Stoke Library has become Nelson City Council’s latest headache after decay, rot and toxigenic mould was discovered in the roof beams and cavity - with the possibility of

more being revealed. The problem could be so bad that a council asset manager suggested to councillors at Thursday’s community services committee meeting that the 25-year-old building may need a “complete overhaul”. The issue only came to light a few weeks ago during some main-

tenance repairs by contractors, which revealed signs of water entering the building. A weather tightness report undertaken by an independent surveyor was presented to council, revealing there is decay to the structural beams that provide support to the

building’s roof. There was also visible timber rot and mould, and laboratory analysis identified brown rot on the frame and plywood sheathing and Stachybotrys toxigenic mould in the plasterboard. The report says the roof beam sections would need to be fully

replaced, along with the wall below, and steel added to support the beam. Roger Ball, group manager community services, told Nelson Weekly that the preliminary investigation reveals the repairs

Nelson residents will have to wait about another month before they can safely walk and cycle between the Maitai and Haven Rd as the public is faced with conflicting information about the delay. The Maitai to Haven Rd shared pathway is an Urban Cycleways programme funded project which is being built by Higgins on behalf of the New Zealand Transport Agency, and was due to be completed in early July. Rocks Rd commuters have been monitoring the progress of the project which presently features much of the Haven Rd walkway dug up, ready to be resealed. NZTA says that the delay is due to Cyclones Fehi and Gita earlier in February despite the project start date being listed as April on its website. The purpose of the new shared pathway is to make it safer for cyclists who are not as experienced as daily commuters. NZTA southern media manager Frances Adank says both

It also specifically states that “shared path work closer to the city not affected” by the Feb 1 storm. Frances says that although it may not have had a direct effect, the storms do have a runoff effect on the resourcing of projects. “For example, contractors are called to other areas in urgent need of help and that can affect

projects which are being managed with less urgency.” The project was dealt another complication on Saturday morning when a vehicle crashed into a fence and was abandoned in the middle of their construction site. Police were called just before 3am on Saturday morning to the vehicle, which was then on its side. The Mitsubishi RVR, which has four blown out tyres and four smashed windows, was moved further off the road yesterday morning before being removed in the afternoon.

Kirby Lane goes it alone Locally Owned and Operated

The local developer behind a project to create a community space in the heart of Nelson is going it alone after red tape and lack lustre support from council inspired him that Kirby Lane has to be done by the people, for the people. Galen King, who owns the Bridge St Collective, first proposed Kirby Lane in 2016 and hoped it would soon become a new laneway precinct for the city. It initially was to be a mall made out of shipping containers – complete with boutique shops, cafés, eateries, coworking space, event spaces, offices and even a children’s playground. However, after the development costs and requirements came in it would have been a $1.5 million project. “I couldn’t afford that,” Galen says. “The economics just didn’t add up.” So he shelved that and, via the Long Term Plan, implored the Nelson City Council to help pave the way for a scaled-down project. Council agreed to help $2000 a year for a decade. “But, in return, the space would effectively become public land where they would have a say on the number of days we were al-

lowed to be open,” Galen says. “We had to clean rubbish 10 metres outside our boundary, we had to have toilets and security … all for a really nominal amount of money.” Galen says the council investment wouldn’t have covered the cost of a playground, let alone any of the other requirements. “I can’t afford to put a playground in now, I’m so burned out by the constant changes in requirements and health and safety.” However, he says the good news is that the playground actually would have taken up a lot

of space. “It wouldn’t have been good enough, it would have been like the blue lines on Bridge St. The master plan for the street was actually amazing but the budget was cut back so much that all council could afford was blue

I don’t want this to be like that.” So, he is putting his faith in people power. “We want to create a community space that is going to be about bringing people together.” He is putting the call out to people to get involved – especially food cart owners to try and create a vibrant space where anyone is allowed to hang out, regardless of if they are buying food there. Already they have a pizza oven, which local company More Pork have on site. Galen says it’s an opportunity for someone to come in

and run it as a business. “We have the luxury of not having to follow rules on when we open and close.” He is hopeful the Farmers Market could move to Kirby Lane from its present location along the Maitai, where it is known to be struggling to attract punters. “The purpose is to create a dynamic space in town to draw people in so they start filling up empty shops.” Galen, who is now based in New York, says he realises the importance of this more than ever. “For the vibrancy of any town or city you need people living, playing and working in the city at all times. New York feels safer and more harmonious at all times of the day than Nelson does, because if you walk at 2am there are still people out, going to restaurants, going to work. In Nelson at 5.01pm there is nobody out.” He says, as a result, shops struggle because everyone one goes straight home, restaurants aren’t full. “It’s to draw people in. The Nelson woman is the founder of Share my Pet, a website dedicated to improving the wellbeing of people and animals alike through sharing and caring. ‘Share my Pet’ was launched in January this year and the site already has more than 300 mem-

bers wanting their furry friend fix. Lili created the platform with her husband Dave to connect animal lovers across the region. Lili says the service appeals to people who are too busy for pets, travel a lot, are renting or have big family commitments. She conceived the idea after talking to people on the beach, people who would always come up

like this, I was just desperate to walk a dog.” The animal lover is unable to have a dog due to her living arrangements. “It’s great to just be able to give a dog a few treats, take it for a walk and become their friend.” She says animals improve her spiritual well-being. “If I’m having a bad day, give me an animal to pat and I am imme-

Woman punched and stabbed by intruder Sara Hollyman A woman was attacked with a knife in her Brook St home after disturbing an intruder on Sunday evening. A police spokesperson says that around 6pm the woman noticed some items in her living room were missing and began to look around her home where she found a man. “She was grabbed by the man and punched several times and received a minor laceration from a knife he was carrying.” The offender then fled the home out onto Brook St. The woman received minor injuries and was treated at Nelson Hospital but has since been released. She is being comforted by friends and police are working closely with her. A scene examination at the property was due to be completed on Monday morning. The intruder was dressed in a black top, black pants and was wearing a dark red scarf or bandana across his face. Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen this man or observed any suspicious activity in the Brook area, particularly near the intersection with Robinson Road, yesterday afternoon or evening. News Rose Renton guilty of rubbing rat poison on Nick Smith: Nelson woman Rose Renton has been charged with offensive behaviour after rubbing rat poison on Nelson MP Nick Smith. Nick claimed that Rose rubbed rat poison on him at the Saturday market last year. JPs found her guilty of the charge at the Nelson District Court on Thursday. Nick said he had poison rubbed in his hair and clothes, however, Rose said she only touched him lightly. Rose came to national prominence in 2015 when her son Alex became incapacitated with a prolonged seizure. A petition to the Government from Alex’s family to allow him to be treated with a medicinal cannabidiol oil was approved.

NEWS Alleged driver of Waimea Rd crash pleads not guilty: The alleged driver of a car that crashed head on into another vehicle on Waimea Rd on April 30 has pleaded not guilty to the charges laid against him. Andrew Fleming, 47, is charged with careless or inconsiderate use of a vehicle, driving with excess blood alcohol causing death and two counts of excess blood alcohol causing injury. The crash injured a woman who was 30 weeks pregnant, who then had to have an emergency caesarean after the collision. Her baby boy was transferred

to Wellington NICU where he remained in critical condition before he died five days later. Fleming will next appear before the courts in September. Brook Sanctuary now open to public Sara Hollyman The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is officially open to the public after a yearlong pest removal operation. The sanctuary, which spans 690 hectares of land and is the largest of its kind in the South Island is now home to many species of native bird including bellbird, tui, fantail, tomtit and robin. It was closed in July last year to make way for a poison drop, which was protested by locals. Trust coordinator Kat Willcocks says its been a massive effort from everyone involved to get it to the stage of bringing in the public. “There’s been a huge effort, the volunteer effort especially has been insane. "We’ve had to do all new signage around the sanctuary which is difficult to imagine if you haven’t been in.” She says there was also around 1500 fence post

breaches. “The fence is a really good design, but the thing is it runs through 14km of forest, so trees are going to fall down and that’s just part of what happens.” She says the most important thing is being able to get the response there in a timely manner. “We’ve got amazing volunteers we can call on if there’s

a breach or a tree down that damages the fence in some way. "We can have it monitored, fixed and completely pest proof again in two hours.” Inside the fence is now deemed ‘pest-free’ and Kat is excited to begin introducing missing wildlife species into the environment. “We will be introducing kaka and kiwi are also quite high up on the list. "We are hoping this year we will start getting the ball rolling. She says they have seen a huge increase in birdlife organically since removing pests from the sanctuary “We’ve had really good organic increase of tomtits and fantails, those small vulnerable birds. That will be the key, they will continue to increase naturally.” The sanctuary is open Saturday to Monday 10am4pm, dependending on the weather.

Greenmeadows budget expected to rise again Kate Russell The cost of Stoke’s $7.19 million Greenmeadows Centre is expected to rise yet again, with Nelson City Council having to appoint an independent assessor to keep tabs on the troubled project. Councillors were briefed on the project last Thursday by infrastructure group manager, Alec Louverdis, who confirmed that an assessor is on-site to ensure the building is completed to a high standard by Auckland contractor, Watts and Hughes. He also said they had additional supervision from the architect and an external project manager. “We are also considering additional supervision.” This will mean extra costs for the project, which has blown out by nearly $1 million already. “There have been additional costs, and there will be additional costs, for example bringing in the assessor, and potentially bringing in additional resources from our side to do inspections,” said Alec. “We will be endeavoring to minimise those costs, but there will be additional costs, yes. “Our focus at this moment is to ensure that this work is undertaken to the correct quality. Quality is paramount.” Alec said he was expecting a draft report from the assessor this week and he is working closely with them. A completion date for the project is still unknown, although Stoke Rugby Club and Stoke Tennis Club have been able to move into their part of the building.

Magician juggles back surgery cost Charles Anderson Editor

It seemed like a good idea at the time. After building his body up to successfully juggle a bowling ball and two bowling pins at the same time, local magician Steve Wilson, has suffered a double cervical prolapse. He was performing the trick at the Dunedin Fringe Festival when he felt his back go. “I felt it go ‘clunk’ and thought ‘this is different’.” Then his fingers started to go numb and he lost all the strength in his hand. After some phyiso, which didn't seem to work, it was advised that he have a CT scan which revealed the extent of his injuries. “Losing the feeling in my fingers was really scary,” Steve says. “I’ve spent literally thousands of hours working to perfect my sleight of hand skills and now I couldn’t even feel the cards in my hands.” At the 2017 New Zealand Magic

isn’t that great but coming from a height it can create some force.” He says that he was careful to ensure his body was up to the

task, first practising with medicine balls for three months before stepping up to real deal. “I was smart about it, I built myself up very slowly to make sure it was safe. "I had the muscles, just the shock absorbers blew out on me.” Adding to Steve’s woes, ACC has decided to only fund one level of his operation because of “degeneration” on his vertebrae. This leaves a shortfall of nearly $7000 which he is expected to pay out of pocket. The surgery will remove the prolapsed discs and insert a plate and screws over the two affected vertebrae. This will remove the pressure from the nerves in the neck and hopefully provide relief. “To not be able to work and to have to go through something so traumatic is stressful enough,” Steve says. “Then to be asked to pay $7000 you don’t have for the privilege just beats you down.” If he makes a full recovery, Steve is not sure whether the trick will remain in his routine.

Patrol in need of new car Locally Owned and Operated

While most of us are tucked up in bed sleeping soundly, Nelson’s eyes and ears are patrolling the streets. For more than a quarter of a century, the Nelson Community Patrol, formed by a team of concerned citizens to help protect people and reduce crime, has been watching over the city. Patrol member Robin Hall says that after numerous patrols, the group’s current car is a little worse for wear. The patrol is trying to raise $20,000 to replace their “tired” patrol car in order to continue their work. Robin says, while trying to find the funds, she realized how few people knew of their work. A typical patrol will start with a meeting with Police at 9.45pm, the volunteers often won’t finish a patrol until 3am. Robin says a usual patrol will involve checking particular areas for antisocial behavior,

places that tend go under the police radar. “If we see something that’s not right, we have a police radio and we will put in an immediate call to comms.” However, the patrol are sure not to put themselves in any compromising situations. “Our safety is our first concern, we rarely get out of the car unless we are asked to.” Robin says she and her husband are believers in a strong community and both care deeply about people which prompted them to join. “We had some time when we retired to give back to the community.” Any member of the public wishing to contribute towards the purchase of the car or interested in joining the patrol can do so at the Nelson Police Station. Robin says not many citizens are aware of their work. She says she wants locals to consider the need for the patrol. “Do you feel safer in the night knowing that we are out there?”

Fulton Hogan basketballers get Giant support A group of Nelson young people, with various learning disabilities, got the chance to get on court with their heroes last week when the Nelson Giants hosted a coaching clinic for the Fulton Hogan Basketball League. Finn Delany, Tohi Smith-Milner and Riley Bensemann, along with two players from the Giants development team, spent two hours showing the group tips and tricks to improve their skills on court at Saxton Stadium last week. The Fulton Hogan Basketball League, which is run by the Inclusive Sport Trust, was formed in 2006 primarily for players with supported learning needs and has 17 teams playing basketball this season. Inclusive Sport volunteer Heather Walker says a session like last

week's is about connecting the wider community. "It doesn’t matter what level of basketball you play at, it’s showing that you’re part of a big community. Local Frenchman celebrates Les Bleus Jonty Dine French local David Barbier was grateful to have the day off yesterday, so he could celebrate his country’s epic football World Cup win. David rose just before 3am Monday morning with his two young sons Melvyn and Tilio, to witness France claim its second World Cup crown, defeating Croatia 4-2 in Moscow. “I’m beautiful, I have a very good feeling today.” After seeing millions of people flood the streets of Paris in celebration, David says a part of him wishes he was back home joining the party. However, he plans on quietly toasting Les Bleus at some stage today. He says, with just over 30 per cent possession, it wasn’t a clinical performance. “But who cares how we won it, we won it. We are Champions. We have a second star on our jersey now and that will be there forever.” David says France’s journey to the final had been a tough run. “I have been following all the games, waking up early, it hasn’t been an easy one for France.” The local chef says, while he was picking France to progress past the group stage, he had no idea they would be making an appearance in the final. David left France in 1999, the year after their inaugural World Cup victory, but his passion for Les Bleus has never wavered. He says that after a long journey he was looking forward to catching up on a bit of sleep. “I can relax now.” Earlier in the week, David met with local football coach Davor Tavich, a native of Croatia, to discuss the relative prospects of their sides heading into the final. The pair both agreed that the two best teams in the competition were rightfully contesting football’s grandest prize. Unfortunately for Davor, it was David celebrating in the early hours of Monday morning.

Men get their shed: Great stuff. Took a long time coming but off with a hiss and a roar now. Good way for men to address men's issues. The stats tell us it is needed. Much of what passes as approaches to older men’s health, including their use of services, is based on social constructions of gender, often focusing on their reluctance to seek help. As such, negative stereotypes about older men are perpetuated, which may, despite best intentions, reinforce negative health behaviours among older men. In this presentation, I will argue that the health promotion community is well positioned to strategically free older men from the constraints of hegemonic masculinity through adopting a “social determinants of health approach” to frame professional responses to their health needs. I will support the ideas with evidence from three issues – social isolation, social exclusion and lack

of social support, which are addressed here as significant for older men. These issues will be discussed in light of long-term psychological stress, which can make some men more vulnerable to many serious illnesses such as cardiovascular, and immune system diseases and adult-onset diabetes. The specific design of the research is driven by an inductive qualitative method supplemented by a quantitative method in order to explore the impact of Men’s Sheds on the health of the men involved. Nelson Matters I am not surprised that the 2018 census got the lowest level of participation in more than 50 years. I received a wave of complaints from retirement villages that got only one census pack for over one hundred households, isolated rural communities who were just forgotten, people with disabilities who felt that they did not count, and student hostels that were ignored. The Government admitted this week that over 400,000 people were not counted. It has announced that the results are to be delayed from October to next March so as to enable officials to backfill the massive hole

To err is human, but to really stuff things up takes a computer. A common problem is technology nerds forgetting the human dimension. If Government is to make greater use of digital technology for public services, more needs to be invested in organisations like SeniorNet and support for people with disabilities and those in rural areas. Lionesses unleash flower power

A Lioness project to sell lily and freesia bulbs has raised $2000 towards a project to help cancer survivors. Haven Lioness Club sold the bulbs for three months in spring with the profit being donated to Pinc Next Steps. The organisation is a group exercise programme for people who have finished their main cancer treatment and want to take the next steps on their road to recovery. Margaret Ching of the Haven Lioness Club says the Rakaia Lions Lilies project sells bulbs to members of the Lions throughout the country with the proceeds going back to the community “With the support of Sollys Contractors, and Chris and Yvonne Bowater we have achieved a larger profit for this project this year.” They sell four large lily bulbs for $10 and 25 freesias bulbs

Burger Culture – Nelson’s only dedicated burger joint, celebrated its first birthday on Sunday, to say a big thanks to everyone in the region who has backed the business over the past year! As expected there was an awesome turnout for the afternoon party, with loads of prizes up for grabs and Burger Culture’s first-ever annual donut-eating competition! “When we first opened we estimated we would make at least 80 burgers a day, but on average we’ve been doing 220 burgers, so that’s around 120,000 burgers since we started!” says Operations Manager Zoe Williams. “At our 1st birthday celebrations we just wanted to say a massive thankyou to everyone who has supported us, from the customers to the people who set up, and our amazing staff who have been incredible on the journey with us. We are a family business – we own the Vic next door and when the adjacent building came up for lease, we seized the opportunity to start Burger Culture. We are originally from England; my brother and I went back there about two years ago and burgers were massive – really on-trend, we ate a lot! There was also a big street art culture so we wanted to bring that vision back and combine it with Nelson’s huge art culture – so it’s been great to merge the two cultures; our hometown and our new town. July 15th, 2017, and the name ‘Burger Culture’ came up from the theme of ‘nostalgia.’ We really wanted to create an environment where our age group, in the 20’s to 40’s bracket, would come in and feel like a kid again. Our décor reflects that vision; our local street art culture forming a big part of it, and also our music; we have old cassettes and cd’s on our back bar – things like that. It all links with the kind of nostalgic vibe we are wanting to create.” There were over $1000 worth of prizes up for grabs at the 1st birthday gathering including free donuts, free coffee, even a year’s supply of burgers! delicious indulgence! “As well as our valued customers, we are also really grateful to the hospo community and thank them for all their encouragement and support,” says Zoe. “We also really appreciate our staff who have worked like trojans and have been really passionate about Burger Culture. Our philosophy when hiring people was to bring people in who were really onboard with our vision – who didn’t regard it as ‘just a job,’ people who are going to turn it into a career, which is positive for the industry. Supreme builds celebrated A beautifully constructed concrete and glass home on the Port Hills has taken out the Supreme Award at the local Master Builders House of the Year competition. Scott Construction Limited won four regional awards at the competition. They were awarded the Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast Registered Master Builders 2018 Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award and Category win for the CARTERS New Home $1 million - $2 million award for their Nelson home. They were also awarded the Craftmanship Award. Dan Anderson Building was awarded the Nelson Marlborough & West Coast Supreme Renovation of the Year along with a Gold Award and Category win for the Renovation over $1 million award for their renovation of a Kaiteriteri home. Judges said the winning House of the Year delivered the owner’s vision. Using concrete and glass, they were able to capitalise on the spectacular views on top of Nelson’s Port Hills. “This was an extremely difficult undertaking to create a home from materials which you would expect to find in a high-end commercial development,” the judges said. “Precast panels have been carefully placed to provide robust

The Wisp treats audience members to the folktale of the wisp, which manifests as mysterious lights that can sometimes be seen floating above swamps. The show’s creator Lisa Allan says the story follows a character who decides to follow the lights. “Along the way they meet wacky characters and travel on unexpected modes of transport until eventually they come face-to-face with the Wisp,” she says. The rotating cast is made up of professional performers ranging from musicians, improvisers, actors and visual artists. “While the show is not explicitly made for very young children, they will enjoy the music and characters,” Lisa says.

The battle for Tasman club rugby supremacy will come to a head this weekend. Nelson will host Marist in what is set to be an epic showdown at Neale Park for the NPD Tasman Trophy. Both sides booked their berths in the big dance after hard-fought semi-final wins on Saturday. A first half blitz saw Nelson register a 37-19 win over Renwick at a muddy Neale Park, while Marist held off a strong challenge from Waimea Old Boys to sneak home 26-20. As he has done all season, Willy Havili ran the ship superbly for Nelson while blindside flanker Ethan Blackadder showed his class on return from Crusaders duty, leading the charge on defence. Nelson coach Kade Heke is delighted to be going to the final. "It’s awesome, I’m so proud of the boys and what they’ve done this season.”

The home side got on the board first in the eighth minute through winger Navarre Harbour, before tries to Havili, Blackadder and Isaiah Miller just before the break left Renwick with a huge mountain to climb in the second. While Renwick responded after the break, crossing the line three times, Nelson’s early blitzkrieg had put the result beyond doubt. Kade says he was particularly pleased with the way his side stood up in the second half as Renwick began to ask questions. He says it was the team effort that got them over the line and they would need to step up again if they are to win their 15th Tasman Trophy in 16 years. "It’s finals footy, everyone grew an extra leg and took their opportunities (in the semi) and will need to again on Saturday.” Meanwhile, at Jubilee Park, Marist and Waimea Old Boys played out a thriller. Marist skipper Tyler McKinnonStevenson says it was a very physical match and both sides gave it everything, yellow cards illustrating a fiercely physical

and intense clash. The green machine will now look to avenge their sub-union final defeat by Stoke and claim the coveted Tasman Trophy crown. “We are raring and ready to go and expect a tough match. Nelson are certainly no pushovers.” He says his team are “amping for the final”. The veteran lock of 100 plus appearances says Marist set their sights on the final at the start of the season. “It’s something that we wanted, we ended up losing the local club final but that has just made us hungrier.” Marist will have a fully fit squad to pick from for the final. “Anything can happen in finals footy.” Elsewhere in premier rugby, Wanderers defeated Stoke 36-21 in the Championship semi-final, to set up a clash with Central in the final after the latter defeated East Coast 43-19.

Coach Davor Tavich says he was pleased with the performance on a heavy pitch at Jubilee Park. "It made for a tough ask to play possession-based football, but the boys scored five great goals and I think we dominated." When the talented teen touch player steps onto the pitch in Malaysia later this year for the Youth World Cup, she will continue a Loft family legacy.
