After a slow start to the winter, the flu season is hitting Nelson hard with the hospital reporting cases of influenza and increased respiratory infections. “After a mild start, we can confirm that the flu season has started in the Nelson region,” says the district health board’s clinical nurse specialist, Barbara Gibson. Nelson GP spokesman Graham Loveridge says there has been a sharp increase in both colds and flu over the last couple of weeks. “It’s about usual for this time of year, but there hadn’t been much in May or June so it feels like a sudden onset.” He adds that there has been a good uptake of flu vaccine this winter, with many work places giving free flu vaccine to help keep staff at work. “The flu vaccine gives good, but not absolute, protection probably 60 percent effective.”
He says avoiding contact with flu sufferers, hand washing, avoiding touching your face, alcohol hand-sanitisers and plenty of sleep, all help to stay healthy. “And those with the flu should stay away from work.” Harley’s Pharmacy owner Andrew Harley says they are seeing more customers with the flu - rather than milder cold symptoms - this winter. “This year’s flu has been pretty intense and the worst thing is that it lingers for a long time. This one has a nasty cough that can linger for three weeks or so. “The people who have been hit have been hit hard this year.” He adds that they haven’t experienced any surges in cold and flu medication sales, with more people going straight to their doctor. Family remember lost fisherman Brittany Spencer
Amanda Cuff knew something was wrong when she arrived at Duncan Bay and saw that her stepfather was nowhere to be found. She was just 14-yearsold when Barry Wells went missing on Queen’s Birthday Weekend, 1999. Barry was meant to sail out to the bay and meet his family, who were driving, and meet up for the long weekend.

His boat was found on the Sunday afternoon, in gear, and with the locator beacon, life raft and lifejackets still onboard. But Barry was nowhere to be seen. As soon as he was reported missing, the whole Nelson fleet went straight out to look for him and continued to do so for weeks. “The official search finished when they found

Now every year, Amanda, along with the rest of the family, sits on the same site dedicated to him and remember the husband, father and brother that he was. On Saturday, hundreds of people crowded around the Seafarers’ Memorial for the annual Blessing of the Fleet, to send good wishes to those making their way out on

The 17th blessing was marked with seafood, a boat parade, fish auction, a helicopter boat-rescue demonstration and support for the locals who work from the country’s largest commercial fishing port. “We have no grave to visit,” says Amanda. “But we have the memorial down at the wharf which is better and so to have everyone show up every single year means a lot to the family. “The blessing means different things for me each time, while it
was heartbreaking to lose him as a kid, sitting on that seat this year I couldn’t help but be really proud of him, he was my hero and it makes you realise just how precious life is.” However, with the decline of smaller family fishing businesses and the loss of several of the older generation, this year’s blessing took on a sombre tone for the family. “This year was a bit more sad, there were less boats on the water, there was only one of our family boats there, The Orca, a lot of the older fishermen are gone and fishing is now more for the bigger boats, you can certainly feel the difference.” Amanda thanks the Iona Trust II and the Seafarers Memorial Trust on behalf of the family for their continued support and efforts to honour Barry and fishermen like him.

A year after a division of Gibbons Holdings bought the ailing Suburban Club, plans are forming for the future of the Tahunanui site. Company chief executive Scott Gibbons confirmed to the Weekly that it will develop a complex converting the club’s site into a retail hub featuring cafes, a convenience store and shops for other small goods. “It’s been a work in progress and we have been working with the club to refine their needs,” Scott says. The club itself will occupy a smaller floor space, with much of the newer parts of the building being kept while older parts will be demolished and redeveloped. “It is something fresh and new with a convenience factor, so we are pretty excited about it,” Scott says. He believes it will help service the growing Tahunanui area as well as the Port Hills and parts of Stoke. There will be space for about four or five different spaces with some more coming further in the future. “We are looking to develop a

centre that has long-term potential,” Scott says. “It takes time. We could have gone in overnight and done something B-grade, but we want something A-grade.” Plans are still being finalised, but Scott says there will be something definitive to put out to potential stakeholders within the next two weeks. He hopes the entire project will be complete by the end of the year. It is a far cry from where the club was. Only recently its debt reached $2.7 million and it was in a precarious financial situation. The site, which includes 150 car parks, had a rateable value of $4.8 million.

After being put up for sale in December 2015, a division of Nelson group Gibbons Holdings purchased the club in March last year. Suburban Club president Leigh Bromell says the plans are “really exciting”. “Yes, it will be a smaller space but we can do whatever we want for it, which is really positive.” She says they made the plans public to members and there had not been any negative feedback. The Returned Services Association is also keen to stay on in the new space. Leigh says membership was stable and the club was now looking to the future.

The Nelson Farmers’ Market is on the hunt for a new site in the CBD after being evicted from Morrison Square. But organisers are treating it as an opportunity to grow it into something “bigger and better”. The popular market has been held at Morrison Square every Wednesday for the last eight years. But market manager Miriam Clark says she received an “unexpected” letter two weeks ago, saying that the market had until the end of September to find a new home. The letter didn’t state the reasons why, but from what Miriam understands some of the tenants approached the landlord, the Accident Compensation Corporation, about the suitability of the market in the square. “It was definitely out of the blue, but we’re viewing it as an exciting opportunity for the market to grow,” she says. “It has been a great spot for us Morrison Square has worked really well, but we’re now at a point where we’ve nearly outgrown each other.” Miriam says they are getting more stall applications than even before, but due to restrictions on stall

numbers and types they have not been able to accommodate everyone. The news also comes off the back of the market’s success at the annual Farmers’ Markets New Zealand Winter Food Awards in Gisborne earlier this month. Five local producers took out honours, including Brookfield Free Range Eggs who won the egg category, alongside Nutt Ranch, Moutere Fruits, Mason’s Farms and FRUT4U Lowes Orchard. Miriam says she wasn’t surprised with the market’s success at the awards, and it only reaffirms that the market is ready for a “new phase” of development. “It’s fantastic to get that national recognition and it reinforces to customers that what their purchasing is top-of-the-line.” And, although they only have three months to relocate a new home, she says she is “optimistic” that they’ll be able to find something suitable in time. “We’ve identified a number of places and are working through the process to secure something. “We’ve had overwhelming support from people saying that the market needs to continue, and we want to keep bringing hundreds of people into the central city every Wednesday.”

Retail promotions aren’t known for being overly scientific -- but that didn’t stop a collective of talented folk from making it the centrepiece of an entry into the Uniquely Nelson Illuminate promotion. The Illuminate promotion is run in conjunction with Feast of the Senses, to help brighten up the CBD in the middle of winter. Arts Council Nelson helps find artists to showcase their work in the shop windows of Nelson retailers. On Friday night, judges Simon Duffy from Uniquely Nelson, Lloyd Harward from Arts Council Nelson and councillor Gaile Noonan visited each display and voted for their favourite. The unanimous winner was “Breath” which combined the skills of artists, students and scientific knowledge to create
its entry in the window of the Nelson Provincial Museum. Stream ecologist Mel McColgan says the inspiration for the display was a project to reduce toxic and solid waste while growing an understanding and sense of guardianship of Te Wairepo/York Stream. “We’ve been trying to get the community to have more love for York Stream. So we’ve tried to come up with some cunning ways to encourage people to respect the stream and the life in it.” Artist Vicky Smith was the brains behind the design but it was then given to students from Victory, Auckland Point, Nelson Intermediate and Nelson College for Girls schools to bring to life. The first stage for the students was carving patterns onto the fish with a range of files and tools. Then it was to build electronic sensors for it. The sensors have been placed between Bishopdale Reserve and the Trafalgar Centre and collect information,

have a collective of people with knowledge in this area, thanks to Light Nelson, and we’ve been able to access that for projects like this.” Simon Duffy says seeing such an in-depth project has been great for the promotion. “I look at it as a really positive way for the retailers to connect with the arts community and enables the community to engage with the CBD. Even better this year, with first prize going to Te Wairepo/ York Stream Project, as it involves some strong engagement with the schools within Nelson City.” For winning first place the group won $800, in second place was Margaret Johnston and Global Culture winning $400 and in third was Donna Allfrey and Expressions Florist with $200. New theatre gets star power Nelson’s newest theatre is ready to raise its curtains - recruiting a former Shortland Street star to help teach an acting workshop to aspiring teens. Ghost Light Theatre has just opened on Bridge St and is looking to put on bold and ambitious projects while also filling a gap in the market. A ghost light is a single light left on stage when a theatre is unoccupied so cast and crew can find their way around in the dark. The theatre is above The Hollow at 146 Bridge St, which Martha Washington clothing once filled. It is now being turned into an artists’ collective called Bridge Street Studios, with the theatre taking over the biggest space. Ghost Light’s founder, Laura Irish, says the idea was to create an intimate and exciting space in central Nelson to become a community hub for the per-
forming arts. “We want to be a place where we share ourselves and pass on knowledge. We want to showcase and be a testing ground for local and national works and artists who try things a little differently - who experiment or push boundaries.” As part of that vision Laura has brought in Amelia Meredith-Reid and her husband Shadon to help teach an acting workshop for dedicated young performers aged 15-19. Amelia is known for the role of ‘Bella’ on Shortland Street, from which she recently retired after many years on the soap. Shadon is fresh from winning the supreme award at the Nelson Fringe Festival and is himself a graduate of Toi Whakaari acting school. “We want to bring the skills that we have and offer them to Nelson and work with Laura who is doing amazing things, and con-

A single Twitter post has reunited Ruby Bay’s Annie Coster with her grandfather’s military uniform. Lt Col Cyprian Brereton, or Cyp as Annie calls him, was a famous World War One commander who survived being shot in the head in Gallipoli, as well as being the Nelson Provincial Museum’s first professional curator. But to Annie, he was just Granddad. “He was a lieutenant, a curator, talked on the radio, spoke at schools, hosted library days, but first off he was my grandfather,” says Annie. “He was a very eccentric and unassuming sort of bloke, when he wasn’t dressed to the nines or in his military uniform he would look like nothing on this earth, he’d wear a tea cosy on his head, and go to church in slippers.” Cyp’s military dress uniform came up for sale from a private owner a few months ago,

The dark green and gold jacket, breeches and cap, believed to have been Cyp’s Nelson Rifles Volunteer uniform, was purchased by the museum, which is working to preserve it. Annie, who saw the dress uniform for the first time yesterday, says she was delighted with the discovery. “I didn’t even know it existed, I was astounded when they told me, I got a sent a photograph of it and showed it to all the family, but this is the first time I’ve seen it. “For a 100-year-old uniform, it’s in such amazing nick, I wish my clothes lasted that

However, the young Ngatimoti girl cashed in her inheritance and set off on a 42-day journey through war-torn countries and lifethreatening situations to find Cyp in a London hospital. Cyp took 48 hours leave from the hospital to get married and, when he was well

He may be world famous in Nelson’s sporting scene but time is not on Dave Palmer’s side. Five years ago doctors told the 71-year-old that he had five years to live after being diagnosed with a heart condition. The Weekly featured a story earlier this month about Dave’s remarkable journey and his relationship with Action Indoor Sports, where he has been a well-known personality for more than 20 years. But now the team at Action Indoor Sport are wanting to give something back to Dave, who has struggled to get around town since his mobility scooter broke down. They also want to help Dave fulfil some of his bucket list. “Dave's bucket list includes a trip to Auckland on the train from Wellington because he's done every other train trip, and a holiday in Auckland where he can go to the movies and take a trip to the Sky Tower,” says Morgan Collis-Fisher. So Morgan has started a Givealittle campaign for Dave, who

He might be 71-years-old, missing a spleen, have a bad heart, a wonky shoulder, a problematic hernia and breathing problems but there can be little doubt that Dave Palmer is the super sub to end all super subs. For 23 years Dave has been the man to call on if you are down a player - whether it be netball, cricket or soccer - Dave will be up for it. “I've had that many injuries and still come back for more. I'm a hard man to put down sometimes.” It was 1994 when he first wandered into Action Indoor Sports, which was then located on Pascoe St in Tahunanui. Back then he was a resident at Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital and discovered that the outdoor area at the sports complex was less than ideal. “There were cigarette butts everywhere. So then I offered to clean it up.” Which he did. Then he kept coming back. He started tidying up around the place, emptying the rubbish and cleaning the balls.

Everybody has got something they want to do full time. I haven’t got Sky Sport because it costs too much money, but cricket and soccer are my thing.” Dave also coaches some indoor soccer teams though sometimes he says it's like “talking to a brick wall” because out of all the teams he says there are only about four people that really know the rules. “And I know the rules.” He can also be seen during the summer months doing the scoring for Stoke Nayland Cricket Club. Dave lives in an assisted living facility with three others and, despite being given a less than optimistic prognosis by doctors, he is still keen to keep playing. “I’ve been trying to take it easy. If I rush that’s when the trouble starts.” He says it still annoys him when the sports complex gets a bit messy, but with Dave on the job it is not likely to stay that way for long.

Judene Edgar A trip to visit her sick father has ended in an unexpected windfall for former Richmond woman Deanna Harley, who takes home $5000 after winning Richmond Unlimited’s Cash on Queen promotion. Deanna’s name was drawn out of over 30,000 entries into the competition which ran from June 5 to July 9. Richmond Unlimited’s coordinator Charlotte Bidlake says that Deanna was absolutely stunned. “She couldn’t believe she had won, but straight away she said that she’d share it with her sister,” Charlotte says. Deanna’s father was recently diagnosed with cancer so she’s been flying back and forth to Nelson from Auckland, where she now lives, to visit her father and support her family. Deanna’s sister Toni Baigent says that she got a phone call from a very excited Deanna. “She rang and told me all about it, all in one breath”, says Toni. “It’s been a really intense time, so it’s been so nice to have something else to focus on for a second. We’ve been jumping around on the phone and sending memes to each other”. Despite the jubilation, the unexpected win isn’t going to their heads. Both Deanna and Toni are planning on spending their money on family. Deanna is going to be using her share of the winnings to help pay for flights to visit the family, and Toni is planning on paying some bills and buying shoes for the family. “It’s my son’s 16th birthday soon so I might get something nice for him as well”, says Toni. “They are such deserving winners”, says Charlotte. “I’m just so thrilled for them”. As well as the $5000 grand prize, there were also five lucky weekly winners, Kevin Hunter from Nelson, Angela Hayes, Richmond, Tania Trewavas, Richmond, Maree Cripps, Stoke and Gillian Eyles from Enner Glynn, who each received a $200 gift voucher to spend at any shop in Richmond of their liking.

Fake flyer: Charles Anderson, in his column of Tuesday July 11, describes the "Brook News” flyer making the rounds as “satiric”. I disagree. I think it plainly malicious and devoid of humour. Were it simply satiric, it would not urge its readers to join the Brook Valley Community Group Incorporated, which I have the honour to chair. It would not missspell my name, nor make the other spelling errors which litter the text. The flyer is clearly intended to relate us to a range of views we do not have. It is, unfortunately the case that some members of the public have been deceived. It bears repeating, then, that our aims are solely to do with the Brook Valley and its infrastructural concerns. Our Give-a-little campaign has been sullied by trolls prepared to pay a dollar to express invective which is deeply nasty, offensive, and not at all funny. We wish there were thousands more such messages, (we could do with the money, frankly, and welcome donations through your pages) but as writings, these are pathetic scraps, as you would well appreciate. I have emailed Hudson Dodd of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust asking that the trust repudiates these messages, this flyer, that it distance itself from these attempts to discredit our organisation by any means, however loathsome. I have received no reply. You will be aware that the Minister for the Environment, Nick Smith, has de-
scribed our action as a “stunt”, and ourselves as “disingenuous”. It is not just the lowly trolls of our community who disdain proper form in communication and argument, it seems. We shall not join them in their gutters, high or low. The High Court case will take place in Wellington on Thursday, 27 July. We expect to win. Christopher St Johanser. Yes, the water fluoridation chemicals the government currently wishes to introduce to our drinking water that are labelled "fluoride" are highly toxic, as well as persistent in the environment. The author of this fake flyer clearly does not know that chlorine, unlike fluoride, can be easily filtered from our water. Fluoride requires much more expensive filtration costing around $5000 to establish and $500 a year to maintain. The assertion in the article that refers to fluoride making you sick could be better expressed by saying that there are a vast number of scientific studies that show there are health risks in ingesting fluoridated water. One fateful day off sick resulted in the grounding of the ‘Fifeshire’. James Cross, the ships pilot for Port Nelson was ill in February 1842 and unable to work the day the
“Fifeshire” was due to sail. Captain William Moore was called in as his replacement but in attempting to leave on a half tide, he misread the currents, running the ship hard aground on “Arrow Rock.”

Armed with spades and gumboots, around 25 Nelsonians rolled up their sleeves on Saturday for the Forest & Bird Community Planting Day at Orphanage Stream. Around 600 saltwater-friendly trees and plants were placed into the banks of Orphanage Stream, above the whitebait spawning area by Bunnings car park. Everything from Saltbush and Coastal Ribbonwood, to Tauhinu and Ngaio, were put into the ground, including a wee flax grown by Stoke School students and siblings Tegan and Riley Stoddart, specifically for the day. The pair had seen a Forest & Bird stall at the Isel Park Twilight Market and volunteers were giving away plants for people to grow until they were big enough to plant on a community planting day. Riley, 10, who says he did most of the watering, was very keen to transfer the plant from the pot to the ground. “It was really fun growing it

Photo: Brittany Spencer. and it's cool to see it planted, I’ll be able to look at it every time I bike past.” Riley and Tegan’s mother, Amanda Stoddart, says the family spend a lot of time biking past Orphanage Stream and will often pick up rubbish along the bank, so when the kids saw the opportunity to grow a flax to be planted, they were both very excited. “We saw the stall there and we spend a lot of time down here, so the kids thought it was a great idea and they were more than happy to water it and look

after it until we could plant it, we’re all about giving back to the environment and the kids just love it.” Organising all the volunteers and getting her hands dirty as well was Forest & Bird volunteer Julie McLintock, who has been doing plantings around the region for over 35 years. “It was great to see the locals working with Forest & Bird and Nelson Nature, and the end result is lovely. It's great to step back and see all the trees and plants and then finish the morning with a cup of tea.”

NOW OPEN While many wish the winter cold would go away, those with a passion for winter sports keenly awaited the opening of the Rainbow Ski Area. If you haven’t heard yet, the ski area opened last Saturday so now is the time to grab your skis, snowboard or sled and head up the mountain for plenty of action in the snow. Rainbow offers people crisp, pristine mountain air and being at a height of over 1760 metres, a ski area that captures regular winter snow, complemented by extensive snow making, and all superbly groomed to create a stunning winter playground. In the lead up to opening day, Rainbow’s staff have been making snow whenever the temperature and humidity allowed, however the stormy weather made the process particularly difficult. Fortunately, all the hard work paid off and people were able to enjoy a great start to the season. “We didn’t have full facilities but we had the beginner and intermediate and then a strip down a trail we call Shirtfront, so we were able to keep everybody entertained. We had heaps of people come up on Saturday. It was great weather, we couldn’t have asked for anything better,” says ski area manager, Matt Alcock. This year Rainbow again relied heavily on an army of volunteers to ensure the ski area was up to scratch for opening day, with volunteer work parties taking to the field throughout the summer months to complete any repairs and maintenance. “They are really integral to the operation and the upkeep of Rainbow and it’s really outstanding that people give their time to Rainbow. It kind of blows my mind a little bit, it’s great,” says Matt. Playing in the snow is a magical experience, whether you’re building a snowman, taking to the slopes for the first time or you’re an experienced skier who is fully prepared to make the most of the snow season. Rainbow Ski Area is proud to be a family-friendly destination, with facilities that are perfect for kids having their first go at snow sports. There are great learner and kid’s packages for the first timers, or simply come up with mum and dad and experience the mountains. If you don’t have chains, or would prefer not to drive the mountain road, the Rainbow shuttle bus provides a great transport option, running regularly from the base car park. Alternatively,

to its official opening, and from the feedback received at their three soft opening nights last week, they have achieved what they set out to. “It’s really well thought out food that has a lot of passion behind it,” says Chris, who heads up the kitchen team. “We make all of our own buns, we’ve got black buns which have charcoal in them, we’ve got a hybrid between a bun and a brioche and we’ve got vegan buns and gluten-free buns that we’ve spent a lot of time on. Everything’s taken us two or three months to develop, from buying every single cut of cow, mincing it and tasting them all, to working out how everything would go together.” Chris says their goal is to reach perfection, which has meant a lot of tasting and adjusting to achieve what they believe is the best burger. This even includes consideration of the bun to meat ratio, an important element for any successful burger.

“We also have a philosophy of embracing individuality, Burger Culture is our space and we’ve been able to do whatever we want and that includes staff uniform, however staff are allowed to personalise it and be who they want to be,” says Zoe. Building a team that reflects the values and vibe of Burger Culture has been an important part of the business's creation. “We wanted people who were passionate about hospitality and could understand what we
want to achieve,” says Zoe. “We’ve clearly communicated our vision to them and everyone’s really excited.” Creating the business has been a huge undertaking but now that it’s complete and open to the public, Chris says the team can relax a little and enjoy the opportunity to take people on a fun, burger-fuelled journey. They have a banner group called the Shady Collective and one of the artists from that group has done a lot of the artwork for us,” says Chris. “It’s basically Nelson artists who have been involved, and we’re also working with Nelson City Framers to offer people interested in the art the chance to purchase prints.” Burger Culture will be open from 11am until late every day, however their coffee and doughnut hatch will be open from 8am, Monday to Friday, for those on their way to work. While Burger Culture is confident in their food and the level of customer service, they ask people to bear with them as they settle into normal operation. As well as people’s choice, the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards will feature several other categories, the winners of which will be decided by a panel of judges. These include Pomeroy’s Coffee and Tea Co. Barista of the Year, Greenhough Vineyards Head Chef of the Year, Westmeat Up and Coming Chef of the Year, Nelson Tasman Alcohol Accord Outstanding Host Responsibility and Kahurangi Estate Outstanding Beverage List, as well as two new awards for the accommodation sector including Best Small Accommodation Provider and Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly Mid-Large Accommodation Provider. Kyle Lightfoot has owned and operated the Caltex Bishopdale service station for the last 15 years and has just recently opened a brand-new station in Richmond, on the corner of Champion and Salisbury Roads. Before joining the service station industry, Kyle worked in banking, becoming well known among those in the Richmond area. While the change from banking to owning a petrol station may seem like a huge leap, Kyle says it’s actually very similar in that the same level of customer service applies, you are still selling people a product, and there are still strict compliance and regulations to adhere to. Work on a second Caltex site began around three years ago when Kyle started discussions with Tasman District Council on the best location for the station. The land the Caltex now sits on was under contract with Coman Holdings, “so I approached them to see if they would be interested in build-

We stock the Pams brand and other value lines in order to keep our price points surprisingly low.” Caltex Richmond enjoys a spacious site, giving customers the ability to easily manoeuvre their cars and creating an efficient traffic flow. The station has an entrance off Salisbury Rd and another off Champion Rd, however cars must exit
the station onto Champion Rd, which is a benefit for drivers as it puts them on the quieter side of the roundabout. “We’ve got a great team of staff here,” says Kyle. “Some have worked in the industry before, while others have come from previous positions in the hospitality sector, so we have a great mix of experience and personalities. And we have been able to train them through the Caltex in Bishopdale, so they’re all up-to-date with the processes.” Caltex Richmond is also excited about being able
to offer customers quality barista coffee, thanks to Obsess coffee, plus a range of cabinet food for those needing to fuel themselves when they’re on the go. Their bakery section includes delicious muffins, cakes and slices, as well as pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and other savouries. While the whole process has taken quite some time, the team at Caltex Richmond is excited to be open and finally serving customers. “The service station is lucky to be working alongside some very successful New Zealand-owned business partners including Z Energy, which owns the Caltex brand in New Zealand and supplies fuel to all Caltex branded petrol stations, as well as Lotto and AA Smartfuel,” says Kyle. To celebrate their opening and treat their customers, Caltex Richmond will be offering people some great fuel discounts for the next month, starting on Thursday, July 20. Instead of the usual six cents off per litre that the AA Smartfuel card offers, Kyle says people will receive ten cents off per litre, subject to the card’s normal terms and conditions. Plus, if you purchase a touchless car wash you can receive four cents off per litre and if you purchase a coffee and muffin combo, you’ll receive two cents off per litre. Rather than hosting international netball players and the Nelson Giants, the Trafalgar Centre was filled with a whopping 520 gymnasts for the Top of the South Gymnastics Competition. The weekend-long competition saw the centre kitted out with uneven bars, beams, a spring floor, vault, rings and pommels as gymnasts from 22 clubs across New Zealand competed to get a step closer to qualifying for Nationals, which will be held in Nelson in October. Among the sea of gymnasts were 12 and 13-year-old Step Five women’s artistic gymnasts Hannah Robertson and Sienna Rajek. The Top of the South Competition was their largest meet yet but, despite nerves from com-

peting against so many other gymnasts, the pair’s medal haul suggests they are well on track to qualifying for Nationals. Hannah took home two silver medals, coming second in the Step Five beam and overall team and placing ninth in the individual overall. Sienna won a trio of medals, coming first in the Step Five floor and vault, second in the Step Five overall team and placing sixth individually. “I wanted to get 50 points and I got 53 plus the two golds and silver. I was hoping to do well but all the other gymnasts were really good, so I was really surprised and really happy.” Both Hannah and Sienna have hit the national qualifying mark but only the top four in the region will progress through to Nationals in October. “I really want to make the team, especially after this weekend,
it’s really made me want it,” says Hannah. Overall, the 60 Gymnastics Nelson athletes showed that smaller clubs can compete with the likes of Olympia, Christchurch School of Gymnastics, and Capital Gym Sports. Standouts include Alex Pearson who placed first in the Men's Level 1 section, winning all but two of his events, the parallel bars and the horizontal bar. Quinn Birrs took out the Men Level 7 apparatus against two Olympia gymnasts in a highlycontested category, winning vault and rings. The Women Step 2 Over was won by Elise Smith who took out the vault and uneven bars. Meanwhile, Hana Williams won the Gold level, also claiming first place in the vault and uneven bars, followed closely by teammate Sasha Challenger who won the floor.

Bands, performances and the standard array of hot and tasty food made for a welcome way to spend a winter morning, while children were entertained by mini jeeps and bouncy castles, When Arthritis New Zealand dig for trains as well as a big needed

The main attractions of the day were the mid-winter dip and the duck race, both of which drew plenty of entries from locals and out of towners keen to support Riwaka School. He still plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of arthritis. Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked. Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “community concierge” washing windows and greeting customers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood promotion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow along, but when people respond you feel good.”
