If you thought your neighbour was bad, spare a thought for the Nelsonians who had to endure the pong reeking from a brew of

fish fertilizer that was plonked on their property line. Or those who woke up at dawn to the sound of a rooster crowing in the central city after their neighbour mistook a male of the species for a female. “There were no fresh eggs but

plenty of noise,” says the council’s environmental inspection manager Brent Edwards. These form just two of a litany of grumbles that stretches to nearly 2000 complaints laid with the Nelson City Council over the past year.

Most have been over excessive noise, with 1302 complaints, along with 486 complaints due to barking dogs. However, there are also “general nuisance” complaints, over hoarders, the “ban 1080” trailer, skateboarders, bonfires and mould in houses. And

fertilizer. “Most people are good,” Brent says. “They do the right thing. But it does make you appreciate the variety of people out there.” He says noise complaints tend to be seasonal and his team is bracing itself for the summer months. Most of those complaints are to do with parties that go long into the night. In that case he will send one of his officers out to see if the party is throwing out “unreasonable noise”. “You ask ‘do I find it excessive? Would I tolerate it? You have to weigh up what would be acceptable at 8pm on Saturday compared to 2am on a Monday.” However, Brent says it is sometimes the lower volumes that lead neighbours to pick up the phone. These include things like droning bass lines or heat pumps. “Even spa pools.” If his officers deem the noise to be

excessive then they issue a warning for the person to alleviate the noise for 72 hours. If they do not comply, or turn the noise back up, then the council officer can return with police and confiscate the offending item. “Technically we could confiscate a spa pool, but we never have.” Brent says the best advice he has so people can hang onto their possessions is to be a good neighbour. “Be considerate, and if you are having a party one of the best things you can do is to talk to neighbours beforehand.” Brent says his team is often stuck in the middle of neighbours and things have turned violent before. But it is all in the service of keeping the peace. And if everything turns south and things are confiscated, then the offending item can be picked up from the council for a sum of $150. “But sometimes people can’t be bothered.”

“Oh my gosh, can you please say that again?” It was part disbelief and part shock that prompted the winner of the Shop Nelson & Win competition to ask to hear the news again. “Sure,” said Nelson Weekly’s managing director Andrew Board. “Jessica Smith of Russell St?” “Yes, that’s me.” “You have won $5000 cash.” The 26-year-old factory worker at Sealord and mother of TJ, 7, and Tia, 4, had just a week earlier shopped at Bodywise on Bridge St, one of 50 retailers taking part in the Shop Nelson & Win promotion. Photo: Jessie Johnston. 220 glass plates a day, although sometimes they got caught up discussing the images they were looking at, including one of Errol’s grandmother in the early 1900s at Collingwood School. “There were some good times, a lot of it was fairly hard going because it’s repetitive in its nature but it was an important thing to do and we got through it,” says Errol. “It feels a little bit sad in that it’s over, but there’s also a sense of completion [at seeing the project through].” The last glass plate negative was one of some hop pickers out in

Motueka. “We had our photograph taken with it and had a big morning tea to celebrate,” says Ian. “We’ve learnt heaps about Nelson, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the project.” The most important and substantial collection amongst the glass plates is called the Tyree Studio Collection and was started by William Tyree in 1878. “This was a time when many other photographic studios were scraping off the emulsion and reusing their glass plates,” says Darryl. “What William Tyree did was he bought other photographic stu-

dios’ catalogues, for commercial purposes, then he had the insight to build a strong room of brick and concrete to protect the glass plates.” In 1886 he took on a young women apprentice, 21-year-old Rose Frank. She learnt the ropes before Tyree went overseas, making her manager. Rose ended up purchasing the business and worked in it for a total of 61 years, maintaining the strong room and protecting the plates. When she died in 1954, she had the glass plates gifted to the Nelson Historical Society. In 1974, the society gifted the plates to the Nelson Provincial Museum, transferring them from the strong room, which is now Hallensteins, to Isel Park Research facility the following year. “A photographic collection so complete, dating from so early on that has survived intact, that’s almost unique in the southern hemisphere. What also places this collection in a unique position is that it started from the 1860s, which is not long after New Zealand became a nation,” says Darryl. Nightingale Library to reopen: The Nightingale Library Memorial will be reopening this Sunday, October 15, with a world record attempt for the most children attending storytime and a free magic show. The library has been closed since July for refurbishments. The event will run from 11am – 1pm with the library returning to its usual opening hours from Monday, 16 October. Jack’s bike reveal: After three months of fundraising, 14-year-old Jack Roberts will be getting his first bike this weekend. Six-year-old Damin Ching can’t ride a bike, kick a ball around or play tag with his friends without getting exhausted. But a $120,000 “life changing” operation in the United States could change all that. Damin has right side hemiplegia, a type of cerebral palsy which causes him to have extremely high muscle tone and lack of control in the affected side of his body. But a rare operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy, which involves cutting the nerve fibres in the spine that the brain uses to stiffen the limbs,

could give the Nayland Primary School pupil a new lease on life. “Biking, swimming, running – he’ll be able to do all of that without help,” says his mother Mikayla McDonald. “He still gets around but it’s just a lot harder for him. He can’t keep up with his peers at school or play soccer and monkey bars because he can’t get that whole coordination.” The operation is not funded in New Zealand and the Stoke family is trying to raise the full amount to send Damin to St Louis Children’s Hospital in July 2018. Mikayla says it wasn’t until Damin was around six months old that she and her partner Brandon Ching noticed that

something “wasn’t quite right.” “He was a normal full-term baby and was doing all the things he was supposed to,” she says. “But we noticed he wasn’t using the right side of his body, so we asked the GP and they said that it was normal, so we carried on.” But when Damin was hospitalized with bronchiolitis at nine months old, a paediatrician picked up on it and diagnosed him with the condition. From then on it has been constant brain scans, physio and hydrotherapy, surgeries and numerous rounds of botox injections to relieve the tightness in his leg. “He’s always sore in his leg. It’s pretty much like going to

the gym and afterwards they feel really tight and sore,” says Brandon. “Some days he walks to school, but he’s too tired to walk home and Mikayla has to piggy back him.” The family have already managed to get a few local businesses behind them, as well as setting up a Givealittle page to raise the $120,000. “Nelson is such a great place and we’ve already had so many offers of help,” says Mikayla. “It’s quite gobsmacking realising what a great community we live in, all banding together just to help us.” To donate, visit givealittle.co.nz or email kayla10188@gmail. com

The international television show ‘Put Some Colour in Your Life’ made a pit stop in Nelson late last month, featuring local realist artist Cindy Hutton in an episode. The Australian art educational TV show travels the globe to find artists in their home studios and record their techniques. It is viewed by millions of people in the United Kingdom, America, Australia, Austria and New Zealand, as well as on their widely followed Youtube and Vimeo channel. Cindy, who was a real estate agent until she got more art commissions than house listings, says featuring on the show is such an exciting opportunity, but it was "weird" to have cameras and a camera crew all crammed into her small Richmond studio. “Painting in front of a film crew was something I’ve never done before so it was a bit daunting, but Sofia and Graeme were amazing to work with and even though I was completely out of my comfort zone they made it really fun. “I'm really looking forward to seeing how they've edited six hours of filming down to half an hour and

what they’ve created, it's going to be weird seeing myself on television.” Host Graeme Stevenson says they were thrilled to be able to film Cindy for the show “Cindy’s work is amazing and I am sure that our viewers will benefit from seeing some of the techniques that Cindy will be sharing,” he says. Cindy says the perfectly timed phone call asking her to feature in ‘Put Some Colour in Your Life’ fell on the first anniversary of her dad’s death. “For me, the whole thing is a gift from God, I’ve been given the gift of talent and now this exposure and getting the call on the anniversary of my dad’s death, it was a real distraction and gave me something to look forward to, this whole process has been quite special,” she says. To top everything off, her episode will be airing on January 17, on her birthday. During the show's fourth trip to New Zealand, host Graeme and head of production Sophia Stacey will be filming five other New Zealand artists, Min Kim, Debbie Lambert, Kym Beaton, Sue Currie and Lynley Van Alphen. They will be aired on New Zealand’s Choice on Demand and Sky Arts NZ.

The playground at Tahunanui has come a long way since the Nelson Lions decided to inject a bit of life into the dunes. Photographs from 1964 show the old concrete train and tortoises that are still at the site. However, a rocket ship slide and rudimentary tunnel are long gone. “Recent attendees at the playground indicate that this is going to be the most popular play area for children in Nelson,” an old edition of the Photo News reads.

That prediction arguably came true. And now the playground is getting another makeover – this time in the form of a new fort, which was built about 20 years ago. An artist’s impression of the $70,000 new addition shows a modern structure complete with slide, monkey bars, bridge and climbing frame. Nelson City Council acting chief executive Alec Louverdis says a recent inspection of the old fort revealed it had become “very rusted”, which raised safety concerns. “As it was approaching the end of its expected useful life

replacement with new equipment was already planned, but has now been done ahead of schedule in light of the presence of significant rust.” The old fort has now been dismantled during the school holidays in a move that Alec says is “far from ideal.” “Council … regrets any inconvenience this has caused.” However, all other equipment is still able to be used. “No further work will be happing on site over the holidays,” Alec says. “Work on installing the replacement equipment will happen later in the month.”

This week we speak to Axel de Maupeou, who is heading up the Nelson Arts Festival team. With a Burger Culture creation in hand, he talks about what Nelsonians can expect from a festival that punches above its weight. The Nelson Arts Festival launches tomorrow. How are you feeling? Exhausted. Excited. The invisible becomes visible, things that the team has been working on for months, if not a year, finally morphs into something. It’s been a secret kept with the team and it’s not onstage but the festival is such a spectacle. It has to be on stage for it to be gauged. All that excitement is delivered when the curtain raises. Why do you think it’s important to have the arts festival and for people to support it? The festival is very strong on the community. The show Maungatapu was created locally, the Granary Gigs are all local. We have music, theatre, dance, the masked parade and carnival. There is huge community in-

ternational, national, dance, music, comedy and theatre. It really is like an international chef putting a menu together - there is a link between everything. It’s not randomly done. There is almost a narrative that underlies putting all the pieces of the puzzle. You want things that are entertaining, things that are daring, but there has to be a balance. It’s opening up the community to new things. We are continuing to explore new ways to push the boundaries in order to reinvent it and develop tomorrow’s audiences. It has a big role in developing skills and helping social isolation. Everyone must get behind it as, very often, it is a remedy to so many social problems. To have a healthy society and community, arts needs to be an integral part of the mix and the festival does just that. What would you say to the regular Nelsonian who hasn’t gone to an arts festival before. Why should they go? We are creatures of habit but I like the SAS motto: Who dares wins. I think it’s critical to try new things especially if you are a

parent. Bring your kids. We tend to share what we like with our children, but that’s limited. Let’s not limit what children might find joy and passion in. There are so many shows on for children. Bring them to something that you might not have been able to when you were growing up. It’s about becoming more aware of what is out in the world. This brings world-class performances to Nelson. It’s unique. Challenge yourself and show your children that you dared. What do you look for to create a well-rounded festival? To have a good mix of local, in-

Waimea Dam dollars: Nelson City Council has been discussing behind closed doors the giving of five million dollars toward the Waimea Dam project. Why aren’t ratepayers being consulted? Where would the $15 million additional funds come from, to bring this water from lower Queen St to Nelson? Or is the five million dollars an attempt by the Nelson mayor to shore up her political patronage with the government, in the hope that the taxpayer will fund the additional expenditure? Dan McGuire Mayor Rachel Reese responds: We have had several briefings from staff from both Nelson City and Tasman District Councils to keep elected members up-to-date with progress on this project, including updates on negotiations between Waimea Irrigation Ltd and Crown Irrigation Ltd. Briefings are held to provide information on complex issues. No decision making is undertaken. This is not a new project for NCC as our council has been involved in scoping discussions for many years and has already contributed expenditure and staff time to investigations into regional water resources. A contribution to the Waimea Dam was highlighted in the Nelson Long Term Plan 2015-25. A proposal was included to allow headroom for debt associated with a possible capital contribution in 2018/19 to align with construction

Now the project has advanced, Nelson will consider whether it consults on a specific dollar contribution, likely to be $5m. We are aware that TDC has included a sum of $5m from NCC in its consultation material as a placeholder. However, it must be understood that Nelson is yet to make a decision on funding and TDC cannot rely on this contribution at this stage. Nelson City Council will not make a decision on a capital contribution until after it undertakes another full public consultation process, including submissions and hearings. Council will consider whether it wants to begin that consultation process when a report comes to council in late October. The mayor and Nelson’s role is fully independent of the Tasman District Council and the Government. Nelson will make its own decision after considering the views and preferences of our community. We have been dealing with big trucks constantly driving up and down all day during the week, noise from heavy machinery, constant dust, mud and annoyance. Hospice given $500k for new facility Charles Anderson Nelson Tasman Hospice has just received a huge boost to its building fund for a new facility in Stoke. Pub Charity has donated $566,366 to the capital fundraising campaign for the new building which is due to be completed in early 2019. “We are absolutely thrilled to have been donated this generous amount from Pub Charity which is a welcome boost to our

fundraising campaign,” Nelson Tasman Hospice Chief Executive Frans Dellebeke says. “It will go a long way to help us achieve our target.” The total estimated cost of the new home for hospice is $11.5 million. The hospice is contributing $7.5 million to the project and that leaves $1.5 million to raise through grants and in-kind donations on the build and $2.5 million from the community. Grants donated so far total over

$800,000 which includes the recent announcement of $250,000 from the Rata Foundation. The hospice cares for over 155 patients at any one time with most being looked after in their own homes. The design for the new hospice includes 10 patient units, consulting rooms, space for families to spend time together, as well as outdoor areas. It will also include storage for the hospice equipment that is used in the community.

“Going into support tonight” were Private Lewis Roy Gordon Haycock’s final written words. The member of the 12th Nelson and Marlborough Company penned them in his diary before heading to the front line. It was October 10, 1917. Two days later, during the Battle of Passchendaele, was New Zealand’s blackest day of World War 1. More than 800 of our own would be dead. Of them, 40 were local boys and men, aged between 21 and 45. Also on that battlefield was that 22-year-old farmer from Hope, known as “Roy”. He was farming on his family property when, ten weeks shy of his 21st birthday, Roy enlisted. Roy’s two diaries have provided his family, and New Zealand, with invaluable insight into everyday life at war. They tell the story of parades, drills, sea voyages and receiving letters

Roy’s great-nephew, Richard Palmer, said that Roy’s diaries read more like “a man having an adventure rather than somebody amid a mad world.” “The trench got blown in by a shell,” Roy wrote. “Two were dead, two badly wounded. His body was never found. “After the war, his mates told his family they reached the wire, a shell landed, and Roy disappeared,” says great-nephew Gerald Haycock. But like most who returned, he says they never talked much about what they went through. “It was so hard on families to send their young men off to war. Losing a loved one is not something you really ever get over,” says Peggy Balck, a greatniece of Roy. A plaque was placed on Roy’s father’s tombstone, when he died in 1926. He is also remembered on the wall at Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium, and on the memorials at Richmond and Brightwater. A number of commemorations are also taking place on Saturday, October 14. The RSA will be holding a service at the Anzac Park Cenotaph from 7am, and the Nelson Historical Society will have a display at Founders Heritage Park between 10am - 3pm.

Just as the dust settles from the two rounds of the Hydraulink War of the Wings series the Sprintcars arrive back in town for the Donaldson Civil South Island Sprintcar Championship. Last season we hosted the New Zealand Sprintcar grand prix and what a show that

Golf encouraging more Tough tennis matches at masters women into the sport Golf clubs around the region are encouraging girls and women to get into golf. She Loves Golf is a national campaign run by New Zealand Golf to get more women in the sport. Nelson regional golf manager Chris Pugh says all of the region's club are hosting an open day this Sunday at the Greenacres golf course in Richmond. "It's just an opportunity to get along either by themselves or

with their family and just give it a go, basically. "We want to get rid of that perception that golf is a sport for boring old men. It's a great sport for active ladies, young girls and older women." No equipment is needed at the day and coaches will be on hand to lend some advice. There will be plenty for kids to do as well. She Loves Golf will be held from 11am to 2pm this Sunday, October 15.

The inaugural singles tennis competition took place at this year’s SI Masters Games in perfect tennis playing conditions. Traditionally, doubles is the format for SI Master Tennis, however the call to add singles to the competition proved worthwhile. Kelvin Williams pulled out all stops against Richard Fry in an exciting three set match in the competitive 35/45+ grade, testing the limits of both players. Fry won the first set in a tiebreak, only to have Williams break back taking control in the second, with a third full set going to another tiebreak; Williams prevailing 6/7, 6/4, 7/6. Williams faced Wellington player, Simon Richardson, in the final, again being pushed to three sets before taking gold 6/0, 4/6, 10/4. Richardson won the silver medal and Fry, bronze. Competitive 55+/65+ saw Kevin Wilson romp home to take gold, conceding

only four games over three matches. Local principal John Armstrong didn’t give away too much en route to taking the 45+ social title, silver going to David Scott and bronze to Steve MacKay. Women’s competitive singles kept spectators occupied with an array of skills on court. Heidi Mayer and Jillian Cavan’s closely fought match produced the best in both players, Mayer got the edge early in the final tiebreak to win 6/4, 4/6, 10/3. Alice Anderson had consistently good games to take the women's competitive gold medal, winning all her matches in straight sets, with Mayer silver and Jill Cavan bronze. Maureen Miles took the gold for 65+ competitive, Jan Linn won gold in the 55+ women’s social, with Sandra Bishop the silver winner. The 65+ social gold went to Noelene Robinson, 45+ social gold to Hannah Straker and silver to Karina Inglis.

Nelson welcomed competitors from all over the country last week when it played host to the 2017 NZ Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Around 400 athletes from 16 provinces descended on Trafalgar Centre for the event which started on Friday and ran through the weekend. “We’ve loved Trafalgar Centre, the venue is perfect for this type of competition and it’s great being in a smaller town because there’s so much support around it, too,” says Gymnastics New Zealand event manager, Rebecca Weber. “Even with the spectator numbers throughout the champi-

onships, it definitely seems as through people came down to support the event, so it’s been a really great atmosphere.” Artistic gymnastics includes a floor routine and vault, while the men’s only events feature the pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars and high bar, with the women competing on the uneven bars and balance beam. The Top of the South (TOP) team included 14 athletes from Gymnastics Nelson and four from Blenheim. “It was pretty successful, we got 21 medals all up, and for a group of only 18, that’s not too bad. I think we placed eighth in the medal haul out of the 16 provinces that were represented,” says TOP women’s artistic coach Karyn Brown. “For Hannah Bloomfield and
