Panama company owns $2.3M in Nelson property Andrew Board A Panama company, owned by a wealthy European shipping family, owns land in Nelson worth $2.3 million, Nelson Weekly has discovered. Four plots of land on Walters Bluff, totalling almost 11 hectares, is owned by Syra International Financing Company SA. The current government valuation on the land is $2,330,000. The company was set up by Panamanian law firm Icaza, González-Ruiz & Alemán. It was another law firm, Mossack Fonseca, whose records were hacked and released as part of the Panama Papers scandal, which has highlighted how the world’s richest people dodge tax around the world. Four hundred journalists from around the world worked on the so-called Panama Papers, which showed that

New Zealand was among the countries used by wealthy foreigners to avoid tax in their own country. Syra is controlled by Swiss brothers Giovanni and Paolo Albertini, along with Giovanni’s son Alexandre. The family owns Marfin Management SAM which owns a shipping container company based in Monaco, on the Mediterranean. According to Open Corporates, a UK-based website that collects information on companies around the world, Syra was founded on September 8, 1978 two days after two other firms also owned by the family were created – Chios International Financing Company SA and Andros International Financing Company SA. Twelve jobs have been cut at the Nelson branch of Higgins Contracting in a “restructure to ensure on-going profit requirements”, and one of the axed workers suspects there are more job losses on the horizon. The nationwide civil construction company employs 50 staff at its Beach Rd headquarters in Richmond, but last week the Weekly learned that 12 of those jobs had been axed. In a statement, a Higgins spokesperson said the company had been consulting with staff

about a restructure and that a “small percentage” of the staff would lose their jobs in Nelson. The spokesperson said the cuts were aimed at ensuring the branch’s resources were in line with the demand for work so the business could “ensure on-going profit requirements”. They said company was working with staff to try and find suitable employment “elsewhere” with Higgins. One of the workers who lost their job, Allan Hoult, says he wasn’t aware of the number of staff made redundant because the company

held individual negotiations. However, Allan says Higgins told all the 49 staff, at the initial meeting, that they needed to get down to 25 staff, “so this may not be the end of it”. Allan says he was also disappointed at how the redundancies were managed. “We were just told ‘you’ve lost your job, grab a case of beer off the back of the ute on the way out’. “It’s bad timing too because my wife got made redundant just before Christmas. I’ll be hitting the streets to try and find work because we’ve still got the bills to pay. I’m not going to be sitting around - it’s onwards and upwards.”

Fresh push for Rabbit Island rowing course

The idea of a rowing course at Rabbit Island is being refloated by Nelson Rowing Club captain Tim Babbage. Tim is keen to see a purposebuilt rowing course that would be capable of hosting the Maadi Cup national secondary school rowing regatta in 10 years time. The 2km course has been brought to Tasman District Council in the past, without success. Tim says it would be not just for rowing but also triathlon and water-skiing. “It’s been on the radar and it’s been off the radar,” Tim says. “It would be great for us but it would be great all-round for water sport.” The current plan would have it in The Traverse, which is sheltered from trees and goes against the prevailing breeze which means the course will be sheltered from the wind which can delay racing The Maadi Cup is a week-long regatta which attracts 2500 competitors and 1500 support staff, as well as 10,000 spectators for the two finals days. Tim estimated that would mean the Tasman region would benefit from 50,000 bed nights.

Lake Karapiro near Cambridge hosts the North Island event and Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel hosts the South Island version. Tim says a Nelson course could host it every four years initially and he believes it would have the backing of secondary schools because of Nelson’s location, especially with the challenges of getting to Lake Ruataniwha. “Obviously, within rowing this move would be quite contentious because the South Island Rowing Asso-

ciation owns facilities and surrounds of Lake Ruataniwha. “Twizel is a challenging place to get to and yet 10,000 people turn up there, so imagine how many would come if the event was in Nelson?” Tasman District Council communications advisor Chris Choat says any groups with suggestions like this are encouraged to submit it for consideration now for the Rabbit Island Draft Reserve Management Plan. Nelson Weekly understands the working group driving the rowing course idea will put forward a submission.

Immigration fight goes on for Websters Andrew Board

SKI SALE: Willow and Hester Trolove, of Nelson, at the Rainbow Snow Gear Sale on Saturday morning. As usual, hundreds flocked to the secondhand sale at Hampden St School, which featured everything related to skiing and snowboarding. Last year saw a record sale with just over $60,000 worth of snow gear sold and this year organisers exceeded that after adding a second sale in Blenheim. The combined Nelson and Blenheim sales managed to generate a total of $70,000, with the ski field receiving just under $10,000 which will be used for club infrastructure. Steve and Gail Webster’s fight to stay in New Zealand rages on, despite being granted an interim visa last Wednesday night. Last week, Nelson Weekly reported that Steve and Gail could have been forced to leave the country last Friday after their request for an interim visa was denied. But Immigration New Zealand confirmed that they will be allowed to stay in New Zealand until a decision is made on their Essential Skills work visa, which is currently being considered. “No compliance action will be taken until the couple have exhausted all their avenues to stay,” says lead communications adviser at Immigration NZ, Marc Piercey. Steve says the feedback he and Gail received after the article was published was hugely reassuring. “Whether we win or lose this fight, the support from the article and on Facebook has given us the strength to get out of bed. It’s just draining going through it so the support just keeps us going.” The Websters have two applications in with Immigration New Zealand. One is for an Essential

The second is the appeal to their declined application for residency on the back of a Business Visa. The couple own Earthbloom Flowerstore on Waimea Rd and Steve says he and Gail were concerned that if they were forced to leave the country their business would suffer. He says, while the interim visa means the “pressure off just a little bit”, they still have a long way to go. “You cannot describe the stress, it affects every waking moment and every decision. Everything is on hold, it’s like living in limbo.”

Two years of hard work has paid off for Natureland, with the Tahunanui zoo this month earning its full welfare accreditation from the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia. Natureland is owned by a local trust and employs eight people. Since the trust took over management of the facility in 2014, trustees Meg Selby and Mike Rutledge say welfare has been at the forefront of their thinking. “The welfare side of things has been the number one focus for us since the trust took over. When we arrived there were quite a few things that were not ok. The sorts of things that are not acceptable in a modern institution,” says Mike. A change in welfare philosophy meant a big change in the way things were done at Natureland. The question wasn’t just ‘does this animal have food’, it was ‘does this animal have nutritionally balanced food and a choice of food’. Meg says the new approach goes further than just making sure the animals aren’t suffering, it’s about giving them opportunity and choice. “The old way they called the ‘five freedoms’ and it is basically freedom from negatives. Nelson fraudster denied Supreme Court bid: A Nelson fraudster who stole $500,000 from clients in his investment advisory business has been denied the chance to take his case to the Supreme Court. Tony Mount is serving a six-year jail sentence after being found guilty of 75 fraud-related charges, including theft by a person in a special relationship and obtaining by deception. The former investment adviser was today denied leave to appeal to the Supreme Court. Mount’s proposed appeal focused on his claim that his fair trial rights were breached because he didn’t have a lawyer. “The proposed appeal does not raise any issues of public or general importance… there is no appearance of a miscarriage of justice,” says the Supreme Court.

New $100M retirement village Summerset is planning to develop a retirement village near Richmond that will become home to around 400 people. The village will be made up of approximately 280 retirement units made up of a mix of villas, townhouses and serviced apartments, and a care centre which will include rest home, hospital and dementia care. Summerset has purchased an eight hectare property at 1 Hill St North for the development that is due to start this year. Summerset already has a village in Nelson, Summerset in the Sun, located 4.5 kilometres away in Stoke.

Summerset chief executive Julian Cook says the company is excited about the development. “Richmond has a great climate, outdoor attractions and wineries, plus it’s also one of the fastest-growing areas in New Zealand. “Our existing village in Stoke is our largest village to date, and has been one of our fastest growing. This village is nearly complete and, with the strong continued interest we are seeing, we are pleased to be able to provide additional high quality, contemporary, retirement village living and care options to meet the growing local demand for both the

Tasman and Nelson areas. “This development will bring over $100 million investment into the region, as well as create employment opportunities.” Julian says people aged 75 and over make up around seven per cent of the total population in Nelson and Tasman. By 2033 the population over 75 years will be around 18,000, up from around 7200 in 2013, making up around 17 per cent of the total population. The Richmond site is Summerset’s fifth location in the South Island, bringing the total number of sites to 27 nationwide. It’s taken ten years, but finally Tahunanui Drive has a pedestrian refuge near the Tahuna Medical Centre. Mayor Rachel Reese cut the ribbon on the new refuge on Friday. The $60,000 refuge allows pedestrians to stop in the middle of the road and wait until there is a gap in the traffic so they can cross safely. Supporters of the new refuge include the Tahuna Community Centre and the Tahuna Business Association, and they say it will allow folk to get from one side of the village to the other. Garin College’s Motion takes out Rockquest Jessie Johnston It was a night to remember for Garin College band Motion, as they took out the Nelson regional final of Smokefreerockquest on Friday night. “We’re absolutely chuffed, the boys absolutely outdid themselves,” says the band's front man, Kieran O’Connor. “What a night, the crowd was fantastic, it’s a night where you just realise why you do music. I’m proud of the boys and very thankful to be where we are right now.” The four-piece band, including Sotaro Kawada, drums, Caleb Binns, keyboard and Carl Gillan, guitar and vocals, now has the opportunity to compete for the Smokefreerockquest title in the national final, which will take place in Auckland on Saturday, September 24. “I was saying to the boys beforehand, you know, let’s just forget about trying to get the awards and go out there and give it our all,” says Kieran. “We spent a lot of time polishing and critiquing the songs. We just wanted to get up there and play music that lots of people would enjoy.” The 12 bands vying for the title

Strong demand for homes continues Kate Russell

The prospect of buying your first home should be exciting. But would-be home buyers in Nelson are dealing with a market so congested the houses are selling before they are even advertised. And you only need to attend a local open home to see how competitive things have become. Lines of cars, dozens of pairs of shoes at the front door and cramped rooms, are what househunters are facing at open homes around the region at the moment. Attending an open home in Victory’s Emano St on Saturday was just a taste of how tough things are, with around 60 people squeezing into the three bedroom Californian bungalow. With the fire roaring, sun streaming through the windows, and agents handing around coffee and chocolate - people were impressed with what they saw. But it’s a case of too many buyers and not enough houses, and people are missing out. In fact, local real estate firm Summit Real Estate say they are ex-

periencing almost a 50 per cent drop in new listings compared to this time last year. “There are so many buyers and just not enough houses for sale,” says Summit Real Estate sales and marketing consultant, Jon Ichon. “Some buyers are really desperate at the moment.” He says they have a number of buyers on their database who get to be “front runners” and view houses before they are listed, which an “essential” thing to do if you’re a serious buyer. Speaking to hopeful house-hunters at Emano St, many said they were finding it “hard-going”. Ellie Salcin was there with her seven year old daughter, and says they are looking for their first home after living overseas and in Christchurch. They weren’t initially considering the Victory area, but are now keeping an open mind. “We looked a bit last year, but gave up as we got put off by the prices. But then we realised it’s not getting any better so have been hunting again since February,” she says.

Rebecca McKenzie and Enola Turner, also first-home buyers who have just moved here from Auckland, say all the open homes they have been to so far have been “crazy busy”. “It’s a bit of an emotional battering – you just see the same people again and again at the viewings,” says Rebecca. Out on Richmond’s Washbourn Drive, a peaceful three-bedroom house that was just listed on Thursday had already gone to multi-offer by Friday evening, and is now under a conditional offer. But yet, the open home still attracted around 20 groups all up, and the disappointment on people’s faces when they were told it was already under offer was hard to ignore.

Speaking at the open home on Saturday, Donna Ching-Tregidga from YOU. Realty says the amount of interest they are seeing is “huge” and most price brackets are “going crazy”. “If we had five properties like this one, we would have been able to sell all five,” she says. “We’ve had calls from Auckland and Wellington about it, with people willing to get on a plane just to see it.” Donna says they are seeing an increase of out-of-town buyers, especially people who are returning to Nelson after living abroad, or other parts of the country. House hunter Helen Dirkze, who has just moved here from Wellington, was at the open home looking for a retirement abode for her and her husband. She says they have been “quite surprised” at the level of competition. “We thought we’d be spoilt for choice,” she says. “There’s not

much coming onto the market right now. You definitely need to be a cash buyer.” Another couple at the open home said they are looking to buy in Brightwater, but, due to a lack of properties, they were now being forced to consider other areas. Donna says that both buyers and sellers are being really wise, doing their research and know what they want. QV Nelson Registered Valuer Craig Russell says the Nelson market remains strong, with prices rising in both Nelson and Tasman. “Listing numbers continue to fall which is contributing to strong demand across the board,” he says. The latest QV statistics show that Nelson home values rose 3.3 per cent over the past three months and 9.5 per cent year on year. The average value in the Nelson City is now $451,124, and $446,291 in Tasman.

Morrison Square has welcomed a new manager – a former Cantabrian, who now calls Nelson home. Ange Leonard stepped into the manager’s role at the beginning of April and brings a wealth of experience, with a background in retail, hospitality and fashion. Ange and her husband ran the successful City Seafood Market in Christchurch but, after losing the business in the earthquakes, she went on to the role as

regional manager for Postie Plus for part of the South Island. A qualified stylist by trade, Ange also helped Air New Zealand launch their Trelise Cooper uniforms. She was Ange Leonard. also behind the opening of some of the container stores in Christchurch, post-earthquakes. Ange says she is excited to be living in

I think I have found a possible solution to the traffic suggestion along SH6 to/from Tahuna. The council just needs to change the timing on the traffic lights to favour the traffic building up along the highway, instead of from Bisley Ave. It would take about 20 minutes to do and save millions, not to mention a whole community. Kate Russell: What made you decide to run for mayor? Pete Rainey: Like many people reading this, my family, my business and my future are here in Nelson. I grew up here and I’m committed to this place. I’m running for mayor because I believe we can make Nelson the best place in New Zealand to live. I’ve been on council for nine years, and fundamentally got to a point where I decided that I didn’t want to continue on council under the same regime. It’s not my style of leadership and it's certainly not the way I think things should be going so I’m going for the mayoralty and not running for council.

Three-term Nelson City councillor Pete Rainey has put his hand up for this year’s mayoralty bid and says he’s got the passion, skills and the heart to take over from Rachel Reese. Born and bred in Nelson, the 56-year-old father of two is the former head of music at Nelson College for Girls, and has also been running the Smokefreerockquest for 28 years. Ken’s still driving at 90 Jessie Johnston

At 90 years old, Ken Ivory is still mad about cars, in fact he still holds his driver’s licence and regularly takes his vintage vehicles out for a spin. Ken got his licence in 1941, when he was 15 years old and living in Hastings. “That’s the earliest you could get it, the day I turned 15. I got it in [my dad’s] ‘37 Ford V8, we just had to get in the car with a traffic cop or policeman and he just told you where to go, and if you did it right he said, “well, that’s alright, we’ll go back to the office.” Five shillings later, and Ken was free to head out on the road. While his initial form of transport was a motorbike, Ken’s first car was a 1924 Ford Model T which had only done 22,000 kilometres and cost him 15 pounds. In 1943, he drove it to Nelson when his family shifted here, “Dad and my brother drove a Model A and I drove the Model T with Mum in it.” Ken says he’s always been mad on cars, but his passion is Ford’s. “My Dad had Fords so I just carried on,” says Ken.

“Whenever you go anywhere [in a Ford] you’re always sure of getting back, I’ve never been let down yet.” Over his 90 years as a Ford enthusiast, Ken has owned five Model T vehicles and around 20 Model A’s, a few V8’s, a Rolls Royce and a Mercedes. Restorations have also been part of his history with Fords. “It was easy when I did it because you had better pickings than what you have today. You could find an old Model A or Model T in the shed and it didn’t take much to drive it home.” "But that doesn’t happen today. You might find a whole lot of bits that you have to try and put back together.” Ken has been a member of the Nelson Vintage Car Club for over 50 years, and while maintaining a licence at the age of 90 might seem like a huge achievement, Ken recently undertook a trip to Christchurch in his 1931 Model A Sport Coupe. In 1962, Ken joined the Canterbury Vintage Car Club because a branch in Nelson didn’t exist. In 1964, he was involved in the establishment of the Nelson group, “because a good group of us liked

Photo: Jessie Johnston. old cars and having outings and it sort of developed from there.” Over Easter this year, the Canterbury club held their 60th anniversary and being an ex-member, Ken and his partner Julie Brewerton decided to make the journey. Making the trip to Christchurch in a vintage car is something Ken says he would do again, but perhaps via a different route. “We didn’t realise there were so many trucks and so much traffic on State Highway 1, a bit frightening when you’re going slow.

You have to keep stopping and letting them go, so it takes you twice as long,” says Julie. They completed the trip in two days and then, four days later, they did it all over again on the return journey. Ken still drives his vintage cars regularly, enjoying a trip out from Brightwater to the Nelson Vintage Car Club headquarters on Lower Queen St every Wednesday morning. His current vehicles include the 1931 Model A Sport Coupe, which

he has owned for around three years, the very first Model A he bought, a 1931 Model A Tourer which he acquired in 1962, as well as Julie’s classic 1974 Rover and their modern day runaround Mazda. “I might still have had [my first] Model T if it hadn’t run a bearing on the Whangamoa’s. I didn’t know much about it in those days, I was only 16. A Model T doesn’t like going up hills because the oil doesn’t get to the front bearing. It made [such a] racket so I had to get towed home,” says Ken. Ken says he always meets people interested in his Model A’s when he takes them out, and will continue to drive them for a while yet. As well as celebrating Ken’s 90th birthday, the Nelson Vintage Car Club also used their meet on Sunday to unveil a number of restoration projects that members of the club had been working on. The vehicles are brand-new on the road after being restored from junk and include a 1929 Austin 7, 1955 Austin A30, 1918 Buick Tourer and a 1914 Hobart Motorcycle.

Stoke Badminton celebrates 50 years

The Stoke Badminton Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary last Thursday with the many of the club's oldest members getting together to reminisce about the good old days at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Ninety-five people attended the anniversary, including the club's oldest former member Beryl White, 95, who had the honour of leading the cake cutting ceremony. Four of the club's five Life Members, Lee Charlett, Natalie Sellers,

Daph McKay and Kaye Gowans, also attended. Interestingly, Natalie made the 25th Anniversary cake in 1991 and provided the cake recipe for the 50th Anniversary. "It was an absolutely wonderful day," Lee says. "It was very emotional seeing the ladies cutting the cake because they have all been members for so long." The club has about 25 members who play at the Stoke Memorial Hall on Thursday mornings.

Vintage Rotarians to celebrate anniversary Simon Bloomberg Two of Nelson West Rotary's originals will be looking back on half a century of helping the community, when they attend the club's 50th anniversary dinner and annual changeover at a function in Nelson. The club was formed in 1966 and, next Wednesday, three of the founding members, Russell Egan, Henry Houston and Kerry Neal, will join around 80 people at the 50th anniversary at the Nelson Yacht Club. Russell, 78, and Henry, 91, are still members of the club and, along with Kerry, are the only survivors from the first meeting at the Regency Hall on Rutherford St on June 1, 1966. Russell and Henry both recall being asked to join Nelson West Rotary by CT Webley, although Russell says he was a reluctant recruit. "My father was a keen Rotarian in Timaru and he was up here in Nelson when CT Webley came around to my business recruiting members," Russell says. "My father was talking to CT, and when

"I wasn't that enthusiastic but I said I'd stay in Rotary as long as I enjoyed it and, 50 years later, I'm still a member." Russell and Henry have not re-

gretted saying yes to CT Webley, with Henry saying "I have been happy to be part of a group that was making a contribution to society." And the two foundation members have been directly involved with most of those "contributions" that have ranged from

small donations to big construction projects. "We take on a major project each year so there are too many of them to remember them all," Russell says. "We've made hundreds of donations over the years too - I

wouldn't like to think how much money we've raised, but it would be considerable." Some of the major projects Nelson West has been involved with include refurbishing Rotoiti Lodge and relocating a building from Nelson Intermediate School to establish the Outdoor Education Centre at Marahau. They have also installed seating at the Centre of New Zealand, constructed boardwalks for the Tasman Great Taste Trail and donated funds for equipment at the Nelson Tasman Hospice and Nelson Hospital chapel. The club organises the popular Boulder Bank Walk each year, donating the proceeds to the Nelson Food Bank, Coastguard and Nelson Tasman Hospice. It also donates funds to Rotary's international projects including Shelterbox and Polio Plus, and sponsors and hosts international exchange students. Next Wednesday's anniversary function will also feature the annual changeover, with Richard Lee taking over from Sheila Grainger as president.

Nelsonians are picking up their spades and heading off to fight in the Battle for the Banded Rail, planting native trees and shrubs around the Waimea Inlet to enhance the habitat for the rare wetland bird. Banded rail numbers have declined throughout New Zealand over the last 30 years, with the only remaining South Island populations found around Nelson and Marlborough. Last year, volunteers planted 5000 native trees and shrubs around the Waimea Inlet and this Saturday they will be digging in again at a community planting at Dominion Embayment. Volunteer Gillian Bishop says the plantings are a key part of the Battle for the Banded Rail which started last year. She says the amount of habitat has been reduced by "development" around the Waimea Inlet and the project is helping restore some of that habitat. "We planted 5000 plants last

year and we want to plant another 5000 this year," Gillian says. "We planted at five sites last year and we have three more this year, so we hope to create a network of habitats for the birds." Gillian says the birds are only found in areas where there are suitable species of food, including a small estuarine snail and crabs. She says they don't know exactly how many banded rail live around the Waimea Inlet because they are a very secretive, but "numbers have declined dramatically since a survey conducted in 1987." Gillian says the second part of the project is coordinating a trapping programme that involves 130 volunteers setting a network of 500 traps from Mapua to Rabbit Island to control predators. The traps have been

supplied by the Department of Conservation which is one of the partners in the project. "The project came out of the Waimea Inlet Forum and we have fantastic support from DOC, Tasman District Council and all our volunteers. We also received a grant from the Rata Foundation." Gillian says they have a number of community planting days scheduled over the next month and need as many volunteers as possible to help out. Plantings are from 9am to 1pm and anyone interested in volunteering should bring a spade, gloves and suitable footwear to the planting sites. Planting days will be held at Stringer Creek May 29, North Bronte Peninsula on Cardno Way June 12, and Research Orchard Rd June 26. A year ago, we changed our frying medium from beef dripping to rice bran oil, under the assumption that we were offering our guests a healthier alternative. They may not be as obvious as our native birds and vegetation, but New Zealand’s streams and their migratory inhabitants are still an important part of our ecology that need protecting, say the organisers of World Fish Migration Day in Nelson. World Fish Migration Day is a global celebration, creating awareness of the importance of fish passages and migratory fish. The Tasman region officially opened this year’s event to the world on Saturday, with an educational day at the former dam site on Richmond’s Reservoir Creek. Organisers estimate around 100 people visited throughout the day, witnessing demonstrations of remediated fish passages, enjoying children’s activities and learning from council’s resource scientist, Trevor James, about the many species of native fish who rely on migration to complete their life cycle. Around 75 per cent of the fish passage barriers in the Tasman district are overhanging culverts, rather than dams or weirs which make up the other 25 per cent. Whether it’s an overhang of a few mils, or eight to ten metres, fish are unable to continue their journey through the culvert, which is why Trevor is involved with fixing these structures during yearly campaigns, creating a pathway for the fish using conveyor belt material and mussel spat rope. This allows fish to either use their wide, flat fins to suction on to the surface and walk up into the culvert, or wriggle up in between the ropes, a strategy used by fish like the inanga. “Today is

about celebrating the health of our stream systems and trying to make them healthier,” says Trevor. “There are the groups that have worked in the hills here to bring back native vegetation and the bird life, and this is doing the same for our streams.” The former dam site has now been replaced by a fish pass, constructed two years ago to help fish migrate upstream. The pass features ladderlike rungs which also help slow the water down as fish make their way to the catchment. “I’m so happy that so many people turned out to learn about our native fish. They are shy creatures, but when people see a native fish and they understand more about them, they care more for them. Because most of our native fish are nocturnal, it’s out of sight, out of mind, very little is known about them, whereas the birds are a much more readily identifiable thing,” says Trevor. “If there’s one plea that I would like to put out there it would be, if you have a lifestyle block, or you know someone who does, and there’s a farm track or a driveway that passes over a stream, chances are it’ll have a culvert. I encourage you to look at that culvert and, if it is undercut and over hanging, then contact us at the council and we’ll put it on our list and at some point over the next year or two we’ll come and fix it for no charge.” The top of the south has 20 species of native fish with all but three of those species needing to migrate up and down our waterways to the sea. These include eel, whitebait, bullies, torrentfish, lamprey and common smelt.

Nelson College draw with CBHS Jacob Page

Nelson College battled valiantly for a 6-6 draw against secondary school rugby heavyweights Christchurch Boys’ High School, but it could have been so much better. Each team could only muster a penalty goal in each half, but Nelson College missed two of their own and turned down a kickable shot at goal with eight minutes left in favour of a scrum in the UC Championship clash at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. The decision was perplexing because the Nelson College forwards had been going backwards for most of the game and the ensuing tighthead meant the hosts had to scramble in the latter stages just to get the draw. Despite the game having no tries, there was some good attack. Nelson College fullback Leicester Faingaanuku was a powerful ballrunner all game, as was left winger-turned prop later in the game, Teu Sami. CBHS’s tactical kicking was superior and they did look sharper in the backs, but Nelson’s resolute defence came

Two goals from Sam Harris helped FC Nelson end the undefeated run of Richmond Athletic in the Nelson Bays’ division one football competition on Saturday. The result also spices up the Chatham Cup fixture between the two teams in a fortnight. FC Nelson were clinical at set-piece time and had a surprising 3-0 lead on the league leaders by halftime. Goals by Dion Keelty and Nat Payn got the score back to 3-2 for the hosts, but that was as close as they got. Nelson Suburbs and Suburbs Seals shared the points with a 2-2 draw at Saxton Field. Seals led late into the game but conceded a goal and then had their final opportunity cleared off the line. Marlborough Mariners found that winning feeling with a 4-0 win over a Tahuna side that has suffered back-toback defeats. Hector Cruz scored twice for the Mariners. Two goals each from Matt Mackay and Jack Wright boosted Nelson College to a 6-0 win over Wakefield.

Rhonda replicates aunt with bowls haul Jacob Page

Stoke bowler Rhonda Bellis has emulated her aunt by winning the club's four main women's trophies. Rhonda won the singles, pairs, triples and fours and was named women's bowler of the year at the club's awards night on Friday. Her family have been an integral part of the club for generations, both club greens are named after her family. "I grew up being carted around to national championships in a caravan, so bowls is in my blood." The feat was achieved by her aunt Orma Carter 20 years ago and she is teammates with the last person to achieve it, Marie Watson. Rhonda was not going to play the singles until she was convinced by teammate and defending champion Barbara

Nelson badminton team makes great start The Nelson senior badminton team had a positive start to their competition season with wins over Marlborough and Picton The team of Kim Binns, Brenda Helliwell, Michelle Westley, Tegan Weston, Phil Dittmer, Nick Eden, Leo Ho, Jamie Marwick and Rory Weston, whitewashed Marlborough and eased past Canterbury in what were encouraging signs for the rest of the season. Marlborough were no match for Nelson who won all 16 matches

Five of the matches were decided over three games, and if the results had gone the other way, the tie score would have been much closer. The second tie was against Canterbury and only four of the matches went to three games, but Canterbury won two of them, so the final score was 14 – 2 to Nelson. The next series of ties will be held in Canterbury during late July, when the Nelson team will play Otago 1, Otago 2 and Southland, to complete the round-robin competition.

One of the enjoyable things in life is taking the kids out fishing. During the last school holidays we took our boys, Lucas and Ollie, out for a few days fishing. We stayed overnight at French Pass where we were blessed with calm and sunny weather. After a scenic walk to French Pass lookout, the kids couldn’t wait to get started with some fishing. Lucas caught his first snapper when he was three years old, now at seven he is becoming quite skilled and is already trying to tell Dad how to do it. On the photo you see him hold-

ing his new PB snapper he caught on this trip. For kids, this is a great adventure and aren't they lucky to grow up in this amazing environment, so it’s great to see them enjoying it. The fish they catch are entered into the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club annual fishing competition that finishes this month, followed by the big Prize Giving in June. Jacks blew past Marist in the second half to win 2518 in their Grade 1 netball contest at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. After a tense first three quarters, Jacks’ defensive pressure proved too much for Marist to handle. The teams traded early goals, but Jacks probably had the better of an opening quarter which felt like both teams were feeling each other out. Both defensive ends dominated the first half with goals at a premium. After a 6-all stalemate through the opening quarter, Marist had the better of the second quarter until they let their intensity slip late in the quarter. Marist did well to play to their strength and slow the game down when they were on attack, ensuring they got the ball to the shooters. Wing attack Mica Kaye was busy around the court

McCulloch was a positive for her team which often turned the ball over further down the court. When Jacks shortened their passes, they found results and eventually evened up the game as Marist’s intensity dropped. Jacks 4-0 third quarter run swung the momentum back in their favour.

It was Jacks that had scrambled to a 17-15 third quarter advantage. Jacks goal defence Claudia Woods made a number of key intercepts as the margin grew. Marist’s patience in defence had given way to a flustered effort which resulted in more turnovers.

Three brothers have won the Garin cross-country title for a combined nine years in a row. Year 13 pupil Jared Lautenslager won the Garin College senior cross-country title for the third straight year earlier this month His brother Jeff won three straight from 2011 to 2013. Their older brother, Craig, won three straight from 2008-10. Jared, who finished the 4.6km race in 14min 19 sec, won the Garin junior race in Year 9 and 10 to make this his fifth straight victory in school cross country. Jared will be one of the favourites in the senior boys race at the Tasman Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships on May 25. Tasman United make first signing Andrew Board

Tasman United has secured its first ever signing ahead of its maiden National League campaign this summer – goal keeper Coey Turipa. Coey played for Canterbury United in last year’s competition and the franchise was understood to be keen to retain his services. But Nelson Pine LVL Tasman United has pulled off a coup by signing the AMI Nelson Suburbs shot-stopper. Tasman’s head coach Richard Anderson rated Coey as one of the top keepers in last year’s competition and says it was vital to “get Coey on board early”. “We believe Coey to be one of the stand out goalkeepers in the league, and he also has a great deal of potential to tap into," he says. "It is not an understatement when I say I believe he can become the outstanding goalkeeper within the competition.” Coey has previously played for the Nelson Marlborough Falcons

was a bit of a battle to prise Coey away from Canterbury, which finished in the top four of last year’s competition. “There were a number of interested franchises for Coey’s services and it is fantastic for our young franchise he has chosen us. "Coey has come up through the grades in Nelson, and being a local player with the immense standing he commands, Coey will be a talisman for this side.” He says he was “delighted” to get Coey’s signature on paper and that local ties were a big help in getting the deal done. “It was the measure of the man that he felt a lot of loyalty to his current team [Canterbury] for the opportunity that they had given him, but in the end the pull of family and playing for his local region won out.” A raft of local players are also expected to sign for Tasman United in the coming weeks.
