The Tahunanui community is banding together to help save its centre after revelations that it lost more than $100,000 in less than a year. At a special meeting on Monday, those who used the centre voted

to commence proceedings to liquidate the society which had oversight of the society and its adjacent playcentre. Board chair Fiona Thomas told a well-attended meeting that it was identified in December that the financial situation was such that continuing services would put the society into an “unworkable situation”.

As of March 31, 2018, it had a trading loss of $53,000 and its cash assets had reduced from $141,000 to $43,000. “During the trading period from 1 April to 21 December this position worsened to the point where we were advised that we needed to cease trading as we were insolvent.” Currently the society owes

$54,000, which exceeds its cash assets by almost $47,000 – this is largely made up of the need to pay its staff. The community centre has a manager and seven other staff. They have set up a Givealittle page to help cover the shortfall. The centre put up a notice on its Facebook page in December saying that it had to close immedi-

ately. “Unfortunately, we were not aware of the precarious nature of our financial position until shortly before we pit the notice up and immediate followed the advice given – to cease trading,” said Fiona. “We are sorry that this has led to so much distress that this has

Bid to save community centre FROM PAGE 1 caused the community and the unfortunate timing.” Retired judge Oke Blaike chaired the meeting and said that it was convened to start the process of liquidation – which was the advice of an accountant. “Liquidation can be reversed if it subsequently found to not be the best option but enables a month to receive further financial advice.” It is understood that part of the trouble was that the community centre had a large government contract for three years, which recently ended. Once the grant money dried up, staff were then paid out of cash reserves rather than their contracts ending. The community centre and playcentre both sit on council land. There was concern from parents

of children at the playcentre, which was closed even as they headed back to work. Craig Vercoe of Nelson Tasman Kindergartens said that the organisation would offer a transitional service free of charge for any children affected by the closure. However, others were worried about the future of the community centre’s services. Cushla Vass, who worked as the centre’s receptionist said the whole centre was important. “You can’t believe the things that we have done for people here. I’m so proud of this community.” Mayor Rachel Reese said that as soon as council were made aware of the situation it was immediately acted upon – connecting the board with assistance and financial advice. “From a council perspective – across the whole Nelson com-

munity we understand the value of this centre for the community.” She said the centre was an important part of Nelson and the need for it was as present as ever. Manager of the centre Judy Robinson said that she had sent an email on December 7 asking council for help. It is understood that by that stage the society was effectively insolvent. Rachel said the board were not aware of the financial predicament as Judy had not raised it with them. “The board has had to get to grips with that very quickly … we have pulled out all the stops we can to help the board.” She told the meeting that the centre had hoped the retain a government contract but didn’t and then used funds to bridge the gap. Murray Leaning said as a community, the hub needed to stay

where it was. “Let’s not look back let’s look forward.” However, when it came time to vote there was confusion as to what they were voting for and who was allowed to vote. The motion to liquidate the society failed. However, then Murray explained that if the society was not liquidated then the board would likely face personal liability for its finances. He said that it seemed like the only option was to liquidate. The vote was then taken again and it passed. Another motion was put to make Murray the head of a working group to help figure out a way forward for the community centre and playgroup. Another meeting signing off on the liquidation is due in February with Murray and the working group to report back to the board in 21 days.

Sunshine crown is ours Charles Anderson The Nelson region has topped the country for sunshine hours – coming out with a whopping 2555 hours over the last year. According to the New Zealand Climate Summary, issued by Niwa yesterday, 2018 was the 2nd warmest year on record with an average temperature of 13.41°C. Four of the past six years have been among New Zealand’s warmest on record. The Nelson region experi-

enced the highest sunshine hours with 2555, followed by Bay of Plenty with 2518 hours and Marlborough with 2503 hours. Farewell Spit also had the highest mean temperatures since records began in the 1860s However, the report also noted that 2018 began on a wet note for much of the North Island and upper South Island, although the lower South Island was quite dry in January. Ex-Tropical Cyclones Fehi and

Gita brought well above normal rainfall to much of New Zealand in February. During Gita on 20 February, 148.4 mm of rain was recorded in Motueka-Riwaka between 4am and 6pm, or 173 percent of their February normal rainfall in just 14 hours. The highest air temperature of the year was 38.7°C recorded at Alexandra, followed by 37.6°C at Clyde and 37.4°C at Middlemarch, all of which occurred on 30 January.

Nelson shoppers keep cards in the wallet Sara Hollyman

Retail spending growth in the Nelson during December was one of the lowest in the country, when compared with the year before. Figures released by Paymark yesterday show that New Zealanders spent more than $6 billion through their network during December. Nelson shoppers spent a total of $122 million which comprised of 2.38 million transactions. This was country’s the lowest growth in Boxing Day spending, which

grew by 7.2 per cent compared with Wanganui’s 24 per cent growth. Paymark head of e-commerce, digital experience and marketing Darren Hopper says the December figures show an interesting trend in the payments’ landscape. “We saw widespread discounting which appears to have accelerated the trend towards lower average transaction value.” Darren says there is a growing use of scheme credit cards and debit cards which adds to the bank fees paid by merchants. “To further pressure on the bricks and mortar

merchants, e-commerce growth has accelerated of late.” Paymark saw a flat period during the beginning of December which they say is due to Black Friday Sales on November 23. They say they also saw a large growth in higher fee-incurring credit and debit cards during December, which were used in 50 million of the 120 million transactions across the country. Nelson Budget Services financial mentor Marina Gosnell says this time of year can be tough for many families and offers some advice on how to get back on

track if you have overspent during the holiday period. She says you should transfer the balance of your credit card to a new low rate card if possible. Marina says that all credit card debt should be consolidated to a lower rated personal loan. “Ask for the finance rate not the interest rate. Be aware that the interest rate may look good, but the other fees often added are sometimes as much as the interest rate. Personal loans are best done through the bank.” But if the above is not possible then she suggests talking to your

creditors. “Do not go into hiding. Make a workable plan with your creditors to pay back any arrears. If you are having problems with your creditors come in to see us at the Nelson Budget Service. Sometimes we can help with negotiations.” Marina would like people to remember that there is always a way through and says it’s important to make a plan for the coming year. The region’s emergency services managers are praising the mostly well-behaved people who descended into Nelson over the holiday period. Top of the South Road Policing Manager Inspector Dan Mattison says, overall, police saw courteous and considerate driving from most on the roads. “Obviously, Bay Dreams brought a huge influx of people to the region and I understand traffic was very busy, we appreciate the consideration that road users showed each other.” Dan says police staff from Canter-

bury were brought to the region to assist with the Bay Dreams festival and the influx of visitors to Kaiteriteri. “This was a great opportunity to share ideas and learn some new ways to do things.” He says there was a lot of effort around the region to increase road safety including the change of speed limits on State Highway 60 between Maisey and McShane Rds. “This is one of our most high-risk areas in the region and we appreciate the patience of drivers sticking to the new speed limits.” Dan says drivers still need to remain vigilant as the busy period on the roads is still not over. NEWS Island sale: Nelson’s iconic Pepin Island is up for sale for the first time in 22 years. The island was purchased in 1996 by German industrialist Viola von Hohenzollern for $2 million and was inherited by her daughter when she passed away in 2012. The island, accessed by a causeway through Cable Bay, is described as one of the most “unique property in New Zealand, if not the world”. With 1280 acres (521 hectares), it boasts a seven-bedroom farm house with three cottages near-by, a wool shed, multi-bay sheds, store-rooms and shelters across the island. Soft plastic recycling service halted Kate Russell Nelsonians have been left with sackfuls of soft-plastics with nowhere to go - except the landfill. The Love NZ Soft Plastic Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme was temporarily suspended on 31 December, with organisers citing over-supply and the need for an upgraded facility. The recycling bins at all Nelson supermarkets have gone, but there are plans to resume a sustainable service in April. The recycling bins were introduced in 2017 so shoppers could take back their used soft plastic, such as bread and frozen food bags, to supermarkets to be recycled. The material being put in the bins in supermarkets had been going to a company in Australia, to be turned into things like park benches, bollards and playground equipment. But organisers say they are collecting more soft plastic than they can currently process and a suspension to the service will

Photo: Kate Russell. give them time to work with existing processing partners to build capacity, as well as find new processing solutions. Nelson Environment Centre manager Anton Drazevic says it a shame for Nelson, as many people had got into good habits of recycling their soft plas-

tics. He discourages people from ‘stock-piling’ for fears of overwhelming the service if it resumes. “There is no easy answer - I wish I had all the answers for this.” Anton says, while it has been an amazing service to the com-

munity, there has been a silver lining to it stopping. “I loved the fact that it was so popular here, but it’s made people aware of how much waste they are generating. I think most people that did it were surprised by how much they accumulated.” Countdown Trafalgar Park manager David Smale says they were emptying their bin two or three times a day but, so far, customers have been understanding of the changes. Anton says there are several things people can do to reduce the amount of soft plastic they accumulate - including leaving their plastic packaging at the retailer. “When you buy a product, you can ask the retailer, ‘can I leave the packaging here?’ We need to work with retailers to get more products with less plastic.” He says people can also go to bulk bin shops where they can bring their own containers. “Now we know we produce so much, we need to work on reducing it.”

It was hot, it was loud, and it was sweaty, but it was undeniably a success. The sold-out Bay Dreams festival brought 20,000 music lovers to Trafalgar Park on Friday and promoters say they are hoping to be back in 2020. With international acts such as Cardi B and Tash Sultana, along with Kiwi favourites Katchafire and Shapeshifter, the crowds were kept happy - although shade, water and sunscreen were all in hot demand as the mercury soared above 26 degrees. Bay Dreams is one of the most popular festivals of the Kiwi summer music calendar, with the Mount Maunganui event selling out year after year. This is the first time it was held in the South Island. A pre-party and after-party took place on either side of the main event and camping was provided at Rutherford Park and Saxton Field from 3 - 5 January. Festival director Toby Bur-

rows hailed it as a "resounding success". "All the artists performed amazing sets and were all very happy. The event ran smoothly and the 20,000 strong crowd was incredibly well behaved. The venues worked perfectly and Nelson was a great host city. We definitely want to return in 2020 with an even better event." Nelson Police say they were impressed with the overall behaviour of concert-goers, with only six arrests over the three-day period. The operation to support the festival included a total of 90 police staff dedicated to the venue and campgrounds with 15 of these staff travelling from Canterbury. Inspector Paul Borrell, Area Commander for Nelson Bays commended revellers for their "buoyant and jovial mood". "Police had planned well in advance to provide and encourage a safe environment. It was especially noticeable how concert goers seemed to be looking out for each other, reporting and supporting others who became unwell or

distressed, which was fantastic," he says. Mayor Rachel Reese says Nelson delivered "superbly" and believes meticulous preparation was the key to the festival’s success. "Both the Trafalgar Centre and Trafalgar Park were outstanding venues and the festival director thought our facilities for hosting an event like this have been the best he has encountered anywhere in New Zealand. "Hosting 20,000 people in a population of 51,000 is no small feat." Rachel says it would be "wonderful" to see Nelson become a major destination on the touring circuit. "We’re already seeing an increase in international acts coming our way, with both UB40 and Bryan Adams performing in the coming weeks and months." Meanwhile, festival director Mitch Lowe says they made the right decision in choosing Nelson for the festival. "The city has so much to offer visitors outside of this event ... we’d like to thank Nelson for having us."

We say: Dreamers do prosper Credit where credit is due. When the announcement came through last year that Nelson would host up to 20,000 people at a summer concert, there were, no doubt, those who were waiting for it to turn into a disaster. There were likely some that wanted it to. There will always be a contingent of those who want things to stay the same. But what we saw when Bay Dreams came to town last week was Nelson at its aspirational best. It was an attraction that drew (gasp) young people. It was by all accounts very well organised – both by the promoters and by Nelson City Council. The temporary campgrounds at Saxton Field and Rutherford Park had almost an overkill of staff supervising festival goers. But the results speak for themselves. With only six arrests, it puts the official misbehaving on par with the All Blacks test. Sure, there was some over indulgence and some noise for a couple of days. But amid all that were thousands of well-intentioned young people, who made it a point to come to the region, spend money, have a great time and then go home and tell all their friends about it. The city for those few days had a hum about it that I don’t think has ever been seen. If that isn’t a win, then I don’t know what is. - Editor.

Light up Nelson winners crowned Sara Hollyman The results are in and the winners of Light Up Nelson have been decided. The Christmas lights competition had nine displays entered, however many more homes were still decked out for the festive season but chose not to enter the competition. Louis and Kristina Hornell from Oxford Court Motels in Richmond began putting their display up in November. They say the joy it spreads makes it all worthwhile and for their efforts they have been crowned Best House Display and People’s Choice Award. For each they received a $100 Mitre 10 voucher. Louis says they will be looking at building a new shed to store all the decorations in and will definitely be participating next year.

He estimates more than 6000 people came through their backyard to check out their display, with a 5m-tall blow-up Santa being the most popular item. Two lucky winners also took home $50 Mitre 10 vouchers for great houses which were in Allport Place and Cropp Place. Ben Henry was the lucky winner who won $100 Mitre 10 voucher just for voting. Organiser Nick Lanigan says, overall, it was a really awesome year. “We’ve had some people light up for the first time this year and overall it’s been fantastic.” The event was sponsored by Nelson App and Mitre 10 Mega. Winners of all categories were: Best House – display: Oxford St. Best house – Synchronised: Tory St. Peoples Choice: Oxford St.

TEDDY BEARS PICNIC AT ISEL PARK: If you went down to the woods on Sunday you were sure to see hundreds of children with their fluffy friends. The Teddy Bear's Picnic at Isel Park saw hundreds turning up for the annual event. There was no shortage of entertainment with Animal Park offering personal encounters with sheep and goats, face painting and music for the kids to get up and boogie to. St John were also offering their services to any teddy's with injuries, encouraging a large queue to wait to have their cuddly side-kicks checked over. But there is no reason for the city’s residential areas to be blasted for 11 hours. There were mitigating procedures recommended by the Commissioners who approved the consent for such events. But for those with families, tired children to settle to sleep, those ill and needing all the rest time they can get, the thumpa, thumpa, thumpa reaching out over the whole district was just an affliction. Drug driving petition launched after son killed Sara Hollyman Reporter

The family of a man who was killed by a drug-driver in Appleby have launched a petition to allow road-side drug testing on drivers suspected to be under the influence. Karen and Peter Dow, along with their son Angus, Nelson MP Nick Smith and retired Nelson Bays Highway Patrol Sergeant Terry Richards, launched the petition on the one-year anniversary of their son Matthew’s death. Matthew was driving from Kaiteriteri to Tahunanui on New Year’s Eve when the then 27-yearold Alicia Fulcher-Poole swerved into the wrong lane, colliding with his vehicle, killing him. Nelson MP Nick Smith says that New Year’s Eve should be a time of celebration and hope. “But for the Dow family it is the day their son was robbed of his life from a reckless meth user driving like a maniac.” Nick says Matthew’s death was one of seven fatalities in our district last year where methamphetamine or cannabis were identified as a cause or contributing factor. “Nationally there were 79 deaths

Photo: Sara Hollyman. from drug drivers, exceeding for the first time the 70 killed by drink drivers.” However, in the same year, there were just 152 convictions for drug-driving compared with 16,000 convictions for drunkdriving. Nick says he was disappointed that National’s bill to introduce random road-side saliva testing was opposed by Labour, NZ First and the Greens in October.

“They do not have a hope of achieving its zero road death target unless it changes its position on drug testing. The petition is about building momentum reform.” Matthew’s mother, Karen, says they don’t want anyone to go through what they’ve gone through. “If we can get the correct legislation and education to get this epidemic under control and

hopefully save lives, really that’s what we want to do. “It’s too late [for us], we can’t do anything, we can’t bring Matthew back. But I don’t want his death to be in vain and I don’t want another mother to have to go through ... to hear those words that I heard from the police, and wondering why.” Karen says she knew early on that they wanted to bring about change and this was the best way

they could think of. Nick says the crash was described by road safety police as one of the “most horrific” accidents they’d seen in decades. “I cannot pretend to understand the level of grief in losing a son, 23 years of age, and when I look at the data, I think the case is compelling.” Nick also says, with the Government making moves to liberalise access to drugs, it is more important than ever to give police the tools to deal with drug driving in the same way they would drink driving. The introduction of road-side drug testing would involve taking a saliva sample from drivers who appear to be affected by drugs and waiting a simple 3-5 minutes for the results. “I’m unconvinced by the argument that it would be too much of an inconvenience for drivers to be tested on the road,” he says. “First of all, I have confidence that police would only use it when they believe there is a need for it,” says Nick. He says the small inconvenience that innocent drivers would experience would be more than compensated by the improved safety of all other road users.

When Jim Pascoe emerged from Isel House dressed as Santa at the Isel Park Twilight Market on a late December night, he had barely taken a dozen steps before swarms of kids came barrelling up to him. Fortunately, he knows the drill Santa is a role Jim has played for more than five decades. It started when he was just 18-years-old. A department store in Whangarei needed a Santa and he says he “didn’t have to be dared twice” before accepting the role. Although the suit needed plenty of padding to fill it out, his enthusiasm made up for it. “They reckon I was the best Santa they ever had.” And so began a 57-year tradition. These days the suit doesn’t need to be filled up with pillows and the beard isn’t fake, but Jim says he still gets plenty of pleasure out of playing the role. “I just love and enjoy making happiness for families. If I can make one child’s day, I’ve done something.” Most of Jim’s years as Santa have been in Whangarei but the last couple of Christmas’s has been here in Nelson. He says the big crowds don’t worry him too

So, it’s not as simple as people think.” While new technology is making the choice for Christmas presents abundant, Jim says the requests are still quite traditional. “This year it really surprises me because the boys want trucks, Lego, slime, trains and the girls want unicorns, princesses, fairies, mermaids, and they both want Harry Potter and board games.” He says he has plenty of great stories from over the years. I was really nice to see such a turnaround.” The second wasn’t as heartwarming.

“One Christmas I came across five teenage girls and I said ‘ho ho ho what would you like for Christmas’. One of these girls looked at me and the tears started to drip out of her eyes and she said ‘Santa, could you please put my mum and dad back to together, just for Christmas’. Well, Santa had to turn around and have a

Tasman United will be hoping to spark a mid-season resurgence with two new additions to the squad. The side has had a forgettable campaign thus far, losing seven of its nine encounters. However, Tasman should be confident of a strong back end in the ISP Premiership as defender Jake Williams and striker Liam MacDevvit have been added to the ranks. The two new signings, along with Cristian Benitez all made their debut for Tasman during its 1-0 defeat to Canterbury United in Christchurch on Sunday. Jake’s signing also doubles as a homecoming having left Nelson at 13 to pursue his football career in Wellington. Liam on the other hand brings a wealth of experience playing professionally in England with Gosport Borough and Lewes. Liam. 26, adds a lethal dose of speed to the side having been a star athlete as a teenager. His personal best for the 100m a

staggering 10.82. He says he hopes his speed can act as an attacking weapon for the struggling side. “There are some very capable players in this team. The first half of the season wouldn’t have been what the boys wanted but there is time to turn it around.” Liam says whether he contributes one or five goals, the speedy striker just wants to install some confidence in the Tasman team. He has made the move north from Dunedin where he says he was struggling for game time. “I had a few injury niggles too, so I saw this and a great opportunity.” Jake has most recently enjoyed a stint in Wellington for the Phoenix Reserves where he played under current Tasman coach Andy Hedge. Returning to the region a little over a week ago, he says the Tasman environment is a very family friendly one. “That’s a big thing for me and it’s great to see so much support behind this club.” The 18-year-old left back has also represented his country and even netted a goal for the U17s against

Squance’s gamble pays off Peter Gibbs Local knowledge paid big dividends for Hayden Squance as he outwitted the field and slipped home for his first win of the season in the Port Nelson swims from the Nelson Yacht Club on Thursday. A field of 114 chose the long course of 1200m, heading 450m south into a frisky tide before a turn to the west took them through a rougher passage to the 'dolphin' navigation marker, then back to an offshore buoy near the finish line. As usual, the lead group stayed close together, getting the advantage of each other’s draft, but Squance took a chance with a line close to the shore, where the current can often be far less. It was a longer route, but the advantage became clear as Squance reached the first mark with a 10m buffer. The lead group spread into single file as the pace went on in pursuit, but to no avail. The leader held his nerve and

Series leader Luke Kelly (14.28) narrowly took third place ahead of Alex Swan

(14.29), Fergus Drummond (14.54), Oxford Bayley (15.14) and Ben Marshall (15.30). Abbey Smale (15.35) was next to finish, taking her fourth women's victory from the last five swims to lead the women's points table. One second

behind was the ultra-consistent Sophie Alexander in her fourth runner-up spot in the eight races so far. In each of the other races she has finished third. In age group competition, F30-39 leader Ruth Thomas suffered her first loss of the season, going down to top Christchurch triathlete Julia Grant. Ben Marshall (M3039), Christina Harris (F50-59), Hamish Neill (M50-59) and Janis Crampton (F60-69) continued their unbeaten records. Although Ben Van Dyke (M60-69) and Stuart Hebberd (M70-79) suffered a loss early in the season, both won their categories this week and look certain to go on to win the series, although there are still another nine swims to go before the season ends. Thirty-two swimmers took on the short swim of about 500 with Brooke Swan (6.58) edging home ahead of Corban Holland (6.59) and Tom Perkins (7.00). Full results at www.nelsonseaswims.co.nz.

SportS Speed skating: Nelson speed skaters continue to shine on the rink, setting records and claiming a haul of medals at recent competitions. The 2019 National Road Champs saw 17 Nelson Skaters compete with junior skater Jamie Manson won silver along with Blake McCormack while Holly Ward, Emily Olthof and Garth Jameson all claimed gold in their categories. Garth also won gold in the 1000m with Mikaela MacDonald winning the juvenile section. Day two saw more success for the skaters with Garth winning gold in the men’s masters and Mikaela setting two national records. Mikaela set record times in the Juvenile Girls 500m Heats and 3000m and also won gold in the 500m final bringing the region’s gold medal tally to nine. The team carried its momentum into the National Flat Track champs, also in Palmerston North. Tiara Richards found form setting a personal best and in the senior ladies 300m time trial. Mikaela continued to dominate the juvenile girls with another PB in the 300m and winning gold in the 800m Holly Ward also added to her haul with a firstplace finish in the junior girls 800m a strong challenge from two South Canterbury skaters to bring Nelson’s gold medal total to four.

The Marlborough Dolphins continued on their winning ways with a comfortable victory over Nelson College on Saturday. The match of the round saw a couple of outstanding individual performances resulting in an epic encounter between Stoke Nayland and ACOB while Wakatu’s woes continued as they were smashed by WTTU. A fantastic innings by BJ Barnett just slightly overshadowed an outstanding all-round performance by Ben Stark in a tense encounter at Marsden Rec. Stark, Tim O’Connor and Patrick Howes all batted superbly for Stoke Nayland as they posted a highly-competitive total. The ACOB bowlers toiled away largely without success in trying conditions. Stoke Nayland may have been left rueing the fact that they did not utilise their full fifty over allotment, but they will still have been confident going into the break with 230 plus. Barnett however was sublime in his 69-ball innings. He stroked 12 boundaries as well as bludgeoning three sixes in his cultured knock. Greg Chitty and Josh Simpson offered solid support, but once Barnett departed it required Reuben Smith to bring ACOB home with a big six. Stark backed up his fine half cen-
