After building a home together in the place they love, Noelene and Lionel Wells can’t bear to live in Monaco any more. The couple, who have lived together in their Martin St home for the last 40 years, is facing moving into a retirement home after the devastation left behind from Thursday’s storm. The combination of a relentless king tide and a major storm flooded roads, houses and led to evacuations, with Lionel saying it was the worst storm he’d ever seen in all his years at Monaco. “We’ve had a few not-too-nice storms but nothing like this. I am devastated.” Noelene says she looked out at the ocean at 9am and knew “something drastic” was going to happen. “I knew we were going to be in

Photo: Brittany Spencer. trouble, there was an enormous quantity of water and it all came in in one big ‘wompf ’. “I couldn’t believe it was happening but I had to because it was and we were right in amongst it. I had to accept it, I couldn’t do anything else.” The pair were walked and carried to Nelson Surf Life Saving Club

rescue boats and then ferried across the surf to police officers at The Honest Lawyer. The whole experience was quite an ordeal for the couple, but the worst part was yet to come. After the tide turned and the flood water subsided, Noelene and Lionel returned to their home, but nothing could have

prepared them for what they saw. The garden Noelene spent hundreds of hours on has been completely washed away, large appliances, wood and numerous items cover the property, and mud covers everything. A stark watermark sits high along the house, fence and garage. The garage door frame has been pushed out and the front gate has been thrown off its hinges. “This is heartbreaking,” Nolene says. “It is the most hideous thing that could ever happen and I’m sick of crying about it to tell you the truth.” Despite loving living in Monaco, Noelene says they can’t live there anymore. “It has all been taken away again and everything is such a mess so this time it’s curtains, we’re finished, we will go to a retirement village, we have to.”

Some secondary school’s rolls in the Nelson region are reaching record highs, with one college having to turn families away and desperate parents moving house just to get into school zones. Colleges started back last week, and this year Nayland College has seen their highest intake of year nines in more than a decade and Waimea College has reported their largest roll ever. “We have 270 year nine students joining us this year, with an overall roll increase,” says Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson. “We have 60 new students joining us at other year levels, eight new staff and an increase in international students.” Meanwhile, Waimea College is under “significant pressure”, according to principal Scott Haines, with a roll of 1614 students – up from 1575 last year, and is nine teaching spaces in deficit. “We expected our roll to peak last year so it has exceeded our own estimates. We now have 343 year nines and 370 year 10s, and eight new form classes.” They have also had to turn away 70 out-of-zone families

Photo: Kate Russell. this enrolment season, which Scott says is “unfortunate”. “I really feel for them because, obviously, if they want to come to Waimea College for whatever reason, we’d like to be able to accommodate that and it’s really hard having those conversations,” he says. But some families are going as far as moving house just to get into the college. “When we bring the zone map out and try and explain why they can’t enrol here, some families will just say ‘fine, we’ll just buy a house in the zone’. “I had a father a couple of weeks ago, who I had that exact conversation with, say ‘here’s the enrolment form for my son, I’ll be back within the week with a property document with the deed to a property’ - and that’s exactly what he did.” Garin College has also had a

jump in its roll and has seven new teachers. “Garin is experiencing positive annual roll growth with an opening roll this year of 526, up on our roll of 515 students in 2017,” says principal John Maguire. He says the most significant roll growth is occurring at year nine with 99 new students, but they are “well placed” for further increases. Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls have both reported stable rolls. Daniel says they have sufficient facilities to cope with roll growth, and believes their roll is growing due to renewed “support and confidence” from local families. “There has been an increase in students from across the region, but the biggest increase has been from our local area.”

Cyclist tests legal waters over Rocks Rd black spot Charles Anderson Paul Stephenson was riding down Rocks Rd just over a week ago when he hit a puddle of slimy silt and went flying. “As soon as I hit it I did a superman down the road.” He ended up with bruising, cuts and grazes all over his body. But he hasn’t been the only one to fall foul on Rocks Rd as a result of the puddle. The Nelson Weekly last week reported on two other cyclists who have broken bones after riding through the it. A police officer also slipped over after he went to help another cyclist who had fallen over in it. Kirsten Boswijk rode through the spot last September. She slid off her bike and broke her pelvis. Another cyclist slipped over, breaking several ribs and their shoulder. “It’s just crap,” says Paul after he learned about all the other incidents. “NZTA have had all this time to sort it out and they have done nothing.” Paul says he is considering exploring legal options and has

After last week’s storm, NZTA has also diverted cycling traffic into the puddle because the cycle path has been washed away. “I’m wondering how many people have come off and haven’t reported it,” Paul says. “I couldn’t believe how well it took me out. It’s like black ice.” He wants to know of anyone else who might be interested in taking legal action against

the agency. NZTA did put up a “slippery” sign, however, this was 150 metres away from the puddle. The agency says that the refurbishment of Rocks Rd, planned to start later this week, will help solve the problem. “Drainage works along Rocks Rd will continue as planned, as will cliff works,” says a NZTA spokesperson. “The road has been swept. The area has suffered considerable damage and we ask for people’s patience and understanding while repairs and improvement works are done.” This work will see the area concerned re-laid to new levels, improved drainage and the roadway resurfaced. The spokesperson says that the location of the warning signage is being reviewed, and if needed it will be moved. “Updates will be posted on www.nzta.govt.nz/rocks-road as we know more.” The spokesperson says, as well as Rocks Rd, cyclists can also use Waimea Rd to travel between Nelson and Richmond. NEWS New citizens celebrated: The next Nelson Citizenship ceremony will take place on Wednesday 14 February in the Trafalgar Centre at 9am. Kate Russell The idea of a proposed dog park for Nelson is “dangerous and lazy”, according to a local retired dog behaviourist. Marianne Castle is the owner of two dogs and has over 30 years experience in dog behaviour training in Nelson and overseas. She believes that the enclosed dog park idea that was proposed by local husky owner Andrew Cooke in an article in last week’s Nelson Weekly would be a bad move for Nelson. “Firstly, if you condense dogs into what is essentially a trapped situation, you will get aggression, fear and bullying,” she says. “Dog parks can be places where dogs get to practice undesirable social behaviour and develop bad etiquette. “They are a lazy option for dog owners and do not replace the need for a proper walk.” She also says that dog parks bring out problems around possession, over-stimulation and dogs getting over-excited, as well as owners getting “dog park rage” over conflicting

Dog parks really need to have ‘lifeguards’.” Marianne adds that dog parks also “smack of segregation” and the establishment of a dog-park could push dogs and their owners out of other areas. Gary Cox is looking to the future. The YMCA Nelson executive director has recently overseen an expansion into Motueka and Wellington and also bought the Nelson Training Centre as the organisation tries to increase its education network. As well as offering early childhood education and afterschool care, Gary says many people might not know about what it does for other students. “That’s partly our fault, we say that it’s our best kept secret. But we don’t want to be a secret anymore,” Gary says.

“This is a big step for us.” Gary says YMCA is focused on giving “second chance” learners another go at education. “These are students for whom school hasn’t worked. The course is ideal for young people who have left school without enough qualifications and would like another chance to work toward completing their study." YMCA offers courses for NCEA level 1, 2 and 3 which is entirely free for students as it's funded through the Tertiary Education Commission. With all the new locations, this year it is more than quadrupling the number of students it has on its books. "We keep our classes small and

The storm may have battered and bruised two iconic buildings on Nelson’s waterfront, but they won’t be shuttered so easily. Dramatic video footage of last Thursday’s storm showed the Boathouse and Boat Shed Café both at the mercy of the waves crashing over Rocks Rd. Water washed through the inside of the buildings and emerged through the front doors. “There were some pretty dramatic moments,” says Erin Palmisano, partner of Boat Shed owner Daniel Monopoli. “We are hoping her bones are still good.” The storm, which coincided with a king tide, caused chaos across the region with residents evacuated and roads closed. Most heavily affected were in Mapua, Ruby Bay and the Glen where water broke over walls and into homes. Engineers were still at the Boat Shed looking for damage, how-

ever, Erin says they are vowing to reopen. “We have every intention of being back open and running, but in terms of time frame we have no idea. But we are hopeful.” Erin says they had the whole Boat Shed team cleaning up on the day. “She is still standing. The overwhelming support from the entire community has been wonderful … everybody has been so amazing and supportive, and it means the world.” She says there is also some exciting new developments on the horizon which means there is much to look forward to. Down the road, Boathouse manager Ali Howard says the prognosis for the building is “as clear as mud” as there were so many external influences to consider – including insurance and engineers' reports. “Our aim is to get the building repaired as soon as we can. That’s our aim but we want to do it properly.” The boat ramp was washed away and floorboards lifted

up, but other than that Ali was confident the building was in good shape. About five years ago there was extensive work done on its piles and just the day before the storm it had its annual inspection, which it passed. Ali says they are working to rehouse travelling gigs who were booked into the venue. There was also a wedding reception they were meant to have hosted this weekend which has also found a new home. “That’s a full-time job to find alternative venues. We want to help everybody as much as we can.” As for Rocks Rd itself, NZTA is still assessing the scale of the damage to determine exactly what repairs will be required to restore the road and make it more resilient to future weather events. “The damage is considerable, including damage to the sea wall and the footpath,” a spokesperson says. “Until that assessment is complete it’s too early to speculate on the cost of repairs.”

Paddling with the eels Locally Owned and Operated

Judene Edgar The passion of one man sparked a nation’s interest in waka ama, when Greg Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell sailed his hand-carved, double-hulled waka from Tahiti to Okahu Bay in Auckland in 1985, without any modern navigational instruments. Today, there are 94 waka ama clubs throughout New Zealand and it is the fastest growing water sport in the country. There are five clubs across the top of the south – Maitahi Outrigger Canoe and Whakatu Marae clubs in Nelson, as well as clubs in Motueka, Takaka and Picton. Nelson’s Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club is celebrating their 10th annual waka ama race at Lake Rotoiti this weekend, and they are looking forward to a fantastic turn-out. Maitahi’s annual regatta, Tuna e hoe Ana, which literally means paddling with the eels, is the only waka ama racing event held at altitude, some 620 metres above sea level. “It’s a unique alpine experience racing at altitude,” says club president Charmaine Payn. “We have teams coming from Nelson, Golden Bay, Motueka, Marlborough, Canterbury, lower North Island, Dunedin and even the United Kingdom, to compete.” Contestants and teams of all ages and experience, from novice to Golden Masters, will compete for a range of honours. This year all participants will be especially honoured, receiving a 10th anniversary medal sponsored by Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, whose kaumatua will open the event on the Friday afternoon. “The opening is always a memorable activity for spectators and participants alike,” says Charmaine. The annual regatta has helped to strengthen the Nelson competitors from Maitahi and Whakatu Marae clubs, who continue to shine with growing national and international successes. Charmaine says that she is also amazed at the standard and number of rangitahi, or youth, competing in waka ama. “Waka ama fits in ideally with our Kiwi lifestyle, so it attracts paddlers of all ages,” she says. The event features a series of races for one-person, two-person and six-person waka ama, over 5km and 10km distances. Spectators and supporters also get a chance to have a paddle, in a fun waka ama race for the public at midday on the Saturday. Anyone interested in taking part in the fun race should meet at 11.45am at the regatta registration tent in Kerr Bay. All participants will be provided with the required equipment and safety gear as well as some basic instructions. The Tasman Harbourmaster will also be there on the day supporting water safety. Your Voice A few days ago after a very high tide, a number of residents in various places of Nelson had flooding. Prior to the upgrading of the stormwater system in Parkers Road, Tahunanui, residents at the top end of Parkers Road had flooding on a number of occasions and I also had flooding from the small creek behind my property, but after the stormwater system was up-graded in 1990-91 the flooding was not as bad. A few years later the creek behind my property was cleaned out, but despite a request by my neighbour before he moved away from the area, nothing was done. At other times I was able to move my car, but this time living on my own and having a disability, I was unable to do so, with the result

that I am now left with having to look for another car. Over recent years, Nelson City Council has spent a considerable amount of ratepayers' money on cycleways, sports facilities and promotion of other sporting events, but nothing much on regular maintenance of waterways etc. A.Smithson. ‘Black spot’ causes chaos: My daughter fell off her bike last Saturday. She rode through this exact puddle and the bike went from under her. She has bruises and cuts all over her arms and legs and was very lucky that she didn’t fall into the traffic. time of the year. Broke both hands, sprained my ankle and my head hit the road as I rolled. I would be dead if it wasn't for me wearing a helmet! I went through one of those puddles and the bike went from under me, I was lucky I fell still in cycle way and not into path of traffic! An ACC report was made and I contacted the NNC about my concerns for others. Still nothing done. Andy Wallace. ‘Nelson needs a dog park’: Totally agree. Urgh, fenced dog parks are the worst. Plenty of places to exercise dogs without having to lock out-of-control dogs in a fairly small area and expect nothing bad to happen. Plenty of dogs have been injured and killed in dog parks. They encourage people to take less interest in their dogs. Why teach your dog obedience and life skills when you can let it run wild in a fenced area?! Those who want to do agility, why not visit the Nelson dog training club website and Facebook page and come and learn how to teach and train agility skills in a safe, controlled manner! Claire Smith. Nelson Matters Four serious accidents on the Appleby Highway in the last month is a wake-up call on road safety. The problem is not just our State Highways. Constituents are contacting me reciting examples of serious crashes and near misses on Lower Queen Street, Richardson Street and many other council roads. Motorists are understandably using alternative routes to avoid highway congestion but this increases the safety risk for local communities. The national road toll was 843 in 1973 but by 2013 it had reduced

to 235. The concern is that is has grown by 50 per cent in the last three years to 380. The regional road toll in Nelson and Marlborough has followed a similar trend, dropping to just 5 in 2015 but increasing to 10 in 2016 and 14 this last year. We need both short and long term solutions. I want the NZ Transport Agency, council and police to specifically review the safety of the Appleby Highway and the black spot intersections. Warning signs, slower speed limits and more road policing need considering. We also need

to look at new turning bays and merging lanes. We also need to be investing in highway upgrades. Our population, visitor numbers and freight volumes are growing strongly. The number of vehicles in Nelson and Tasman has grown from 70,000 in 2000 to over 100,000 and is projected to grow by more than 3000 each year to 2020. The Government is reaping the revenue from this growth with over $100 million a year now being taken from Nelson and Tasman households in petrol

taxes and road user charges. We need to ensure this is reinvested and not diverted elsewhere. We know highway investments improve safety. We are getting fewer accidents on those sections recently upgraded, like the Ruby Bay and Stoke bypasses. We also need to get tougher on drugged driving. My wife, with a young child in the car, was nearly killed in an accident involving a cannabis-influenced drugged driver 15 years ago in Atawhai. The problem has got worse since. Two of Nelson’s recent fatal accidents involve

drugs. National has introduced a Bill to Parliament introducing random drug testing with tough penalties similar to drink driving. I don’t have all the answers and welcome ideas. I have written to government ministers and transport agencies highlighting these local concerns. This week I am meeting with police, council and roading engineers to learn more and to help achieve increased safety. We all need to do our bit to save lives. Advt.

This year’s Nelson Wine and Food Festival being held in the vineyards of Middle-Earth Wines is unashamedly local, according to organisers. “It’s local wines, local food, local music and local organisers putting on a local event at a great local venue,” says Richmond Rotary’s Peter Glue. Last year students from Nayland College’s economics class conducted a survey with the view to moving the event to a different venue, possibly the Richmond Showgrounds. However, Peter says that the response from attendees was a resounding ‘no’. “Don’t change, keep it local, keep it at the winery, was the overwhelming response,” says Peter. “So that’s exactly what we’re doing – keeping it local.” Set in the stunning Middle-Earth vineyards on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, Peter says that the grounds are looking great and he’s delighted that the public agree that it’s the perfect venue. The Nelson Motor Show has been going strong for several years now, thanks to the main organiser Steve Steele, who has recently begun handing over some of the reigns to the Nelson West Rotary Club. "The show keeps getting bigger and better, especially since we moved into a larger premises at Tahuna beach. It has bigger grounds, there’s running water at the camp, showers, toilets, electricity, so it’s the ideal location," says Steve. "Nelson West Rotary have

taken a bigger part in the show and any funds left over goes straight to them. We start with a zero bank balance, then we find sponsors to get it going, then, after all the expenses are paid, the proceeds go to West Rotary to share among their projects." This year’s programme will be similar to previous years because it’s been a winning formula. ‘There’s something for everyone,’ says Steve. ‘The show cars, the usual competitions, children’s activities, food and beverage stalls and the live music – which is a great favourite with the people attending. This year it's an 80’s cover band called ‘Kick’,

on both Saturday and Sunday, who have branched out and are doing quite a range of music now, good music to dance to, even a bit of rock 'n' roll.’ Entry for drivers and their vehicles is free, just not their passengers—unless they are children under 12. For everyone else it’s $10 to get in. "We’ve simplified entry into the grounds and the registering process as well, which is done on the day – it makes it a lot easier without a whole lot of administration prior to the event," says Steve. "People have described the Nelson Motor Show as ‘something completely different to any other show; it’s very relaxed, it gives more back to the public and it’s the most entertaining." The weekend’s line-up includes the popular Strong Man Competition, the Drag Race, Gizmo’s Belle Contest, heaps of spot prizes, a best tattoo contest and the famous Lawn Mower Challenge. Not to mention the ‘Super Cruize’ which leaves the Speights Ale House at 6pm (Friday, Feb 9th), so be sure to leave home at least half an hour beforehand! With so many great activities happening at one event, it’s no wonder people are flocking to the show from all over, not just locally. ‘People are coming from Wellington, Taranaki, Christchurch, the West Coast.. it’s great for Nelson tourism and the economy,’ says Steve. Although the events main manager Steve Steele is pulling back a little on the organisational side of things, his vision and dedication for the show and its people remains true. "I want it to keep getting better and better, so I’m overseeing things to make sure it

maintains its good standards." Meanwhile, Steve’s sense of fairness and equality are also important for the show’s continuing success. "For those who come along to the show, it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a car worth five hundred dollars or five hundred thousand dollars. You come to the show and everyone is treated exactly the same. There’s no advantage for people with the more expensive cars, in terms of who wins the prizes. Everybody’s equal," says Steve. On that note, the most favourite cars are chosen by the public, not the judges, and any other prizes are given out randomly so nobody can be excluded. "I think it’s really important for encouragement and to keep things completely fair," says Steve. The Nelson Motor Show takes place at the Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park on the 9th, 10th and 11th of February, rain or shine. The gates open at 9am and the entry fee is $10 for adults and free for drivers and children under 12.

excitement builds as saxton Velodrome nears completion The end is in sight for an exciting multi-million dollar Nelson-Tasman project which began in 2015. The Saxton Velodrome is a brand-new regional facility to replace the existing cycle track at Trafalgar Park, with the official opening on February 13th followed by a public opening later in February. The exact date for this is yet to be decided, but ‘we’ll get schools

and all the community involved, and have a barbeque organised and some music and so on,’ says Glenn Thorn, Reserves Officer (Assets and Projects) at Tasman District Council. The velodrome is a joint project between Tasman District Council, Nelson City Council and the Saxton Velodrome Trust, whose mission has been to build an outdoor cycle

There’s also an inner warm-up track and learn-to-ride area, as well as an underpass which leads riders under the main track. "The velodrome is virtually complete," says Glenn. "We have been rectifying a couple of defects in the surface, relatively minor areas that didn’t meet the tolerance specifica-

tion of the contract document. The line marking is scheduled in the coming days, so it will be good to get that done, so it’s pretty much complete. Other than that there’s just a couple of minor items, like drinking fountains, new padlocks on the gate, another gate to go in the underpass and a couple of bollards." Meanwhile, "the track itself just needs a bit of soiling on the outer embankment in which grass seeds couldn’t be sown due to the exceptionally dry conditions of late. There’s

also a bit of landscaping and planting required around the outside of the facility, as well as general tidying up between the velodrome and Main Road Stoke," says Glenn. "This will all happen between now and autumn." However none of these minor details will stop the show getting on the road. The Saxton Velodrome is very close to being ready for public use - it’s been a long road, and it’s had its challenges, but I’m really pleased it’s got to this point of

Primarily, the velodrome will be a public asset with people able to ride it according to their ability. "They will be able to go down and cruise around – they might not be doing 70-80 ks per hour like the young professionals, but it’s very much open to the public, and has a learn-to-ride area," says Glenn. With a couple of cycle clubs operating in the Nelson region, it’s expected that the clubs will sometimes book the velodrome for organised events, but will likely provide controlled access to the tracks to members of the public during those meets. Meanwhile, a booking system is planned for major events via the facilities’ website, "and a way of displaying that at the velodrome as well," says Glenn. ‘For example, a club may book the velodrome for three consecutive days, but the public will still be able to access the inner area at any time." Schools around the region have been indicating their interest in the ‘learn-to-ride programmes the facility will offer, and the Nelson Marlborough DHB is likely to use the flat track which will be suited to people undergoing rehabilitation. `We put in the flat track, where you can ride round and round on a flat surface.' But the velodrome is also attracting interest from outside the region with The New Zealand Sprint Team and Pursuit Team having been in contact with regards to use for training purposes. They are looking at booking the facility between the Commonwealth Games and the World Champs. "We’ve also had interest from Christchurch," says Glenn. "Riders want to come to Nelson and vice-versa. People have also contacted us from Taupo about the development process, in particular the ceilings because they are looking to redo their facility." Locally, some of the top young riders in the region who have been riding the new velodrome have told Glenn they are ‘blessed’ to have the new track, saying it compares really well with other similar tracks they have used in the South Island. As far as upkeep of the track goes, "it will be jointly funded through the two councils through our maintenance costs," says Glenn. "The upkeep is minor at the moment. It’s mostly just mowing lawns, a bit of garden to take care of, and the drinking fountain. The only upkeep of the track itself for the first twenty years would be keeping the lines repainted, so it’s relatively minor."

Proud to work on the Saxton Velodrome Just a few finishing touches and the brand-new Saxton Velodrome will be ready for the official opening on February 13th, 2018. The organising team are looking at selling sponsorship around the track, so companies can advertise on the panels. "There're around 190 spaces for panels" says Glenn. ‘The sponsorship fees will help to maintain the facility. Companies will also be able sponsor the children’s ‘learn-to-ride’ areas, or the underpass, or the track itself. We already have a bit of interest from the public with businesses wanting to put signs up at the velodrome." The Saxton Velodrome is the last

major asset to be constructed as part of the wider Saxton complex and is the final phase of a long journey for the two local councils, the business fraternity and for members of the public who are eagerly anticipating its opening this month. The official opening takes place on February 13th for invited guests, with the public opening date set to be an nou nc e d in the coming days.

Gen says the event on at Ghost Light Theatre this Thursday promises to be an unmissable celebration of naked bodies, good storytelling and, of course, women. This innovative and outrageous cabaret show is exactly what it sounds like - completely naked women reading literature aloud. “If anything, it’s a comedy show,” says Gen, its MC and

The Nelson Vintage Car Club’s annual swap meet is gearing up to be popular again this year, attracting vintage car enthusiasts and members of the public from all over the region and beyond. ‘It literally used to be a ‘swap session’ but now it’s more about selling things,’ says organiser Jim Wareing. ‘Maybe it’s antique wears such as crockery or toys, or perhaps it’s old vinyl records or sewing crafts, but the main priority is car and motorbike commercial parts. People can buy a site for fifteen dollars, and for that you get a six by six site. We hope to get around 120 stalls.’ The Nelson Vintage Car Club has been going strong since 1964 and was formed by a group of Canterbury University students. ‘One of them is still alive, is in his 90’s, and continues to attend meetings and con-

Wayne Martin The best that New Zealand has to offer in Three Quarter Midget racing (affectionately known as TQ’s) descend on the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway for the 2017/18 Walker Engineering New Zealand TQ Championship this week. Close to fifty drivers have put their names forward for the biggest event on the TQ calendar with twelve cars entered from Auckland alone. The TQ class has seen a resurgence here in Nelson over the last few seasons with numbers and quality of local machines on the rise. The championship will be spread over two nights with the qualifying heats on Friday, February 9, starting at 7pm, and the C, B and A main feature races on the Saturday starting at 6pm.

The format is a tricky one to explain, but it works great for both drivers and fans alike as your favourite driver may have a dud race but still has an outside chance of making the A main feature. The winner of this final race takes home the $2000 prize money as well as being crowned the New Zealand champion. Night One: Qualifying heats. All competitors will be split into five groups, each group will race each other for four heats accumulating points as they go. This means that every driver races against each other over that night’s racing. Heat races will be 12 laps. Night Two: Finals night. The twenty top qualifiers go straight to the A main final while the next ten qualifiers get added to the B main list. The rest race in the C main first and after the completion of that race the top four place getters transfer into

the B main race later in the programme. From the B main the four top finishing cars get to tansfer to the 30 lap A main feature race. To make things even more interesting, the top eight qualifiers from the first night’s racing get to race in a six lap dash. This race will determine which grid they will start off in the big 30 lap A main feature race. So the eighth placed car could move up to a front row grid for the big race if everything goes their way in the dash race. As mentioned before, the Nelson cars no longer make up the numbers in this fine field and a handful of locals should be able to get in the A main and be a threat for at least one of the podium spots at the end of the nights racing. The one thing that might go against them is that it’s a 30 lap final and most of the South Island cars don’t normally get

The one South Islander who could possibly be a threat would be Cantabrian Jeremy Webb who is consistently fast and has successfully spent time of late racing Midgets in Auckland over the last few months. That amount of seat time should bode well for the six time South Island champion. Possible Nelson drivers who could be at the sharp end after the dust settles are Alicia McLauchlan, Darkie Armstrong, Dylan Stone-Cuthbert, Luke Dilworth, Morgan Frost and Jayden Corkill, who have all shown that they have good pace at certain

times through this season and would love nothing better than a good result in front of a home crowd. Of course you can’t discount those from that other island up north either, as the maestro of TQ racing Duane Todd from the Hawkes Bay has no fewer than two New Zealand titles under his belt along with a 2NZ and a 3NZ to go with them. I’m sure that Duane and the current 2NZ Kaleb Currie from Auckland would want for nothing less than that 1NZ on their tail tank after the weekend’s racing. At the time of writing there are a total of 14 Nelson cars

entered along with another 14 from Christchurch, 12 from Auckland, two from the Hawkes Bay and four from Greymouth, giving us a total of forty-six. On the finals night on Saturday, February 10, the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway will also be hosting the Jacks Tyres and Performance South Island Midget championship alongside the New Zealand TQ title where the best of the best in South Island Midgets will be here to wrestle away the coveted title and try and steal the show from the TQ guys and girls. It’s a dream night for all the

A Paul Ifill hat-trick has helped Tasman United to an important 5-2 win in Sunday's ISPS Handa Premiership match against Hawke’s Bay at Saxton Field. After Tasman led two goals to nil for most of the game, an incredible five goals were scored in the final ten minutes of the match, but Tas-

man’s lead was never threatened. Tasman’s opener came in the fourth minute after a sloppy back pass from a Hawke’s Bay United player was pounced upon by Tasman striker Makksym Kowal. Tasman’s second was Paul Ifill’s first after a corner in the 28th minute was bundled in. That 2-0 score line remained until the 79th minute when Hawke’s Bay got back into the game with a goal, but that only opened the flood

gates at the other end. Two strikes from Ifill and another from Lyle Matthysen were bookended by a Hawke’s Bay penalty to blow the final score out to 5-2. Tasman coach Davor Tavich says it was an important win for his side. "It was important for the fans, important for the players, an important home win." Tasman next play Eastern Suburbs in Auckland this Sunday.

A “tough-nose defender” from the Australian basketball league signed on for the Giants’ 2018 season, it was announced today. Damon Heuir is in his second season playing for the Carins Taipans in the ANBL. The 6 foot 3 inch shooting guard played at college level in the United States and will join his assistant coach at Cairns, Jamie Pearlman, who has signed on to be head coach of the Mike Pero Nelson Giants this season. Damon has all those qualities and will complement our point guard Kyle Adnam”. Volleyballers win Australian tournament Brittany Spencer In a sea of 6000 international volleyballers, Nayland College was determined to make their mark at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. The team not only made the mark but came home with a gold medal for winning, the girls' volleyball team taking out the 16 and under First Division at the Melbourne tournament. Coach Brendan Crichton said,

“we did alright” before conceding that the win was “something quite special”. Team captain Sophie Young says in the lead up to the tournament they didn’t know if they’d stand a chance against their Australian rivals. “We didn’t have any idea what it would be like so it was a big surprise when we took out the division, and it was cool to get that medal.” Sophie says the moment the

team took the podium was surreal. “Everyone was watching and clapping. I was just so proud of the team.” After making a splash at the biggest volleyball tournament in the southern hemisphere, Sophie says they’re ready to tackle the Mainland Volleyball Championships in Christchurch later this month, and then the New Zealand Secondary School Volleyball Championships in March.

The warm water temperatures (24 degrees throughout the Bay) are not ideal but the weather forecast predicts cooler temperatures over the next week. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club and its members are in the final stages of preparations for their annual Snapper Cup which will take place on the 17th of February. Just like last year, an early start will most likely be the key to success - almost all snapper were landed before 7 am. A good burley trail, stealth, and light gear, are other main factors that will improve your chances of catching some of these shy fish. Try different baits - squid is always amongst the favourites, but also offer fish baits and, especially if the sharks are abundant, paddle crabs or prawns. Flasher rigs, stray lines and light baited slow jigs seem to work best, and some specialists also have had good success with softbaits. Fishing Hint: Snapper love current. A strong current undermines the edges of channels and drop-offs uncovering the worms, crabs and shellfish that the fish prey on. So the snapper are more active, and when they are more active they are moving, and in a feeding mode. This makes them more likely to encounter your bait, and much more likely to eat it.

Nelson rep tennis players win back Blair Cup

Nelson has wrestled back the under 18 representative Blair Cup after beating Marlborough 12 games to four over the weekend. The Talley's Nelson team travelled to Blenheim to try and win the cup back for the first time in two years. The team took charge early on, winning three out of the four doubles matches.

Nelson number one boys doubles pairs Oscar Symonds and Alex Brogan brought on their ‘A’ game, coming back from one set down to take the second and keeping their cool in the super tie break to close the door on opponents Torban Otaway and Cameron Lyons 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. The singles leg followed in the same vein, Nelson taking six of

the eight matches. Recent addition to the team, Jackson King-Powell, stood out with his big serve and effective forehand proving lethal to his opponent, Cameron Lyons, King Powell winning 6-3, 6-2. All four Nelson girls won their singles games with relative ease, putting Nelson in an uncatchable position with the mixed doubles still to play.
