Putting Nelson’s morning commute to the test Staff reporters The bike is king for Nelson’s morning commute. In the wake of last week’s submissions on the Nelson’s draft Regional Land Transport Plan, the Nelson Weekly decided to test a small snapshot of the city’s issues. We stationed reporters on a bike, a car and in a bus, and got them to race to a designated site in the city during rush hour. The goal was to make it from Stoke’s Strawbridge Square to Nelson city’s 1903 Square in the least amount of time, without breaking any laws. We decided to come through Bishopdale rather than Tahunanui because of the roadworks. So at 8.15am yesterday, when the NBus left from outside Countdown on Main Rd Stoke, a reporter was on board. The congestion on Waimea Rd heading into town has long been a point of contention. Some point to it as a sign that a new highway needs to be built, others say it means that more people should ride their bikes. The experiment was merely about

But, I quietly enjoyed it. I was able to zone out, listen to music, ignore the grid-locked cars as we approached the Beatson Rd roundabout, and not have to worry about finding a park. But it was slow. It took 15 minutes to reach the SPCA on Waimea Rd. By 8:36am

I figured the Nelson commuter traffic must be a myth. As I cruised down Main Rd Stoke, I zipped past my colleague on the bus with a smug grin on my face. The sun was shining, the tunes were blasting, and my victory was seemingly assured. Then came the crawl. Things came to a grinding halt at the Beatson Rd roundabout, the speedo spent the next 15 minutes bouncing be-

tween two and 10kmh. The accelerator began to collect dust as I watched with envy as the cyclists effortlessly bypassed the gridlock. My mood quickly deteriorated as the aggression of the other drivers elevated. It was every driver for themselves with little room for hesitation or courteousness. I then realised the fuel light had come on adding more stress to the situation. With one eye on the gauge and the other on the strobing brake lights in front of me, I meandered down Waimea Rd. The crawl continued into the city, a journey that Google Maps estimated at 17 minutes had taken 26. After initially parking

I zipped down the side of a line-up of cars and busses, easily crossed through the roundabout and onto Beatson Rd. Again, there was a slight incline where I miraculously managed to overtake another cyclist.

I wasn’t over exerting myself but still, this was a race. Then onto the Railway Reserve, I shot a glance over to Waimea Rd and shook my head at the crawl that was starting to bank up. I rushed down the bike path, passing Nelson Intermediate students coming the other way. Onto St Vincent St and into town. The only traffic light I encountered was on the corner of Hardy St and Rutherford. Then it was a simple skip through town and up to the top of Trafalgar St energised, not puffed. I expected it to be close, but I was waiting for about five minutes before I caught sight of any of my competitors. It was a good win.

Nelson city will get seven new state houses as figures show that demand has more than quadrupled in the last two years. Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford announced that 155 new state houses will be built in 15 regional centres by the middle of this year. Seven of these are tagged for Nelson. “This is the first step in building more new homes to help those most in need in our re-

gions. In total, it will build more than 270 bedrooms for individuals or families in the areas where they are needed most. Figures from the Ministry of Social Development show that demand for state housing has skyrocketed in recent years. In December 2015 there were 17 people on the social housing register but in December last year this had grown to 78 people. Rachel Boyack, who ran for Labour in Nelson during the last general election, says the announcement shows that the Government is serious about alleviating housing issues in

the region. “We have had a big population increase and now there are lots of people who are desperate for houses.” Housing NZ will build the new state houses, which will be modern, warm and dry, on its vacant land and on its larger properties. They will mostly consist of one or twobedroom homes, with some larger homes. They will be low maintenance, fully insulated, and have carpets, curtains and double glazing. Work will begin on the houses this month and it’s expected that people will start moving in from mid-2018.

Family ‘heartbroken’ after horror crash

Carmen Marie Yanko - a 53-yearold mother - is the innocent victim who died during a police pursuit in Hope on Sunday. Her children released a statement yesterday saying they were “heartbroken and reeling” from this “senseless tragedy”. “She lived to be a mother and was there for us always.

“Carmen loved and lived fiercely and will be terribly missed by her family and friends.” Messages of love and support are also being shared online for the family of the innocent woman, who was killed when a car fleeing police crashed into her vehicle. One tribute described Carmen as a “special lady” who always made

people feel welcome in her home. The two occupants of the car fleeing from police were 25-yearold Johnathan Tairakena and 33-year-old Phillip Jamie Stretch. The vehicle driven by Johnathan Tairakena had led police on a 6km pursuit when they crashed into Yanko’s car on SH6 near Clover Rd.

Stretch, a passenger in the car, had a previous conviction for killing someone in a vehicle accident. In 2001, Stretch was sentenced to 18 months in jail for killing a passenger after a crash. However on Sunday, Stretch was the passenger in the car on which was being driven by Tairakena,

who was a disqualified driver. Police had been chasing the vehicle for 6km and the pursuit had not been called off when the collision happened on State Highway 6 near Clover Rd at about 5.40am. NEWS Phantom found some builders: The Nelson Youth Theatre Company had a “great response” after the putting the call out for builders through the Nelson Weekly. The company is bringing The Phantom of the Opera to Nelson for the first time ever from 8-21 April, but they were short on volunteers to help them build the challenging set. “We found exactly who we were looking for,” says director Richard Carruthers. “Three ex and current professional theatre set builders/scenic artists and a handyman builder, who have taken over all the difficult tasks.” Hampden St School ‘tops up’ zone: Hampden St School are currently accepting out-of-zone enrolments after being “hit hard” by a restrictive home zone. Principal Don McLean says that applications for out-of-zone places are being accepted for students who will become eligible for enrolment between 5 March and 1 December, with the deadline for applications being 29 March. The board has determined that 30 places are likely to be available and, if a ballot is required, it will be held on 4 April. National Farmers Market Week: The Nelson Farmers Market is getting behind the very first NZ National Farmers Market Week this Wednesday, 15 March, with a chilli-eating competition. Nelson Police impress youngsters Sara Hollyman Nelson families were treated to a behind the scenes look at the Nelson Police force on Sunday. Families from around the region gathered at the Nelson Police Station to get up close and personal with different branches of the

force including the Armed Offenders Squad, Chief Investigation Bureau and Search and Rescue. The open day was aimed at encouraging young people to consider the police force as a career and to give the public a more relaxed look at what Nelson Police get up to. Local children had the

opportunity to take a ride in a police car, complete a physical competency test, have a go at shooting targets on a digital simulator and even collect evidence at a crime scene. Seven-year-old Jesse Jury tried his hand at finding evidence at a crime scene. “I’d like to be a police officer

and do stuff like this, the investigating, and driving the cars would be cool, too.” Riley Jones, 9, decided after trying his hand with some of the Armed Offenders gear, that he would like to become a policeman for a different reason. “No, not the cars, I’d like to be a policeman for the guns.”

It might be coming up to Easter but one Nelson rabbit lover is warning parents about flippantly buying their children one as a new pet. “Around this time of year there is a lot of impulse buying because they are cute, but they are quite tricky,” says Nadine Kuntz, who has three such furry friends. Her call comes as the SPCA is inundated with rabbits due to many people dumping them after becoming bored or finding out they are harder to handle than first thought. “You need patience,” says Nadine. “They are wonderful, but they

aren’t like cats which you can just leave alone. They need attention.” Her three rabbits tell a story. 'Dennis Hopper' came to her from the SPCA after being dumped. His hair was a matted mess and he needed to be shaved. 'Snow' came to her because the person who owned her couldn’t find a rental that would allow a pet and 'Fluffy' was given away because her teenage owner lost interest after two weeks. But Nadine doesn’t want to warn people off getting a rabbit, she just wants to make sure people go into it with the right attitude. Rabbits are social animals and need company and space, she says. Leaving them in a hutch is not a good option. “Would you leave a cat in a

SPCA animal welfare inspector Jade Bennet says they have 13 rabbits at the moment which is “at capacity”, with a further six

being fostered out. “Sometimes people move to a new house or the kids get bored and they don’t want them anymore,” she says. “We do try to educate people when we are adopting out any animal that the owner is aware of all the animal’s needs and is able to cater for that, so they are not buying on a whim.” On Easter Saturday, the SPCA is hosting an open day to celebrate its new “Bunny Barn” so people can come and learn about owning a rabbit. “It’s all about promoting education.” Nadine says if people are serious about rabbits they should get one from the SPCA. “They are very knowledgeable and it's so much better than buying from a pet shop or breeder.”

Nelson City Council throw music school a lifeline The Nelson City Council has come to the party to bridge a near $1million shortfall for the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts redevelopment. The school’s historic auditorium was closed in December 2013 for earthquake strengthening, with an initial budget of $6.5million. However, the discovery of asbestos and the need for more seismic strengthening

The shortfall of around $900,000 is due to the requirement for much more seismic strengthening work than originally thought and the discovery of asbestos in the building. In order to ensure the construction continues on track for the April opening date,

council has agreed to offer the NCMA an interest-free bridging loan of up to $680,000 while it undertakes further fundraising. NCMA Trust Board chairman Roger Taylor says the loan is a very welcome lifeline that will enable them to complete the restoration project. "As an organization, we truly appreciate that Nelson City Council has taken the

lead in providing the short-term support we need, we now encourage the wider community to follow suit and support our fundraising efforts.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the Nelson School of Music is part of this city’s proud heritage. "The redevelopment project creates a living treasure that our children and grandchildren can be proud of too.”

World’s best photos coming to Nelson Kate Russell An exhibition featuring some of the world's best and most famous photos is coming to Nelson, to transport visitors “behind the lens”. ‘National Geographic: 50 Greatest Photos’ opens at the Nelson Provincial Museum this Saturday, showcasing some of the greatest photo-journalism of the late 20th century. The photographs span a time range from 1965 to 2009, with subjects ranging from environmental issues and international cultures to extraordinary places around the world. From Steve McCurry’s Afghan girl to Michael “Nick” Nichols’s iconic photograph of Jane Goodall and a chimpanzee, to Thomas Abercrombie’s never-before-seen view of Mecca - visitors will learn the stories behind the photos and see videos with behind-the-scenes stories and interviews with the photographers. The exhibition has toured the world extensively for the last 10 years and Nelson is its third stop in New Zealand. Lucinda Blackley-Jimson, chief executive of the Nelson Provincial Museum, says that they are “delighted” to secure such an important exhibition for the region. “This is the first time we have had the opportunity to work with National Geographic, and it’s a natural partnership for us,” she says. “We have an extremely strong local photographic collection, and Nelsonians have always had a passion for photography, from the early days of William and Fred Tyree to F N Jones and Rose Franks.” In addition to seeing the photos

One Plunket, five generations Kate Russell Reporter

In 1964, Phyllis Brown watched her mother open the Stoke Plunket rooms. Fifty-four years on and she is now proudly watching her great-grandson attend the exact same rooms. Five generations of the Brown family have been involved with the Stoke Plunket rooms, located on Main Rd Stoke. Phyllis’s mother, Lady Frances Whitehead (who passed away in 1997) was the wife of Stan Whitehead - the local Member of Parliament at the time, and was asked to officially open the rooms when they were built. At the time, Phyllis was 28-yearsold, a local midwife and also on the fundraising committee for

the building project. Her daughter Jill was one of the first babies to attend the new Stoke Plunket rooms, and years later, in 1982, Jill starting bringing her daughter Casey to the very same spot. Now, Casey is bringing her eightmonth-old son Thomas to Stoke Plunket. Phyllis, who’s had six children go through the rooms, says the building was constructed with mostly volunteer labour and the entire cost of the build was fundraised. “We had bake sales, sausage sizzles, concerts – things like that to raise the money. It was quite an achievement when it was finished and it was a lovely day when it opened.” She says the trip into the Nelson Plunket rooms was too hard for

Photo: Kate Russell. many Stoke mums, and while Plunket did get use of the Stoke Hall, it “wasn’t satisfactory” for the nurse. “Stoke was very quiet in those days so it was a big thing for the area back then. I’ve lived in Stoke all my life, in the same house. Same husband, too.” After it opened, Phyllis says they had to continue fundraising for the upkeep of the building, and to pay the nurse's wages. “There was one Plunket nurse stationed there most of the day. You’d go there and take your

book, they would do the weigh in and give talks on child rearing, feeding and what not - similar to what they still do now. “And it still looks the same now as it did when it opened.” There was also a retired doctor who was based there doing preschool checks. Jill says still she remembers walking Casey down to the rooms in the pram. “I remember it being important to me – a wealth of support and a huge safety net. It was very familiar as a new mum and it was great

to be part of,” she says. Casey now feels a huge sense of pride being able to bring Thomas to the same place that has nurtured so many of her family, and hopes that one day he might even bring his children here. “I think it’s quite rare and special, and to still be providing a service to the community after all this time is pretty cool,” she says. “I think my great-grandmother would be so pleased to know her great-great grandson is attending the rooms she helped to establish.”

‘End of an era’ on Nile St Locally Owned and Operated

After 14 years of business, one of Nelson’s “little gems” is closing its doors at 28 Nile St. Owners of Tula and Niles, Christie Carlson and Larry Rueter, are leaving behind their charming corner of Nelson to start a simpler life in the little West Coast town of Reefton. Selling vintage clothing, jewelry, accessories and collectables, the restored turn-of-the-century Edwardian villa has been an attraction itself, with its parasole-embellished frontage and colourful gardens. And although the American couple “never thought they would leave”, their minds were made up after it was announced that Betts carpark - directly across the road - would be developed into a highend apartment complex. Christie and Larry purchased 28 Nile St in 2002 after “falling in love” with Nelson during a trip to New Zealand. After seeing a 'for sale' sign on the house, they snapped it up and decided to live there and open their little shop.

It had been to auction, but no one wanted it and was set for demolition. “Then we came along and put it on the historic register. It certainly is a piece of Nelson’s history,” says Christie. Christie says that when the Betts

development was given the green light last June, they lost hope. The four-floor apartment building was approved as one of Nelson City Council’s special housing areas and will include 17 “luxury” residences ranging from one-to-three bedroom units. “We fought long and hard for that site to be affordable housing.

I had always envisaged that space as contemporary colonial-style townhouses for medium income families. “But now we are getting these $800k or more ultra-modern apartments that are out of touch with the rest of the street.” Christie says they decided to buy a “little bach somewhere” that

they could escape to, knowing the corner would be a construction site for “some time”. That’s when they took a drive to the West Coast and discovered Reefton. They fell in love with a “doer-upper” complete with a huge section and rimu floors which they purchased for just $195k. “That’s when I thought, I really like it here - let’s sell up. I don't want to own two houses. There’s not one corporate thing in Reefton, and that’s the way we want to live.” Tula and Niles will be closing its doors this Wednesday, 15 March, with all stock selling for rockbottom prices. “We’re selling everything way below cost, but I don’t care – it’s pretty fun,” Christie says. She hints that they may look at opening a business in Reefton but “want to get a feel for what it needs” first. Meanwhile, she says they have sold 28 Nile St to another community-minded couple who are planning on using the space in a “similar fashion”. “I’m so happy it will be in good hands, but it’s definitely the end of an era for us.”

Air show wows onlookers Locally Owned and Operated

Nelson’s eyes were on the sky on Sunday as the Royal New Zealand Air Force aerobatic team performed over Tahunanui. The Black Falcons performed twists, turns and flips in front of a crowded Tahunanui Beach and Rocks Rd, which was the best vantage point to take in the show. However, it could be seen across Nelson.

Black Falcons team member, Squadron Leader Hayden Sheard, says it was a great day all round. “The weather was perfect, and the crowd was awesome. I fly in number four position in the formation nearer to the back, so I can’t really see the crowd but our boss up front said he caught a couple of glimpses of lots of cars lining the road which is pretty cool.” They began with a series of

manoeuvres, which they performed together before breaking off into separate loops rolls and spins. Hayden says when they fly in formation their wing tips are only a few metres apart. “We often travel at speeds of around 400km/ hr, so I spend most of my time watching the other planes when we are in formation. It looks great from the ground.” Two squadron members then

proceeded to play a hair-raising game of ‘chicken’ where they both flew towards each other and then, at the last moment, swung sideways to avoid collision and safely pass one another. “All of our pilots are A-Category which means we’ve been in the Airforce for at least ten years. Four of us were in the Black Falcons last year and one is new to the team this year. He’s an exchange pilot who’s here from

Australia for three years” says Hayden. Another crowd-pleaser was the love heart that was left in the sky by two of the planes’ smoke trails. The five T-6C Texan II aircraft are used to train RNZAF pilots in New Zealand. They are purposebuilt for military training and have the latest technology including ejection seats, collision avoidance and ground awareness warning systems.

Nelson Matters The Nelson region faces a critical crossroad on the decision of our two councils and Waimea landowners over whether to proceed with the Waimea Community Dam. We must back this opportunity to secure better water quality in the Waimea River, the opportunity to grow our successful horticulture industries and to secure the domestic water for much-needed new housing. The debate on this water issue has raged for over a decade. We have spent over $6 million on investigations, consultations, design and consenting. Capable community and industry lead-

ers like Murray King, the late Nick Patterson and now John Palmer have put years of their life into developing this solution. We now need the courage to get on with it. The problem is well-known. We are extracting too much water from the Waimea aquifer and river for irrigation, Nelson and Richmond water supplies and industry during dry summer months. We must either drastically cut everybody’s allowed takes or collectively invest in the infrastructure to store the huge volumes of surplus winter water. There is no perfect way to share the $80 million costs but every-

one needs to contribute. I have worked hard to help secure $40 million in Government support, made up of $8 million in grants, $10 million interest-free loan to council and $22 million on a concessionary loan to irrigators. The new Coalition Government is pulling funding on any future schemes. It will be a tragedy if we lose this Government investment in our region. The Nelson City Council needs to contribute in support of this Tasman District Council project. We city ratepayers draw water from the Roding River that is part of the Waimea catchment.

We are part of the over-extraction problem and need to contribute to the solution. There are also over a thousand Nelson City south residents and businesses that get their water from the TDC supplies from the Waimea. We also need to recognise that we all benefit from our regions successful horticultural exporting industries through the Port dividends to our council and thousands of jobs. If the Waimea Community Dam does not proceed, the negative impact on Nelson jobs will be brutal. Existing water takes will need to be slashed, putting many em-

ployers out of business. I worry for the hundreds of workers at a place like JS Ewers Ltd, many former refugees, who would struggle to get jobs elsewhere. Water is the resource of this century. Our region is incredibly blessed with copious volumes of high quality freshwater. Our biggest problem is having too much in winter and too little in summer. Now is the chance to grasp the opportunity, build the dam and lift our management of this precious resource.

After its successful debut last year, Nelson Beer Week 2018 is gearing up to be another superb experience for beer connoisseurs and craft beer newcomers! "Nelson is the artisan capital of New Zealand and the centre of hop growing, so what better way to celebrate it than having a beer week which showcases the best craft beers around," says event coordinator Craig Boodee. "It’s also a great way to celebrate the end of summer, our regions' amazing cuisine, and all the other cool things our area has to offer. This year, Nelson Beer Week (March 17th to March 25th) has 24 fun, educational, beer-related events taking place across Nelson-Tasman, culminating with the ever-popular Marchfest, which is the big showcase event which attracts close to 4000 people annually." And early indications are, Marchfest could be a sell-out this year, so “if possible, purchase your tickets now to avoid disappointment.” It has been the success of Marchfest (a one day craft beer and music festival), over the past decade, which raised the idea of having Nelson Beer Week. “We wanted to encourage people to come here well in advance of Marchfest to experience all the great restaurants, cafes and breweries in the region, as well as all the awesome things to do here in Nelson, including the wide range of fun, beer-related activities during Nelson Beer Week 2018,” says Craig. In October last year, the organisers got together with local hospitality establishments to discuss ideas for the upcoming week-long event. "It’s been up to individual venues to use their creative license to showcase craft beers. People have done that by trying to match a specific beer style or a brewery for particular food such as a burger or chocolate cake stout, to create different experiences people wouldn’t normally associate with beer." The organising team have also appreciated the "great support from the Nelson Regional Development Agency who have helped with sponsorship funding for the event, as well as previous beer week attendees. Second time round, people are a bit more familiar with what to expect, and the types of events happening over nine days.

Lions Clubs fundraise for shuttle Amy Russ For John Cramond, staying at the Cancer Society’s Daffodil House in Christchurch was a deeply personal journey. Every year approximately 18,000 out-of-town patients, over 6000 of whom come from Nelson/Marlborough, stay at Daffodil House and are transported to and from their cancer-related treatment in the daffodil shuttle. Driven by a team of dedicated people, the daffodil shuttle is a vital service that takes a lot of the stress off patients and their family members. “It is an invaluable service that we cannot do without,” says John. A member of the Motueka Lions Club, John wanted to ensure that the service was available for other people who were away from home and in need of transportation to their treatment. So he called on neighbouring Lions Clubs to join in to support the shuttle service “It is an ongoing cost that will more than likely only increase,” says John. Rallying support from Lions Clubs from Richmond, Nelson, Motueka, Marlborough, West Coast and Mid-Canterbury, together they managed to fund-raise more than

$14,000 towards the annual cost of running the Cancer Society’s daffodil shuttle. Richmond Lions Club president Alex Robertson says that they were keen to contribute to the cause, knowing that not only their members but others in their community had, and will continue to have need of, the shuttle service during some of the hardest times of their lives. “Not only was it a personal project, as we have our own members affected by cancer” says Alex, “but it is a fantastic project and was an easy one to say 'yes' to”. The project took over six months to complete with funds raised through the annual Daffodil Day appeal, sausage sizzles, and selling firewood and new potatoes. Despite this phenomenal effort, Lions Club members describe themselves as ordinary people from all walks of life who enjoy getting together and supporting worthwhile projects such as this one. “We are always on the lookout for new ideas and projects,” says Alex. “We’re always seeking not only for new members, but also helpers.” To find out more about how you can help go to www.lionsclub.org.nz or contact Alex at 027 268 2244

Offering a helping hand through counselling Charles Anderson A new counselling service is hoping that the healing power of groups will help frustrated parents and those feeling like life isn’t going as planned. The group counselling sessions are facilitated by professional Life Linc counsellors who say that groups are an affordable way and opportunity to identify and explore ways to move forward. “They provide a safe and confidential place to explore thoughts and feelings, to deepen contact with oneself and others, to enable changes to be recognised and relationships to develop,” says Alice Robin. One group is focused on helping parents who need assistance in figuring out how to help manage their children. “It’s looking at parenting and what presses their buttons or makes them, and gives them tools to manage themselves better. The other group is for those who feel stuck in life. The Nelson Bowling Club Speight’s Premier Fours will see some of the country’s top bowlers battle it out for the inaugural title, as well as the $10,000 first prize money that comes with it – being the biggest fours winner's cheque in New Zealand. Organiser Richard Collett says the tournament will be a first for Nelson which will not only bring top quality bowlers to the region but will give Nelson’s best local talent the opportunity to play in this prestigious event where they can gauge their own abilities against the best. A late change of plan paid off in the best possible fashion for Nelson-based speedster Lucy Sheat at the national track and field championships in Hamilton over the weekend. The 18-year-old sprinter, who has qualified at 100 and 200m for the world under-20 champs later in the year, originally thought she was compelled to compete in the under-20 events at Porritt Stadium as a selection trial for the worlds. However, she sought dispensation from Athletics NZ to compete at senior level in the national 200m and was given permission to take on the older runners. Her late decision proved solid gold, Lucy beating a high-class field to claim her first national senior crown. "It was a late decision, but I’m definitely pleased we made it … it just made sense to give it a crack,” says Lucy. "We just wanted to get some good conditions and strong competition. "It was a challenge … I knew it was going to be a really good field who would push me.” They certainly did, but not hard enough to stop her claiming the prestigious 200m gold, her third medal of the championships to go with another gold in the under-20 100m and a silver in the

Ruan resigned on February 27 just prior to the Newman Shield final. The Nelson Pine Griffins went on to win the final by 72 runs and retain the Newman Shield. He steps down after eight months at the helm of the Griffins. NCA CEO David Leonard says Ruan did not give details on why he chose to relinquish the reigns. "There are probably a number of reasons but there was nothing specific given.” NCA are currently accepting applications for a successor which will close next Friday. Ruan has moved back to the United Kingdom with his family and was unavailable for comment. "Ruan did a good job, he moved his family and relocated to New Zealand. From pain to Kaiteriteri Gold glory Jonty Dine Barbara Spencer couldn’t walk a single kilometre last year without debilitating pain. The Nelson woman had suffered through a fifth prolapsed disc in 2017, but made a vow to regain her freedom. Barbara connected with personal trainer Denis Cooper after being encouraged to enter in the 10km walk at Kaiteriteri Gold. Barbara completed the walk on Saturday, crossing the finish arm in arm with her ‘daughter out-law’ Francesca Harris. “This time last year I would have been lucky to walk 2km,” Barbara says. But thanks to Denis’ training regime and Francesca’s support, the duo conquered the 10km course in 1 hour 31 minutes and 14 seconds. “The last hill was tough work, my back is OK, but my calves are feeling it.” Barbara says the walk was a doddle for the “young gun” Francesca but walking alone would not have been nearly as much fun. “I was there to support her, keep pace for her and talk lots to take her mind off the hills,” Francesca says. Barbara’s elation was written all over her face as she reflected on her journey to the finish. “It was really special to see how happy she was as she crossed the finish line and she far exceeded her expectations as far as how she felt and the time she did it in.” Francesca says after all the work Barbara does in her community, she thoroughly deserves all accolades. Barbara volunteers for the Nelson Hospice looking after terminal patients. She was a key part of making the mosaic couch on Days Track, and runs a mosaicking course for with a group of visually impaired people and op shop volunteers. “Barbara is so generous looking af-

"So I was really proud to see her achieve something so special for herself.” Despite a change in course for the 2018 event, it was a similar result as veteran long-distance runner Phil Costley won his eighth-consecutive title in the half marathon. Phil won the half marathon with a time of 1 hour 14 minutes 58 seconds, almost a full three minutes ahead of his nearest rival. The 48-year-old set the course record in 2012 with a time of 1 hour 8 minutes and 59 seconds. Making it two wins for Nelson, Trevor Voyce claimed gold in the 10km in 38 minutes and 15 seconds while Paula Canning was the first female across the finish line, finishing the 10km in 41 minutes 31 seconds. There were a record number of entrants for the 28th annual event with more than 500 runners ranging from 12 to 70-years-old. Event director Greg Dykzeul says for the first time in the event’s history the number of female runners outnumbered the men by 3-2. "We are seeing an evolution with these events being supported by a lot more by women which is fantastic.” The course had to undergo a late change with the usual route around Sandy Bay Hill inaccesible due to Cyclone Gita. Runners set out toward Riwaka, through Kaiteriteri and Marahau, toward Split Apple Rock before turning around and finishing on the golden sands of Kaiteriteri Beach. "We still had the traditional hills of Kaiteriteri Gold and because it’s a new course everybody got a record.” Of the 500 runners, 200 competed in the half marathon and 300 in the 10km. "It was a special day and we look forward to another 28 years of Kaiteriteri Gold,” Greg says.

The Nelson competition table toppers pipped Wakatu Cricket Club by 65 runs at Victory Square on Saturday. Batting first, the visitors set an imposing 274 for 7, led by skipper Brendan Hodgson’s unbeaten 131-ball century. The wicket-keeper batsman struck 14 fours and two towering sixes, bringing up his first century of the season off the penultimate ball of the first innings. "I left it a bit late, but I just rode my luck a bit and managed to get there in the end," Brendan says. Earlier in the innings, Patrick Howes fell just short of three figures, dismissed for 92 off only 93 deliveries. "Patty played some knock, I didn’t realise he was on so many when he got out, he probably could have pushed on for 150, he looked superb." Symon Carr then finished the

first fifty in style by putting one over the rope to end on a handy strike rate of 600. Wakatu struggled early in reply and found themselves four down with only 30 on the board after 8 overs. Wickets continued to fall with Ili Tugaga acting as chief destroyer, claiming a hat-trick to end the chase in emphatic fashion. lli took 5-27 of 7.3 overs, mopping up the tail by castling the last three batsmen in consecutive deliveries. The competition's premier wicket taker now has 17 scalps for the season. Daniel Hooper brought some respectability to the scorecard for the home team, ending unbeaten on 73. Stoke/Nayland came into the round 10 fixture on 29 points, six clear of second-placed Waimea Toi Toi United in the Nelson Car Company 50 over competition. The win also sees them closer to the Marlborough Falcons in the Kelvin Scoble Trophy. Stoke/Nayland will play Athletic College Old Boys and Waimea Toi Toi in the final two games of

the round robin and will look to secure their spot in the final at Saxton Oval on March 31. In other Kelvin Scoble Trophy results Nelson College travelled to Horton Park in Blenheim to take on competition leaders, the Marlborough Labour Hire Dolphins, in a low scoring affair. Batting first, Nelson College set a sub-par total of 135 all out with Josh Simpson one of only three batsmen to reach double figures with 52. The hosts then struggled their way to 139-9 to take the win with more than 13 overs to spare. On the other side of the park, former All Black fullback Leon Macdonald notched a ton in his side’s comfortable 121-run win over Nelson club ACOB. The Tasman Mako coach slammed 12 fours and three sixes as his side posted 252-8. In reply, ACOB were dismissed for 131 in the 36th over. Spinner Matt Stretch was the main destroyer, grabbing 5-23. In the final match of the round, Waimea Toi Toi United defeated traditional rivals Wanderers CC at Jubilee Park .
