Charles Anderson When Ben Lafale arrived in Nelson two years ago from his native Samoa there were some big changes. “I miss my family there,” the 13-year-old says. “That’s been hard.” His parents decided that New Zealand was the place to give Ben and his siblings the best chance in life. Since then, Ben has taken up the opportunity with open arms. “He just embodies the school values,” says Nelson Intermediate deputy principal Simon Patel. “He is just one of those kids who is always in the right place at the right time.”

cil’s trial closure of the top of Trafalgar St to cars kicking in this Friday. “We’ll have around an extra 40 seats outside at the Vic, so we’ll have to increase our staffing levels.” Kimberly Widley, owner of Cod and Lobster Brasserie, also on Trafalgar St, says their summer season has started earlier than expected. “Absolutely, everyone is screaming out for staff,” she says. “It’s busy already - we’ve advertised for staff and we’re still looking. Trying to find trained and experience

staff with the appropriate skills and qualifications is tough, especially this close to Christmas.” She says they get quite a few transient staff coming in, but they have to turn many away because of language barriers. The Nelson Tasman region has the lowest unemployment rate nationwide which means businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to hire the right staff. Recent data from the Household Labour Force Survey showed the region has the lowest unemployment in the country with only 2.2 per cent compared

to 4.6 per cent nationwide. Tony Crosbie, Nelson Branch President of Hospitality New Zealand says it is “definitely” an issue for hospitality operators in Nelson. “In general, there is a massive struggle to find workers that are suitable and a lot of operators have expressed that it’s hard.” Owner of Ford’s Restaurant and Bar, Kerry Ford, also says that it has been slower than usual finding staff. “We do have quite a few students who have come back to work for us, but we would have expected more backpackers through by now,” she says.

Hampden Street School gala a knock out Hundreds turned out for Hampden Street School’s annual twilight gala on Friday on the promise of good food, good weather and great fun. Emily Walker, who moved with her family to Nelson last year, says she was blown away with how great the gala was. The gala raised $20,000 and the money will be used to pay for swimming lessons for students in years 3 to 6.

Santa Claus is coming to town With December just days away it’s a busy time of year for Santa Claus, but he’s managed to find plenty of time for our region. On Sunday, Santa visited Richmond for its annual parade and this Sunday he’s due to land in Nelson. The Nelson Santa Parade has undergone a few changes this year, including a new route and direction.

The parade will now start at Trafalgar Park at 12 noon and make its way up Trafalgar St, turn into Hardy St and finish at Morrison Square. Organiser Huup Wagen says there will be around 30 floats in this year’s parade and is urging people to come along and enjoy the festivities. “Hopefully it’s going to be a nice sunny day and people

have a great time in Morrison Square after the parade, at the Christmas Carnival.” Huup says it’s still not too late to enter a float in the parade, with two $500 cash prizes up for grabs for the most creative entry and the float with the most participants. Special celebration for favourite teacher Charles Anderson Editor

It might be 62 years after they were students of Harley Stokes but that did not stop a group of Hampden Street School alumni getting together to celebrate their former teacher’s birthday. Harley, who turned 96 yesterday, seemed a bit bemused as to why the students would want to give him such an honour. "It’s because you were the most wonderful teacher,” said Ruth Bagnall, who tracked Harley down as part of next year’s 150th anniversary of Hampden Street School. Ruth was part of Harley’s 1955, Standard 1 class, which brought together the collection of old friends. "He was the softest teacher in Hampden St School,”

said Nicky Borras. “He was just the loveliest man. He was super.” Harley went into teacher’s college in 1949 before starting at the school and staying for 17 years. "I liked the idea of teaching children,” he said. “I wasn’t cut out for anything else.” Sally Win said, after they figured out when Harley’s birthday was they wanted to put on a small party to say thank you. She said, even though some of the students had gone their separate ways, many had come back to Nelson and ended up living quite close. Simon says that Ben is a “top quality dude” who is always there to help and defuse situations that arise in the school yard. “The students just respect him. And it’s just Ben being Ben,” he says. So when it came time to put in an application to the Kelly McGarry Foundation, which helps recognise deserving people who embody the spirit of the late mountainbiker, Simon knew who the school should

nominate. Last week after school, the foundation, which partnered with Village Cycles, Giant Bikes and Dusty Builders, had a surprise for Ben. The school gathered in the court yard and Simon McIntyre led a countdown while Ben looked away. Then Ben turned back. Standing there was a brand new Giant mountainbike. “It means everything,” Ben says. “They surprised me. I looked back, and the bike was just

shining. It’s so good.” He has already taken it on a ride up the Brook Valley mountainbike tracks. Ben says he is just being himself. “I always look out for other people. It feels good. Being friendly is a good thing to do.” Ben says he is looking forward to starting at Nelson College next year. And the bike will help him even further embody Nelson Intermediate’s school motto: “Whaia te aratika, follow the right path.”

Times have changed at the Nelson A & P Show with women venturing from the traditional baking competitions and equestrian events and muscling into the last bastions of manhood of woodchopping and strongman competitions. The Taylors Cars Strongman Challenge and woodchopping were two of the biggest attractions at the Golden Edge-sponsored show held at Richmond Park on

And one of the things that helped make these events even more interesting than usual was the number of top female athletes lining up alongside the men. “I do it for fun,” defending Strongman champion, Louise Kelly of Nelson, says. “I helped run the event two years ago and when it opened up to women last year I thought it would be fun to have a go at it. “I’m not that big, I’m only 69kg, but it’s technique as well as strength, so I hold my own.” Although Louise couldn’t repeat her championship-winning feats of last year, she did take out the truck pull against her much bigger rivals. World record-breaking weightlifter Kate Mitchell-Parker of Auckland won the women’s event while Conner Moeke of Palmerston North edged out Nelson’s Ben Smith in the men’s competition. Event promoter Luke Slotemaker says the standard of competition had improved massively this year with the athletes lifting and pulling thousands of kilograms in eight events over two days. He says athletes the calibre of Kate would win strongman competitions anywhere in the world, showing that the Nelson

The woodchopping also featured the fairer sex with Nelson’s Ashleigh Radford, 18, sharpening axes alongside Nelson’s world champion Adam Lowe and hardened Richmond veteran Ray Biggs. “I saw it at the A & P Show when I was younger and thought this is cool,” Ashleigh says. “I also wanted to do something that

wasn’t pony club.” And Ray, who has been woodchopping for 26 years, says that’s one of the appeals of the sport. “Anyone can do it. It’s handicapped, so you get 14 and 15-year olds chopping against world champions and someone in their 80s. There’s always great camaraderie too – that’s why I keep doing it.” The show enjoyed magnificent

weather over the weekend with secretary Annette Robinson saying they had bigger crowds than last year. “Saturday was well up on last year and we had a constant stream of people on Sunday, although it was not a big as Saturday because there were so many other events on,” Annette says. “There was a really friendly atmosphere and the weather was perfect – it was a wonderful show.”

NEWS Helicopter grabs mountainbikers: Two men were airlifted in separate accidents at the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park on Saturday. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to the first incident at the park around 10.30am which involved a 50 year old male rider falling from his bike and suffering rib and chest injuries. He was flown to Nelson Hospital. The helicopter was then immediately flew back to the same park for another male rider who had again fallen whilst riding on the track, on this occasion suffering a neck injury. Due to the location of the second rider he was required to be winched out on a specialised stretcher. He was also flown to Nelson Hospital.

About eight years ago Ralph Urwin was skimming through TradeMe when he came across an old Z Class yacht for sale. It was in pretty poor condition, but Ralph liked the idea of owning a small yacht that he learned to sail in as a young lad. So he transported it to Nelson but then it hung up in his garage, gathering dust. “I thought it was about time to clean it up. So I gave it a sand and a paint and

plugged a few holes and she was good to go.” All he needed was a crewmate. So, he called up John Harris, who he had sailed with when they were at the peak of their skills in the 1970s. John thought about it for a couple of weeks before eventually agreeing to the task. “I thought If I’m going to finish sailing soon then I want to start and end it in the same class.” The pair had competed in trials for the 1976 Olympics but never quite made it. “We didn’t put in the time,

effort or money to get there, but we still loved it,” Ralph says. But their task this time around was slightly less auspicious – Tuesday night races at the Nelson Yacht Club. The pair got out on the water for the first time last week. “It was a lot of fun,” John says. “A lot of laughs. Russell Coutts wouldn’t have anything on us.” John says there are a lot of older sailors around Nelson who may not have gotten out on the water for a while. “We can show it can be done. There might be others who

A Nelson breast cancer survivor is opening up her grand old home and garden this weekend, as a way to say "thank you" to those who helped her in her recovery. Anne Tucker and her husband have spent the last five years restoring 'Turama' - their 1922 Californian bungalow, which sits high above Tahunanui on Richardson St. Now she is inviting people to come take a look and enjoy a Devonshire tea or sundowner wine session, with all the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Foundation. Anne was diagnosed with breast cancer in January this year. "Our builder said he'd been building all his life to build this house, and we found some amazing things. "The doors had about seven layers of paint on them." Also complete with an orangery, greenhouse, cottage garden, David Austin rose garden, Japanese garden, berry and vegetable gardens and fruit trees – every inch of the outdoor space has been utilized. Anne says she has sold about half of the tickets so far. "There is the potential to sell 150 tickets, which would raise about $4500 – so hopefully we can sell them all." The sessions will take place at 1A Richardson St, this Friday 1 December and Saturday 2 December. There are three sessions each day – morning tea from 9:30am – 11:30am, afternoon tea from 2:30pm to 4:30pm (both $25 per person) and sundowner wine and nibbles from 6:30pm – 8:30pm ($40 per person). 25 people per session. Now in its fourth year, the festival is going from strength to strength, says artistic director Laura Irish. “Nelson Fringe is truly a special festival experience as an artist and an audience goer. Nelsonians provide such a welcoming environment for artists to showcase new, ground-breaking work.” It has been a platform for local, national and international artists to showcase their work and talents, and showcased performers from as far away as Canada and Australia. The festival runs from April 28 to May 6 next year and the cut-off date for submissions is January 1.

Classic cars raise money for Hospice Jessie Johnston For the third year in a row, local V8 enthusiasts have combined their passion for cars with an act of generosity, the result being the V8 Escape. On Saturday morning, participants left Brightwater Motor Inn for a run that took them through the Moutere and out to Tapawera, then to Quinney’s Bush before concluding the drive back where they started. “Me and fellow organiser Ian Barker, we’ve just got a passion for American classic cars and we got talking one day and thought, we should organise a run with the proceeds going to a worthy cause,” says Ross Hurley. “We’ve run the event for three years in a row now. We know there’s an awful lot of classic cars in the Nelson area, so it’s also a good excuse for people to get them out.” The V8 Escape was successful in raising $1150 for the Nelson Tasman Hospice and received “an awful lot of positive feedback from people, thanking us for an awesome day out,” says Ross. Staff at Quinney’s Bush were in charge of awarding the People’s Choice award, which went to Anita Parkins and her 1957 Cadillac de Ville. “I’ve only had this about six weeks, so this is its first outing,” says Anita. The run concluded with music from the Dixie Prix and the raffle draw which included many great prizes, generously donated by a number of local businesses.

Act III of Sleeping Beauty will be the debut performance for the Rebecca Bignall Boutique Dance Company, which started up last year. Current student Georgia Norriss, who placed third at last year’s South Island Ballet Awards junior division, will play Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. “The show is an opportunity for the juniors to get into the role of fairytale characters and aspire to be like the senior girls who will dance en Pointe for the duration of the performance,” says Rebecca.

“We enjoy the reward of watching young talent progress. It's pretty special to see these young women go on to achieve in the professional world.” There will be two performances of Sleeping Beauty, on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December, 7pm, at the Suter Theatre. Each show will be followed by a variety showcase of jazz, contemporary and classical. Tickets are $25 or $18 for children and are available from TicketDirect or the Theatre Royal.

Hospitality is a fast-paced, vibrant industry and is also one of Nelson and Tasman’s major sectors. A career in hospitality can also take you around the world, however, it requires a number of skills whether you’re in the kitchen or working front-of-house. For the last 30 years, Nelson Training Centre has been providing quality hospitality training to young people, offering free courses to those who meet the entry requirements. Located in the heart of Nelson and supported by a team of qualified tutors and staff, Nelson Training Centre has all the facilities needed to train hospitality students to industry standards and offer them a pathway to employment opportunities. Nelson Training Centre welcomes peer to peer teaching and support, which sees the more experienced students often lend a helping hand to those new to the group. “The sole focus at Nelson Training Centre is employment, even though we offer qualifications the most important thing is to help students become employable, which is achieved by practice and repetition, and is what makes the campus café such a valuable tool,” says Dave. The Back Alley Café gives students experience working in a real-world hospitality environment where they spend time and develop skills both in the kitchen and front-of-house. The café is open to the public every Thursday, while its Friday luncheons for invited guests give the students a chance to improve their customer service and public interactions during restaurant style service. This weekly event is also a great way to support the community with Nelson Training Centre students serving many voluntary groups and organisations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Salvation Army, Stoke Senior Citizens and Youth Service. A glimpse into history

DramaLab is offering you a peek inside Asbestos Cottage where Annie Chaffey lived a life apart. Solitude is based on a true story that reveals how Annie and her lover grew old in the remote mountains of Kahurangi National Park. Martine Baanvinger plays Annie Chaffey and created this performance in collaboration with Mark Manson who composed the music and soundscape. “It’s an old story from a new perspective,” says Martine. The last time I saw Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the Waimea College production in 1978. A solid, well-performed traditional production. However, the Nelson Youth Theatre version I saw last night was a different show altogether with an eclectic variety of songs and dance numbers ranging from rock ‘n roll to country and western, French ballad, calypso and jazz. The Nelson Sports Awards celebrated its 50th edition on Saturday night and it marked the milestone by presenting more than 20 past winners with a commemorative pin. But the night belonged to just one past winner. Rower Zoe McBride, 22, won the Nelson Sportsperson of the Year award in 2015 and did so again this year after a completing a world championship double in the light-weight single sculls. The Nelson Rowing Club member says picking up the award was a huge thrill. “It's very exciting, I'm very honoured." Earlier this year Zoe became only the second woman to win both the premier lightweight and premier open titles at the New Zealand Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha. The only other woman to do it was Philippa Baker-Hogan in 1987-88. At this year’s World Rowing

She says it's been a good transition into the double sculls. “The light-weight double is the Olympic boat class so it's the boat class I want to be in leading into Toyko [Olympics]. The single was awesome but it's great to have that teamwork leading into the Olympics." Sportsman of the Year was won by Shannon McIlroy after he became the best lawn bowler in the

world last December by winning gold in the singles competition at the World Bowls Championships in Christchurch. It capped off a stellar 2016 for the Stoke Bowling Club member, also winning a bronze in the pairs at the world champs and his first national singles title in January of that year. This year he was voted MVP of the Bowls Premier League and beat one of the world's best ever players, Alex Marshall of Scotland, in the Multi-Nations in June. The 30 year-old says it's been an

amazing few years. “I've won this [sportsman of the year] before but this is the first time I've come here with the big carrot, which was winning the world championship. For us it's our Olympics, it doesn't get much bigger than that and it only comes around once every four years." Earlier, a big crowd at the Rutherford Hotel watched as Nelson sporting legends took to the stage to collect their commemorative pins. Sport Tasman chief executive Nigel Muir says it was great to be able to honour those ath-

letes. "It was an amazing collection of sporting legends and I think when you consider what this community produces it really does make you proud to live here." He says the calibre of nominees was outstanding. "I'm very pleased I'm not a judge. I was looking through the nominees thinking 'how do you pick a winner here' because they're all such extraordinary achievements." Other winners were Tasman Makos (team of the year), Greg Lautenslager (coach of the year), Wayne Leighton (masters sportsperson of the year) Lotima Faingaanuku (junior sportsman of the year), Shaane Fulton (junior sportswoman of the year), Under 19 rowers Gabby Hannen and Kayla Baker (junior team of the year). Six people were also recognised for their lifetime contribution to their sport, they were Anna Bartlett (inline speed skating), Manly Bowater (croquet and golf croquet), Jannine Pope (motorsport), Jock Sutherland (cricket), Brett Thornalley (rugby) and Brian Wislang (croquet).

In preparation for her first major race-walking competition, Nelson athlete Paige Cregeen received a helping hand from New Zealand’s number two race walker Rozie Robinson, in a one-on-one coaching session last week. The sixteen-year-old Nayland College student started out in the sport four years ago after her mother, who is a keen power walker, pointed out a race walker to her. “So, I tried to do it and it just came naturally and I just started

doing more races,” says Paige. “I feel that when I’m walking, everything is just gone off my mind and it’s just me and race walking.” Having raced locally on the track and around the streets, Paige is looking forward to tackling her first major competition, the New Zealand Secondary School Track, Field and Road Race Championships, which will be held in Hastings in early December. It also happens to be the biggest track and field event in New Zealand. It was at a coaching seminar in Timaru a few weeks ago that

coach Peter Hague got talking to Rozie about his student and her upcoming competition. “I’ve known Rozie for quite a while and she offered to come up and do a one-on-one with Paige, so I said, yes, why not,” says Peter. Rozie says she is passionate about the younger generation, helping children and teenagers get into the discipline, enjoy it and want to carry on. “I started walking when I was at Marlborough Girls, so knowing that there was another Tasman walker here, it seemed like the right thing to do, to come back to Tasman and help where I

CRICKET: Even the return of new All Black Mitchell Drummond couldn't halt the biggest upset in this year's senior club cricket competition. Drummond, fresh back from Europe where he made his All Black debut, played for his Stoke/Nayland club on Saturday and would have been smiling at the innings break as his side rolled Nelson College for just 76 runs. Mikayla on the fast track to Australia Simon Bloomberg Stoke School athlete Mikayla Whiti will be making her international debut at the young age of 11 when she lines up at the Pacific Schools Games in Adelaide, starting this weekend. Mikayla was named in the New Zealand track and field team for the games earlier this year after winning the 100m and 200m sprint double at both the North and South Island Colgate Games. Although Mikayla recorded a 13.94sec personal best for the 100m at the North Island Colgate Games in January this year, her coach Dennis Kale says it’s difficult know how she’ll perform in Adelaide. “She’s prepared well for it but it’s

early in the season so it’s hard to tell how she’ll go.” Dennis, who has been coaching Mikayla for two years, says the Athletics Richmond runner always had plenty of natural speed and they have been focusing on improving her technique. “There are lots of runners out there with natural speed but they also need a good technique to run really fast. We’ve spent the last 18 months working on Mikayla’s technique because, if they can learn it at a young age, it’s so much easier.” Mikayla is the only athlete from Tasman to be selected for the team and she completed her preparation by winning the 100m and 200m in her age group at the Tasman Children’s Centre inter-club meeting at Saxton Field on Sunday.

Panthers come to town to take on our Tigers Jody Scott The Claws are out this weekend at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway as the Palmerston North Panthers prowl into town to take on the Nelson Tigers for the Super Stock Challenge Cup. It will be the first hit out for both teams looking at rebounding after last season’s early exit at the Palmy Teams Champs. The Tigers have struggled to fill the team over the past seasons, due to retirements, costs and a lack of numbers. But an S.O.S. from Nelson went out and two of the sport's most formidable drivers, Peter and Ethan Rees, responded. The father and son duo have been representing Gisborne Giants over the past few years after a falling out with the Panthers. Peter is a five time NZ stock car champion and won the Super Stock title in 2015. Ethan has learnt from the best and their “Spank” cars are two of the quickest in the country.

The local contingent includes Alex Bright, who almost pulled off winning the Canterbury Champs last weekend, Trevor Lineham and Anthony McKenzie. The Panthers will be an unknown quantity this season, a few internal rumbles over recent seasons, driver retirements and defections have thwarted the most successful team of all time. They were bundled out of the Palmy heats last year in front

of their home crowd so have a point to prove this season and it all starts here in Nelson. The match up will possibly be the only time we get to see the Tigers race on home ground this year, so come and support the Tigers. Other fields at this Saturday's Milestone Home Top of the South Speedway include the Sprint Cars, Super Saloons, TQs and Street Stocks. Gates open at 6pm with racing due to start at 7pm.
