Support for the embattled Tahunanui Community Centre has been swift. The Nelson City Council announced on Monday that they would commit to fund management assistance to allow the centre to remain open for public use for the next three months. A working group of local business people has also been set up to help steer the society that governs the centre back on the right track. And the children who went to the adjoining preschool have been offered places by the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association. The moves come after revelations that the Tahunanui Community Centre Incorporated lost more than $100,000 in less than a year. At a special meeting last week, it was voted to commence proceedings to liquidate the society which had oversight of the society and its adjacent preschool. Currently the society owes $54,000, which exceeds its cash assets by almost $47,000 –

No race day is complete without a fashion competition for best attire and Nelson didn’t hold back on Sunday at the annual Summer Festival Harness Racing. The competition saw everything from the classic Little Black Dress to greens, blues and the ultimately top fashion pick of a bright yellow and
pink dress. The men’s category offered just as much variety, with a classic tweed suit winning out over the more flamboyant stripe and shorts options. Emma Silke-French purchased her gorgeous yellow and pink dress online and made everything else work with it and judge Ange Leonard said she was definitely “the whole package”. “I think yellow was the colour this year, there was just some-
thing about it that was nice and vibrant.” Ange, along with fellow judges Yvonne Bowater and Claire Scott, took in the whole outfit right down to the shoes and the head pieces. Macca Springer was sitting down for a coffee with his parents when they bought up the idea of entering the competition. He took out first place in the men’s category with his tweed suit from Nelson Tailors
Menswear. “They sorted me out with an outfit. They put it together and I tried it on, and we all just thought ‘yip that looks good’.” Ange says Macca’s outfit was something “very different” to what they’ve had on the podium in previous year. “I just loved his suit and the cheese cutter hat, it was very cool.” The winners took home a share of $3000 worth of prizes from local fashion stores.

this is largely made up of the need to pay its staff. The centre put up a notice on its Facebook page in December saying that it had to close immediately. The Nelson City Council community services chair Gaile Noonan says that the council wanted to help the board in a practical way to maintain access for the public while the board worked through the potential liquidation process. “We’re very appreciative of the volunteers on the board and those assisting them, and we want to be supportive of the Tahuna community. We have taken this step in consultation with the TCC board and we’re working with them on other issues such as the lease for the preschool.” Council’s temporary funding will

Meanwhile, Murray Leaning, who is leading the working group of local businesspeople says that the funding is the first step to getting the centre back on its feet. “From there it’s only a short leap to getting it fully operational.” However, he admitted that the centre had a lot of issues to un-
tangle. “There are financial issues, governance issues, management issues, administration issues.” He also says that the society has been operating unconstitutionally as it only had three board members when it needed five. It was also unclear exactly how much the society had in debt but it was in the tens of thousands. Murray says that many volunteer boards work away without knowing the consequences of certain actions.

Now a special meeting to elect more board members is set down for the end of the month. He says all options are on the table, including potentially selling the building where the preschool operates from. The council owns the land. “The centre is going to continue,” Murray says. “Absolutely every effort is going to be made to continue. It’s our whole focus. Doctor’s strike causes surgery delays Sara Hollyman Patients expecting to have non-urgent elective surgeries or scheduled outpatient appointments at Nelson Hospital over the past two days have more than likely been delayed. At 7am on Tuesday, a 48-hour nationwide strike began by Resident Medical Officers who are covered by the New Zealand Resident Doctors’ Association (NZRDA) collective employment agreement. Resident Medical Officers are registered medical practitioners who range in experience from first-year qualified doctors to those with more than 12 years’ experience. The doctor’s employment agreement expired nearly a year ago and NZRDA national president Dr Courtney Brown says after nearly a year of bargaining there are still significant claw backs for resident doctors. “Whilst in 2018 most health workers gained improvements to terms and conditions of employment without facing claw backs, the DHBs have taken a distinctly different approach to resident doctors. It feels like they are punishing us for our successful safer hours campaign.”

NZRDA senior advocate David Munro says they entered negotiations last week with District Health Boards which were some of the least productive he’s seen in his 30 years as an industrial advocate. “DHB’s were quite disrespectful of the resident doctors and the issues they are facing, so needless to say negotiations were unsuccessful.” David says some doctors around the country chose to get out and picket, although there were no known sites in Nelson, but others were using the time for some much-needed rest time. “Ironically the strike is about the long hours and the fact that DHB’s haven’t been recruiting enough doctors to cover that work time.
“Many RMO’s are using this time to rest and recuperate and spend time with family and friends.” A Nelson Marlborough Health spokesperson said last week that they did not know how many RMO’s would be participating in the strike, but contingency plans were being put in place to minimise disruption to the public during the planned strike. “Nelson Marlborough Health employs 96 RMOs; not all are NZRDA members – around 82 per cent are union members (Either of NZRDA or STONZ).” The strike will end at 7am Thursday but NMH say people should not delay seeking medical treatment if they need urgent medical assistance.

NEWS Water restrictions loom: As the summer temperatures continue to soar, local councils are asking locals to conserve water. World’s biggest ketch in Nelson Staff reporter A monster ketch belonging to a Norwegian billionaire is turning heads after it docked in Nelson on Tuesday. The ultra-luxury Aquijo boasts pools, a Turkish bath, a sauna and a crew of 17 to look after just 12 guests. Built in the Netherlands for an estimated $175 million two years ago, it is available during the European summer for charter through specialised agents. It is understood the ketch belongs to Kjell Inge
Rokke, one of the richest men in Norway, who made his fortune through his business Aker which specialises in fishing, construction and engineering. Aquijo is the biggest sailing mega-yacht to come to New Zealand. At 86m long it is one of the world’s largest private sailing ketches, with a total sail area is 5000sqm - equivalent to that of half a rugby field. Yachting World says the sociable main deck includes the dining room and main saloon, linked to the outside deck by an inside-outside bar.
“The yacht’s real showcase feature is the ‘beach club’ on the lower deck, which includes a Jacuzzi, sauna, hammam/ Turkish bath, rainfall shower, and room for gym equipment, with an open walkway through to the transom swim platform.’’ There is a further whirlpool spa bath on the outer deck. Its co-skipper Luke Hoskins is orginially from Matakana and has been on the vessel since last year. He said that Aquijo was “an extraordinary yacht’’ which handled exceptionally under sail.
“It’s impossible to describe the feeling when you first bear away and she powers up. Everybody who sails on her is amazed at how well she handles and how graceful she feels.” Since departing Europe in November last year, the vessel had covered more than 55,000km and experienced all kinds of conditions. “We sailed around Cape Horn in 50 knots and pretty big seas - albeit with only the staysail up as it was so windy,’’ he said. - With NZ Herald

Otago had an 11.7 per cent increase to $586,950 along with Northland (up 9.4 per cent to $580,950), Nelson/Tasman (up 7.2 per cent to $619,600), Waikato (up 5.9 per cent to $575,300) and the Bay of Plenty (up 5 per cent to $637,800).

Code of conduct Woman pleads guilty complaint causes concern following shoplifting spree Sara Hollyman
Nelson mayor Rachel Reese’s decision not to include allegations of serious misconduct against councillor Mike Rutledge in an investigation into his behaviour represents a failure of leadership, says councillor Matt Lawrey. The code of conduct breach stems from an incident on May 17, last year when Mike had an “outburst” over reduced funding for Natureland Zoo, of which his wife, Meg Rutledge, is a director. Mike has a noted conflict of interest and doesn’t take part in discussions relating to the wildlife sanctuary. Thinking that council was adjourned he re-entered the chambers to see information on funding reduction displayed on a screen and made a comment to the effect of “what clown” put that up there. Mayor Rachel Reese laid a code of conduct complaint against him and an independent investigation was then launched. Nelson barrister Camilla Owen was appointed to undertake the investigation and provide a report to the Code of Conduct Committee which met to discuss the findings on Monday. Rachel says she chose to keep the complaint “focussed on the matters that could undermine the public’s trust and confidence in Council decision-making”. She says councillors with concerns about their personal interaction
with Mike, those who have direct knowledge, are “far better placed to make their own Code of Conduct complaint if they feel one is warranted”. Matt Lawrey says Rachel publicly stated that there would be a “proper” Code of Conduct investigation that would be “fair to everyone involved” and then requested an investigation that “totally ignored” Mike’s “unacceptable behaviour towards four councillors”. “Why would anyone else lodge a complaint when the mayor told us the investigation would be fair for everyone involved? Councillors trusted her to do the right thing and she has seriously let us down.” Mike provided a statement to the committee saying he was “overall comfortable” that the report offered a fair reflection of events. The committee decided that Mike was in breach of the code of conduct for his comment and that a letter of censure should be the penalty as he had already willingly offered an apology. Councillor Gaile Noonan said the committee did not approve of the type of behaviour but many penalty options were “counter-productive”. Bill Dahlberg chaired the committee and says everyone agreed that something was said. “Whether it was 12 or 20 words there’s still some discussion, but she’s (Camilla) agreed that it would’ve been better if nothing was said.”

A notorious Nelson shoplifter has pleaded guilty to multiple charges of theft ranging from footwear to meat. Bonnie Schuster was convicted of eight counts of theft and one charge of wilful damage after a shoplifting spree late last year. She stole thousands of dollars’ worth of items from Bunnings Warehouse, Rebel Sport, Z, Spotlight, Mobil, Pak’nSave and The Warehouse. The spree began on October 14 when she attempted to steal two blowtorches valued at $150 from Bunnings.
When approached by staff, she ran away. On October 16, she began to spend $1300 on a stolen pay wave card at McDonalds and several petrol stations. Less than two weeks later, Schuster collected clothing valued at $120 from Rebel Sport and attempted to remove the security tags in a changing room, damaging an $80 pair of Nike shoes. Staff heard this and confronted her, but she again ran away. She returned on October 31 and managed to leave with a number of items including socks, tights and shoes but was caught on CCTV. The next month she took $55

Later that month Schuster stole two whole beef ribeyes from Richmond Pak’nSave which were valued at $307. On December 14, she took a pair of Timberland Boots from Whitwell’s Menswear in Motueka and less than a week later she was caught by staff at Spotlight attempting to leave the store with $1500 worth of candles and linen. Schuster said that she wanted the items but did not have the money to pay for them.

Nelson homeless man Jason McCutcheon has been suffering sleepless nights on the street after his make-shift bed was given a make-over. Jason has made the benches outside the Nelson Provincial Museum his home for the past several months causing a stir of controversy. The museum received a number of complaints about Jason and has now taken action. Metal armrests have been installed at one-metre intervals along the benches, preventing anyone from lying down. However, museum management say the change is part of a larger upgrade to the exterior of the building and is not about dissuading Jason from sleeping there. Other planned works for the museum include improvements to the roof garden, new retail shop fitting, improvements to the air conditioning, and activation of the kerbside space. Jason says it is now impos-
sible to sleep on the benches as they are, and he is not sure where he will go. “You’d have to do it standing up, so I haven’t really been sleeping.” In October last year, the Nelson City Council confiscated Jason's belongings, which were outside the museum, as part of a bylaw to discourage continual rough sleeping in the central city. In 2017, the council brought in a new “City Amenity Bylaw” that sought to mitigate some of the issues caused by Lewis Stanton’s long-running protest outside Farmers on Trafalgar St. Under the bylaw, sleeping or otherwise occupying a footpath or road at night for two or more hours requires permission. Obstructing window displays and/or signage is also forbidden. Despite the confiscation and the bench renovation Jason is still keen to keep staying at his “home”. Museum chief executive Lucinda Blakely-Jimson did not respond to requests for

comment, but has previously said that the museum recognise that homelessness in any form and rough sleeping is not the best outcome for any Nelson resident. “We are hoping that the council will be able to find a healthier and safer option for Jason.” A number of accommodation offers have been put forward to Jason but he always declines, saying he prefers to be on the street. “This is my home.” Before arriving in Nelson earlier last year, Jason says he had not slept rough before, but part of the charm was that “no one is in charge of me”. He says the ongoing bench battle has been mentally and physically exhausting but still plans to stay put on the Nelson street. Jason says he is becoming increasingly frustrated by people questioning his accommodation choice. “Why do they even care? I’m not hurting anyone. "People want to know why I live like this, you can’t buy freedom.”

Hair today, gone tomorrow Jonty Dine In the late 1980s, while travelling in France, Frog Twissell had his car broken into and his beloved razor stolen. The Nelson man has not shaved since that fateful day. Over the years, Frog kept his fantastic facial hair growing and, by the time he walked through the doors of Stormy's Man Cave on Saturday, his beard had grown
down to his chest. But even before then he has always sported some pretty impressive facial hair. However, spurred on by his wife Hazel, Frog is now set to join the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade. "It sounded like an interesting challenge so I thought I would give [volunteering] a go." So that beard has become a safety hazard. To avoid a painful singeing of his beloved beard, Frog was faced

with the difficult decision to shave it all off. Frog farewelled his luscious beard, which grew down to a 'professor' on his ‘beardometer’ in front of friends and family. Barber Shawn Stormann did the honours, working Frog's beard down to a manageable size with a pair of clippers before opening up his long forgotten pores with a hot towel. Then came the razor. Frog didn't
seem surprised to see the blade that had eluded him for almost 30 years. He hid any emotion as the folicles hit the floor. However, after the process had been completed Frog’s family were indeed shocked to see their loved one had a face, after being hidden for years beneath the dense scrub. The 53-year-old says he had his moments of sadness leading up
to the big shave. “They came and went.” However, he had the bigger vision of the volunteer fire fighters on this mind. Instead of grieving for his lost fluff, Frog says that the biggest change will be getting comfortable with a razor again. “Having to shave every day will be a big adjustment,” Frog says. "That will be the only difference on the inside."

It’s her quiet place, underneath the surface. Two years ago, when Raeana Papuni was a victim of domestic violence, she found the water was a place of solace. “I could block it all out. I could think,” she says. On a daily basis she would be physically and mentally abused. She would wear long pants and sleeves, even on a hot day, to cover the bruises. She would always wear sunglasses to cover her eyes. Every time that happened she was drawn to the water – to the river, the beach, even the bath. “When my head went under the water it would block out all the sound, all the echoes in my brain,” she says. “Then when I ascended up it was like I was fresh again.” The water also made Raeana feel like she had some control in her life. Underwater she had to hold her breath and control it. “I was empowered, it was something I could control.” If Raeana could choose
she would live underwater. Which is why she now wants to expand the healing she felt from the water to other women. Her organisation Ascend looks to take women out on the water – to kayak, dive or paddleboard and give them the confidence they need in their life. She has been doing it for some time but now she is looking to raise funds to help expand it into the community – to other women and children of low income families. On January 29, Raeana is holding a “seafood fiesta” at the Boathouse to share the message of Ascend. She has been donated equipment from local water sport retailers to auction off. “It’s really exciting. It's a huge step for me. In the past I had no confidence. I was stripped of it, I wouldn’t even talk to people. I didn’t like myself.” But, for Raeana, the water was healing and she wants it to be for other people too. Search and Rescue on an electric roll
HELP!
Charles Anderson Nelson’s search and rescuers are joining the electric revolution with a brand-new e-bike that will aid them in their operations. The Hybrid bike was donated by local e-bike manufacture Frank Witowski, after he learned of the work that SAR does across the region. “These guys volunteer all their time. I thought ‘I’m only a little guy but how nice if I can do something for the community’.” At a recent ceremony, SAR’s Sherp Tucker said that he met Frank when he was introduced to him by his neighbour. Sherp asked Frank if he had ever thought about making bikes for search and rescue. He then got keen mountainbiker Aaron Hunter to see if the idea was a good one. “All these people rode the bike and they were impressed because it never took the energy out of them.” The idea is that if SAR is looking for someone, par-

It took him three hours and 45 minutes for the 50km loop. “As it stands, it’s going to be a big tool in the toolbox.” He said it would also work all the way out to the Heaphy Track and Old Ghost Road. “Even for urban search and rescue, I can see there being a use for it. “I can certainly see more of
these hanging in the SAR tool shed. I can see this being a big addition to our organisation.” Frank says he was pleased to donate the bike. “If the bike can save somebody's life or get them out of a difficult situation, then that would be a really cool thing.” Frank is modifying the bike before handing it over to SAR.

KNOW THE LIMITS OF YOUR VESSEL In one instance the vessel was anchored over the stern, the freeboard reduced by the drag of the anchor and a wave over the stern soon swamped the boat. In the other instance it was simply two men moving into a poor position on the boat and over she went. Some poor snapper is probably still hooked. Don’t take chances, get educated, don’t drink whilst boating, don’t speed in a seaway, don’t go swimming unless you are meant to. Don’t, don’t don’t , I know it’s nagging but here is a positive – DO take a bucket. There is no better pump than a frightened man with a bucket.

Your Voice No more plastic bags How many people are wondering what to do about kitchen bin liners now that we no longer get supermarket plastic bags to do the job? I have the answer! You can buy compostable cornstarch liners at New World which are perfect for the job, but you have to really look for them as they are right down at floor level. There are also plastic bin liners available but that seems to be defeating the purpose of getting rid of plastic. These corn-starch bags come in rolls of 30 and they are small size, which is just right for the 12 litre plastic kitchen bins that many homes have now. Do try it! The hype around supermarket shopping bags is a good start, but it ultimately makes up a small part of the problem. This article just goes to show we're using far too much plastic. It's hard to buy any appliance (or ANYTHING that comes packaged) from a major retailer, without far more plastic (and/or polystyrene) than we want or need. We're a fairly efficient/frugal family, and the amount of plastic we accumulate over a month is quite disturbing. Nelson’s biggest sailing race will celebrate ten years of the regatta in the region this weekend. The 2019 Evolution Sails Regatta gets underway on Friday with more than 30 sailors set to test their skills on Tasman Bay’s waters. The inaugural Nelson Regatta in 2009 aimed to put the region back on the national sailing map. The sailors certainly achieved that as, over the years, the format has evolved to create a competitive and social week of racing that showcases the beauty of Tasman Bay and is a highlight on the sailing calendar. Tasman Bay Cruising Club vice commodore Missy Hearfield says this year they are expanding the regatta to include sports boats,

waters of Tasman Bay have been the playground of New Zealand Olympic and world champion sailors for many years. “This is your opportunity to join this tradition as the Tasman Bay Cruising Club welcomes sailors and supporters to the region.” The regatta is scheduled to start on the evening of January 18 with a rum race in the harbour for all divisions, and these will start two days of round the buoys racing on Saturday. During this time the annual Wellington to Nelson race, and a feeder race
from Waikawa, will bring visiting keelers to Nelson. Keeler racing will continue, with the official keeler division starting on Sunday with three races round the cans for the Romeo and Juliet divisions, and a coastal race for the cruising boats. On Monday, the keelers will set off across Tasman Bay for two days of coastal racing which will include a night in Torrent Bay. “Monday showcases the beauty of Abel Tasman.” Missy says there are already 37 boats entered, with more set to join this week. “We are expecting to hit the 40

mark.” She says sailors will descend on the region from Auckland to Christchurch and as far afield as Australia. Missy says among the early favourites will be veteran crew ‘Gucci’ who have entered every regatta since inception. “Another hot rod will be ‘Bullistic’ from Wellington, while local boats ‘Blackout’ and ‘Same Café’ will be right in contention for the title.” Missy says the sailors are set for a spectacular scene. “We are all so lucky here in Nelson in our beautiful “blind bay” with the national park as our

Protesters hold ‘funeral’ for planet Jonty Dine Protesters took to the streets in Nelson on Saturday to stage a ‘funeral for the earth’ and demand commitment to change. “The earth is dying, but we will not let it die,” organiser Julie Neven says. Dozens of demonstrators marched through the city carrying a symbolic coffin as they grieved for the planet. Traffic was brought to a halt as the group carried its message
from the Trafalgar St i-Site to the Saturday Market. Julie says the organisation is about non-violent rebellion against government inaction on the ecological crisis. “We are here to introduce ourselves to Nelson and express our grief and rage for the damage that’s being done to our world.” She says the day’s action was about making the environmental crisis easier to talk about. Julie says we have to reduce our
current emissions by 50 per cent over the next five years or the world’s temperatures will become unliveable in 2100. “We are not going to give up, we are determined to make a difference and hold our government accountable.” Protester Maria Rollin says the movement is a matter of urgency. “We are all doing our bit, but it needs to be bigger and more urgent, we need to start shouting and not just whispering."

Punters will be assessing the damage to their wallets after the annual Nelson Racing Festival saw a number of upsets at the weekend. Nelson's biggest racing festival attracts thousands to the Richmond Showgrounds. While Christchurch enjoyed the share of victories on day one, the hometown horses came storming back on day two to take out the Nelson Cup. Sunday saw the weekend’s iconic 2400m Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup race get underway just after 6.30pm. Dadndave nosed favourite Huey Lewis by .1 of a second in a thrilling marquee event as former Nelson trainer and driver Tim Trathen claimed the win. The three-year-old had a great run home after being in the middle of the field coming down the final straight to pocket his owner $7500. Tim says it was a big thrill to get the win in his hometown. “It was great for Dad [John Trathen] as a past president and a

panic too much.” Tim was dead last with 400 meters to go. “It wasn’t a big field but thought I better get going and he just cruised down the straight, where I asked for a bit of an effort and

he dug in.” Tim says he was aiming to place but even surprised himself to finish first. “I thought if he got a good run away, we might push for a place but to win it was just unbeliev-

He says Dadndave will hopefully be back in 2020 to defend their title. "My sister’s boy also won the fashion in the field, so it was a great day for the family.” The punters were out in droves to test their luck at the track as the annual festival got underway on Friday afternoon. Club president Kristie Hill says it was another fantastic festival. “We had plenty of quality horses, great crowds and fabulous weather.” She says about 4500 punters attended over the Friday and Saturday. Kristie says the festival was made more special with a local winner taking out the Nelson Cup. “Tim owns the horse with our patron John who had never had a horse win before so it was a very popular result.” While the final figures were still being tallied, Kristie says they are on track to exceed the $117,000 spent on and off course at last year's summer races.

NZ's top drivers battle for national title quick grade and some water was needed to keep the track in race condition as the finals got underway. There were some whoopsies in the final heats as the cars sprinted round the tight Nelson circuit. Local driver Alex Hill made up plenty of places in the first heat only to get caught in the second heat with a car flying across the top of his bonnet. Brett Nicholls placed 9th at the NZ title the previous week but was another who found trouble in the early heat. Nick Fowler was making a return to Super Stock after several seasons away, the borrowed 66r car was starting to get results. His 3rd place in the final race moving him up to 6th overall and the top South Island driver. It was pretty much sprint racing all night, none of the big wind off ’s that featured in the final the week earlier. Scott Joblin made inroads in the early heats and his pole start in the final heats meant everybody had to catch him. Asher Rees tried valiantly from the rear grid but ran out of laps to make enough passes and finished a point behind Scott in

The Westmeat NZ Super Stock GP was a marathon for driver and machine. The hot Nelson sun greeted the drivers at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway as the title was squeezed into a one day event. Consent issues and lack of council motivation meant the Speedway club had little choice but to abandon the event as a two day meeting. But judging by the huge crowd that attended the six hour event, there is strong community support for the speedway club and the many businesses that thrive from the influx of visitors to the province. The GP kicked off at 5pm with two groups running heats to find the top 26 drivers to contest a 3 race final. It was the Rees brothers Asher and Ethan who topped the points after the group stage but Ethan ran into trouble in the first final race ending his chances of a podium finish. The NZ title is a few years away from returning here, hopefully the resource consent issues are sorted by then and the track can get on with the job of putting on a spectacular show that the speedway club has become famous for over recent years.

Dominik Berghamer with a snapper caught just before Christmas. Dominik Berghamer The summer is in full swing, and the water is heating up a little more every day. Usually, this time of the year is not particularly good for snapper fishing because the majority of them are still busy with spawning. But, apparently, a lot of them didn’t get the memo this year. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is still getting reports of good snapper catches, especially out of depths between 35 and 40 metres. Burley and patience appear to be the key to success. The kingies seem to like the warm water, and we are seeing catches from all over the bay. Classic hot spots are the spat farm, off the boulder bank and every rock with a bit of current around it. Just a few days ago, I was driving home along Rocks Road when, all of a sudden, the water exploded next to some stand-up paddle boarders near Fifeshire Rock. Obviously,

a large kingfish was after some early dinner. Trolling Rapalas and casting stick baits seems to be successful but many kingfish are bycatch when fishing for snapper. They are very curious fish, so the aggregation of small fish around the burley cage and the struggling fish being caught attract them like magnets. Make sure your gear can deal to one of these green torpedoes as well when hunting snapper! There have been a few rumours about tuna being caught at the 40m mark off Okiwi Bay but no confirmed catches yet, send us a picture if you get one! The sun is brutal at the moment, so when you go out make sure you take enough water, hats, sunblock and sunglasses. New appointments for Suburbs Jonty Dine Nelson Suburbs has added a pair of its stalwarts to the management ranks as it looks to cement its status as the region’s strongest club. Ryan ‘Skippy’ Stewart has assumed the role of director of football while Neil Connell will step up to co-coach the MPL side with Steve Bignall. The club has taken on Ryan in the full-time development role. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, I do love coaching and playing but I also love working on the ins and outs of the club and trying to help the club go where it needs to be and push it as far as I can.” Ryan says he plans on starting from the bottom to ensure the club has a strong foundation for the future. “I will be working a lot with the juniors, putting things in place that improve the standards and the enjoyment levels for the players.” The Suburbs star says he gained invaluable experience at Coastal Spirit working under Gareth Turnbull,

Ryan says the state of football in the region is healthy. “Nelson has a lot of young talent, we struggle in a small town a bit, but we want to work with the players we have and not pillage players from all over the place.” He says the more they can improve the players at the club the more the region will improve. “We are trying not to be narrow-minded and want to bring players through to the play at the highest level
which comes through club.” With player/coach Ben Wright stepping down, Suburbs has appointed another long-serving club member to the coaching ranks. Neil will assume the role with Steve as this will be the latter’s last year in charge of the senior side. “I’m only going to be here overseeing what Neil does, Neil will be taking the majority of training sessions and eventually I will get out of the way,” Steve says. “This will be my last season, so I will just be looking to
