A mother’s heartbreak Staff reporter

A baby boy who was born by emergency C-section last week following a serious crash on Waimea Rd has died after a fiveday battle in Wellington Hospital. The boy’s mother was 30-weeks

pregnant when a driver smashed into their car at about 6.20pm last Monday night. A 47-year-old man has been charged with careless driving causing injury and will appear in Nelson District Court today. Police say further charges are

possible as the investigation progresses. The baby was born in Nelson Hospital via emergency Caesarean following the crash and shortly after was flown to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

The mother was in a stable condition. Her partner suffered chest injuries and a broken arm while the alleged offender was trapped in his car. A police spokesperson said their sympathies were with those affected and that they were contin-

uing to investigate the crash. Police still want to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the crash. People with information are asked to contact Detective Constable Jason Fitzgerald at Nelson Police on 03 546 3840.

Computer scam targets Nelson A Nelson-based IT company is warning locals about an elaborate scam doing the rounds. Sean Doggett of the IT Department says scammers are making phone calls claiming to be from Microsoft Licencing. They then offer to send you an email with instructions for logging in and completing a Microsoft Licencing survey. “This is a phishing scam, they are trying to get Microsoft 365 usernames and passwords,” Sean says. “Our advice would be to hang up immediately.” He says that if you have inadvertently followed their instructions and entered any details online, change your Office 365 password immediately.

Nelson leading sunshine race Nelson is in the box seat to retain its sun crown a third of the way through 2018, but Marlborough is right on its heels. NIWA released monthly climate summary today which showed the wider Nelson region has

recorded 898 sun hours from January 1 to April 30. That is an average of 7.48 hours of sun per day. Marlborough recorded 896 sun hours in the same period, just two hours behind Nelson,

Nelsonians are quitting smoking in droves as the Government cracks down on cigarette packaging while ramping up the tax on tobacco. As we move hastily towards the year 2025, the Government’s goal of Smokefree NZ is looking increasingly possible. May marks the last month that cigarettes can be sold with brand marketing on them. As of June 6, all packaging will be the same; a dark brown/ green background with graphic warning images taking up 75 per cent of the packet. A small area at the bottom of the packet is allocated to have the brand name in plain font with a restricted size. I’m sure I’ve saved heaps of money and I’m a mum now so would never look back.” Initiatives such as the Fresh Air Project are gaining popularity around the region. Tax on tobacco products increased by 10 per cent on January 1, the second of four annual tax increases of the same amount. Statistics New Zealand figures puts the average price of a 25 pack of cigarettes at $35.14. In 2010 it was just $13.46. Haven Road Store owner Dharmendra Patel says that it’s unfair that tobacco users cop all the tax hikes. “You’ve got McDonald’s that makes the fatty burgers and then caffeine which is another addiction. You don’t see the government increasing their taxes by 10 per cent every year.” He says that people will still

smoke, no matter the cost. “The younger generation are vaping rather than smoking cigarettes ... but the older generation, they will keep smoking no matter what.” Nelson Marlborough Health communications officer Jane Horder says its Stop Smoking service has seen a growth from 117 referrals in the first quarter of 2017 to over 230 referrals in the first quarter of 2018. Nelson City Council communications manager Paul Shattock says council remains committed to making the entire city smokefree. Council has undertaken a trial on smokefree premises since December and 96 percent of people trialled supported the initiatve.

Museum extends photo exhibition The Nelson Provincial Museum’s latest exhibition of National Geographic photographs has had its run extended by another month due to popular demand. “The decision to extend the exhibition was an easy one to make,” says museum chief executive Lucinda Blackley-Jimson. “In our

first four weeks we had 12,500 visitors through and the numbers have continued to grow each day. It’s well on its way to becoming one of our most popular exhibitions.” This exhibition takes visitors behind the lens of some of National Geographic’s most engaging im-

No longer is a dog’s place tied up outside on the street. From hardware stores and cafes to restaurants and furniture outlets, more Nelson businesses are welcoming canines into their premises to cater to an increasing trend of dog ownership in the city. There are currently more than 16,000 registered dogs across the region - almost one dog to every five people living here. Becky Wyatt, manager at Habitat for Humanity ReStore, says she has a few regular customers with dogs. “It encourages people walking their dogs to come in a shop. It also creates a welcoming and

friendly environment – other customers love it, we’ve had great feedback.” Expressions Florist owner Rosie Seek says she believes it is a very positive move for business owners. “As an animal lover I find that I instantly have something in common with the business owner.” She says that owning her own business means she can combine the love of her industry with the love of her dog Taco. “Taco has more friends than anyone I know. I think because floristry is such an emotive industry sometimes if people come in a bit upset or grieved he can be a nice distraction or a calming influence.” New owner of Global Soaps Jody MacLeod says she

wouldn’t dream of leaving her only child, Daphne the French Bulldog, at home. “At the moment she mainly hangs out in the office because she’s only 15 months old, at this point in time I think she’d eat all the soaps within her reach.” This week Kate Donaldson and her dog Cola frequented East St Cafe, showing how much more accepted it was. Last week, Wellington and Auckland Councils made headlines around the country for allowing dogs on their public transport system. NEWS Battle for Banded Rail: A collaborative conservation project has launched in Nelson to help a struggling native bird population regenerate. Thursday was the first day of installation of the ‘Battle for the Banded Rail’ traps in the Nelson district. Banded rail are endangered, and the top of the South Island is one of their last strongholds. The project has been running for three years in the wider Tasman region and more than 600 traps in have been installed from Richmond to Mapua. Nelson City Council have provided funding for the project to run along the Great Taste Trail and Natureland have come on board offering free man power to install and monitor the traps. Celebrating nursing: International Nurses Day will be celebrated on Friday 18 May with a function at Chapel Cafe, with the funds raised to go towards training potential student nurses in third world countries. There will be music, food and guest speakers, including Jill Clendon (Acting Chief Nursing Officer, MOH) and Annette Milligan (Clinical Director for Women, Child, Youth at NMH). There will also be an auction to raise money for the Florence Nightingale Girl Child Education Fund, which supports orphaned daughters of nurses in developing countries to get back to school.

Thomas’ big transformation Jonty Dine Thomas Newton says he felt lighter and colder after he underwent a radical transformation on Saturday. The 30-year-old shaved his hair and beard to raise funds for youth group, Emerge Youth, to go to the Arise Conference in Wellington later this year. Thomas had been growing his hair for over three years. “I kind of got told I was doing

Tom and Kelsey Bate from Emerge Youth Group convinced Thomas in February to lose his luscious locks as a fundraising campaign to take a group of 50 youths to the Christian conference. Thomas says, while he will

miss the beard, he is looking forward to again having no food restrictions. “I’ll be able to drink soups again and not carry around a massive pile of napkins.” In total, Thomas raised $1664.50 through his campaign. “I said I wouldn’t do it for less than $1500.” Money raised will be put towards travel and accommodation costs for the Wellington trip.

Thomas’ hairy appearance meant he was called a few names including Jesus, Moses and Santa. He was even recruited as a homeless man for an advertisement. “Speedy Print needed someone who looked homeless to hold a sign and I also got cast as the beggar in Fiddler and the Roof.” The 2018 Arise Conference will take place from July 19-21 July at the TSB Arena in Wellington.

Global Soap makers pass the bubbles Charles Anderson After 21 years of making soap by hand, the family duo behind Nelson-based Global Soap have sold up shop. Sisters-in-law Ing Marie and Bronwyn Shalcrass began the company at home with no running water and children running amok. They knew nothing about making soap – making it from a recipe book. “But our aim was always to ex-

pand,” Ing Marie says. “We just wanted to create something that people would like to use.” And they did. The company now has its well-known store on Nile St as well as selling at markets around the country, and around the world through its website. “We have always loved what we did, right from the start,” says Bronwyn. “We wanted to make something affordable that families would use.” It won several business awards

over the years and led the team to create bespoke soaps for other companies as well. But it has always been done from Nelson. Bronwyn says they just figured out they made and sold their one millionth bar of soap. “We are just a small business so we did the whole thing.” They also involved the whole family with husbands and children. But they always said when they turned 50 they would have a rethink. “We had a plan,” says

Ing Marie. “We still love coming to work but we want to do other things and slow down.” So last week they had a party to say goodbye to Global Soap. But they have already passed the reigns to David Mitchell and his partner Jody McLeod, who relocated from Auckland to takeover. David first bumped into Ing Marie’s husband Tony 10 years ago. Back then he knew of the business and told Tony that if ever they wanted to sell then to get

in touch. Recently Tony did just that. “It’s fabulous product and it’s part of the community,” says David, who has given up a previous career in corporate recruitment for his own lifestyle change. Jody, a former IT project manager says that the move just felt right and that Ing Marie and Bronwyn are helping them transition from the city life to the soap life. “We will put our personal stamp on it at some stage but right now it’s a recipe that not broke.”

Nurses set to march in Nelson Nurse Florence is holding an international nurse day march this Saturday, 12 May, up Trafalgar St. “We urge every nurse, every health professional, every patient and every member of the public to join us in taking a stand for public, health and health workers,” says organiser Maria Briggs. Restaurants offer half price meal for early diners Charles Anderson A company that allows restaurants to offer half price meals to early bird customers has launched in Nelson. First Table started in Queenstown more than three years ago and is now based in cities across New Zealand, Australia, the UK. Now it has also begun to offer its service in Nelson. “The idea is that we want to encourage people to dine out

more often and explore more restaurants,” says First Table’s regional manager Cameron Steele. He says the concept is that restaurants offer up their “first table” for the night to one group of two-four people who pay $10 and can then get their meal half price. “It’s a good platform for people to broaden their horizons and it takes away the risk for people who are trying something

new,” says Cameron. He says it also allows restaurants or cafes a good way to get patronage in what is traditionally a fairly quiet time for customers. There are only a handful of restaurants on there at the moment but Cameron says that will soon expand. No boundaries for counselling service Kate Russell A free counselling service in Victory is breaking down barriers and proving that it’s not hard to get help. The Victory Community Centre is celebrating the addition of a designated counselling room, due to being “inundated” with people in need. The room was officially opened and blessed yesterday, with the centre’s community nurse Rachel Thomas saying it has been a “longstanding goal” of the team of six councillors. “The centre has provided a counselling service since it opened and we’ve been making do with whatever space is available in the centre for some time, so it’s exciting we finally have a room,” she says. “It’s a peaceful environment with nice furniture and things on the wall.” In the last four months alone, the service has provided 110 counselling hours to clients, and Rachel says that number continues to climb. “The need is always growing. I’ve seen an increase in hardship and

more complex situations which have definitely put a strain on our services. “A lot of people come to us in crisis, we see a huge range of situations, ages and stages and we just want to tell people they are not alone.” Rachel says people are able to selfrefer themselves to the centre or come through an agency. “People are put in contact with a councillor within 48 hours and they get six to 10 sessions, which can be held in the mornings or evenings - there is quite a lot of flexibility.” As well as experienced councillors, the service also supports third-year NMIT students to reach the practical hours they require for their professional body. Rachel says she wants to get the word out to those who do not know about the services and may be in need. “There can be a perception that counselling is expensive, but we’re a completely free service in a familiar environment.” The Victory Community Centre counselling service is free to the wider Victory community, to find out more, call 546 8389.

In June 1987 a group of weavers took on the lease at 280 Trafalgar St to sell their homemade wares but after 30 years of great yarns, the iconic Fibre Spectrum is shutting up shop. The fibre-arts co-operative have cited rising rates, insurances and rents as the main factors in their decision to close, and their last

day of trade will be this Saturday, May 12. “It’s been in the wind for a while,” says one of the eight current members, Sue Broad. “Despite many discussions to find an alternative solution, it is simply not feasible to keep operating. We have a loyal following of both local and overseas buyers, so it is with immense regret that the decision has been made.” The co-op was originally founded after a group of young woman

completed a weaving course at the Nelson Polytechnic, and some of the original members are still the group. Sue says they have been inundated with messages of shock, sadness and support. “It’s like a death. People are asking us if we’ll relocate, and while it could be an option in the future, some things just have a finite life,” she says. “There won’t be anything else like this in Nelson now. We’re the only

outlet that sells locally-made, unique fibre works.” Although the shop is closing, the group of avid hand-weavers, felters, hand-spinners and knitters say they will still retain the ‘tools of their trade’ and produce their items to order through their website. But the work of non-members, or work that is sold on commission on behalf of other artisans in the region, will no longer be sold. “It’s a generation, and truly the

end of an era – Fibre Spectrum has been an icon for Nelson textile artisans,” says Sue. “But as they say - as one door closes, another one opens.” Fibre Spectrum will remain open for the rest of this week, 9am-5pm weekdays and 9:30am – 2:30pm Saturday, selling the various work of the members at a reduced price. We promised to extend the free visits to under 13s from 1 July 2015 and did so. Last year in May, National promised to further extend the policy so as to reduce the cost to $18 for adults from 1 July 2018.

Nelson Matters The Government made a terrible mistake last week in announcing that it would not be honouring its promise on doctor’s visit costs on 1 July 2018. It is bad news for families but it is also cancerous to trust in the electoral process. Politics became toxic in New Zealand in the 1980s over Labour selling public assets against its word and in the 1990s over National reversing its policy on the surtax. The last two governments of Helen Clark and John Key were very careful about what they promised and ensuring they

bour’s Housing Minister breaking the commitment. The problem here is that Labour way over promised and made extravagant promises they cannot now meet. Budget 2018 is shaping up as one of broken promises. The effect on Nelson will be fewer police and higher doctor’s costs than Labour promised. Nelsonians will be paying more to fuel up the family car. Labour is playing with fire. New Zealanders have historically punished Government’s harshly for breaking their word. Advt.

Baydon's battle He's almost died twice, isn't expected to make his 30th birthday but Baydon Brown tells reporter Jonty Dine that he is determined to see as much as he can. All Baydon Brown wants to do is spend time with his family. He may be only 27-years-old but he has almost died twice and isn’t meant to make it to his 30th birthday. Baydon was born with cystic fibrosis which particularly affects the lungs and pancreas, clogging them with thick mucus. But then, in 2013, he also noticed something else was wrong. “I had a really sore testicle, I’d done a lot of motorbike riding and thought it might have something to do with that, but I went to the doctor and he said it was all good.” Not long after, Baydon made one of his many routine trips to

Christchurch Hospital for his cystic fybrosis. “They did ultrasound on it and it came back that I have testicular cancer and four days later I was having surgery.” Baydon’s right testicle was removed and the Brown family was relieved to learn he was cancerfree. That was until last year. He was not feeling right so they got him in for a full body CT scan. The cancer was back. Baydon was told he had lymphoma. “I sort of knew it was back, I was just feeling really sick.” Baydon underwent four rounds of chemo in 2017. “After that they said that it could be all clear, but then around New

Year’s it came back.” Combined with his cystic fibrosis the chemo can cause shortness of breath, a chronic cough and repeated chest infections. His pre-existing condition meant the treatment could kill him faster than the cancer. “It was torture really,” he says. “I had fevers and couldn’t breathe properly, I only had one round and had to stop because I almost died twice.” He says one round was enough to know he could not endure anymore. But without chemo, he has few options. “They will just keep monitoring me, it’s just going to get worse and worse and then I’m not too sure,

they don’t really know but said maybe two or three years.” The Brown family have a trip to Australia planned for June where they will go to the theme parks on the Gold Coast. “I’ve sold a couple of my cars, so I’ve got a bit of money to do a few things and the GiveaLittle money has been a huge help.” While Baydon tries to keep positive towards his situation, he says he does have his dark days. “I had a bit of a rough patch recently, I guess I just hadn’t taken it all in properly and it just hit me, but I’m alright now I’ve come out of it.” Baydon is not currently taking any medication for his cancer.

Other than the occasional pain killer, he is just trying to eat well and keep active. Baydon says he has had amazing support from hospital staff in particular Robyn Beach who has been a huge source of strength for him. Baydon says he doesn’t have anything he really wants to do on his bucket list but will continue to spend as much time as he can with friends and family. Students rock out at Theatre Royal When Brooklyn Scott heard organisers announce the second place solo act in the Smokefreerockquest Nelson heats she thought she had lost out. Little did the Garin College student know that she had actually come first. “I was really surprised,” says the 14-year-old. "I think my diction was clear and I talked to the audience to give them a sense of who I am – that might have helped to impress the judge.” Live music, original songs, selfies and first-time nerves – it was all part of the mix at the Theatre Royal at this year’s Smokefreerockquest Nelson heats. On Saturday, 12 Nelson and Marlborough bands were selected to take part in the regional finals, also at the Theatre Royal on May 18. Event director Glenn Common says while Smokefreerockquest is a competition, the environment at the heats is very supportive and the emphasis is on participation. Nutcracker in Nelson Kate Russell The ‘jewel’ of classical ballet will be lighting up the Theatre Royal stage this weekend. Moscow Ballet ‘La Classique is performing The Nutcracker - Tchaikovsky's ageless tale of bravery and dreams – for two shows this Saturday. Staff reporter With 1500 attendees at 42 shows across two venues in 10 days, the Nelson Fringe Festival has proven its value to the community and artists, say organisers. Festival director Laura Irish says the goal of the event was to create a space that brought people together. “Because this festival, at its core, is simply a collection of people celebrating life through the means of art.” She says there were 13 shows and two workshops that were sold out and over 1,500 attendees over two venues. “Thank you to the audiences of Nelson who took a chance.” Christchurch-based performer Logan Kitney says that it was the “greatest little festival the world has to offer”. “I have never felt so accommodated and well looked after as a performer in my life. Nelson Fringe you have done your beautiful city proud.” However, it was also a great incubator for local performers. Despite having artists from all over the country and the world, for the second year in a row the “Best in Fringe Award” has gone to a local show. Local director Giles Burton’s ‘The Man Who Was Thursday’ came away with that award, as well as best solo show. Ten-year-old Hampden Street School student Elijah Scowcroft also won “The Spirit of the Fringe Award” for his partially improvised adaptation of the family movie ‘Home Alone’. The 2018 Nelson Fringe Festival is funded by Creative New Zealand and the Rata Foundation with the support of local business. Festival marketing manager Stu Dalton says the event would not be able to go ahead without funding but also the support of the local community. “We’re so thankful that the community really embraces the festival and is so supportive. Nelson College kicked off its 2018 rugby campaign on Saturday with a big win thanks in part to a stunning performance from its skipper – a 16 year-old German who only took up the game a few years ago. The current Moascar Cup holders ran in seven tries, including two hat-tricks, to see off a strong challenge from St Andrews College from Christchurch and claim an impressive 25-point victory in the opening round of the UC Championship at Nelson College. With the scores locked up 12-12 at half time, Nelson ran riot in the second, running in five unanswered tries. Nelson skipper Anton Seg-

ner scored a hat-trick for the hosts from the openside flank, an effort that saw him awarded Sky Sports man of the match for the televised game. But rugby wasn’t Anton’s first sport of choice. Like most young Germans, Anton was kicking a football as soon as he could walk. “I played soccer for seven years because it just dominates, it’s like rugby in New Zealand, there is a football pitch on every corner.” Anton says he was always ‘big and solid’ for his age. “I had a couple of English friends who said I should try rugby, so I tried out at the local club in Frankfurt two weeks before the German Championships.” Less than two weeks after picking up the oval ball, Anton was a national champion as Frankfurt went on

to win the tournament. As a big All Blacks fan he was keen to move to New Zealand to further his rugby education, although he says he had to adapt to the significant differences between the Kiwi and German game. “The rugby in New Zealand is obviously way more physical with more island boys playing and the pace and skill level is much higher.” He says Saturday’s performance is one he hopes to replicate throughout the season. “I like to lead by example, I want to be a good role model for my teammates and also the students in the school. “Although I captained in Germany, it’s obviously a

huge step up to captain a first XV, I’m very grateful and excited,” Anton says. Anton says he hopes to make the junior Knights team to play the Chiefs later this year after he made the wider training squad in 2017 but was cut from the final side. FOOTBALL: Marlborough's Rangers AFC has continued its early dominance in the Nelson Bays Football first division, sweeping past Nelson Suburbs 6-0 at Saxton Field on Saturday. The win sees Rangers firmly at the top of the table. In other results, FC Nelson beat Nelson College 3-2, while Tahuna FC and Richmond Athletic fought out a 3-3 draw. Standings are: Rangers AFC 12 points; FC Nelson 9 points; Nelson College 7 points; Nelson Suburbs 7 points; Tahuna FC 4 points; Richmond Athletic 3 points. In the Mainland Football League, Nelson Suburbs went down 2-1 to Nomads in Christchurch, Jimmy Deehan getting on the score-sheet for Suburbs. MOTOR RACING: Nelson driver Ben Hunt notched up his second consecutive runner-up position at the ENEOS International Rally of Whangarei on Sunday. Racing his Subaru WRX STi with co-driver Tony Rawstorn, Hunt again finished behind Kiwi WRC star Hayden Paddon but managed to lessen the gap by a minute compared to the previous event. The 2015 NZRC champion also extended out his points break on the rest of the field, to sit 27 points ahead of Emma Gilmour and Matt Summerfield who are tied for third place. Paddon holds 18 points over Hunt but his international schedule only allows him to contest five of the six NZRC events.

High flyers Jonty Dine The Mike Pero Nelson Giants secured their second win of the New Zealand NBL season on Saturday, edging a spirited Southland Sharks side 103-100. Kyle Adnam put the Giants on the board with a layup, but it was the side from Southland making all the early play. The shots simply wouldnâ€™t fall for the Giants as they did in their opening encounter. However, when Bronson Beri sunk the home side's first three-

pointer of the night, it signalled a turning of the tide for the Giants. Nelson found their fluency and took a 46-39 lead at half time, increasing their shooting percentage to 42. But the Southlanders refused to go away, clawing back in the third to be down by just one at three-quarter-time, 69-68. It was a tense final five minutes for the Giants faithful, the home side clinging on to a twopoint advantage with a minute on the clock.

Giants coach Jamie Pearlman called a time out with 23 seconds left and the scores at 101100. The hosts held their nerve to claim their second win of the season 103 -100. Finn Delany ended the match with 25 points and nine rebounds. He says it was great to back up the round one win. "It was tense, and they may have scored 100 points, but I think we played really well defensively, we picked off a lot

of rebounds and will take a lot of confidence into the game against the Rams." Kyle Adnam was awarded man of the match, top scoring for the Giants with 32 points. The win takes the Giants to second on the NBL table, sitting two points behind the Hawkeâ€™s Bay Hawks with a game in hand. The Giants will return to Trafalgar on May 19 to face the Canterbury Rams.

Three generations on the netball court Jonty Dine For the past four seasons, the Thornalley family have had three generations represented on the netball court. The Nelson netball stalwarts boast a trio of a grandmother, daughter and granddaughter. This includes Judy Totoro, who at 69, is Nelson’s oldest netballer. Judy is a goal keep for Rival grade four, has been involved in Nelson netball for more than forty years and the club captain for the past twenty. “I don’t know if it’s because my mother is stubborn and just doesn’t want to give it up, but she just loves it,” daughter Kathleen Thornalley says. She says her mother surrounds herself with younger players so it’s not just a ‘team of old ladies.’ “They compete very well, I have encouraged her to hand over the reins as club captain, so she doesn’t have to do all the organisation at the club, but she is always the first one to put her hand up, she is very giving like that.” She says her mother’s competitive spirit is a strong as ever. “She just loves the social aspect

and is still fiercely competitive, she certainly won’t give an inch to her opposition.” Kathleen started playing premier netball at 17 and is still going strong. Now 45, the Richmond goal shoot has also been club captain for the past 15 years. As she has said for the past several seasons, she is trying to retire, but “it just wasn’t on the cards this year.” “Everyone says I’ll be just like mum still playing at 70 but I don’t think I will.” Completing

the family dynasty is 12-yearold Lily Thornelley. The Broadgreen Intermediate student started her playing career as an 8-year-old. “She loves it and has followed on the family pattern.” Kathleen says there have been lots of cases of three generations being involved in netball but its quite rare to find them all playing at the same time. “We are incredibly passionate about netball, we love the camaraderie we share with our clubs and teammates, we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Kathleen says.

Tight finish in women's duathlon Peter Gibbs Luke Clatworthy led from the start and went on to win the long event of seven stages in the Shoe Clinic Brooks Duathlon at Conifer Park, Rabbit Island on Sunday. In a mass start, competitors in three different distances started together, 15-year-old Luke leading the way from his brothers, 13-year-old twins Adam and Joseph. It was a mixed bunch, with all abilities and ages from the young teenagers to 70-yearold Rod Sharp. With an undulating run course of 1800m and a 6km bike circuit, competitors started together for the first run, but then chose to complete three, five or seven stages alternating between run and bike. While Luke Clatworthy opened up a good lead in the opening run, Matt Newberry, Glenn Bathgate and Stu Hodgkiss worked together on the bike section to limit the damage. In the five-stage race, Rod Harrhy pegged back Adam Clatworthy's early lead to win by just over a minute, with Karen Price working through the field to win the women's section from Serena Hobson. Although Luke Clatworthy's lead was never threatened,

competition was tight for the minor places in the long race. At the finish it was Newberry from Bathgate and Hodgkiss, with Wayne Leighton and Glenn Lilley taking the next two spots in a sprint finish. Harris held off Coltman to win the women's section, with Cooper staying ahead of upand-coming teen Florence McNabb for the next spots. Marist sent shock waves through NPD Tasman Trophy competition on Saturday after upsetting Nelson 20-17 at Neale Park. The loss sees Waimea Old Boys leapfrog Nelson to the top of the table, after their fourth win of the season. After three comfortable victories, the unbeaten Nelson faced their toughest task to date as they met Marist in what was a see-sawing slug-fest. The visitors opened the scoring through the boot of Taine Robinson as both teams played cautious footy in the early exchanges. Willy Havili continued his stellar season, slicing through untouched and converting his own try to take a 7-3 lead soon after. Nelson crossed again before the break to take a 12-3 lead at half time. Marist started strongly in the second, Isaac Laga streaking down the left-hand flank to bring his side within four. In a reversal of fortunes, Marist had all the share of territory in the second half as they hammered away at the Nelson defence. The green machine soon hit the front after replacement Cleve Barrell carried three Nelson defenders over the line. Momentum once again shifted,

and Nelsonâ€™s forwards started to impose themselves on a tiring Marist defence, Kershaw SykesMartin barging his way over from close range to put his side back in front, to the relief of the home fans. However, another twist was to follow soon after. After a sustained period of attack, Marist again reclaimed the lead after centre Liam Boshoff scored under the posts to put his side ahead 20-17 with just over five to play. Marist managed to retain possession in the final minute and hold on to cause the first major upset of the season. Marist captain Tyler says the win proved that they can beat anyone on their day. "We are ecstatic, the boys are pumped after that." Nelson coach Kade Heke says he was disappointed with the loss. "Marist just didn't let us settle and we didn't really fire a shot today." In other results, Waimea Old Boys remain the only unbeaten side in the Nelson sub union competition after beating Wanderers 25-8 at Brightwater. Stoke registered their second win of the season, defeating Kahurangi 29-19 at Greenmeadows. Sea Perch: They don’t grow big and the head makes up most of the fish, but the fillets are great eating. As with tarakihi and mullet, the abdominal lining is black but it peels off easily. Spotties and other wrasses: Their hard scales, spikes, and slipperiness make them a pain to fillet, but if you are curious or want to honor your kid’s catch give it a try, the meat is very nice with a mild taste. Octopus: Ok, technically not a fish, and definitely not everybody’s cup of tea, but with a bit of knowledge, they make great eating, they are much sought after in most other parts of the world for a reason! First, how to kill them; make a large cut between the eyes and turn them inside out. You know you have hit the right spot when they turn white and go limp (well, sort of,

the tentacles have a fair bit of life on their own, even when cut off.) Remove the guts, put it on ice and take it home. Take a big pot, put in a tablespoon of olive oil and fry the octopus. It will leak enough water to cook it in it. Put a lid on it and let it boil for an hour or so. Let it cool, strip off the skin (but keep the suckers) and prepare it any way you like. I prefer marinating the pieces in lemon juice, garlic, olive oil and Italian herbs. Finally, a few fish I tend to stay away from: Red Cod: I know you can buy the fillets in the shop and that many people eat them but I’ve never had good luck when I kept one.Very skinny, riddled with worms and mushy meat, maybe other parts of the country produce better quality fish? Barracouta: Apparently they have really tasty meat and the South Africans (they call it snoek) love it but they are so full of worms here that I could never get myself to try one, I only use them as bait.

The fifth annual Festival of Golf saw hundreds of golfers hit the links in Nelson last week. The festival included tournaments at Nelson, Motueka and Greenacres Golf Clubs. Tournament committee member Jeane Drysdale says the event has become a highlight on many golfers' calendars. “We have 38 clubs represented from Otago to Auckland and everywhere in-between,” she says. Jeane says the tournament is geared toward retirees and couples. The 120 players ranged from 30 to 70 -years-old. Dr (John) Roger Quietly slipped away on April 25, 2018, aged 88. Beloved husband of Gwen, Daughters Naomi, Hanna, and Melissa, Grandchildren Ben, Fifi, Isobel and Theo, and his Son-in-laws Ron, Doug and David. The family wishes to thank the wonderful and compassionate staff at Flaxmore who made the last year of his life comfortable. Roger wished for a natural burial and this took place at Marsden Valley Cemetery, Nelson, on Friday April 27, followed by a reception at 29 Bronte St. May the long-time sun shine upon you Roger, RIP.
