6-storey zones to be scrapped STAFF REPORTER After reviewing around 900 submissions on its controversial plans for housing density, Nelson City Council is recommending several changes to its original
proposal. The signature change would be the scrapping of the high-density zone which would have allowed 6-storey buildings to be built without a resource consent, provided they conformed with the
general rules. The high-density zones would be largely replaced with the medium-density zones, which allow for 3-storey buildings without a consent, or the general residential zone in specific areas like the
Tāhunanui Hills or Atawhai. But while the high-density zone itself is proposed to be abandoned, high-density builds would still be allowed through a specific resource consent process on large sites that are considered to have
a high accessibility to the central city or Stoke. Other key changes identified by the council include changing the daylight controls for medium-
