Local lads set canyon record Charles Anderson They were searching on a topographical map for a long time before they found it. There were lines stacked on top of each other – it was steep, that was for sure. There was no record of it ever being fully mapped and no record that it had ever been done. Could it be canyoned? It was a spot in the Richmond Ranges, inaccessible by anything but a helicopter. It was 1200m high and contained an unknown number of waterfalls. It was marked by kiwicanyons.org as a “potential canyon” requiring a “serious undertaking”. For a group of Nelson mates wanting to put their canyoning skills to the test, it was perfect.

Local lads nail record breaking canyon expedition FROM PAGE 1 The sport involves descending creeks – setting anchors, then abseiling and jumping down waterfalls until you reach the bottom. If they managed to pull the expedition off the group would have done the highest descent ever in New Zealand. So, six months ago, the plan was hatched. “We had done a couple of other ones and the boys loved it,” says James Scoltock, owner of indoor climbing centre Vertical Limits. “They were pretty keen to hit something big.” So James pushed his friends, Neil Molloy, Daniel Penney and Bodhi Bettjeman, to train for the expedition. Then they brought on cameraman George Guille to document it all. They all went through the skills they needed to carry out the

task. They planned to do the descent this month, doing a flyby in a friend’s airplane to get a better view. It was big but doable, they thought. But James was getting restless and he knew of others in the canyoning community who had their eye on this as-yet unnamed creek down Johnstone Peak. “I said ‘let’s just do it next week’.” It would be his 36th birthday. So, on December 13, armed with donated gear from Aspiring Safety, they boarded a helicopter and headed for the peak. “The first waterfall was on the map,” says Daniel Penney. “But when we got up there we saw there were two more right after it. It was pretty clear that nobody had ever been here.” George says that was the appeal -- and the challenge. “You just don’t know what you are going to find. Even with rope

The canyon that five local men travelled last month. Photo: George Guille. lengths we were just estimating. The biggest thing is the unknown.” Then there was the reality that after you finished the first abseil, there was no going back.

“A couple of us are reasonable climbers, but you can’t climb a waterfall,” says Neil. It also wasn’t clear how long the descent would take. James says he was prepared to spend a night, cold and wet, in the bush. “But I don’t think anyone else was up for that.” They had done a food drop earlier – walking up as far as they could from the other direction. But by the time they arrived, possums had got there first. “All there was were wrappers,” says Bodhi. They pushed on into the early evening. Eventually, after 13 hours, they walked out. They had descended three, 120 metre waterfalls and 10 others between six and 30 metres. For all the large ones they had to drill and set their own anchors.

“It’s pretty insane what we did,” says James. “It’s just a tight little crack in the side of the mountain. It was a monster.” Bodhi says: “The best thing is that we are all mates anyway, so it was just a great day out. It was a great way to celebrate James’ birthday.” They have been in touch with the New Zealand Canyoning Association which told James that since they were the first to descend it, they could name it. “It’s really nice to be put our name on a first descent,” says James. “That’s pretty cool.” But as for the canyon? George says, being so high “Vertical Limits,” in honour of James’ idea and his business, could work. “But it was a team effort,” James says. “So it will be a group decision.” As will the next expedition they plan.

The two will now share the honours. While Rachel was unavailable for comment, councillor Ian Barker said it was great to see the region return to its rightful place as the sunshine capital. “I applaud the work done by Rachel Reese to ensure fairness in the way the sunshine data is collected. All six major cities had clocked up their usual annual rainfall before the end of September and had been on track for record wet years. The highest temperature was recorded at Wairoa and Ashburton on February 6 with 35.5C.

Family puppet show vows to wow

Nelson Sea Scouts win national regatta Kate Russell Nelson’s Iron Duke Sea Scouts are celebrating after bringing home the national silverware for the first time in 50 years. The scout group have won the 28th National Scout Regatta, which was held in Onepoto Bay, Porirua from December 29 – January 6. For the country’s oldest Sea Scout Group, founded in 1921, it’s a pretty big deal. The last time they took out the title was in 1967.

“We are ecstatic that we’ve won again after all this time,” says the group’s coordinator, Glen Kelly. The award is the prestigious ‘Jellicoe Trident’ - a sterling silver trident which was donated in 1924 by Lord Jellicoe, who was Governor-General at the time. Glen says the regatta is only held every three years, and this year saw 19 scout groups from around the country take part in a range of sea, land, and offsite activities. Although Iron Duke has

an impressive 150 members, just the 42 oldest (aged between 10 and 18 years) competed at the regatta. “We were tested on everything we do as sea scouts – sailing, rowing, swimming, kayaking, camping standards, seamanship and lifesaving. All of those factors and disciplines are then added up, and we came out on top,” says Glen. “They all loved it – we all had a ball, even when the weather bomb hit right at the end and we had to

spend the last night in the Titahi Bay Intermediate School classrooms.” Glen also gives credit to group leader Peter McGowan, who has worked hard to lead the scouts to their success. “It’s a nice feather in his cap,” he says. The Iron Duke Sea Scouts are based at Port Nelson and offer local young people a fun and challenging marine-focused programme. A local creative couple are bringing a fantastical new family show to life using masks, shadows and puppets. Birdlife Productions, made up of Roger and Bridget Sanders, created Heron’s Feather on the back of last year’s Dunedin Fringe festival where another show was nominated for various awards. The new production will play across the region, from central Nelson all the way to Golden Bay. Bridget says ‘Heron’s Feather’ is a story of loss, belonging and unlikely friendship. It tells the tale of a “moon maiden” who tumbles out of her cradle - from the Moon - landing in the nest of an old White Heron. The show features original music by Wellington musician David Sanders and has no spoken words. Bridget says her intention was to create a children’s show in New Zealand that could be taken to any part of the world and still be understood by the children there. “I wanted to make a show

TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC: Children are being encouraged to grab their teddy bears and come on down to the annual Teddy Bears Picnic at Isel Park next Sunday, 14 January, from 11am – 1:30pm. Model engineers steamed into Nelson for the international Steam & Cinders ’18 convention last week. With over 300 attendees from across New Zealand and the world, the Nelson Modellers Pond was buzzing with the crowds of people and the chug of locomotives. Starting in Nelson in 1978, the biennial convention travels around the country with local clubs taking turns to host. Nelson Society of Modellers president Nigel Gibbs says it is great to get so many enthusiasts together for the five-day convention. “It’s about all of us getting together as a group of engineers with a common passion, talking rubbish, having a look at other people’s models and having a good time.” Powered by steam, electricity, petrol, and diesel, the model trains chugged around the track, taking thousands of people for rides. “We must’ve given over 3000

and talking to all the people who come up saying ‘Wow! What drives it?’.” Tony says the variety of locomotives has captured the attention of enthusiasts and general members of the public alike. “A lot of these trains don’t come

out of the woodwork very often and the workmanship is incredible, some have taken 23 years to build so it’s been amazing to see them all.” The convention ran from Thursday through to Monday and will not be hosted in Nelson for another 8-12 years.

LOCAL MAN DROWNS IN MAITAI: Police have released the name of the Nelson man who drowned in the Maitai River on Thursday, he was Anthony Eynon, 56. Mr Eynon’s body was found by tourists who called police, who later recovered the body. He had been swimming at the popular Girlie’s Hole. “Our thoughts are with his family at this time,” said a police spokesperson. “His death has been referred to the Coroner.”

Out of the Blue not out of the rain Andrew Board The bands still rocked, the dancers still bopped but the rain did put a dampener on the inaugural Out of the Blue festival at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. The festival, featuring ten top New Zealand bands, started under blue skies at 1pm, but by 5pm the wind and rain had well and truely arrived, and the crowds didn't live up to the 8000 touted a month ago, or the 5000 hoped for a week ago. For those who did brave the rain, the music was excellent, as was the set-up with two giant screens

and stage, showing that it was only the rain that dulled what was otherwise an organisational success. As for total crowd numbers? An official figure hasn't been released yet, but organiser Stu Allan from Showcase Nelson told Nelson Weekly that he estimated between 3000 - 3500 people at the peak time. "Obviously that number thinned down when it got wet and cold," says Stu.

Bands to perform included The Eastern, Stellar*, Hobnail, The Warratahs, Andrew Fagen and the People, L.A.B and The Harris Brothers. Stu says, although numbers were down, the execution of the event "worked perfectly". "Most people came away saying it

was the best organised event they had been to and we had great feedback from the crew and performers," he adds. "I'm very proud of my team - we delivered exactly what we expected." And will the event be back in 2019?

Stu says that is still yet to be decided, but he is hoping it will happen again. "It's all subject to the wrap-up process. We will be having meetings with sponsors and investors in the coming weeks, but the intent is for us to be staging it again next year."

Variety the key to hospice vehicle show Andrew Board Founders Heritage Park will be petrol-head heaven later this month when the Nelson Tasman Hospice Vehicle Display rolls into town. All vehicles "of interest" are invited to come and take part in the show, from vintage cars and motorbikes, to hot rods, restored military vehicles and race cars. "It doesn't matter what it is," says organiser Dave Verry. "We want to show a bit of everything to give those coming a bit of variety." Dave says this is the second show that has been held for the hospice, with last year's efforts raising more than $5000. This year, he says the show has been moved from April to January to capture more of the tourists in town for the summer holidays. "We've had great support so far from local vehicle owners, I've had several groups say that they'll come along so we should get at least the 170 vehicles that we had last year." For vehicle owners wanting to take part in the January 14 show, the cost is $5 per vehicle and they can find out more by calling Dave on 027 447 1300. For people wanting to head along to view the vehicles the cost is $5 per adult, or $10 per family. Public viewing opens at 10am and runs until 2pm. All proceeds from the day will go to the Nelson Tasman Hospice.

As far as gym commutes for a workout, Lee Hart’s is a likely record breaker. It took nine days for Lee and some friends to tramp into Everest base camp. They endured below freezing temperatures while carrying all their own clothes and sleeping bags. Most of them succumbed to altitude sickness and food poisoning along the way. They eventually arrived

at the Himalayan camp, 5360 metres above sea level. “It was a battle,” admits Lee, who grew up in Nelson and now works in London as a personal trainer. But last week, instead of taking a breather, Lee then rallied his eight-person team to engage in a 30-minute, high intensity workout. Also watching was an “expert” – required by Guinness World Records to ensure that Lee’s experiment was indeed the world’s highest-ever fitness class.

“It was just a Sunday thought,” he says from in Kathmandu, Nepal. “These ideas come and go and you don’t really action them. The idea was to actually pursue it and hopefully inspire others to want to act on theirs.” Lee applied to break the record several months ago in London. After ensuring he did everything by the book, Lee is now waiting for official verification for his record. He went to Nelson College before studying physical ed-

ucation. He originally went to London to play rugby but that morphed into becoming a personal trainer. “But this kind of venture wasn’t about me being a world record holder, it was about inspiring others to pursue their dreams.” Lee says the walk back down was a lot easier – taking only three days. But he is still reflecting on his and the team's achievement. “It shows ordinary people can do extraordinary things if they want to.”

Queens Gardens to come alive with art

Kate Russell Queens Gardens is set to be transformed into an outdoor art gallery when Art Group Nelson holds its annual exhibition next Saturday. The one-day-only event has been a Nelson institution for more than 30 years and around 50 exhibitors will be selling their original works – ranging from paintings to woodwork to garden art. For member Manfred Sauck, it will be his first exhibition at the gardens. Manfred moved to New Zealand from Germany in 2000 and says, since he has retired, he has been able to spend more time on his art work. He describes his paintings as “realistic” mixed medium, based on watercolour which he enhances with oil pastels. He draws inspiration from photographs he takes of New Zealand and global landscapes – including many of the Nelson region. “I want to capture nature as it is,” he says. Manfred says the exhibition is the perfect way to showcase his work and he is also looking forward seeing other artists’ work. Art Group Nelson holds two exhibitions each year - Queens Gardens in the summer and a winter exhibition at the Stoke Memorial Hall in June. The Queens Gardens Art Exhibition is on Saturday, January 20, from 10am – 5pm. If wet, it will be held on Sunday 21 January. Lighting up Nelson I wish, through your column, to thank you for your brilliant article on the front page of the December 12 issue, as well as a thank you to the many hundreds of folk, big and small, who came to visit our Christmas light display this year, and went away with smiles of delight on their faces as they left. We consider our display this year a success, after all the positive comments that folk made to me out on the street. Along with the number of cars that came to visit us being similar to previous years, many revisiting several times. A special thank you also to the number of folk who anonymously left complimentary Christmas cards and letters in our letterbox, as well as the occasional gift that found its way into our church collection the following Sunday, this was very much appreciated. I also must thank our neighbours for their tolerance, considering the increased traffic, and noise in our street. Without the continual supply of materials from Nelson Recycling Centre I would have had a difficult time constructing the display, so thank you. Finally, I would like to thank Kelly Holmes for initiating the list of households who were decorating their properties, and promoting

Wislang back on board ocean race Andrew Board Reporter

Former Nelson sailor Daryl Wislang is back in his happy place. Back to four hour sleep patterns, back to making his breakfast on bended knee as he gets thrown around by giant waves, and back in the lead. Daryl, a former Waimea College head boy and Nelson Yacht Club junior, is currently racing for team Dongfeng in the Volvo Ocean Race, the toughest sailing race in the world. It is Daryl’s fifth Volvo Ocean Race, winning the last one with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and previously sailing with Camper Team New Zealand, among others.

Daryl is a watch captain on Dongfeng, which puts him in charge of sailing the boat in the direction the skipper sets. There are two watch captains on each boat so they rotate shifts. This year’s race started in Spain on October 22. It is broken into 11 legs with the racing finishing at The Hague in the Netherlands in late June. It is due to arrive in Auckland in late February, where leg 7 will start from. Daryl was meant to race every leg of the race but had to miss leg 3 from Cape Town to Melbourne after he suffered a bulged disc in his back just hours before they were due to leave. “Six fifty the morning of start, I did it. 7.30am I had advised the team and that I didn’t think it was that good. 9.30am I saw a physio and he confirmed what it was. 10.30am the decision was made for me not to go and the boat left the dock at 12.20pm. So it was a pretty chaotic morning.” He says he felt like he was letting the team down. “I said to the guys, I don’t want to make the decision, I don’t want to say I can’t go. You have to make the decision for me.” The decision to leave Daryl behind was made significantly easier by the fact that Dongfeng

I felt I was letting the team down.” And how he hurt his back is something most parents could sympathise with. “I was bending over to help my daughter Pearl take off her nappy and I just twisted the wrong way.” After Dongfeng left Cape Town Daryl made his way back to Wellington, where he lives with his wife and two children, and started physiotherapy to get fit for the next leg of the race. It worked. Daryl’s team left Mel-

Currently, the team is leading the leg and Daryl says the ultimate goal is to win the entire race. “That’s why I joined this team. On paper it was going to be a strong team, they started early, they had the budget and time was on our side, and Charles [Caudrelier, the skipper] is a very smooth operator.” Along with navigating the world’s great oceans, managing your own schedule requires a significant amount of mental toughness, says Daryl. “To be able to switch between your on-watch and your offwatch is critical. Because if you

can’t switch off you don’t get the sleep you need and you fall into the big cycle of sleep depravation and start making bad decisions.” Physically, he says it is “horrendous” at times, even simple tasks like making breakfast can be almost impossible. “You can imagine kneeling on the kitchen floor pouring your cereal and someone’s shaking you every two seconds as you’re trying to keep the milk in your bowl.” But while Daryl admits he “loves” the race, he’s keen to switch his focus after this edition to the America’s Cup, which will be in New Zealand in 2021. “I’d like to give the America’s Cup a crack. It’s something that I haven’t completed and it’s in New Zealand next time. I’d definitely like to give that a go and immerse myself in it and see how that dynamic works. It’s a different disciple and a different way of thinking. “I’ve never been in the right position to get involved in it, but now is as good a time as any.” The current leg of the Volvo Ocean Race is due to land in Hong Kong towards the end of this month. House prices grow fastest in Nelson Nelson had the biggest house asking price increase in the country, according to new figures released by realestate.co.nz. According to the national house sale website, the asking price for a home in Nelson and its surrounding areas increased by 11.3 per cent to $618,712. It was followed by Marlborough, up 10 per cent to $479,288, and the West Coast up 8.7 per cent to $265,396. The figures are on the back of national figures that highlighted an all-time low for new house listings across New Zealand in December, helping to drive up asking prices. New listings were down 6.2 per cent, compared to the same month last in 2016.

Rare race bike a star of motorcycle show

Andrew Board When Murray McLean saw a rare British motorbike for sale in a magazine, he knew he had to have it. Murray has owned countless bikes over the years and even had his own motorbike shop for decades in central Nelson, but the 1962 Matchless G50 CSR struck a cord. "When I saw it advertised I couldn't believe it, there's just none

around. It's one of the rarest bikes on the planet." Nevermind that it was France and Murray didn't speak a word. "As soon as I saw the ad I called the guy up, and luckily he spoke English. For the last 50 years, Peta Spooner has been introducing people to the rewards of dance, her passion shared by fellow teachers at the Peta Spooner Academy of Dance. A focus on professionalism and excellence is balanced by the academy’s aim to develop well-rounded dancers who are gracious, considerate and demonstrate a positive attitude. “We give equally to all our students, no matter what their skill level, and we hope that our students have happy memories of their days dancing at the academy,” says Peta. Sandy Payne was convinced that the man on the phone telling her she’d won a brandnew car was a hoax. But he was persistent and, after several calls, Nelson-based Russells Curtains & Blinds Mobile owner Bill Liddell managed to convince Sandy that he was legitimate and that she had, in fact, won a brand new Ssangyong Tivoli. “I thought it was a scam, I really did, but then he mentioned Nikki Lillig, the saleswoman I bought curtains and blinds

from and I thought, ‘this is for real’.” Sandy says it’s the first time she’s won anything. “I’m elated, what a Christmas present! It’s lovely, I’ve seen a picture of it online but actually seeing it… it is pretty impressive.” Bill says the company ran the competition from October through to early December with over 2000 entrants nationwide.“We had a huge amount of interest but unfortunately only one person could win it, and Sandy was that fortunate person. “She was super excited when

she realised it wasn’t a hoax,” he laughs. “It’s fabulous to hand over the keys and to give them to someone who really appreciates is even more important.” The car was purchased brand -new by Russells through the Car Company Nelson. “It’s a cool car, we’ve got them as part of our fleet.” Russells Curtains & Blinds Mobile have 26 vans travelling the roads from Bluff right up to Kaitaia, selling handcrafted and tailor-made New Zealand curtains and blinds.

Nelson's reputation as a breeding ground for top lawn bowlers will have only grown at this week's Bowls NZ National Open Championships in Dunedin, with the region laying claim to four of the top six titles. World Champion Shannon McIlroy, of the Stoke club, won the men's singles title, with former United Club bowler Jo Edwards claiming the women's singles crown. In the doubles, former Stoke member Ali Forsyth won the men's title with Gary Lawson. In the fours, a composite team of Shannon, Ali, Gary and Justin Goodwin also won. It could have been another championship for Nelson with Amy McIlroy's composite team losing a very tight womens fours final. For Jo, the win was her fifth na-

Stoke/Nayland scored 243 and ACOB were 126/7 when the rain arrived, handing the hosts the win via the Duckworth Lewis system. In Brightwater, Wanderers beat Wakatu by 44 runs after posting just 107, while the round's other game between Waimea Toi Toi United and Nelson College was abandoned by umpires.

Lewis claims a double at Street Races Andrew Board Nelson builder Johnny Lewis claimed a pair of titles at the Port Nelson Street Races last week. Johnny won the Formula 3 and Bears classes to finish the best of the Nelson riders in front of several thousands fans. He says he was "thrilled" with the two titles. "It was a terrific day really, once it dried up the track got faster and it was pretty exciting to be a part of."

Johnny says he races all over New Zealand so it was nice to be on his "home" track. "It's great to have some friends come down, it really is my favourite event of the year." He says the rain made the track "tricky" early in the day, but as it dried out it got easier. Dan McKenzie of Christchurch won the King of the Port title, which sees the top riders from throughout the day face-off in the day's final race.

In the Formula One class it was Jayden Carrick of Whanganui who took home the title. Organiser Adrian Curtis says the day was a huge success for the event, that took a year off in 2016. "The event was really good," says Adrian. "The key things are that we were able to get the event up and running again after having a year off. I think a lot of people thought that would be the end of it but a lot of work from a lot of people

have helped make it a success. "I'm also so proud of our volunteers who make this event happen. "They stand in the rain just to help make this event run, it's pretty bloody amazing." He says the event will be back next summer. "People love it, the riders go very quick and its exciting to see. So we're keen to continue our good relationship with the Port, and as it expands and grows the race will

evolve as well." He hopes the event will become part of a "Speed Week" that could encompass a range of other events like drag racing, rallycross, motor-cross, as well as car and motorbike displays. Another highlight for Adrian was the number of first-time racers at the event. "More than half were competing here for the first time, so it was great to see so many come here and give it a go."

The last round of the Club TQ Championship was a hotly contested one. Alicia MacLauchlan was going for a three-peat, but it meant missing a round of the Hydralink War of the Wings held in Cromwell. With points leader Darkie Armstrong out after a concussion from the previous meeting, consistency was the name of the game to secure the required points. Two 5ths in the heats and a 3rd in the feature gave her the title once again by 28 points. There were a few incidents to avoid, including a rollover in heat 1, which put a couple of cars out. Morgan Frost took the win and gained enough points over the meeting to secure 3rd overall. Feature specialist Jayden Corkill also ticked over enough points to claim 2nd spot. Primary school cricket tournament in Nelson New Zealand's oldest cricket tournament kicked off in Nelson yesterday with teams from around the Mainland battling it out for the South Island Primary School title.

Black Caps Ross Taylor and Colin Munro officially opened the tournament at Saxton Oval on Sunday with games to be played throughout the week, until Friday's final.

The tournament is for year 8 students and most of the games will be played in Stoke, in particular Greenmeadows. The last time Nelson hosted the tournament was 14 years ago.

Craig Lautenslager won last Monday’s Shoe Clinic New Year’s Day 10K Run in 31min10sec, but it was not his first run of the new year. That came at midnight with Craig’s father Greg and a younger brother on the dark roads near his home in Hope. It was a two-mile run from one-year-to-the-next, a tradition his father started when he was in high school 43 years ago. Craig first ran 'one-year-to-thenext' 10 years ago at age 14 with his father, during a teammate’s 21st birthday party off Lower Queen Street. The midnight run was much easier than the run 15 hours later. Craig, an Athletics Nelson runner who won the 2017 New Zealand cross country and half marathon titles, faced 25 degree temperatures on the out and back trail from the Monaco Domain. He hit the turnaround point in 14min52sec and also a stiff headwind. "I wanted to break 30 minutes,” Craig said.

Hayden Squance was third in 37min24sec. Paula Canning of Athletics Nelson won the women’s 10K for the fourth straight year, in 40min25min. Former winner Colette Read was second in 44min1sec. Matthew Bowen won the men’s 5k in 17min55sec, and Fran Kerse won the women’s 5K in 24min2sec. The men’s race walk winners were Allen West in the 10K (67min8sec) and Steve Pauling in the 5K (33min0sec). The women’s race walk winners were Sharyn Davey in the 10K (68min20sec) and Wendy Healey in the 5km (32min19sec). A total of 116 runners and walkers finished the race.
