Boaties rescued after 11 hours Andrew Board Editor

Two men spent 11 hours sitting on their capsized boat singing songs to keep their spirits up, before being rescued by the Nelson Coastguard on Saturday

night. The men were reported to be late from a fishing trip, by a friend of the pair, on Saturday evening. Nelson Coastguard president Wayne Harrison says volunteers were on the water at 6pm and began searching near Pepin Island at about 7.30pm. The men were

found at around 10pm, 11 hours after their boat was “swamped” by a big wave. “They were ok,” says Wayne. “They said they were glad we turned up when we did. They had run out of songs to sing and it was absolutely chucking it down.” He says the men were wearing

their lifejackets but it was their friend giving rescuers good information on where they might be that saved their lives. “We need to give a shout out to that guy. It was really good information we were getting.” One of the men was mildly hypothermic, he was treated on

site and brought back to Nelson. Wayne says the group train twice a week for that exact situation. “When it turns out like that it makes you feel really good.” Nelson Surf Lifesavers also helped in the rescue. “It was a great team effort,” says Wayne.

centre hosted an event inviting people to bring in clothes they no longer wanted and swap them out with clothes brought by other people, refreshing their wardrobes without spending a cent. Among those hunting for a new wardrobe was local cancer survivor and single mother Anna Burns. Anna was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, just two weeks after her brother discovered he had widespread melanoma. “It’s like I’m still waiting to wake up from this dream where I had cancer and my brother died,” says Anna. “My diagnosis initially wasn’t great at all and it’s been pretty rough, my eyesight is worse, my memory hasn’t come back and my teeth are falling out, but I’m here.”

Anna had her last treatment in March 2016, is waiting on a reconstruction, and received a No Evidence Discovered diagnosis, but says the process has had a big effect on her body. “You’d be amazed how much you swell up with chemotherapy, I put on 12kg so I had no clothes left that fit me and a whole wardrobe of stuff that I wasn’t wearing.” Anna brought in 28 items, including a whole bunch of jeans, shoes and evening dresses. “This is amazing, it’s great to see stuff being reused and I’ve managed to completely replenish my wardrobe.” Anna says she is a bit of an environmentalist and, after studying textile and fashion design, loves the idea of clothes being reused rather than just ending up in landfills. “It’s a great initiative and it com-

pletely takes away the stigma of stinky, old lady, second-hand clothes, I’m amazed at the quality of the clothes here, there are designer labels with the tags still on.” Anna says the one thing she hopes someone loves is the dress she wore to the Cancer Society Ball. “At the time I didn’t get the memo that the rich, successful people who were there only wear black so I waltzed in wearing this powder blue sparkly dress with my pop star wig and looking a bit bigger than the dress allowed, looking like a complete idiot, like I’d gotten lost from a wedding. “It was such a bad decision, but it is a beautiful, well-made dress and I really hope it gets taken because it will look beautiful on someone, just not me.” Fashion Revolution volunteer and Tahunanui Community

Centre worker Katie Hughes says seeing so many people leaving with arms laden with clothes was really great. “I was blown away by how many people came, and were excited and enthused about swapping their clothes and going home with a new wardrobe. “I have no idea how many garments came through the door, people brought in around twenty garments each but we had one lady who brought in a suitcase absolutely packed with 77 items. The remaining clothes have been donated to the Richmond Red Cross Shop, and SaveMart’s cotton recycling programme. Katie says the event was such a success that they will be running another one on July 8. “It’s what the community centre is about helping people survive in today’s climate and, at the same time, supporting the environment.”

A large-scale military exercise will see more than 2000 military personnel from 16 countries descend on the Top of the South at the end of the year. The New Zealand Defence Force is planning the exercise, Southern Katipo, for the end of October around the Marlborough, Kaikoura, Tasman, Nelson and Buller Regions. It is New Zealand’s largest military exercise and is held every two years in varying parts of the country. There will be groups of personnel participating from Australia, Canada, United States of America, France and Britain. Soldiers from Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Brunei, Malaysia and Timor Leste will also be taking an active part in the exercise. In the scenario, which is a continuation from the 2015 exercise held in Buller, Tasman and Marlborough districts, a fictitious South West Pacific island is separated into two nations called Becara and Alpira. Nelson’s Victory Boxing is tackling depression head in a bid to “break down the barriers” of mental illness. Highly-acclaimed actor and playwright Rob Mokaraka, will perform his one-man show Shot Bro, Confessions of a Depressed Bullet next weekend at the Vanguard St gym, over three shows. It has been described as a “black comedy about a very real fight with depression” which is inspired by true events. Mokaraka had undiagnosed depression and in 2009 he approached armed police with a meat cleaver in an attempted suicide in Auckland. The play is the product of his seven-year journey of healing and self-discovery in a bid to reach others and to recognise depression as a common problem that can be relieved. Victory Boxing founder and director Paul Hampton says it’s a fitting show for the popular gym. “There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t get into a discussion with someone at the gym who’s in a rut, and sometimes after a workout when they have the blood pumping, people often open up about how they are feeling,” he says.

“That’s the thing about mental health - it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re at in life, depression can affect anyone.” Paul says he met Rob through a family member and has always wanted to see the play. “I was out for a walk one morning and thought, why not just get him to bring it to Nelson. We managed to lock it in, had a meeting with the council to share some ideas, who we were lucky enough to get on board to help, as well as Nelson Bays Primary Health. “The other side of it too, is that Rob knows all about the gym, and when we were talking about different venues we could use – he suggested doing it at Victory Boxing, so he’ll be doing it from the ring.” Paul says the three shows are already starting to fill up. “It’s a koha entry, which makes it really accessible, and after each show we are going to have some kai available in the gym’s common room and people can talk, share stories and there will also be contacts for people who need it.” Shot Bro, Confessions of a Depressed Bullet is on Saturday 13 May, at 6pm with another two shows on Sunday 14 May, at 1:30pm and 6pm, at Victory Boxing. Fringe takes centre stage

The third Fringe Festival is hitting Nelson this week so the Nelson Weekly’s Brittany Spencer went along to one of the shows to get a taste of what the next six days will be all about. Kicking off on April 29, the Fringe Festival has already hosted three workshops at the Nelson Musical Theatre and 10 shows at the Refinery Artspace. One of which was Australian magician, Bodane Hatten’s ‘A Sleightly Funny Magic Show’ which featured a slew of card tricks, a lot of audience participation, and the potential for bodily harm. Audience member Katie Pascoe says she loved Bodane’s show. “I don’t know how he did it, he was very entertaining and brilliant to

watch.” Like many others, Katie also attended a show on Sunday and has several acts lined up to watch later on this week. Another member of the audience, Davy Jones, says Hatten was vaguely abusive, which he enjoyed. “It was outrageously good actually, I love spoof magic.” Davy went to the Fringe Festival last year and says he loved it. “You never know what you are going to get, so you take a punt and you’ll be surprised

I saw this Wild Woman show last year and it was fantastic, really challenging and really great.” Actor, improviser and musician Linda Calgaro was also in the audience and says Hatten’s cheeky performance was a great way to kick off the festival. “I’m absolutely excited about this year’s festival and all the acts involved,” says Linda. “I did the Fringe Festival last year when I was based in Sydney and I loved the

festival and the people I was working with so much that I decided to shift to Nelson.” With almost five times more shows and workshops than the first festival, organiser Laura Irish says this year’s festival combines local and international talent in edgy, experimental, and all original shows. “It’s been awesome so far and the response from the community has been great, so far we’ve sold 1200 tickets and sold out nine shows. “Before we started Fringe there was nothing like this in Nelson, so now we’re seeing more and more local artists emerging than we did before, there just wasn’t that culture but we’re creating that and it is very exciting.” Shows and workshops will be running until May 7, with the programme and booking available online at nelsonfringe.co.nz

The International Day of the Midwife will be celebrated in Nelson this Friday, May 5th. The ‘We love midwives morning tea’ will be held on The Broads field, in front of Nelson Hospital, from 11am – 1pm. It is being organised by Nelson Playcentres, and is a spinoff of the celebration to be held on Parliament lawn which is aiming to promote better working conditions for New Zealand midwives. The event is open to everyone, and people are encouraged to bring their children, some kai, and even some signs if they want. Vehicles fill Founders for Hospice fundraiser

Brittany Spencer Around 200 vehicles of all shapes and sizes were sprawled across the grounds at Founder’s Heritage Park for the Nelson Hospice Vehicle Display on Sunday. Everything was out on show, from muscle cars, motorbikes, and a Ferrari supplied by Houston Motors, to a Reliant Robin and a six-wheel argo. Featuring vehicles from Blenheim to Takaka, the display, which was a fundraiser for the Nelson Tasman Hospice, drew a crowd of more than 750 people. Among the vehicles was a bright orange 1970 Pontiac LeMans, restored from the chassis up, by local mechanic Spot Christoffersen and his daughter Lee. Spot started restoring the car in 2005, and after a year away working in Antartica, he finished it in 2011. "It came out of a scrapyard in America and it was basically a full rebuild," says Spot. "Every little piece of the car was pulled apart, fixed, rustkilled, painted and put back

Lee says she loved working on the car with her dad. "I was daddy’s little girl and I used to follow him around the garage and always wanted to help him tinker away." The pair are currently restoring a 1969 Pontiac GTO in preparation for Lee’s wedding next year. "There’s a shell and he can get it

on and off the truck, but that's about it at the moment," says Lee. "It's still being put together, done up, and getting all the bits that it needs, so hopefully we’ll have it on the road in time." Event organiser and Nelson Tasman Hospice Volunteer Dave Ferry says they had so many people like Spot and Lee that were really passionate about their vehicles. The event managed to raise just over $5000 for the Nelson Tasman Hospice, and already Dave is planning another display day on January 14.

Helicopter rescues mountain biker A mountain biker had to be winched into the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter after injuring himself along the Old Ghost Road trail on Anzac Day. The 55-year-old man from Timaru suffered a hip injury at around 11.30am whilst riding the trail with a group of other riders. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter duty pilot Barry McAuliffe says because the group had a GPS beacon, the crew were able to fly straight there and find them instantly. “We got the call about 11.50pm after they activated the beacon, and we got there about 12.30pm.” The man was flown to Nelson Hospital. Barry says that while Old Ghost Road is “pretty isolated”, the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter is not called to that area frequently. “We did 530 missions last year, around 30 of them were mountain bikers and probably, about six or eight of those were on the Ghost Road.”

Crash 'could have killed' Simon Bloomberg

Three people could easily have been killed in a crash on the Coastal Highway on Friday when a truck and trailer lost control after swerving to avoid a head-on collision and careering towards on-coming traffic on a blind corner. Instead, everyone walked away after the truck driver "did a magnificent job" and the two car drivers reacted quickly, taking evasive action to miraculously miss the the truck and its trailer which flipped and skidded across the road. Truck driver Gerard Bruning says he's "just thankful everyone is safe" after the three-way near miss. "I'm so glad no one was injured. Someone must have been looking after us." Gerard, who drives for Thomas Brothers, says he swerved to avoid an on-coming truck that had allegedly crossed the centre line to drive around a tractor mowing the roadside grass. "I thought it was going to be all over, I really did. I knew the trailer had gone and I felt the

truck going too, and I thought this is it. "The wheels were at least a metre off the ground but it came down and then there was a whole heap of traffic in front of me. There was a vehicle that shot of up the bank - he was lucky because I was across the road. "When I came to a stop, I got out to make sure everyone was alright and then I got back in the truck and dragged the trailer off the road. It was unbelievable - it could have been a whole pile up." "He wasn't going fast and did really well to get out of the way, but his truck hit the bank and the wheels lifted up and the trailer tipped over. "The truck veered out towards us and I knew I had to get off the road, so I shot up the bank. Everyone was so lucky." The Coastal Highway was closed to one lane and police diverted traffic onto the Moutere Highway while the road was cleared.

Freedom camping will be banned in Nelson city this summer, if councillors greenlight its freedom camping bylaw this week. The ban would include all vehicles that are not self-contained with their own cooking and toilet facilities. Those that are self-contained campers will have limited access to city car parks. The issue will be discussed at this Thursday’s full council

meeting, where councillors will either vote yes or no to a list of areas where freedom camping should be restricted or prohibited. This will form the basis for public consultation on a draft bylaw, which if approved, could cost $80,000 to enforce. It would allow up to 20 selfcontained campers in each of Buxton, Wakatu and Montgomery carparks, with restricted hours and specific

campervan spaces. The council decided on March 23 that a bylaw would be the most appropriate way to manage freedom camping in the city, and then proceeded to discuss the areas where freedom camping should be restricted or prohibited at a workshop on April 4. Consultation will take place on the draft bylaw to determine its final form and it is proposed the bylaw would come into force on November 30.

Kids take on quiz for chance to compete in Canada What’s the name of the Wimpy Kid’s spoiled little brother? Where in Greece did the gods reside? What was the name of Bilbo’s home? These are just a sample of the questions that the region’s expert readers can expect to be asked at the Nelson/ Marlborough Kids’ Lit Quiz heat this Friday. The Kids’ Lit Quiz is an annual international literature quiz for students aged 10-13 years, with the goal of encouraging children to read more, and widely. More than 112 students from 15 schools will compete in the Nelson/Marlborough heat for one place in the national final, to be held in Wellington on May 28. There they will compete for a place in the World Final in Canada in June. The Kids’ Lit Quiz was founded in New Zealand 27 years ago by quizmaster Wayne Mills, and is now held in 11 counties including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, United Kington and USA. More than 2000 New Zealand students, in teams of four, will this year take part in the event in 15 heats across the country. Wayne says the event is unique in the Englishspeaking world, and the Nelson heat is an opportunity for avid readers in the region to receive recognition. “I call it the ‘sport of reading’, as it has a competitive edge and provides voracious readers with a chance to shine,” says Wayne, who is a former senior lecturer at the University of Auckland in the Faculty of Education. Seniornet faces battle to survive, Tuesday, April 18: Seniornet says their article in the Nelson Weekly had an amazing effect with the organisation receiving over 77 new paid-up members which “far exceeded our expectations.” After a massive drop in funding from the Tertiary Education Commission, the organisation desperately needed more members in order to stay open.

The Nelson City Brass Band is in line for a promotion after successfully defending its C Grade title at the New Zealand Brass Band Championships in Wellington. The band convincingly won the Hymn, Set Test and Own Choice Test sections, to win the C Grade aggregate by 12.5 points at the April 22 competition. It is the second consecutive year the band has won the title and now band secretary and baritone player Wayne Jennens says they'll almost certainly be invited to step up to the B grade competition next year. "Last year we won and got invited to go up to B grade, but we declined because we wanted another year to consolidate and try and show it wasn't a fluke," Wayne says. "Now we know it wasn't a fluke so there's a very good possibility that we'll go up a grade." Wayne says that defending their title was harder than winning last year because there was so much more expectation from everyone. The band practised

Although everyone hit the right notes in Wellington, Wayne says the band's musical director Nigel Weeks was also instrumental in the win. The Nayland College music teacher "got the music out of the music" as he conducted the 30-player band. "A lot of it was down to our musical director. We have to play the notes on the page but he's the one who has to shape the music." Wayne says the band also secured some individual honours with

Logan Ford winning the Junior Cornet solo and Zane Maxwell finishing fourth in the Open Euphonium solo. The band already has Nigel, Steve and Alice Rudhall and John McGough in the National Band of New Zealand, which is heading to the Netherlands to take part in the Brass Band World Championships in July. Wayne says the only sad note for the band was that its oldest member, 97-year-old Maurice Abrahams, was unable to attend the national championships "for the first time in ages". At the other end of the scale, Jake McNaughton and Natania

Ngawhau, both 15, performed well at the champs. Nelsonians have a chance to listen to the champion band when they play their annual Mother's Day concert at the Annesbrook Church on Saxton Rd on Sunday May 14. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 each for groups of 10 or more, with all proceeds going towards the "not inexpensive" costs of running the band. "We need to pay for the purchase and maintenance of instruments and that's not inexpensive," Wayne says. "You pay up to $15,000 for a BBb base which is the most expensive instrument, and even a cornet costs $3000."

Book brings orphanage history to light phanage, it opened in 1886. In March 1919 the orphanage closed, and was sold for use as the Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital in Stoke, which opened in 1922. "The book is an historical fiction, based on some of the terrible things that happened in that place, in that community," says Tracey. "Terrible abuse happened to those boys, ignored until a report brought an end to the reign of the Marist Brothers. "Life after that wasn’t a lot better, the boys still starved and were not cared for as well as they could and should have been, but at least the worst excesses were stopped." It is the first published book for Tracey, who goes by the name A.N. Arthur. She has been based in Wellington since 2013, but still calls Nelson home. The book was a labour of love, taking her four years to write before it was published by Rangitawa Publishing.

The history of the Stoke Orphanage in Ngawhatu has been brought to life in a novel, written by ex-Nelson playwright and dramatist, Tracey Ramsay. 'Orphanage Boys' was released late last year, and was officially launched in Nelson last week. It is the story of brothers Samuel and James Brodie who are taken to the Stoke Orphanage in 1897 by their father while he sought work on the West Coast. They endure abuse and privation at the hands of the Marist Brothers, who ran the orphanage. They manage to survive hunger and illness until fate divides them, but years later, during the turmoil and chaos of New Zealand's Great Strike of 1913, they rediscover each other. And, the inspiration came from a personal connection. "My ex-husband's grandfather was an orphanage boy in New Zealand not in the Stoke orphanage, but one in the Wellington region," she says. "I just started digging a wee bit and found out about that history - it’s fascinating where it takes you. "And the other thing too, you know, as a country we have some of the worst child abuse statistics in the world - New Zealand has got a terrible undercurrent of abuse, and nothing is done about it." She is now working on her second book, ‘Soldier Boys’ which is due out at the end of the year. "Soldier Boys follows on from Orphanage Boys – taking the main characters from it, starting just before the outbreak of WW1," she says. He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of arthritis.

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked. Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “community concierge” washing windows and greeting customers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood promotion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”

Nelson Vintage Car Club The Nelson Vintage Car Club will mark a significant milestone when they officially open their new clubrooms at the Top of the South Speedway on Lower Queen St on Sunday May 14. And to celebrate the big occasion, they are inviting the public to come along to an open day and see some of the region’s coolest old cars which will be on display. There will also be cars and motorcycles from many of the region’s 27 motoring clubs which have been invited to join the celebrations. “It’s a big change for the club so we thought we’d invite everyone along to an open day,” Nelson Vintage Car Club Chairman Jim Wareing says. “It’s not a fund-raiser -it’s free and a chance for people to find out about our club and see some of our members’ cars and watch some fun events.” Jim says the club decided to move from its original clubrooms at Founders Park in Nelson because “it was complex with the Nelson City Council trying to run events and us trying to run our own”. The club spent a year looking for a new venue before one of their members, Lloyd Ewing, suggested they could purchase the vacant Speedway Association Clubrooms on Lower Queen St. “The speedway guys built a lovely new place and they were going to demolish their old clubrooms,” Jim says. “But Lloyd, who is also a member of the Speedway Association, said ‘hang about, the Vintage Car Club might want the building’ so he was the link and a deal was done.” They purchased the old clubrooms in February 2014 and last week put the finishing touches to a major renovation project that’s taken hundreds of hours of volunteer labour and a $40,000 grant from Pub Charities to complete. They installed a new kitchen and toilets, replaced the ceiling, repaired a leaky roof and painted the whole building. Not only did the club renovate the building,

they added to it, constructing a new shed for their tractor and mowing gear which they use to maintain the grounds as part of their rent agreement with the Speedway Association. But there’s no question the end result has been well worth the effort with Jim saying “this is home now and long may that last.” The club will be open to the public from 1pm when the Speedway pit gate on Lansdowne Rd will be opened. Draft City Amenity Bylaw open for consultation Consultation on the draft City Amenity Bylaw is now open. At a Council meeting in late March, Council confirmed that a bylaw was appropriate to address the gaps relating to safety, placement of things in public places, occupation of public places, and the ability to limit and remove material placed in public places. The draft City Amenity Bylaw has been prepared to maintain the amenity values of the inner city, city fringe and suburban commercial zones. Further information, including a copy of the draft bylaw, is available on Council’s website. Submissions can be made online or by picking up a copy of the consultation document from Council’s Customer Service Centre or any of the three libraries. The consultation period closes on 29 May 2017.

Masked Parade has a new date The date for the 2017 Masked Parade and Carnivale has been changed from Friday 20 October to Friday 27 October, to avoid clashes with Labour Weekend plans. Chair of the Community Services Committee, Councillor Gaile Noonan, says the date change was made after feedback from the community. "We hope this date works well for lots of people and that everyone, young and old, will come out to support this fantastic community event!" The Masked Parade is an iconic Nelson public art event which attracts schools, families, community groups, businesses and individuals of all ages to make masks, dress up and take part in this festive occasion. The theme this year is "We are the World" – a concept that is open to interpretation and storytelling in costume, music and dance, live on the streets of Nelson. Mapping Nelson’s hazards Council is currently engaging with the community on information relating to flood hazard, fault hazard and liquefaction hazard. We are seeking feedback on the information we hold for these hazards, and how people think Council should use the information in the development of the new Nelson Plan (resource management plan). Consultation is open until 31 May and further information and feedback forms are available on the Council’s website. Community information sessions are being held at the beginning of May, to help people better understand the information Council holds about these hazards. The sessions are designed as an informal way of providing information and finding out what people think about the hazards information. Doors will open at 6pm with an opportunity to look at maps and information provided by Council and to chat to officers. This will be followed by a presentation at 7pm on the hazard information, followed by a further opportunity to view the maps and chat with officers until 9pm. You can wave down the bus anywhere along the route where it is safe (and legal) for the bus to stop. Just make sure you stand where the driver can see you and give them a big wave so they know you want to jump on board. • Route 3 – Travels from town through The Wood and out as far as Tresillian Ave in Atawhai, including a Dodson Valley loop. • Route 4 – This takes you from the Bridge Street depot all the way up the Brook Valley, passing right by the NMIT campus on the way. • Route 5 – Takes you right through the Victory area and up to the hospital, taking in Toi Toi, Murphy, St Vincent and Vanguard Streets along the way. There is an off-peak loop that also takes in Kawai Street South three times a day. • Route 6 – This is an off-peak only route that travels up Washington Road and Princes Drive and then around the Tahunanui hills as far as Tosswill Road. It runs three times a day. • Route 7 – Circulates throughout the Stoke area. Remember all these routes are hail and ride and they all connect up with the services between Nelson and Richmond. If you are connecting with another service, remember to ask the drive for a transfer ticket so you don’t have to buy a second ticket when you change buses. Council’s annual survey nearly here The survey will be seeking feedback on a range of Council services and facilities. The results will help us track our performance and get feedback on areas for improvement. The survey will be a combination of phone interviews and online questionnaires which will be conducted by Versus Research, an independent market research company. They will be calling 400 households to get a representative cross-section of Nelson residents. The survey will also be made available online, in order to reach those without landlines. Each survey will take about fifteen minutes and results are anonymous. We appreciate the time taken for those residents who are involved.

Sam Dempster had one of his best nights in a Mike Pero Nelson Giants singlet in Saturday night’s 107-81 win over the Taranaki Mountainairs at the Trafalgar Centre, but you wouldn’t have heard that from him. In true 'do as I do not as I say' fashion, Sam let his actions do the talking, then deferred praise to his team mates after he hit 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in a win so emphatic it’s sparked a glimmer of a top four chance for the franchise which started the season 0-6. Sam lit it up from beyond the arc, hitting five of eight three point attempts. “My team mates put me in a good position to sink those shots,” Sam

says. “Kyle [Adnam] especially worked his butt off all night, Finn [Delany] knew they were going to double-team him all night so it was my job to knock down those shots when given the opportunity. “The thing that stood out for me was how well the ball moved all night. “From where we started at the start of the year, it’s heaps better. It looked like everyone was having fun.” Sam says lifting the intensity helped the team earn a full fourquarter performance. “We’ve all sat down and said 'we play for Nelson and that’s more than basketball, it’s about playing for the locals and playing for the jersey.' “I feel we have the firepower to compete with anyone and we have to stick to that belief.

“Things are starting to fall into place and we are aiming to sneak into that top four, and the way that everyone is beating each other in this league anything is possible." Sam was one of five Giants to make double figures with Ali Granger adding 15 points off the bench. The only concern was Kyle limping off midway through the final quarter with a leg issue. The return of cut former Giants big man Curtis Washington, who signed with the Mountainairs days after his release, vindicated the Giants' decision to let him go. The American managed one point in 17 minutes of work. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants hit the road to play the Hawke’s Bay Hawks next Saturday night before they return home to face the Super City Rangers on May 12.

Louise Kelly is eager to make her Olympic dream a reality, but it won’t be an easy mission. The Nelson-based judo exponent and New Zealand No 1 has returned from two months training in Scotland and has just competed with the Nelson team at the Oceania Championships in Tonga in the Under-70 class. The 17-year-old got interested in the sport while watching her younger brother Luke in the dojo when she was 10-yearsold. “I didn’t take to it naturally, I’d be shown something and then I’d have to be shown it 10 times. “I think that’s why I enjoyed it. I’d have to really work on it, it was a constant challenge.” Over time she has also got her dad Lindsay back into the sport. “He used to come down and bring his gear, but never got on the mat until one day he decid-

The powerful and dynamic Nelson College fullback scored 17 of his teams’ 22 points as they fought bravely to hang on to the Moascar Cup 22-21 with just 14 men against Christ’s College at Nelson College on Saturday. A new look Nelson College team defended the secondary school equivalent of the Ranfurly Shield with a gritty performance to begin their UC Championship campaign in style. For new co-captain Leicester, it was all about the grit his “brothers” showed, especially after his team was reduced to 14 men with 25 minutes to play after blindside flanker Brad Pool was red-carded for verbal abuse towards the referee. “I thought the boys really got up for each other, their forwards asked a lot of questions of us, we knew they would, and to hold on like that and absorb so much pressure, was awesome.” Nelson had the better attacking opportunities but

After a challenging season thanks to many factors, it appears the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway with have its new corporate grandstand ready to go for next summer’s racing. The committee had plenty of offtrack projects and challenges with the final plans for the rebuild of the Corporate Stand taking longer than anticipated, but it will be ready for next season, and the Hot Dog Stand falling victim to an electrical fault, it was a minor hiccup in the scheme of things with updates planned for the food service areas. The past season was likened to a roller coaster ride, the anticipation was huge with a slightly bigger season due to the new roster system put in place by its governing body Speedway New Zealand. It meant an extra meeting was needed for the New Zealand Sprint Car GP and an extra night to host the NZ Midget Title in concurrent weeks. The Nelson Speedway Club had secured Milestone Homes as its naming rights sponsor in the offseason, giving the club financial security to plan in the years ahead, Milestones Homes have committed their support until 2025, a huge benefit for the club. Between the rained out meetings, there were flashes of brilliance, the New Zealand Midget Title being one of the best meetings in its 75

year history, racing in its purest form, it was truly a meeting everyone will remember, the final round of the Hanmer Holiday Homes Super Stock Series had all the dramas as the front runners fell by the wayside, it was the locals that battled each other to allow visiting cars to grab the spoils. There were a few grades that were struggling for numbers at times; the Tigers were light, needing a couple of ring-ins to boost the team, growth in the contact grades maybe an issue going forward where grades like TQ’s and sprint cars were expanding, the youth grade continues to be strong, giving the club a good base of drivers into the future. Issues continue with neighbours upset over the noise levels at the speedway, the club have always been sympathetic to its neighbours. Initiatives like moving to earlier start times to limit late night noise, keeping meetings inside time lines and assisting with moving livestock on fireworks night. The number of meetings hasn’t really changed over the past decade, they average about 15 a year depending on NZ titles allocated. The out-going President Wayne Martin hopes that the issues will be sorted and the committee will be able to get on with making Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway “the Best little Speedway in NZ”.
