The storm – which has already caused havoc in the Pacific - is expected to bring gale force winds, heavy rain and storm surges to the Top of the South from this morning. MetService have issued a heavy rain warning for the 12 hours from 9am to 9pm Tuesday, and a strong wind warning from 3pm Tuesday until 10pm Wednesday. Rocks Rd will be closed from 10am today as a precaution and Nelson City Council-owned parks and reserves will also be closed from 10am. Nelson City Council has deployed security guards and youth workers to Stoke Library after a damning report highlighted repeated incidents of assault and abuse, including people using needles to
fire ‘blow darts’ at passers-by. The report on security incidents at all three Nelson City Council libraries was presented to council’s audit risk and finance subcommittee last Tuesday after an independent security risk assessment survey was carried out last

Some staff were referred to workplace support for counselling and were temporarily taken off the roster at Stoke Library. Although the security guard is said to have been reassuring for
staff, the report says it is not seen as a long term solution. Gaile says, before the report’s release youth workers were also asked to come and monitor the situation at Stoke Library. “At least we have caught it and we are doing something about it,” she says. Youth worker Liam Doherty has
been at the Stoke Library all last week and will spend the next five weeks there. “It’s all about building relationships and doing positive things.” Liam says his impression is that many of the incidents are due to boredom. “I don’t know if you have looked around Stoke recently – there is not a lot for them to do. They need their own space where they can be loud and themselves.” He says there is a group of 10 – 15 young people who go to the library every day. “It’s fine youth workers coming down but really something needs to happen long term. They only come here because there are seats and WiFi.” A more detailed report will go to the community services committee, outlining actions as to how issues with youth will be addressed.

The suburb of Monaco, which was hit hard by storm surge during ex-Cyclone Fehi on 1 February, has been busy preparing for Gita - and with some shops selling out of sandbags, homeowners are resorting to using bags of compost to protect their properties. Cindy Holden’s Monaco home was badly damaged when Fehi hit. “This house has never flooded before, the same carpet has been down since the 1980s,” she says. Cindy’s entire basement area was flooded, including the living area, bedroom, laundry and their garage. Two cars, a motorcycle and bikes were also destroyed. She says the support from Nelson City Council had been “disappointing” and some of her neighbours were forced to purchase polythene bags and fill them with sand themselves. “We decided to use compost, if it gets washed away, it’ll be good for the ocean. If it doesn’t, we’ll use it in the garden.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has apologised to all Nelsonians who have crashed after riding through a blackspot on Rocks Rd. For the past few weeks the Nelson Weekly has highlighted the issue, speaking to various cyclists who have crashed after hitting the puddle of sludge and silt. Last week the newspaper reported that a 14-year-old girl came away with serious cuts and grazes after riding through it. Three other cyclists have also broken bones with one considering legal action. A police officer also slipped over after he went to help another cyclist who had fallen over in it. All said there was inadequate signage and it was lucky that they had not been killed by falling into traffic. “The transport agency apologises to anyone who has had a cycle crash on this area of highway,” said Frank Porter, NZTA system manager. NEWS Nelson teacher wins award: Nelson College for Girls science teacher, Sarah Johns, has been recognised with one of the country’s most prestigious science awards. Jacinda Arden presented Sarah with the Prime Minister’s Science Teacher Prize at a ceremony in Wellington last Tuesday. Sarah picked up the $150,000 honour for what the judges described as “100 per cent commitment” to her students and an uncompromising approach to bringing out the best in them. In the nine years that Johns has been teaching at the college, student involvement in science and technology projects had increased steadily, with around 70 students now taking part in a regional fair each year. Musical theatre comp launched: Nelsonians with a love of musical theatre are encouraged to enter the city’s first-ever competition devoted to the art form. It is open to everyone aged 8 and over. Prizes range from tuition scholarships with local performing arts institutions, to ticket packages which will allow the winners to attend almost every local show in Nelson this year for free. The total amount of prizes on offer exceeds $2000. To enter, people need to pick one song from the musical theatre genre, and perform it on the night. Two year 13 Nayland College students had the “ultimate” earth and marine science lesson earlier this month – even though they technically bunked the class. William King and Daymon Nuhaj were sitting in class on February 1 when teacher Graeme Bloomfield got a call to say that his Monaco property was flooding during the storm surge that hit the region that day. Graeme left the class in a panic, only to be surprised by the two boys not long afterwards, eager to help.
“It started off with curiosity, and then we saw how serious it was. When Mr Bloomfield saw we were there, he just said ‘well, you’re here now’,” says Daymon. After finding Mr Bloomfield’s house safe, they moved down the road only to find another Nayland College teacher, Nigel Lineham, in his garage, hip-deep in water. The boys flew into action, stopping items from floating away – including paintings, wheelbarrows, kayacks, dinghies - even his cat. “I forgot to save your plastic plates though, sorry Mr Lineham,” laughs Daymon. They also went around other houses turning off people’s

A unique blend of hip hop and Latin dance styles, the group of women wowed the crowds with their non-stop, high-energy combination of dance and fitness routines. “They were so great and lots of fun to watch,” says attendee Jill Ewing. Donna Burnett and Barb Thomas were at the festi-

our caravan out and camp overnight.” Peter says that 45 motorhomes camped on-site for the weekend and around 50 people took advantage of Middle-Earth Wines' proximity to the Great Taste Trail and cycled out. “What amazes us, as organisers, is the way we have no security issues, and after the crowds have left there is barely a piece of paper to pick up,” he says. “All-in-all, it's a really wonderful way to raise funds for our community.”

Rodney Holdaway always thought it strange when Elise Doyer would come in to buy a stack of coffee gift cards. Then he would notice as random people would come in over the course of several days using those exact same cards. Turns out that Elise was buy-
ing the cards just to give away to strangers on the street. “I believe in trying to share a bit of happiness and a bit of positivity, I’ve been doing it most of my life,” she says. So what better way for Rodney and Elise to help out than on Random Act of Kindness Day? On Saturday, Rodney armed Elise with a free stack of the cards, along with some goodies from the café, to give out.
“It’s so easy to fall into thinking negatively about this and that, what hasn’t been done and that has an energy of itself,” Elise says. “There are so many things in the world that you can’t do anything about but if you let that overwhelm you fall into a pit of despondency. The only thing we can control is our own actions and if we try and make those positive then that influences the world
around us.” Elise says she mostly gets surprise from her acts of kindness, but sometimes delight. Others get suspicious, waiting for the sales hook. But there is none of that. Elise is just doing it because she can. And also it has a positive effect on her
too. “I wouldn’t do it if it didn’t make me feel good.” She hoped her small action might inspire other Nelsonians to get out next year to bestow some kindness of their own. “Because we all need a little bit of that.”

Food Bank stalwart steps down Charles Anderson Editor

Mike Johnston was just looking for something to do. He had just retired from a lifetime of coal mining and farming and didn’t like being idle. Mike, now 85, had gone out to Founders Park each day but didn’t find it very stimulating. He would water the garden or pick up books. But then he saw an article in the newspaper about the Nelson Community Foodbank, which has been delivering food parcels to families and individuals experiencing hardship in the Nelson area for more than 20 years. Mike rang the phone number and started a few days later. He wasn’t there very long before the present coordinator thought he would be a suitable chairperson for the committee. “That was a bit of a shock. That was the start of it.” Then the coordinator left so Mike ended up as the coordinator and chairperson for a time. “We are not about judging about who gets a parcel. "It is just there to pack parcels and deliver them. But we see those re-

ally in need.” Sometimes when he has delivered food to families they have come out with tears in their eyes. Sometimes there will be people who just want to talk. “It can be very special.” For years Mike would go to Countdown on the weekend
shopping for the Food Bank with his wife. She enjoyed that too, he says. “You meet people in Countdown. They see a trolley full of spaghetti and Weetbix and they get curious. "Over the years I picked up quite a few volunteers that way.”
Some days he packed his van full to the brim with food and drove 45km across Nelson delivering it. “I’m not in a position to judge but they keep telling us how many people are out there who are short of food. The demand is there." But he says the work wasn’t just about the parcels.
“Sort of, in a way I needed it too. I get a lot of satisfaction out it.” It gave him a good purpose in his retirement. He wasn't one for putting his feet up and relaxing. Mike says he would much rather be of some use to society and people who need him. However, Mike does not give himself much credit for all the work he has put in to ensuring that the food bank ran smoothly. He prefers to refer to it as a job that just needed to be done and he had the time to do it. But now, he says, it just feels like he is “retiring from being retired”. Mike says he enjoyed his time with the organisation and meeting people from all walks of life. He is looking forward to having a bit more time for himself and his family. Mike says it's now time for the new coordinator to make the job their own and he is sure they will do great work. He has started target shooting at Saxton Stadium and proudly displays his latest efforts. ROOFING GAMES: Keiran Darling of Freeman Roofing in Nelson pitted his skills against fellow roofers in the inaugural Roofing Games last Tuesday. The games kicked off simultaneously at Freeman Roofing in Stoke and Roofing Industries in Whangarei last Tuesday in a bid to find New Zealand’s top roofer. Employees and contractors from around the region competed on a building-site simulation at either a ‘skilled’ or ‘intermediate’ level. Fitness for seniors Age Concerns’ latest initiative, ‘The Summer Activity Programme’ kicked off yesterday with an aim to get seniors active while providing a social element. The programme, which is now in its second year, consists of 19 different events that will run until 30 March. All events are free, as they are funded by the organization with the support of both local councils. After pulling in a whopping 10kg snapper, Kevin Bannan knew he had a good chance of winning the Big Blue Dive and Fish Snapper Cup for 2018. “I thought ‘what are the chances of catching a fish like that on competition day?’ It almost never happens.” The fish officially weighed in at 10.62kg, more than twice the weight of the second-placed snapper caught by Matthew Jobe. Kevin says he knew it was a big fish as soon as he hooked it. “It
had the weight and the power and it took off like a rocket. It’s definitely up there as one of the biggest I’ve caught. Not the biggest, but up there.” The Snapper Cup was held on Sunday after it was postponed from Saturday due to weather. More than 100 people entered with about 60 per cent catching a fish. Dawnbreakers Fishing Club vice-president Chris Jobe says it was a challenging day on the water. “Sharks were the order of the
first two hours, after which those who persevered and were in the right spot started to catch snapper. Some boats had no luck at all but were given the incentive of being at prizegiving with a spot prize of a Lowrance Fish Finder from Fluid Electronics up for grabs.” Tracey Meek won the prize for being closest to the average snapper weight (2.268kg), while Ollie Meek won the junior class with a 5.2kg snapper.

Family is at the heart of Bill’s life and social views. He was the primary caregiver for his and Mary’s youngest child long before it was trendy. I am in awe that he has given 25 years to public life in tough ministerial roles while also successfully raising six children. Bill’s wife Mary gave him a far broader perspective of New Zealand’s changing ethnicity. Her large family of 13 children came from Samoa to Wellington with little but an aspiration for a better life. Her work as a GP helped keep Bill connected with the front line of our social ser-

Election 2017 will go down as an odd result with Bill Eng-
lish securing many more votes and seats for National than any other party. Bill English accepted the unusual outcome with good grace. Winston Peters responded to Bill’s retirement with spite and venom. This contrast speaks volumes about their different characters. National faces the choice of who to lead for the next decade. Nelson Matters Bill English’s decision to call it a day on politics is a loss for National and New Zealand. I rate him as the most effective Parliamentarian of my generation. He represents the best of Kiwi values. His farming roots kept him grounded. His years at University and Treasury developed his sharp intellect. He respected hard work. He consistently reminded officials: “it’s taxpayers money, not the Government’s money”. His experience as both a previous Health and Finance Minister ensured he balanced the need to grow the economy with improving public services.

John Sharlands was a well-liked Nelson personality but most didn’t known anything about the vast array of rare items gleaned from a lifetime of collecting. Hamish Blanch knew his cousin liked to collect. John Sharland was always at the Nelson markets or antique stores sniffing out something rare. “He enjoyed the process of the acquisition,” says Hamish. “He enjoyed hunting stuff out and the interaction with whoever was selling it. He was really wellliked.” But Hamish had not stepped foot inside John’s house, on the banks of the Maitai, for more than 20 years. Last October, Hamish, who had been overseas, went over to check on John. He saw that something wasn’t right. The door had been opened. John, who had been sick for some time, had died and emergency services had been called. But what Hamish saw inside that house amazed him. Plastic bags filled every room from floor to ceiling. There was no space anywhere.

When the house was filled up John had resorted to piling up his collections under tarpaulins outside. “Even as a young person he was picking up bits and pieces,” Hamish says. “But I didn’t realise it had gotten quite this epic.” Hamish knew John had good taste, so instead of bringing in the skips to get rid of a lifetime of stuff he called in Tim Gladstone and Lipscome Auction House to
help sort through it. It took them six weeks to get through it. But it was worth it. Amid the junk were some of the rarest items Tim had ever seen. “It is probably the most amazing collection I have seen in all my years,” he says. “We will never see anything like this. The calibre and breadth and quality of collecting. The scope is huge.” Cameras, binoculars, military,

tools, magic lanterns and car badges all now fill Lipscome Auction House. “He was a collector, wasn’t he,” says owner Warwick Savage. He had to lease another premises just to house all the items while they worked through them. “You couldn’t chuck anything away because you don’t know what was in it.” Included in that were 1000 Fun-Ho! Toys, one of which he
paid $450 for it. Fun Ho! was a Taranaki-based company which built toys that are now highly collectible. Representatives of the Fun Ho! Museum are coming to attend the auction. It is likely one of the largest private collections in the country. “The whole house had to be painstakingly gone through,” says Warwick. “In my time in the industry I’ve never even heard of a collection like this, let alone seen one. It is definitely unique.” John worked at the Nelson Car factory – for about 30 years until it closed down. When that closed he went to Sealord and worked as night cleaner. Outside the house were also various cars. Hidden in a corner was also the frame of a Ford Model A. Warwick says he would love the people to come down and see it, even if they didn’t plan on buying anything. “This is a life-long collection. It’s very unusual and very special. This is John’s life spread out here.” The auction is open for viewings at Lipscomes Auction House on New St from today until Saturday when the auction will begin at 9am.

Rocks Road update The NZ Transport Agency has determined the damage caused by the recent storm event was not as bad as first thought. Crews are completing work on the cliff face and started the planned road reconstruction work last week. This work will now include footpath and seawall repairs. The 30km/hour temporary speed limit along Rocks Road will stay in place until approximately the end of March, so please be patient. Cyclists will need to merge with traffic through the work site, so please be very careful when travelling through this area. For update updates please head to NZTA's project website.

Nelson’s much-loved Heritage Week has been rebranded as the Nelson Heritage Festival. The Festival will run from 9 to 29 April 2018. The revamped event will revolve around community involvement. Revamped Heritage Festival will celebrate Nelson's past
The car park around the Trafalgar Centre is a popular place for city workers to park for free for the day. However, occasionally the car park needs to close to the public for the safe set up of an event, or to reserve the car park for people coming to an event. This is part of the hire arrangement. At these times you can consider parking in Wakatu Car Park where there is no time limit in place and your first hour of parking is free. Free all day parking is also available in four handy locations around the city if you register a carpool with Nelson City Council.
You just need to have a minimum of two people and two vehicles in your carpool and you must work in the central city. You can get all the information you need and even sign up online at nelson.govt.nz (search = carpooling). Once you are registered you can park for free all day (on a first come, first served basis) at one of the four parking locations: Haven Road by ANZAC Park, Harley Street, off Bridge Street, Kerr Street, by Smiths City and by the old Hunting and Fishing building on Achilles Avenue. nelson.govt.nz

Saxton Velodrome opens
More than 100 people rode to work via the free breakfast station in the 1903 Square on Go By Bike Day.
Tasman District Council Mayor Richard Kempthorne and Nelson City Council Sport and Recreation Chair Tim Skinner had the first ride at the official opening of the Saxton Velodrome on Tuesday 13 February, though their official track record didn’t last long!
Go By Bike Day has been an annual event in Nelson for more than 10 years – the last four years at the 1903 Square. This year free breakfasts and coffees were given out to hungry cyclists, and many riders left with new lights and armbands so they are set to keep riding into the winter months. Entertainment was provided by the Plinkers ukulele group.
The velodrome is a joint project between Tasman District Council, Nelson City Council and the Saxton Velodrome Trust to build an outdoor cycle velodrome at Saxton Field. This is a new regional facility to replace the existing track at Trafalgar Park. With a 333m-long sealed competition track and a learnto-ride area, the velodrome is for all ages and abilities to enjoy.

New citizen ‘honoured’ to become a Kiwi

Nency Gandhi is one of New Zealand’s newest citizens after Nelson’s ceremony at the Trafalgar Centre on Wednesday 14 February. Nency moved to New Zealand from the city of Navsari in India, nearly seven years ago with her husband, Ankur, who fell in love with the Kiwi lifestyle and natural landscapes, when he studied at the University of Auckland. The couple live in Nelson, with their two-year-old daughter Brianna. “We just decided it’s a beautiful place and we came to Nelson, it’s an amazing, sunny town,” says Nency. ANNA LEESE Anna Leese studied at University of Otago, and has been the recipient of many awards and prizes, as well as representing New Zealand in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Her performance highlights include Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with Bernard Haitink, an all-Mozart programme with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Sir Roger Norrington at BBC Proms, performances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Wigmore Hall, with New Zealand Symphony and Auckland Philharmonia orchestras. In 2016 she sang the role of Mary/Luck in a new work by Ross Harris (libretto by Vincent O’Sullivan), Brass Poppies, for the New Zealand and Auckland Arts Festivals. Anna’s recordings include Elgar’s The Apostles, a recital disc with Graham Johnson, and Haydn’s Italian Love Songs.
SIMON O’NEILL Internationally acclaimed tenor, Simon O’Neill ONZM returns to Opera in the Park, marking ten years since his first performance. After a busy 2017, with appearances at the Berlin, Bayerische and Hamburg Staatsoper, Carnegie Hall, the Barbican Centre, the Edinburgh International Festival and BBC Proms; Simon returns to Nelson directly from the debut concerts of his signature role of Siegmund in Die Walküre with the New York Philharmonic. His 2018 appearances include: the Berlin Staatsoper, Berlin Staatskapelle, the Dallas Symphony, Halle Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony, New Zealand Opera in Christchurch for Tosca and a countrywide tour with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
BIC RUNGA Bic Runga ONZM needs little introduction. Since the release of her first single ‘Drive’ in 1996, a top ten hit when she was just 20, Bic has been awarded almost every musical honour in New Zealand, including the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll song writing award and more Tuis (NZ Music Awards) than any other individual. Regarded as one of the most iconic albums in New Zealand history, Drive secured the New Zealand Music Award for Album of the Year in 1998, after going platinum seven times. Late last year Bic toured the country to mark the 20th anniversary of Drive.
NEW ZEALAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Established in 1947, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s oldest national symphony orchestras and one of only a few in the world that tour throughout the year. NZSO’s reputation for artistic excellence attracts many of the world’s leading conductors and soloists. In its touring programmes each year the NZSO can perform more than 100 concerts in more than 30 different communities across New Zealand to audiences in excess of 100,000 people. Many more enjoy the Orchestra’s performances through RNZ Concert broadcasts, film soundtracks – including instalments in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series – and CD recordings. Hamish McKeich has forged an impressive international conducting career alongside a passionate loyalty for developing the repertoire of contemporary and experimental music. In 2002 he established a partnership with NZSO and is currently their Associate Conductor. Working regularly in Europe and with all the major orchestras in New Zealand and Australia, McKeich has given over 100 world premieres of new works. He is also chief conductor of the contemporary ensemble Stroma. McKeich studied conducting with Professor Ilya Musin and Valery Gergiev. In 2012 he was awarded a Douglas Lilburn Trust citation for services to New Zealand music.
Pete Rainey MNZM has been musical director of Opera in the Park since its inception in 1999. He has conducted the Nelson Civic Choir, the Nelson Male Voice Choir and was the founding director of the National Male Choir of New Zealand. Pete is co-director of the nationwide high school music competition Smokefree Rockquest, and plays violin in the gypsy swing band Django Schmango.

Song to the Moon comes from Antonín Dvorák’s opera, Rusalka. This particular aria is sung by the title character Rusalka, the daughter of a water goblin, who wants nothing more than to be human after she falls in love with a hunter/prince who frequents the lake in which she lives. Rusalka sings this song asking the moon to reveal her love to the Prince.
The title of this aria translates to Oh, My Gracious Evening Star. Wolfram is in love with Elizabeth, but so is Tannhäuser. One evening, Wolfram has a premonition of Elizabeth’s death and prays to the evening star to guide her to heaven.
Be My Love is a popular song with lyrics by Sammy Cahn and music by Nicholas Brodszky. Published in 1950, it was written for Mario Lanza. His recording of the song sold over two million copies.
Anaglypta vocalist Angel Pearson and acoustic guitarist Shane Clayton span many styles and musical genres with a song list that includes popular and classic hits, blues, jazz and anything else that grabs their attention. They’re joined by Simon Williams, bringing the velvety tone of his saxophone to add even more texture and colour to Anaglypta.

This is a new regional facility to replace the existing track at Trafalgar Park. The Nelson Regional Sewerage Business Unit treats wastewater from Tahunanui, Stoke, Richmond, Mapua, Brightwater and Wakefield, at the Bell Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. Their application is for the consents required to continue discharging odours to air and discharging up to 25,000 cubic metres per day of treated wastewater to the Waimea Inlet on outgoing tides, and other associated activities. Don’t start building without a consent When this happens, it can cause significant issues for the builder and the property owner, as any work completed before the issue of a building consent cannot be covered by that consent, and must either be removed or a certificate of acceptance applied for the works completed. A certificate of acceptance may exclude work that cannot be inspected or established as complying with the building code. Our Building Inspectors have also had situations where consented plans are not held onsite. If there are no plans on site, Licenced Building Practitioners need to check if a building consent has, in fact, been issued. Most contractors still refer to paper copies,
and need to be working from a stamped, consented set of drawings. Building Inspectors also need to see the consented documentation when they come to inspect the site. “Everyone involved – Licenced Building Practitioner, engineer and owner – needs to make sure that the consent has been issued, and consented plans are held on site,” says Clare Barton, Group Manager Strategy and Environment. “Failing to have an issued building consent before you start work can lead to difficulties with issuing code compliance certificate, and in worst case scenarios there may be fines issued.”

An iconic Nelson venue that has been helping local musicians for years is now on the receiving end of goodwill. Musicians from around the region are banding together to hold a concert to raise money for The Boathouse, which suffered extensive water damage during the storm surge on 1 February. To be held at The Playhouse on Sunday, 18 March, all proceeds will go towards helping with the rebuild. Local musician Trudi Wilson, who is currently organising the event from overseas, says she cried when she saw video footage of water coming through the floor of the 112-year-old building. “I’ve played there many times myself and they have supported my friends and their bands on that floor. I have heard my high heels click on that floor, danced on that floor and it really struck me as to how important it is to Nelson.” She says the all-day concert will be a familyfriendly affair, with music kicking off at 1pm. Steve Mitchell and Friends, The Boogie Train, Urban, Lemongrass, The Gypsy Pickers, Ruby, Lilith, Cover Me, Medicine Woman, Kramit and Tillerman have offered their musical talents to the cause. “So many people put their hands up to perform, but to keep in check I had to go through and choose the acts that had either lost gigs because of the damage or the bands that have had outstanding shows there,” Trudi says. The Playhouse have offered their venue for the event, Event Audio have offered their PA services and musical gear, Robbie Sissons has offered to do sound and Christine Olsen from

Bandaids has put her hand up to do the ticketing. “The idea behind this is that while we know The Boathouse has insurance, it doesn’t cover everything. The owners and staff have always been incredibly good to local acts and hopefully we can raise some money to help get it back

Six weeks can be a long time to have the kids at home, but like every year, mum has done a great job in keeping the youngsters entertained and in hindsight we did have a lot of fun. Going camping is still one of their favourite pastimes. Just park up somewhere near the beach, get the caravan set up and cut the kids lose. Within minutes they get themselves immersed into their own little fantasy world. A place where stick huts turn into castles that need defending, the dog turns into a
big monster that need fighting off and the rock pools turn into ponds with prehistoric creatures. The beach is always popular to cast out some bait or a lure to try and catch some fish. You don’t have to get fancy. Kids love to make things work for themselves and they quickly find a crab that goes as bait or use some of last night’s dinner to catch a shark. The river mouth in Collingwood can be a great place on an incoming tide to cast lures for a Kahawai. Those fish come up the river mouth with the tide in big numbers sometimes and can keep the kids entertained for hours. They also make up a nice meal when smoked fresh.

Former school teacher Diarmuid Brazendale, who is the Football Development Officer at Nelson Bays Football, has been very instrumental in helping forge links between schools and clubs. "We are continuing to provide for free our Football in Schools programme, which supports the PE curriculum and gives primary-aged children an opportunity to try football and
hopefully fall in love with the game," says Diarmuid. "It’s been particularly encouraging to see more girls participating." Already well underway this year is training for upcoming younger players at the Tasman United Academy (run by Nelson Bays Football), which is at almost full capacity with around 90 players participating. "We have a programme which takes players who are ambitious in different age groups and gives them a dif-
ferent kind of coaching experience. It’s a little more focussed and the expectations are a lot higher than club players," says Diarmuid, who coaches at the Academy. "We have split the academy this year - there are four boys’ squads and two girls’ squads, which is a far cry from a couple of years ago when we only had around two or three girls playing. I am really pushing the female side of the game," says Diarmuid. "It’s great that girls who are serious about

The bulk of the academy is purely training and the squad members play in their usual clubs on Saturdays, but one of the girls’ squads will be playing in a boys’ league for their football development. "They will technically be as able as the boys, but physically it will be harder for them." In 2011, New Zealand Football wrote a curriculum to develop more technically accomplished players throughout the country, administering a programme called the FTC (Federation Talent Centres). When Tasman United became a national league club, Diarmuid, who is very passionate about football, was asked to deliver the programme at the Tasman United Academy to create a talent pathway towards professionalism. "We have continued with the structure but have created our own philosophy and mission statement about the types of players we want to create through a trial process," explains Diarmuid. "We don’t take players just on ability. We are focussed on their capacity. Our philosophy and mission statement asks that our players be self-driven, open to learning, and want to get better. Attitude is everything." All of the coaches at the Tasman United Academy who train and nurture young players have a high level of coaching qualifications and experience. "Nelson Bays Football is excited about the potential to make significant improvements in

"Our primary focus this year is to increase the number and level of coaching courses/qualifications that club coaches attend and achieve, and we are committed to ensuring that the players in Nelson have a coaching experience that is tailored to Nelson’s needs and compares favourably with those in the main centres of Wellington and Auckland." The train-
ing sessions at the Tasman United Academy (which are based on the NBF Model) are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at Saxton Field. They are designed to maximise opportunities for players to learn good habits and practice the skills necessary to reach the next level. Tasman United Academy has unique points of difference that distinguish it from similar organisations. "We are very well planned," says Diarmuid. "We send out lesson
plans in advance, and expect players to understand what’s expected of them. Recently I sent out a motivational video asking players to reflect on what they have learned so far. Our coaches ask questions like ‘what should you do in a situation like this?’, and ‘why are you doing that?,’ to get them to be problem solvers." At the Tasman United Academy, attitude far outweighs ability in the selection process, and an individual’s family financial situation is never regarded as a barrier to inclusion in training. "We make sure young players are not put off from participating and provide support where necessary," says Diarmuid. The academy runs four boys' squads (12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Grade) and two girls' squads (one junior and one senior). Nelson wins back tennis shield SporTS Nelson has won back the Winstanley Shield after a solid display against Marlborough on Sunday. The Winstanley Shield is one of the three senior tennis fixtures played annually. Former Nelson College pupil, David Winstanley, introduced the shield in the early 1980s. The tie is traditionally a triangular fixture between Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast, with two men and two women from each association. This year’s fixture was contested between Nelson and Marlborough. Marlborough women Jade Otway and Donna Clark dominated the doubles in the first leg of the fixture, winning comfortably 6-2, 6-0. The men’s doubles played out in quite the opposite way with a hard-hitting battle between four experienced doubles players. Simon Phillips (Nelson) bringing out a strong serve and competent volley against the quick reactions of Marlborough pair Hamish Morrow and Dave Sandford. Phillips strong play was complimented by Taylor Bianco’s ability to get to almost every

New Nelson Giants head coach Jamie Pearlman will at least have some familiar faces to look at when he arrives next month. Pearlman is the current assistant coach with the Cairns Taipans in the Australian National Basketball League and late last year the Australian was hired to guide the Mike Pero Nelson Giants in its 2018 NBL campaign. Already Pearlman has recruited Taipan Damon Heuir and today the club announced it has signed another Cairns player in Jerry Evans Jr. Evans Jr is a 203cm swingman from Los Angeles in the United States. He played for the University of Nevada and then professionally in Poland and Greece before heading to play in the Australian National Basketball League. Last year the 27 year-old played in Aussie SEABL league and was the leagues fourth-leading scorer with an average of 21 points per game. Giants general manager Bill Dahlberg says Evans Jr fits the bill for the style of player they were after. "We were looking for an athletic

Photo: Supplied. defender who can score plus get to the ring and Jerry will bring some other qualities that will help us develop as a team.” Evans Jr is the fifth player to commit to the Giants for the 2018 season with Kyle Adnam, Tohiraukura Smith-Milner, Finn Delany and Heuir all previously signing on. The Giants will start their season with a home game against the Supercity Rangers on April 28.

He heads to Jacks Tyres on a Tuesday to give it a wash so it looks good on display at Three Brothers Corner. He also works at the track during the week, keeping the scrutineering pad clean and tidy. He loves being involved and it’s great that the club have been able help with community support, Tom has even made his own “Top of the South” t-shirt. His support persons, Paul and Willie, have really bought out the best in Tom. They know his limits and work to his strengths, and it’s been a blessing for the family and there’s a positive future ahead. Speedway has played a huge part in Tom’s life.

His favourite to watch is the Super Saloons, the class his brother Ian recently won the NZ Grand Prix in. Tom’s passion is relentless, he has a giant scrapbook full of speedway articles, cut-outs of race cars and posters decorate his wall. He gets to practice his race calling when his nephew Jack is out in the paddock racing his Ministock and even gets to do a few quiet laps with Ian’s guidance. Tom has an intellectual disability. He is taught life skills by “support persons” who were able to focus Tom and teach him life skills needed

Nelson to host national schools tri champs Despite the onslaught of nature, up to 400 of New Zealand’s top school triathletes will compete for national glory at Rabbit Island in four weeks in the Tineli National Schools Tri Champs on March 19, 20. Parts of the proposed run course for the event have been washed into the sea, so a hasty revamp of plans has been necessary, with part of the run now taking place on grass rather than the sealed surface initially planned. Thanks to the support of Tasman District Council and forestry company PF Olsen, the young triathletes, aged between 10 and 18, will compete on closed roads. Part of the beach reserve will be closed to ensure safety for competitors and allow for a temporary race village to be set up. With competitors, parents, teachers and volunteers, up to 1000 people will fill the space while racing takes place. The event includes The Suzuki individual triathlon in the morning of Monday, 19 March, with the Nelson Bays Suzuki individual
aquathlon (run/swim/run) in the afternoon. The next day brings the excitement of team racing as groups of four compete in the Port Nelson team tag triathlon. This relatively new sport will feature in the Commonwealth Games in April and also at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Local sports fans have a chance to be involved, with the organisers seeking more volunteers to help around the course. Local families are asked to open their homes to young athletes by offering billets to out-of-town competitors and possibly their parents. Ken Beck Drive will be closed at Bullivant Rd, a kilometre south of the beach reserve, with traffic access through the forest roads, allowing public access to the west end of the beach reserve. Members of the public will be welcome at the event village to watch the action. The organising team has been at work on the event for a year, with more than 100 pages of documentation being produced in the

Race director Peter Gibbs of the Nelson Triathlon Club took over the task in September, when early organiser Alan Bryson stepped up in his swim training job at ASB pool. Peter was soon joined by Jeni Thornborough, secondary schools sports coordinator for Sports Tasman, bringing together the resources and skills of both
organisations. Marlborough triathlon coach Mark Grammer and Nelson teacher and triathlete Jon Linyard lent their experience and knowledge, and international age group triathlete Martin Thompson has taken a central role in the organization in recent months. As part of the buildup, Ironman triathlete Britta Martin has been coaching a small group of school
triathletes since November. The Chia Teen Triathlon Training Team is open to budding competitors at 4pm each Monday at Tahunanui reserve. The next step in the buildup is the Port Nelson Schools Triathlon on Tuesday, 6 March. This regional event for schools from Buller across to Marlborough has also attracted entrants from the North Island anxious to experience racing on the national course. As well as Tineli, Port Nelson, Nelson Bays Suzuki and Chia, other Nelson businesses to give major support include Village Cycles, who will be at the venue providing checks and repairs, and Sujon. A highlight of the event will be the draw for a new Suzuki Swift. One competitor from each of Triathlon NZ’s national championship races over the season will line up beside one lucky athlete from the Rabbit Island event to be in a six way draw for the big prize.
