Jonty Dine After a 134 years, Nelson College for Girls will allow students to wear long pants to school. The decision has been described as a major win for the LGBTQ community. Sarah Eynon and Katie Greenaway are the co-leaders of GALS, (Girls Alliance of LGBTQ and Straights), and have been at the forefront in the fight for their right to wear pants. The seventeen-year olds say it has been a long process. The idea was initially proposed to principal Cathy Ewing. Then students completed a survey to students before it was put before the school board. “Happily, they saw it as a good addition to the uniform,” Katie says. Katie and Sarah say the change was for students who didn’t feel comfortable with the gender restrictions of having to wear a skirt all the time. Katie says there was very little resistance and they were quite overwhelmed by the support.

Stoke has spoken and a controversial liquor store application has been withdrawn after hundreds of objections from local authorities and community members. The Black Bull Liquor chain has backtracked on its plans to open a bottle store on Songer St after 205 objections were made to Nelson City Council last month, including a petition with 112 signatures. In April, Nelson Weekly reported that, if approved, it would be the seventh off-license liquor store within a 1.5 km radius. Among the objectors were churches, schools, neighbourhood support groups, a GP, Nelson Grey power and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. NMDHB alcohol licensing officer Carol McIntosh wrote that the application demonstrated “insufficient knowledge of the environment surrounding the proposed premises”. “An additional off-licence would provide increased access to alcohol increasing the likelihood of harm in this community.” Nelson Police also objected, saying that in the past year there had been 151 calls

St Barnabas Anglican Church wrote that it already had problems with ‘alcoholic squatters’ in its grounds. “The Black Bull has aggressive pricing and will only make alcohol more readily available to these people,” the church’s submission said. Many Stoke residents also objected, referring to the density of alcohol outlets in the area and the proximity of the proposed
location to schools, parks and community buildings. “For heaven’s sake, please no more liquor outlets in Stoke,” wrote Ray Wishart. “There is an increasing law and order problem in the suburb and those of us who live there have no desire to see this increased,” added Bev Humphreys. Ron Collings, a resident at the Stoke Retirement Village, wrote that they already experience beer

The future of the Tahuna Holiday Park is in good hands after the Nelson City Council stepped in to assist in its governance, according to a camp board member. Last week, the Nelson Weekly revealed that the council has stepped in to help the camp after its cafe was found to have lost $250,000 in the last two years. It also was more than $900,000 in debt, largely on the back of a $1.3 million loan that the council granted the Tahuna Camp Incorporated Society several years ago. The council appointed a business adviser to the society to ensure “the ongoing viability and sustainability of the camp”, as well as ensuring it complies with its governance obligations. The council, which owns the land, also only just renewed the society’s lease for a year – a week out from the lease expiring. However, society board member Eric Davy says everything is under control.

The reason for the loan was to upgrade some of the infrastructure and camp facilities that were run down and needed replacing. “It’s a weird situation where we borrow from the council to upgrade the infrastructure of the camp, which they own.” He says that communication with the council had been “difficult” due to staff changes there, but now everything was on track. Eric says that the café, which was haemorrhaging money, has been shut down and they are looking for new tenants to run it, along with the adjacent conference centre. “The camp board is very disappointed that the cafe wasn’t

showing a return that we hoped for.” But he also says that the society has more than $400,000 in the bank. Eric says that both the camp board and the council agreed that a business adviser was needed to ensure the camp worked towards its strategic plan that was approved three years ago. The camp proposed turning it into more a resort-style destination over the course of 20 years. “Rather than a place to erect a tent,” says Eric. He says that the future of the camp is in good hands. “Everything that was causing some of the grief has been rectified.”

Peter Goodman says his contribution to the community seemed small compared to all the people he had worked with over the years. “This award doesn’t make me perfect. You get these things and other people have always done more than you have.” He joined the Nelson Garrison Brass Band in 1953 and in 2014 was made a Life Member of Nelson City Brass. For decades he has contributed his time to teaching young musicians and conducting in Putaruru and Nelson. He led the organising committee for the 1997 Regional Brass Band contest in Nelson. He has been a member of the Nelson North Lions since 1984, holding various offices including president. Through his involvement with the Lions Club he has been instrumental in driving a number of community projects. Peter says he has been part of some “quality teams” over the years and the award is in recognition of that. “It’s been a pleasure working with them for a common goal … working to make the community a better place.”

Scoop the poop. It sounds like a simple enough task, but Nelson City Council says that not enough local dog owners are doing it. Dog control officers will be out in force this month, cracking down on those who aren’t picking up after their dogs in public places, and rewarding those who are. They will be giving away free coffee vouchers to responsible owners who are seen carrying their doggy-doo bags, but
those who aren’t will face a warning or even a $300 fine - although they will get a free bag for future use. The council’s team leader regulatory services, Brent Edwards, says the promotion has been timed to run alongside dog registration month and is a response to an increase in complaints to council about the amount of dog poop around the city. “More people are contacting us who are unimpressed and there is also more community awareness. Dog ownership in Nelson is increasing every year.” He says one of the worst ‘poop’
areas is the Boulder Bank, which has become a popular dog exercise area. “Some people see it as acceptable in some areas if they see others doing it, so this is an opportunity to talk to people who aren’t doing the right thing and reward those who already are.” The coffee vouchers are for two local cafes - River Kitchen and The Beach Cafe in Tahunanui. Brent says that both cafes are popular destinations for dog walkers and are supporting the initiative. “It’s a way of saying thanks to dog walkers who are keeping our pathways,
environment and rivers clean.” Councillor Brian McGurk, who is co-chair of the council’s planning and regulatory committee, says that dog poop left on the pavement, pathway or grassy areas is both unpleasant and hazardous for other walkers. “It’s also a pollution issue, as bacteria from dog faeces can be washed into rivers during rain or flood events,” he says. “By picking up your dog’s poop, you are making a great contribution to the health of our rivers, streams and beaches - plus, it’s the decent thing to do.”
“It was actually a lot simpler than we thought it would be, we were ready to fight for it, but we seem to be at a point where people agreed it was necessary.” Sarah says a lot of the students said, even though they would not personally wear them, the majority wanted to see pants as an option for other students. “It’s 2018, so everyone should have the option to wear pants or a skirt and it’s great that the school has agreed.” The first call for a uniform reform was made by former GALS leader Sophie Standford in 2017. Katie says even though Sophie won’t get to wear the pants, she is happy that she helped pave the way for other students to wear them. “We understand that there are kids in the school that don’t identify as female, we wanted to offer an option to make them feel a little more comfortable.” They say it feels like a major win for GALS. “It feels unbelievable and the school has been so awesome, never once did we feel like this was a bad idea.” Katie says she will be wearing the pants once they arrive, but Sarah says they don’t suit her very well.

Homelessness on rise in Nelson Jonty Dine Reporter

The number of homeless people living in Nelson has nearly doubled in the past decade. This startling statistic illustrates a need for action and a local group has been delving into the complexities of the issue in a bid to reduce these numbers. The Male Room, a Nelson based men’s support and advocacy service, presented their findings at Nelson City Council on Wednesday morning. A number of local volunteers, charities and organisations gathered to discuss barriers and solutions to the national crisis. According to the University of Otago, which analysed the census data from 2013, more than 40,000 people were homeless in 2016. This includes those living rough, in emergency housing or living in substandard garages. The report, called “The Word from the Street” explored the experiences of 35 local homeless men living in Nelson and their backgrounds, as well as their hopes for the future. It said that drugs and mental health were prominent factors in creating the homeless popula-

Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says homelessness is a complex issue and it is the moral responsibility of us all to address it. “We have never had it on this scale before.” She says we are a nation that prides itself as pioneers of welfare, and that Nelson ranks just below Auckland and Wellington in having experienced the biggest increase in homeless numbers since 2006. During the period, the number of homeless people in Nelson has
risen from 242 to 417. There are 78 families experiencing accommodation hardship. “We are determined to make changes.” Of the 142 houses the government has committed to building throughout New Zealand, Nelson will see seven new Housing NZ houses. Rachel says, while this is a start, it will require considerable community collaboration to house these people, a challenge Rachel is confident Nelson will step up to.
She says it took great courage for the men attending the meeting to talk about the circumstances which led to their homelessness. Tama Manuel and Patariki Tawhiao shared their stories and the battles they face on the streets of Nelson. Patariki has been a “happy camper” for the past 10 years. He doesn’t like the term homeless because of the abuse he receives on the streets. “I’ll be walking down the road and pick some food at the bin and people will abuse me, call me
a bum and scum.” Patariki says the majority of the issues he encounters are caused by youth. He sleeps with “one eye open” after a savage attack while he was staying under a bridge. “A couple of young kids just beat me up and smashed a rock on my back, it gave me major anxiety.” Patariki is epileptic, a condition that prevents him obtaining employment. While he says there are plenty of great organisations that support him, the local youth are making life dangerous and difficult for him. “They steal my food, my gas cookers, I have nothing, but they still take it.” Patariki has lived in cars, on couches and shelters in Nelson Wellington and Palmerston North. He says the latter two are by far the more dangerous cities to be homeless in. “There have beggars there and they just about beat you up if you don’t give them anything.” Patariki says, while some shopkeepers don’t let him inside and he is hurled the odd insult, he is generally treated with respect by the majority of the population. Tama says he broke up with his family, found the bottle and the rest is history.

More than 12,000 people are expected to flood through the gates of Founders Park for the region's biggest book bash. Mountains of books from every genre imaginable, magazines, records, puzzles and DVDs were up for grabs in the thirtieth annual Founders Park Book Fair which kicked off on Saturday. Hundreds of literary lovers lined the Founders Park entrance as young and old stormed through the gates on the hunt for bargain books. Head coordinator Karen Clark says the "spectacular” event has grown from its humble begin-
nings in a garage to one of the highlights on the Nelson events calendar. "There is still a very strong demand for reading which is great.” Karen says there are 40 to 60 more banana boxes brimming with books than there were at last year’s fair. It is hoped more than $100,000 will be raised over the nine-day event. Karen says funds raised will be used towards upgrades for Founders. "It’s a lovely combination of the community,” says Karen. She says bookworms from all over New Zealand make the annual trip to Nelson for the book fair. "There are people here from
Taupo to Invercargill that come back year after year to buy books.” She says the fair would not be possible without the many volunteers, the public or their donations. "It’s amazing that people hand their books over and they are happy knowing the money will be coming back into the community.” James Stirling from Nelson says he was happy to get books about dinosaurs and monster trucks. The nine-year-old says he loves to read and there were lots of cool books to choose from. Founders Annual Book Fair runs from June 2 to June 10, from 10am to 4.30pm daily.

The first time Christine Leunens met Taika Waititi was in a Wellington office with a view over the city. Taika, then an emerging film director, came in, sat down, put his feet up on the desk and took in the scene. It was an icebreaker that Christine was relieved at. “I found him extremely nice and easy,” she says from her Atawhai home. “We just looked at each other, hugged, laughed and we have had a great experience ever since.” That was 2009, a year after Christine’s novel Caging Skies was released. They were there to discuss a transaction – the novel had caught Taika’s attention. Before he directed the big budget superhero spectacular Thor: Ragnarok, he wanted to adapt it for the big screen. Caging Skies tells the story of a German boy who has embraced the Hitler Youth in wartime Austria. He lives with his single mother, but the youngster’s views are challenged
when he meets a young Jewish girl who his mother has been hiding in the walls. Christine says Taika loved the idea of a child growing up in a surreal world that adults provide to them and felt like he could bring a fresh voice to the story. That was almost 10 years ago. Since then there has been discussions, delays and finally, in 2012, the project was green lit – which will be called Jojo Rabbit. “We all thought it was going to go very fast from there.” But, as a novelist, Christine is used to patience, often taking years to finish her books. She moved to Nelson with her family several years ago and, after four years, has just finished off the draft of her latest story – a meticulously researched historical novel set against the backdrop of the Rainbow Warrior saga. But after Thor, Taika had people asking him to direct all sorts of movies, which may have delayed Jojo Rabbit again. “But he is not that kind of person,” says Christine. “He said he was going to do this.” When he finished the script, he told

Christine that the story was still “her baby, but he had just put different clothes on it”. After watching his Oscar-nominated short film, Two Cars One Night, she knew she could trust him with it. Then again, after watching Hunt for the Wilderpeople, she knew that Taika would do Caging Skies justice. “He knows how to take all the story and the depth, but also to put in the pinch of entertainment,” she says. Christine is not sure if she will go to the film set in Prague as she hates the idea of awkwardly standing around. But then again, how often does the opportunity come to see Scarlett Johannsson play a character she dreamed up in her head? “So maybe I will go.” The film could be ready at the end of the year or early next year. “It’s exciting,” she says. And Taika is also excited. “I’m stoked to begin shooting my anti-war satire,” he said in a statement. “We’ve assembled an incredible cast and I couldn’t be more excited to finally ridicule Nazis and their beliefs. This film is going to

piss off a lot of racists and that makes me very happy.” The original book is now published in 15 languages and there has been recent interest from countries who have experienced recent conflict. “When I first wrote it, I thought to myself things like racism are completely dying out, I thought it was a thing of yesterday,” says Christine. “Then, all of a sudden, there were changes, now people think that it wouldn’t take much for this to come back.” Christine says she started writing very young and would send 16-page letters to her grandfather. She then began writing for film scripts and plays. But then she decided to make the leap into writing novels. “It was a bit of a danger, to do a novel you have no safety net. Looking back, I’m proud, but it was kind of crazy.” She will take a cut of the royalties for the film, which will be welcome. “Sometimes when you are writing you are thinking ‘gosh, this is hard’ but you have to have some faith.” It will still be a journey yet. “It will be really moving when I see the film, it is a bit of a dream just to see these characters brought to life.”

Contractor fined $90k for polluting waterway

A group of senior Nelson nurses are helping to educate the orphaned children of nurses in third world countries. Last month, they raised $2000 for the Girl Child Education Fund (GCEF) at an International Nurse’s Day dinner and charity auction at Chapel Cafe. The GCEF is run by the Florence Nightingale International Foundation and
currently supports 182 girls in Africa.The money they raised will go towards supporting the primary and secondary schooling of girls under the age of 18 whose nurse parent or parents have died, paying for fees, uniforms, shoes and books. Nelson Marlborough Health clinical director of women, child and youth, Annette Milligan, says she has been interested in supporting the charity for years. “I think it just touches the heart

of nurses. We feel humbled to do something to help the orphaned daughters of our colleagues internationally.” And, Annette knows how much of an impact their contribution will make to these girls lives. “For example, there is the story of one girl from Africa who went on to become a PhD student in Seoul. When you think of the background she came from and what this fund did for her life – that’s the difference it can make,” she says. It also helps to save children’s
lives, raises lifetime incomes, lowers HIV/AIDS rates, reduces violence and improves maternal health. Annette says it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the magnitude of problems in developing counties. “This focuses on a smallish number, but makes a profound difference. The impact of educating these girls is enormous – they would not have attended school otherwise. “Hopefully next year we can raise even more money.”
The contractors tasked with developing a new Nelson retirement village have been fined $90,000 after unlawfully discharging sedimentladen water into Marie Stream earlier this year. Directors for KB Contracting and Quarries had earlier pleaded guilty to charges brought by Nelson City Council under the Resource Management Act. The company have resource consent for cutting and filling 500,000m3 of earthworks, staged over two years, to prepare a site for a retirement village and housing development at Tasman Heights. Judge Brian Dwyer said that the company had exhibited “appalling and careless management”. He said the pollution had caused populations of indigenous banded kokopu in the stream to sharply decline and they may not recover. Group manager environmental management at council, Clare Barton, says that developers and contractors need to be vigilant when undertaking earthworks. “The sediment discharge has had an impact on Marie Stream and while it will not wind the clock back, the council will use money from the fine to put towards works to reinstate the Marie Stream habitat.”

Natural beauty doesn't need enhancing, and it's a disgrace that this out of touch, Nelson City Council has paid $60,000 to date for something which wasn't even properly evaluated in practical terms. Worse, the council is ignoring the fact that with its extravagant gestures to cope with totally unnecessary "art" installations like this, pensioners and others living close to the poverty line can't even afford basic heating.

The ‘do nothing’ option means ignoring serious river health issues. Nelson and New Zealand needs to grow our exports to keep our economy strong. There is a strong global demand for our quality apple, wine, kiwifruit, hops and berry fruit products. Storing winter’s surplus water to help these industries grow is a no brainer. The next step for this project is
resolving legal access to 9.6 ha of public conservation land in the remote Lee Valley. DOC has previously agreed to this as part of the dam resource consent involving a $2 million biodiversity package. I will be working with the Tasman District Council and West Coast-Tasman MP Damien O’Connor to help facilitate a local bill through Parliament to do this. This is about Councils and MP’s working together to solve a difficult problem and securing a better future for our economy and environment. Advert.

After 16 years and more than 8000 toenails trimmed, Annetta Hodges is hanging up her clippers. The 79-year-old was a recent recipient of the inaugural AgeConnect awards held at the Trafalgar Park Pavilion on Wednesday morning. The awards celebrated a host
of community champions improving the lives of our elderly citizens. “It’s very humbling,” Annetta says. Annetta is an Arthritis NZ volunteer, and once a month for almost two decades, has cut the toenails of sufferers unable to do so themselves. While “only toenails,” Annetta says her work can be a very social experience. “I have met some great people.”
Annetta found herself in the role full time after filling in for three months. “I was asked to do it while the previous lady took time off to look after her sick husband but then she didn’t want it back.” She says she wants to help patients maintain their dignity. “As a lot of the folks say, their arms are getting shorter, they have arthritis and they just can’t reach their feet. They are so grateful, they dance out the door.”
Annetta says clipping toenails is an extension of her nursing career. “When I did my nursing training sixty years ago, cutting toenails was one of the first things we were taught to do. Annette says over her 16-year career she has cut approximately 8400 toenails and she will now retire to focus on her many other voluntary initiatives. “I had to decide that when I turn 80 that’s it but I have really enjoyed it.”

Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly sits down with someone in the community doing something interesting at either Burger Culture or the Vic Brewbar. This time reporter Kate Russell spoke with Gareth Cashin, who has just said farewell to the Victory Community Centre (VCC) after 11 years as their programme and facilities manager. Gareth tells us about his exciting new role as manager of the new Greenmeadows Centre in Stoke, which is set to open at the end of June, over burger and shake at Burger Culture. How did it feel leaving VCC after 11 years? I had been at the centre since it first opened in January 2007. My children went through the school, so Victory kind of feels like home. There are so many wonderful connections in that community. It feels strange not heading there in the mornings - soon I’ll be cycling along the Railway Reserve to work. What achievements at VCC are you most proud of? There are heaps. Things like developing the Nelson Intermediate pool into the community

I’m also really looking forward to working in partnership with all of the anchor tenants, such as the Stoke Rugby Club and Stoke Seniors, and seeing how we can work together to increase their members and make the centre a really vibrant place. I’d love to be able to create a centre with lots of community artwork on the walls and things like that. What do you love about your work? I just love working with communities, and it’s a real privilege to work in dynamic communities and feel like you’re contributing to the improvement or creation of them. That’s what gets me up in the morning. I really enjoy that kind of work, it’s just great.

Uncovering ‘The Naked Truth’ Kate Russell Pole dancing will make its debut at the Theatre Royal next week, with a “brilliantly funny” play about sisterhood. Presented by Nelson Repertory Theatre, ‘The Naked Truth’ starts next Wednesday for four performances only. Set in a pole dancing class, the play is about a group of very different women who conquer pole dancing for a charity event to raise awareness and money for breast cancer. “It’s a play for real women about real women, about their relationships, their sex lives, their hangups, their attitudes to men, to each other, and finally - to themselves and their bodies,” says firsttime director Molly Brealey. “It’s a comedy, and a drama. There are a lot of highs and lots of lows - it’s going to relate to so many people. It will make you laugh, cry and be proud to be a woman.” The story gives moral support to the topic of breast cancer and ticket proceeds will being going to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. “I’ve lost loved ones to cancer. It’s important to me and personal to
me,” says Molly. “That’s why I’m doing it. The more bums on seats, the more money we can raise for Pink Ribbon.” ‘The Naked Truth’ is an English play, written by Dave Simpson but has been given a Kiwi twist,
with lots of 80s and 90s music and lots of colour, according to Molly. The six actresses have had 20 weeks of pole training at Dynamite Studio with Trina Star to prepare for their roles.
“Four of them had no pole experience at all, and three of them have never done theatre before, so they have done amazingly well.” And contrary to what some may think, Molly says there is “no nakedness”.

In junior football our principal focus is on ensuring that enjoyment and participation are at the forefront.” Diarmuid says NBF wants to move the focus away from the result to the development of players. The move has been met with mixed reviews from parents. “As with any new concept there is often uncertainty among stakeholders, particularly if there is a change in systems that have stayed the same for a long time, but the feedback that I have received has been very positive with many people commenting on how much more relaxed game days are.” However, not all are on board with the change, worried it will encourage players to be noncompetitive. But Diarmuid says NBF are working towards a situation where young players can play without undue pressure from the sidelines.

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants welcomed back its prodigal son with a comprehensive 10178 win over the Hawke’s Bay Hawks on Saturday to shoot to the top of the New Zealand NBL table. Nelson out-classed the visitors all over the court to leapfrog the Wellington Saints into top spot. Kyle Adnam was once again superb, directing the offence while scoring a game high 23 points as the Giants comfortably took out all four quarters. Finn Delaney proved dynamic on defence, notching four steals to go with his 17 points and four assists. Nelson nailed 17 three pointers in the 23-point rout to take their season record to 7-2. The match also served as the return of Giants legend Mika Vukona, who began his storied career with the Nelson fran-
chise way back in 2000. Coach Jamie Pearlman wasted little time reintroducing his veteran forward, opting to bring him on after just five minutes to the delight of nearly 1600 fans. While Mika may not have scored a point in his return, he says he was just happy to get on the court and blow out the cobwebs. After sitting out the first seven games to refresh from leading the Tall Blacks at the Commonwealth Games, Mika has taken on a player/assistant coach/mentor role with the Giants. He says the franchise is on an upward trajectory. “It’s great to see the team revamped and it’s awesome to be part of that.” He says Saturday’s win it was a clinical performance, his first in a Giants jersey since 2015.

"The side has had some good road wins and stuck those processes again tonight which was great, seeing that ball move is an awesome thing to watch." Mika says Jamie has created a “solid” team culture in his short time at the helm. “I’ve been really impressed with what Jamie has done, he has the respect of everyone and what the club is building right now is a great opportunity.” He says if the side sticks to its mantra of “everybody behind everybody,” they will be there at the business end of the season. “I have a lot of confidence in the ability of this side, we just want to keep working hard and as long as we do we will be looking pretty good.” Bringing a wealth of experience, including more than 400 ANBL games, Mika says there is a real buzz in Nelson following the Giants' early season success. “The crowds are here, they can sense it, it's good to be back."
Winter fishing Nikki Fisher Most people have started winding down from the summer fishing season, we aren’t most people though. Winter fishing is my favourite! Beautiful calm days, cold frosty mornings turning into stunning sunny afternoons. I like to cook my fish in a little coconut oil as opposed to butter as the coconut oil has a lower melting temp and a high smoke point so will get your fish beautifully golden without burning. SporTS RUGBY: The Nelson sub-union champions were decided yesterday as Marist hosted Stoke at Tahunanui Fields. Both sides pulled off major upsets in their semi-finals, Marist defeating Waimea Old Boys while Stoke stunned competition favourites Nelson. Marist centre James Hawkey will be one to watch after scoring three tries in last week’s opening cross-over clash with Moutere. Stoke skipper Sam Chamberlain has also been in irresistible form and will guide his troops from the back. Miller's strong season just the start Jonty Dine Nelson number eight Isaiah Miller has strong rugby roots. After three years in premier rugby, the blockbusting loose forward is finding his feet at the top level, and hoping to follow the path of his uncle, former All Black Paul Miller. A member of the 2017 U19 side, Isaiah is hoping to force his way into the Tasman Mako for their 2018 Mitre 10 Cup campaign. He will face plenty of competition for a spot in the loose forward with newest All Blacks Shannon Frizell and Jordan Taufua also in the Mako mix. The Marlborough Boys College alumnus says he found the transition from college to premier rugby relatively seamless. “It was similar to first XV but obviously a lot more physical.” Isaiah says Nelson has a great team environment to be in and is feeling much more at ease as a key member of the club. Despite a disappointing end to their sub union campaign, the 20-year-old believes they can still defend their Tasman Trophy. “We’re still hanging in there, we have had a few niggles and are just trying to recover,

Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport. but confident we can be there or thereabouts.” He says his career highlights to date came in 2017 when his Nelson club won its 13th Tasman Trophy in 15 years before the U19 Mako went unbeaten in their South Island tournament. “It was a pretty special year.” Isaiah rates his ball carrying ability as his greatest asset. “I just try to make those yards
for the team.” However, he believes he still has plenty of improvements to make to his game. “I’ll keep training hard and working on my skills, especially my defence.” He says he wants to increase his work rate and be “all over the field”. Isaiah says he draws inspiration seeing the likes of fellow Nelson rugby players Shannon,
Quinten Strange and Andrew Knewstubb who have recently gained professional contracts. “If I just keep doing what I’m doing, hopefully I can get there one day, too.” Isaiah has been running around rugby fields since he was eight and says it is his dream to one day wear the All Black jersey his uncle donned in 2001. “I definitely want to continue that legacy.”
