Businesses in Murchison and St Arnaud are booming, with traffic driving through the two small towns increasing by more than 2700 vehicles a day after slips caused by last week’s massive 7.8

earthquake closed State Highway 1 near Kaikoura. New Zealand Transport Agency figures show that 2700 vehicles, including 550 trucks, were travelling on SH1 between Christchurch and Picton every day. Those vehicles are now using the short-

est alternative route though Murchison and St Arnaud, almost tripling the traffic volumes through those towns from 1500 to 4200 vehicles a day. If anything, NZTA spokesman Andy Knackstedt, says that figure is an underestimate because

there will be “a larger number of trucks than the pre-quake counts as the rail freight traffic, which used to be carried along SH1, is transferred onto trucks.” Andy says the traffic numbers will also be boosted by the earthquake response and recovery traffic using

Sales of fuel have also increased by around sixtimes and, for the first time, trucks are stopping to refuel at the store. “It’s only been a week but we’ve had about three times the number of people through the store,” Elaine says. “We are selling lots of pies

and sandwiches and coffee but the people aren’t sitting down and eating - they are on the go. “We’ve had to employ four more staff to keep up and we’re open longer. After 7.30pm it’s mainly trucks stopping for fuel - last night we were open to 10.” The Murchison information centre is also experiencing the explosion in traffic volumes. Robert King-Tenison told the Greymouth Star the volume of trucks was “really noticeable when you have one road through a small town - it’s constant.” They were also seeing a lot of tourists who had intended travelling the Kaikoura route. The information centre is pushing them on to the

West Coast, from Karamea right down to the glaciers. Robert says if SH1 is not reopened for the peak of the tourist season in January and February, it is “going to be completely whacky”. Andy says NZTA is “fully aware of the impact this will have on the communities located along this route and the issues for road users.” “We will be investing additional time and resources to maintain the road to the level required to safely cope with a significant increase in traffic and ensure people’s safety. We will also work together with communities to listen to their concerns and manage the impact on local residents and businesses.”

National strongman competition held at Nelson A&P Show FROM PAGE 1 Alex says the competition is a spectacle and the weights are easily relatable. “If you put weights on a bar it’s not as easy for people to understand just how tough that is, but if you pull a tractor then they can get an idea of what it’s like.” Alex says the event is a starting point for people and a chance for individuals to push themselves. “We get people from all walks of life and this is the only novice competition in the country.” Alex finished sixth in the men’s field. Nelson’s Louise Kelly, more known for her judo expertise, won the New Zealand’s Strongest Woman title while Christchurch’s Deynemn Kara won the men’s crown. Event organiser Luke Slotemaker says the event will continue to grow and is gaining a following nationally as an event that is well worth coming down to compete in.

The counter “If it’s ok for Hone, it’s ok for me” protest started at the church steps on Sunday afternoon, with two dozen people who oppose Stanton’s ongoing stand against Nelson City Council. They walked to where Stanton camps, and say they were intending to cross the road when three men who support Stanton started throwing water balloons at them from the top of a building across the street. Arguing then started between supporters and opposers to Stanton’s cause before Stanton punched protest co-organiser Ru Dawson. Other fights broke out before police turned up. Mum and daughter caught in Kaikoura quake Simon Bloomberg

Nelson mum Juanita Ingham admits she is usually a “bit of a wuss” when it comes to earthquakes, but she knew she had to be brave when the destructive 7.8 quake hit Kaikoura at two minutes past midnight on Monday November 14. Juanita and her daughter Lucy were staying in Kaikoura on their way back from Dunedin where Lucy is studying law, when the massive quake hit the town. Although the motel they were staying in was not badly damaged, the quake threw them out of their bed and onto the floor where they held each other tight and prayed for the violent shaking to stop. “It was so frightening because it just kept going,” Juanita says. “We couldn’t stand up, we just lay on the floor holding each other “I’m normally a bit of a wuss when it comes to these sorts of things at home and [husband] Craig is the calm one. But Craig wasn’t there and we were on our own, so I knew I had keep it together and reassure Lucy.” When the shaking finally subsided, Juanita says her first thoughts were for the people of Christchurch after the city had been dev-

astated by two big quakes. “We didn’t know where it was centred, so I said to Lucy ‘I hope that wasn’t in Christchurch’. It was such a big quake I knew, that if it had in been Christchurch, it would be ground zero there.” The next thing they did was to try and call Craig and the rest of their family in Nelson to say they were safe, but they couldn’t get through because the phones were out. It wasn’t until the next morning when they found a wi-fi hot spot outside the hospital that Lucy was able to send a Facebook message to her brother Tom saying they were safe and well. “We knew we were alright but Dad didn’t know, so it was harder on him,” Lucy says. “He didn’t actually realise the earthquake had hit Kaikoura until one of his friends called him at two in the morning and asked if we were alright. “It was really stressful for him and the rest of the family not knowing. They were beside themselves.” The following morning Juanita and Lucy tried to leave Kaikoura but, after driving around two road cones and an insignificant sign saying road closed, they soon realised that they weren’t going anywhere.

“We got to a part of the road where it had sheared and dropped a couple of feet, so we turned around. When we got back we had a bit of a look around and saw the damage to all the shops. “The town was empty but there were hundreds of people all camped up on the hill out of the

tsunami zone. There were tents and cars everywhere - it was chaos.” Later on Monday, Lucy and Juanita finally managed to get some cellphone coverage behind the police station and called Craig who said he would arrange a helicopter flight out of Kaikoura.

However, the initial attempt to get airlifted out was aborted after Juanita and Lucy lost cellphone reception and missed their rendezvous with the helicopter. “We missed the flight and then someone told us the road wouldn’t be open for at least two weeks and we’d be stuck here, and we burst into tears,” Juanita says. “But then a friend of ours in Nelson, Karen Lane, had been talking to her friend in Kaikoura and she found us and said we had a flight out at 6.30 in the morning. “We were so relieved to get out but at the same time we felt really guilty leaving everyone. We felt really sorry for everyone in Kaikoura - it’s such a tragedy for the town.” Juanita says the helicopter flight along the east coast was a real eye-opener, revealing for the first time the extent of the damage. “All those pictures you see on the television and in the paper don’t do it any justice. The scale of the slips and the damage is so big - it’s frightening.” Lucy says they had an emotional reunion when they landed in Nelson and all their family were there to greet them. She says her grandmother “was a wreck” and her father looked like he had aged a couple of years.

Iconic glass and metal artist Nikki Johnson and coffee and carrot cake extraordinaire Patrick Smith have shut up shop and are reclaiming their weekends, leaving a note explaining their absence to devoted regulars. “After 28 years of the studio and 8 years of the Crusty Crab, we’re sorry to say that we are closed for now. “After numerous complaints from the locals, about too much traffic and people and being popular - we can’t downsize! New Zealand First stands behind the Councils who at the Local Government Conference decided to seek changes to the Freedom Camping Act so that they can better manage any issues with freedom campers. Local councils struggle to enforce infringement notices and by-laws so one of the changes we support is the ability to fine Freedom Campers instantly for any infringement. Freedom Camping as a form of seeing the country is growing, partly due, I suspect, to the increased number of tourists visiting our great nation. Which for New Zealand First has also posed a problem - the Department of Conservation in its wisdom charges privately owned campervans more than those from rental companies. New Zealand First feels that this is unfair for New Zealanders because Kiwis by and large travel around the country in their own vehicles. While New Zealand First doesn’t want to “kill the goose that lays the golden egg”, it is an issue that needs a strict enforcement policy as well as thorough and comprehensive ways to administer it. Tourism brings in massive revenue, but the Government has allocated a paltry total of $12 million funding over four years to local council for their infrastructure. Tourists have generated $1.1 billion in revenue in GST alone last year and yet regional New Zealand missed out. We need more of the government’s tourism revenue being diverted to communities to pay for infrastructure that support tourism. RICHARD PROSSER

Matt Watson of Quality Bakers Nelson receives a $10,000 research grant, which he plans to use to visit AB Mauri in the Netherlands to learn more about enzymes. The competition requires entrants to demonstrate their ability in three areas: practical baking, theoretical knowledge of baking technology, and presentation of research.

Snow returns to Rainbow: The recent stormy weather surprised many, bringing snow back to the Rainbow Ski Area last week. Snow began falling on Wednesday afternoon, settling in and snowing harder just before dark and lasting until just after 10am on Thursday. “It’s a bit of a shock really, we weren’t expecting any more snow,” says workshop foreman Mark `Buzz' Busbridge. “There were a good couple of centimetres down to the treeline and it was still snowing this morning. Big year for A&P Show Brittany Spencer Nelson’s A&P Show is just getting bigger. Last weekend’s show drew families, locals and tourists to the Richmond Show Ground for two days of competitions, fun, entertainment, and a fair bit of wind. A&P Association manager Annette Robinson says, despite the predicted weather hiccup, the show went off this year. “I’ve had people telling me they thought it was a fantastic show with everything that was here, there was so much to do

and see, and I know the RDA couldn’t get over how many people were lining up for horse and pony rides.” Annette says the show keeps growing year on year and isn’t showing any signs of slowing, with well over 12,000 people estimated to have flooded through the gates. “We won’t know how many people came through for another day but we’re expecting it to be well above last year’s numbers, both Saturday and Sunday were really busy so it should be a lot more.” Crowds drew towards the

'I'm angry and lonely' Locally Owned and Operated

A brain injury from car crash and people make fun of him for it Andrew Board John Wakelin is frustrated, angry and, most of all, lonely. His life was full of fun and mischief when he was a 20-yearold forklift driver. He loved his ute, loved to drink beer with his mates and was looking forward to a long happy life. On the night that changed it all, John was doing a good deed. He’d just finished playing indoor cricket and had dropped a friend off in Wakefield before driving back to his home in Richmond. On his way through Three Brothers Corner a drunk driver smashed into his car, breaking the leg of a passenger, breaking the leg of the drunk and leaving John in hospital unconscious for a month and fighting for his life. Reflecting on that night and the 33 years that have followed it, John wishes he hadn't come out of that coma. “If it happened again I’d sooner die than going through all of this again.” John suffered a brain injury from the crash that has left him unable to work. He feels isolated, with little contact with family and friends, and what makes it worse is the people who make fun of him. “There’s heaps of prejudice, peo-

Go through a windscreen and see how you get on.” John admits that he doesn’t have much of a filter when it comes to saying what’s on his mind, so he does react when people say cruel things to him. He knows it doesn’t help, but he can’t do anything about it.

“I just wish everyone would leave me alone, just not even talk to me, I don’t want to talk to them.” A prime example was last Guy Fawkes night when some local kids put fireworks in his letterbox. When they went off, John came running from his house yelling at them. One of the kids then threw a rock which whizzed past John’s head and smashed a

window. Brain Injury coordinator Fiona Price says John’s situation is tough. “That’s one of the reasons why John was keen to tell his story because that’s something that happens a lot. People in society make judgements. “Especially young people calling names to him, they think he’s stupid because he walks a bit funny,

not realising that actually he’s been through a major trauma.” John says boredom is one of the hardest things to deal with and he spends his days at the Elma Turner Library, cycling around Nelson and visiting Fiona and Clare Van Eeden from Brain Injury Support. “I’m lonely, and that helps fuel the anger and that anger keeps people away. It’s a catch-22, you can’t win.” Fiona says brain injury is really common in New Zealand with about 90 people suffering a brain injury every day. “But it’s not talked about all that much, because a lot of it is hidden. A lot of people who come in here, you’d never know they had a brain injury, they look fit and healthy, but then you start talking to them and realise that, yeah, things aren’t going so well.” This week is Brain Injury Awareness Week in Nelson and along with trying to raise awareness of it, Fiona and Clare are also running street collections, with the money raised used to fund support group meetings, of which four are held every fortnight. Collectors will be at Richmond Mall on Thursday, November 24, and on Trafalgar St on Saturday, November 26.

Seminar to help landlords learn about meth-contamination A seminar for landlords about how to deal with rental properties contaminated by methampletamine is being held in Monaco next week. Martin Wilkie of First National Real Estate has organised a seminar to be held on Tuesday, November 29, after hearing multiple stories about the issue. “I’ve just had so many people not understanding what’s happening with meth. Obviously it’s a big issue at the moment and I thought, rather than having people just hearing stories in the newspaper, why not actually have an informative evening for them to see what the implications are if they’ve got meth in their property, how they go about finding out if their property is contaminated and what do they do if it is,” says Martin. Earlier this year, the Nelson Weekly reported on a Richmond rental property that received around $50,000 worth of remedial work after being severely contaminated. The seminar will include talks from experts, including insurance, property management and legal representatives. Cool cars cruising for a good cause Simon Bloomberg The owners of Detroit iron will have a good excuse to take their precious gas-guzzlers out for a drive around the Tasman district this Saturday when they rev up their engines for the annual Escapade Mystery Cruise fundraiser. The Escapade was held for the first time last year and proved so popular that organisers Ross Hurley and Ian Barker decided to stage it again this year. All V8, muscle car, hot rod and classic car owners are encouraged to join the Escape, which this year will be a fundraiser for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. "We were only expecting 20 or 30 cars last year because it was the first time, but we got 56 so we were really happy," Ross says. "We are supporting such a good cause this year so we are hoping to get even more cars along." Ross says drivers can join the Escapade by making a donation of $10. Passengers are also encouraged to make a $10 donation to support the hospice and also be eligible to win some of the great prizes that will be on offer when the cruise returns to Brightwater. The Gateway Programme sets future school leavers up for success in the work-force by providing them with valuable hands-on knowledge through local businesses in a range of industries. The school organises Year 12 and 13 students to be placed alongside a business or industry of their choice for one day a week. This lets them gain a basic understanding of what employment is actually like and helps them cement their decision to carry on with a career in their chosen industry. “It’s getting them into the real world and it’s allowing them to develop relationships with employers over a long period of time, and that’s really great for students and the employer. The usual pattern sees the employer offer the student part time work such as after school, or holidays, and then it will grow from that. We’ve been very fortunate this year in that we’ve had a few that have left and gone into apprenticeships,” says Nayland College’s Career Advisor, Margaret McCorkindale. The scope of the placements

The students are able to prove they are capable, instead of one interview determining their employment. A number of local businesses have already been involved in Nayland College’s Gateway Programme over the year’s and many have come away impressed with the experience and the attitude of the students they’ve taken under their wing. Jeffrey Coulson from Active Electrical says they had always done work for Nayland College so, when the school approached him about mentoring student Levi Flynn, he decided to go ahead after seeing Levi’s interest in the electrical industry. “You find out the character of the person, their demeanour, their ethics, rather than taking a punt,” says Jeffrey. “It gives you an insight into the person’s character, whereas coming off the street or wherever they come from, you’re a bit blind to what they’re really

Motoring ‘treasure trove’ goes up for auction Kate Russell If you’re a Nelson vintage car enthusiast, then it’s likely you’ve heard of Dennis King and his huge collection of cars, car parts and memorabilia. This weekend, eight years after his passing, all Dennis’ sought-after items are going up for auction - a final “farewell” to the founder of the Nelson Vintage Car Club. The stars of the two day auction at the King's Quebec Rd residence will be Dennis’ three “all original” cars – a 1913 Ford T Racer, a 1915 Ford T and a 1930 Model A Ford. He purchased the 1915 Ford T in 1956 for ten pounds in Teal Valley, and once drove it from Nelson to Dunedin in one day – a 17 hour journey, stopping only for meals and to light the headlights. Auctioneer John Walker says he has never seen anything like it in his 29 years of auctioneering. “A sale of this nature will only come up every decade or so,” he says. “It’s a treasure trove for anyone in the motoring industry - you name it, it’s here.” Also up for auction will be eight sheds worth of car parts - including motors, cogs, pistons, manifolds, radiators, steering wheels, tyres, hubcaps and petrol

tanks. A rare Plume petrol sign, an original Model T oil can, and veranda posts from the old AA building in Nelson are also up for grabs. There is also a room full of motoring history items such as a large collection of books, AA badges, motoring badges, old car lights, photos, and signs, as well as household chattels. John says there has been “huge interest” in the auction, and he has had many people ringing him with humorous stories about Dennis. “He was heavily involved in the AA and renowned throughout the motor industry – everyone seemed to know him,” he says. “It will be a happy occasion, full of memories - there are some great treasures here.” The auction will be held at 166 Quebec Rd, this Saturday, 26 November, 11am (viewing from 9am) and Sunday, 27 November, 11am (viewing from 9am). There will also be a viewing this Friday, 25 November, 10am – 4pm, or by appointment. There will also be an onsite BBQ, including hot and cold drinks, with proceeds going to charity. Auction raises $3k for Alzheimer’s AMI Nelson staff volunteered and organised a silent auction to raise $3000 for Alzheimer’s Nelson. The cause was chosen to lift the profile of an organisation that provides care and support to people living with dementia and memory loss in the Nelson/Tasman region, says AMI Nelson manager Vicki Beauchamp. “Dementia can be a hidden struggle for those who are impacted, and the team wanted to raise awareness in the community where understanding and life skills can be provided for all people who meet this challenge in their lives.” The office was transformed for the occasion with purple streamers wrapped around pillars and vases of forget- me-not flowers fresh from the garden, the flower used symbolically by Alzheimers Societies, adorning the entrance table. Prizes were generously donated by businesses in Nelson, and included a Morrison lawnmower, a Webber BBQ, art work, gift vouchers and much more.

Kindergarten comes to hospital Kate Russell A free kindergarten service is coming to Nelson Hospital, allowing preschool children to continue with early childhood education during their hospital stay. 'Whare Manaaki' opens next Monday, and will be a "safe space" in the hospital’s paediatric ward where children can "take a break" from being patients, and have some fun. The initiative is a joint effort between the Ministry of Health and the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association, and has been 18 months in the making. "The hospital has provided the room, which has been licensed by the Ministry of Education, and we provide the staff and resources," says Craig Vercoe, senior education advisor for the Kindergarten Association. "There are already similar initiatives happening in other parts of the country, but we’re doing it a bit differently to the others," he says. "But indications from around New Zealand show it’s a really useful tool." Sue Fahey, who comes from Auckland Point Kindergarten,

The job is the perfect fit for Sue, who worked as a registered nurse in paediatrics before she became an early childhood teacher. In Whare Manaaki, children will

be able to do what they normally do at kindergarten – blocks, art and craft, play dough, music and reading stories. But there will also be a focus on helping children to make sense of their hospital stay. "There will be some role playing around traumatic things that

children may be going through," says Sue. “Things like heading into theatre can be scary, so we will be helping the children to express their feelings through drawing and building." For children who are staying in hospital long-term, the service

will give them the ability to keep engaged in learning, and stay connected to their regular ECE service. The service will be available 8:30am – 3pm Monday to Friday, and it will also be taken to the wards for those children who are bed-ridden. Craig says that he hopes Whare Manaaki will help parents feel at ease too, by providing a place where their children can be happy and take a break from their hospital routines. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board service manager for women, child and youth, Jane Kinsey, says the service is a "fantastic collaboration" that will complement the Health School programme that is already being offered to older children at the hospital. "We are really excited, and we are looking forward to seeing what having a teacher present will bring to the ward for preschoolers," she says.

The who’s who of the region’s filmmakers and rising stars walked the red carpet at The Top of the South Film Festival on Friday night. Screened at the newly-renovated Suter Art Gallery and Theatre, the night showed 11 short films and a music video to a sold-out crowd. Organiser Tim Hawthorne says it was a great night for local film. “It was like a Hollywood evening - lots of energy and the crowd was buzzing about the quality of the films. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it looks like we’ll need to expand the festival to two nights next year.” Amongst the films up for judging was Late Equalizer, a 19 minute drama by local Gwen Daley. Gwen, a first time filmmaker from The Wood, has been involved in theatre since she the 80’s, but has never produced a film. Late Equalizer is about a former professional kiwi football-

Nelson Giants on SporTS hunt for new coach

Nelson won the women's clash 17-14, the Under-19 men's match 9-0 and the Under-13 boys game 13-10 at Saxton Fields. Jacob Page The Mike Pero Nelson Giants are on the hunt for a new coach next season after Tim Fanning accepted an assistant coach role at Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel. Tim leaves for one of Europe's biggest clubs with the blessing of the Giants, with former player Phill Jones saying it is an opportunity too good to pass up. "He called me from an airport and told me what was going on, and it's such a good opportunity and speaks to how good Tim is as a coach," Phill says. Tim had one more year to run on his contract but the Giants now have five months to fill the role. Both Phill and Tim say all players have been informed of what was happening and they have all agreed to stay onboard. Phill, who retired last season, was non-committal when asked if he was a front

John McIntyre has swapped V8 power for pedal power as he gets set to launch the Abel Tasman Cycle Challenge next weekend. The New Zealand V8 Championship regular and former Bathurst 1000 competitor believes his days racing behind the wheel have set him up well for the challenges he faces in organising a cycling event. “It takes a lot to run any motorsport campaign,” John says. “You have to look after people like sponsors, your race crew and have the media and fan interaction, and on top of that you have to perform on the track.

The 158km ride is split into four stages. Stage one a 35km effort between Saxton Field and Upper Moutere. Stage two a 40km ride from Upper Moutere to the Motueka River. Stage three is 33km between Motueka and Riwaka, taking in Kaiteriteri Beach, and the last stage in 50km between Riwaka and Saxton Fields. The racing starts at 6.30am on Saturday, December 3.

Stockcars do plenty of stirring at speedway Jody Scott Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway’s planned feature was affected by the recent Kaikoura earthquake, but the Stock Car Stirrer certainly made up for it on Saturday night. The Palmerston North Panthers Super Stock team were due to race the Nelson Tigers for the Challenge Cup, but due to ferry sailings being disrupted there was no guarantee that the team could get across and back in time, so it has been postponed. It was decided by the Club to run the Stockcar Stirrer competition and donate a portion of the gate fee to help in the earthquake recovery. The Youth Ministocks were running their blind pairs competition with the Street stocks running 'hit to pass,' and round 1 of the T.Q Club Championships along with the Mark Thorn Memorial for Sidecars. The stirring got underway immediately in the stockcar grade, Thunder captain Michael Paynter 8n signalled his intentions early, waiting for the lead

The street stock winner was Cody McCarrison after plenty of action in the “Hit to Pass” competition. Round one of the T.Q’s went to Alicia McLauchlan, Jayden Corkill picked up the extra race win with a dominant display while Scott Madden had the wild ride of the night, rolling his car along the wall. The extra Super stock race endured a wee battle between Jared Gray and Trevor Lineham, with Jared’s car losing the right front wheel off the car. Adie Drake and Kieran Satherley won the sidecar memorial with two wins and a second. The next meeting sees the South Island Stockcar Title on the line and War of the Wings, on December 3 when the summer action heats up.

man's first win. Coach Richard Anderson says the victory came with a mixture of joy and relief. "I'm pleased we were able to deliver the result finally, which is what we've threatened to do in previous games." Richard says that while his team conceded two, they were stronger defensively and the attack finally came right. He praised the impact of opening goal scorer Tinashe Marowa and hoped the always threatening Ermal had "opened the floodgates" with his first goal.

"This is a very even league, teams are taking points off each other like you wouldn't expect. "While we may be second to bottom we must take heart from this performance and realise we aren't that far away from being competitive with teams in the top four." Just five points cover nine teams on the points table. Tasman United will welcome traditional competition heavyweights , Waitakere United this Sunday at Trafalgar Park at 2pm.
