Tāhuna shortcut: ‘A person could be hit next’ KATE RUSSELL Motorists cutting across an empty lot at Tāhunanui’s busiest intersection have sparked safety concerns after a dog was hit and killed by a vehicle late last month. The empty 1704 square metre site on the corner of Bisley Ave and Tāhunanui Drive/SH6 was home to a car yard, but now sits vacant. This means vehicles can now drive down from Bisley Ave, cut through the site as a shortcut, and pull out onto Tāhunanui Drive so they don’t have to wait at the traffic lights. Tāhunanui Business and Citizens Association chair, Jacinda Stevenson, says, in late October a “well-known” member of the community was walking their dog on the footpath when a vehicle cut through the lot and ran over the dog, and narrowly missed the person. “That could have been a child on a scooter or bike.”
