Freedom campers have a month of total freedom until a new bylaw kicks in on December 1. Nelson City Council says it is
already fielding complaints of curious camping decisions, and many are taking to social media to vent their frustrations. But the council is powerless until the bylaw comes into effect. Last week a member of the public spotted a tent pitched by swings
outside the Elma Turner Library - presumably to take advantage of the library’s free WiFi internet. “I waited around but no one moved, so I guess they were asleep,” says Jordan Woolley, who snapped the photo after leaving work at midnight last Thursday.
However, the Nelson City Freedom Camping Bylaw does not take effect until December 1, after being adopted by the council in September. When the bylaw comes in, it will see a ban on tents and non-selfcontained vehicles in the central
city. These will be restricted to official campgrounds and private accommodation facilities. Certified self-contained vehicles will be allowed in city car parks, some reserves and residential streets

streets outside the CBD - but there are tight restrictions on how many are allowed and how long they can stay. Those who are in breach of the bylaw will receive a $200 fine. Until then, council says it will put in place “transition provisions” which will involve enforcement staff approaching campers to educate them on the new freedom camping bylaw. “Staff will still be moving people on who aren’t camping responsibly,” says acting Nelson City Council chief executive David Hammond. Last summer the influx of freedom campers after the Kaikoura earthquake caused a headache for the city. This resulted in the council spending $80,000 on setting

David says he expects big numbers again this year and is confident the bylaw will work - although there may be an adjustment period. “Around the country bylaws are working better for communi-
ties than areas without them,” he says. “Given the numbers we had through the city last summer, there were no major problems, however, it was clear that we needed a bylaw to better manage issues in the future. “However, as this is a new ap-
proach this season, we expect it may take some time for campers to understand and follow the new regulations.” He says that Environmental Inspections Limited have been contracted to carry out patrols in both the evening and early morning, as well as respond to complaints. There will also be signage in place at designated areas and information will be available through camping websites and apps, as well as on the council website and on the Nelson App. The iSite will also have pamphlets available for campers and these will also be distributed to visitors. Nicole Cooley says almost everyone in her neighbourhood has a “near miss” story. There is no footpath on Seafield Terrace, which leads through The Glen towards the Boulder Bank. Since Nicole moved in eight years ago, more families have arrived with more children. A playground and sports fields have also been installed. Nicole says there are more people than ever visiting the seaside spot. But if you want to walk to the playground from Nicole’s house, you must negotiate the road on one side and a ditch on the other. Children get picked up and dropped off on the road by their school bus. However, the speed limit is still 50kmh and there are no speed humps. “We are just scared stiff that one of our kids is going to be hit,” she says. As the chairperson for her local community group, Nicole says she has taken the cause upon herself. So, she started a petition asking the Nelson

gone anywhere. “We have done our best to try to curb this behaviour ourselves, now it is the council's turn to come to the party before one of us or our children’s lives are tragically affected or taken.” The council’s group manager for infrastructure, Alec Louverdis, says council is aware of the concerns and a digital speed reminder sign is being installed his week. Council is also reviewing speed limits around the city and Seafield Terrace will be investigated as part of this work.

Woman stabbed at speedway A woman was stabbed in the leg outside the Nelson Speedway on Lansdowne Rd on Saturday night. The victim was transported to Nelson Hospital via ambulance. The offender ran from the scene and police are now investigating the incident which took place at around 9pm. They are still making enquiries in the area, are speaking to witnesses and say that at this stage, an arrest has not been made. Rare sale of late Nelson artist’s work A large collection of art including 58 paintings by the late Nelson artist Jane Evans is up for grabs in Auckland. Nelson philanthropist Sally Hunt is selling her collection of 120 paintings and art experts say it’s a rare opportunity to gain works by Jane. When she died, in 2012, Jane was described as one of the art world’s leading lights who was “superb at creating beautiful environments”. Auckland’s International Art Centre’s director Richard Thomson says it’s a unique opportunity to own a piece of art by a unique Nelson artist.

War-time relics uncovered? Charles Anderson & Jessie Johnston It is a mystery that was almost lost to the sands of time. Tahunanui resident Brendan Morton was walking his dog along the beach on Thursday afternoon when he came across a family who’d begun to unearth some concrete treasures. “You could see that they were kind of moulded to be something, but we weren’t sure what they were,” says Brendan. “Then on Saturday morning, we were down there again with the dog and the kids were back into it, so I got my wife to go home and get the spades and me and my daughter joined in and started digging it up.” Pictures were then posted on social media and a number of suggestions were put forward by the community including dumped concrete that had been washed along by the sea, bits of a concrete tank or a concrete pipeline. However, the most interesting theory is that the pieces were once part of a WW2 fortification. “It’s all still together, so it doesn’t really add up that it would have washed there, all the elements are almost touching each other.” The Nelson Weekly has taken up the challenge to clear up the mystery. The Nelson City Council did not know what it could be but the Nelson Provincial Museum’s registrar Meredith Rim-

After taking a look at the structure Graeme explained how there were barbed wire and machine gun emplacements all along the beach in preparation for a potential Japanese attack during WW2. There was even an anti-aircraft gun near where Natureland is now. “But it’s a bit hard to say what these might be. It’s certainly good to get people thinking though.” Graeme referred the newspaper to Kerry Neal, who wrote a book about military emplacements around the region. He was more sceptical but not totally dismissive about the structure’s potential war-time origins. “It’s a great story ... there are many structures around the city from that era but my view is that this is something that the council installed for storm water purposes.” However, he says his word should not
be taken as gospel as there are two major gun emplacements on the cliffs above Fifeshire Rock and a major building on Arapiki Rd. He says there was even a gigantic bulldozer brought to Nelson and constantly manned in case the aerodrome was bombed and craters needed to be filled in. “It was all on,” Kerry says. “If the United States had not resisted the movement down to here and checked the Japanese at the Coral Sea, there is no question that a limited convoy would have arrived in New Zealand and one of the favoured spots would have been Tahuna Beach.” Shelley Doherty of the Nelson Provincial Museum filled in some of the gaps their team gleaned from the archives. In 1940 the Royal New Zealand Air Force took over Nelson Airport and the government built hangers and a base. This included gun emplacements, training rooms and a rifle range. There were further facilities including “dispersal pits” where planes could be hidden at Annesbrook and around the airport. The squadron’s role was to guard Cook Strait, but in 1943 the Nelson station ceased to be operational. “We are not sure that the concrete treasures found are in fact from the airfield,” Shelley says. “But we love the fact that Nelson is interested in the history and heritage of the area.” The Nelson Weekly will update the story as more information comes to light.

A business analyst and an IT specialist walk into a pub. That’s how the story starts – 11 years ago. Back then, Mike Stringer and Ed Briem were just friends who liked drinking beer and playing chess. But what they really wanted to do was brew beer together. Mike started brewing his own as a student, but then he began getting serious about it and holding “how to” sessions at the very first MarchFests. “I was really excited about doing beer properly,” he says. “I realised that when you talk to people and you say you make homebrew, there is this label on it that makes people think of students brewing in bathtubs.
There wasn’t that perception that it could be quality.” So, he and Ed set out to change that. The League of Brewers was born. The pair have operated online for some time but only just opened their first dedicated store out of a warehouse on Vivian St in Tahunaui. “For us it’s about the hobby,” Mike says. “There are people who want to brew for cost but it’s a lot more motivating if it’s about quality, so that is what we focus on – helping people make better beer.” The pair had been looking for a location for about a year and when the previous tenants, distillers Liquid Alchemy, moved out they knew they had found their place. The store is now stocked with grains, yeasts, hops, brewing kits and expert advice. They also

Eventually, they also want to be able to brew and sell their own beer there. “Every homebrewer dreams of selling their beer commercially,” Ed says.
When they do get set up with all the right paperwork, the League of Brewers will be one of the smallest commercial breweries in the country. “It’s never going to be about putting bottles on supermarket
shelves,” Mike says. “This will be about something local – one keg at a time.” The pair are focusing on making sure they are growing steadily. They already have a strong community supporting it and have Dan Hagenaar manning the shop during the week. “Our goal is the same as when we started,” says Ed. “It’s about getting people into brewing. You can be creative and scientific. It’s a great hobby.” They offer beginners’ courses for those starting out, as well as homebrew competitions for those who are further along their journey. “We want more people to brew great beer,” Ed says. “It’s about the fun of it.” Find out more at leagueofbrewers.com

Locals couldn’t wait to join in the Colour Craze fun day at Saxton Field on Sunday morning, with people of all ages enjoying the chance to get a little messy. It’s the second year that the event has been run, organised by the Nelson Multicultural Council, Tasman Youth Council and Sport Tasman, with funding from Tasman District Council. “We’re really focused on promoting cultural diversity,
healthy lifestyles through fitness and exercise, and just bringing the community together,” says Tasman Youth Council member, Taylah Shuker. “Last year was the first year it was run and this year we built on what we learnt to make it even bigger and better.” As well as food carts, spot prizes, cultural performances and everybody’s favourite, colourful paint powder, participants also got their blood pumping with a 2.4-kilometre course that they either ran or walked.

Arrest for stealing tools Christmas decoration A 42-year-old man has been charged with stealing $30,000 worth of tools from a construction site in the centre of town. A significant number of tools were taken from a Fitzgerald Construction site along Trafalgar St on Sunday, October 22. Late last week, police searched an Atawhai Dr property and located
the vehicle used in the burglary. The vehicle had previously been stolen from a commercial premises in Nelson on October 13. Police also recovered a trailer which had been stolen several days earlier. The alleged thief appeared in the Nelson District Court on Monday facing multiple burglary and theft charges.

A smaller version of the preferred design from the Christmas tree competition, which only attracted eight artist entries, will now be displayed in the Christ Church Cathedral. “Feedback from the arts selection panel was that there wasn’t enough time to full develop the Christmas tree concepts into actual artworks – it was a really big ask in that period of time,” says Rachel. Mike says he has engaged with “at least half a dozen” local artists on the designs, which he says will portray the “things we like to do and experience in
our lovely city”. Decorations will be concentrated in the CBD, including the cathedral, church steps, Upper Trafalgar St down to Civic House and Bridge and Hardy Sts bounded by Collingwood and Rutherford Sts. The Norfolk Pine in Tahuna will be lit as per usual and options for Stoke are also being considered. “We’re very keen to do something in Stoke,” says Rachel. “We really want this to feel like a Nelson Christmas and we hope this year creates a platform for us to build on for the future.”

'Badass' scientist moves to Nelson And the astronomer says Donald Trump's Mars strategy is all wrong Charles Anderson Editor

He has an asteroid and a science fiction robot named after him. He has worked on space programmes around the world, authored hundreds of articles on all matters celestial and helped produce an Emmy-winning documentary. He even introduced the Sex Pistols at one of the band’s first ever gigs in 1975. And now, Duncan Steel also has some bad news for President Donald Trump. Despite being named as one of the most “badass scientists” in the world, Duncan has kept a low profile since moving to Nelson two years ago. Instead he has focused on writing two new books to add to his anthology. One of these proposes that instead of trying to send humans to Mars, we should be looking at sending bacteria instead. Trump has proposed putting a human on the surface of Mars during his presidency. “That’s just not going to happen,” Duncan says.
“It’s too expensive, it’s too dangerous to send humans there and the probability for success is too small. There are too many things to go wrong.” Duncan should know. The English-born astronomer first came to New Zealand in the 1980s to set up a radar station near Christchurch for observing meteors. He also helped create the first efforts to search the Southern Sky for “near earth objects” that might collide with the planet. Since then, the Royal Astronomical Society member has worked on space programmes across the world, including NASA and the European Space Agency and also advised the Australian Department of Defence. Duncan’s work also led to a minor planet/asteroid formally named for him by the International Astronomical Union — (4713) Steel — and also a lunar-roving robot, again called ‘Steel’, in one of Arthur C. Clarke’s novels. He also claims to have introduced the Sex Pistols at their first ever gig at Queen Elizabeth College in London. His latest project, however, is working on a book advocating

Photo: Charles Anderson spreading genetically-engineered microbial life for all extra-terrestrial locations found to be barren. “I don’t think we are going to find life elsewhere in the solar system,” Duncan says. “So, we should be thinking about seeding it.” He says there is a window of opportunity to start developing bacterial life that could survive in an environment like Mars. “If no life can be found on Mars, and I bet on that, then that is not to say there couldn’t be life on Mars. The simple motivation for his idea is that he believes that “life is good”. Duncan says bacteria contains seven percent of DNA that humans have. So, in the same way that we have an interest in our fellow humans and our environments because we are related to those things, there should be a similar interest
in spreading our related bacteria. “If we insert bacterial life on Mars we would be ensuring our genes will continue. It sounds airy fairy but if could be a unifying thing for humans to do.” He thinks the “ballyhoo” of sending humans to Mars needs to stop. He hopes, instead, that the conversation can be shifted to sending other life into the Solar System. Currently all Mars missions have been sterile to avoid contaminating the planet. However, he believes soon we will start thinking the other way – about making sure that life does make its way there. “But unless we start talking about it now then it won’t happen,” he says. “People think about keeping places pristine, I’m more interested in people than keeping Mars pristine.” Duncan will speak to the Nelson Science Society on Thursday at 7.30pm at the Cawthron Institute about one of his side hobbies – the research of eclipses through history and how they have helped shape world events.

Art exhibitions, business workshops, music, theatre and a free community day are all on the agenda as Nelson gets ready for an actionpacked China Week. After the success of the inaugural China Week in 2015, this year promises an even bigger timetable as Nelson celebrates its close links with its sister cities in China. A range of public and private events are planned throughout next week and event manager Chris Butler is encouraging locals to get involved and “soak up some Chinese culture”. Locals can have a go at Tai Chi, learn about doing business with China or attend a theatre and music night at the Theatre Royal which will feature two visiting Chinese primary schools. The Trafalgar Centre will play host to the Rewi Alley and Art Exhibition, or you can learn a thing or two about Chinese history at the Nelson Public Library. The week finishes with a community open day at NMIT next Saturday with a wide range of activities on offer including Chinese calligraphy, knot and lantern making, food and refreshments, music, art displays, table tennis and performances. “It’s a great chance for us to celebrate our relationships with China, for us to connect with our local Chinese community, and also, for them to connect with us,” says Chris. Mayor Rachel Reese says the week is all about celebrating Nelson’s close relationship, and recognising our historical links with China. “I am particularly proud of our city’s long standing connections with China, through our Sister Cities, Huangshi and Yangjiang,” she says. “Since signing our sister city agreement in 1995, there have been over 20 educational, medical, cultural, business, sporting, and municipal exchanges between our cities.” Chinese Consulate General Wang Zhijian says that he is very supportive of China week and hopes everyone will “have a bite of China” and attend the events on offer. Marlborough introduces Ocean Vine Hop fest Marlborough is kickstarting the summer festival scene with the inaugural Ocean Vine Hop, an event dedicated to the best in local seafood, wine and beer. I always knew that someday Uber would take over the taxi business. It’s a sad situation when security cameras are not compulsory because it helps to protect the driver from being attacked and, in some cases, the passenger from being sexually harassed or assaulted. Local talent turned heads at the High Low Fashion Weekend as it returned for its second year. With more designers, models, and over 250 people in the audience, organiser Sarah Brennan says the event surpassed expectations. “It always looks so relaxed and poised when the girls walk out but it is frantic behind the scenes, we had a dozen designers and around 55 models so there were clothes everywhere backstage. “We definitely had a lot more hype this year because people had heard about last year. We even had a lot of people travelling from out of town.” Sarah says High Low is an awesome way to show the rest of New Zealand what Nelson can do. “It’s incredible being able to showcase local designers, this year’s designers were all awesome, they were all very unique, enthusiastic and great to work with.” Nelson designer Brooke Strang

The sisters have already earned a reputation for their unique streetwear and hand-drawn prints but they managed to
turn heads once more at High Low, launching ‘Side Hustle’, their latest summer collection. “Our previous collections have been generally quite tailored and not as colourful, so we’ve really showed quite a different side with this collection, it is fun, there’s quite a lot of colour, we’ve got several dresses. Overall this collection is a lot more summery.” Brooke says all the different
collections at High Low showed the talent and dramatic growth of Nelson’s fashion scene. “There are more and more emerging designers in Nelson and our fashion scene is getting stronger and stronger. It’s great to have High Low in Nelson, we’ve got so many people who are really fashion forward and it gives models and designers an incredible launching platform.”

icon in the city. “Throughout these past 20 years, I think it’s the staff I’ve enjoyed most,” says Kay. “I’ve met some really great people.” Dedicated staff has been the key to the success of the business and Kay currently has a great team in the kitchen and behind the counter. “Benoit Gourgues is a French pastry chef and a recent addition to Morri Street and we’re all enjoying his expertise,” says Kay. “Baydon Fowlie is our talented head chef and Jessica Shin is Morri Street’s front of house manager.” Morri Street’s menu has something for everyone, whether it’s breakfast or lunch on the go, a sit-down meal or a snack from their well-stocked cabinet. The breakfast menu includes the Morri Street Big Breakfast, Moroccan eggs, their own famous house-made muesli and Nasi Lemak – a variation of the Malaysian national dish with

When Kay Field decided she wanted to establish a café in the centre of Nelson, there were many who doubted her choice of business. Thankfully, she went ahead with her plans and Morrison Street Café was born. “I had a background in hospitality and I’d started to do catering for my friends and family,” says Kay. “Everyone told me not to open a café, that Nelson does not need another café, but I thought, ‘nobody is doing really good coffee’ and it’s interesting that now serving great coffee is what we’ve become really well-known for.” Morrison Square was previously owned by Kay’s family and, with a business concept in mind, Kay and her father began looking for the perfect building for her café. “He showed me a few sites including this little building right in Morrison St, which I liked the idea of,” says Kay. “It was quite tiny, about where Aki Sushi is today, surrounded by a parking area. We spent a year there and then moved to the building we currently occupy on Hardy St.” Now, 20 years later, Morri Street has successfully brewed, cooked and waited its way into the hearts of many customers and Kay is extremely proud of the reputation her café has earned. In 2015, Kay rebranded the business as Morri Street and treated the

City centre a hive of colour and fun for Masked Parade

Nelson streets were buzzing with bees, penguins, dragons, cultural performances and green fairies at Friday night’s Masked Parade. Over 3500 people marched through the main streets in ‘We Are The World’ inspired costumes. Upper Moutere School staff and students became a frenzy of buzzing bees in a field of flowers and took out both the School Category and the Kim Merry Supreme Award Trophy. In the group category, the Sambassadors took the title. Nelson’s resident artist Mike Ward won the individual category, just ahead of Karl Wulff. Chair of the Community Services Committee Gaile Noonan says that the parade was a fantastic spectacle. "The Masked Parade is when Nelson's creative heart gets to come out and play. Memories are made on the streets of Nelson on Masked Parade night, and we're getting to the stage where we have parents in the parade who took part in it as children."

Brass band turns 160 Locally Owned and Operated

One of the oldest brass bands in the country will be celebrating its 160th birthday this weekend when it performs a world premiere at a Gala Concert in Nelson’s Theatre Royal. The Nelson City Brass was formed as part of the region’s military services in 1857 and this Saturday it celebrates its 160th anniversary with a street march and a Gala Concert. To make the big day extra special, the band will be wearing new uniforms and will play the world premiere of a composition titled Tasman Bay, that it commissioned for the anniversary. “The band was formed by the early settlers and because the army were involved it was called the Nelson Garrison Band,” band secretary Wayne Jennens says. “Then that was changed to the Nelson Municipal Band and finally the Nelson City Brass – it’s not official but we are claiming the title of the oldest brass band in the country.” And now it has become one of the best bands in the country after winning the national C grade competition for the second con-

Six of its members also helped the National Band of New Zealand finish second at the World Music Contest in the Netherlands and Wayne says that’s largely due to the influence of musical director Nigel Weeks. “We have won every single contest we have been in since Nigel started at the beginning of 2016. He comes from a background of excellence and he’s been the key to our improvement.
“We’ve also been very lucky to get support from the Nelson City Council and a number of pub charities. It costs a lot to get to all the contests, especially when they are in the North Island.” Although the band is becoming more competitive and professional, Wayne says it remains “very family-orientated with lots of couples and fathers and sons”, and players of all ages. The youngest members include teens Jake McNaughton, Ben Kir-
by and Natania Ngawhau, while the oldest, 98-year-old Maurice Abrahams, has just retired from playing. Wayne says Tasman Bay was written by English composer Dan Price. The band will open its gala concert with the piece, which he says reflects the places and people of Nelson. The concert will feature special guest artist Jackie Clarke. Steve Miles, who is regarded as one of
the finest euphonium players in the world, will also play at the concert. The street march will be held on upper Trafalgar St starting at 10.30am, while the Gala Concert starts at 4.30pm. Tickets for the Gala Concert cost $25 for adults and $15 for children and students and can be purchased at the Theatre Royal or through Ticket Direct by phoning 0800 224 224.

#FinZ Up It’s been a rollercoaster of a season for the Tasman Makos who once again fought their way through to the Mitre 10 Cup premiership final. However, Saturday night’s game at AMI stadium ended in disappointment for the team as they failed to take the win on New Zealand provincial rugby’s biggest stage, suffering their third Mitre 10 Cup premiership final defeat in four years. Once again, the cup was presented to a victorious Canterbury after a match that saw both sides give it their all. Things certainly didn’t start in Canterbury’s favour with centre Levi Aumua stunning the crowd with the game’s opening try. Mitch Hunt then followed things up with a conversion and subsequent penalty, pushing Tasman to a 10-0 lead. Canterbury weren’t far behind though as No. 10 Richie Mo’unga achieved two solo tries to put the favourites ahead 12-10, after 24 minutes. Despite a second Hunt penalty that saw Tasman take the lead once more, Canterbury’s clear set phase

One of our main motivations is to do well for our community and knowing that they’re proud of us is massive.” While their finals defeat was no doubt heart-breaking for players and fans, the Tasman Makos have certainly seen some highs in a season they can be proud of. Canterbury delivered a decisive earlyseason statement of intent with a 39-0 win, followed by Tasman’s shock loss to Manawatu. However, things picked up for the side when they took the win from Waikato and ended Wellington’s unbeaten run. Tasman defeated Otago, putting themselves into premiership contention before enhancing their claims to a playoff spot with a comfortable win over Southland. Their match against Taranaki was hampered by Viliami Lolohea’s red card and their temporary drop to 13 men in the second half, allowing the opposition to cruise to a 40-26

hard to have a stable squad together, but I think it showed our character as an organisation and a team, we just kept managing to tick things off and get the results we needed, it’s just we couldn’t quite go the whole hog,” says Martyn. The Tasman Mako’s achievements on the pitch this season are all the more remarkable considering four of their top players are currently with the All Blacks. “To have four
of them, it just shows where we’re going as an organisation,” says Martyn. “It is a little bit bitter-sweet because we’re so proud of them, but it does obviously put some pressure on our resources although the guys that did come in for them did a good job.” It’s the most players Tasman has produced for the national side in one season and while Tim Perry, David Havili, Liam Squire and Kane Hames all

A Church of England vicar of Irish origin named Patrick O’Brunty so admired Horatio Nelson that he changed his name to Patrick Bronte. In 1820 he became rector of Haworth in the West Yorkshire
moors where his three daughters grew to womanhood, enjoying the freedom and remoteness of the moorlands and developing into three of the world’s best-known women authors – Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte.
Nelson is playing host to 14 teams from around the globe taking part in the World Benchrest Championships at Packers Creek Range, Maitai Valley, starting later this week. Benchrest is known as the “super accuracy” game of the shooting sports with competitors attempting to put a shot on the target, followed by four more through the same hole. And with team events you have all four members aiming for the same hole. “We are the only sport where it can
only get worse after the first shot,” laughs organiser Graeme Smith. Teams from Canada, Italy, Finland, France, South Africa, United States, Australia and New Caledonia, as well as individual competitors from Luxembourg, Indonesia, Argentina and Namibia will be competing in the 10-day event. Graeme says that organising the biennial championships has been a massive undertaking, four years in the planning. “It’s a big effort, but it’s the second time we’ve hosted the event and last time was such a

Tasman United has had the perfect start to the national football league and it will be hoping for the perfect home-coming this Sunday. Tasman started the ISPS Handa Premiership with two road games -- against Hamilton Wanderers and Canterbury United. It won them both and now sits top of the competition in just its second season in the top-flight. Tasman coach Davor Tavich says he's a happy man. "It's not a bad start. It's still early days but we're very happy with
how we started." The latest win came against Canterbury in Christchurch on Sunday, with teenager Callan Elliot scoring the winner late in the game. Davor says the region is blessed with top young players and he was delighted to see him get the winner. "We have a lot of young talent in Nelson, a lot of young boys aged 18 and 19 at a good level. He's very happy and we're happy with him." Despite the strong start, Davor says Tasman will need to re-set and prepare well for Southern United this Sunday at Trafalgar Park. Tennis players raise cash for breast cancer Tennis players around the region dressed in pink to help raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation. The Kelly Bowater Travel Rally Against Cancer event was set to take place at seven different clubs around the region, however rain put a stop to things in Wakapuaka, Motueka and Golden Bay. In its second year, the event saw an hour-long exercise session on court to help highlight the importance of exercise for mental and physical wellbeing, and to
raise money for Breast Cancer. Nelson Bays Tennis Association regional coordinator, Ali McQuillan, says they were thrilled with the event and were pleased to see a great number of men and children coming out to support the cause, too. Richmond, Nelson, Hope and Mapua clubs averaged around 30 participants each on the day, together raising around $1000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. While another win is top of Davor's wish-list he's also hoping for a strong, vocal crowd. "The boys love [Trafalgar Park] and I love it too. We love the atmosphere, we have a passionate home crowd and we're hoping for a big crowd this Sunday." Davor says the entire squad is fit and healthy and available for selection this weekend. Lochie wins snowboarding medal
Andrea Fensom Fishing for fun used to be mainly a man’s domain. A few of us fisherwomen have proved that we can do it too. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has a lot of women members these days, providing great friendly rivalry. Snapper fishing is my favourite and my personal best was over 23lb - it was a lot of fun to catch. But I cannot boast the biggest snapper in our house – my husband’s fish was a mere pound heavier! We have a great team thing going on – generally he does most of the fishy smelly jobs and I sort the food. This seems to work very well and I am sure a few other “better halves” have a similar arrangement. Recently we had the privilege of attending a very interesting talk on game fishing with Tony Orton from Mangawhai just north of Auckland. Tony and Bea own a charter business and not only do they do charters from their home (with accommodation available) but they also take paying guests overseas to do amazing trips for big game fishing. When Lochie Hall broke his ankle in June it cut his training for the New Zealand Freeski and Snowboard Junior Nationals from 12 weeks to just three. Not that it stopped him from winning a medal. The 13-year-old Nelson College student grabbed a bronze medal for his efforts in the half pipe at the nationals at Cardrona, a result he didn’t expect. “When they called my name out to go on the podium, I thought they said something else so I just gave it a little while to see if anyone else came up, but they didn’t.” Lochie, who comes from a skiing family, started on skis as a

His mum Jackie says Lochie is “passionate” about snowboarding and is heading to Big Bear Mountain in the United States with a coach from Wanaka. It’s a happy end to what could have been a very frustrating winter. He broke his ankle when his brother double-bounced him on a trampoline. The initial five-week stand-down turned into 12 weeks, so when he got to nationals Lochie wasn’t expecting much. He says you are scored on the amount of height you get in the half-pipe and the technicality of the tricks you do.
“I wasn’t doing crazy stuff, because I haven’t done too much half pipe – basically just a few spins and grabs and 360s,” he says. Jackie says the ankle did hold him back in some other parts of the competition. “There're five things that they can compete in and half pipe was one of them, the others were slalom, slope style, border cross and big mountain and he was a bit limited on what he could do in the other ones because the surgeon said he’s not allowed to do big jumps.” Lochie says his ultimate goal is to get to the Olympics or X Games, but for now it’s about strengthening that ankle for his trip to the US.

Hockey stalwart remembered with Town v Country game Andrew Board A Nelson hockey stalwart was the inspiration behind a new Town v Country fixture. Mark Wilkens died while playing hockey at Saxton Field in 2015. Last week a new trophy named in his memory was up for grabs in the inaugural Town v Country game at Saxton Field. The teams were split with “town” players coming from Nelson and the “country” players from Stoke and Richmond. The teams were mixed with some younger and older players, with the country team coming out on top 3-2.

The 31st summer of the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series begins on Thursday, November 9. The season will continue for 18 weekly swims, ending on March 8. Regular sea swimming started in Nelson when Peter Owen of Eyebright put an advertisement
in the Nelson Evening Mail asking for interested swimmers to join him for a dip in the choppy waters off Tahunanui Beach. The Eyebright sea swims continued for two decades, with the Nelson Triathlon Club taking over the organisation under the sponsorship of Port Nelson in 2007. Since then, the series has grown
steadily, with weekly attendance in the region of 150 and numbers climbing to nearly 200 at the peak of the season. Two swims are on offer each week, with a shorter course starting at about 300m and a longer swim of about 800m. The distances climb throughout the season. In addition to the weekly events,
the Clements Endurance Series of four longer swims takes participants on a tour of harbour highlights, with a 3.8km swim on January 14 the longest. The founding connection is kept alive with the annual Eyebright Mile (actually 2km) from the Nelson Yacht Club to Tahunanui Beach on Sunday, December 31. The final Clements swim is the
2.8km circuit of Haulashore Island on Sunday, March 18. In a bonus for Nelson swimmers, the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series comes to Nelson on March 31. Local at Jetboat world champs Steve Page Being familiar with jetboats is only a small advantage when it comes to jetboat racing, especially the seven legs up and down some of the South Island's major rivers. This year was no different, but the boats were. Everything from exhelicopter jet engines pumping out 1500hp to the normal V8’s were on show at the Jetboat World Championship Marathon. And part of that scene is local jetboater and world champs stalwart Rob Pooley. Historically teamed with his brother Mike over many years, they were separate entrants this time around. And this year Mike finished third, while Rob was back in 9th. Running aground in the Dart River leg pushed Rob's time back making a top five finish just out of reach. The event was overshadowed with the tragic death of one of the competitors, Dwayne "Dweeb" Insley,
when he was hit by a log that was exposed at head height after recent flooding in the Waimakariri River. To understand the skill needed by the drivers and navigators, some of these boats cruise at around 110 mph with the jet engine-powered boats capable of 175 mph. In some cases when an obstacle presents itself there is no time to avoid it and, like most boats, there are no brakes. The event was won by a jet powered boat driven by Blenheim's John Derry with Regan Williamson five minutes behind in second, in a boat powered by an ex-Navy Wasp helicopter engine. Nelson Weekly spoke to Regan and asked him about the engine and in particular the maintenance. He said that not only does the engine produce amazing power, they have run it for five seasons. New Zealanders took the first 19 places in the event. Competitors came from NZ, USA and Mexico.

Plenty of bangs on and off the Speedway track Jody Scott The night sky was lit up with an array of lights, colours and sounds in full view of a packed house at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. The Coca-Cola fireworks meeting is Nelson’s premier fireworks display and it didn’t disappoint the many eyes looking skyward on the calm Saturday evening. The display opened with a huge fire ball before the multitude of rockets filled the sky, finishing with a rapid succession of explosions and a double fire ball that lit up the arena. On the track, the stock cars kept the crowd enthralled all night. Roll overs and big hits in every race made for some fantastic viewing. The first to be parked up the wall was Josh Nell, left high and dry by Troy Curry. Dylan Clarke was lucky not to go over again after being rolled last meeting, the car up on two wheels for a long stretch. There will be a few drivers with sore bodies and plenty of work to do on their cars in preparation for the Stock Car Teams Brawl next meeting. The Sprint Cars made their first outing for the season. They will get plenty of track time with a good growth in numbers locally, as they have two rounds of the “War of the Wings Series” plus the South Island title here this year. It was an unfortunate start on heat 1 for Alicia MacLauchlan and Connor Rangi, a second corner crash along the wall leav-
ing Connor upside down in his newly-purchased car, causing some serious damage, Alicia was more fortunate with a flat tyre ending her race. Kris Gerard ran away from Jason Smith in chase, Smith then won the last two races to take out the Trackman Trophy for the night from MacLauchlan and Gerard. The Youth Ministocks were the other grade to make their first meeting of the season. A huge field of 20 cars turned up to raceA few Blenheim cars boosted the numbers along with a few new lo-
cal drivers beginning their racing career. The club has the biggest number of youth competitors in the South Island - the talent coming through will hold the club in good stead for the future. It’s very competitive among the drivers with three separate heat winners, Brayden Nell, Hadley Boyce and Baiden Mailman-Bryman. The first round of the Southern Midget Series was run - regular visitor and South Island Champion Jeremy Webb was a level above the rest of the drivers in heat 1, winning by a country mile. However, major engine failure in the opening laps of heat 2 put him out for the night. It was then a battle between Glen Durie, Tom Lumsden and local driver Gavin Wilkie to fight for the points. It was Lumsden who got on the outside and took a comfortable win. Next meeting is on November 11, the Stock Car Teams Brawl headlines the show with the Nelson Thunder looking to defend their title, plus Sidecars will be in action for the Brett Lusty Memorial and the McCall Trophy between the Nelson Tigers and Glen Eagles.

Saxton Oval will come alive as athletes gather for their respective events before embarking on their chosen challenge throughout the morning. On returning, all participants enter the stadium and complete one lap to the finish where they will be presented with their hardearned medals. RUNNING: One of the country’s original ultra-runners, Nelson’s Colin Rolfe, has passed away less than a month after running in one of his favourite events. Colin, 56, who died suddenly in Christchurch last week, was a former winner of the Kepler Challenge, Dun Run and Abel Tasman Coastal Classic, a race he made his own, competing in all 24 editions since it started in 1994. Colin was renowned as a super-tough competitor, once finishing the Kepler Challenge despite falling and breaking a bone in his leg.
