Nayland Pools reported a couple of tiles that fell off the diving board and several computer monitors were shaken from their desks at Civic House said Nelson City Council communications manager Paul Shattock. Nelson Cathedral, Nelson Airport, Nelson Marina, Trafalgar Centre and Saxton Stadium all reported no damage. All of the region’s schools were closed until they were assessed and given the all clear, but many remained closed for the day, including all of the region’s secondary schools. That had an impact on those students sitting NCEA exams, with exams rescheduled.

Fresh Choice Nelson had thousands of dollars worth of damage when produce was shaken from its shelves, including a large amount of red wine. But the biggest loser it seems, was the historic gun abutment in Nelson Haven. Builder Kerry Neal, who has been researching the interesting history of the structure for many years says it was built in 1890 and was used for rifle practice during WW1. Kerry says since then it has not been used for anything seriously. It used to have a walkway from what is now Weka St to its position and was supported by poles all the way out for 500m. Kerry has recently been vocal in his support to save the diminishing structure, even preparing to get out and stabilise it himself. “It’s too late now, it’s gone.” More news from the earthquakes can be found at nelsonlive.co.nz

Power lines ‘like fireworks’ Locally Owned and Operated

An incredible video posted to social media in the hours after Monday morning’s “severe” earthquake showed power lines at Tahunanui clashing, causing massive sparks and noises – but the man who took the footage initially thought it was just fireworks. Mykele Johansen was driving a truck for Bidvest on the night shift when he saw the sparking. At first he thought it was two people playing with fireworks. As he got closer he was shocked to see power lines banging together, causing huge sparks. “To be honest, I didn’t know there had been an earthquake because it was in the truck and it’s a bit rocky anyway. I thought I just must have been a power outage.” Network Tasman’s network manager Murray Hendrickson says he’s never seen anything like it in 30 years in the industry. “That footage was really interesting actually, it was the first time I’ve seen that. It’s quite rare.” He says Network Tasman had “lots” of circuit breakers trip

What you saw there was low voltage conductors being swayed around with the earthquake and clashing together. When they clash it causing that big blast.” He says the low voltage clashes don’t cause power outages but the high-voltage conductors that run above them do. Murray says while the footage was quite spectacular, it’s also dangerous. “There is hot aluminium coming down when they do clash,

so it’s not a good thing to be around. It’s really unusual and it takes earthquakes like this to create it, so it’s something that you wouldn’t want to linger around.” He says the incident will make them “go away and think” about how they can mitigate it. Mykele says that although he wasn’t too sure what caused the clashes, he knew it wasn’t a safe place to be. “That’s why the video is only 15 seconds because I just quickly got some and then I got out of there.” The video can be viewed at www.nelsonlive.co.nz

Opinion: Nelson will be tested Locally Owned and Operated

As the devastation of Monday morning’s earthquake is revealed, two things has become clear for Nelson: we were lucky, very lucky; and our region just got a whole lot busier. If the images shot from helicopters and beamed around national media on Monday are anything to go by, State Highway 1 near Kaikoura is stuffed. Mountains have slipped into the ocean, burying the roads and railways under them -- that isn’t an easy fix. Nelson and places like St Arnaud will become the main route for people travelling between Christchurch and Picton’s ferries to the North Island. The first effects are already being felt. Mark Rawson, chief executive of the Nelson Regional Development Agency, says the Nelson i-Site is experiencing extra activity from

visitors who have “obviously had their road travel plans disrupted”. He says pre-bookings before the quake were on track to be the best tourist season the region’s ever had. The loss of a route down the east coast of the South Island will amplify that as tourists who would have missed us by heading to Christchurch via Kaikoura will be forced to head over the Whangamoas, or through the Wairau Valley to St Arnaud. For trucking companies, it will be a logistical nightmare. So while this earthquake has been devastating for our friends in Marlborough and North Canterbury, we’ll have to step up to cope with the added demand that will be placed on our region.

Workmates chip in for donation Andrew Board A group of workmates at Aimex Group in Port Nelson have reached into their own pockets to buy eight televisions for the children’s ward at Nelson Hospital. The idea came up at a daily staff meeting after engineering services manager Ross Harvey heard that the ward was short a few TVs for sick children in the ward. The staff unanimously agreed to help and apprentices, admin staff and management all pulled money from their own pockets for the cause. Charge nurse manager of the paediatric ward at the hospital, Sue Smart, says she was delighted with the donation. “When kids are in hospital the TVs go pretty much 24/7, so they wear out pretty quickly and don’t function. So this is excellent, really. Overwhelming.” Sue says the televisions will go into six of the eight single rooms, the double-bedded room and the treatment room, where children “can watch DVDs while they’re having nasty stuff put in them”. Ross says the employees of Aimex were all enthusiastic about the idea. “They all voted to do it and everyone’s pockets were shared equally,

We talked about who should represent the employees of Aimex [to hand over the televisions] and they all nominated the young guys because they’re the future moving forward.” He says there’s a good comraderie

between the staff at Aimex and the donation was designed purely to be by the staff, not about pushing the Aimex brand. “It was just out of the goodness of the guys’ hearts. We all hope that it puts a smile on the kids’ faces. It’s not particularly a nice time for them when they’re there,

so hopefully it makes their time there a little easier.” The donation comes a year after Nelson Weekly and Richmond Mall donated $4000 worth of toys to the ward and Sue says while donations are accepted, sometimes they have to say ‘no’. “It sounds terrible, but money is

Nick helped secure a $350,000 Government grant in February to support the “Give a Little” online crowd funding campaign that raised $2m to purchase the Awaroa beach from 40,000 kiwi donors, including his family. The iconic beach was added to the Abel Tasman National Park in July.

School of Music Funding

The School of Music is the third iconic Nelson arts facility that Nick has helped redevelop, following on from the Theatre Royal and Suter Art Gallery. Nick advocated for change to the Regional Culture and Heritage Fund criteria to enable the School of Music to be supported and subsequently helped secure a $1.5m grant.

Kiwisaver Home Grants

Nick established the Homestart scheme last year to help first home buyers with a Government grant of up to $20,000 for the deposit on a home. Nationwide 18,000 families have been helped with grants of over $80 million including 391 in the Nelson region.

Supporting Nelson Airport Upgrade

A key priority for Nick is ensuring our region has the transport, communications and water infrastructure to support the growth in population, exports and tourism. Important projects include the upgrade of our airport terminal and port infrastructure. He is also advocating for Government funding support for the Southern Link and Waimea Community Dam.

Safer, Healthier Buildings

As Building and Housing Minister Nick has put through three major pieces of legislation for safer healthier homes. The law now requires earthquake prone buildings to be upgraded, the installation of smoke alarms and insulation in rental properties and swimming pool fencing requirements have been made more practical and safer.

Cleaning up The Haven

As Environment Minister, Nick announced a $4.2m Government grant for the clean-up of Nelson Haven. The grant is a massive saving for ratepayers while ensuring the contamination issues from boat building are addressed and supporting investment in Nelson’s port facilities.

Expanding Kahurangi National Park Five new pristine areas of forest and coastline totalling 897 hectares have been added to the Kahurangi National Park. This was unfinished business from when Nick advocated for the park’s creation in the 1990s. The park is New Zealand’s second largest and is renowned for its diversity.

Investing in Children

This year the Government increased the base benefits above inflation for the first time in 42 years as well as increasing Working for Families payments by $20 per week for lower income families. Increased investment is enabling free doctor’s visits for children, extended paid parental leave and more class space for schools.

Nelson’s most expensive apartment block unveiled: Plans for Nelson’s

Some 32 apartments, ranging in size from 37-square metre, one-bedroom units through to the top floor 144 square metre, three-bedroom and office/media room homes, are on offer at the $30 million Saltwater Creek apartment complex on Haven Rd. Prices in the condominium will range from $395,000 to $1.95 million. Construction on the new four-storey complex is scheduled to start in April next year, with apartments planned to be ready for occupancy in 2018. Airport redevelopment takes off: Activity has started at Nelson Airport as it gears up for the biggest redevelopment project in its history. In preparation for the 24-month-long redevelopment, Nelson Airport Chief Executive Rob Evans says 250 new public and staff carparks have been created at the west end of the airport behind HNZ Global. Nelson Airport has also established new management offices behind HNZ, including additional meeting rooms and office space to cater for the demands over the construction period. Bike boom prompts new business Kate Russell A bike shop with a difference has opened its doors at the former United Video site on Vanguard St, with a vision to cater to Nelson’s booming cycling population. Bikes, fresh local coffee and food, a free covered bike park, a community table, seven days service and even a shower for cyclists to use, can be found at The Bike Station, which is the first bike shop of its kind in New Zealand. Owner Brendon Mathews, who has been involved in cycling, racing and the bike industry since he was nine, says a good community-focused bike shop for Nelson is “well overdue”. He saw the opportunity to create something different earlier this year while working as a mechanic in another local bike shop. “I wasn’t aware how big biking is here – I was stunned, it’s insane,” he says. “After a while of working there I thought – ‘you know what, I see a large opportunity here’ – this is a big thing, and it’s growing.”

weekends. They will also be open from 7am to 6pm on weekdays for those who bike to work, and a ten space, covered bike park will be available to use free-of-charge for those who need somewhere to leave their bike for the day.

“Another big point of difference for us is we have a shower which will be handy for tourists and locals - because, if you’re hot and sweaty after biking to town for work, you can come in and have a shower, get changed, grab a coffee and go to work,” says Brendon. As well as offering parts, accessories and bike hire, they will be stocking a huge range of new and used bikes for every age, need and skill – including electric bikes, which are quickly gaining in popularity in Nelson. “The uptake on electric bikes here has been sensational,” says Brendon. “They are popular with second car families wanting to go down to one car, or retirees who live up on the hill - they see electric bikes as the solution and are buying these things flat out.” There is still a 300sqm tenancy available at the redeveloped site, which is being marketing through Summit Real Estate. The Bike Station can be found at 54 Vanguard St, and is open 7am – 6pm Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm on Saturdays and 10am – 3pm on Sundays.

Quake researchers size up our parks Bands

to rock Victory

Simon Bloomberg If you see someone hitting the ground with a sledgehammer in the parks and reserves around Nelson and Tasman this summer, don't be alarmed. That's because they will be part of a research programme aimed at collecting data that could ultimately help model and understand earthquake hazards in the region. The study is being conducted by Rebecca McMahon, who is a geotechnical engineer with MWH engineering consultancy, and starts this week. Rebecca is completing a Masters of Engineering and as part of her thesis she is collecting information that will help develop models showing how different soils respond to earthquake shaking. Although Rebecca and her team will be using expensive and sophisticated sensors to record the shaking, the instruments used to simulate the shaking are far more basic. "We'll be setting up a 46m line of geophones on the ground to record the shaking and then we'll hit the ground with a sledge hammer, or a big weight set up on a tripod, to cause vibrations," Rebecca says. "I'm sure we'll be getting a few curious looks from people, but we using the reserves

Rebecca says the study has a very real application because the results could be used in seismic engineering to design more quake resilient buildings. It is part of research being supported and led by QuakeCoRE, which is a national network of leading New Zealand earthquake resilience researchers. "After processing the information collected on site, the recorded

data can be used to assess how the subsoil will respond to earthquake shaking. This data will be useful for modelling earthquake shaking in Nelson and Tasman." Rebecca says similar studies have either been completed or are underway in other parts of New Zealand. The aim is to gather information from all the main centres to create a national model for further earthquake research and emergency-response planning. Rebecca says the Nelson city and Tasman district councils are sup-

porting the research by providing access to the parks and reserves for testing. She will be assisted by three university engineering and geology students, James Tyson, Joe Barratt and Markus Gellings. The study is also aligned with the Nelson-Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management group and a number of engineering consultancies which could potentially find the results useful. Rebecca hopes to complete the research project by the end of next year.

Victory Community Centre is getting ready to rock this weekend, and Nelson music lovers are invited to come and join in the fun. 'Victory Rocks' will be happening on Saturday night and will feature two well-known local rock bands – Bat Hawk and The Immigrants. Event organiser Nicola Baré says it is the first time the centre has held a live band event, and she is hoping people from all over Nelson will come along for a great night out. Tickets are available from the centre and are $15, which also includes hot drinks and food throughout the evening. All proceeds will go towards the running costs of the free and low-cost activities at the centre. Founders Beer and Waimea Estates wine will also be available at a cash bar. Doors open at 7.30pm with the bands finishing at 11pm.

Despite the rain, the Nelson Vintage Car Club soldiered on with their veteran, motorcycle and commercial rally on Saturday morning. Assistance dog to help boy, Tuesday, September 13: Thanks to the generosity of those in the community, the Costello family have been able to raise enough for an assistance dog for Blake, 4, who is autistic. Blake’s severe form of autism means he is both nonverbal and has no sense of danger. In a trial with an assistance dog earlier in the year, Blake’s parents Shon and Anna saw a significant difference in his behaviour. While the dog costs $48,000 to breed, raise and train, Anna and Shon had to contribute $20,000. They now hope to get their new assistance dog before Christmas.

Stoke senior to shave 65cm of hair, Tuesday, October 11: Last Thursday, Jai Regan proudly presented Jayne Marwick from Cancer Society Nelson with a cheque for $775. After making the decision to shave off her hair for cancer, Jai has been growing it for the last two years. Her hair was 65cm when it was shaved off and sent to Freedom Wigs in Dunedin. As well as the $775 raised by Jai, $300 of that coming from the members of Stoke Seniors, the Cancer Society will also be receiving the money raised from the sale of Jai’s hair, although that total is yet to be calculated.

Health and wellness expo comes to Nelson Jessie Johnston The Nelson Health and Wellness Expo is on this weekend and will be full of beneficial information and services for your mind, body and spirit. Neighbourhood Support celebrates local members Kate Russell Two members of Neighbourhood Support Nelson will be honoured today in Neighbourhood Support New Zealand’s inaugural national awards. Gold awards will be presented to Peter Crins, Nelson Police Community Constable, and Jane Bealing, who is the co-ordinator of a Neighbourhood Support group in The Wood. Peter, who was instrumental in setting up Neighbourhood Support Nelson ten years ago, will be given a gold police officer award for services “above and beyond the call of duty”. He is actively involved in the organisation, and has served on the committee since its inception, including five years as chairman. He has also provided a lot of practical advice and support to Neighbourhood Support groups on security and safety issues, and has ensured that groups have been kept

Jane and her husband John got neighbours together to discuss ways they could prepare for disasters, drawing up a list of skills and resources in the neighbourhood that would be useful in a disaster - such as ladders, chainsaws, and people with nursing or first aid skills. She also obtained a map of properties in the neighbourhood from Nelson City Council, and marked where household amenities such as power and water mains were located. National Chairperson Sharleen Stirling-Lindsay says the awards are an opportunity to recognise outstanding community service by individuals, groups, police officers and partner organisations. “There are thousands of likeminded Neighbourhood Support members in communities across New Zealand, who give their time and are committed in making our communities safer and more caring places in which to live,” she says.

Around 19 New Zealand cider companies brought over 80 different cider varieties to Nelson and the public responded, with hundreds braving the rain and heading to Founders Park on Saturday afternoon. “Considering the day, the turnout is brilliant, I would rate this as being a hell of a success,” says Rob Marshall of McCashins. “Given the apple industry and so forth and cider being such an important part of the Nelson, the concept of it is long overdue, we should have had it years ago.” From the traditional crisp and sweet apple ciders to those slightly more experimental, like the Mussel Inn’s Hot Dogfish, a spicy chilli cider, there was something for everyone’s taste buds and plenty of information about the cider-making process. “It’s really interesting seeing the consumer interest in what type of cider they want to try, and learning all about the different sorts,” says Emma McCashin. “They’re asking lots of questions, quite technical stuff, they

New name, new venue for popular festival Its name may have changed, but the region’s best loved wine and food festival is still promising to deliver the same great experience it has for the last 14 years. The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival is changing its name to the Nelson Wine and Food Festival, and the February 2017 event will be the final year it will be held at Middle Earth Winery before it moves to the A&P Richmond Showgrounds in 2018. The Rotary Club of Richmond, who organise the iconic community fundraiser, say the move is in response to a call to provide more shade and easier access for public, being that it is on the Suburban Bus Line route, Tasman Cycle Trail and has space for overnight campervans. Organisers say that they are expecting over 300 campervans at next year’s festival, and people are welcome to stay onsite in the winery on Saturday and Sunday night for only $10 per night, per van. An impressive line up of local musicians will entertain throughout the day, including Pete Madsen and Family, Dixie Prix, Cruise Control and the Neal Brothers.

We fo-

cused the event on tastings and it was very much about being a family-focused event and most people were genuinely there to try different ciders, rather than to overindulge.” With positive feedback from all involved, Ali says the New Zealand Cider Festival will most definitely make a return in 2017. “We also have to say a big thanks to Nelson City Council for making it happen, without the funding support from the Nelson Regional Development Agency new events like this don’t get off the ground," says Ali.

Celebrating 40 year sister city relationship Mayor Rachel Reese has formally re-signed Nelson’s sister city agreement with Miyazu at a ceremony on Friday. The relationship between Nelson and Miyazu is the longeststanding sister city agreement for the city and the event marks the 40 year milestone for this relationship, originally formalised in May 1976. A six strong delegation from Miyazu visited the city to mark the important milestone, including Deputy Mayor Kiyokazu Ueda, Mr Minoru Adachi, President of the Miyazu New Zealand Association, and members of the NelsonMiyazu Sister City Association. Mayor Reese says, “To mark 40 years is a great achievement, and shows how strong this relationship is.” Earlier this year, Nelson also hosted a delegation from Miyazu schools. While in September, a Nelson delegation visited Miyazu. “I am heartened to see that the close ties between our

two cities that have flourished over the years are continuing with the next generation. It was a pleasure to host a delegation from Miyazu schools earlier this year. During their busy visit the students were able to spend time with Nelson’s Youth Councillors and I hope that planted new seeds of friendship between both sets of young residents that will be of long-term benefit for all,” says Mayor Reese. The relationship between the two cities has thrived over the past 40 years. In 1996, a New Zealand-wide survey of Sister City programmes, undertaken by Massey University, showed that the Nelson-Miyazu link was the most focused and built on a solid base of people-to-people interaction. The NelsonMiyazu affiliation was cited as a model to follow in setting up successful Sister City relationships.

Councils seek regional view on allowing Easter Sunday trading Nelson City and Tasman District councils are seeking community feedback on whether to allow Easter Sunday trading in the region. The Government has given local councils the power to decide whether to allow shops to open on Easter Sunday from 2017. If the councils decide to allow Easter trading, employees have the right under the new law to refuse to work on Easter Sunday without giving a reason and without any repercussions from their employer. The collaborative approach is an effective and efficient way to understand the community’s views on Easter Sunday trading. Community organisations to have their say on funding priorities Council is seeking ideas and information from community organisations around strategic priority areas for 2017/18 Community Investment Funding. A brief survey will open from 16 – 30 November 2016 at nelson.govt.nz/community-investment-survey. If you are a not for profit community organisation we would greatly appreciate your feedback.

Work will begin next week to construct a new footpath at Tahunanui Beach. This will be an extension of the existing path along past the skate park and the main back beach carpark. This will make it much safer for pedestrians in the area. You will also notice some areas looking a bit bare of vegetation. This is part of an ongoing programme at Tahunanui that sees weed trees and shrubs removed from some areas. Next winter, it will be replanted with natives that suit the coastal environment with the help of local school children and the Nelson community.

Council will be holding a monthly Dog’s Breakfast event from November to March, to raise awareness about toxic algae. The first event will be on 29 November, from 10am to 1.30pm, on the Maitai Walkway by the Riverside Pool. Call by to pick up information on how to keep your dog safe during the warmer summer months when toxic algae can bloom. Toxic algae mats have a strong musty odour which can attract dogs to eat them, but the algae contain toxins that are harmful to dogs and humans. There will also be dog treats for your canine friend, plus useful information for dog owners. The event will be cancelled if wet.

Forestry – the way forward Earlier this year, Council sought an expert review to determine how its production forestry should be managed into the future. Council's 640ha of production forestry were established as a commercial investment and to protect Council’s water supplies from the effects of erosion and any associated sediment. The forests are in four main blocks: the Brook, Maitai, Marsden and Roding, comprising 87 separate stands. 92% of forest area is in Pinus radiata; Douglas fir makes up 6%, macrocarpa 1% and eucalyptus and other varieties another 1%. The current make-up is a legacy of previous attempts to diversify species planted. Approximately 40% of Council's production forestry is nearing harvestable age. Harvesting prior to 2020 would put Council's forests slightly ahead of New Zealand's looming "wall of wood", a predicted glut in the market, making the harvest potentially more profitable. The review highlighted how Council's involvement in forestry intersects with many of Council's activities, both regulatory and non-regulatory. It sets out proposed responses to a range of factors: proximity of residential development; the increase in mountain biking and impact of harvesting on tracks; possible Nelson Plan requirements; and the conflict between Council's investment in removal of wilding pines with its own Douglas fir stands. A number of key recommendations were made to address these and other issues, which Council has now adopted. These include: • Retire approximately 140ha of production forestry that is inappropriate for this use or uneconomic. This will remove this area from the portfolio held for investment purposes and allow for investigation of other uses for the land. • Destroy the Douglas fir and acacia stands as a priority, as these species have a high risk of spreading into reserve land.

• Replant areas in Radiata pine where it is appropriate and economic to do so. • Prepare a forest management plan for Council approval that is consistent with the recommendations of the review, including a rolling five-year harvesting plan. • Establish a Forestry Advisory Group with delegated authority to approve forestry and harvesting management strategy and plans, engage contractors, approve budgets and decide any other matters relating to commercial forestry operations. Harvesting in the Roding block began in October and harvesting of some stands in the Maitai block will begin in January/February. This could affect some popular recreational tracks, either with temporary closures or detours being put in place. This will be confirmed with the forestry contractor nearer to the time. Keep an eye on the Council website or Facebook page for more information.

Share your best tip for using up food leftovers and be in to win with the Love Your Leftovers competition. The average New Zealand family wastes $560 a year by throwing away edible food rather than using it up. Ways to reduce this are to buy only what you need, or use up leftovers for lunches and snacks. This competition is designed to encourage people to share their favourite leftover recipe so that others can use them. The Nelson A&P Show is always a much-anticipated weekend on the community events calendar, showcasing the region’s agricultural and pastoral activities, as well as a range of local organisations and businesses. The 2016 show will be no different, continuing the tradition of offering a full on, fun family day out with a huge amount of entertainment and attractions to keep everyone busy. One and two day tickets to this weekend’s show are available at early bird prices until 5pm Friday from Richmond Mall, More FM, Bowater Toyota Nelson and Motueka and Haven Mazda. Gate sales will also be available on both Saturday and Sunday with one day entry for adults costing $15, children $5 and family’s $25. Yulia Maclean will be headlining at the Main Stage at 3pm both days, there will be competitions galore thanks to a variety of stall holders and MoreFM will be giving away some awesome prizes throughout the weekend,

so make sure you keep an eye out for their site. Blast Entertainment will be keeping the kids entertained with their great range of inflatable activities, plus, there will be laser tag, an inflatable climbing wall and George Sturgeon will be there with the carnival amusements including the Ferris Wheel and Merry-GoRound. The strongman competition will, of course, be back, Town and Country Vets will be bringing a range of cute and cuddly creatures for the animal nursery, while some impressive Clydesdales will feature in a display of acrobatic riding in front of the second grandstand. There will be a huge range of food sites to choose from, as well as the option to bring your own picnic which you can enjoy as you watch the wood chopping, the dog trials, Saturday’s shearing competition or the duck herding display. On Sunday, bring along your dog and enter it into the Scurry at 1pm where they must sniff out the hidden treat or, if you have

Nelson bodybuilder Mark Anderson achieved his dream of a NABBA Mr Universe over-40s title at his third attempt, in Birmingham last week. Mark is the first New Zealander to win a title at the famed bodybuilding competition, which was made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger “In 2013 got second, 2015 I got second and finally won this year. “The competition is so tough and I travelled 26 hours – four planes, a train and a taxi just to get there. “It was a big trip, but you have to keep training and to come so close it was a case of having to keep going. “To stand there as a winner in Birmingham was great, I was very proud.”

down backstage and figure out who is looking good, but you just don’t know until you get out there.”

Mark says the diet is hard as he searches for a subtwo per cent body fat ratio. “For the last month I ate

fish, chicken, oatmeal and a lot of vegetables. “I’ve been competing for 21 years, so you get to know

your body.” It’s been an ambition since his dad would make him go to the gym three times a week since he was 14. In 40 shows since 1996, Mark has not finished any lower than second. Mark took all his food on the plane in carry-on. “On the flights over I would have had 20 litres of water over the 26 hours. “It all helps your body flush everything.” “I carried on my meals and my headphones.” Mark says he gets some looks for his muscular physique. “Kids think I’m a wrestler but people overseas are more willing to come up and have their photo taken.” Mark says he now eases off his diet slightly for the next couple of weeks before preparations begin again to defend the title he worked so hard to capture.

Nelson judo on the rise after national honours Jacob Page

These are exciting times for the Nelson Judo Club. The club, which had just a handful of members three years ago, has rejuvenated itself and now has six national titles and three national bronze medals to show for it. The club now has more than 70 members, including a strong junior base, which is exciting considering the club is hoping to move to bigger, more modern facilities by Victory Boxing at the end of the year Paul Hammett, in the masters men’s open and Joshua Nahi in the senior men under 100kg, both won gold, while Louise Kelly, senior and junior women’s under 70kg and Raphael Ravenau, in the senior men under 66kg and masters men under-73kg each won two gold medals respectively. Jesse Wall, Zak Hammett and Aidan Burke all earned bronze medals. The improvement in green-belt Joshua typified the surge in the club, according to coach and mentor John Maxwell. “He won the North Island,

South Island and National Championships,” John says. “At the start of the year he was a yellow belt and now he’s beating the best black belts in the country

convincingly and he can represent New Zealand. “Louise has been an Oceania champion and if she can avoid injury and social pressures then

she is on the fast track to the Commonwealth Games.” John says the club is “a bit like a family” as they are more forgiving and people “check their egos at

the door”. “They’re here to train hard, not rip each other’s heads off. “We have phenomenal support with our parents. They don’t do a dump and run and treat us like a babysitting service, many of them stay and get involved and many have taken up judo because of their children or grandchildren. “We all train to compete, we are working towards things.” The club is hopeful of continuing to create judo players who are competing on the international stage. They are no strangers to producing Commonwealth Games-capable athletes, but it is hoped the new facility would boost the profile and popularity of the sport in Nelson. The club is keen to invest in its future and the junior numbers was highlighted at the Central Districts Closed Judo Championships at Nelson College Hall on Sunday. A large number of Nelson juniors competed with distinction at the event which saw a good crowd of family and friends supporting the athletes all day.

Change of scenery for pool swimmers Simon Bloomberg It was a long day for coach Andy Adair's young open water swimmers last Thursday. The 21-swimmer squad had already completed their regular two hour, 7km session in the Richmond Aquatic Centre in the morning before arriving at the Nelson Yacht Club later in the day for the opening round of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series. Then, after completing a 650m swim in rough conditions, some of the squad warmed down with a 2km swim from the Nelson Yacht Club to Tahunanui Beach. Andy says open water swimming requires an additional set of skills. Swimming in a straight line is often difficult while contending with waves, tides and limited visibility can be challenging. "They need to get some experience in open water before we go to Taupo, so that's why we are doing the Port Nelson swims,"

Andy says. "They are all very accomplished swimmers but open water is very different from the pool. "There's no black line to follow and there's the sea conditions to contend with. One hundred and forty-eight swimmers competed in the opening round of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series, which continues every Thursday for the next 18 weeks.

The Ministry of Health is providing a Special Support Service for former sawmill workers who were historically exposed to pentachlorophenol (PCP) during the course of their employment in the 1950s to the late 1980s. The Sawmill Workers Service aims to help people stay healthy by supporting the early detection of diseases, promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing modifiable risk factors. The Sawmill Workers Service is based on a free annual health check delivered by your usual GP.
