Nelson braces for Bay Dreams With three days, 20,000 music lovers, two venues, two campgrounds, hours of planning and plenty of world-class acts, Bay Dreams is one of the most complex events to ever hit Nelson. Reporter Kate Russell looks at how Nelson is bracing itself for the sold-out event this Friday.
Music will be pumping, campgrounds will be bursting at the seams, security will be on high alert and the sun will hopefully be shining at what has been dubbed Nelson’s biggest concert since Tina Turner hit Trafalgar Park in back in 1997. Bay Dreams is one of the most popular festivals of the Kiwi summer music calendar, with the Mount Maunganui event selling out year after year.
This is the first time it’s been held in the South Island, with promoters bringing some of the biggest names in music to Nelson, from US hip-hop sensation Cardi B and Australian one-woman-band Tash Sultana, to Kiwi legends Katchafire and UK extraordinaire Macky Gee. As well as the main event on Friday, warm-up and after parties are lined up for Thursday and Saturday. So, is Nelson prepared for this? “Yes, we are,” says Nelson city councillor, Tim Skinner, who is also chair of the sports and recreation committee. “It’s going to be a nervous time, a bit of a test for Nelson, but our staff have been working really hard on this.” The even hits the region at “peak tourist season” and with 17,500 out of the 20,000 tickets sold
outside of Nelson, council has worked closely with promoters Neptune Entertainment to manage the influx of visitors. Tim says they have approved camping for up to 1,400 ticket holders at Rutherford Park and more recently, up to 3,200 at Saxton Field from 3 - 5 January. The extra camping at Saxton was added due to an “overwhelming” demand for more sites and is also expected to help ease demand on accommodation for regular summer tourists. Public transport will also be in hot demand, and buses will run to and from Trafalgar Park and the Trafalgar Centre, servicing the festival campgrounds, as well as the Brook and Maitai Valley Holiday Parks, Tahunanui, Stoke and Richmond and will follow the regular bus routes. The proposed full-day closure of
the Wakatu carpark was scrapped by council due to concerned retailers and will now be closed from 5.30pm Friday until 1am Saturday. United Video customers also have access until 9pm Friday. Paru Paru Rd will also be closed off to the public from 5.30pm Friday until 1am Saturday. Promoters will be providing security in nearby local streets, as well as in the venues and camp sites, and are also working with local police. Inspector Paul Borrell, Area Commander from Nelson Bays Police says they will have a visible presence inside and outside the event to ensure that people are able to celebrate and get home safely. “The Bay Dreams organisers have a responsibility to provide primary and effective security at the

event that will be supported by our own police staff.” He encourages attendees to have a good time and “remember the occasion for the right reasons”. “We advise everyone to make sure you look after yourselves and each other.” Tim says it has been his vision this year to get plenty of topnotch events to Nelson, and 2019 will see a raft of international acts in Nelson, including UB40, Bryan Adams, John Butler Trio, plus Angus and Julia Stone. “My main concern is that the public haven’t grasped the size of Bay Dreams, but this is what Nelson has been asking for and we hope they embrace it.” Bay Dreams is on at Trafalgar Park this Friday, 4 January. The event starts at 11am with the final acts finishing around 10.45pm.

Don’t get burnt by false sunblock claims Sara Hollyman Kiwi customers are getting burnt by sunblock companies. Consumer NZ’s latest test of sunscreens found products not meeting label claims. Currently the only regulations in place for the use of sunbeds is that those under 18-yearsold can’t use them. The World Health Organisations states that risk of melanoma is increased by 75 per cent if a tanning device is used under the age of 30. Because of this, Nelson Cancer Society manager Michelle Hunt says that the Government should step in to help with funding for sunscreen. “Your chances of developing skin cancer later in life is increased if you get sunburnt in childhood, hence why now the strong education and practice of sunsmart programmes in our schools.” She says that out of the 39 primary schools in the Nelson Tasman area, currently just 15 of them hold the Cancer Society’s SunSmart accreditation. “We are applying for funds for sunscreen for the low decile schools in our region as unfortunately sunscreen is cost prohibitive for some of these schools, we have 12 schools in

our region that are 5 or below. Michelle says that there is currently no available funding for sunscreen in schools or for the Cancer Society. “Sunscreen isn’t cheap, it would be great if it could be very affordable for everyone.” Chief executive Sue Chetwin says six out of 10 products tested didn’t provide the sun protection claimed. One product – Coola Classic Body Sunscreen Plumeria SPF30 – only gave low protection of SPF6 in Consumer NZ’s test, despite claiming high protection of SPF30. The other five products were labelled as SPF50 or SPF50+, but Consumer NZ’s test found they did not meet these claims, returning SPFs ranging from 16 to 42. “While these SPF ratings mean the sunscreens still provide moderate or high protection, our testing found they don’t provide the protection claimed on the label,” Sue says. She says four of the companies,
including Coola, provided lab reports showing their products had been tested and met their label claims. However, two reports dated from 2015 and Coola’s report was from 2013. In response to Consumer NZ’s findings, Coola is commissioning a review of its formula. “There’s no requirement for sunscreen manufacturers to regularly test. But that’s what they should be doing to ensure their products continue to provide the protection claimed,” says Sue. In its 2017 round of testing, Consumer NZ found only nine of 20 sunscreens met their SPF label claims and requirements for broad-spectrum protection. “New Zealand has one of the highest rates of skin cancer and melanoma in the world, but the sunscreen standard remains voluntary.” The Ministry of Health is working on legislation to regulate therapeutic products, but no decision has been made on whether it will include sunscreens. “This legislation provides an opportunity to finally make the sunscreen standard mandatory and ensure no sunscreen is sold unless it’s been properly tested.”

Jazzing up Nelson this summer Kate Russell Nelson’s annual Jazzfest is back for another summer of swinging sounds and is promising something for everyone. The festival, which is now in its 28th year, kicks off today and runs until Saturday with more than ten venues around the city playing host to some of New Zealand’s finest musicians. These include internationallevel trumpeter Geoff Culverwell with Paul Dyne, Hot Tonic, Wellington’s Hip-Town Bangers plus the Swingin’ Sisters with the Tom Rainey quartet. But committee member Annabelle Boyes says one of her “must see” acts this year is the All Girl Big Band from Christchurch. “Their show tells the story of female vocalists from the early days of jazz right up to the present day. Apart from the delight in seeing a full big band of women, this is one classy show.” The 18-piece band is made up of full sections of trombone, trumpet, sax and rhythm, and a vocalist. “We are fortunate to have so

The festival will open tonight with the Washborne Gardens twilight concert, which is back after a two-year break, and will close with the ever-popular Founders Park Twilight Concert on Saturday evening. Annabelle says those who enjoy the energy and excitement of improvised jazz can head to
East St Café each night of the festival. “This where musicians gather after their earlier shows are done, to let their hair down at the late-night Pic’s Peanut Butter Jam sessions.” Fairfield House is also hosting a series of five jazz concerts in their courtyard, featuring five different bands from Wellington. Annabelle says Nelson’s jazz
scene is thriving. “We are proud that Nelson bands make up about half of the line-up this year and bring big band, blues, soul, youth and jazz bands to the mix. “We are really looking forward to that summer festival feeling that live music brings.” Nelson Jazzfest runs from 2 - 5 January, for the full programme and tickets, visit www.nelsonjazzclub.co.nz

Nelsonians awarded in New Year’s Honours Five Nelsonians have been honoured for their services to the community. Russell Howie was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to environmental resource management. Russell has been involved with environmental resource management since the mid-1960s and has been a Commissioner of the Environment Court since 2001.
Michael Johnston was also made an officer for services to geological science and history. Mike is a leading authority on the geology of the Nelson region and has authored numerous publications including books and papers on New Zealand geology, geologists, mining history, early European exploration of New Zealand, and Nelson history. Rore Stafford was also made an officer for services to Māori. He colodged the Wai 56 Claim in 1986 on behalf of descendants of the Māori customary owners of the Nelson Tenths’ Lands and Occupation Lands in Nelson, Motueka and Golden Bay, and has led the team dedicated to seeking restitution for 31 years.
Rore has been a member of the Board of Wakatū Inc. since 1985 and a key driver behind the strategy and direction of Wakatū’s commercial businesses Whenua and Kono NZ LP. Denise Hutchins made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services as a Justice of the Peace and to the health sector. Denise was President of the Royal Federation of New Zealand Justices Association from 2016 to 2018. She became a Justice of the Peace in 2002 and was elected to the Nelson Tasman Association Executive in 2004, where she was later elected President. She was elected to the Royal Federation Board in 2011 as Central Region Representative and then as President.

What’s your perfect Nelson day? With long summer days ahead, we asked three Nelsonians what their idea of a perfect day was to make the most of the holidays. Tom Irvine, Nelson Preparatory School student: My perfect Nelson day would get getting up early and going for a mountainbike up the Maitai and then having a swim in the river with my friends to cool off. We usually drop in at Tozetti on Vanguard St on the way home for a snack. I’d
probably relax for a bit and read a book at home before heading out to Rocks Rd in the evening for a jump off into the sea and another swim. Then, after drying off, I would grab an ice cream from Raglan Roast. They do the best ice creams. That would be a pretty big day. Susa Guhl, real estate agent: I would always start my weekend at the Freehouse. Friday nights all my friends go here, and we go out for dinner after. Then on Saturday
morning I go for a walk with the dog. My favourite walk is along the Maitai up the centre of New Zealand and then down. Then go to the market and stuff your face full of whatever you can find. I’m there early before anyone else. I get all my vegetables there, bread, cheese, eggs and then home. If I could I would go and bike out to Rabbit Island and then go over to Mapua on the ferry and spend some time, there and ride back. Sounds pretty perfect.
Ashleigh Spratt, physio: I would head to the Styx Restaurant and Bar for the platters and dinner followed by the Sprig for some live music! Waking up on a sunny Saturday morning for a jog along Rocks Road and maybe even a dip at Tahunanui Beach depending on the heat. Then I would head to the Saturday market for some tasters-my favourite is the Kaikoura blue cheese. Time for some adrenaline. I would hop on my mountainbike and head up to Codgers mountain bike park
and try not to fall off and break myself. After a few hours riding I would head out to my parent’s farm in Lower Moutere for some proper home-made food-even some Yorkshire puddings if I was lucky. Then we would all cool off in the pool and spa for the afternoon. Then we would all head out to Kaiteriteri Beach for some kai and coffee. Followed by the mountainbike park. After riding we would go to Ginger in Riwaka for the amazing pies and a real fruit ice cream.

Lifejacket initiative sinks out of date safety vests Sara Hollyman Nelson boaties will have the opportunity to check and upgrade their lifejackets this Sunday, thanks to Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign. The Old4New van has been visiting popular boat ramps and key locations across the country since December 1, offering locals the chance to bring in their old, damaged or out-of-date lifejackets for heavily discounted brand-new Hutchwilco lifejackets. It will be at Akersten St Boat Ramp this Sunday, January 6, between 2pm and 6pm. Coastguard CEO Patrick Holmes says lifejackets save lives, but old lifejackets are no good in an emergency. “Lifejackets that are over ten years old should be replaced, even if they look ok to the eye.” Patrick says seawater, sun and general wear and tear impact how effective they are and many old lifejackets won’t even float, which is a serious concern in an emergency. “Worryingly, many people are also still using lifejackets filled with kapok – a fluffy plant fibre, similar to cotton, which can absorb water. Charging ahead with an electric car Last week editor Charles Anderson spent a week with an e-bike. This week reporter Sara Hollyman tries out an e-car to see if it really is the future. As I get dropped off at The Car Company to collect my new electric vehicle, I’m already anxious. I’m not a person who likes to get anywhere near fuel light in my car and I can happily say I have never, in my thirty-odd years, run out of gas. I can say though, I am super excited to not have to worry about re-mortgaging my home to fill my petrol tank for an entire week. As I jump into the immaculate Nissan Leaf, salesman Ryan Sendall tells me I have 154km left before I run out of charge, but as soon as I reach the end of the carpark it has plummeted to 123km, so I am immediately sceptical. The first thing I notice is that the gear stick looks like an air freshener, if Ryan wasn’t there to show me what to do there is no way I’d be able to get this thing to move, that’s for sure. A short-time later I’m back in my office a mere 6km away from the car-yard and I’m back up to 126km, a little confusing but let’s just live a little. After a little research, I discover that my soon-to-be-favourite car of all time, recharges itself while braking and travelling downhill,
how clever! So, on my second day, I am a little less worried that I will be stranded in the middle of the road, unable to be towed, running a 40m extension cord to the nearest power point. (Another point to note, you can’t tow these bad boys if you run out of charge). Today I am curious, how much longer till the power runs out (now at 50%), how long will it take to charge, what is the maintenance costs on these vehicles? My husband and I sat down and figured out that at 30kw per charge, it would cost us $8.43 to charge this thing from flat. Definitely cheaper than the $100 odd dollars my car takes to fill at the moment. After doing some research online I have also found out that the government is waiving the road user charges until two per cent of New Zealand’s vehicles are electric, another bonus. After that, I’m assuming us electric car drivers will have to buy road users just like diesel-operated vehicles. Makes sense really, how else will they pay for the roads when we all make the inevitable switch to electric and stop buying petrol? The rest of the week passes very uneventfully, no break downs, no dramas, just plain electric sailing. Over the week I did around 350km and had to charge the car twice overnight (after a sneaky

Small adventure in your own backyard Weekly editor Charles Anderson takes a kayak trip to Haulashore Island with his stepson. I had long looked out at Haulashore Island. It is just there, seemingly only a stone’s throw from the edge of Rocks Rd. But I had never made the trip. It always seemed too close to bother with. However, during one school holiday morning I decided to take my 11-year-old stepson Elijah out there. Of course, he had already been there before so it wasn’t quite as intrepid as I hoped. Still, it was a small expedition that can easily be taken from Wakefield Quay. We rented a kayak from just outside the Styx restaurant, carefully stepped in and away we went. I
hadn’t been out on the water for many years and the view it gives of the Nelson coastline is really quite novel. You see things that you would never appreciate from simply walking along Rocks Rd. It took us only about 15 minutes to reach the shoreline and we followed in the footsteps of why the island was named thus and dragged the kayak up on the beach. We were the only ones there, which was a curious thing when you looked back to the city and saw the bustle of people going about their day to day lives. Haualshore Island was originally part of the Boulder Bank, but was formed in 1903 by pioneer settlers dredging The Cut through the southern tip of the bank to improve
shipping access to Port Nelson. We wandered around the island as Elijah told me about his latest video game missions. We found memorial plaques and stumbled through the island’s swampy middle. To be honest, its a pretty grubby looking island. There was some rubbish, an old tent and sleeping mat that had long been discarded. We walk to the edge of where a concrete wharf seemingly once was and I asked Elijah to pose for a photo. We didn’t realise that only metres away was a slumbering seal. We only had the kayak for an hour so we jumped back aboard and made our way back to the shoreline. It was a small expedition but a worthwhile one.

Black Caps out for revenge Jonty Dine The Black Caps have dropped only one game at Saxton Oval and will be looking to exact revenge as they take on Sri Lanka in the third ODI at Saxton Oval on Tuesday. The Kiwis boast a healthy record in Nelson having won six from eight games with one no result. Most recently the side comfortably defeated Pakistan at the oval in January by 8 wickets. Its only loss came against the Sri Lankan’s in 2015 when a master class from Tillakaratne Dilshan took the game away from the Black Caps after posting a competitive 276. The visitors will, of course, be without the dynamic Dilshan as it remains in a rebuilding phase following his retirement with fellow legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayewardene. The hosts hopes will hang largely on all-rounder Angelo Matthews and skipper Lasith Malinga. While Matthews is the only Sri Lankan averag-

ing over 40 in ODIs, the side does possess plenty of threats including young keeper Niroshan Dickwella and veteran left-hand opener Upul Tharanga. Opener Martin Guptill has also recently returned to the international scene after nursing a calf injury and will be looking to cash in on an historically batters friendly surface with his destructive partner Colin Munro. Saxton has seen four international scores of 300 posted, the Black Caps best being the 285 scored against the West Indies in 2014, Both Williamson and Guptill average over 50 at Saxton Oval with a combined 600 runs from 14 innings. A year running Nelson City Council After spending 10 years at Kapiti Coast Council Pat Dougherty says he is now in his “dream job” as chief executive of Nelson City Council. Sara Hollyman sat down with Pat to see how he’s enjoyed the first year at the helm. How have you found your first year in the job? Its been a busy year but it’s been fun, this is the job that I’ve always wanted - to be chief executive of Nelson City Council, so to get back here is my dream job. Some days are more fun than others and I think I’m making a contribution, making a difference. One of the things that’s very clear in this organisation, there’s some really good people in here but they’re very busy, we’re trying to do an awful lot. So we’re getting some people into the right places and trying to make our systems and processes more staff-friendly and customer-friendly, but the one thing is that every time you change something production slows down as people get used to a new way of doing things so, I have to be patient and make change slowly. What are your goals for the next
12 months? My objective is to get a happy, well-performing team, that’s in touch with the community, respected by the community and that we have an 'open for business' ethos. At the moment we’re focussing on building the team and getting our systems and processes in the right place and I think that’s going to be a lot of the focus for the next year as well, and starting to implement more of an open for business, so when someone comes to the front counter and asks a question about can they do this, rather than just a straight no, that it's ‘well, no you can’t do that, but have you considered doing this? What’s the most enjoyable part of the last 12 months? I think slowly making things better for the staff is the thing I take most pride in, improving the way we’re reporting and providing advice to the councillors, they seem to be enjoying that as well. What’s something about you personally that we won’t know? I play this strange sport called underwater hockey. In your time at council how has
building, and that sort of thing.

When I first arrived all our records were based on aerial photos, it was someone’s full-time job to draw the new lines of the pipes on great big aerial photos and they were our record system. Everything was paper-based now we’ve got a GIS system that people can access online. So the information that we have available is just so much better than it ever was and that openness and transparency that really just wasn’t possible when you only had one photocopier in the
What’s the hardest aspect of your job? Sometimes it’s when you’ve got to say no to somebody. The good thing about working for a local government is that you’re there to make life better for your community but that doesn’t mean that we can use our money to solve someone’s private problem. Sometimes telling someone that it’s an important problem for them but it’s their issue to resolve and we can’t use ratepayers money to do that, that can be hard, you’d like to help but that’s just not ... you can’t help everybody. And that’s in a lot of areas, we’re the subject matter experts, people come to us asking us for an answer but we can also help them find a solution to 80 per cent of their problems. We may not be able to solve it all. Sometimes that advice, if we want to take a completely risk averse approach, someone will ask us a question and we’ll say either yes or no, but if you want to be customer friendly there’s probably just a little bit more risk involved in saying well you could try it this way, still not acting as the advisor or consultant but trying to be more helpful.

I like that in local government you can really see you are making a difference, it’s a good team here, and it has a good feel to it and I have to say it’s nice to be back in Nelson, you don’t realise what a great place it is until you leave. Not just the climate but the CBD, The Theatre Royal, NCMA, Suter, Saxton’s, we’ve got all these amazing facilities that make it such a great place to be. How has your career progressed to get you to where you are today? I started off as the services engineer, when I first arrived the Maitai Dam was half built so one of my first jobs was to get that commissioned and running. Then I became manager technical services, so initially it was wastewater and storm water, and then eventually I became manager technical services so then I was responsible for providing all engineering services and public transport to the council. Then I did an MBA and got appointed group manager corporate services. So then I was in charge of Human Resources, I.T, public communications and customer services. And then as deputy chief executive I applied for the job at Kapiti as chief executive of that council.

Crust: 1/2 cup raw almonds 1/2 cup dates 1/4 teaspoon sea salt Filling: 1 1/2 cups raw cashews Juice of 2 lemons 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1/3 cup of coconut oil 1/3 cup pure (Canadian) maple syrup 1 cup strawberries (frozen if out of season) Chocolate topping: 1/2 cup raw cacao powder 1/3 cup coconut oil 150ml pure (Canadian) maple syrup Start by soaking the cashews and dates overnight and thawing berries (if frozen). Line chosen dish

For the chocolate topping, place all ingredients into a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water) stirring constantly with a spatula for approximately 4 minutes or until the mixture thickens and comes together. Pour over set filling and smooth the surface. Set cheesecake in freezer overnight. Slice and serve with freshly picked local berries and a dollop of coconut yoghurt.

Top of the south marine farmers set environmental standards Kat Pickford Marlborough marine farmers have collected more than 32 tonnes of debris from beaches in the Marlborough Sounds over the past nine years. It is all part of a programme which aims to create a culture of environmental awareness in the industry. Marine Farming Association president Jonathan Large says the industry started beach clean ups in the 1990s, but didn’t start keeping records until 2009. Since records began, 32,996 kilograms of rubbish has been picked up from beaches in the Marlborough Sounds where marine farming activities take place largely Port Underwood, Pelorus and Wainui Bay.
It may come as a surprise to some that more than 60 per cent of total debris collected has been non-aquaculture related, says Jonathan. “The non-aquaculture rubbish we find is largely plastics - berley bags, bait bags, plastic bottles, cans, that sort of thing.” Over the past decade, Marine Farming Association members have put in more than $1.2m in time and vessel hours to beach clean-ups. But their efforts go further than that. The group which represents several aquaculture companies in the top of the south has established operating procedures to prevent rubbish going overboard, such as ensuring rubbish bins and scoop nets are readily available, untying rather than cutting lashings and

to reduce the impact on local residents and holiday makers, especially in peak times. “We’ve gone into a great deal of detail looking at the way we do things so that environmental awareness starts before we even leave land,” Jonathan says. “We hold regular workshops with the crew and talk about improvements and operational things, we definitely want to be a solid fence at the top of the cliff, rather than the ambulance at the bottom.” Industry feedback showed members wanted some recognition for their efforts, so in 2017, the Marine Farming Association Environment Certification Programme was established. The certification records individual company’s agreement to the objectives of the programme
and adherence to the industry’s operating procedures and codes of practice. Vessels and farms are regularly monitored to ensure crew are adhering to the criteria and noncompliance can result in the removal of their certification status. “We recognise as an industry that we’re not squeaky clean and we do have an effect on the environment, but we are actively working to try and minimise that as much as possible,” Jonathan says. “We can’t just put our heads in the sand and pretend there’s not a problem, or not change because that’s the way we’ve always done things. “Our guys are proud and passionate marine farmers and we want Marlborough to be proud of what we do too.”

Nelson set to retain sun crown The region looks set to hold the sunshine crown this year as official data reveals that Nelson is pipping Marlborough at the post. According to Niwa scientist Ben Noll, Nelson has had 2318 hours of sunshine in the year to November. This was ahead of its nearest rival Marlborough which has had 2289 hours. “That’s almost 30 hours which is a good amount,” Ben says. However, he didn’t want to speak definitively as the year was still on. “But if we look to those maps the sunshine is just a little less than usual in December but nothing to tip the scales.”

The Nelson Jaguar Club is set to host their bi-annual fundraiser ‘Jags n Art in the Park’ this Sunday. The display at Broadgreen Historic House will have around 40 cars on show from very early models such as a
replica ss100 through to the latest model XE, courtesy of Archibalds in Christchurch. The cars will be laid out in a ‘time-line’ to offer a true journey through the life of Jaguar. Club President John Eales says the event will raise money for the club’s defibrillator which they purchased two
years ago. He says, originally, they purchased the defibrillator because there are older members in the club, but carry it to all events because they know it’s not just older people who could need it. “About 12 members have all been through the training on it, I hope we never have to use
it but if we’ve got to use it for the members of the public then we will.” The club invites the public to come along between 10am and 3pm to what promises to be a fun family day out. There will be a band, sausage sizzle and art on display from local artists and members.

Award has seen names such as Lydia Ko, Jacko Gill and Eliza McCartney etched onto it. Risaleaana hopes to join that illustrious class of athlete. Her first year out of high school has seen her become a Black Fern, claim a Commonwealth Games gold, a youth Olympic gold and she was also named Nelson’s junior sportswoman of the year. Risaleaana is quick to deflect praise for her success. “I was not expecting the Halberg nomination at all, so it was quite a surprise," she says. "Everything I have achieved this year has come from the help and support from a lot of people.” She will have some stiff competition - including White Ferns star Amelia Kerr, White Ferns goalie Anna Leat and World Sailing Youth champion Josh Armit. Risaleaana says her game has been taken to another level after rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the world. “I’m always learning and growing as a player and
