‘Gutless’ attack on taxi driver

A vicious assault has left a taxi driver with a broken jaw and unable to work, but he says he feels bad for the young men who did it, even though they haven’t been found. John Mitchell has been left with screws holding his jaw together after the cowardly attack by two strangers last week. John was driving a Nelson City Taxi van along Nayland Rd, Stoke, in the early hours of Sunday January 13, when he noticed two people waving out on the Whakatu Drive over-bridge. There was a taxi in front of him which slowed down and pulled to the side, so he kept driving. Checking his rear-view mirror, he saw the other taxi drive off so thought “oh well, I’ll go and get them then”. He did a U-turn, pulled over, and the two young men said they wanted a ride. “I got out of the cab and went to open the sliding door because it’s a jammy little thing, and before I even got to the door, they were calling me things like ‘you’re a fat bastard’, so I got back in the car.”

Nelson’s SPCA has gone to the rabbits. As of last week, they had a total of 24 homeless rabbits and are look-
ing for animal lovers to consider adding one to their family. That number includes the maximum 16 that can fit in their small animal barn, plus another eight at staff member Trudi Black’s house. She’s taken in a mummy rabbit and her seven babies, which are
just weeks old, until there is room for them at the centre. Manager Donna Walzl says they also had to turn away another seven baby rabbits on Friday morning which are the result of a “rogue” male rabbit making its way into a female’s cage.
“This is not normal. We’re at full capacity. We’ve also been asked by the Canterbury SPCA to take some of their rabbits - so it’s not just us.” Trudi suspects one of the reasons for the boom in the rabbit population is because rabbit own-
ers are not desexing their fluffy friends. “A lot of them come to us as strays, too. Whether they escape, or people are releasing them, we don’t know.”

Trudi says that many people don’t realise that rabbits, like any pet, require a lot of work and attention. “Their space needs cleaning daily, they require a specific diet of around eighty percent hay and grass with few to no pellets, and a hutch is not enough - they need space to run and play.” Many of the rabbits are bonded over a threeweek period and adopted out as male/female pairs. “Rabbits should always be in pairs, they are a social animal and love to be around people, too. They are intelligent animals and need enrichment

and mental stimulation.” SPCA Nelson’s small animal barn opened last March, and Trudi says they wouldn’t be able to cope with this many rabbits without it. “It’s been absolutely brilliant.” And it’s not just rabbits that need homes, they have a steady influx of puppies and kittens, too. Trudi says if you are dealing with rabbits that need rehoming, using platforms such as Trade Me and Facebook pages is a good start. All rabbits at the Nelson SPCA come desexed and are $50 to adopt. They will allow 2-3-week trial period to make sure it is the right pet for you.

‘Gutless’ attack on taxi driver FROM PAGE 1 One of the young men then poked his head through the window and wouldn’t remove it, so John got back out. “I said to them ‘look mate, if you don’t want a ride please get out because I’ve got another job to go to’.” One of the young men, who John can only describe as having “beachy blonde hair”, then king hit John in the face, snapping his jaw in two before running off towards Stoke. “I don’t sort of remember what happened after that. I didn’t hit the emergency button in the car for some reason, and for some reason I’ve done a U-turn and driven towards Songer St. “I remember seeing a police car coming towards me and I knew I was in trouble, so I waved him down and pretty much collapsed at the back of the van and told them what’d happened.” John had X-rays taken at Nelson Hospital which showed two severe breaks to his jaw. “Nobody sort of knew how bad it was until the x-ray, then everyone sort of went white.” John was sent to Wellington the next day on a life flight and

John says that night he had bone protruding through his gum, poking him in the tongue. Surgery was successful but he still doesn’t know how many screws are holding his jaw together. “I’m trying to stay positive about going back to work, I tell Andy that I am ... but I just don’t know.” Andy Wooley is the owner of the taxi that John was driving and describes the offenders as “gutless pricks”. After the whole ordeal, John says he feels bad for the offenders. “I reckon he was only 19 or 20, he’d only be a young fella, and you know one night he’s gotten drunk and done this. Nelson City Taxis chairman
Graeme Page says its “devastating” because the company has very good safety precautions in place. “But they are based around incar activity. This is an instance where a driver has got out to either assist or help someone which can happen anytime.” Now the company has to think about how it can protect their drivers outside the vehicles as well. He says some drivers have already purchased cameras that film outside the vehicle as well. A police spokesperson says enquiries into the assault are still ongoing. John says he’s in two minds whether he wants them to be caught or not. “On one hand I think well, I don’t want it to happen again, and then on the other hand I think something like this could ruin this young man’s life, it was hopefully a stupid mistake. The offenders are described as being in their late teens, early twenties. One was wearing a brown jacket and one a short sleeve top with a watch on his right hand. ‘Prison only possible outcome’ Locally Owned and Operated
Drink driver given a serve by judge after he was caught twice in a month Sara Hollyman A Nelson man is looking at prison time after pleading guilty to his fifth and sixth drink-driving convictions. Alister Stay Tamaki, 30, appeared in the Nelson District Court on Monday charged with two counts of driving with excess breath alcohol, two counts of driving while disqualified, failing to stop or ascertain injury and a charge of driving in a dangerous manner. Tamaki was stopped at a checkpoint on December 21 just before midnight where he blew a reading of 808mcg per litre of breath. The legal limit is 250mcg. He says he had drunk three beers
in the last hour before leaving work. On Friday January 25, Tamaki he was driving along Hampden St at speed when he failed to give-way at the intersection of Waimea Rd and drove straight into the path of an oncoming car. The driver of the car swerved but was unable to avoid collision and crashed into Tamaki’s bumper on the driver’s side, causing minor panel damage to her car. Tamaki did not stop to check on the welfare of the victim and drove off at speed. He was found by police a short time later on Riverside, after members of the public called about his manner of driving.
As a police officer approached him, Tamaki screamed and raised his fists at the officer. When he was tested for alcohol, he blew a reading of 1149mcg per litre of breath. Judge Tony Zohrab remanded Tamaki in custody saying: “Regrettably, prison is the only possible outcome given your history.” He will reappear in court on March 20. A man who drove away from a police checkpoint because his friend needed to use the bathroom has been disqualified from driving. Aaron Armitage was driving along Rutherford St on Decem-
ber 22 when he came upon a checkpoint and was asked to pull over and stop on Examiner St. He did not stop and instead drove off, but was found a short time later by police on Mount St. He told police he drove away as his friend needed to use the bathroom. Lawyer David Holloway said that story more than likely checked out as that same friend later threw up on the booze bus. Armitage blew 517mcg per litre of breath with Judge Tony Zohrab saying, while it was a relatively low reading, he had “real concerns” when looking at his demerit point history. “It’s true this is your first conviction, but I have some real concern
when I look at your demerit point history. Judge Zohrab says Armitage has three demerit point drink drives - registering over 250mcg but under 400mcg - which he had never seen before. “This is the first time I’ve seen three, that indicates that you’ve been chancing your arm for some time now.” Armitage was convicted of driving with breath alcohol over 400mcg and failing to stop, in the Nelson District Court on Monday. He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined a total of $750 and ordered to pay court costs of $260.
Heatwave hits Nelson Jonty Dine
Nelson has been hit by scorching weather this week with the temperature hitting the mid-30s. Warm temperatures were expected over summer, but the length of the extremely warm period was unusual, Metservice’s Amy Rossiter says. “Some parts of the South Island might only get six days over 30C in a year, and this week they could get five or six days in a
row.” Niwa said already in the Nelson region the record for the warmest minimum temperature had been broken, with 24.3C recorded in Richmond. This was the warmest minimum temperature for the region since records began 157 years ago. The previous record was 23.7C. The warm air mass was forecast to stick around until tomorrow before a front moved up the country Friday bringing cooler temperatures.
It also means that a total fire ban has been enforced around the region. The ban came into effect at midday on Sunday and is expected to remain in place until the heatwave subsides. Crews were called to extinguish multiple fires on Tahunanui Beach last week. A person attempted to smoke out some rabbits at the beach by lighting a fire at each end of a burrow.

NEWS Greenmeadows opening: After months of issues, Stoke’s embattled Greenmeadows Centre is finally nearing completion. The controversial centre saw serious construction issues delay its completion after an audit commissioned by Nelson City Council also found various structural faults. However, despite its tumultuous journey, the centre has started to host sports events and is scheduled to be complete in the coming weeks. Bouncy castle starts fire: A bouncy castle is to blame for the fire at Action Indoor Sports Stadium on Sunday.Richmond Senior Station Officer Craig Clayworth was one of the first firefighters on the scene and says the building was full of “a large amount of thick black smoke” on arrival due to the materials that were burning inside. He says the layout of the building meant that firefighters couldn’t access the fire so they had to cut a hole in a roller door of the building. Craig says the fire looks a lot worse than it is, as the actual fire itself was relatively small. Health service to resume at Tahunanui centre: Health services look set to start back up again at the Tahunanui Community Centre with Nelson Bays Public Health stepping up to help. Emma Agnew, who previously offered a clinic at the centre each Wednesday will resume her job next Wednesday. The centre has been in limbo for the past several weeks after being found to be in severe financial difficulty. A working group has been co-opted onto the board to help sort out the problems and to get all essential services back up and running.

What used to be attractive, flower-filled planters on the Rocks Rd walkway are now an “eyesore”, according to a nearby resident - but Nelson City Council says it’s not an easy area to maintain. Paul Lunberg says he walks past the six large concrete planters at Magazine Point a few times a week. “They used to be covered in yellow flowers, now they are full of rocks, gravel and waste. They have gone from something fairly attractive to big gaps of ugliness. It really is an eyesore.” Nelson Weekly took a stroll past the planters last week and saw cigarette butts, cans, plastic rubbish, McDonald’s cups, broken glass, old screws, bottle caps, weeds, debris and lots of ripped-up weed matting in them. Lots of people walk down there, including tourists, all day every day, and all they see is these ragged and horrible planters.” However, council says although they do have plans to beautify them, it’s not a quick and easy task due to their proximity to the sea.
Rosie Bartlett, acting group manager community services, says the planters were “completely devastated” by last February’s storm and restoration is a “work in progress”. “It is very challenging to maintain healthy plants in them as every time the sea water comes up over the footpath and into the planting areas, it damages and/or kills the plants.”
She says they are considering replanting the areas in the Autumn with plants that may be better suited to the challenges of the location, such as pohutukawa and kowhai. She says Nelmac regularly maintains the planters and will be removing the white weed matting which has been exposed since the storm last year and broken down as a result.

Hospice gets funding boost Festival to feature The Nelson Tasman Hospice is set to benefit from a cash injection thanks to the generosity of Christmas shoppers. More than $763,000 has been donated to hospice services around the country following the Christmas fundraising campaign supported by all Farmers Departments stores. This is the fifth year that Farmers has supported Hospice, donating nearly $3.5 million to help keep services free of charge. Once again Farmers customers and staff were fully behind the campaign – purchasing the limited edition bauble and making donations to the Tree of Remembrance. All funds donated in each store remain in the local community, helping to ensure that hospice care remains free of charge for people with lifelimiting conditions, their families and whānau. For the people of Nelson Tasman, the donation of $28,823 will enable the hospice to provide the level of free care to patients and their families. Dozens of daredevils will descend on Nelson this weekend for the annual Shiny Side Up Bike Festival. The event is dedicated to all things motorcycle with the aim of bringing the New Zealand biker community together. Though the theme of the day will be safety, there will be a number of dangerous stunts on display. Among the talent on show will be two-time Guinness World Record holder Jake Whitaker. At last year’s event, Jake wowed the crowd when he jumped over his wife on a motorbike. Held at Saxton Fields, Shiny Side Up
will feature a number of ‘tech talks’ offering riding tips. There will also be a Shine and Show comp as well as plenty of racing, stalls and food karts. The event utilises well known personalities to empower the riders with their knowledge and experiences. Organiser Dave Keilty says the event, which has been running for three years, showcases everything great about motorcycling. “We make it a fun, family day, we just really want to get people to understand there is much more to motorcycling than just taking your bike out of the shed for a ride.” The event is on Sunday from 10am to 4pm and is free entry.

Beacons save lives, says chopper crew Sara Hollyman The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter crew have a message personal locator beacons (PLBs) work. The trust which runs the service flew 430 missions in 2018, with rescues ranging from severe workplace accidents, heart attacks and car accidents, to locating people lost in the bush. For example, Elad Yarmut was hiking in the Richmond Hills with two friends in late December when a tent in the riverbed caught his eye. He shouted out “are you ok?” Kylor Hall popped out and said: “Actually no, do you have a PLB?” Kylor had been hiking when he slipped and dislocated his ankle. With no means of communication and being immobile, he was forced to wait in the river bed hoping help would arrive. Luckily, four hours later, Elad and his friends stumbled upon him and activated their own
locator beacon. When a locator beacon is activated, as well as raising the alarm for emergency services, it also raises an alarm for the family of the person to whom it belongs. Helicopter crewman Carl Babe says that call was a perfect example of why carrying a PLB could be the difference between life and death. “A situation where no one else is around, the weather deteriorates, you run out of food ... a PLB is the difference. Carl says at least half of flights they do are medical transfers or urgent medical work, which is the stuff that nobody hears about. “There’s a lot of feel good stories out there where we get people safely out of the bush and get them home, it’s not all gorey.” The helicopter trust sells PLBs as a fundraiser and Carl says for an extra 200 grams of weight in your bag or $500 to save your life it should be an easy choice to make.

Sara hits the buskers bulls-eye Locally Owned and Operated
The Nelson Buskers Festival performers take to the stage and street tomorrow to excite, wow and make us laugh. This year’s acts are coming from Canada, Argentina, Germany and Japan as well as New Zealand, and it got us wondering what type of life this was. Here, the Nelson Weekly catches up with Sara Twister from Germany, who as a child baffled her peers and family with random acts of hypermobility, dislocations and fitting in tiny enclosures.
How would you describe your act - an acrobatic contortionist? My act is mostly a blend between archery, contortion, and me! For my main stunt I fire a bow with my feet whilst in a complex acrobatic position; balancing on my arms. For the rest of it I’m pushing the limits of my own body, and the limits of what people dare to watch. To many this is an unusual occupation: how did you get into it? I’ve been into archery ever since I was about 8-years-old, but the twist came later. I have naturally double-jointed shoulders and used to enjoy baffling my friends with this abnormality all throughout my childhood. When I discovered there was actually a thing called "contortion" and this could become my career, I was hooked.

Usually, when I am performing I can't do as much, but I will need to do at least an hour of yoga when I wake up and before shows, and an hour of Pilates every two days after shows, just to maintain the muscles. What’s the best aspect of the job? And the worst? Best aspect? Travel! Worst? Travel! Ha! No seriously, I love
the most getting to see different places and cultures, but it is also the thing that can be very tiring. At the moment I don't actually even live anywhere. I have all my belongings in two cases, and basically live in hotels and Airbnbs. I see my family and close friends only once or twice a year and I miss them a lot! But I DO get to meet a lot of my performing friends around the world and see beautiful places and that’s amazing.
Do you have a favourite country or type of audience you really love performing in front of? I'll be honest... I actually really love New Zealand and Australia! When I started developing this particular show, I was a lot in both those countries, so I guess in a way it was tailored to the audiences here. If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing? I’d be a costume maker. I love
making costumes. Art you can wear! How great is that? I make all my own actually. I’d love to get more into it, but unfortunately don't have much time for it at the moment. When I can't do this anymore though, that is what I’ll be doing. You can see Sara Twister at the Buskers Festival which starts tomorrow and runs until Sunday. 300-year-old instruments on show Kate Russell They are more than 300-yearsold, but they are still capable of producing some of the most beautiful music in the world. The New Zealand String Quartet will be making musical magic with a 17th century viola, a 1705 cello along with two 18th century violins at the Adam Chamber Music Festival, which starts this week in Nelson. “It’s amazing to think that these instruments are older than any building in New Zealand,” says the quartet’s first violinist and the festival’s co-artistic director, Helene Pohl. “Instruments that have lived that long have had so many repairs and beautiful bow strokes, which gives them a special sound all of their own. “We are very lucky to have instruments of this age and calibre.” The biennial festival attracts music lovers from all over the world and Helene says the biggest highlight of this year’s festival is being back in the refurbished Nelson Centre of Musical Arts. Across the 10 days there will be 29 events featuring 28 musicians, and there are seven free events. Artists include the internationally-renowned Jerusalem Quartet,

alongside two concerts at Nelson Cathedral. Helene says the festival creates a fully immersive experience, both for its performers and its audience. Many of the artists stay for the
full ten days, creating an environment of collaboration with other festival artists. She says putting the festival together is “like making a great meal”. “You have all these good ingredi-

Nelson Matters Nelson has got 2019 off to a ripper start. The Bay Dreams Festival had Nelson pumping. The Black Caps win at Saxton Field over the Sri Lankans was impressive. Nelson again won the annual sunshine crown for 2018. The summer events just keep coming with UB40 and the Nelson Buskers Festival this next week, the Aorere Enduro International mountain bike event and Nelson Food and Wine Festival in February and Bryan Adams and the Craft Beer Festival in March. We are a happening region rather than the sleepy hollow of yesteryear. These events reinforce the value of our community in invest-
ing facilities and infrastructure. I have been very supportive of our councils developing facilities like Trafalgar Park, Saxton Field, the Great Taste Cycleway and Nelson Airport, including securing millions in Government funding. The downside of this scorching weather is the developing drought. The Tasman Council this week ramps up its water restrictions from Stage 1 to Stage 2. The problem for orchardists and farmers is that the soil moisture monitoring by NIWA on the Waimea Plains is already showing drought conditions. There is already signs of dangerous algae growing in the Waimea River
caused by low flows and warm water. My greatest achievement last year was getting the legislation through Parliament for the Waimea Community Dam. Construction begins next month. We need nature to treat us kindly with enough rain now and for the next two summers until it is completed in 2021. I began my political work year with my annual speech to Rotary. I floated five ideas as National’s Electoral Law Spokesperson on how we can strengthen our democracy. Liberal democratic values are being tested throughout the world with the dangerous rise of extremism and increased foreign interference in elections.

I proposed entrenching New Zealand’s full Electoral Act so it requires a 75% majority or referendum to make changes. It is an abuse of power for parties in Government to amend electoral law so as to help them win the next election. The second change I want is to ban foreign donations. New Zealand’s democracy is ours and should not be open to manipulation by any offshore interference. A third change worth considering is a referendum on a four year term. The problem with our current short term of three years is that the first year is spent getting a handle on the job, the second doing it and the

I also propose tasking the Electoral Commission with running Council as well as Parliamentary elections so as to improve the participation rate and integrity of local elections. Baden Biggs was just 14-years-old when his father purchased the first tractor for their working farm to replace the horse-drawn ploughs. Now, 68 years later, Baden has the exact David Brown Cropmaster in his possession - fully restored and in near perfect condition. Baden has 10 vintage machines in his shed, with his David Brown taking prime position among the nine Allis-Chalmers models, each one lovingly restored to working order. His full collection will be on display at the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Show at Higgins Heritage Park this weekend, which is celebrating 80 years of David Brown’. Baden says his collection of vintage machinery began with a single plough. “I got this plough that had a broken wheel, so I advertised on the Saturday morning buy, sell and exchange on the radio and by lunchtime I had three more ploughs and still no wheel, and that was the start of it really.” As his collection began to grow, he started thinking

Photo: Sara Hollyman. about his Dad’s first tractor and decided to try to find it. “I knew the serial number, and I knew he had traded it in on a newer David Brown, but that’s it. We found the next owner of it but then the trail went cold.” After years of searching, Baden had all but given up when, by word of mouth, he finally managed to track it to a paddock in Hope. “It was in a sorry state, the engine was seized and full of water, the bonnet looked like it had been used as a
trampoline and was basically inside out, it was just a mess,” he says. Little by little, with a lot of love, and a fair chunk of cash, Baden put the Cropmaster back together, and this week he will drive it to Pigeon Valley to proudly display it as one of the 30 David Browns in the show. Baden became a member of the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club about 30 years ago and has been busy organising this year’s event which promises to be
something special. He says the rarest item on display will be a 1918 Ruggles and Parsons tractor, of which there are only three working models in the entire world, all of which belong to the top half of the South Island of New Zealand. Entry to this weekend’s event is just $5 with children under 14 free of charge. Live demonstrations of hay making, general machinery duties and trailer rides for the kids are sure to keep the whole family entertained.

New show imagines Nelson’s Hollywood ‘glamour’ era It’s a little-known fact that Nelson in the 1940s was the setting of a very famous Hollywood movie. Or was it? That’s the premise of The People’s Republic of Improv’s latest show “Nelsablanca” which takes inspiration from the Hollywood classic “Casablanca”. Over the month of February, the troupe will create an entirely improvised movie, with the plot carrying on every Friday night. “Think ladies in fur, lounge singers, drama, mad scientists, guys in fedoras and trench coats,” says Ghost Light Theatre manager Debbie Brooks. “Not to mention international intrigue and classic Hollywood kissing that just involves people rubbing their faces on each other.” The show is hot on the heels of the previous serialised performance “Wynasty” which imagined the scandalous, entirely-improvised history of early Nelson wine tycoons, in the style of the soap opera “Dynasty”. Debbie says the concept was a smash hit, with people turning up every show to find out what happened next in the plot. By the season finale it was a sell-out, with theatre staff having to turn people away. “There were some amazing characters, crazy ploy twists and a lot of fun.” Debbie says that is sure to continue with “Nelsablanca”, as the audience will no doubt pick up on the tropes of the theme. “The People's Republic of Improv is back to bring their hilarious take of old classic Hollywood and mash it with... Nelson. “Did I mention they're going to make the whole thing up?” Debbie thinks it’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Nelsablanca runs every Friday night in February at Ghost Light Theatre and a season pass is only $30.

Vaea sets sights on NRL Jonty Dine
The Brisbane Broncos have always been Vaea Tutu’ila’s favourite rugby league team So it was a dream come true a few weeks ago when the former Nelson College star got the call that the Broncos wanted him. He was named in the Brisbane Broncos Elite Player Development Squad as he chases his goal of playing in the NRL.
Vaea had a stellar season for the college side, his blockbusting runs proving a nightmare for midfield defences. Playing wing or centre, Vaea’s imposing presence caught the eyes of NRL scouts. He says he opted to sign for the Queensland club as he felt it would be best for his family and his rugby career. “I’m pretty happy about the opportunity with the Broncos,
hopefully I will play for the firstgrade team one day. This is my dream to make it come true and the only way to make my dreams come true is to believe in God and yourself.” Vaea says the discipline instilled in him at Nelson College has set him in good stead as he prepares to enter the world of professional footy and try crack one of the world’s most competitive
leagues. Training everyday with the first XV gave Vaea a strong sense of structure. “I just wanted to learn and listen to the coach.” He says he was taught to show this discipline on and off the footy field. While he has always
wanted to be a Bronco, Vaea is yet to pledge his allegiance to one of his two countries. “I want to become a professional player but I’m not sure yet if I will play for Tonga or the Kiwis, I just want to do my best for the Broncos.”

Rose Frank successfully continued the Tyree Photographic Studios storing a huge collection of negatives in a humidity-controlled strong room behind the Hallenstein Building, in what is now Montgomery Square. She retired
in 1946, aged 82 when she sold the business but retained control of the collection. Upon her death in 1954, Rose Frank bequeathed the entire 300,000 negatives of the Tyree Collection to the Historical Society, now administered by the Provincial Museum.

Ian Burson has had a successful past few weeks. The slimmed down Super Saloon driver picked third place at the recent New Zealand Championship in Huntly, his fourth time on the podium over the past seven years. The logging contractor has not had many meetings at his home track due to the lack of numbers locally, but has had plenty of good results away as he defends his Mag and Turbo Supercup title. Over the weekend Ian was able to come away with a couple of good results. On Saturday it was home to Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway and then over the hill with another round in Blenheim on the Sunday. The Nelson round was successful in gaining points, he had a win and a third place in the heats and finished 3rd in the
pole shuffle. Off grid 3 he was able to pass to get into second and challenged for the lead on a couple of restarts, but had to settle for second in the feature. Keightley Teece had won his third straight South Island Stock Car Title in Christchurch the week earlier and is heading to Bay Park in Tauranga to contest the New Zealand title in three weeks.

Alex finds freedom without prosthetic Jonty Dine Reporter

After badly bruising his stump just six days out from a national New Zealand tournament, onearmed tennis player Alex Hunt was facing the prospect of sitting on the sidelines. The injury, the result of a recent fall, made it too painful for the Nelson-born athlete to wear his usual prosthetic arm. “I thought I might have to pull out.” However, the incident has proven to be a blessing in disguise. Alex’s condition was caused at birth after his umbilical cord wrapped around his arm, stunting its growth. Since he was two he has worn a prosthetic, and used it to play tennis as he rose through the ranks. But a day after his accident, Alex was invited to join in a game. “I didn’t have my arm to serve but they suggested I just sort of pop it up from my stump,” he says. Alex, who lives in Nelson but travels the world for tennis, says it went so well that he decided to train this way for the next five days. He then debuted his new technique at the tournament. “It was very nerve-wracking walking up to serve for the first time with my arm off.” While the results didn’t go his

Photo: Jonty Dine. way, the 25-year-old gained a new sense of freedom on the court. “I didn’t do too well, I actually served ok, but the rest of my game was just not there, but I wasn’t expecting too much.” Having gained the confidence of performing on a national stage, Alex has now adopted the new serving style and will continue to play without his prosthetic arm. “It feels much freer, it means I can fully extend and really open up

on the backhand, there isn’t the feeling of something hanging off you that’s not part of you.” With no coaching manual for Alex’s unique serve, there is a lot of trial and error going into perfecting it. “I put a wristband on with a little hole just to help grip the ball a little better, then I just pop it off the forearm.” He says he can’t believe he didn’t try it earlier.
“It just didn’t cross my mind that it would be better without it.” While playing without a prosthetic is better for his game, it does attract attention. “It makes it more noticeable, which can be hard because I don’t like to stand out, but at the same time, if it can get my story out there and inspire some kids in a similar situation, that’s fine with me.” Alex says a number of parents of
children with birth defects have reached out to him for advice. “I am getting so many cool messages from families who tell me it has opened their eyes and they realized their kids can still live great lives.” Alex is back in Nelson for a training block as he works on his new technique with coach John Gardiner and local Paralympic specialist Claire Dallison. He says his handicap has never held him back and he always had fun with it. “I would sit in class and try and make my arm fart.” Alex was schooled at Wakefield Primary, Waimea Intermediate and Nelson College. Growing up on a farm in Wakefield, Alex says the lifestyle taught him early on that he could do anything. “I always tried to keep up with my brothers whether it was riding motorbikes or playing sport, I was always charging behind.” When picking his brothers up from training, Alex would jump on court, so it was a natural progression for him. While also a star footballer, basketballer and rugby player, Alex chose the tennis path at 14. “I had to make a decision and so I chose tennis because I couldn’t imagine my life without it.” On Sunday, the Richmond Tennis Club, where he was a junior member hosted an afternoon for its young players to meet Alex.

Marlborough flexes its cricketing muscles Peter Grigg The Dolphins and the Falcons both had comfortable but contrasting victories in round nine of the TPL cricket competition on Saturday. In the other low scoring match, Wakatu continued its recent resurgence. The Falcons made short work of an understrength WTTU at Jubilee Park in a match that only lasted 39 overs and was completed before the lunch break. Opening bowler Nick Weaver was dangerous at the top of the innings to begin the rout and Cameron Horton and Andrew McCaa picked up the treats through the middle and bottom of the order. Skipper Matthew Stretch is making every post a winner this season and he seemed in a hurry to get home to Blenheim. He bludgeoned 42 runs in boundaries to finish one short of a half century. He did not appear to be too fazed by this however as the Falcons picked up valuable competition points. While the stand out individual performance of the day came from Nelson College, it was not enough as they succumbed in
their moderate run chase against Wakatu. An inspired spell of quick bowling from the tall Jarrod McKay wreaked havoc amongst the Wakatu batting at Victory Square. With a second wicket partnership between Mason Robinson and Daniel Hooper ticking over fifty easily, things seemed serene. Enter McKay – then everything changed. He ripped out the middle of the innings, was rested and Wakatu countered with a solid ninth wicket stand, then came back and finished things off. McKay bowled five maidens, taking seven wickets for ten runs in the best return for the season. His efforts, however, were in vain as Nelson College’s batting woes continued against a solid and varied Wakatu bowling attack. The Wakatu bowlers all chipped in and while it was a bit touch and go in the end they won relatively easily as the tail fell away quickly. A brutal and relentless assault by the visiting Dolphins allowed them to reach a mammoth total that a brave Stoke Nayland found beyond them at Mardsen Rec. After the loss of a couple relatively early, Josh Poole and Prabodha Arthavidu added 123 for
the third wicket. Once Arthavidu was dismissed, Jerry Lamb offered no respite as he too added a half century at better than a run a ball. At the other end, Poole scored all around the wicket and his outstanding innings of 115 came off
