Helicopter New Zealand is pulling its remaining helicopters out of Nelson, disrupting four jobs and shifting the company’s head-

quarters into the CBD. Nelson has been the offshore Asia-Pacfic base for HNZ since 1962 and provides chartered flights, support to oil rigs, and transport to and from scientific expeditions to Antartica. However, after hitting the mid

point in their lease, international executive vice president Keith Mullet says the time was right to make some changes. HNZ will move its management team of around 40 people from the former Origin Pacific airlines terminal into a soon-to-be devel-

oped Halifax St office in the heart of Nelson. The remaining eight contracted helicopters that fly in and out of the Nelson hangar will be moved to HNZ’s New Plymouth base where the majority of the HNZ fleet are already situated.

Kelvin by my side, our family and grandchildren were there and I wasn’t nervous at all, it was a lot of fun.” Rosie says they’ve been inseparable ever since they were set up by family members for a school reunion when Rosie was 13 and Kelvin was 16. “Kelvin made quite an impression, we stuck together like glue that night and nothing has changed.” Saturday’s service was a reflection of the couple’s marriage, filled with family and good humour. When exchanging rings, Rosie gifted Kelvin with a Rescue Wood 4 golf club instead of a ring, announcing that Kelvin had been having an affair during their marriage -

an affair with golf. The congregation chuckled as she vowed to not be jealous or trying to change him, with Kelvin announcing, “It’s better than a ring!” Although they can’t say they never argued, the couple agree the secret to a good marriage is humour, sharing, and letting the other person be themselves. “It’s all about sharing,” says Kelvin. “mixing things up, doing things together and letting the other one do what they want to do.” Surrounded by their family, on the same day and at the same place, five decades later, they stood together on the church steps looking forward to many decades more.

land’s decision to withdraw from the airport. “They could’ve stayed but they’ve chosen to go and that’s absolutely fine, it just means there’s an opportunity for someone else.” The former Origin Pacific Airlines terminal, offices and hangar are owned by HNZ, however Nelson Airport own the land so HNZ are negotiating the sale of the building to Nelson Airport. “The discussions are ongoing but we are definitely interested in buying the building,” says Rob. “It won’t be a part of the redevelopment as we have already finalised it, but we will look at getting new tenants in the building.”

Honoured for helping those at Hospice Charles Anderson When Mary Garner first started working for Nelson Tasman Hospice 30 years ago there were only six volunteers. Now there are more than 400. She arrived in 1987, when the hospice began, to take over coordinating volunteers. It was a time when the hospice movement was still in its infancy. “We had everything for people coming into this world but nothing for people going out of it,” Mary says. So she started with a “blank canvas” in caring for those who were dying. “I knew some of the basic services I wanted but a lot it came from really good people who turned up and just offered their help.” Mary has now been recognised for her work by being made a Companion of the Queen's Service Order, as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Since 2002, the hospice has recorded more than 8,000 volunteer referrals and her contributions have left “an enduring positive impact on the local community,” according to her citation. She says the Nelson Tasman

Mary Garner has been made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for her work with the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Hospice is now an integral part of the community and volunteers are essential to its mission. “I think everybody should be a volunteer - it gives something back to the community.” Volunteers are involved in everything from life story writing, massage, hairdressing and building wheelchair ramps. “It’s good for the soul to volunteer,” Mary says. Dr Lesley Rhodes was made also a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her work with the Cawthron Institute and “revolutionising the

management of marine algal blooms and biotoxins in shellfish”. Bernadette Gavin, of Nelson, was made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for advocating for gender equality for more than 40 years. There were also several local recipients of the Queen's Service Medal. Dave Hansford, of Moutere, was recognised for his work advocating for the environment through various media for many years. Barry Pomeroy was recognised for his work with Returned Service Associations across the region, including playing the bugle at ANZAC Day parades and services from 1954 until 2006. Julian Shields was recognised for setting up the Nelson branch of Habitat for Humanity in 1995, a worldwide notfor-profit organisation which aims to build houses for families in need. Karen Stade was recognised for her service to local history - which included her involvement in the Nelson Historical Society and her work creating exhibitions and book projects on local communities and people.

Mother’s grief tamed by son’s gift of life Charles Anderson Camilla Edstrom was driving from her home in Cable Bay when she received the phone call. Her son Oliver had been in an accident. It appeared he had fallen while at the beach in Auckland’s Herne Bay. He hit his head and had not been found for 10 minutes. “I was in a daze,” Camilla says. “Then the tears came.” But before she had even arrived at Auckland Hospital she had a feeling. “I knew he would not come back. I had a sense.” Oliver Lynch, 31, was born and raised in Nelson, he went to Nayland College before studying at South Seas Film School. After working in the United States he had become a cinematographer working on National Oliver Lynch. Geographic productions. He had been nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his work on two such shows. The accident occurred more than two years ago, but Camilla remembers that the first thing she told doctors was that she wanted him to be a donor. Little did she know that her son already was.

Camilla says each of us have a deep desire to be beneficial. “If you can, why wouldn’t you?” There are more than 550 people waiting for an organ or tissue transplant, according to Janice Langlands of Organ Donation New Zealand. Some of those people will die waiting, while others will continue to lead lives restricted by long-term treatment. She says people of all ages can be considered for donation.

“Very few medical conditions will prevent a person from being able to donate any organs or tissues,” Janice says. But New Zealand still has a relatively low rate of organ donation. After a day, doctors told Camilla that Oliver was brain dead. There would be no recovery. So Camilla said goodbye to her son while he was still on a ventilator to keep his heart beating and his organs preserved until they could be

transplanted. “It was horrible and tragic but knowing that he has helped someone has been such a comfort,” she says. “You are not your organs. You have organs but you are not your organs.” Soon after Oliver’s death Camilla received a letter saying that two men had been given Oliver’s liver and kidneys. One wrote to her saying how he was the sole provider for his family and Oliver’s

donation had allowed him to keep doing that. He had also been able to go to his grandchildrens’ school production. “I just thought that was so fantastic,” Camilla says. “I was so grateful Oly was still of benefit.” She says it is important to have a conversation with loved ones about death and organ donation before it is too late. “We don’t talk about it nearly as much as we should.” She says Oliver was charismatic, warm and playful. But he also had a wild streak and loved to dance. Sometimes she laughs thinking whether those two men are often struck with the compulsion to get up and start grooving - just because they have a bit of her son in them. “That makes me smile,” Camilla says. She had a memorial ceremony at Cable Bay soon after Oliver died. They sprinkled ashes but also kept some to lay at Wharariki Beach and up in Auckland. “Oliver is everywhere now,” Camilla says. Fifteen year old Crusoe Jones is not your typical teenager, he spends his spare time diving toward concrete, jumping between objects, flipping off platforms, and has been named New Zealand’s Under 17 Parkour Champion. The Nayland College student says he loved parkour and free running instantly and has been throwing flips and tricks for the last five years. “[Free runners] have a different vision, we see obstacles as pathways. It’s all about freedom of movement, pushing the limits, and getting that flow.” But while he may be experienced at fearlessly defying gravity, Jamzac, New Zealand’s national parkour and free running championship, was his first taste of competition. Crusoe admits he was nervous for the Anzac weekend competition

at the Flow Academy of Motion in Auckland. “I was pretty nervous, I’d never been to the Flow Academy before and everyone else was really good, I had no expectations.” Crusoe competed against a field of twenty free runners and tracers but came out on top, winning the under 17 speed and style sections as well as a special award for Youth Best Trick with his spontaneous ‘dive cat to slide’. His now-signature move, the dive cat to slide, involves diving from one high platform to another 2.5 metres away, threading his legs through his arms, and then sliding down a tiny plank of wood on the other side of the second platform. “I figured out that I might do it when I was jamming on the first day, but if I did I wanted to save it for the finals. I stayed awake most of that night trying to decide whether I should throw it or not. “On the day I hesitated for a spit

second then just decided to commit, vaulting to the other platform and somehow I stuck it.” Crusoe says he still can’t believe he is the national under-17 champion. “It is amazing, it was my first competition so I just went along to test the waters, so when I won it took a long time for the results to sink in, I still think it’s crazy, I’m just a dude from Nelson who loves doing flips.” While Jamzac was Crusoe’s first parkour and free running competition, he says he’s got the competition bug and is looking out for more events. “I definitely want to keep competing, parkour is a relatively new sport in New Zealand but if any competitions pop up, I’ll be there.” In the meantime you’ll catch him running, diving, jumping and flipping around the city’s parks, schools, and skateparks, or training at Gymnastics Nelson each weekend.

“She’s never short of company.” Jeanette and her family were so pleased when they discovered Summerset serviced apartments. NEW CITIZENS: Thirty-two Nelsonians are set to become New Zealand citizens at a ceremony tomorrow morning. The Citizenship ceremony will take place at the Nelson City Council chambers on Wednesday. There will be 32 people becoming citizens, representing a diverse mix of nationalities including: American, Belgian, Czech, British, British South African, Filipino, German, Indian, Malaysian, Myanmari, Nepalese, Samoan, and Taiwanese. They will be welcomed by the Mayor, Councillor Ian Barker and Kaumātua Andy Joseph. After committing themselves to bear allegiance, they will be given a native plant to commemorate the occasion and served morning tea. Nelson encouraged to get behind Matariki celebrations Kate Russell Victory is preparing for what is set to be their biggest Matariki celebrations yet, but the goodwill of the Nelson community is required to help keep the popular event alive. This is ninth year the Victory Community Centre has run the event, but it is also the first year they have ever had to ask an entry fee. It will be held next Wednesday night, and they are asking a $1 entry fee per person to help cover the costs of what organiser Gareth Cashin describes as a “huge” event. They also need volunteers to help out on the night, including drummers and fire performers. “Next year will be big, being our tenth celebrations, but we really need the community to get behind us to keep it going that far,” he says. Nicola Bare, from the centre, adds that even just a donation of what people can afford would be greatly appreciated. Victory Primary School pupils will be kicking off the night with a performance, and as always, free hot soup and rolls will be on offer before the lantern walk up the Railway Reserve, which will come to life with drummers, fire performers, artwork and the famous ‘neon zone’.

Roadworks around Tahunanui are set to kick off tomorrow, and drivers are advised to be patient. Contractors will be resurfacing State Highway 6 along Annesbrook Dr and Rocks Rd throughout June, with work starting tomorrow from Manchester Way to just north of Blackwood St, through to Friday June 16, weather permitting. NZTA say that work will be done in sections, commencing at the southern end and taking a total of nine shifts, with no work being done on Sunday, June 11. Crews will be setting up after the morning busy traffic peak from approximately 9am through to approximately 10pm at night, with work halting during the afternoon commuter traffic peak between 4 – 6pm. NZTA regional performance manager, Mark Owen says extra travel time should be factored in while this work is underway. Then, from Monday, June 19 to Thursday, June 29, crews will start work on resurfacing Rocks Rd. Crews will be working at night from 30 metres south of Basin Reserve to 200 metres north of the Richardson St intersection, with work expected to take 10 shifts. Mark says that work will start at 7pm each night and finish by 7am in the morning and no work will be done on Saturday night, June 24.

The car parks were full and books were flying off the tables, as Nelsonians braved the cold weather during the opening weekend of the Founders Annual Book Fair. The much-loved event opened its gates on Saturday morning, and has been humming ever since with book lovers, collectors, buyers and volunteers. And, once again, notorious book fair enthusiast Tim Skinner was one of the first through the gates. “I come here early every year,” says Tim. “Me and my mate Alistair have had a race for the last seven or eight years, so I was at the gate at 7am. He beat me to the gate, but I was the first through the door, flicking through all the collectors' books. “It’s a bit of a laugh, but we always walk away with some great collectors' books about Nelson, and then I’ll head to the bike and the kids sections and go find some Tintin and Asterix books for my kid," he adds. “This event is awesome, there is, like, 100,000 books here, people come all the way from Timaru to look through the books and

numbers. “There have been lots and lots of people and we have received so much good feedback so far,” she says.

“The best selling books so far have been the ones we received more donations of, particularly science fiction and art – they have been big sellers and we’re only down to

a few boxes of art books now.” The Founders Annual Book Fair runs daily from 10am - 4:30pm until Sunday 11 June. Entry is $2 per day, or $5 for a 9-day pass.

Go-ahead for city apartments

An artist’s impression of the new apartments that are to be built on the Betts car park site on the corner of Trafalgar Square and Nile St. Resource consent for the 17 apartments has been granted by Nelson City Council and work is due to start in August.

Kate Russell Nelson’s newest inner-city apartments opposite the Cathedral have been given the green light and are already selling fast. Resource consent for 17 apartments has been approved for Bett’s Corner, on the corner of Trafalgar Square and Nile St, with building expected to commence this August. It is the first of Nelson City Council’s special housing area (SHA) developments to proceed. Bett’s Corner syndicate spokesman Craig Dennis says demand for the apartments has been strong with 11 already sold, to mainly Nelson buyers. Designed by Arthouse Architects, the one, two and three-bedroom apartments range in price from $760,000 to $1.8 million. “No two apartments are the same, which helps make this such a bespoke architectural project,” says Craig. “There’s been overwhelming demand for penthouses, which have all sold.” Craig says pre-construction pricing for the remaining six apartments is available only until the end of June, through Bayleys Nelson. The development, which will be built by local company Scott Construction, also incorporates a private, landscaped, shared green space. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says, as the first of the special housing projects, it is “gratifying” to see the success of the concept. “Together with other housing developments underway, it will help bring new life and energy to the city,” she says.

Students' ideas to get kids into sport Locally Owned and Operated

Judene Edgar Competitive dodgeball, parkour, circus skills, sport photography and phone apps were just some of the pitches made by students in the Dragon’s Den-style session at Sport Tasman’s inaugural Youth Speak Sport Summit last Thursday. Around 30 ‘non sporty to semi-sporty’ Year 9 and 10 student leaders from Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough schools attended the Summit at Saxton Field which was aimed at gathering youth insights and perspectives around how to encourage youth in sport and active recreation. Sport Tasman’s Lesley McIntosh says that in addition to encouraging participation, another key aim of the Summit was for it “to be facilitated by young people for young people and enhance leadership skills in the younger generation, and give youth a voice”. Youth councillors from Murchison and Nelson helped organise the day and were

The day included a series of workshops and talks from five-time Adventure Racing World Champion Nathan Fa’avae and 16 year old Billy Dravitzki who broke his back in a mountainbike crash late last year, on the themes of sport in school, club sport and community recreation. Teams worked together to choose the top six pitches and then had 3 minutes to present to judges Lani Evans

from Tasman District Council, Holly Drummond from Volunteer Nelson, Pam Brodie from Nelson Bays Volleyball and Billy. Competitive dodgeball won the day with the winning pitch from Lochie Quigley from Nelson College and Louie Morris from Motueka High School. “Who doesn’t like throwing a ball at someone you don’t like”, says Lochie. It was “realistic, achievable, cost-effective and something young people

like already”, says Lani. “It is accessible to all, which is really important, and schools wouldn’t have to get any specialised equipment or facilities”. The Special Prize, as decided by the youth councillors, was awarded to Milan Chapman and Lucy Chung from Motueka High School for their website/mobile phone app idea “to help people find events, sports and how to get into a sport”, says Milan. “We usually rely on school notices but often miss things”, says Lucy. “This is aimed at a generation where everything is online”. Second prize went to Georgina Palmer from Waimea College and Chris Davis from Motueka High School for their ‘parkour park’ idea and third prize to Poppy Ellis and Elyse Hopkins from Golden Bay for their ‘circus skills in schools’ concept. “We’re really lucky that we got funding from the Rata Foundation to provide this Summit”, says Lesley. “It was a really valuable learning activity for everyone involved”.

Port Nelson up for Green Ribbon award Port Nelson has been named a finalist in the 2017 Green Ribbon Awards for its innovative QuayConnect freight logistics model. They are up for an award in the ‘Resilience to Climate Change’ category for their success in reducing fuel consumption and energy use across the company. Port Nelson established QuayConnect in February 2016, working with trucking company Central Express Ltd and two freight customers, glass bottle manufacturer O-I New Zealand and wine bottler WineWorks Marlborough. Over the first year of operation they have transformed wine freight logistics across the top of the South Island, reducing truck journeys by more than half between Nelson and Marlborough, which has cut the time trucks are on the road by 10,000 hours. In total, they saved an impressive 348,436 litres of fuel and 1,602 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in its first year. Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne says being named a finalist out of close to 150 nominations is a “great honour”. “The introduction of QuayConnect is in line with the Port company’s ethos to continually seek to reduce the impact of its activities on the local and global environment and, in 2007, we became the first port in New Zealand to receive ISO14001 accreditation for continuous improvement in environmental management,” says Martin. “As part of this sustainable approach to doing business, we could see a clear opportunity to reduce the impact the wine transport sector was having on the environment in the top of the South, as could our project partners. “Making such a significant difference to the wine sector’s transport energy output within QuayConnect’s first year has been hugely rewarding. QuayConnect has surpassed its targets and we’re looking forward to seeing the environmental benefits this model will have over the long term.” The Ministry for the Environment’s highly regarded Green Ribbon Awards recognise outstanding contributions by individuals, communities and organisations to protect and manage New Zealand’s environment. Winners will be announced this Thursday at a formal awards ceremony at Parliament.

Jacob Page Nathan Smith is used to hitting the long ball and now he wants to make a comeback. The 39-year-old spontaneously ended a six year hiatus from the New Zealand long driving scene to claim fifth at the New Zealand Long Drive Championships at Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch. He had eight balls to hit as far as he could in three minutes. “I’ve always been able to hit the ball a reasonable distance but one of the guys I was training with in Canada in 2008 said I should give this a go. “There is nothing better than hitting a good [ball] and just knowing it and crushing it. “I only found out about the [New Zealand] event two months ago so I hit the gym for a month-and-a-half, which wasn’t quite enough.” Nathan says it was a cold, miserable day for the event which meant cold air and damp fairways curtailed the lengthy drives anticipated. “It was so cold we were asking the coffee guy for a cup of hot water each time just to get the feeling back in our fingers.” Nathan says long driving “wrecks your normal golf ". “A normal swing speed for me is 115mph, whereas in long drives you have to get it up to 135-140mph and the injuries that come with it in terms of neck, back and shoulders are a worry," he says. “There’s nothing strange about snapping a shaft in practice because there’s so much force being generated.” Nathan stepped away from the sport in 2011 to focus on family, but finishing fifth in New Zealand with 268m, 282m and 279m, has peaked his interest in a return. Nathan says he will hit the gym hard this week in an effort to trim down, bulk up and get his swing rotation back before he targets an invitational event in Remuera in November.

Renowned for being tough, little Biddy of the Buller goldfields still kept the whare she shared with her companions spotless, and wore a sunhat and snow-white apron over her working boots.

Doing well, their winnings tended to disappear at the local pubs however, and it was back to the diggings. Outliving her companions, Biddy retired to Reefton on Dick Seddon’s ‘old age pension’. She died in 1899, aged 86.

“We’d been training for a year but we were still learning. “We’ve been self taught largely ever since and to win this (trophy) it means a lot to all the girls, but especially those of us who have been there from the start.” Fay says she believes the stereotyping of the sport prevented it from growing in numbers more rapidly but the team was keen to change the minds of those who are sceptical. “We aren’t a bunch of rough girls who go out there to try to deliberately hurt other people,” she says. “There are a number of rules and it takes a lot of skill.” Fay says many of the team are mothers and simply enjoy the sport for what it is. The Sirens look set to play the Wellington Convicts later this month.

The 34-year-old South African who is currently playing for the Southern Kings in South Africa, has chosen to be with his wife while she is pregnant and the Tasman Rugby Union has agreed an early release was the best decision for all invoved. Runners and walkers to help schools Simon Bloomberg Eighty-seven schools, kindergartens and playcentres are set to be the big winners in the Nelson Half Festival of Running after a new initiative was announced by event organiser Athletics Nelson. The popular running and walking event over 2.5km, 5km, 10km and 21.1km will be based at Saxton Field on November 5. Athletics Nelson announced that entrants in this year’s event can nomi-

nate a school in the region which will receive up to half of their entry fee as a donation. The scheme is being promoted by champion distance runner and Nelson College teacher Phil Costley who says he has “never encountered such an event which gives back to the local community in so many ways”. Phil will be contacting 87 schools, kindergartens and playcentres throughout the region with an information pack over the

coming weeks to help them promote the event within their schools and throughout the community. Phil says the funds raised could provide for a wide range of uses from books and sports equipment to camp subsidies or travel funds. He says entries have already started flowing in and the schools are already starting to accumulate funds. Runners can prepare for the event by following a fitness programme designed

by Academy of Distance Running coach Greg Lautenslager. Competitors can get some race experience and meet other runners and walkers at 10km events from the Sprig and Fern in Brightwater on September 2 and Mapua on September 30, and the weekly 5km series from the Turf Hotel in Stoke in October. For the first time in their storied National Basketball League history, the Nelson Giants will be retiring two singlets to honour the contributions of key players. The presentation with be done during a Heritage Night celebrations during the Mike Pero Nelson Giants’ final home game of the season against the Wellington Saints at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday. Just who the players are who will have their numbers retired will remain a mystery right up until the ceremony happens, but Giants general manager Janie Granger says the organisation is keen to have as many past or present Giants players, coaches, administrators and supporters as possible at the game to create a real atmosphere. Former Giants coach Matt Ruscoe, who filled the post from 1990 to 1993 when the Nelson national league team

became the Giants, will be attending, as will former guard/captain player Chris Simpson. “We are really keen to have as many people here as possible for the night and I know there are plenty of people still out there who have had an involvement in the Giants over the years and we would really like to see them all there.” There will be a chance to catch up prior to the game where the 2017 Giants face the title favourite Saints for the final time. Head coach Brendon Bailey says a heritage night with two retired singlets is long overdue. “I know, for the two guys that are getting their (singlets) retired, they’ve been long-serving people and, for me, to have played and

the start of the Mitre 10 Cup campaign. Tima took his chances given to him by injuries to other players in the Makos and the preseason departure of Zac Guildford. He impressed enough to make the New Zealand Under-20s squad for 2017 along with fellow Tasman player Will Jordan. Tima was on the bench for New Zealand’s second match of the campaign against the Italians on Monday [NZ time] while Will earned his first start.
