public cameras dotted around the region which live streams Nelson to the world. And the world is watching. Paul Jeffries, from the 10-yearold company says that, perhaps unsurprisingly, its live streaming camera at Kaiteriteri is its most

popular. “In summer we can get up to 7000 people a day tuning in,” he says. “It gets people from all over the world. We assume it’s those who might have visited before and want to relive the experience a little bit.” The camera sits on top of a local

you’ll be in the dark for so long and suddenly there’s something that hits you, like the sunrise, and things get better,” Alison says. “It’s a very worthy cause, mental health touches people across the board,” there’s no age range, there’s no gender, mental health doesn’t discriminate, and it’s great to see the stigma disappearing.” Alison says the event works as a positive way to destigmatise mental health, offers help to those who need it, and encourages conversation on depression and mental health.

Paul says the St Arnaud camera, which overlooks Lake Rotoiti, gets the second most views with about 5000 people watching on good days. Those days, however, are usually when it has snowed or the alpine town has experienced some changeable weather. “But also because the weather

can be so different there, people from Nelson want to make sure that it’s looking alright for a visit.” People are also quick to point out whenever there is an issue with the camera. “It won’t be long before we get people contacting us, telling us we need to take a look at it.” The Tasman District Council has two cameras looking out over the Richmond Plains. Paul says the council uses them to check air quality. It might seem curious that peo-

ple want to watch the world in real time but the trend is part of a global phenomenon that sees little known cities and towns being subject to close scrutiny. Jackson, Wyoming, in the United States recently became an unusual hit for its livestream camera of one of its intersections. The camera reaches thousands of people who tune in each day. “I think it might be to do with people just wanting to be a part of something and know what’s going on even though they might

not be there,” Paul says. He says that part of what they offer is not just a purpose-built camera but also the ability to watch the fruits of its filming. “It’s one thing to have a camera but it’s another of how to get the footage from there to a computer,” Paul says. The company has thousands of terabytes of footage that it has stored over the years. So one day those comings and goings of people and weather might also become part of historical record.

Fishermen pulled from sinking boat Brittany Spencer Reporter

It was stocked with all the right gear but nothing was going to stop a small Nelson boat from sinking. Three men were out fishing on a small vessel just a mile from Nelson Harbour on Saturday when their boat started taking on water. The boat then capsized and became submerged, leaving the three boaties floating in the water. Coastguard Nelson president Wayne Harrison says the men had gone out for an early morning fish and were just setting up when one of the guys noticed that his feet were wet. “The next thing he knew the boat was sinking, the back went down, a wave came in and it just went, it flipped them out and they were all in the water.” Wayne says that despite having all the right equipment, including fitted life-jackets, flares, life rings, sufficient fuel, and two forms of communication, it happened so quickly that none of the men had time to raise the alarm.

The trio were in the water for 25 minutes before a passing boat picked them up, and brought them back to the Wakefield Quay wharf. Fortunately, Coastguard Nelson were just getting ready for their Saturday morning training as the emergency call came in. “We were standing in our training room and our duty officer Geoff Morgan came in and said ‘we’ve got a job’. We actually saw the boat bringing the guys in as the call was coming in.” Several members went down

to the wharf to meet the men and brought them back to the base to warm up while the rest of the team went out to find the boat. “When we got to the boat, there wasn’t much of it sticking up out of the water,” says Wayne. “We got a line onto the trailer hook, pulled it out of the water, righted it, pumped it out, collected all the debris and personal belonging floating in the sea, towed it all back in to the marina for them.” All three fishermen were unharmed.

NEWS Accolades for Cawthron: Scientists at New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation, the Cawthron Institute, have been honoured with a string of accolades. Cawthron Institute Chief Executive Professor Charles Eason CRSNZ has been awarded the Thomson Medal by the Royal Society Te Apārangi. The Thomson Medal is awarded for outstanding contributions to the organisation, support, and application of science or technology in New Zealand and was awarded to Professor Eason for outstanding leadership in his research career and for his achievements as head of the Cawthron Institute. Teaching children safety: Clued Up Kids will be returning this month, educating local primary school-aged children on how to stay safe in a variety of real-life scenarios. Last year 450 students took part in the programme at the Richmond Showgrounds. It offers hands-on activities including a ‘shaky house’ for practicing what to do in an earthquake, a simulation teaching children how to react during a house fire, as well as demonstrations on water safety, interacting with dogs, road safety and first aid. Change of direction for Santa Parade Kate Russell

Santa Claus is literally ‘coming to town’ this year as the annual Nelson Santa Parade changes its route. Instead of the usual Church Steps to Trafalgar Park direction, this year the parade will start at Trafalgar Park, run down Trafalgar and Hardy Sts, finishing at Morrison Square for the Christmas Carnival.

Parade organiser Huup Waagen says the “improved” direction of the parade is thanks to an “exciting” new collaboration between the Nelson Santa Parade Trust, Rotary, Nelson Weekly/Nelson App, Uniquely Nelson and Morrison Square. “We are so excited about the changes, because Santa Claus will actually be coming to town this year – not leaving it.”

He says Morrison Square will become a festive zone following the parade - even the Santa himself will be making an appearance. “All we need now are some parade entries and to encourage people to start building we’ll have two cash prizes of $500 up for grabs, for the most creative entry and for the group with the most participants.” Huup says that the trial sum-

Tahunanui Playgroup celebrates 30 years Kate Russell Reporter

In December 1987 an old darts hall on Muritai Street was transformed into a thriving community playgroup. Now 30 years on, the Tahunanui Playgroup is set to celebrate three fun-filled decades at the site and is calling on the local community to help them “piece together” its history for a reunion at the end of the month. Playgroup supervisor Cushla Vass says the roots of the playgroup go back even further to 1978 when a mothers’ group was established at the St Stephens hall and then in 1984 as a crèche at one the Braemar villas donated by the Nelson Hospital Board. Once they had moved to the Muritai St site, it quickly expanded into an early childhood centre as well as the Tahunanui Community Centre which moved into the next door building in 2016. “Staff have been looking back through old albums of photos and hope that anyone who attended, either as a parent or a child, will get in touch to share their photos and stories,” says Cushla. “We know some of the faces, but there are a few blanks we’d like to

vides more than just fun and games for babies through to preschoolers. It now operates as a playgroup on Mondays and as a preschool from Tuesday – Friday.

The playgroup reunion is an 80s themed party and will be held on Friday 27 October at the Tahunanui Community Centre from 6pm. Tickets are $25 from the centre

Nelson 'should be first' to be plastic bag free Charles Anderson Journalist

Sue Craig-Stewart has owned the same reusable shopping bags for almost all her life. Even when she moved to New Zealand she brought them with her, all the way from England. She started her mission 30 years ago when she was living in Miami beach and noticed how every morning the council would rake the sand for rubbish so people didn’t have to sunbathe amid discarded plastic bags. “I started thinking maybe they should just leave it so people would see the damage that was being done and maybe start being more accountable.” Since then she has never used plastic bags for shopping. Sometimes she will reuse them by washing them out. Now, after living in New Zealand, she thinks it is time for a more radical shift in people’s plastic bag use. “If we can’t go plastic bag free in New Zealand, then that’s pathetic,” she says. “And Nelson could lead that charge.” Recycling has increased by 28 per cent since the introduction of new Tasman District and Nelson city recycling bins in 2015.

The total amount of recycling material diverted from landfills though council kerbside recycling services in Nelson and Tasman is now 6500 tonnes, compared to 5656 recorded in 2010. However, this is against the backdrop of a general increase in waste. Sue says that the advent of soft

plastic recycling at supermarkets sends the wrong message as it encourages people to keep using them. She also thinks that supermarkets putting a 10 to 20c levy on plastic bags is not enough to halt their use. Despite Countdown and New World saying they will phase out plastic bags, Sue thinks other stores also

need to step up and follow suit. She says that companies are underestimating the value that branded hessian bags can have. “You could even make that a loyalty scheme where buyers get a discount for bringing in the shop’s bag.” However, Sue acknowledges that she is fighting against habit,

which is hard to change. “But it’s not rocket science, after unloading the shopping you just make sure you put your bags back in the car.” She says plastic bags are “just the tip of the iceberg” and says there is another huge challenge in reducing the amount of plastic used in food packaging.

Rackley 'humbled' by boxing honour Locally Owned and Operated

Jeff Rackley rose to his feet and started his speech with a lump in his throat and a tear in his eyes. “Well, this is a shock,” he started. “I’m humbled, I really am.” Jeff had just been appointed patron of the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust in a surprise ceremony at the trust’s Vanguard St gym last Friday. Victory Boxing chair John Armstrong says Jeff was the perfect person to be patron for the group. A man with “mana”, who volunteers his time in the gym and has an unrivalled pedigree in the sport. Since leaving his job as a real estate agent in March, Jeff is in the gym five times a week and even travels to tournaments with some of the younger fighters. Coordinator Paul Hampton says having that experience is invaluable. “Jeff is a guy who people in the gym look up to. He’s happy to offer a bit of advice and generally help out. I heard him talk to some Waimea Intermediate students a couple of weeks ago, talking about respecting others and how the gym is an important space. He said having a place like this would have been fantastic when he was growing up.” Jeff started boxing training while still at primary school and was famously coached by his father Les, who help Jeff and his three brothers

Jeff says he enjoyed boxing as a youngster and went on to fight in 100-odd amateur fights and seven professional bouts. He won the Jameson Belt three times for being the most “scientific” boxer at the national championships and fought in the last 15 round professional fight in the country, a fight he won. At 22 he represented New Zealand at the Munich Olympic games as a boxer, before he came back to teach physical education at Nayland College. Two years in the UK followed where he played rugby and cricket, two sports he represented Nelson at, including a famous game against Australia at Trafalgar Park in 1972. As a rugby player Jeff was a flanker-cum-hooker and in cricket, an opening batsman.

When he came back to Nelson after his time in the UK, Jeff worked at the now-defunct Nelson Fisherman's Co-op before buying the Black Cat dairy with his wife Karen. They owned that for two years before they reached an agreement to buy the Prince Albert Hotel. They sold the dairy to make the deal happen, only for it to fall through. That started Jeff in the real estate game where he started at Harcourts before founding Haven Reality with Darryl Marshall and Jane Paynter in the early 1990s. Outside of work, Jeff is a past president of Nelson Bays Rugby Union, is currently president of Nelson Cricket Association, earned a Queen’s Service Medal for services to the community in 2008, was a Nelson City councillor from 2010 to 2013 and ran the

popular Haven Sports Trust dinner which raised money for young athletes in Nelson for decades. It’s quite a life the father and grandfather has had, and part of the reason Paul says Victory Boxing were keen to make him their patron. “He’s a guy from here, he went to Victory School, he was a fantastic boxer and he has done a lot outside of sport, too. These all fit perfectly with what we do here," says John. "We’re a community group first and foremost and respecting others and trying to help people be the best they can be.” Jeff says the certificate will take pride of place in a new apartment he and Karen are building. "I arrive here every day and I've got a smile on my face. What Paul and his team has done here is just magic."

Whether you plan on doing the Coast to Coast or want to paddle for fitness, these are the go-to kayaks. The newest kayak discipline is packrafting. Inflatable pack rafts can weight as little as 2-3kg and will pack down small enough to carry in your pack. This opens up so many rivers and waterways that would otherwise be impractical to access.

Red Cross broadens first aid courses Kate Russell Reporter

Lisa Mellish has always had a passion to save lives, and now she is helping more Nelsonians to do the same by offering more first aid courses in the region. New Zealand Red Cross has recently welcomed Lisa as their training coordinator for Nelson and Marlborough, and team leader for the Nelson New Zealand Red Cross Disaster Welfare Support Team. Born and bred in Havelock she spent time overseas, 12 years on the West Coast, and moved to Nelson three years ago. From the army, running emergency management training and courses, working as an ambulance officer, Civil Defence and for Red Cross as the West Coast Disaster Welfare Support Team where she was deployed to the Christchurch earthquakes and Pike River Mine disaster – Lisa has an impressive background. “And now I’ve come back to Red Cross into this role and I’m

way of first aid and will be introducing new first aid courses next year. One of them will be outdoor first aid - a course she thinks there is a

“real need for” in the region. “I think it’s important – especially in the Tasman area.” She’ll also be introducing prehospital emergency care and

psychological first aid, which is a ‘best practice’ approach to providing initial emotional and practical support to someone who has experienced a traumatic event. “It builds organisational and community resilience and people’s capacity to respond well to traumatic events and is recommended for anyone who may have a role in supporting staff, colleagues, community members or whanau,” she says. “My aim is to broaden the scope of what’s available - there is so much more we can offer, and will offer, moving forward.” Lisa says other courses can also be tailored to meet people’s needs, such as work place first aid, first aid for new mothers, sports first aid, or first aid for forestry groups, schools and clubs. “I’ve had people come in with all sorts of needs, but the bottom line is helping people and educating them in first aid.” To find out more information on Red Cross first aid courses in Nelson, go to www. redcross.org.nz/first-aid/bookcourse/?region=nelson

Prepartion for Masked Parade begins

Brittany Spencer The Masked Parade may still be 10 days away but some Nelson students made the most of their school holidays, creating colourful hula hoops for the big day. On Thursday, Nelson Samba Collective’s holiday programme at Community Artworks harnessed the creativity of kids ahead of the ‘We are the World’ Masked Parade. The kids connected plumbing pipes together, fastened the ends with wood and tape, before decorating the DIY hoops with sparkly and colourful tape. Nelson City councillor Gaile Noonan says it was great to get among the fun and she’s looking forward to the parade. “Having these workshops for kids in the school holidays is awesome and I’m amazed because they’re making everything from scratch, it’s really cool.” Gaile says this year’s parade is already shaping up to be bigger than ever with over 3,000 people set to swamp the city centre with colour on Friday, October 27 starting at 5:30pm. This year, the route has changed with the parade beginning in Montgomery Square, walking along Bridge St, parading up Trafalgar St, before connecting on to Morrison Street and then looping back to Montgomery Square.

You should not be worse off for having another adult in your home, provided they are paying their way and behaving fairly. Occasionally adult children get stuck in a ‘childs mind-set’ and expect parents to pay for their upkeep. This is not normal or reasonable.

 Make a boarding agreement that states expected payments and other particulars:  Full board for an adult should be $200-250 per week  Note what the board includes and any specific exclusions  State how and when the board is to be paid  What is the notice period to end the agreement?  You can state how the boarder is to contribute with chores/cooking  You can include rules about the boarders visitors, noise, pets and other house rules Remember, capable adults are responsible for their own upkeep, regardless of whether they have parents. Science and technology is alive and well in Nelson – and thanks are due to Thomas Cawthron who died just over 100 years ago, on 8 October 1915. Through life Thomas Cawthron had excelled at making money; death provided an opportunity to gift it. He left instructions that the residue of his estate – equivalent to around $115m today – be used to erect and maintain an institute devoted to science and technology. This was duly done and Cawthron Institute has grown from five scientists in 1919 to around 220 today. To mark his death, around 50 Cawthron Institute staff and trustees took the opportunity to walk, cycle or run to Thomas Cawthron’s gravestone at Wakapuaka cemetery. Cawthron Institute Trust Board Chair Bob Dickinson says Thomas Cawthron’s legacy to Nelson goes much wider than the Institute. "Thomas Cawthron had amassed a substantial fortune through interests in mining, shipping and well-placed investments during the second half of the nineteenth century. After retiring in 1884, he began thinking about ways to use this money for good.” Quietly, Cawthron helped many individuals suffering hardship, and contributed to relief funds, church organisations and educational endeavours. He also made more public donations. Cawthron's appreciation of culture is reflected in gifts of money towards a library, museum, the Nelson School of Music, and its organ, and the impressive granite steps leading to Nelson Cathedral. Cawthron showed his care for others through gifts to Nelson's Public Hospital, the Nurses Home, and extending the chain-links on Rocks Road (to enhance safety). Finally, his environmental interest was reflected in gifting the 1000ha Cawthron Park in the head of the Maitai and Roding catchments. These earlier gifts to the city were worth around $12m in today's terms. The walk to Cawthron’s gravestone coincided with the start of the Institute’s “RACE” season; RACE stands for Rewarding Active Cawthron Employees. Cawthron Institute has an active workplace wellness programme, which supports staff to achieve healthy, happy, and productive lives. Cawthron Institute’s Health and Safety Advisor, Jessica Trott, says “Cawthron’s biggest resource is its people. It’s important to us that we provide a workplace that encourages and sustains positive physical and mental health.” Interestingly, one important way to wellbeing is to give: your time, words and presence, as well as money. Thomas Cawthron is an outstanding example of someone who gave generously of all these things. You may choose to follow his leadership and create your own legacy. At 14-years-old, Jack Roberts finally has his first bike - and he can’t quite believe it. “This is the bestest day of my life,” said the Stoke teenager, as he was presented with his two-seat custom-made trike at Nayland College on Saturday. A rare genetic disease called Kabuki Syndrome, which causes low muscle tone, prevents Jack from riding normal bikes - the only one he can ride comes with a hefty $10,000 price tag. Nelson Weekly told Jack’s story back in July, and it took less than three months for

the Nelson community to rally around him and raise the money to buy the trike. And despite having a chest infection, Jack made it down to his school for the ‘surprise reveal’. “Is it really mine?” he asked, as around 50 supporters, including family, friends and money donors erupted in applause. “He had no idea at all,” says his mum, Sue Roberts. “He even went outside on Sunday morning to check if the bike was real, and that it wasn’t just a dream.” The trike allows someone to sit next to Jack and pedal too, and Saturday’s first ride was especially reserved for his good friend Jared.

“He was absolutely elated, being able to ride like all the other kids,” says Sue. She adds that they have been “overwhelmed” with the support, from the free helmets from The Cycle Shop in Stoke, Mainfreight for getting the trike to Nelson, to everyone who donated. Special thanks were given to the IHC for kick-starting the fundraising campaign and the Nelson Host Lions Club who donated around half of the total cost, as well as their labour for building a shed for the trike. “When we started this idea of getting a bike for Jack and found out how much it was going to cost, I felt it would never happen,” says Sue.

“It is heart-warming to be on the receiving end of such kindness and we are grateful for every dollar that was donated.” Sue says that the trike will be “life-changing” for Jack. “Because of his low muscle tone, walking is not an option. He goes swimming once a week but that’s the only extra activity he gets, so cycling will give him a different form of exercise, boosting his physical and mental health.” And, alongside his wheelchairs, fondly named Betsy and Vinnie, Jack has yet to decide on a name for the trike. “It will no doubt get a name – it’s his thing,” says Sue.

A group of Nelson women are hoping to sponsor an Eritrean refugee family, which has already tragically lost their mother, under a new community scheme announced by the government this month. Saralinda MacMillan, Susan O’Connell and Anna Stevens last year found out about the plight of Solomon and his two young daughters who are Eritrean refugees living in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Solomon’s wife disappeared two years ago while desperately trying to seek asylum in Europe and now Saralinda and her friends want to help Solomon and his daughters get out of the country safely. Saralinda says she found out about the family through her sister-in-law Phyllis Buton who is a lecturer at Sydney University. Phyllis supervises a medical researcher, Stephanie Johnson, who had been doing voluntary hospital work in Addis Ababa and was contacted by Solomon. “Solomon walked into the UN offices over there and saw a form for refugees applying to get to New Zealand and contacted Stephanie about it,” Saralinda says. “She told

Phyllis about it and Phyllis mentioned it to me and I said ‘I’d see what I can do to help’, so that’s how it started.” Saralinda says the timing is perfect because the government has just introduced a trial community-based refuge sponsorship category that is separate to the existing quota system. She talked to Anna and Susan about it and they, along with Stephanie and UK journalist Anne Little, who used Solomon as a translator when she was working in Ethiopia, started raising funds to meet the sponsorship criteria. The community-based

scheme requires the sponsors to fund domestic travel from the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre to their new home, arrange accommodation and furniture and help place the refugees in a job. Saralinda says they are already well on the way to raising sufficient funds to help Solomon and his family, but urgently need backing from a registered legal entity to meet the last piece of the sponsorship criteria. Saralinda says Nick Mason of Pitt and Moore Lawyers in Nelson has already helped, providing free legal services for the group’s bid to save

Now all they need is an appropriate organisation to help the group meet all the scheme’s criteria. “It’s urgent, because the applications for the community refugee sponsorship close at the end of November and if we miss that we’ll have to wait another year,” she says. “The girls have already lost their mother and Solomon is doing his best to care for them under difficult conditions, but they need to get out.” Anyone who wants to help can contact Saralinda by emailing hsmacmillan@xtra. co.nz

Te Ara Koa track ready to ride A brand new jewel in Nelson’s mountain bike crown was revealed last week with the opening of the trail on Fringed Hill, which has been named Te Ara Koa Trail (trail to happiness).

What to do with plastic bags and other soft plastics?

Nelson City Council contracted the Nelson Mountain Bike Club to construct the trail, which is one of the longest purpose-built single track mountain bike trails in the country. The resulting intermediate grade track is 5.1km long and descends 700 vertical metres. The trail's intermediate grading means a wide range of riders will be able to enjoy it. The work has had huge support from Club volunteers, with around 120 people getting involved in a final one day push to finish the track off. Deputy Chair of the Sport and Recreation Committee,

Mike Rutledge, was one of the first to ride Te Ara Koa and says, “It is another exciting ride that should go on everyone’s list of “must do” rides in Nelson. “The length and quality of Te Ara Koa Trail, along with the other rides in the area, will give visitors a reason to spend that extra time in Nelson, so it will have great benefits for both locals and tourists, with the potential to add to our tourism revenue," says Councillor Rutledge. “The Club and its volunteers have done an awesome job of the construction, and I encourage other keen mountain bikers to give this great new trail a try this summer".

Flood protection and affordability key to Modellers' Pond Delivering a long term solution to protect Tahunanui homes from flooding will be a key focus of a detailed business case, which is being developed to consider the range of options associated with the Modellers’ Pond. The Sport and Recreation Committee has decided to put the upgrade of the Modellers' Pond on hold for this current financial year (2017/18), while that business case is prepared. Its focus will be on pinpointing a long-term solution that incorporates the essential role the pond plays as part of the Tahunanui storm water and flood management infrastructure, at an affordable price. Council has been working with the Modellers' Pond Project Group throughout the year and had signed off the detailed design of modifying the existing pond. This allowed for a detailed physical cost estimate to be finalised, which exceeded the amount provided to Council earlier this year ($1.2M) by $530,000.

While the efforts of the Modellers Society and the Project Group to raise external funding has been commendable, the challenge was too great to meet the additional dollars required for the project to continue. In the meantime, manual cleaning of the pond will continue in order that the Modellers Society can host the Modellers International Convention in January. Chair of the Sport and Recreation Committee Tim Skinner says, “We can all agree that ongoing maintenance with no end point in sight is not cost effective, practical or viable. “We must focus on finding the most suitable way forward, which allows us to deliver a value for money solution that also recognises the essential storm water function of the pond. As staff said, in heavy rainfall events an estimated 1.5 – 1.8 cubic metres of water per second enters the pond. That’s the equivalent of an old VW Beetle coming at you every second! The pond plays an essential role in keeping Tahunanui homes safe from flooding, and this will be part of the detailed business case,” says Councillor Skinner.

Council and Club cement partnership Nelson City Council and the Nelson Mountain Bike Club have cemented their long-standing working relationship with the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement gives some direction as to how the organisations will work together, and establishes a working group to ensure good communication on both sides. Chair of the Sport and Recreation Committee, Tim Skinner, says “The relationship between Council and the Club has been crucial in growing the sport in our area. Working in partnership, we have been able to develop some amazing assets.

up owning twenty-two acres of flat farmland adjoining the famous Globe Hotel at Waitapu, Nellie became the licensee for this hotel. Albert died in Nelson Public Hospital in 1931 and Nellie and Myrtle stayed on in Takaka where Nellie started to accumulate real estate over the ensuing years, buying the Junction Hotel on Commercial St and the Telegraph Hotel. When Nellie began to suffer abdominal problems she was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and later endured several bouts of surgery which saw the removal of most of her digestive organs. She continued her interest in property investment, purchasing three properties in Tahunanui.

The first was a garage/service station on the corner of Bisley Ave and Rocks Rd, which she used to watch from her home on the hillside, with binoculars, monitoring the amount of petrol being sold from her pumps. In 1933, Nellie and Myrtle were thinking of retiring to Nelson and, with Nellie’s help, Myrtle bought a block of land on Bisley Ave. On July 2, 1943, Nellie passed away and was buried next to her husband at Wakapuaka cemetery. Nellie’s will ensured that her daughter Myrtle was looked after, along with any children she may have, however, the will also directed that in the event of Myrtle’s death without issue, the

trustees should establish and maintain at Tahunanui “in my memory a library and rest room, to be known as ‘Nightingale Library Memorial’. It was some time before Nellie’s three trustees were able to execute the wishes of the will, however, in 1973, forty years after Nellie had died, Nelson City Council was advised that the value of the bequest was assessed at $134,000, which had come from mortgage holdings and the sale of the Telegraph Hotel at Takaka. Work finally started on the library in 1978 and on December 8, 1978, the building was opened by Mayor Roy McLennan. In July 2017, Nightingale Library Memorial was closed temporarily so that it could undergo improvements. “It was starting to be not fit for purpose, we needed more sitting areas for people to use devices and Wifi. Because it wasn’t very inviting the numbers were dropping, whereas, already since it’s been opened up people are wanting to come and use the space and we want to grow its use. The meeting room has always been popular but it’s been quite separate and now we’re bringing it all in to one useable space,” says Cat Cliffin, Team Leader Service Delivery for Nelson City Council. The building has undergone a number of physical changes, including a modernised lobby. “Originally the lobby would have been a courtyard and then at some point they’ve just put a corrugated iron roof over it and that was basically it,” says Cat. “They’d put a few electrical points in too, but the lobby was a really dark, dingy, cold space, so this has now been roofed properly and insulated.” Heading into the main library area, a small office space had been located in the middle with two doors on either side. Now the office sits to one side with a large open entrance leading to a more spacious library, thanks to the removal of some of the shelves. The toilets have also been modified so that people can enter them from inside the building, while a new wooden ramp allows for easier access for all library users. The interior has also received a paint job, creating a much lighter and more welcoming environment. Other improvements include a new service desk, new carpets and the installation of a new heating system. On Sunday the library held its grand reopening, marking the occasion with a world record attempt for the most children taking part in Story Time. As this particular record has not been set before, the more than 30 local kids who attended on Sunday will be the ones to beat in the fu-

Street party gives people a taste of Richmond Brittany Spencer Queen St was closed for celebration, not construction, on Saturday, turning into a big street party for The First Taste community event. The event celebrated the reopening of the first section of the Queen St upgrade, with food from around the globe, live music, and cultural performances from the Chinese and Bhutanese communities. Around 1500 people came out to eat, drink, dance, sit, and celebrate in the middle of Queen St between Cambridge Street and McIndoe Place. Among the crowd was nine year old Nick Whitley who was soaking up every second. “This is one of the best thing’s

Queen St has ever had, I love all the dancing and music and how they’ve brought all the food outside.” With the first stage of the $11 million upgrade completed in July and the second just wrapped up, the new ‘pedestrian-friendly' main street has a narrower road, larger footpaths, and more seating. Tasman District Council community partnership officer Lani Evans says that, after the disruption of the upgrade, it was great to see everyone come together and experience the new street. “There was this amazing community spirit, it was happy, it was friendly, it was a great atmosphere, everyone was connecting and people were saying how great it was for Richmond.”

NEWS New simulator for NMIT: Budding maritime officers can now test themselves at a ship’s helm in all weather conditions and in ports throughout New Zealand and worldwide – without leaving the safety of a training room at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). Head of NMIT’s maritime department, Monique Day, says the institute now has the world’s best bridge simulator installed in its marine training department in Nelson. She says the bridge simulator, linked with an existing engine room simulator, is the only system of its type in the country and "gives NMIT a big advantage as a training institute”. Foundation supports local groups: The Rātā Foundation has injected $707,950 in grants into the region and, for the first time ever, is introducing multi-year funding agreements. “The Foundation is all too acutely aware of the need for the not-for-profit sector to have security around funding so that they can get on with their day to day operations and continue to deliver impact,” says Foundation chief executive Louise Edwards. The agreements will cover a three-year

period, and focus on the group’s medium to long-term strategies for the community. Multi-year agreements have been entered into with Age Concern Nelson and Volunteer Nelson. Both organisations had grants of $40,000 per year approved for three years. Port gets another award: Port Nelson is celebrating for the second time this year after winning another national award for its innovative wine logistics service, QuayConnect. Port Nelson’s chief executive Martin Byrne received the top industry accolade on Port Nelson’s behalf at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport award ceremony in Auckland. In June, the port won the coveted Resilience to Climate Change category in the national 2017 Green Ribbon Awards. QuayConnect’s model optimises wine-related import and export loads, with four dedicated truck and trailers working 24-hours a day moving goods from Port Nelson to Marlborough, and bottled wine back to Port Nelson from Marlborough. This compares with the traditional transport model where trucks travel empty or only partly-full on one leg of the journey from ship to producer and back. Over its first year of operation, QuayConnect reduced truck journeys by more than half between Nelson and Marlborough.

Greenacres Golf Club hosted several local ladies for a ‘She Loves Golf ’ day on Sunday, aimed at encouraging more women to give golf a go and maybe even get hooked. The event was organised by Chris Pugh, club capability manager for Tasman Golf Inc., and was attended by approximately 20 ladies. Representatives from five different golf clubs in Nelson and Tasman were also there to help participants pick up some skills and discover the appeal of golf. Llara MacGilloway from Hope was among those taking part and says it was a great opportunity to get out and join a new club, having played the sport before. “It gets you out in the fresh air, you meet lots of people, it’s active, and when you hit that sweet shot it makes the difference, it’s awesome.” Mapua’s Sue Adamson had never played golf before but decided to head along on Sunday as her dad had suggested

Seven bikes made the opening meeting, the track surface made for good racing, the Aidie Drake/ Kieran Satherley pairing proving too good once again, winning for the 3rd year in a row. The 88n of Shaun Solly/Rosie Taylor showed promise over the night, while the three Blenheim teams got valuable track time before their opening meeting. The super stocks are on the endangered species list, with a number of drivers retiring over the off season numbers are critical, but that didn’t mean much when sparks flew in the opening lap. The two visiting drivers made sure the grade would front and that was where things got interesting. Jamie Hamilton set the tone early in heat one, pinging high flyer Brett Nicholls into the turn 4 wall, bending his bumper and retiring him for the race. Hamilton then found the lead to win heat 1. The next heat Nicholls showed his pace, leading from start to finish. Trevor Lineham got a hit from Hamilton, ruining his chances of a podium. This set up the climactic final heat. The stock car grades didn’t muck around getting into action while the super saloon feature produced a dramatic race for the lead that was almost chess-like. A brilliant racing surface that the late Murray Teece would be proud of, the weather played ball with plenty of visiting drivers boosting the numbers. The TQ’s opened the season's racing. The class has its national championship race in Nelson this February so it wasn’t surprising to see some of the title contenders hitting the ground running. The local contingent have had their numbers boosted with several new drivers making their debut. Luke Dilworth, a former stock car driver, looked impressive in his first outing, while Alicia MacLauchlan and Jayden Corkill led the local charge. But it was Canterbury’s Jeremy Webb who took out the feature, Alicia was top local finisher on 3rd while Corkill picked up a heat win. George Crosbie made a return • •

The two jostled until Hamilton was sent back into the wall and over, landing on his roof. While that was going on, Alex Hill in his new car continued to chase the points and win the final heat to claim the trophy. Antz Mackenzie claimed 2nd spot with his new machine. Lineham and Nicholls were both excluded from points in the final heat. The productions were next out, new faces and a few new cars boosted the grade. Tony Diedrichs was the pacesetter on the night, comfortably winning by four points from Eddie Franz and David Allen. The racing was kept pretty clean with few incidents.

Stockcars got into action early on. eventual winner, Keightley Teece, spent the opening lap sideways down the back straight. Brad Neiman was the leader heading into the final race but a flat tyre and hit on the Greymouth tank saw him retire. The other front runner, Dylan Clarke, was the first stock car rollover of the season after getting caught near the wall and put over by the other Greymouth visitor. Levi Collier kept it tidy to claim 2nd while a run-off between Neiman and Craig Tatnell ended the night's racing, Neiman’s experience telling in the end. The street stocks were boosted by the Christchurch quartet. They had a slight speed advantage and

some subtle blocking by team mates saw Cantabrian Dave Mcsherry take the trophy. He had some close moments, getting caught a few times, but local reliability took its toll. Bradley Evans kept out of trouble to claim 2nd overall, a pleasing result. The final grade were the super saloons. They provided the speed for the night and regular visitor Mark Osborne is worth the entry fee alone. His final race performance was the highlight of the night. He won from a determined Trevor Elliott. The Carey boys were looking good, having a battle for 3rd spot in the feature, Shane getting the edge from brother Mark who had won the 2nd heat. A flat tyre to Osborne in the 2nd heat was a blessing in disguise, meaning we would get to see the best out of him to be able to win the feature. Dave Manera had a few anxious moments, scraping the wall and briefly airborne, but was able to finish the night. Next meeting is October 28 with the Coca-Cola fireworks spectacular, plus the sprint cars making their return to the track. It promises to be a cracker of a meeting.

Saxton Velodrome almost signed, sealed and delivered Simon Bloomberg Reporter

It has been a long ride for supporters of the Saxton Velodrome but the project finally passed under the one kilometre to go banner last week when contractors started sealing the 333m track. Although there is still security fencing, some landscaping, track marking and signage to be completed, sealing the track is the last significant stage of the $2million project which started back in June 2015. The velodrome is now on schedule for an official opening in early December and Saxton Velodrome Trust member Rob Ford says everyone involved is delighted the finish line is in sight. “This is the milestone of the project,” Rob says. “It’s been long road – I’ve been here since 2008 and there been plenty of hurdles, but it’s great to see the finished product.
