Local hunters are reeling after an out-of-town company was paid more than $20,000 to cull feral goats, deer and pigs – a job they

say they could have done for free. Nelson City Council contracted Southland-based pest control company Track and Trigger to carry out the pest eradication last month. The operation, which was conducted in the Maitai and Roding

River catchments, was to restore forest health in an area that is home to one of Nelson’s largest intact forest ecosystems. Track and Trigger covered 4700-hectares with a helicopter and killed 136 goats, 41 deer and four pigs at a cost of $22,000 to

Nelson ratepayers. The work will continue over a three-year period as an annual operation and will expand to cover 7200 hectares. However, the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association’s (NZDA) Nelson branch is disappointed

that the perceived problem was not brought to their attention before the out of town tender was awarded. NZDA Nelson club secretary Warren Plum says they have since

Track and Trigger director Jordan Munn says that limited access to hunters is not the only reason they were called in and believes the operation was a success. “The reality is, the site has special values and we would be called in to do the work regardless of recreational hunter access or caretaker efforts,” he says. “The reserve is under serious threat from invasive species, the results from ongoing efforts will prove our work.” He says part of what the company does is going out to look after the environment.

The company building a $125 million retirement village on Nelson’s port hills have hit back against claims that new traffic lights for the development will make Waimea Rd more congested. Construction has already started on the road that will link the new Coastal Views Lifestyle Village on Princes Dr with Waimea Rd. The road will require a new set of traffic lights on one of Nelson’s busiest arterial routes. This will be put at the intersection of the new road, which will also cross the Railway Reserve. The lights are set to be installed within the next four months, at the developer’s cost, but there have been claims that the lights will worsen peak time congestion on Waimea Rd. The developers of the retirement village are Questral Corporation, formally known as Alpine View Retirement Group. The vendor of the land is Gibair Ltd, which is owned by roading contractor Kevin Blair who is behind the connecting Tasman Heights subdivision. Chairman of Questral Corporation, John Ryder, told the

Nelson Weekly that a new road connecting Waimea Rd with Princes Dr would be a “positive thing” and the access to the port hills could have the ability to draw traffic away from Waimea Rd. “I’m no traffic expert, but the advice we’ve received is that it will not make Waimea Rd more congested and that the road can facilitate it,” he says. “The traffic lights are a Nelson City Council requirement. However, we believe it will open up the area due to creating a loop and provide another exit from Waimea Rd.” He says there has been discussion about what the road could mean for the Southern Link. “We would have to facilitate that if it did ever happen.” A traffic assessment report

The village will feature residential units to house up to 300 people, including 180 standalone units, 60 apartments and 50 care beds. An on-site pavilion will also house restaurants, a movie theatre, gym, indoor swimming pool and spa. John says they are close to lodging building permits with the council for the care facility, the first 15 houses and the pavilion. “We expect to start construction in April, subject to consents.” He predicts the development will take five years to complete.

Hampden Street School celebrates 150 years Charles Anderson They may be separated by decades in age but one thing unites Jean Thomas and Lily Barton – they both went to Hampden Street School. The school celebrated its 150th anniversary last week and invited former students in to take a look around and see how much it had changed. Lily, 11, was tasked with showing Jean and her daughter Sue around. It was a last-minute decision for Jean, who now lives in Motueka. “I really wanted to come and see what has changed,” Jean, who at-

tended the school in the 1940s, said. She remembered wearing woollen bathing costumes to go swimming, doing papier-mâché with teachers and heading down to Queens Gardens to do tech class. “It was a wonderful school. It’s changed such a lot.” Lily said it was great to talk to Jean about those changes and get a small insight into how far the school has come. “It’s really interesting seeing what it used to be like. I’m really surprised.” Principal Don McLean said, even after 150 years, the school “seeps history”. “It has got a real history, if you

back then, some would be new immigrants to Nelson straight off

the boat.” Even some of the stories that staff tell each other still permeate, like the one of former principal Mrs Sunderly who died in the early 1900s. “They say she still walks the senior block,” Don said. Almost 200 former students and staff attended the reunion over the weekend with class photos and a formal dinner being organised. The school also opened its new outdoor learning area which features an area of astro turf, bean bags and is bordered with native trees. Don said that it was a special part of the school which stood as a landmark of its 150 years.

NEWS LUCKY ESCAPE FOR BOATIES: Two men had a lucky escape after their boat capsized near Cable Bay on Saturday. Police were alerted at around 6.30pm by a concerned person who saw a boat that they had earlier seen two people fishing from, overturned in the water. Police immediately launched a search and rescue operation to find the occupants. Coastguard, Search and Rescue staff, Surf Rescue teams and a helicopter were all called in to assist with the search. Police also put out a Facebook post to try and locate the owner of the boat and a nearby vehicle. It was this post that the men saw nearly two hours after the search began. A police spokesperson says the men contacted police, after seeing the Facebook post, to let them know they were safe and well. “They reported that the boat had become submerged and they had swum ashore on nearby Pepin Island, from there they rang acquaintances to help them get home.” SUSPICIOUS FIRE: Police are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out last week outside a Nelson preschool. The fire service were called to Healthkids Preschool on Tipahi St about 1am on Friday. The preschool sign, some road cones and part of the fence was on fire. A police spokeswoman said police were making enquiries and investigating the incident. Part of the playground had to be closed as a result and the fire also destroyed the centre’s phone line. A shade sail, part of the fence and a sign at the front of the preschool were also damaged.

Street Hop coming to Nelson Sara Hollyman A roaring street party is on its way to Nelson at the end of this month. The inaugural Street Hop will see music, classic cars, dancing and food take over upper Hardy St on Sunday, October 28, from 10am to 4pm.

The event is being organised by Uniquely Nelson and will raise money for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. More than 120 classic cars from all eras will line upper Hardy St and Morrison Square. Live music will also be accompanied by other entertainment, including for

children, a car auction, charity auction and more. Simon Duffy from Uniquely Nelson says the event will bring something special into the CBD. “We’re really excited. This is a cool event that is family-friendly and will be a heck of a lot of fun while raising money for a really deserv-

Menzshed build replica for Armistice commemorations Amy Russ Memories of World War 1 will soon be rolling into Nelson's CBD thanks to members of Menzshed Waimea. The team took on a project for the Nelson Histrionics Society, to build a replica of the historical railway carriage the ‘Compiegne

Wagon’ in which the First and Second Armistice treaties were signed. The carriage extends over four metres long and just over two metres high. It is to be the centre attraction at the Armistice event, on Trafalgar St, on Sunday, November 11 which will commemorate 100 years of the signing of

the World War 1 Armistice. Menzshed coordinator Alan Kissell says the replica took two weeks to complete and was a team effort. “Graham Fittock built it with the help of Terry Garside and James Chappell, and the Histrionics members did all of the painting.” The Histrionics Society are over

the moon with the carriage. "It is just fantastic," says member Daryl Page. "Look at the detail, it is awesome." The first armistice was signed in the Forest of Compiegne, France on November 11, 1918. Penny Taylor, director for the Nelson event says they are offering a glimpse at what the issues

were from all sides. "The terms of the armistice, which were later embedded into the peace treaties, redefined borders and set in motion changes that helped shape the world as we know it today.” The free event runs from 10am to 3:30pm, November 11, at the top of Trafalgar St.

If you were Icelandic and you happened to have a big night out and lose your passport in New Zealand, it’s very likely that you would be calling on Geiri Petursson to help. He is Iceland’s diplomatic outpost in Aotearoa. He just happens to live in Atawhai. “I’m not really sure how it happened,” he says. Since 2003 he has been Iceland’s honorary consul which gives him broad diplomatic powers, including issuing passports. Iceland does not have an embassy in New Zealand or Australia so Geiri, who is a skipper of fishing vessels, reports to the embassy in China. “But not everyone wants to go to China to get a passport,” he says. Geiri has lived in New Zealand for 20 years and would often port in Nelson while he was working aboard large ships.

60-odd Icelandic families that live in New Zealand and speak-

ing with businesses that want information about travelling to the

Nordic country. “Increasingly, it’s really noticeable that in the last five years there are more Kiwis going to Iceland for tourism. It’s become the hot spot to go to in Europe. Kiwis are a big part of it now. People a lot more aware of it now.” It has a population of about 350,000 people in an area 100,000km2 – making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. He says another little-known fact is that Iceland has an old bilateral agreement with New Zealand which supersedes European Union law. It means that a New Zealander can travel to the EU for three months and then can go to Iceland for a further three months. “90 percent of Kiwis who are going to Iceland are for nature tourism.” These days, Geiri heads back to Iceland every year to see family and his grandchildren. But he is always available. “I’m on call, always.”

Nelson Coastguard volunteer Pete Kara was recognised for his efforts at the Coastguard New Zealand Awards of Excellence earlier this month. Pete won the Communications and Incident Management Volunteer of the Year award. He was recognised for the more than eleven years he has dedicated to Coastguard, where his many roles include being on the Incident Management Team for his own unit, as well as a Board Member for both the Central Region and Coastguard New Zealand. But it is Pete’s unofficial role as unit mentor that is the highlight of his achievements. “Pete has brought into the unit a sense of pride and mana, and has set certain standards that have now become a way of life,” says Coastguard New Zealand CEO, Patrick Holmes. “Coastguard Nelson regularly works with other rescue agencies such as Surf Life Saving and the Police to ensure they are one team saving lives at sea. He also encourages volunteers to think outside the square and values their creativity, fostering a great unit environment where everyone feels appreciated.” A highlight for Pete was when he was on the Incident Management Team for the rescue of two fisherman who spent 11 hours on the water north east of Nelson. Pete’s sound advice and knowledge as the duty officer meant that not only were the fishermen rescued quickly and efficiently, but that the crew rescuing them were looked after and had their safety and wellbeing put first. “Pete is a hardworking, considerate and dedicated volunteer who leads by example and always puts others before himself,” says Patrick. “While he never looks for praise and is a teamplayer through and through, Coastguard Nelson knows that Pete is the glue who holds their unit together and helps them succeed.”

Youth to put some colour in Stoke

Kate Russell A dingy wall in central Stoke is set to get a makeover next month, thanks to some local youth. Whanake Youth, a charitable trust with a focus on youth health and well-being, have received funding from the Mental Health Foundation to paint a mural on the back wall of the Nelson Basketball building on Neale Ave. They are bringing award-winning Auckland artist Charles Williams to Nelson to paint the mural with a group of 15 young people, aged between 13 and 16 years, who have been given a second chance at learning. Charles, who has a connection to one of the students, will lead a workshop around healthy expression of thoughts and feelings through art and help them to compile a plywood triangle that will be incorporated into the mural. Co-director and clinical lead at Whanake Youth, Lee-ann O’Brien, says it was a chance to do something positive for not only the youth involved, but for Stoke too. “We know this wall is part of the history of Stoke but it’s about moving forward with who we have as young people now. “We are wanting to have a visual representation of how our youth feel about their community and give them something they can own, and we hope the local community will come down and see our youth in action.” Lee-ann says the theme for the mural will be ‘build’. “Building relationships with the community - and each other.” The mural will be painted from the 15 - 18 November, but before that happens Lee-ann says they would love some help from the community with getting everything ready. “We need help with supplies such as rollers, paint, spray cans, brushes and plywood, as well as for a working bee on the weekend of 2 - 4 November to waterblast and prep the wall,” says Lee-ann. “We’d like to thank High Reach and Access Hire who have already donated a scissor lift and The Mad Butcher next door for supporting us with kai.” The wall will be unveiled during an event on 18 November Frances Tilly from the Nelson Basketball Association says she is a big supporter of the project. “Putting some colour in Stoke can only be a good thing.” If you can donate supplies or help at the working bee, please contact Rachel Gordon at Whanake Youth on 02102702417 or email rachel.gordon@ whanakeyouth.org.nz

Nelson Matters The reopening of “The Boathouse” on Wakefield Quay last Friday came at the end of a toxic week in Parliament. It reminded me of so much that is good in our community and how lucky we are to live in Nelson. The building was conceived in 1888 by the Nelson Rowing Club but was not completed until 1906. In the 1930s 40s and 50s it was Nelson’s main Saturday night dance venue and was sometimes packed with over a thousand party goers. It fell into disrepair in the 1970s until it got so bad that in 1985 the Nelson Council issued a demolition order. It was saved by the initiative

of Nelson solicitor Nick Moore who corralled 25 other Nelson residents to put up $1,000 each to purchase the building and form the Boathouse Society. The Society’s purpose was to restore the building and encourage recreational and conservational use of the surrounding waterfront and harbour. The Boathouse under the Society’s ownership has been a venue for thousands of community and family events over the past 33 years. Like so many Nelsonians I have shared tears there of joy there at weddings and sadness at funerals. I’ve enjoyed music of every variety and

danced there long and badly. It’s been the venue for dozens of fund raisers and debates over community issues. A special aspect of this venue is that people can retreat on to the deck and soak up the vista of our beautiful harbour, bay and mountains. The devastation wreaked on the Boathouse by Cyclone Fehi on 1 February was gut wrenching to see. The floors were munted and the foundations were extensively damaged. I was inundated with Nelsonians pleas to ensure we saved the Grand Old Dame again. The cost has been more than half a million dollars. I have

There were also contributions from Heritage NZ, Pub Charity, NCC and other generous donors through Give a Little. The bulk of the credit belongs to Society Chair Annie Henry, her capable committee and the dedicated staff led by Manager Amie-Jo Trayes. The stunning new beechwood floors were recovered from cyclone-felled trees in Karamea made possible by legislation I put through Parliament to allow the recovery of wind-blown dead trees. This legislation was

vigorously opposed by the Labour and Green parties, but reinforces my view of practical environmentalism where we can save heritage buildings with wood that would otherwise go to waste. The reopening of The Boathouse is a powerful symbol of the strength of our community spirit, the value we place on heritage and our love of the waterfront. Modellers celebrate 60 years

The Nelson Modellers Association are celebrating their 60th birthday in style on Sunday with events spanning three days. Locals of all ages joined in the celebrations with 12 locomotives offering rides and a parade with all engines, running together. One of the organisers, Reese Cobb, says it was very busy but everyone seemed to be having fun. "The main emphasis for the weekend was for the visitors to have fun and the public to have fun. We had about 70 visitors from around the country who were here solely for the weekend’s celebrations.” Keith Betts and his two sons brought one of their engines, the Phantom 260 1880s American Western, down from the North Island for the weekend. Keith says it was his father’s love of the railway that first gave him "the bug” to get into modelling. "His dream was to work on a railway and it never happened, so this is the next best thing, I guess.” It appears the two boys will be following in their father and grandfather’s footsteps with Kingston taking charge of driving the engine for the day. Lift Off for new

A spectacular hot air balloon night glow on Kaiteriteri beach concluded the inaugural Lift Off Abel Tasman festival over the weekend. Balloons lit up the skies on Kaiteriteri Beach in what is believed to be a world first hot air balloon night glow on a beach. Balloon enthusiasts and skydivers travelled from across New Zealand and beyond to take part in the festival of "aerial adventure and fun". More than 10,000 people flocked to Motueka on Saturday and Kaiteriteri Beach on Sunday to be part of the experience. Stunning sunshine and blue skies helped attract visitors, but the sometimes windy conditions caused a few challenges for balloonists. Event organiser Carsten Buschkuehle, a local tourism operator and keen balloonist, says the event was a hit. “We faced a few challenges inflating and managing the balloons for the evening night glows, but we didn’t want to disappoint the crowds. In the end, the night glows went incredibly

well. All the balloonists really enjoyed taking part in such a fun event. The spectators were fantastic.” Among the balloons taking part was a new Abel Tasman Balloon, a specially commissioned $100,000 balloon with an eyecatching graphic of the Abel Tasman National Park. The Abel Tasman Balloon will now visit other balloons festivals to promote the region. Around 40 skydivers also took part in the festival, completing around 450 jumps. A skydiving New Zealand record was set with a HALO (high altitude, low opening) sky dive at 25,000 feet by local resident Wendy Smith, a 21,000 jump veteran and holder of 10 world records, two Guinness records and an Emmy award. She free fell for 1 minute and 50 seconds at speeds of up to 250 km/hr before opening her parachute just 3000 feet from the ground. The event was the brainchild of local tourism operators and intended as a showcase for the region.

The Kaiteriteri night glow took place just eight days before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are due to visit the Abel Tasman National Park, which is set to further boost the region internationally.

A natural disaster and subsequent rebuild has presented a great opportunity for Nelsonians to rediscover their beloved, iconic waterfront venue, The Boathouse, which is often perceived as a ‘private’ place but is very much available for public use. The Boathouse team eagerly anticipates a busy summer ahead as the venue’s rebuild nears completion. a band playing to packed dance hall every Saturday night. “An elderly gentleman who came up to the bar told me he played in one of the jazz bands back in the day,” says Amie-Jo. “It’s been a sea scout den and a rowing club, but at some stage the clubs have moved on and for a time the building was quite derelict. So in 1984 a few good blokes in a pub got together and decided to save this place, and created a shareholder membership which continues today. It’s a great investment - for $3000, you can buy in and later pass it onto your children, or if you are moving outside the region and want to keep a piece of Nelson with you, you can sell it back to the Boathouse. Membership gets you a key, and on Sundays we don’t hire it out; members can let themselves in, use its beautiful commercial kitchen, the barbeque, sit

out on the gorgeous deck, use the kayaks, paddleboards and moorings, even take a shower.” Members also get a huge discount on hire rates as well as the café and bar. Although membership is an option, the Boathouse is still very much a public venue. “Our café is open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 2pm,” says Amie-Jo. “This is their boathouse and not a private venue at all. People are welcome anytime the café is open. Pop in for a coffee or a glass of local wine; we’ve also got local craft beers on tap and are really kid-friendly, with a special kid’s menu, and a family lounge that’s safe for children. The café continues on a Friday night when we have local, national and international bands in.” The summer months are look-

ing good for The Boathouse on Wakefield Quay. “We are booked solid with gigs and functions. When we had to shut down and find help find people alternative venues, it made us realise how much of a ‘full package’ you get when you hire the Boathouse; everything from a caterer, a licensed bar, furniture, glassware, crockery, cutlery, a mic, a stage and a fantastic team of staff which have been here for years.” The venue is also available for community use, with various groups using it on a weekly basis such as a community choir, a swing dance group and an Alzheimer’s group. Nelson heats up for first Flamenco festival Nelson is to host its first Flamenco and Classical Guitar Festival this summer. Festival director Miles Jackson says the festival promises to be an inspiring week of concerts and musical study, with students choosing between classical and flamenco guitar or flamenco dance. “For the first-time, flamenco and classical guitar styles have been combined. The two genres are closely related, and this gives guitarists the opportunity to learn

more about the style they are less familiar with.” The festival, hosted by the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts (NCMA) from January 13-19, will also offer classes in flamenco dance and singing. It will feature a week-long residential summer school with master classes, ensemble playing, workshops, and concerts. Worldrenowned guitar maker Simon Marty from Australia will present a workshop on how the guitar works.

NCMA also welcomes two international guest performers to Nelson; classical guitarist and composer Vincent Lindsey-Clark from the UK and flamenco specialist David Sinclair from Spain. NCMA director James Donaldson says its new facilities enhance the Nelson School of Music Auditorium with a second state-ofthe-art performance venue and 12 purpose-built teaching spaces, providing an ideal hot-house environment for musicians to gather and share ideas.

“As a recent convert to this region, I can’t imagine a more inspiring place to create and learn music, surrounded by all that Nelson has to offer, in the very heart of New Zealand.” Students will begin the day working in groups with others at their level, before combining in a guitar orchestra each afternoon with composer and Segovia Trio member Vincent Lindsey-Clark. Daily specialist workshops including guitar making and flamenco guitar will augment the programme.

Public concerts every evening will feature the distinguished festival tutors including a special flamenco concert. The final concert on Saturday January 19 will feature the ensemble groups and the combined guitar orchestra. Enrolments are open to students of all ages. Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly sits down to have lunch at Burger Culture with someone interesting doing something interesting. This week we speak to Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan about safety on the water and what to keep in mind as we head into the summer months. So, heading into the summer period, what are you hoping people remember about being safe on the water? We would have lost 11 lives last summer in the region if not for the coastguard and surf lifesavers, because of the number of boats that either capsized or sunk unexpectedly or they ended up in the water. They are all avoidable accidents but, unfortunately, in most of them life jackets weren’t worn. Last summer was scary for us, we were involved in far too many rescues, I’m hoping this summer we won’t have as many. What are the rules around wearing lifejackets in Nelson? In this region it’s compulsory to carry a life jacket in a vessel less than six metres, but not compulsory to wear then yet. I’m hoping the council will see some sense in changing that which will bring us in line with other

What sort of communication should people have? I’m a big believer in VHF radio, but if it’s a cellphone make sure it’s water-proof or in a waterproof container and then make sure it’s on you, it's no good if you can’t get to it. Another excellent tool is a flare. They are cheap and one single flare can be seen 40 miles away. We always have people looking out over the water in this region. So what are the key points for people to remember? Have a lifejacket, have some sort of communication, check the weather and be wary of alcohol. I’m a great believer in having a beer when you go boating, but only one or two. As soon as you are over the limit you are making the same mistakes. I think people can be sensible. The best thing is to avoid alcohol altogether when you go boating. The last emphasis is on the skipper responsibility. If we can get that ingrained in people going boating we will have a good safe summer.

Stoke/Nayland make a statement in club cricket comp Jonty Dine The newly-revamped Tasman premier one-day cricket competition got underway on Saturday, with defending champions Stoke/ Nayland declaring itself a serious contender to win back-to-back titles. The Tasman-wide competition has been expanded to two full rounds of one-day play, culminating in semi-finals and a final scheduled for March 30, 2019. With the withdrawal from senior cricket of Wanderers, just seven sides will do battle for the Kelvin Scoble Trophy this season – the Falcons and Dolphins from Marlborough, plus Wakatu, ACOB, Stoke Nayland, Nelson College and WTTU from Nelson. After a clean sweep across all formats in last year’s premier cricket season, Stoke/Nayland made a dominant start to its 201819 campaign, crushing rivals Waimea Toi Toi by seven wickets at Marsden Recreation Ground.

Pari Pari's big year ends with NZ Maori call up Jonty Dine Reporter

While its season may be over, the Mako’s breakout star for 2018 isn’t done bruising bodies just yet. On the back of a barnstorming Mitre10 Cup campaign, Pari Pari Parkinson was selected in the 27-man New Zealand Maori squad to tour the Americas in November, along with fellow Mako Tyrel Lomax. Pari Pari (Te Whanau a Apanui) carries on in the footsteps of his uncle Matua Parkinson and says it is an incredibly proud moment for him and his family. “I never write my goals down, but that has always been one of mine.” He was one of nine new names in the Maori squad which will take on the USA, Brazil and Chile. After a stellar year with Tasman, consistency will now be the key for Pari Pari. “Now it’s not just about getting in there but staying there and staying consistent.”

Pari Pari produced a herculean performance in a losing effort to Canterbury on Friday night, ending the Mako’s Premiership hopes. “It is what it is, it obviously sucks, we wanted to go further, and I think we had the team to do it, but it just wasn’t our day.” Pari Pari says the clinical Cantaburians simply took their chances while the Mako failed to throw the killer punch. “It’s a game of moments and they just won the little moments.” He says the season is one the side will reflect on with pride. “We had a little hiccup at the start of the season, but we pulled ourselves together, we had some short turnarounds and always managed to front up.” Pari says the squad's focus has changed now, “We couldn’t get the W tonight, so now we will make sure we spend time with the boys who won’t be here next year.” A strong brotherhood has been the catalyst for the Mako making the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. “Being part of that great culture

was the best part for me.” He says the Mako faithful is another factor which drives the side. “We always have a good bunch of supporters here in Nelson and the young fullas always come out, which is awesome.” The 2.04m, 120kg gargantuan hopes to one day repay that faithful with a premiership title. “I am definitely keen to come back next year and beyond,” he says. However, for now, Pari Pari’s sights are set on national duties as he prepared to take on the United Sates on November 4. Coach Clayton McMillan says Pari Pari’s physical presence helped catch his eye. "Pari Pari has to be the tallest lock running around in New Zealand rugby at the moment and he’s been a stand out for Tasman.” Maori All Blacks American tour: USA in Chicago on November 4 (12pm NZ time), Brazil in Sao Paulo on November 11 (11am NZ time), Chile in Las Condes on November 18 (9am NZ time).

Age on barrier for table tennis star Jonty Dine

Glenda Ferguson’s love of table tennis began in a Mosgiel garage at age 11. Now in her late sixties, the Nelson Table Tennis Club veteran was the oldest player competing at the recent national interclub tournament, squaring off against players five decades her junior. Glenda won silver with her team in the B grade, defeating Manawatu 5/2 to finish second. “It was a real upset,” she says.

During her run, Glenda came up against a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old, pitting the oldest and youngest players against each other. The youngster from Waikato eventually prevailed in the fifth set. Glenda says she uses her steadiness and cunning to try outwit much younger players. “It just comes with experience.” Also in the Nelson team was Glenda’s daughter, Kylie Collett. Glenda’s family ties to the table have always been strong.

Her father began the Rovers Table Tennis Club in Mosgiel to help keep troubled youth off the street. Making her national debut at just 14-years-old, Glenda went on to win a host of Otago and Taieri titles. After taking a few years away from the sport to have three children in Christchurch, Glenda made the move to the Top of the South and joined the Nelson Club in 1983 from where she has represented the region in countless competitions.

It was here that the next generation of her family took to the table. “Our three girls began playing too and in 1985 all three represented Nelson in a New Zealand U15 tournament.” Glenda says her most memorable moment came in 1995, playing with daughters Leisa and Kylie in Whangarei. “We won the C grade but the highlight was winning the Barna Cup ahead of 20 other women’s teams." This was judged on 40 different

categories including sportsmanship, punctuality and friendliness. “This meant more to me than winning the competition, especially with all of us in the same family.” She says the social aspect and exercise keeps her in the game. “It’s just something I have always done, it’s part of my life.” Glenda says she plans to keep playing until she is sick of it. “We just had a club member retire at 97, I don’t think I’ll be playing that long.”

The sun shone on Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway as they celebrated their 50th anniversary over Labour Weekend. The opening meeting of the season highlighted a few former NZ champions making the start line, local Shane Harwood and Kihikihi’s Jared Wade featuring in the Super Stock grade, Simon Bland, Rob Flood and current T.Q. champion Jeremy Webb amongst some of the visiting drivers competing on the night. The Trackman Trophies were up for grabs in all grades, with a good number back in the hands of defending champions; Alex Hill –Super Stocks, Jeremy Webb - T.Q., Keightley Teece - Stock Car and the Side Car pairing Adie Drake and Kieran Satherley

all defending their titles. New winners were Ashton Osborne in Youth Ministocks, Simon Bland in Street Stocks and Shane Carey in Super Saloons. The John Pomeroy Cup for driver of the night also went to Shane Carey, but it was an expensive win with his engine expiring shortly after his feature win. The Classic Stock cars turned back the time with a few of the models that have been raced over the past 50 years, Pete and Rob Anglesey racing two local cars from yesteryear. It was a great way to celebrate the racing, the big crowd enjoying some close battles with results only being decided on the final laps. A full clubroom of past and present members was on hand to celebrate the wins before a formal dinner held on Sunday. The next meeting is on November 3 with the annual Coca-Cola fireworks display.

The Orphans In the 19th century being an orphan did not necessarily mean you had no parents. In 1872 the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Mission established an orphanage at Manuka Street in Nelson.

FOOTBALL: Tasman United has opened its season with a 3-1 loss to competition heavyweights Auckland City, however a nasty injury to goalkeeper Corey Wilson overshadowed the result. The opening round of the 2018-19 season saw Tasman travel to the City of Sails to take on the defending champions, the visitors only managing an own goal against the powerhouse club. Auckland dominated the match, scoring three clinical goals to claim the points. However, it was late in the fixture that Corey Wilson collided with an Auckland City player in a nasty clash. The match was delayed significantly as both players were taken to hospital. Tasman United return home this Sunda to take on Hamilton Wanderers at Trafalgar Park. Kick off 2pm. SPEED SKATING: Nelson is making a strong claim for South Island Speed Skating supremacy. A total of 56 speed skaters competed from Dunedin, Timaru, Christchurch, Blenheim and Nelson in the Southern Speed Skating Competition in

SpOrtS Timaru last month, with Nelson claiming more than 50 medals. The 23 Nelson skaters claimed 27 gold medals, 24 silver and eight bronze. They also earned 16 PB's for time trials. Holly Ward placed first in the Junior girl’s 300m time trial and 1500m, second in the 800m and 3000m, and third in the 5000m. Holly also won silver in the 1500m relay with Mikaela McDonald and Charlotte Scott. Blake McCormack and Liam McDonald dominated the juvenile boy’s grade with first and second places over all the races. As a junior skater, Jamie Manson put in great performance to achieve a 5th placing in the men’s 5000m open. BASKETBALL: The Mike Pero Nelson Giants will have a new head coach carrying the clipboard next year. NZ Breakers assistant coach and former Giant Mike Fitchett will take over from Jamie Pearlman as head coach of the NBL franchise next season. Mike has been an assistant coach of the NZ Breakers

since 2017 and is also an assistant coach with Tall Blacks since 2017. He says he is looking forward to the opportunity with the team he grew up watching and then playing for over nine seasons. HOCKEY: Nelson hockey star Anita McLaren (nee Punt) has called time on her esteemed career. Anita began her playing days at Waimea College, moving on to the then Richmond Ladies Hockey Club. She played representative hockey for Nelson before being selected for the Capital regional team and eventually for the Black Sticks. She was honoured with the captaincy for a period and went on to record over 270 games for New Zealand, also achieving accolades as the Black Sticks Women’s leading goal scorer with 105.
