An ageing population and more orthopaedic surgeries, like hip and knee replacements, are behind the $25 million expansion

of Manuka Street Hospital, which began last month. The redevelopment will see the hospital eventually grow to 22 private rooms, with the number of surgery theatres to increase from three to four. Fifty percent of the surgeries at

Manuka St are injuries covered by ACC, with other growth areas including cosmetic surgery and various elective surgeries. The hospital sees around 2500 patients a year. Manuka Street Hospital general manager Margaret Gibbs says the

expansion has been in the pipeline since 2015. “We were running short of beds and we also know that, with an ageing population and more and more dependence on orthopaedics, we were going to need another theatre.”

The development has been spilt into two stages, the first costing between $5-6 million and due to be completed by October this year. The second stage isn’t due to start until the Nelson Tasman

Over the years, Joss Cumming has spent countless hours in the Trafalgar Centre screaming for her Giants – now the team are returning the favour and supporting her. Joss has been a regular at Mike Pero Nelson Giants’ home games for around 15 years, sitting behind the goal post, wearing a blue wig and known to give plenty of unsolicited advice to referees. After getting married in late 2015, her husband John started heading along as well, holding up a whiteboard with various slogans depending on the team the Giants were playing. Joss says she’s been a season ticket holder for years and loves supporting the team. “They’re so good. They’re our local team and you get to know them, too, over the years. They’re a good bunch of guys, they get around with the crowd.” But last May the Cummings had to put basketball to the side as John suffered a heart attack while at work. As he fell he cracked his head on the floor causing a brain bleed.

Giants repay support FROM PAGE 1 Paramedics later said if it wasn’t for a co-worker doing CPR before they got there, he probably wouldn’t have survived. John says he doesn’t remember the incident. “All I know is that I was at work and I’d come back to the warehouse from some reason and, in the process of picking up paperwork and trying to get something done, I had a minor heart attack, but I fell backwards onto the concrete floor and cracked open my head. The warehouse manager managed to keep me going until the ambulance arrived about five minutes later.” While in Wellington Hospital, between intensive care and head injury unit, Joss was bedside relaying scores and updates from the Giants games to an unconscious John. “It was one of the things we spoke about, how they were getting on, who scored the points,” says Joss. John suffered another set-back in De-

cember and now has to wear headgear to cover up a hole in his skull until a titanium plate will fill it. It’s been a tough few months for the family but with the Giants season rolling around again they were looking forward to a welcome distraction. And hearing of the tough year the Cummings endured, the Giants wanted to make sure cost wasn’t a barrier to them attending games, giving them season tickets for the 2017 season. Giant Ali Granger says it was the least they could do. “From the Giants, that’s what we try to be about. It’s not just about selling the most tickets. Giving season tickets to two people who are die-hard fans, that’s what makes the Giants special.” The Mike Pero Nelson Giants tip off the regular season on March 16 in Invercargill, the first home game is two days later on Saturday, March 18, and you can bet that sitting behind the hoop will be Joss and John, screaming as hard as they can.

Andrew Board A Nelson man was left shocked after his truck was kicked and he was abused for taking photos in a marine reserve. Jason Elvines, owner of DNA Boats, took his latest boat out for a test run on Thursday afternoon, along with man who commissioned it. The plan was to give it a sea trial and take some photos of it, using Jason’s drone camera. They left from the Nelson boat ramp, powered around to the marine reserve between The Glen and Cable Bay, says Jason. “We saw a kayaker fishing on the edge of the reserve and he waved out to us as we passed, we waved back and once we were in the reserve I started showing the owner all of the bits and pieces, and then I took out my drone and started taking photos.” He says they could hear the kayaker yelling but thought he’d just caught a big fish and was excited. Once they’d got back to Nelson, Jason was reversing his truck on the boat ramp when a man flagged him down. “He comes up to my window and says ‘man, have you seen the side of your truck, some-

Because it was on the passenger side I hadn’t seen it.” Then a friend of Jason’s, who works at Mot Nets, came over saying he saw the man yell at his truck and kick it. “My mate knew it was my truck and yelled at him ‘what the hell are you doing?’ And the guy starts getting abusive towards him, saying we were poaching. “Because he had a knife they didn’t go over but it has stopped him slashing my tyre.” With the boat on the truck, Jason pulled over and relayed the story to his customer and showed him the dents on his

truck. As he was doing that, a man in a car inched forward and started to abuse him, calling them names for poaching. Jason recognised the man as the kayaker from earlier in the day. “He was a really agro guy and I yelled at him ‘what the hell are you doing, we were out there filming, not fishing’.” Witnessing it all was an officer from the Ministry of Fisheries, who was parked next to Jason. The man had earlier complained to the officer, so he had the man’s name and phone number. Jason says he laid a complaint with police and would like to see charges laid.

Manuka St Hospital’s $25M extension FROM PAGE 1 Hospice, has relocated to a new purpose-built site in Stoke in 2019. The first stage centres around redeveloping the ward block and will include a new reception, patient and family lounge, consultation room, an ambulance bay, general store, public toilet block and, most importantly, eight new bedrooms plus four intermediate care beds. “We expecting to be opening our doors with a brand-new ward in October, 2017. We’re working on reduced income until that happens and we really do need the beds, so it’s one of those things where you’ve just got to get cracking and get it done,” says Margaret. “Right now we’re down to 13 bedrooms and it’s not nearly enough, but we’ll struggle through while we build and then we will go up to 22.” The second, and much larger, stage of the hospital expansion is expected to cost between $15-20 million and will involve demolishing one of the hospi-

The day stay area will also be redesigned and moved to the front of the hospital, while the central sterile supply will be increased and the theatre sterilisation unit and commercial kitchen will both be expanded. An inwards goods store, offices, and more consultation rooms will also be added. The hospital has yet to place a timeline on the second stage, “that is just too much crystal

ball gazing,” says Margaret. Margaret says the cost to the project is quite significant. “It’s been quite a process to get to here and there is a lot going on, but it’s such an exciting project to be a part of.” The new development was designed by Warren & Mahoney Architects and will be built by Gibbons Construction. The hospital is jointly owned by Southern Cross Hospitals Ltd and the Manuka Street Charitable Trust.

Modellers: NCC to blame for lack of progress Andrew Board Any lack of any progress on resolving the issues with the Tahunanui modellers pond lies at the feet of Nelson City Council, says president of the Nelson Society of Modellers, Nigel Gibbs. Last week Nelson Weekly reported that Nelson City councillor, and deputy chair of the sport and recreation committee Mike Rutledge, was questioning if the current funding model was appropriate, with too much of a burden put on the society. The council’s sport and recreation committee was due to discuss a staff report on the current situation at its meeting this morning. The club says it has received pledges of funds and products in kind to the value of approximately half the $600,000 target set by council, however they are unable to seek further funding until the council applies for a resource consent for the project. Nigel says the club has told

council staff on more than one occasion that the application for the resource consent is key to the clubs continued participation in the project. “The application for a resource consent is their responsibility and they are not supporting us in this,” he says. Nigel says the club has also received letters of support from the Nelson Residents Association and a number of service groups, while a poll on nelsonlive.co.nz showed overwhelming support for the retention of the pond. “What a lot of people don’t seem to realise is that the pond actually serves as a detention settling area for storm water. It allows dilution and settling of the contaminants in the storm water before they enter the back beach,” says Nigel. “Sealing the base of the pond with concrete, which would allow for easy mechanical cleaning and removal of any remaining contaminants, weed and algae has been recommended by four separate reports.”

Free car parking for Richmond businesses: Richmond Unlimited has secured free car parking at the Richmond A & P Showgrounds to help alleviate pressure on parks in the Richmond central business district while the Queen St upgrade is completed. Arrest after $30k Richmond theft: Nelson Police have arrested a 21 yearold woman for the theft of $30,000 worth of equipment from a vehicle on Tuesday, 14 February, 2017. She was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in a vehicle with two other people and a search was conducted, where police found property taken from a burglary in Hunt Street, Richmond, on 3 February, 2017. Police also arrested the two other occupants of the vehicle, one being responsible for the Hunt Street theft. The 21 year-old woman appeared in Nelson District Court yesterday, charged with theft from a vehicle, theft of petrol and possession of a knife in public.

Port's new wine bottle building Locally Owned and Operated

Port Nelson is set to officially open its brand new 13,000m2 storage facility today, which will be used to house one of our most popular exports – wine. The Patterson Logistics Centre is the first major building project of a $32 million redevelopment plan. The centre will be the Nelson logistics hub of QuayConnect, the port’s Nelson-Marlborough integrated warehousing, transport, and logistics service which was established a year ago. Transport Minister Simon Bridges was to officially open the building this afternoon, which is named after the late Nick Patterson who was on the board of Port Nelson for 20 years, serving as its chairman for 13 of those. Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne says, over its first year, QuayConnect’s primary focus has been on the wine industry. “We manage 80 per cent of the South Island’s wine exports and 90 per cent of the in-

bound dry goods.” The port will now have the capacity to store an additional 18,000 pallets and be able to increase their cartage movements by another 10 dedicated line-haul truck movements per day. QuayConnect also operates storage facilities in Blenheim and until this month had used temporary facilities at Port Nelson while the centre was being built. Martin says demand for the service “intensified” after the Kaikoura earthquake. Stage two of Port Nelson’s infrastructure development is the construction of a 9000m2 facility that will further increase capacity to 32,000 pallets. Construction of the second facility will begin in June and is due to be finished by the end of the year. Other key projects at the port include the Plant and Food Research development and the new allweather workshop facility.

I have always had mixed feeling on freedom campers. Love them, or loathe them, they love staying in our region. But striking an appropriate balance between the need to welcome visitors and mange those who misbehave has proved difficult for our city. My encounters with freedom campers have been both good and bad.

I get a bit fed-up of our busy city car parks being used as dining halls, and feel frustrated when children have been unable to use public restrooms due to hoards of campers brushing their teeth. I even heard that some female freedom campers were washing their underwear in a public drinking fountain! But, I know they are not all bad. I was in Montgomery Square the other day, when I witnessed a local man swearing and yelling at a young freedom camper for rinsing a plate under a tap.

Afterwards, a group of local guys came up to him and apologised for the man’s behaviour. They said: “Don’t worry, you’re welcome here.” I then approached two American freedom campers who had witnessed it all from their van, to see what they thought of it all. The two women raved about our city, and told me they that like many others, they were simply making the best of what facilities were available to them - respectfully. They said that while they may not

be spending money on accommodation, they were spending it at our local markets, cafes, shops and petrol stations. Not just buying “$1 loaves of bread and cheap cask wine,” like some seem to think. But, despite the good ones, I do think it’s a good idea that Nelson City Council are proposing a bylaw for next summer, which would mean that unless freedom camper’s vehicles are self-contained, they would have to stay at a motor camp. And here’s why: Despite council spending $80,000

to create three designated areas that were actually used well, the problem areas, such as Buxton and Montgomery Squares and Tahunanui Beach, have still been jam-packed. It’s not ideal. But until an appropriate bylaw is in place, freedom campers deserve to be treated with respect. They are still our guests, and we want them to have a great time here, and most importantly, be kept safe. The Freedom Camping Bylaw will be discussed at a Nelson City Council meeting on March 23.

Fresh welcome for missing artwork Kate Russell One of Nelson’s newest artworks, “Welcome Cloak” will soon be back at Saltwater Creek after a five-month hiatus – with strengthening work to cost ratepayers another $4000 to $9000. The artwork, which was installed last August at a cost of $51,000, including its installation and lighting, was paid for and commissioned by Nelson City Council. It is designed to reflect the river water below and move in the wind. It was up for less than two months before it was damaged by gusts of wind, which saw it removed in October. Although the council say they are unsure exactly how much the repairs will cost, they told Nelson Weekly that the ballpark figure for the artwork is now between $55,000 and $60,000. Chris Ward, group manager community services at the council, says that there has been a delay in getting the sculpture back up due to fish spawning season, which means that no work can be done at the site before March 15. The artist who designed it, Adi Tait, was also out of town for two months, which has postponed its reinstallation. The repairs involve adding space between each shape and tethering at the joints, combined with adding a bar at the base to minimise swing. The ends of this bar will be restrained back to poles at the bank with the bottom wire, and the cloak will also be re-anodised. Chris says that the issues that led to the artwork being taken down do not appear to be due to defective materials or workmanship. “As a result, the council is working with the artist to reinstall the artwork and will meet costs in order to ensure it performs better and that ongoing maintenance is more cost-effective,” he says.

Tourism growing: For a long time New Zealand has been trying to encourage more tourists to visit us and the benefits of this effort are now paying off. In fact, the Chief Executive of Tourism NZ is now saying that if the present growth rates continue through till 2023, the present 3.5 million overseas visitors could well approach 7 million. This is a problem many countries would love to have. Let’s hope the airport terminal upgrade growth assumptions don’t undershoot as 2023 is not that far away. Ray Wilson.

Right to Privacy: I am brassed off with the interference of my privacy with unsolicited phone calls from hearing aid merchants, land agents and the like. They just take it for granted that they have the right to intrude in my life whenever they want to. I do not think so. I do not want my dinner disturbed by their inane greedy phone calls. Then when I put the phone down there is a knock on the door by proselyting morons. If I need something I will get it and I do not need or want these greedy intrusions into my freedoms and privacy. I am curious to find out how others feel about this. Is there a legal way of stopping this invasive behaviour? spent thousands on cleaning out the pond. I monitored it's use virtually on a day-to-day basis. Over a period of about 8 weeks (Feb-March) I observed only 16 boats using it. OK, I may have missed a few, but in general terms--- it was not being used very much. After the clean out it was not too long before the algae was there again. A thought that I had was perhaps to fill it with salt water (would probably have to be pumped) and then let it flush out with "clean" sea water every series of spring tides. The algae may not grow in salt. May need to be drained occasionally, but I imagine the cost would not be that high. But at the end of the day, is it all worth it for the very few that use it? Corvettes impress car enthusiasts Locally Owned and Operated

Over 100 corvettes of all shapes and sizes made for an impressive assembly at Founders Heritage Park on Saturday. The display was part of the National Corvette Convention and featured cars from around the country, including Jim Frater and his 1979 Corvette and Craig Jaquiery and his 1968 C3 Corvette. Both are first time Corvette owners and it’s safe to say their vehicles are their pride and joy. Craig has only had his Corvette for five months after purchasing it from the previous owner in Golden Bay. “Because it’s 1968 it’s more exceptional than the rest of them, it’s the first year of manufacture for the C3s,” says Craig. “[I’ll own it] forever, I’m going to be a wrinkled old man and still driving it.” Jim, on the other hand, has been enjoying his car for the last six years after purchasing it from Indianapolis. “I’ve always wanted one, they’re an incredibly attractive car and if you look around today there

Photo: Jessie Johnston. are just some incredible cars here. But it doesn’t have to be a Corvette, the next car mightn’t be but this one certainly is and I love it,” says Jim. Jim’s Corvette is definitely a step up from his previous set of wheels. “I had a 1939 E series Morris 8 which had eight horsepower and this has got about 300,” says Jim. “I drive this probably two or three times a week, a lot of cars are kept in the garage, I can’t see the point in doing that.” The convention was organised by Top of the South Corvettes

and was a great opportunity for those not so fortunate as to own their own, to admire Corvettes as old as 1958 to as late as last year. “I think you get a lot of satisfaction from seeing people admire your car. If I park on Trafalgar St I see people taking photos sometimes. I’ve been in Queenstown and had some people cross the road and block the traffic so they could take a picture of it. It’s pretty cool if it entertains somebody else and gives them a bit of pleasure,” says Jim.

Skatepark tour gets its belated finale Brittany Spencer Skateboarders, scooter riders and BMXers covered Neale Park on Sunday for the final of the 2017 Tasman Skatepark Tour, and among the competitors were brothers Hamuera and Tamati Topia-Pene. The young BMX duo from Stoke have only been riding for a few months after receiving bikes from their parents at Christmas, but already they’re turning heads with big brother Hamuera taking out the Junior BMX category. Hamuera, 10, loves getting out

on his BMX and has just learnt to jump the spine. “I wanted to do it so I gave it a go and got it the first time, so I pulled it out in the final.” Hamuera and his little brother Tamati, 7, have been to every part of the tour except the Takaka event. Mother Danell Topia says the boys are out at the skatepark before and after school and every weekend. “They both wanted new bikes and were keen to do BMX, so it was an obvious Christmas present and they’ve really picked it up really fast. They’ve got no fear.

If one's had a bit of a slam they always get straight back up and try again, because that’s what their dad has taught them.” Nikita Turu took out the junior scooter title while Alex Moreu claimed junior skate with some big air and a Superman. Ryan McHugh, Reggie McDonald, and Tom Banett claimed the senior scooter, skate and BMX categories respectively. Meanwhile, veterans Blake Eden, Ben Short, and Ryan Dando turned up the heat, entertaining the crowd with technical and gravity-defying tricks to win them the open scooter, skate and BMX titles. The skatepark tour's final two events, at Richmond on Saturday, and Nelson on Sunday, were postponed due to bad weather last month. The tour also has events in Takaka, Motueka, Tapawera, Brightwater and Mapua. With up to 54 competitors at each venue, skatepark tour organiser Haidee van Zoelen says the tour was a "colossal" success".

Kindy gets garden makeover Locally Owned and Operated

Wholesale Landscapes have taken the phrase, ‘prices so good we’re practically giving it away,’ to the extreme, literally giving away tonnes of free product to individuals and groups within the community. A fortnight ago, Nelson Weekly featured an article on the Stoke-based firm who decided to make the community’s gardening and landscaping wishes come true. Looking to help people in need or those who deserve a good deed, the firm invited people to post their wishes on the Wholesale Landscapes' Facebook page, before granting some of the best wishes and giving away discounts and freebies to the rest. Nelson South Kindergarten was one of the recipients, receiving a year’s supply of growing media, starting with a whole trailer load of compost for their school and community vegetable garden beds. Teacher and coordinator of the kindergarten’s environmental schools programme, Anthea Kershaw, says she was absolutely blown away by Wholesale Landscapes’ offer. “I just saw it in the local paper and brought the article to kindergarten, and another teacher who does Facebook put up our wish and within an hour we had a response,” says Anthea. “It’s absolutely amazing what these guys are doing, we appreciate it so much, it's like a gift because our

gardens need replenishing, we don’t have a lot of money, we make our own compost and worm weed, but we just can’t afford anything like this.” Wholesale Landscapes' team member Tom Filmer says they’ve been giving away their whole range of products including composts, bark, shells and stones. “There’s been a fair number of wishes flooding in so I think we’ll probably continue it until the end of the month and then leave it at that, it has been quite an impressive response. “We’ve had a lot of individuals from the community come to us, and another big project we’re undertaking is redoing gardens at the hospital.” Tom says it has been very rewarding going around and gifting the product to the community. “It’s great to actually see it all in action, organisations and people like these coming to us and being able to give back to the community and seeing it actually implemented is a great thing.” Tom says that people without a Facebook account can still make a wish by coming to see the team, down the drive at 55 Saxton Road in Stoke.
