Consents delayed by lack of staff Sara Hollyman Consultants are being used by Nelson City Council to help with a backlog of unprocessed building consents. A lack of staff, along with a change
in IT systems, has contributed to 19 per cent of building consents missing their deadline and filling vacant positions has been identified as key to meeting a Long Term Plan goal of lifting council performance. An audit risk and finance
subcommittee report from February showed that lack of staff was having an impact on consents being issued on time. In the report, Arlene Akhlaq, manager business improvement, says good progress has been made
in filling vacancies within the capital projects and utilities teams, however a number of internal promotions, transfers and resignations has left other positions open. A planning and regulatory committee meeting held late last
month also reported that staff vacancies was a contributor to 19 per cent of resource consents not being processed in the correct time frame of 20 days.

Healthy Hives the bee’s knees Sara Hollyman With hobby beekeepers on the rise around the region, the Nelson Beekeepers Club are offering a free check-up of hives to ensure their health heading into winter. The club is giving any beekeeper in Nelson and Tasman an opportunity to have their hives inspected by experienced beekeepers free of charge, with a focus on identifying American Foul Brood disease, Varroa infestation and general colony conditions including queen-less hives or those with too many drones. Nelsonian Thalassa Kawachi has just had her first full season as a hobby beekeeper and says she was so happy when she saw that they were offering the hive checks. “I paid to get mine checked, which is fine, but any help is good help.”

Healthy Hives the bee’s knees FROM PAGE 1 She says what started out as fun with a single beehive in her backyard has grown to now having eight hives at different locations. “I have young children and I’m a biologist so we both love bugs and biology in general and bees are quite interesting insects.” She says it’s been a successful year which has provided a “little bit of honey” and a big learning curve. Thalassa wants others to know that it’s a hobby that can quickly turn into a job. “There are so many factors involved and it’s a big responsibility, if you don’t take care of them diseases can spread to other hives and there’s the

maintenance.” The Nelson Beekeepers Club has grown to include more than 100 members and club secretary Catherine Moisan says it is the responsibility of all beekeepers to keep an eye on the health of hives. “Beekeeping can be tricky, and sometimes help and support can go a long way.” She says the checks are a good way of troubleshooting any problems before winter and the experienced beekeepers performing them will provide advice and support to help manage hive condition. Accused arsonists appear in court Locally Owned and Operated

Jonty Dine The couple allegedly responsible for the Moutere and Dovedale fires appeared in Nelson District Court last Wednesday and police are still hunting a third person involved. A 34-year-old man is accused is facing two charges of arson and the co-accused female, 24, one charge. The pair are alleged to have intentionally set fire to scrub near Dovedale on March 6 while the man is also alleged to have lit the Moutere Highway fire on February 27. The defendant’s lawyer, Tagan Lyall, cited a Facebook post in which threats were made towards the suspects in a bid to be granted name suppression. The defendant walked into the dock with his face concealed with a manila folder but was ordered to remove it by Judge David Ruth. Judge Ruth says he understood the feeling of the community being “not very nice” toward the defendant but denied the request for name suppression. “People are angry, surprise, surprise.” Judge Ruth says he did not consider the Facebook threats to be genuine however Lyall is appealing this.

NEWS Public favour Waimea Rd speed drop: Reducing the speed limit on a 1.3km section of Waimea Rd from 70kmph to 50kmph is the preferred option for Nelson residents. Nelson City Council’s works and infrastructure committee heard public submissions to the speed change last Wednesday. Altogether, 89 submissions were received in total. 59 submissions were in favour of lowering the speed limit and 25 were in favour of leaving it as it is. Six submissions suggested adopting a 60kmph limit. The next steps are for the committee to decide on how to proceed at a meeting on 28 March and then put a recommendation to a full council meeting, to take place on 2 May. Stoke youth park: Council have decided to undertake further consultation with the Stoke community before developing any kind of youth park in the suburb. The community services committee agreed on the recommendation, which was put forward by parks and facilities asset manager, Andrew Petheram. A development for Stoke’s youth, such as a skatepark, has been in the pipeline for the last decade, with no plans ever coming to fruition, despite support from the public. Some council reserves and tracks reopen: Due to the recent rainfall and after seeking advice from Fire and Emergency, council reopened a portion of their reserves and tracks at the weekend. This includes, The Grampians Reserve, and the section of Botanical Hill on the sports grounds side up to Centre of NZ marker. The following tracks in the Codgers Trails areas are also open: Young Codgers, Dun Mountain Trail - up to the junction with Pipeline, Pipeline, Gully, Tu Meke, Tasman Journeys, Crazy Horse, Jacks Track (from Dun Mountain Trail to Middle Road - no access to Atmore Terrace), Lower Firball (below Middle Road), Whaneke, Viral Flow and P51.

Nelson air terminal so hot people feared ‘heat-stroke’ The head of Nelson Airport accepts that its new terminal building has struggled with overheating issues this summer, making working conditions difficult for staff. Workers and passengers told RNZ they were surprised that it felt hotter inside the terminal than out and have questioned why it does not have airconditioning throughout the building. The first stage of the new airport’s terminal was opened to the public last October. It was designed with a natural ventilation system, so it would be as environmentally–friendly as possible. But as temperatures in the region soared over the summer, passengers like Selena Andreassend found the heat stifling. “It was actually probably hotter inside than outside to be honest because there’s no ventilation, there’s no wind. “I was surprised because it’s a beautiful building but with no air-con, I’d rather be outside,” she said. Large fans had been put in the building to try to cool down passengers and staff, but Ms Andreassend said they did not have the desired effect. “They don’t really do much, I didn’t feel cool from them, that’s for sure,” she said. Staff working in the terminal who were members of the union E tū told their delegate it had been shockingly hot and the fans just pushed the hot air around. Photo: Kate Russell. “They thought the new design was meant to be one of these ergonomic type of arrangements where the heat was supposed to be transferred. “It didn’t seem to be operating that way, at times people felt like they were having a heat-stroke it was so hot,” he said. Nelson Airport’s chief executive Robert Evans acknowledged that the temperatures had been very high and the heat wave took them by surprise. “I think they were into the high 20s and maybe up to 30 degrees at certain points. “We introduced industrial fans around the place just to keep the air flow going,
we brought ice cream vans just to keep the morale high,” he said. Stage two of the build would be finished in October and once that was completed, Mr Evans said overheating shouldn’t be a problem. “I think we just need to wait and get the building completed and fully operational and then we’ll be able to see it really perform. “We’ve just been slightly caught out, we accept that. We’ve been caught out by a very a warm summer and the building not performing the way it should,” he said. – Joanna MacKenzie of RNZ

Bryan keeps couple rocking after 15 years Kate Russell (Everything I Do) I Do It For You. That is the Bryan Adams song that Matt and Lucy Newberry chose for the first dance at their wedding in 2004. Fifteen years on and the Stoke couple are hoping to recreate that same magic moment at Trafalgar Park when Bryan Adams plays there this Saturday night. “Well, I might get up and dance if he plays it, but I don’t know if Matt would,” laughs Lucy. “He might if he’s had a few beers.” The childhood sweethearts have known each other since they were babies. Now in their 40s, they describe themselves as “huge” fans of the Canadian rocker. “We’ve always loved him, he was massive in our day - a real legend,” Lucy says. “We chose his song for our first wedding dance because of the lovely words, but all his songs are great.” And like any other busy parents, they are looking forward to a well-deserved night off. “It’s going to be great.” This weekend’s show marks the first time the multi-platinum
recording artist has played in Nelson and rounds off of a huge summer of music in the region. Adams will come armed with a career spanning over four decades and a signature brand of feel-good rock n roll hits, including Reckless, Heaven, Summer of ‘69 and Run to You. The rain poured but so was the beer as punters tested the latest sensations from craft the beer world at Marchfest on Saturday. Event organiser Shelley Haring says ticket sales were up on last year with under just 4000 flooding into Founders Heritage Park for the 12th edition of the annual beer festival. Shelley says feedback was fantastic for the new tasting bar which gave drinkers a paddle allowing up to five tasters from the selection of 15 beers. The rain certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of festivalgoers. “Everyone was celebrating the rain because we needed it.” Shelley says with more music acts, more beers and more people, the festival can be considered a stellar success. “Everyone has said they are loving all the local beers plus the five guest breweries we invited.” Marlborough couple and craft beer-fiends Carl Slyfield and Gemma Wilkes say they made the trip over the hill especially for the festival.

I don’t really think people noticed the rain too much either which says a lot about the atmosphere.”

Waratahs Forest fire concert date shifted Locally Owned and Operated

The date of the forest fire concert has been shifted to accommodate the different emergency services involved, as support for the event grows. The concert, featuring the Waratahs and up to four local bands including local duo Dust and Gold, will now be held on April 13 at the Richmond A&P Showgrounds, beginning at around 1pm. Organiser Steve Page says support for the event has been fantastic and he wants to thank everyone who has got behind it, including the Waratahs, who have been brilliant working in with the date change.

Nelson’s Andrea Babington didn’t know she wanted to be a funeral director until the unthinkable happened. She lost her brother and two grandparents - all in a ten-month period. At the time, Andrea was in her mid-20s and the one thing that resonated with her during the funeral planning process was the way her family was treated by their funeral director. “We had him for both services, and I was just amazed at the empathy, wisdom and guidance he gave us through that tough time,” she says. “I thought, ‘one day, that’s what I want to do’.” She has now been working in the industry for seven years and has just graduated with her diploma in funeral directing. Andrea was alongside 22 other graduates from the Wellington Institute of Technology, who are the only providers of the diploma. “It’s huge for me. I’m immensely privileged that I’ve had formal
training,” says Andrea, who is a funeral director at Simplicity Funeral Nelson. “I have put in immense hours and time into it and my family and my team here at Simplicity have been nothing but supportive.” Andrea says it has always been her goal to get qualified. “It gives you more knowledge and it’s made me question the way in which I do things,” she says. “It also gives you a really strong foundation in the practices, legalities and the psychology of the bereaved.” “And although it’s not a career path many people follow, Andrea says it’s the perfect fit, as her own personal journey has given her an enriched empathy when connecting with families.” “People often say, ‘you must be a special kind of person to do your job’, but I feel blessed that life has brought me to this place where my experiences give my career meaning and purpose.” “I don’t see my role as a job - it as a vocation and an immense privilege.”

NZ Post partners with Paper Plus Locally Owned and Operated
Jonty Dine Nelson may have lost its post shop but thanks to a partnership with a local business, service is set to continue in the city. From March 7, Paperplus absorbed the former NZ Post branch on Hardy St, which has been taken over by Kiwibank. The shift means the new branch will have extended hours for customers whilst maintaining its services. Paper Plus Nelson director David Moir says it has been a smooth transition. “We have been busy since opening the doors on Thursday.” David says they managed to retain the experienced NZ Post staff during the move. “It’s great that people will see those familiar faces when they come in.” All the services that were available at the Kiwibank branch will remain with business as usual other than extended hours.
New Zealand Post head of retail, Mark Yagmich, says he’s thrilled to continue the partnership with David Moir and Sean Weir and their Paper Plus. “We already successfully work with local businesses in over 800 locations across the country and have done in many locations for years.” Mark says the model of working with local businesses is more financially sustainable for NZ Post, in an everchanging mix of postal services usage. “It’s also good for the businesses we work with, as they enjoy additional income both from transacting postal services on our behalf and by having more customers coming through their doors to pick up their parcel or send a postcard.” Mark says customers will also benefit from Paper Plus being open longer on Saturday and also open on Sunday.

Clean sweep for pipe band at regionals Kate Russell Nelson’s Celtic Pipe Band is celebrating after dominating the regional championships in Christchurch at the weekend. Two of their bands competed over two days, with the Grade 4A grade band taking out first place in Saturday’s competition at Innovation Park in Templeton, which included the March, Strathspey and Reel (MSR), the Medley, and the Street March event. They also won Sunday’s competition at Dean’s Bush. Band spokesperson Nicole Ecklein says, “you put in the hard yards and it’s rewarding to do well when the competition is stiff. All the bands that compete work really hard, so we feel very privileged to have a win.” Their other band, at Grade 2 level, won the medley section in Saturday’s competition and placed second overall on Sunday. “Our band leaders have high expectations and it’s truly an honour to be part of that and of piping in New Zealand in general,” Nicole says. The regional competition is considered the runup to the nationals, which will take place in Dunedin on 29 and 30 March.

Not another expensive consultant This council is just champion at wasting money and driving up all our rates. But there is no excuse for this in a city where sunshine wages and the elderly relying upon superannuation are scraping to survive. Appointing a full-time manager for a city development programme, talking so far in utter clichés, is going to cost us all. An easy priority to save money is for the council to stop wasting ours on constantly buying in unnecessary consultants - and on junk art, pointless installations - like that tinny cloak - now to be erected on a depressing black background. Then to stop uglifying the city with brutal architecture like that square box, a quite wrong addition to the Suter. Doing away with the budget given to the aesthetically-challenged arts committee with their hands always out would also help pre-
serve the best of the city - where what remains of a colonial architecture is one of the best things about us. Nelson Matters Nelson’s summer of fires and drought is hopefully at an end with this week’s rain. Three issues deserve comment in the aftermath. Firstly, my anger at those arrested for arson last week up the Sunrise Valley. We owe a huge thanks to the forestry contractors and Nelson Sun Club for helping police nab these scumbags. Committing arson in a community that has had thousands of people evacuated from their homes and hundreds putting their lives at risk fighting these fires is unforgiveable. It is worse than those burgling homes after Christchurch’s earthquakes in that it is further
risking people’s lives. Parliament should consider doubling the penalty for criminal offending of this sort during civil emergencies. Secondly, the Government needs to come to the aid of owners whose properties have been damaged by the wide fire breaks put through their pasture, fences and driveways. Fire and Emergency NZ did the right thing in creating the breaks to contain the Pigeon Valley blaze during this emergency. However, if the government damages someone’s property, they need to fix it. I have been raising this issue on behalf of property owners for over a month but have been
ignored by Government Ministers. The uncertainty is adding to affected property owner’s distress as these valley communities try to recover from the fires. The Government is providing hundreds of millions in foreign aid, tens of millions to Northland in politicized grants but is penny pinching in helping Nelson through the worst fires in New Zealand in over 60 years. The third issue is that we learn from this drought the importance of water storage. We only use 1% of the 10 trillion litres of water that falls and flows through Nelson and Tasman each year. The Maitai Dam also enabled Nelson to assist neighbouring Tasman. The Maitai Dam cost of $10 million was completely paid off in 2005. Ratepayers today just pay for its

maintenance and it proves the merits of investing in long term infrastructure. Some people have advocated home water storage tanks as a better alternative than dams. This ignores the economics. Household tanks cost about $400 per 1,000 litres, the Maitai Dam cost equated to $2.50 per 1,000 litres back then. The Waimea Community Dam cost of $105 million equates to $8 per 1,000 litres. Pressie cards to help those affected by fires Sara Hollyman A Nelson roofing company has given a boost to both individuals and businesses affected by the Tasman fires by posting out $2500 worth of Visa Prezzy cards to the community. Freeman Roofing knew they wanted to do something to help as soon as they saw how well the community came together in the region’s time of need, but sales marketing and operations manager Dallas Spence says it took some time to decide
exactly what that would be. “With all the fires out in Wakefield there seemed to be a lot of assistance, it was awesome to see the community rally around, so we thought it might be better to wait till we could see an actual opportunity that might be really important and fit really nicely.” Early last week Dallas placed a post on a local Facebook page asking members to nominate a friend or family member who had been affected by the fires. Using these nominations, the

played a weekly match on the main road, halting the game when it was necessary to allow traffic to pass. The game was well supported with several local clubs forming and the Moutere area went on to produce some notable cricket players.

Dallas says to be able to do something a month down the track is about reminding people how everyone came together as a community and that people are still hurting. “Often in a crisis or horrible situation, someone passing away etc. everyone seems to get a lot of assistance at the time but it’s a month later when someone shows up with some flowers or a card or gives you a phone call that really makes a big difference. “Business owners have been impacted with their incomes and that’s their livelihood, everyone’s gone back to their
lives, or trying to piece together their lives and that’s when you need to step in again.” Dallas says the unintended result of putting the post on a public Facebook page is that he has heard so many amazing stories of what people have gone through. “All I asked for was a friend or family member who had been impacted and their postal address but what I’ve ended up getting is nominated stories about the impact on families and maybe their animals or how they’ve been evacuated a couple of times. “Actually, just reading these people’s stories and what they’ve had to endure over the past month and a half is quite humbling.”

The Nelson Repertory Theatre production of ‘Allo ‘Allo! kicks off tonight and runs for four shows only. The company last performed the show back in 1999 and it will be a trip down memory lane for two of the cast members, Tom McInerney and Noel Stephens.

“The pair featured in that show and they are back in our latest version playing the same characters,” says director Joanne Kilsby. The ‘Allo ‘Allo! stage show is based on the hugely popular TV comedy series which ran from 1982 to 1992 and is written by the original writers, David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd. It follows the adventures of René, a cafe owner in a small town in German-occupied France during World War II. And as well as entertaining crowds, the cast has also found a way to give something back to the community. Joanne says they will also be donating all the monies from
their programme sales to a local fire station. “The team at Nelson Repertory like to donate back to the community who supports us and for this show we have chosen the Upper Moutere Fire Station,” she says. “Roger Dunham who plays Officer Crabtree in ‘Allo ‘Allo! is a volunteer firefighter at the station and helped fight the Pigeon Valley fire.” The station will use the funds to buy specialist equipment, such as a thermal camera. ‘Allo ‘Allo! is on at the Theatre Royal from 13 – 16 March, tickets are available from TicketDirect or the Theatre Royal box office.

Broods come home for charity show Award-winning Kiwi duo Broods are returning home to Nelson for a charity concert to give back to those who helped during the recent fires. The now L.A. based siblings Georgia and Caleb Nott have teamed up with Air New Zealand to put on the invite-only concert to 1000 local emergency services staff, volunteers and affected members of the community on 21 March at Nelson College. Firefighters, Civil Defence, ambulance staff, police and animal rescue will all be on the guest list. The Nelson-born duo are set to tour the country this month on the back of their new album ‘Don’t Feed The Pop
Monster’ and say they are honoured to be putting on a show to lift the spirits of the community. “We’ve been keeping up with all the news of the fires in Nelson. It’s really devastating to hear that our hometown is suffering so much,” Georgia told fans via social media. “We thought a small way we could help was by teaming up with Air New Zealand and doing a show for everyone who helped out with the relief,” added Caleb. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says the concert is a fantastic way to give thanks to relief workers.
“It’s been an exceptionally challenging time, and this concert gives us the perfect opportunity to show our gratitude to everyone involved in fighting the fires. We have been overwhelmed by the compassion and dedication shown to us from so many organisations.” Tickets for the event will be gifted to emergency services workers and volunteers as well as Air New Zealand employees. A small number of tickets will be available to other deserving Nelson locals via competitions on Air New Zealand social media channels and radio station ZM from this week.

“I felt it would be money well spent on something new somewhere else. I kept seeing the building on New Street pop up online, so my work colleague Bridgette and I went along and realised it was perfect; it had just the right amount of rooms and being in town would be better for us in the long term – we would get more foot traffic here than Nile Street." She says the new premises allows them to have the same number of carparks at the rear of the property. "It’s a smaller space; easier to heat and to cool down. Our previous location was beautiful, but the New Street building has its own charm; we all love it here.” Filled with character, Woman Beauty’s new home has been
tastefully decorated throughout, with four treatment rooms including a double room and a relaxation lounge, “where clients can go after they’ve had their treatment,” says Delene.

Older residents and their friends and families enjoying a previous year’s Positive Ageing Expo with its many interesting outdoor stalls and demonstrations at the Headingly Centre, Richmond. The popular Positive Ageing Expo returns on March 22nd, celebrating its 11th successive year since 2008. Taking place at the Headingly Centre between 10am and 3pm, the event is a great opportunity to come and have a go at an activity, ask questions of service providers and make connections with community groups. The expo has grown significantly over the past decade, now attracting more than 2000 people each year and has also been recognised with a Trustpower Community Award commendation. The Positive Ageing Expo is a collaboration with Tasman District Council, Nelson City Council, Positive Aging Forum,
Age Concern, Health Action and Ministry of Social Development. There will be over 80 stallholders this year, representing a broad range of groups and organisations and activities. “We are always adding new things to the event and this year we’ve got something a bit different – we have Tyson the therapeutic Clydesdale horse who will soothe your soul,” says Tasman District Council Community Partnerships Coordinator, Mike Tasman- Jones. “Tyson has a great rapport with older adults. We will also have the Nelson Ark dogs involved with the ‘Meet and Greet’ team. People who aren’t able to have pets of their own can

interact with these dogs, which is wonderful.” The Expo continues with the theme of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing,’ with its five elements: being active, learning, connecting with others, keeping our heads in the present and giving to others; generally being examples of how we can use daily activity to improve our well-being. “The aim is to raise awareness that activities that feel good are the things that feed our sense of well-being and should be incorporated into daily life,” says Mike. Margaret Goff didn’t really know what she was starting when she opened the doors of the Suburbs Football Clubrooms at Saxton Field during the Pigeon Valley Fire. In the same way that one small spark started the blaze, one small idea turned into a massive community-led volunteer response that provided thousands of meals, shoulders to cry on and letters of thanks to firefighters. The Nayland Primary School teacher aide and part-time cleaner at the clubrooms says she had the facility to help so opened its doors.

“I really only thought it was going to be me in the kitchen and maybe a couple of others helping.” The first call went out at 2.59pm on the first day of the fire, and saw 10 volunteers arrive and food start to trickle in. “After our first night we only had six loaves of bread and a few vegetables left so we put the word out and suddenly we were inundated,” she says. Margaret and her team fed anyone who needed it, from Police, to firefighters, Civil Defence, evacuees, HUHA, vets and SPCA. After nearly three weeks of 15hour days, some of her students got the opportunity to thank
her last Friday. “I got asked if I could stay at school for a staff meeting, but there wasn’t one,” she says. Instead, Principal Janice Gulbransen had assembled a small group of children to present her with a volunteer award. “Tragedy brings out the caring that we have for others and people step up in many ways of support,” Janice says. The school ensured Margaret was still paid while she carried out her volunteer work. She was presented with a certificate of appreciation, a Volunteer New Zealand badge, a $50 supermarket gift card and a Wax Bar voucher.

After setting herself the goal to complete it and putting in hours of training, Renee conquered the 10km course to reinforce her t-shirt’s mantra. “I like to aim high and achieve things and running 10km is a big challenge for me.” Renee was one of 400 runners and walkers to take part in the 29th annual event. is forced to seek snow overseas. The Nelson Intermediate student spends her summers in China and most recently Japan, last year spending 123 days on snow. Ruby says it can be tough to be in and out of school so often. “But if you want to be good, you have to train lots.” Ruby trained six days a week, sometimes up to four hours a day on the mountain and two off it. The diminutive skier can clean and jerk almost her entire body weight. She says weightlifting harnesses
Broken wrist doesn’t slow Nelson skier Nelson skier Ruby Fullerton’s toughness was exemplified after breaking her wrist last month. The 12-year-old spends hours at high speed on snow, but ironically it was a leisurely afternoon spent ice-skating which saw her fracture the bone. However, it wasn’t until a week and a half later that Ruby even realised it was broken. In that time, she had been rock climbing, weightlifting and even
played tennis. After thinking it was just strained, Ruby’s physio eventually convinced her to get it x-rayed which confirmed the break, though the news didn’t phase the young skier. “It was quite funny,” Ruby says. The injury has restricted her training as she prepares to represent her country for the first time at the Whistler Cup in Canada next month. Ruby was named in the New Zealand U14 team on the back of

her performances in the National Youth Series where she was the country’s fastest 12-year-old. She is set to lose her cast this week and will throw herself back into full time training in preparation for her first international competition. “The day after it comes off, I’m going to go weightlifting.” In order to make it in the highly competitive world of professional skiing, Ruby must train at least 120 days of the year. Of course, the New Zealand seasons don’t allow for this, so she

Ruby has also taken part in two weightlifting competitions, though she was only really competing against herself. “There was no one in my weight class or age category.” She says while it can sometimes be hard to stay motivated through such a rigorous training schedule, she derives strength from her goal to be the best female skier in the country with one ultimate goal in mind: “I want to go to the Olympics.”

I
heard a story the other day that really made me think about the importance of a strong password. My sister-in-law received a message from her friend on Facebook. In the message, her friend explained that she was in
Vietnam, had been robbed and had no way to get home. She asked for money to be sent urgently via bank transfer. Fortunately, Kate knew this wasn’t true as she’d only just seen her friend a couple of days before. She realised that the message was a fake and that, somehow, her friend’s Facebook account must have been attacked. Her friend was upset when she found out but it did make her see how easy it was for someone to tap into her personal information. At CERT NZ, we hear of many situations where people have received messages on social media, supposedly from a friend or family member, asking for money. Not only is the thought of someone pretending to be you frightening, it’s also worrying that people you care about may believe what they are reading and get caught up in the scam. Locals back on board for Giants Jonty Dine In the midst of a difficult off-season which has seen them lose Finn Delaney and Mika Vukona until later in the year, the Mike Pero Nelson Giants have retained the services of five local fan favourites for the 2019 season. Giants skipper Sam Dempster has re-signed with the franchise for his twelfth season. It’s been a busy offseason for the 28-yearold sharpshooter with his recent wedding and also starting his own business. “2019 has got off to a great start for me, tying the knot and my second child on the way.” Sam says he has a great feeling about the group and the season to come. “It feels like it’s going to be a great year.” The Giants have also managed to lure Perth Wildcat Rhys Vague across the Tasman.
