A Nelson city councillor has been accused of “rorting the system” by teleconferencing into council meetings while actually being in

India studying to become yoga teacher for two months. Kate Fulton has come under fire for her decision to leave the country a few weeks into council business. All councillors received a five-week holiday that only recently ended.

Fellow councillors did not know of Kate’s intentions until very recently, when she left a workshop saying she was flying to India for two months to study yoga. At a Sport and Recreation committee meeting last week, chair Tim Skinner did not accept Kate’s

apology for being absent from the meeting. “From my perspective it was a bad precedent to set. I didn’t want it to be seen as a get out of ‘jail free card’ ... it’s rorting the system.” Councillors are able to use tel-

Dharm Patel says that he has long advocated e-cigarette use and first sold them in 2008. However, more recently he has seen the rise in their popularity. “It’s just cheaper and safer than smoking. For people who want to stop then it is really helpful,” he says. In October, the Ministry of Health said e-cigarettes could help people to quit smoking, and could be a valuable tool to achieving the ministry’s goal of New Zealand becoming smokefree by 2025. “When used as intended, e-cigarettes pose no risk of nicotine poisoning to users ... [and] release negligible levels of nicotine and other toxicants into ambient air with no identified health risks

However, many café and restaurants still treat e-cigarettes as normal smoking and ban it. Dharm says Nelson is still new to vaping but says it is no surprise to see more shops popping up

to sell them. To get a full set-up can cost anything between $30 to $200. Some people use vaping to give up smoking, others just like the taste. “We call them ‘cloud chasers’.” All Dave Smith knows is that he

feels much better than when he smoked all day. “You’re not waking up in the morning thinking ‘Christ, I need a smoke’.” His partner Diana Weinlich says it also means she is not kicking Dave out of bed to sleep on the couch due to his sleep apnoea. However, she warns that going cold turkey can be difficult. Other smokers spoken to by the Nelson Weekly however, say that e-cigarettes are a poor substitute and one even expressed scepticism that smoking cigarettes was bad for your health. The Ministry of Health says half of all long-term smokers will die from a smoking-related disease, and around 5000 people die each year in New Zealand because of smoking or second-hand smoke exposure.

Rachel says that in the Sport and Recreation committee’s case, she would have preferred that Tim let other councillors know that Kate was on the line from India, waiting to join in. “It would have been a courtesy to the committee.” She says that she makes her decisions based on circumstances of each meeting and that Kate had made a valuable

contribution to projects like the Long Term Plan and wanted her input. However, asked if Kate should have taken a leave of absence Rachel says that it’s a judgement call for each councillor. Deputy mayor Paul Matheson says the way Kate went about leaving the country “irked” him. “Kate has a habit of going AWOL. It was the midwifery, then the Green Party and then this. There is a procedure and it’s disappointing [the way she has handled it].” The Nelson Weekly emailed Kate on Friday asking about the issue but did not receive a response.

Construction on Nelson’s first multi-story special housing development in the inner city is progressing, with the majority of the apartments already sold. The Betts Corner apartments were given the green light last June as one of Nelson City Council’s special housing areas. The 17-apartment complex sits on the corner of Trafalgar Square and Nile St, which had once been used as a carpark. Chairman of Scott Syndicate Development Company, Craig Dennis, says ground works are nearing completion and people can expect to see some “real change” on the site very soon. The development will include underground car-parking, separate storage rooms and a large, green, communal, north-facing private lawn. As part of the project, Craig says they have worked with the council to close the section of Trafalgar Square between Nile St and Selwyn Place for three

Sparkling symphony under the stars Charles Anderson The scene was set at Saxton Oval on Saturday as more than 7000 people flocked to hear some of the world’s most captivating voices light up Nelson. Eager punters were queuing at the gates well before they opened, making sure they secured their preferred positions on the oval. The voices of Simon O’Neill, Anna Leese and Bic Runga were accompanied by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra well into the

evening. “It was so fantastic to see all those people in such a beautiful setting, listening to the most glorious music – it really is one of the best nights out in Nelson,” says councillor Gaile Noonan, chair of the community services committee. Conductor Hamish McKeich said it was a “magical evening”. “We could all feel the energy coming from the audience, which always helps performers to give it everything.”

Attendee Bernard Downey said the event showcased everything that was great about New Zealand, and was impressed with the fireworks display at the end too. “It was probably one of the best I have seen. It was really something.” The audience included a huge cross-section of the community, across all ages, and with some large groups with very well-organised picnics. Special guests included those from Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Blind Foundation, who were

What about the kids in Stoke? Sara Hollyman & Charles Anderson Young people in Stoke say they are crying out for something to do. Last week the Nelson Weekly reported on a council document that outlined a raft of violence at Nelson libraries. The report particularly focused on Stoke, where librarians had been assaulted. As a result, the council deployed security guards and youth workers to help diffuse the situation. “We just want something to do,” says one young person who the Nelson Weekly spoke to. “There’s nothing to do around here. We’re just bored.” Owner of Squires café Kim Hall says that the problem is nothing new and has an obvious solution. “For the 30 years since I’ve been here the kids have been asking for a skatepark. Instead, you bought them a security guard. “You’ve got all these great areas around here to put a skatepark. The area where they took out the tennis courts for instance. Right next to the police station, what trouble would they get into there?” A skatepark had been on the

However, it was voted down at the last minute after concerns that it might cause some traffic issues. Instead, council approved a $6.4 million multi-use centre that is

versial with strong support from Stoke sports and community groups, but others have questioned the site and cost. There is nothing within the new centre that is dedicated to youth. “You’ve got a council who are right outside our shop just 52 metres away from traffic lights, spending $100,000 on a traffic

island for pedestrians, but they can’t address a problem with nowhere for these youth to go,” Kim says. Stoke resident Carmon Lawson says if the council looked at the suburb it would see that it needs facilities for all sectors - youth, families and the elderly. “Then maybe some of these issues may be resolved.” Nelson City councillor Gaile Noonan says that the council was looking at what options there might be for young people in the area. “You can’t tell youth where to go. They gravitate wherever they feel comfortable.” The council report cites factors contributing to the issues as being poor design of the library and surrounds, attraction of the free Wi-Fi and shelter, and the lack of suitable alternative youth facilities in the Stoke area. Youth worker Liam Doherty, who has been at the library for the past two weeks, says the young people really need a skatepark. “Or at Greenmeadows. They need somewhere where they can be themselves and be young people. Once they have that input they can start to take a bit of responsibility.”

Teen crashes stolen car in Stoke Staff reporters A 15-year-old female was arrested on Friday afternoon after she crashed a car that she allegedly stole from Marsden Cemetery while on community service. Sergeant Carwyn Blackmore of Nelson Police said the teenager crashed the car at the corner of Main Rd Stoke and Saxton Rd at 12:55pm. "She was then taken into custody," he said. A woman, who was at Marsden Cemetery soon after the incident occurred, said that the alleged offender was on community service when she assaulted a woman and stole a car. The driver then lost control at the roundabout and crashed. Police arrived soon after arresting the woman. Nests containing up to 1000 wasps each are being found in Nelson homes, say two local pest controllers. Shane Warland from Flybusters Anti Ants has responded to around 200 callouts this year so far for wasp problems alone. “I went to one property in Richmond and removed 15 Asian wasp nests from the gutters and a German

wasp nest from the retaining wall. Then I went next door and got 12 more nests from there.” The giant German wasp nest is made of bark and wasp spit, says Shane, but feels light to hold. He said he also responded to a Brook St home recently where a man simply walked down the steps, which was unknowingly home to a wasp nest, and was stung 6 times. “They can be danger-

ous, especially when you come across them unexpectedly or if you are allergic.” Graeme Richards of Fifeshire Pest Control says that we haven’t even hit the peak of the season yet and, while there has been a focus on wasp control in native bush around the region, it hasn’t slowed the number of wasps in urban areas. According to Shane, New Zealand has one of the highest densities of common and

German wasps in the world. “It’s all the beech trees, they provide a good food source and with the weather patterns, the rain and the warmth, all bugs are booming,” he says. “If you get an Asian wasp nest, they might have 50 wasps hanging around protecting the place and a can of fly spray may do the trick, but if you get a German nest, they can have 1000 in there and then you’re in trouble”.

More Maori Wardens needed Kate Russell Reporter

They give up their time to keep Nelson’s streets and events safer, but more people are needed to come on duty and “suss it out” as a Maori Warden. Coordinator Harvey Ruru says they currently have 20 wardens - 13 of whom are dedicated for most duties.

But it’s not enough to cover the workload, especially with a big year of events coming up. “We would like to have 25 to 30 dedicated Maori Wardens,” Harvey says. “September 15 is when the All Blacks vs Argentina game happens at Trafalgar Park and we would like at least 25 dedicated Maori Wardens to be on duty for this event.” Maori Wardens maintain a close

relationship with the police and have many roles in the community, including discouraging crime on the streets, assisting in keeping youth and people safe, while being compassionate of those in need. They hit the streets of Nelson from Thursday to Saturday nights, working in pairs, and focusing on any areas where young people gather. They may deliver young people

home to their parents, or confiscate alcohol in the liquor ban area. On the community welfare side, the wardens support families and have opened their own homes to people needing shelter. They also support people in the courts. Services are not confined to Maori - all nationalities are helped and supported by the wardens. Harvey says they had a busy 2017 with the Masked Parade and San-

Aikido Nelson throws demonstration Sara Hollyman

Around 100 people gathered to watch Aikido Nelson show off their stuff at the Church Steps on Sunday as part of the club’s 30th anniversary. Starting with their juniors, the demonstration progressed through to teenagers, adult students and sensei, who all took turns pretending to attack a senior

club member. The afternoon ended with a sensational show of talent from visiting Sensei Aaron McConnell, who is a 5th degree black belt. The club was co-founded 30 years ago by Cornelia Baumgartner and Martin Hartman. Nelson Aikido instructor Callum Cockerell says the demonstration was aimed at encouraging more people to “give it a go”.

Theatre Royal manager moves on Sara Hollyman Theatre Royal Manager Janice Marthen has decided that it’s time to move on after nearly eight years in the job. Nelson Historic Theatre Trust Chair Mark Christensen says Janice has built the theatre up to become the busiest performing arts theatre in New Zealand, with over 300 uses each year for the past few years. "No other community comes close to that level of usage. Janice has done a tremendous job for the Theatre Royal and for the Nelson performing arts community in her time here.” Janice says it was "the hardest decision” to leave what she considers to be "the best job in Nelson” but she knows that the theatre is in great shape. It’s been an enormous privilege and honour to have led this beautiful theatre with its outstanding staff and trustees.” The Theatre Royal is the oldest purpose-built theatre in New Zealand and first opened its doors in 1878. In 2007 it underwent a $6.2million extensive refurbishment that took three years. The Theatre Royal is owned and operated by the Nelson Historic Theatre Trust and supported by the Nelson City Council.

Children start with a yellow belt and then progress through to different coloured tips to give them a sense of achievement. "Once they hit about thirteen, a lot want to jump right into adult training, so they go back to a white belt," Callum says. Gemma Percy, 10, has been practising the art for about a

year and loves it. "I enjoy meeting new people and learning new things,” she says. “It's good self-defence, too." Lochlan Cockerell, 10, got into it because “his dad does it”. "I like it because it's a lot more hands-in than karate. You get to get right in there". His brother Ethan, 8, is also part of the club. The club has many other events planned for the year.

Nelson Matters Trade policy is essential to Nelson. We export more per person than any region in New Zealand. Our export sectors earn $1200 million a year and employ over 15,000 people. National in both government and opposition has consistently backed freer trade. We championed CER with Australia in the 1980s, Singapore in the 1990s, China in the 2000s, and in the last decade the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement or TPPA. The final deal was agreed to in Tokyo on 23 January but the detailed text only became public last week.

Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly sits down with someone interesting doing something interesting. This week we head to Burger Culture to speak to Greg Lautenslager – a sports journalist, turned champion running coach, turned novelist about his story and what makes a great one.

Q: How did you manage writing the novel? A: This one, Ghosts of Gridiron, is one I got in my head. So I just did it. It took me about three years because trying to coach and write is difficult. I wrote it without my wife knowing, behind her back. Then on her birthday I gave her a present. She said she knew I was up to something.

Q: How did you get into writing? A: I grew up in Texas and went to university there and was a runner. I got a degree in journalism and ran after college and pursued my journalism career as a sports writer. I also almost qualified for the Olympics a few times but never quite made it. I lived in Oregon, Boston, and came back to Dallas and wrote for the Dallas Morning News for about 10 years. I covered everything. Everybody has a story, it’s finding the best one and telling it in the most compelling way. Q: What drew you to sports journalism? A: I love sports and I was always good at writing. From the time I was a kid I wanted to be a football player, a basketballer, baseball. Finally got to running and

Nelson artists head to Fringe Nelson‘s theatre scene is set to hit the fringes next month when a theatre troupe takes its show to both the Dunedin and New Zealand Fringe Festivals. Local troupe, Wintergreen Creative will take The Girl who Climbed a Mountain and Saved the World to the festivals which showcase works from around New Zealand and the world. Laura Irish is also taking a separate show Medea: The Mother to the Dunedin Fringe, after it pre-

mieres this Saturday at Ghost Light Theatre. Lisa Allan, of Wintergreet Creatvie, says that while she is the playwright of The Girl who Climbed a Mountain and Saved the World, the process has been very collaborative. She estimates that around 70 people have been involved in shaping the script over the last year. The idea for the show came while Lisa was touring her 2017 solo show, Rapanui- the song of stone.

She stayed a few nights in New Plymouth, under Mt Taranaki. The title for the new work came as she gazed up at the peak. When Lisa returned home to Nelson she called people from the region together to share stories of mountains and water. These stories, and the expert guidance of dramaturge, Kath Mitchell, inspired the first draft of the script which is billed as a “play for voices”. “This style of theatre is like a ra-

dio play but you get to see the storytellers and experience them live,” Lisa says. Three actors and two musicians tell the story of Kira, a young girl who can hear the voices of the Earth. Largest cruise ship visits Nelson Sara Hollyman Nelson Haven welcomed the largest cruise ship to ever visit its waters on Sunday. Crystal Symphony docked at Port Nelson at 9am, the first cruise ship to visit Nelson this summer. Weighing in at over 50,000 tonnes and 238m in length, she was given a total overhaul in November 2017. It is just bigger than the 225.6m Europa 2 in December 2016 and the 688-passenger Sirena which came in April 2017. The ship offers 28 brand-new luxury penthouses. It carries a total of 980 passengers, plus crew. Port Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says that "it’s been a difficult one for us”. "We've moved things around a couple of times but now we're on top of it." She was a welcome sight for local tourism operators, many of whom were waiting to pick up

eager passengers. "I appreciate that it's difficult for Nelson businesses not knowing when these ships are arriving, but the opportunities are definitely there for businesses,” says Dave. "These passengers are coming to Nelson for the first time, the ship's coming to Nelson for the first time.” Cruise passengers Bob and Laura Brandt, from Seattle, USA, planned to spend the day exploring Nelson City and checking out some local restaurants. Crystal Symphony is on a 14day cruise that started in Sydney and will end in Auckland. It left for Wellington at 7pm on Sunday. It costs NZ$8165 per person for one of the 461 ocean-view staterooms. Dave says the port is hoping to attract more cruise ships. "Although they are booked in two or three years in advance, so it won't be immediate."

It’s been a rocky road for the Brook Sanctuary to achieve pest-free status. In 2017 there were three drops of a total of 26.5 tonnes of brodifacoumlaced bait within its 14-km pest proof fence, along with numerous legal challenges and protests along the way. But their vision is almost complete to eradicate rodents and reintroduce native wildlife into the 690 hectare piece of land. Kate Russell speaks with trust coordinator Kat Willcocks about what has been happening at the sanctuary since the last drop on October 18, and when locals can expect to take a peek inside. How did the pest operation go? The pest removal operation went exactly as we hoped. We’ve had no signs of any rats, mice or stoats since. We now have about 300 volunteers helping with the monitoring project, which involves checking 2700 devices to make sure there are no traces of pests inside the fence. This will continue into autumn and we’ll carry out smaller scale monitoring indefinitely as part of the general management of the sanctuary. The closure has also

given us the opportunity to improve our visitor track network and its signage. When are you re-opening to the public? We hope to welcome the public back in to the sanctuary late autumn. Before then we will be running guided tours in April/May which include glow worm walks, a fence-line 4WD experience, an uplands tour and a behind-thescenes tour. It’s a great way to experience the sanctuary from a different point of view.

Will locals still be able to use the sanctuary for leisure? The sanctuary will still be a place for local people to enjoy. They will always be able to walk, run, picnic and play in the stream.

Will there be an entry charge? There will be no fixed charge to enter the sanctuary when we open to the public again. There will be a suggested donation which people can give at the entrance gates. In the future, we will follow the example of all of other large, public, fenced sanctuaries in New Zealand and begin ticketed admission – but we are still in the long process of developing this structure and are keen to involve the public in these decisions.

What is your vision? Our vision is to bring rare wildlife back, benefiting not only the birds but local children and the wider Nelson community. For this vision to become a reality we need the fence and gates to be bio-secure and we need donations, memberships or gate revenues to help fund the conservation that is going on inside the fence. We want nothing more than for all of Nelson to come and experience the sanctuary and for people to see and get excited about the colourful future that lies ahead of us.

History of song coming to Theatre Royal The Theatre Royal is delighted to host two wonderful evenings of musical theatre highlights with Musical Theatre – A History in Song, featuring numbers from the composing debut of Cole Porter to the latest Broadway sensations. Nelson graduate and musical theatre artist Yitzin Ruiz Lopez has gathered a company of like-minded performers to take you on a journey through the history of musical theatre. You will hear a mix of most iconic and well-known musical theatre songs and the director’s favourites. Yitzin has been in as many musicals as possible ever since he arrived in Nelson eight years ago, and he hopes to turn his passion into his career. This show is also his goodbye to Nelson before embarking on overseas adventures. “Musicals are the most popular form of theatre around,” he says. “While straight plays struggle to survive, musicals still play to near capacity houses on Broadway and the West End, even in this day and age of TV and online entertainment. They are also favourites of school and community groups. The 1940s are seen as the golden age of musical theatre. The most popular jazz hits of this era were originally musical theatre songs, Yitzin says. During the 1950s, the music of Broadway was the popular music of the entire western world. SportS CRICKET: Wanderers got back into winning ways today with a win over Athletic College Old Boys in the Kelvin Scoble Trophy at the Botanics. Stoke/Nayland was the only other Nelson team to win today, with Wakatu and Waimea Toi Toi United both losing to Marlborough sides in the top-of-the-south club cricket competition. Batting first, Wanderers put on close to 200 before bowling ACOB out with 50 runs still needed. For Stoke/Nayland another win just adds to its stellar season that has already seen the club lock away two titles for the summer. The team put on 132 before bowling Nelson College out for 109. At Victory Square, Wakatu lost to the Falcons from Blenheim, while WTTU lost to the Dolphins in Marlborough. TRIATHLON: After several natural disasters, the Proper Crisps Team Triathlon got underway at Rabbit Island on Sunday on a slightly altered course. Team members completed a triathlon of 250m swim, 6km bike and 2km run before tagging the next team member. It was no surprise that national triathlon champion Hayden Squance led his team to victory, Hayden recording the fastest individual time of 21 minutes 27 seconds for the triathlon. Dawn wins first pro bout Dawn Chalmers came out on top in her first professional boxing bout on Saturday. Despite having an impressive background in combat sports, with over 11 years’ experience, Dawn was still nervous ahead the bout at Hotel Motueka. She fought unbeaten Christchurch nurse, Megan

McLennan, at Hotel Motueka, in a specially erected outside marquee. The fight went the distance with Dawn coming out on top in a unanimous points decision. Although Dawn had boxed for much bigger crowds internationally, she was happy to have locals and friends in

her corner for support, including the Giants basketball team. "You want to put on a good show for all the people forking out money to come,” she said. Dawn initially wanted to be a basketball player but her height prevented her from pursuing her dream. Instead

she took up water-polo and played for the New Zealand team. With the help of coach Randall Dixon, Dawn felt confident and excited ahead of the the fight. She described Randall as the "big catalyst” in making it possible. "I couldn’t have done it without him.”

Nelson runner a NZ champ The question, as Athletics Nelson’s Craig Lautenslager surged away from his closest competitor one fourth of the way through Saturday’s New Zealand 10,000m Championships in Inglewood, was not if he would win. The question was whether he would lap the field. Lautenslager came up a few metres short. The second finisher was 397m behind – and settled for his first New Zealand track title in 29min51.97sec. Lautenslager, who graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in May and then promptly took out the New Zealand Cross Country and Half Marathon titles, stormed to the lead on a track laden with 16 male and female competitors aged 15 to 78. He went through the first kilometre in 2min46sec and only Lake City’s Michael Voss went with him. “I was trying to hit 72 (second

Suburbs re-launched and ready for new season Andrew Board Nelson Suburbs "re-launched" its club with a new look and some new faces last weekend. Suburbs are the region's top football club, with a team playing in the Mainland Premier League which features the top club teams from Christchurch. Committee member Phil Williams says the re-launch was the beginning of a concerted effort to make the club more inviting and "family-friendly". "The first part was a club rebrand and the second was to create a more social environment within the club." Suburbs has dozens of teams in the junior grades and six senior mens and womens teams. Phil says the new look was to give the club a "modern feel" while also returning it to the club's original colour of sky-

A more social match between a combined Suburbs Rovers and Seals team easily beat a visiting Wellington side 8-1. While the Mainland League team suffered a 2-1 loss to Cashmere Tech. Pete says that the restoration of the rotten and engineless hull discovered in Hokitika was a “mad but extremely interesting labour of love”. “When Elray was built back in 1967 she was the fastest boat in New Zealand and featured on the cover of Seaspray magazine that year. “What's really special is that we have the original driver, Jon Jarvie, and his wife, the daughter of the original owner Jock Appleton, coming down from Auckland to see Elray on the water.”

Hardy clinkers, classic yachts, sleek cedar kayaks, veteran jetboats and meticulous replica steamboats will all be on display at the New Zealand Antique and Classic Boatshow this weekend. Now in its 19th year, the boatshow continues to grow in the number and quality of craft presented, as well as the number of people coming to view the boats and the action on the lake. Last year, over 130 boats entered the two-day extravaganza. Organiser Pete Rainey says that after eighteen years the format will stick to the “tried and true”. “Why change when people love what we do?” he says.
