Nelson mayor Rachel Reese marries long-time partner Andrew Board You couldn’t accuse Nelson mayor Rachel Reese of not keeping at least one of her campaign promises, after she tied the knot on Friday evening. At Rachel’s re-election launch at the Boathouse in June, she finished her speech with the promise to marry her partner of 12 years and campaign chairman Richard Harden, after the election.

“You’ve made it possible for me to succeed,” she said at the time. “And I promise you, as soon as this election is completed, we will find a weekend to get married.” That weekend was the one just gone, with the pair married at the Suter Art Gallery in front of 70 close family and friends, on January 27. Rachel says the wedding plans were a “whirlwind” with it all coming together in a matter of

weeks. “We had a brilliant wedding day and we couldn’t be happier. We asked our friend Bishop Richard Ellena to marry us and he made our day very special for everyone who attended.” The vows were exchanged at 5.30pm on Friday, and Rachel confirmed that she will be taking her new husband’s surname. “Yes, it is Mr and Mrs Harden for my personal life. Professional

life stays with Rachel Reese for a little while longer.” Rachel says her highlight was the best man’s speech, delivered by Richard’s son Joel. “It had everything, plenty of laughs and tears.” The newlyweds plan to honeymoon at their favourite camping spot in a tent before Rachel returns to run the city next week. Ghost stories were shared at St. Barnabas church, and at Seaview Cemetery local historians offered a tour, where people could learn about the local identities who are buried there. At Saxton Oval, local cricket personality Jock Sutherland and the Ramblers took on The Cricketers Club of New South Wales, and at the Railway Reserve ac-

tors brought to life a 1950s viewpoint of the demise of Nelson’s railway, while The Get Moving team provided help with bike maintenance and how to make the most of Nelson’s bike paths. Other events were held at Stoke Library, and many finished the afternoon off at Nayland Pool, who offered $1 entry for the afternoon.

School’s back and so are uniforms Kate Russell

The new school year starts this week for secondary school students and Nayland College is set for the biggest shake up, with Year 11 senior students wearing a uniform for the first time in almost 15 years. The process has taken over a year but principal Daniel Wilson says he’s happy with the outcome, which will see students choose from a range of formal and informal options including a new black check shirt or blouse and polo shorts and blazers. The Stoke college will also welcome 14 new staff and a slightly increased roll, thanks to more Year 9 students than the previous years. Around the region, it seems most high schools have recorded modest increases to their rolls. Nelson College’s roll is sitting at 1201 for

They also have more international students and year nine students – there will be 244 this year, compared to 231 in 2016. Headmaster Gary O’Shea says their roll growth is putting a strain on rooms. “We have had a classroom block built in the past two years and

a prefab classroom brought in when we were doing earthquake strengthening, and these spaces will be full in 2017,” he says. “Any more roll growth will necessitate additional classrooms.” Nelson College for Girls principal Cathy Ewing says, that while they don’t know their final student numbers yet, the roll looks to be

similar to last year. “Year nine enrolments look to be on par with 2016, but there are continuing enrolments happening,” she says. The college saw several retirements of longserving staff last year, so will have a number of new staff beginning this week. Waimea College principal Scott Haines says they start the year on Tuesday with a record roll of 1577 students, up from 1503 last year. The number of international students has also increased from 50 last year to a record high of 60 this year. “We are absolutely at capacity now,” Scott says. “I feel really sorry for the 48 out-of-zone students we had to turn away. Garin principal John Maguire says they are also growing with the starting roll increasing from 505 last year to 530 this year, including 38 internationals.

Five Buxton Square businesses have pitched in to bring an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the busy city car park for the general public to use. MiGym, Aboki, HotHouse, John Brydon from First Class Accounts and Aaron Marshall from PhysEx Rehab Clinic have all contributed funds towards the life saving equipment, which is located in a smash-box on the wall outside MiGym. MiGym’s Trevor Voyce says the idea was sparked after losing a close friend to a heart attack last year. “We couldn’t finance the full amount ourselves, so looked for like-minded businesses in the area,” he says. And those he approached had no hesitation in helping out. They started the process of ordering it last June through Jennian

Nelsonians ride into bike challenge

Kate Russell Plenty of Nelsonians will be swapping their cars for bikes in February, with the first Aotearoa Bike Challenge kicking off across the country tomorrow. The challenge has been launched by the New Zealand Transport Agency and is based on the global ‘Love to Ride’ programme, supporting kiwis to get on their bikes. One 10-minute journey by bike is all it takes to participate, it is free to register and there are some great prizes to be won. So far, more than 920 organisations and 9102 New Zealanders have signed up for the month-long challenge and registrations will remain open until 28 February. As well as encouraging individuals to cycle, the challenge is suited to workplaces that can enter as a team. The number of rides clocked up by a team contributes towards the efforts of the organisation as a whole, and those who sign up will compete against each other

And it’s not about who can ride the most kilometres, but who can encourage the most people to give cycling a try. One of the Nelson teams participating is a keen group of teachers and support staff from Nayland Primary School. Teacher Ben Ward says that so far there are about 25 people involved - and that number looks to keep growing. Ben says he usually

aims to ride to and from school three plus days a week, with a longer ride in the weekend. “We’re doing [the challenge] to encourage other teachers, students and families to make the most of Nelson’s amazing outdoors and get on their bikes,” he says. “Nelson is an amazing place to ride. We have so many cycle ways and shared paths that you can get to most places that you might want to go. We are so lucky to have such easy access to the

outdoors - we need to make the most of it.” NZ Transport Agency National Cycling manager, Dougal List, says the challenge is a great time for anyone to give cycling a go. “Whether you have some experience in the saddle or are completely new to cycling, the challenge provides riders with support and motivation and the knowledge that thousands will be doing it with them.” To find out more, visit www. lovetoride.net/nz

CATHEDRAL NEEDS TO BE SAVED, SAYS MP: Nelson MP Nick Smith is determined that the earthquake-prone Christ Church Cathedral should not have the same fate as the crumbled cathedral in Christchurch. Announcing last week that he, alongside church trustees, will establish a trust to fund the earthquake strengthening of the cathedral, Nick hopes the work will be complete within five years. “Nelson’s Cathedral, with the demise of Christchurch’s, is the most visited in New Zealand. It is an iconic building sited at Piki Mai and is one of our most important landmarks. We need to learn from Christchurch’s fate and get on with the strengthening work so as to secure its future for our city,” says Nick. Built in 1929, the cathedral is earthquake prone and currently unaffordable for the diocese to insure. An estimated $5-8 million is needed to upgrade it to 80 per cent of the new building standard.

Police urge drivers to take care: Tasman district police are urging motorists taking car trips this long weekend to take extra care, following three minor crashes near Nelson and Blenheim. Last week, police were called to the scene of a crash on the Kohatu-Kawatiri Highway, the driver lost control of their car and it rolled. Not long after this accident, two cars were involved in a crash on the Kawatiri-Murchison Highway. A similar collision also happened near the entrance to the airport in Woodburne, near Blenheim. While those involved in these crashes received only minor injuries, it is a reminder for motorists to always check their speed and to drive to the given conditions. “If you are unfamiliar with the route you are travelling, make sure to take your time and to stop regularly along the way.”

Hidden rocks all the rage Locally Owned and Operated

Collecting, painting, hiding, and finding rocks is the latest craze for preschoolers and their parents. Local mum, Emma Gray saw the activity taking off in Whanganui and brought it down to Nelson, starting up the ‘Nelson Rocks’ Facebook page. The idea behind the craze is that parents and children get together to collect and then paint rocks before going off on an adventure to the region’s local parks to hide them for others to find. Children are already spending hours outdoors, hunting for the painted rocks and then re-hiding them for the next people to come along. “We were up in Whanganui for Christmas and it has totally taken off up there, they’ve got something like 1000 members, but it’s going viral across the country, it's in Palmerston North, Hamilton, Christchurch and now Nelson,” says Emma. “It’s just something kids can creatively do and it gets them

outside for what is essentially a treasure hunt. It's great to see so many people getting creative, getting out, exploring nature and having fun. “My kids love the whole process and will talk about who they think might find the rocks and how happy it will make them, it’s really great.” Rocks are popping up everywhere, from Washbourn Gardens, Easby Park, Oxford St Playground, Winston Park, Isel Park, the Modellers Pond, to Queens Gardens and the Centre of New Zealand. The only rules are to keep off private property, seal the rocks so glitter and stickers don’t become litter and hide your rocks in a place where they won't get in the way of lawnmowers or gardeners. The page has only been up since December 29 but already has just under 700 members, most of whom post photos of their children painting, hiding, finding, and re-hiding rocks. “Word is definitely spreading, I really didn’t think it would take off as quickly as it did in Nelson, it is pretty amazing now that I think about it.”

Schools are back… School is back and that means there will be more children out and about, especially in the mornings and afternoon. The basic message around schools is: slow down and look out for kids. In many places around Nelson electronic variable school speed limit signs will be turned back on. Reducing your speed to 40km/h provides for a much increased reaction time for a driver, meaning you can identify potential hazards and react much more quickly.

Pedestrian crossings are places where pedestrians should be able to cross the road in safety. Drivers need to slow down as they approach them and be prepared to stop. Students and families need to remember to use the correct place to safely cross the road outside the school. So be extra careful around schools and watch out for kids!

20 km/h past a stationary school bus Remember – the speed limit for passing a stationary school bus when children are getting on and off is 20 km per hour. This speed limit applies no matter which direction you are travelling in.

Drivers – school bus incidents can happen

on both high and low speed roads. However, the faster your vehicle is travelling, the more likely it is that a child will be killed if they are hit.

Parents – when dropping off or collecting

your child from the school bus, try to do it so that you are on the same side as the bus. This will cut out the need for your child to cross the road. Park your car well away from the bus stop or other children so you don’t block drivers, children’s or the bus driver’s visibility. Get out of your car and meet your child or walk with them to the designated bus stop.

Students – wait at the nominated bus stop

The event, a homage to the region’s blackcurrent harvest, celebrated its 10th year on Sunday. Shareholder info to be circulated for Waimea Dam Waimea Irrigators Limited has been busy over the past few months, progressing activities relating to the Waimea Community Dam. This includes the preparation of a shareholder information document that will be circulated to irrigators over the next three weeks. The document was created to provide people with up-to-date information on the proposed dam project and to establish the level of support from water users, in order to proceed to the next stage. Waimea Irrigators Limited’s project manager, Natasha Berkett, says the document also features a detachable survey for water users on the Waimea Plains and adjacent areas (including Mt Heslington, Redwood Valley and Lower Wai-iti) to complete. “The survey asks water users how many shares they would be prepared to purchase, based on the costings provided in the information document,” says Natasha. “The document sets out what will happen if there is no dam and how security of water supply will be significantly enhanced, if the dam is constructed, for those water users with permits that are affiliated to the dam scheme.” Natasha also says that it’s important for people to understand the changes to the Tasman Resource Management Plan, which will come into effect in 2018/19. The changes mean that water rationing is almost certain for everyone if the dam does not proceed. “It is critical that firm support for at least 3000 hectares (shares) is received in response to this document for the dam project to proceed to the next step,” says Waimea Irrigators Limited chairman, Murray King. This support will be sought from both owners of lifestyle blocks as well as irrigators. “Waimea Irrigators Limited, and predecessors the Waimea Water Augmentation Committee (WWAC) and Waimea Community Dam Limited (WCDL), have worked hard over many years to develop a viable long-term solution to water shortages in the Nelson-Tasman region,” says Murray. “It would be a tragedy if we didn’t commit to securing the world’s most precious resource for future generations.” The shareholder information document will be circulated via a mixture of personal visits to larger water users, small group meetings and the post. Copies will also be available on Waimea Irrigators Limited’s website, which is currently being developed, or by contacting Natasha Berkett at natasha@ waterforlife.nz. Tourist caught up in crime: While holidaying in your area, cycling on your great town cycleways, I came across a young tagger doing his thing on an underpass wall. When I questioned him about his actions, I received a smack in the mouth for my efforts. The police turned up quickly. While going through the process of mopping up blood and filling in police reports, a member of the public latched on to what the fuss might be about and pointed out which way the offender was heading. Suddenly I am in the back of a police car witnessing a cat and mouse game through the suburbs, with members of the public giving pointers and the police radio going for it. All this escalates into my police woman driver diving into a section and re-appearing with the offender in handcuffs. So even though I leave Nelson with a fat lip full of stitches, I also leave with a sense that there is an underlying good community spirit, a police force that is doing their best and a police woman who is my hero. Lifeguards hit the beach with new gadgets Brittany Spencer

Nelson’s lifeguards are hitting the beach this summer, armed with new gear and some new gadgets following a $1million grant from the Infinity Foundation to Surf Life Saving New Zealand. After formally receiving the cheque on January 13, Surf Life Saving clubs around the country have received a new rescue board, two helmets, a VHF radio, first aid kit, sunblock, and patrol flags, along with a new tablet which lifeguards can use to enter patrol information directly from the beach. Nelson Surf Life Saving Club captain Aaron Lyttle says he can’t thank the foundation enough. “I hadn’t even heard of the Infinity Foundation until now so it was a fantastic surprise, and not just for us, but the whole of New Zealand Surf Life Saving. “As a small club, we’re overwhelmed by their generosity and very appreciative of the support.” The local club are looking forward to making the switch to technology with the new tablet, minimising paperwork and directly linking up to Surf Life Saving New Zealand. “It’s going to be a massive help with storing the patrol operations manual and logging all our patrol captains' reports and incident forms, it is a fantastic re-

On February 1, 1842 an old wooden ship given the name Fifeshire made its way into Tasman Bay after 137 days at sea, its landing 175 years ago was the birth of Nelson. Building material and some supplies had already been brought in by three colony ships in November the year before to help settlers get quickly established. The Fifeshire carried 159 immigrants, including many children. During the long journey

from England, fever broke out on the ship, killing 17 passengers. After dropping Nelson’s first settlers off, the Fifeshire was to leave Nelson for a trade mission in China. But it never made it out of the harbour, running onto Arrow Rock and getting stuck. The crew luckily made it out alive but the Fifeshire was wrecked, at least some parts could be used for some early settler houses. Not much of the ship remains today, but the rock in the harbour was nick-named Fifeshire Rock to remember the crashed

ship. Of course, those brave souls on the Fifeshire were hardly the first folk to live in the region. People of the Ngāti Toa tribe, which just migrated into the area in the 1820s under the leadership of the famous Te Rauparaha, lived here and in Golden Bay. But there is evidence of Maori settlements in the region from 700 years ago. The arrival of the Fifeshire, and following ships Lord Auckland, Mary Ann and Lloyds, came after the mapping of New Zealand by James Cook and the

Treaty of Waitangi established British government over the country in 1840, The New Zealand Company located Nelson as a good natural harbour and an ideal settlement location. When the first settlers entered Nelson they found streets, tents and building material already laid out for them by colony ships. Many of the early settlers came from Brit-

ain or from other European countries, hoping for a better life in the new colony. With over 3000 settlers arriving within the first two years, Nelson was initially one of the biggest cities in New Zealand. One of these settlers was Matthew Campbell, an English 27-year old foundry worker. Despite not having any formal education himself he was eager to educate the

newly-arrived children, for that reason he worked together with a group of people calling themselves the United Christians. Together they build a Sunday school which later, when it moved to today’s site of Queens Gardens, became a day school. Campbell became manager of this school and in 1843 co-founder of the Nelson School Society which build many schools

in Nelson and other towns in the local area. Campbell was so famous and connected with these schools that they were known as Campbell’s schools. He was active in local schools until his death in 1883 and often saved schools with his own money due to the Nelson School Society receiving little support in the early years.

Although many things were already prepared for the settlers, life wasn't exactly easy in the new country far away from their original homes. Much of the infrastructure was non-existent and basic services like schools or a fire watch had to be newly established. Though not entirely isolated thanks to the harbour, news and information took a long time to arrive in Nelson until Telegraph and, later, Telephone lines were built up. Looking for new valuable farmland, some settlers left Nelson for the Waimea Plains and Golden Bay. Towns like Richmond and Motueka sprung up soon after Nelson and established unique businesses on their own. Acknowledging Nelson's importance for New Zealand, Queen Victoria declared Nelson city a Bishops Seat in 1858. After that, the population of the city grew again and a search for new labour began, which was provided by chromium mines in the nearby mountains. The mining business soon fell into decline, but Nelson at that time already was an important trading and shipping city with connection to the whole world. By the late 19th century, all kinds of new businesses were growing in Nelson and the harbour supplied the whole north of the South Island with overseas goods. The mail service was not good at that time, with inland cities of the south island just accessible by small dirt roads and no

regular post service. But two brothers were out to change that. Born in 1850 and 1859, Henry and Thomas Newman established one of the biggest transport companies in New Zealand. Accepting their first contract in 1879, a mail delivery from Foxhill to Longford near Murchison, the company had a rough start. But in 1887 their first tri-weekly passenger and transport tours started from Nelson to Blenheim, after that the company just kept growing. Starting in 1911, the company also ran motorized vehicles and remained the one of the biggest transport companies until the 1960s. Henry died in 1919 and Thomas in 1944, but they left behind a great company which still exists today as a part of the InterCity group. The people of Nelson profited greatly from the transport innovations in the 20th century, making Nelson more accessible from the outside, and in that way enabling tourism to grow in the area and neighbouring regions like Golden Bay. The city of Nelson and the neighbouring towns were always well-known for the fruit and seafood industries, making it an important exporting city. In recent years, the wine industry and tourism make up the largest part of Nelson's economy. Since 1843 the arrival of the first settlers has been celebrated with an anniversary day and many special events. Over the years these have included the sailboat regattas held in Nelson, organised processions

Timeline of Nelson's History: 1842: Arrival of the first settlers on the Fifeshire, followed by a quick build-up of basic houses and infrastructure. The year saw the first school being built in Nelson and the first newspaper, Nelson Examiner, be printed by Charles Elliott. 1851: The first Anglican Church on Church Hill, which would later become the Cathedral of Nelson, is finished. The Church was expanded several times, but it was damaged by an earthquake and later a fire, in 1893 and 1920, making it unrepairable. 1853: First Nelson Provincial Council is formed for the newly-established Province of Nelson, which at this time included the whole north of the South Island. Edward Stafford, who later became Prime Minister, becomes first superintended of the Nel-

1870: First rugby game played in New Zealand is held in Nelson between Nelson College and the Nelson Football Club, at The Botanics. 1906: The Cut is completed which made accessing the harbour much easier. It was a grand engineering achievement for the small city, and the first boat, Rotoiti, which went through the Cut had over 800 cheering Nelson residents on board celebrating the event. 1914: First Nelson volunteers are sent to Europe in WW1, with

many of them having their first combat experience at the beaches of Gallipoli in Turkey which led to a disaster for the ANZAC Expeditionary Forces. Public opinion first mainly supported the war, until this disaster which led to major protests in Australia and New Zealand. 1929: The Murchison Earthquake hits Nelson and causes 17 deaths and substantial damage to buildings and infrastructure. Centred near Murchison, hence the name, this 7.8 earthquake was the most severe earthquake recorded in the Nelson area and left many people

Although the first plane visited Nelson as early as 1921, the opening of Nelson Airport close to the city centre lead to greater possibilities for both tourism and trade. During WW2, the RNZAF Station Nelson was a training station for many pilots in the air force and further developed the infrastructure of the airport.

Kay and Gavin Bradley took over the business on April 1, 2012, and are getting close to celebrating five successful years. Gavin has always been in the trucking industry and had previously worked at Nelson Truck Spares for 11 years, so when the former owners made the decision to retire, its seemed like “good sense” to take the business on themselves. “Although the business did do repairs, the main focus was on the truck

spares,” says Kay. “When we took ownership, we took a business mentor on and, after analysing the company, decided to change the name to Nelson Truck Repairs and Spares Ltd as many people didn’t realise that we did repair work. It’s had a really positive result.” The business has now seen a complete change of direction with repairs taking off, keeping their two mechanics more than occupied, while their vast array of second-hand and new parts are often relied on to keep fleets on the road. www.nelsontruckrepairs.co.nz When a vehicle comes into Nelson Truck Repairs and Spares for a Pre-CoF inspection and the team identifies something that will need to be replaced over the next couple of months, they will notify the company and keep a record to ensure the truck receives the replacement or repair at the necessary time. Their ability to provide an excellent standard of service relies heavily on their workshop team, Zac Berkett and Alan Rose. The pair are both fully qualified heavy automotive technicians, Zac completing his apprenticeship with Nelson Truck Repairs and Spares, while Alan has quite a number of years’ experience behind him. “We do the Pre-CoF’s, gear box

and differential rebuilds, a lot of brake work, chassis repairs, steering, suspension, the whole package really,” says Gavin. The arrival of their eight tonne hoist seven months ago has also benefited the workshops ability to achieve a quicker turnaround. When it comes to truck spares, Gavin has a vast knowledge, along with a huge range of second-hand and new parts at his fingertips, and if they don’t stock it, he’ll certainly know where to find it. Second-hand parts in good condition are always the first choice for the team, provided the customer is happy, helping them provide a cost-effective service. “It’s friendly, personal service that we offer,” says Kay. “We tend to

for a coffee, we really enjoy stuff like that. It helps us help them at the end of the day.” Those who have heard Nelson Truck Repairs and Spares radio advertising will also know that Molly, the leggy red-head, is also a permanent member of the team. “We’ve had Molly from a pup and she’s seven years old now and she’s been here since day one, in fact around Christmas time, she gets more treats from customers than any of us,” says Kay. “People come in for no other reason except to see her while some have come in thinking the leggy redhead is actually a leggy redhead, not a dog, which has been quite hilarious, but it’s worked a treat, I think having a dog here creates

I had no idea a job even existed in which you gave males brazilians, got growled at, farted on, scratched, occasionally bitten and are required to empty anal glands, until today. I walked into The Dog Spa Nelson thinking I’d have a couple of hours of getting sudsy and slightly shaken on by some cute puppies. But standing in front of the wash tub, what I got was a shivering wet dog that resembled a small/ short but very grumpy old man. I’d never realised how hilarious dogs look when they are wet until I met Roxy, a beautiful Jack Frost/Jack Russell-Bichon Frise cross that was misguidedly put in my care for the morning. Roxy embodied the term fluffball, but as soon as the water hit her fur she shrank to half her size and developed a grey old man’s beard. Montana Heslop is not a teenager who lets things get in the way of her dreams. The 17-year-old former Waimea College pupil moved to Wellington on Friday to attend the New Zealand Institute of Sport and improve her chances of realising her Olympic dream of playing sevens rugby for New Zealand. Montana is fresh off her second campaign in the Tasman women’s sevens team at the national championships in Rotorua – which is no mean feat considering she needed special dispensation both years because she is under the 18-year-old age restriction to play in the tournament. Montana has taken a big step towards the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. “There’s a group of us who got selected for the Go for Gold ini-

tiative. “From there it’s a two-month training block and from there 25 are contracted for the next 12 months." Fellow Nelsonians Jess Drummond and Risi Pouri-Lane were also talented-identified for the squad after also taking part in 2016. “I started playing rugby when I was five for Wanderers, mainly because my brother played it," says Montana. “I was never a girly-girl, I played netball but it wasn’t enough – I wanted more physicality." Montana also tried hockey, gymnastics, sprinting and cross country. She got back into rugby when she started at Waimea College in Year 9. So passionate is she about the sport, she offered to coach the Waimea girls’ team in Year 10. She moved to Motueka High School for term four of that year so she could compete at the Na-

She made the tournament team three years in a row at the Oamaru Rugby Festival 15s tournament and has been driving women’s

rugby at Waimea College school. The hard-working teenager admits to being worried about what will happen to her school team now she has left, but she is hopeful several Year 13 girls will keep

it going. Montana says watching Jess make the sevens team for the Dubai round of the world circuit last year gave her the inspiration to keep chasing her dream. “Between Jess and the three Tasman guys who made the men’s team this year for the Wellington Sevens, it’s proof that you can make it from this region.” She says her move to Wellington will make things easier in terms of opportunities and being noticed, Young players will form for camps on a regular basis and she says there is a close working relationship with the Manawatu, which means she will be exposed to a higher level of talent on a regular basis. Montana will be part of the NZIS rugby academy and she says she has one thing to work on above all else. “Fitness is the key,” she says. “You can always be fitter for sevens.”

Basalaj flies local flag at midget champs Jody Scott Michael Pickens picked up his seventh New Zealand Midget Car Championship, at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway over the weekend. The Aucklander is now level with Ted Tracey with the most individual wins in the grade. He is also the current Australian champion and he proved why he was the car to catch, all weekend. Michael ended the qualifying heats top on points, though he did have a lucky escape when running into an upside down Neville Basalaj in the final heat on Friday night. Michael won the six car six-lap dash to secure pole for the 30 lap final, but it was never his until the final couple of laps. The veteran led the final race comfortably until the first yellow light came on in lap 10 for a broken car. A fumbled restart saw him slip to third down the back straight, he recovered quickly to leap back into second. He spent the next eight laps chasing the lead car of Hayden Williams before Hayden made a wee mistake and Michael grabbed his

The restart saw the multiple-time champion apply the blowtorch and the pressure finally paid off

and he grabbed the lead back with both front wheels lifting off the ground as he passed the pit gate. Hayden overdid it again to allow Brad Mosen through to second while American Spencer Bayson did the slide move to slip under Williams in the final corner to

claim third place. The track surface was perfect for night one with some added bite for Saturday’s second night which created some extra carnage. Nelson icon Neville Basalaj was leading in the final heat of Friday night when he clipped a car along the back straight, and as he

headed out of the final corner the tyre went flat, putting him up the wall and over several times before landing back on the track only forty metres from the chequered flag. Neville worked all night to fix the car and managed to qualify for the final race, but was down at the rear of the field. It was a Kiwi front row to start the finals but the four visiting Americans were only a whisker behind the pace, it was one of the best fields to compete in the 75 years of the championship. The Nelson Tigers have had to call on a couple of outside drivers to fill the team this year to do battle at the Palmerston North Teams Championships. Adam Groome, Scott McEwan and Dion Mooney will team up with locals Trevor Lineham, Ken Nolan and Jared Gray to fly the flag this weekend. The Tasman Thunder have named Michael Paynter, Keightley Teece, Brad Neiman, Adam Hall, Tim Ross and John Everett to contest the New Zealand Stock Car Teams Nationals in Gisborne next month. The team was second last year and hope to go one better this time.

singles and women’s triples centre titles both both making their way to the trophy cabinet. Rhonda Bellis skipped Marie Watson and Barbara Thompson to a 19-15 triumph in the triples decider over the United team skipped by Barbara McGregor. Rhonda’s team went through

qualifying and post-section play undefeated and rightly triumphed at the United Green. The annual representative fixture between Nelson and Marlborough will be played this weekend, with the women playing at Stoke and the men heading to Blenheim.
