The plan this year was to get a second car built so he could have a couple of seasons racing with his son Brad. Brad raced the car last year and was part of the successful Tasman Thunder team that

finished second at the New Zealand Stock Car Series. Tony, who spends many months away in China for work, felt that the opportunity to race with his son was starting to disappear. Last year, the whole family travelled to the North Island for Brad to race for the New Zealand title plus a few other events. The trip meant a lot to Tony, not just for the family time, but he felt Brad learnt a lot about racing. Brad, 18, is a promising engineer, he has a stock car half-built in the shed, but a nasty infection has put a stop to his racing for the near

future. Tony is also recovering from a blood infection from a cut in China a few months ago, but said he felt good after his first practice. The car has had some updates and while still not set up correctly, he was happy with the pace. Tony can see Brad in a sprint car in a few years’ time and feels that it would suit Brad’s racing style. Tony’s plan is to race the car at club meetings only and as part of the Thunder management team that aims to go one better this year in Gisborne and bring the New Zealand Stock car teams’ title to Nelson.

Liam Malone on verge of NZ 400m running record Nelson blade runner Liam Malone looks set to break some New Zealand sprinting records in the near future. Shaun Farrell has held the New Zealand 400m record of 46.09 since 1998 when he won the national title in Wanganui. The blade runner Liam Malone is now knocking on the door of running a sub-46 second time. In winning the Paralympics T44 400m gold medal in Rio Malone ran 46.20. The question now being asked is, can he take the New Zealand record? Shaun is not fazed at the possibil-

ity of losing the record to Malone. A philosophical Farrell says that it doesn’t bother him. “It’s good for the sport and great for athletics, getting all this publicity. “Compared to world times, it’s a pretty soft record and someone has to get it soon,” says Farrell. “While it is cool to have the record I’m prouder of my 800m time than the 400m. “It will be great to see (Liam) run 45 seconds, he is capable of it and it will be great to see someone get the record legitimately,” Liam arrived in New Zealand last week.

What a week it has been for Nelson College football captain Labu Pan. He scored a goal to help his team win the Price Charity Cup final against Marlborough Mariners last Wednesday and just four days later he started Tasman United's first-ever game. Labu says playing the Wellington Phoenix Premier Reserves was the biggest challenge of his footballing life so far, for the record Wellington won the contest 1-0. Labu played the opening 45 minutes before a head knock in a challenge for an aerial ball on the eve of halftime, saw him replaced. "That was a big step up to what I'm used to. They (Wellington) were so fast and skilful on the ball. "I enjoyed it, but my legs were sore after the game on Wednesday.” Tasman United got better as the match went on, creating more chances in front of goal in the second half. "I was nervous before the game but playing in front of a good home crowd helped us settle down.” Labu says he's keen to make

Kaye Surgenor brings rowing skills to Nelson Jacob Page Kaye Surgenor has arrived in Nelson to take over the head coaching role of the male crews at the Nelson Rowing Club, and she has her sons to thank for it. The former Queen Charlotte College and Canterbury rower started her new role last week, a decade after her two sons Robbie and Karl Manson decided to try the sport at Marlborough Boys’ College. The duo have both rowed for New Zealand at the Olympics, but it was their foray into the sport that gave Kaye a chance to follow her dream. “Robbie hated rowing and was more into his horse riding, but when Karl had been rowing for two months. he decided to give it a go and told me he was going to sell his horse and buy a single [scull-boat], which he did. “I got roped into coaching Karl’s crew because he had no coach but I’d always wanted to coach.” Kaye left St Margaret’s

The main goals will be to

get club crews ready for the national championships and high school rowers ready for the Maadi Cup in early 2017. Kaye hopes she will become an elite coach for Rowing New Zealand and saw her coaching in Nelson to be a long-term venture. “I always wanted to coach ,but when I retired I was busy being a pony club mother and carting kids around the countryside and I didn’t get to have the opportunity that is in front of me for this season and to build on what I know as a coach.

a trip into the unknown. “We expect to be competitive but playing seven games in two days is a lot for the girls. “There’s a lot of talent in the Year 8 to 10 agegroups and the meeting we’ve had today has been about how we get those girls coming through and into the sport.” The team is coached by former Otago Sparks and Central Hinds player, Kate Stiven. “Having Kate on board is great for the team as all the girls look up to her,” Peter says.

Boxers looking for golden opportunities Jacob Page Nelson's Whakatu Boxing Club is hoping to send a few of their best to the North Island Golden Gloves in the coming weeks, if they can gain the funding to do so. Coach Dion Hall has six of his club keen to head north; he just needs the money to make it happen. "These guys train for a year before they're capable of being in the ring, so chances like this are important. "You don't want to do all the training and then not have the chance to put it into practice." The last remains boxing club in Nelson is all too familiar with hitting the road in search of opponents and bouts. "We travel to Christchurch regularly and have been down to Timaru and Ash-

burton this year trying to get match-ups," Dion says. "The reality is that there are twice as many fighters in the North Island so it would be a great experience for our guys." Dion says the club runs on a shoestring budget where almost all of the money goes on equipment and trips to boxing tournaments. "We can't charge people lots to train here because if it's not affordable then they'll find another sport to do, so most of the money goes towards getting us to tournaments. "I'm just a coach, I can teach boxing but the fundraising side of it isn't really my thing. "We have some talented fighters here who are looking for a shot, so any help would be much appreciated."
