Kate Russell Nelson’s Coastguard has had the busiest start to the holiday period in years with a 50 per cent increase of call outs on the same time last year. Coastguard Nelson president Wayne Harrison says they have already responded to a range of call outs - including an impressive two-minute rescue where they happened to be in the right place at the right time. “We were on our way out of The Cut to do some training when we spotted a windsurfer in trouble, so we nipped over to him, pulled him aboard and took him back to shore,” he says. The biggest and most challenging was the search for the missing person in the water at the start of the holiday period, with five vessels on the water in the height of the search. “It was a Friday evening with rough sea conditions and rain. It made trying to locate a person in the water very difficult,” says Wayne. The person was eventually brought to safety by the Coastguard. “We had the Coastguard Nelson CRV, three vessels from Nelson Surf Life Saving Club and the Nelson Harbourmaster’s boat. The Westpac

Stories of arguments, beer bottles and family Brittany Spencer Prime Minister Bill English spent his honeymoon there and Nick Smith sank a canoe in the pond during the children’s programme, but Evelyn Dalzell’s memories of family holidays, arguments and beer bottles topped them all. On Friday, the Tahunanui Beach Kiwi Holiday Park and Motel celebrated its 90th birthday, hosting a party and several competitions to mark the milestone. Originally from the West Coast, Nelson woman Evelyn Dalzell took out the ‘Best Story’ competition after writing down

Enitled ‘The Annual Holiday Argument’, Evelyn’s story begins in the 1940s with her and her younger brother Robert lying in bed listening to their parents argue about what to pack into the trailer. “There was never enough room to put everything in the trailer so Dad would always say, ‘Jesus bloody Christ, Ag, where am I going to put that?’,” says Evelyn. “We’d leave a couple of things behind on his insistence and, of course, we needed them as soon as we arrived. And not forgetting the brilliant team co-ordinating it all back at the Rescue Centre.” But Wayne says the most common call out so far this summer have been tow-ins – due to engine failure or boats running out of fuel. Wayne says that they always expect to be busier than normal during the holiday period, mainly due to there being more traffic on the water, but reminds all boaties of the five simple rules to keep them safe in the water – life jackets, skipper responsibility, communications, marine weather and avoiding alcohol. With 25 volunteers, Wayne says that they are always prepared for a call out – even in their family holiday time. “All of the Coastguard Nelson team are volunteers and each one of us knows we can be called upon at any time and any day to go to the assistance of a boatie in need, it is what we train for,” he says. “I would also like to thank our local community, we are fully aware that Coastguard Nelson wouldn’t exist without public support.”

beer bottles and family FROM PAGE 1 lived it down, we always had three or four of the same thing at home because Mum had to go out to Nelson and buy more after Dad insisted we leave it at home.” Evelyn says her family stayed at the same campsite every year, along with many other families who became life-long friends. “It was the highlight of our year because we’d met people the year before and half of our street came back each year, so we’d gather together and go swimming, fishing, and head up the Aniseed Valley together.” Evelyn also remembers scampering around the holiday park like mice with her brother at first light, collecting all the bottles from the previous night’s drinking sessions and stacking them into the trailer to earn pocket money. “When the trailer was full, Dad would take them to where you sell bottles and cash them in. We got one penny for the beer bottles and I think it was threepence

or sixpence for the soft drink bottles. My brother to this day insists that he did the work and I got most of the money.” With its running gags, funny moments and the honesty of a child’s perspective, Evelyn says she loved writing the story for the Collective Memories Competition. “I could’ve kept writing for a week, I can’t help thinking that it’s the best place to spend your childhood.” Tahunanui Beach Kiwi Holiday Park and Motel general manager, Marcel Fekkes, says Evelyn’s story is just one of many submitted to the competition. “Ninety years is pretty impressive when you look at all the people who have stayed with us over that time and we were overwhelmed by all the great stories and photographs people submitted. “Now we’re just looking forward to making it to 100 years and all the changes that will come in the next ten years.” To read Evelyn’s story or view other entries, visit www.collectiveholidaymemories.nz

Jazzfest hits the right notes in Nelson Kate Russell There were plenty of satisfied jazz lovers in Nelson last week, with the 26th Nelson Jazzfest wrapping up on Friday night. Spanning 15 venues, the fourday festival kicked off with the twilight concert at Founders Heritage Park last Tuesday evening – which luckily escaped the day’s persistent rain. Nelson Jazzfest director Paul Gilmour says they had a turnout of around 1000 people, with the rain clearing just in time for the first band. “I was very happy with the turnout – it got the festival

off to a great start. And if the weather had been better, we would have had more people.” The festival saw 18 free events, with all the ticketed events selling out – and despite some changes to the festival this year, such as the move to Founders from Fairfield Park and a later starting date, Paul says it all went very well. “We’ve established that it’s a good format, which we’ll retain,” he says. “I’ve had a lot of really positive feedback - there were lots of people from out of town as well as locals enjoying some of the best jazz musicians in New Zealand.”

Despite a drop in council funding this year the festival still produced some top acts such as Sing Sing Sing, The Troubles, TROQ and the Richter City Rebels. “One local lady came up to me at The Troubles gig at The Boathouse and said it was one of the best shows she has ever seen. It was great.” East St Cafe also hosted jam sessions each night of the festival, which Paul says were very popular. “We’ll definitely keep the jam sessions – every night was just packed out and so much fun - they just gave the whole festival a heart.”

In the years after Leo’s disappearance, police received information which led them to believe someone unknown to Leo was responsible for his death. In 2014 police raided properties in Blenheim looking for Leo’s watch. They also searched for car parts from his Toyota. Police believed the items could lead to charges of murder, manslaughter or grievous bodily harm. Police this week said there were no new leads in Leo’s disappearance but the case was still active and a $50,000 reward was still in place.

Lipp said her biggest hope is that her son his still alive but just hasn’t made contact for some reason. “I am always hoping he is alive and he knows we want him to come back,” Lipp said. “That he can come back and not be too scared or overwhelmed.” “It doesn’t seem like he is alive, but until we know otherwise we always have that hope.” She said her son was a good boy with a kind heart. “If it was foul play he would have been the victim of an opportunistic criminal and he has been in the wrong place at the wrong time.” She urged anyone with even the smallest amount of information to go to police. “If anything knows anything they need to come forward to the police.” Anyone who has information that may assist this investigation can call Nelson Police, Ph 546 3840. Motorcycle show fills hall with classics Brittany Spencer The hum of classic motorcycles could be heard outside the Stoke Memorial Hall all weekend, with the Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Club’s annual show drawing quite a crowd. From Triumphs to BSAs, Ducatis to Indians and the Harley-Davidsons of yesteryear, 77 motorcycles filled the hall in a display designed by Mapua’s “Sir” Greg Olsen. Show organiser Ian Goaten says the weekend was the perfect opportunity for members to show off their engines and people streamed through the doors to take photos and look at all the different makes and models. “We had quite a variety of bikes on show and everyone loved the display, we would’ve had around 1000 people through the doors over the weekend, it was great,” he says. Tahunanui’s Alistair Wright has been a member of the club for five years and had his Ariel Square Four, Laverda 750 GT, Honda 305 Super Sport and his 1965 Scott Flying Squirrel feature in the show.

Alistair says that while he and his mate have had to push it up the hill to his house a fair few times, the Flying Scott was quite advanced for its time. “They were really revolutionary when they were first built, they had a kick start, they were the first bike in the world with auto lube, they were two stroke and they also trail a lovely stream of smoke behind you that keeps cars drivers away from you as you ride.” Alistair bought the rare bike as “a bit of a wreck last year”, but after a couple of hundred hours of cleaning and polishing it’s been restored to its former glory with all original pieces. “I’ve had motorbikes since I was 14-years-old and I started collecting classic bikes about twelve years ago, I love the history and it really puts a smile on your face when you’re riding them,” he says. Nelson club member Bevan Eyles was given the ‘Best of Show’ motorcycle trophy for his Sunbeam motorcycle and side-chair, this is the first year the trophy has been awarded.

She was unable to walk, and given the remote location and lack of phone coverage, other members of the group had activated the beacon. The helicopter’s on-board intensive care paramedic was dropped near the woman, who was assessed and stabilised before being winched onto the helicopter with the paramedic. Outdoor movies entertain masses Brittany Spencer Armed with rugs, camping chairs, torches and goodies, Nelson’s parks and gardens are filling with people eager to watch films under the stars at Nelson’s Summer Movies Al Fresco. Organiser Antony Hodgson says the films have been a hit with both locals and tourists showing up for nights of outdoor entertainment. “It’s been a really good week, we haven’t had any bad weather and, because a lot of people are now coming year after year, when you look out at the crowd you see a lot of familiar faces.” The screenings feature the Marilyn Monroe thriller Niagara, Anne of Green Gables, The Hustler, the Beatle’s musical comedy Help! and Sean Connery’s From Russia With Love. “We had some of the crowd dressed up in cocktail dress with suits, martinis, and guns for our Bond film, people have been singing along to Help! and Anne of Green Gables certainly got a lot of laughs.” Stoke’s Gladys Nalder says she went to most of last year’s outdoor movies with her grandson Jesse Todd, and this year they’re back to do the same.

Shakespeare heads outdoors After eight years of Bard-less summers, outdoor Shakespeare is returning to Nelson this month. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be brought to life by British director and producer Giles Burton, who has enlisted the talent behind the former Body in Space theatre company’s famous outdoor summer theatre productions (Earnest!, All the Fairy Tales You Know, The Three Musketeers and Around the World in 80 Days). They have also joined forces with other great local talent, emerging actors and veterans, including Dylan Hutton, who has recently returned from performing at The Globe Theatre in London with the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company.

Audiences are guaranteed an evening of hilarious comedy and romance in this story of lovers overcoming disapproving parents, fairies creating mischief and the “rude mechanicals” performing their play within a play. The team is rehearsing full-time at Fairfield House over December and January to bring the region a highquality Shakespeare performance that is accessible to everyone. 'Phone art' coming to local libraries One hundred and twenty-five little artworks make for one big community installation project in PhoneArt 2017. Dozens of old unwanted mobile phones have been turned into miniature works of art and will be on show at Nelson and Tasman libraries. School groups, art classes and individuals have all contributed to the project – with artists ranging from toddlers to seniors. PhoneArt is an Arts Council Nelson initiative, and with the help of a Creative Communities Scheme grant, the exhi-

bition will be on the move this summer. The exhibition begins at Elma Turner Library on January 4 and runs until January 25. Broadgreen Historic House will be surrounded by a range of around 40 Jaguars and numerous pieces of art work from members and other local artists

on January 15, for the club’s biennial event. “People always talk about Jaguar E Types and Ferraris as being works of art, so I though why not put them together,” says club president John Eales. “This year we’ll have everything from a SS100 Jaguar dating back to 1936/7, right through to brand new models supplied by Archibalds of Christch-

urch.” Open to all, car and art enthusiasts can peruse the different models and art with live music from ‘Kruzin' and a sausage sizzle to fundraise for a club defibrillator, from 10am-3pm this coming Sunday. John says the event proves popular each time and is perfect for people wanting to find out more about Jaguars.

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer on its way, it is time to start planning what methods to use to control argentine ants. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait. If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product. The last two seasons have seen the use of a now tried-and-proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, different products to achieve ant control. To get the best result from your X-It Ant application your sprayer must have no spray residue from the previous use of insecticides (e.g. Ripcord®Plus) Best results are achieved when a new sprayer is used and only X-IT Ant is used in it. X-It Ant works by being non-repellent to ants so that when they walk over the dried spray residue they pick up the insecticide on their feet and take it back to the nest where the ants preen each other, and thereby pass the insecticide onto other ants, including the queen. Ant colony control is achieved once the queens are dead. You must know where the ants are for successful treatment, so a full inspection of the

property is required, so check all these places: Sleepers, trees, curb and channelling, driveways, paths, gardens, compost heaps, all fences including the wire or boards, rails and posts, pergolas and plants growing on them. Firewood piles, downpipes, rubbish bins, bbq’s, outdoor furniture, pot plants, vehicles, decks and any trees overhanging the boundary. The best time to look for ants is in the heat of the day when they are most active.

Art to take over Queens Gardens Kate Russell Queens Gardens will be transformed into an art gallery this weekend, with Art Group Nelson holding their annual exhibition on Saturday. The one day only event has been running for over 30 years, and includes over 50 exhibitors selling their original work - ranging from paintings to woodwork to garden art. Local artist Jackie Bird will be one of the members showing her paintings on the day. It will be the first time she has been part of the exhibition after joining the group earlier this year. Jackie, who is a self-taught artist, recently left a career in real estate looking for a change of pace. “I gave the job away and picked up the paintbrush,” she says. She paints with oils on polished linen canvas, and says she finds inspiration in the “simple things.” “It’s the birds, the feathers and the nests. If a feather floats by, I can’t resist picking it up,” she says. Jackie says she is looking forward to showcasing her work at the gardens. “It’s just lovely having an outside venue,” she says. “The exhibition is just one of those events that all the holiday-makers and locals can enjoy.” Queens Gardens Art Exhibition, Saturday 14 January from 10am – 6pm. Lani Jackman says it would have been a wise investment for her family to buy a house at the Nelson Hockey Turf because she spent so much of her childhood there. Both her mother and grandmother played hockey and now the 26-year-old has turned her lifelong love affair with hockey into an international umpiring career. Lani recently officiated in three tests of the Black Sticks series against Malaysia, in Stratford last month. Lani has umpired 10 tests, all on New Zealand soil, and says she gets a thrill out of being part of the game she loves at the top level. “It’s always a challenge, the game is moving so fast now and there’s so much to keep an eye on, but I really loved it.” Lani started umpiring in Nelson as a 13-year-old. “I used to play, and as it was

Second time lucky for Nelson sailor Jacob Page Sailor Richard Borrell is keen to finish was he started in 2011 when it comes to the Round the North Island race on February 25. He contested the race six years ago, but only made it to Wellington before the Christchurch Earthquake struck and his sailing companion had to go and assist family caught up in the disaster. Richard believes the brief taste has made him more savvy about what to expect and with new teammate Jurrian (Yuri) Schokking, he expects to finally complete the race which tests both skill and nerve at the same time. The duo will race in a 1985-built yacht named Jet. “For us in Nelson we effectively do the race twice – you have to get the boat to Auckland and back again. “The race itself takes about three weeks and costs between $15,00 and $20,000. “It is one of the pinnacle sailing races in New Zealand, it’s also got a lot of history with it with

“We basically had a bean bag at the bottom of the stairs and we’ll likely use that system again. “You reach a stage where you become so buggered that you’ll sleep anywhere.” The duo had a practice run when they sailed the boat to Northland two weeks before Christmas, which went well. Richard is currently the Vice Commodore of Tasman Bay Cruising Club, a member of Nelson Yacht Club and committee member of the local secondary school 420 team sailing association. Yuri began sailing in Optimists and P-Class boats at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club in the 80s. As well as sailing many other dinghy classes in his youth, Yuri has recently owned an Elliott 7.4, a Farr 1020 and, most recently, a modified SR 26. Yuri is a member of the Nelson Yacht Club and also serves as a committee member on the local school 420 team sailing association. It proved to be a busy weekend for Nelson cricketers, with the Nelson Hawke Cup team travelling to Buller to earn a first innings victory while Marty Kain and Josh Clarkson played for Central Districts in the Super Smash Twenty20 final against the Wellington Firebirds, which the Stags lost despite an unbeaten half century from Josh. Nic Clark’s century for the schoolboys proved more than enough against an under-strength Waimea Toi Toi outfit which had gone unbeaten on the way to the 110-over title before Christmas. College amassed 262 for 6 with Nic gaining good support from Josh Simpson (46 not out), the pair adding 100 for the fifth wicket. The total proved more than enough as an undermanned Waimea Toi Toi side was skittled for 142. Josh continued his good match with two wickets and a run out. Nic's ton was one of three centuries in club cricket at the weekend, with Stoke-Nayland opener Kurt Pahl making 102 and Ricky Edwards

Nelson drivers on pace at national speedway events Jody Scott Keightley Teece had the best result for a South Islander for nearly a decade at the New Zealand Stock Car Championships in Kihikihi over the weekend. As well as the first event at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway for 2017, January began with several Nelson drivers competing for national honours around the country. Keightley kept his cool amongst the chaos around him, finishing fifth overall out of 170 competitors. Only five drivers made the trip across from the Mainland. Keightley was on the pace all weekend, easily qualifying in his group and leading on points with two laps to go in heat two before getting spun up amongst the carnage around him. He recovered to finish but lost valuable points.

The final race was brutal with several cars rolled. Keightley snuck through untouched but was unable to gain enough places to overhaul the points leaders. Ian Burson was at the New Zealand Super Saloon Championships in Cromwell. The 30 lap final saw 22 cars start but only 10 finish. Ian was able to avoid the spins and crashes to finish fifth overall. He now heads to the New Zealand Grand Prix in Invercargill this weekend. Shane Harwood made the final group in the New Zealand Super Stock Grand Prix in Napier in 6th overall. He still retains the 1nz number after Palmerston North was rained off last week, both he and Brett Nicholls return this Friday to continue with the final two heats of the NZ Super Stock Championship.

The Racing for the Kids “Child Cancer Foundation” meeting at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night saw Charlie Jackson win the Modified Sprint feature race. The midget feature went to Tom Lumsden from Christchurch as part of the Oxford Hotel South Island Midget Car Series. The King of the Clay titles were featured in the other classes, Gordon Ingham won the Street Stock group, Shane Brooks the Stock Cars, Dave Leitch won the productions, while it was Queen of the Clay for the TQs with Alicia MacLauchlan winning their feature race. The track now has a weeks break before the first of the two big New Zealand title meetings. The Sprint Car GP then the NZ Midget Championship will see some of the country's best drivers in Nelson.

William Tyree was 27 when he arrived in Nelson in 1882. He married a widow and adopted her son. He bought a Trafalgar St studio n 1884 taking portraits, family groups and public events. Brother Fred joined

him and specialised in travelling the province photographing scenic views. By 1895 William Tyree had established a successful photography business. He appointed Rose Frank as his trusted manager and moved to Sydney.
