Rocks Rd upgrade ‘a priority’ says NZTA Kate Russell and Charles Anderson

Nelson is one step closer to having a “worldclass” waterfront after council agreed to push ahead with prioritising improvements for walkers and cyclists on Rocks Rd. In June, NZTA announced it would progress a business case to investigate the Southern Link and Rocks Rd walkway/cycleway. However, on Monday the Regional Transport Committee approved a proposal to separate out the Rocks Rd plan, which would effectively prioritise it over any move to potentially build a new arterial route through Nelson. For decades the “Southern Link” has loomed in Nelson’s transport plans. The route would see a new highway built along the railway reserve and down into Victory to the port. Its proponents say it will transform the city’s traffic woes. Its opponents say that it will result in unneeded disruptions for local communities. In 2004, the Environment Court struck down a plan to build the road saying not enough had been done to investigate other options. NZTA representative Jim Harland said that any new road would not be built until “early 2030s” and the agency recognised something needed to be done in the short term to address challenges for cyclists and walkers on Rocks Rd. “We recognise we need to look to see what, if anything, we can do to make that safer in the interim while there will still be heavy vehicles and quite a few cars going down there. “We need to look at what we can do to make things safer.”

online with some calling it ‘PC gone mad’ and ‘the death of Santa’. Many said that their children were disappointed and confused at not seeing the jolly fat man in the red suit. Event director Mark Soper said that organisers wanted to portray a multicultural Christmas but were “truly sorry that the parade did not live up to expectations and are saddened to hear so many people were disappointed”.

Mark told to RNZ and Nelson City Council that Nelson jeweller Glen James was due to play the role of Santa but pulled out after the controversy of his float at the Richmond Santa Parade. Glen has angrily deigned this. “I was bloody livid when I heard he had said that. I never had any role as Santa. I was asked about a month before the parade but said no because I had my own float. That was the last I had heard

of it. To be honest I think he is passing the buck and trying to throw me under the bus. If you make a mistake, own it.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says not having Santa at the Santa Parade was a bad call by organisers and now the council and local retailers are working to bring him to the city. “My read of this is that the organisers got themselves into a muddle and forget to

We say: Bad form over Santa Parade decision When Rob Herewini appeared in a sleigh on Sunday’s parade dressed, not as a traditional Santa but as Hana Kōkō, there were undoubtedly some raised eyebrows. Firstly, because it was a Santa Parade and surely ensuring Santa is at his own parade is a given. Secondly, because such a dramatic change of the main drawcard of the event hadn’t been communicated at all. If there had been some warning then parents and grandparents would have been able to explain what was happening to their children. Even letting the MC of the event know would have been a good start, so it wasn’t announced “here comes Santa” during the parade.

Organisers say the idea was to portray a multi-cultural Christmas, which is a fine idea. If Santa had appeared alongside Hana Kōkō, there would likely have been no issue. If Hana Kōkō had worn something that more closely resembled a traditional Santa costume, there likely would have been no issue. In the end it was an idea poorly executed, poorly communicated. But judging from some of the comments that were circulated online, you might think that it was the end of civilisation. Parents and children had the right to be legitimately disappointed. But what resulted in the comment section of news websites and on Facebook were people whose prejudices were pal-

pable. Many had found a cause they could use as an excuse to air bigotry, division and unneeded aggression. Unfortunately, in these sorts of circumstances, those who view the situation with an air of common sense are not the vocal majority. Instead, those who thrive on outrage, whether feigned or real, soar to the top of the comments. I would like to think some of the attitudes seen are not reflective of the larger consensus – that really it wasn’t the end of the world, it wasn’t the death of Santa and that the kids will be just fine. Next year, I want to see Hana Kōkō again. But this time give the kids a Santa too. - Editor.

The decision still has to go to full council for approval on 13 December. The NZTA says that Nelson is on the cusp of being classified as a “high growth” region with the population expected to grow by almost 10 per cent over the next 10 years. They also state that tourism is very important to the region and that the council wants to deliver a “world class” waterfront for the city along Rocks Rd. However, there was a challenge in that the purpose of the city’s main arterial routes Rocks Rd and Waimea Rd are not clearly defined. “Continued population, business and industry growth combined with a strong tourism industry is putting the transport network in Nelson and Richmond under pressure.” In the public forum, Peter Olorenshaw from Nelsust urged the committee to accept the scope of the investigation, say-

Peter presented a model of what Rocks Rd could potentially be, featuring a 4m wide shared path, a 2m wide carparking/tree area from the Boat Shed to Tahuna, a generous cycling lane, two 3m traffic lanes and refuges every 100m to make it easy to cross the road. “We need a 4m wide shared path, not a skimped out 3m wide one … I really encourage you to support this well and do it earlier rather than later.” Committee chair Mike Rutledge says it was a good decision. “It’s essential we have an efficient and resilient corridor for freight to reach our port,

safe and accessible connections for pedestrians and cyclists, a vibrant and thriving CBD, and a world-class waterfront for everyone to enjoy. Councillor Matt Lawrey said the Rocks Rd single stage business case was a “breakthrough” for Nelson. “This is a great step forward, we’re one step closer to having a waterfront for everyone. I know there are a lot of hoops to jump through … but this is a great day for Nelson.” Mayor Rachel Reese said it was a complex project. “This project has, I think, been portrayed as something quite different from what it is. In order to deliver the network we’re all wanting, we have to go thought this process.”

Nelson now has a blueprint for how to run large scale events after the resounding success of the inaugural All Blacks test. The historic test pumped almost $10 million into the local economy with retailers enjoying record sales, the Nelson City Council heard last Thursday. Tasman Rugby marketing manager Les Edwards told councillors that September’s test celebrated

the city and the region. “I’ve met heaps of people since and the vast majority are overwhelmingly supportive of what it did for the city.” He said Nelson now had a playbook of tools for how to run events. “It was a credit to the city and will be remembered for years to come.” Presenting to council on Thursday, Les and Nelson Regional Development Agency CEO Mark Rawson showed the economic re-

port reflected the success. The sell-out occasion saw 21,404 fans pack Trafalgar Park. From the All Blacks arrival on the Sunday through till the day after the game, retail spend throughout the CBD was 13 per cent higher than the previous year and the second-highest in the last six months, only by surpassed Easter. Mark said the economic impact of the event was $9.9million, with accommodation up 35 per cent, food and beverage up 24 per cent,

and boutique retail up 13 per cent. “All retail categories were up for the week.” This was partly down to the success of the Game Day App that popped up in the Nelson App, giving punters information on what was going on during the event. Les said the All Blacks loved the experience of being in Nelson, thanks in large part to them being able to walk freely through the CBD. The test audience reached well

over a million people, with the city being showcased through Sky Sport in a number of countries including Japan, South Africa, France and the United Kingdom. “The legacy there is outstanding,” Les said. Les cited Sky Sport commentator Tony Johnson’s comments in the aftermath of the test. He said it was the best experience he has had around an All Black test rugby since the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

New platform for Nelson App Locally Owned and Operated

After more than a year, 20,000 downloads and an awards haul, the Nelson App has been given a makeover. The app, which was first launched in June last year and has more than 22,000 downloads, has just been updated to reflect the way Nelsonians want to consume their news and information. The app is the foundation of the Nelson Weekly Ltd’s digital strategy and seeks to put what locals want to know in the palm of their hand. Managing director Andrew Board says that the app was always about making sure Nelsonians felt connected to what was going on in the region. “The new platform makes that even easier. Not only does it update our news faster, but it also allows readers to share stories across social media.” Andrew says the popularity of the app shows that it is some-

Kellys Bush open day: Kellys bush is holding a public open day this Sunday, 9 December from 1 - 4pm at 100 Enner Glynn Rd. The conservation project has been going for over 30 years, and in that time the Kelly Family, along with community groups, have trebled the size of the existing primal forest. They have built trails, steps, bridges and picnic areas for the public to enjoy on the open day. The forest contains trees that are hundreds of years old and it is home to many rare and interesting species of fauna and flora, such as three species of gecko, giant land snails and worms plus 13 species of native birds. There are nearly 80 species of native trees and shrubs, making this the closest to a native botanical garden anywhere in the Nelson city area. Entry to the open day is free, donations welcome. Tahunanui stabbing: Two men accused of kidnapping, stabbing and aggravated robbery have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them and opted for a trial by jury. The charges relate to an incident outside the Tahunanui Fun Park where the alleged stabbing took place on November 16. The two men appeared via AVL link in the Nelson District Court on Monday. Reuben James Anderson, 32, stands accused of the stabbing, while his co-accused is charged with possessing an offensive weapon. They both stand accused of aggravated robbery and kidnapping. Anderson applied for electronically monitored bail on Monday, but Judge Tony Zohrab denied his request.

What a catch: Unofficial world record for 8-year-old Andrew Board An eight-year-old Nelson girl can claim an unofficial world record for a massive 21.36lb (9.68kg) snapper caught in Tasman Bay on Friday. Jasmine Elvines landed the snapper and quietly worked at reeling it in while her father, grandfather and aunt were busy with other lines that had also caught fish. Dad Jason says, as he was distracted, Jasmine just kept winding. "Jasmine was just dealing with her rod in the background. She was struggling a wee bit, but she just kept on winding, and I

thought 'good stuff '. Then we saw what popped up and I was blown away. I had no idea she had such a heavy fish on." It took Jason two attempts to land it in the net. "The first time it slipped out and I thought 'oh no'. I made sure of it the second time." Jasmine, a Wakefield School student, says she was "really surprised". "We always try to catch a fish like that," says Jason. "And she just comes out and trumps us quietly." The fish was so heavy that Jasmine couldn't even lift it for a photo. "We had to kneel her down and

Man tried to post cannabis Sara Hollyman A man who tried to post cannabis to Dunedin in a courier bag has been convicted on multiple drug charges. Christopher John Brough, 55, was convicted in the Nelson District Court of cultivating, possessing and dealing cannabis. The courtroom heard how, on October 20, Brough went to NZ

Post on Gloucester St and posted a courier bag to a relative in Dunedin. Three days later, while a staff member was sorting the mail for distribution, they noticed a smell of cannabis coming from the bag. The bag was opened and among the contents was a bag containing 35.5 grams of dried cannabis, so police were called in. On November 7 the Nelson Po-

lice Tactical Crime Unit executed a search warrant of Brough’s home. In a bedroom they found a large tent with eight cannabis plants growing inside, ranging in size from 30cm-90cm high. The tent set up had lights suspended from the roof, an electric fan to circulate air, an extractor fan and filter to remove air from the tent and a temperature gauge.

In the wardrobe of another bedroom police found 8 smaller plants and 6 seedlings. While searching the house they also located more than 20 snaplock bags containing a total of almost 450g of dried cannabis, of high and moderate quality, much of which had been crushed to a consistency to be smoked or diffused in cannabis “tea”. Police also found 250 cannabis

seeds around his home. Brough claimed responsibility for the cannabis saying it was for his own use and admitted trying to post some to Dunedin. In explanation, he told police that he was planning to go to Dunedin and wanted to have a supply of cannabis while he was there. Judge Tony Zohrab convicted Brough and remanded him on bail for sentencing on January 28.

Making the Wakapuaka Hall great again Sara Hollyman The Wakapuaka Memorial Hall has become the subject of a drive to get the community engaged with the building once again. The hall was built in the 1950s and quickly became the pillar of the North Nelson rural community,

hosting weddings, birthdays, community groups and events. But, over the years, occupancy has dwindled and CLM’s Nelson community venues team member Gareth Cashin is spearheading the drive to bring the community back to the hall.

The latest in a string of events is the Wakapuaka Christmas Market, which will be held on Friday December 14, from 4pm to 7pm. Gareth says the market boasts many unique stalls with opportunities to pick up last-minute gift ideas, grab a bite to eat, and

simply catch up with other locals. He says this is the third market he has organised, with the help and support of Nelson Farmers Market and promises to be the best one yet. The market is indoors with some outdoor vendors, so will not be affected

by weather and Eftpos is available, which is a new feature for the market. The Christmas market is part of a six-month trial of monthly markets at the hall which Gareth hopes will take off and build, month by month. Betty Salter has been busy preparing her range of

artwork for the market – the first she has attended at the building. “I think it’ll be jolly good if it takes off, if it can grow and people can keep coming then it’ll be great.” She says she is happy to be a part of the market because there is nothing else like it in their community.

Christmas decorations to go up this week Kate Russell The banners will be back but there will also be some new elements in Nelson’s 2018 Christmas display. The decorations will go up at the end of this week with Nelson City Council allocating a total budget of $70,000, which allows for constructing, installing and maintaining the displays. A council spokesperson says they are reusing what they can from the $100,000 investment they made last Christmas as well as introducing some new components. The summer banners and tree wraps will be back in the inner-city streets. The decorations couldn’t be hung up any earlier as some of the floats from Sunday’s Santa Parade were “quite high” and wouldn’t have been able to pass under the banners. A new Christmas tree will light up 1903 Square in upper Trafalgar St, featuring a lighting display from the Light Nelson team. Another Light Nelson installation will be on

Nelson’s Christmas banners will be back this week. the Church Steps and the Cathedral bell tower will be illuminated. The clock tower at Civic House will also be running a lighting display. The “Catch a Star” installation by Lee Woodman is on display again in the Cathedral, where there are also plans for a large nativity scene. Locals can expect to see some of the characters appearing around the city as they make their way there in the lead up to Christmas. Uniquely Nelson is also working closely with central city businesses on initiatives, such as carol singing performances in the two weeks prior to Christmas, Christmas trees outside shops and lighting displays projecting on to the footpath outside shops on Bridge St.

Bridge St bands together for Christmas

Kate Russell If you’ve noticed Bridge St looking a bit more Christmassy than usual, you’d be right. A total of 31 businesses on the inner-city street have come together to give Nelson shoppers the ultimate festive experience, all while helping a local charity. Pocket Park has been adorned with a Christmas tree, ‘elfie-selfie’ board and gift drop box to support local charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters. Shops are using lights to project snowflakes on the footpath and 22 of the businesses are running an ‘elf on the shelf ’ selfie competition for shoppers. Yvon Smits from Bridge St business Jewel Beetle initiated the idea in September after being inspired by a trip to Holland. From there, meetings were organised, resources were pulled, and the idea came to life. “The group just grew bigger and bigger,” says Yvon. “There are some cool businesses here in Nelson - it’s not just all about the big box stores.” Simon and Cora Moore, who are soon to open a new café on Bridge St, are the creators of the pocket park gift drop box and say the idea was to get children to think more about giving to others. “The whole display been really popular, there have been lots of people stopping to take selfies and commenting that it’s good to see a real tree.” He says it’s exciting to be part of a “grass roots” organisation aimed at reinvigorating that end of town. “The whole process is changing the experience on Bridge St.” Nathan Moore from Vodafone, which is also locally owned and operated, says next year they hope to make it “twice as big” and incorporate a Santa’s grotto. “We thought we’d start small and do it really well. Your Voice Nelson gondola project: I don’t want to sound a bit negative here, but I think the idea of a gondola somewhere up the Brook Valley is a bit of a frost! You get a spectacular view of the same Tasman Bay scene and snowy Mt Arthur on the Tahuna NBus route along Prices Drive for $3 (less with a Gold Card). I’ve been over the new Day’s Track also (if I can anyone can) and the views from there are truly magnificent. The Nelson City Council has already wasted $100,000 on this silly gondola project so let’s hope they don’t blow a “fist full of dollars” on a “road to nowhere”. Anton Hyman, Nelson

Political inference: I am saddened to read about the criticism our Mayor Rachel Reese is getting for agreeing to be on the front cover of Nick Smith's latest newsletter. Unfortunately, like it or not, political overtones will be read into that which cannot be avoided. At local government level in New Zealand we don’t like to see our councillors being aligned to any mainstream political party and that was very obvious with the furore that was caused when councillors Lawrey and Fulton became Green Party candidates prior to the last election. They have done that without declaring their political allegiances before they were elected as councillors. We like to think that people elected to council are strong and independent and have the ability to make a contribution to local affairs without carrying any

Gone was the traditional Santa with his full white beard and red suit, replaced by a Maori man wearing a red korowai, or cloak. The Santa Parade for me is about children and the joy and mystery of Christmas. I vividly remember as a young boy watching the mix of floats go past and the growing excitement of seeing the last float with the REAL SANTA. I have repeated the same experience with my own children. Sunday’s Santa Parade without Santa just fell flat.

The issue is not the ethnicity of our Santa. I do not care whether he is Maori, European, Indian, Chinese or Samoan. But to be Santa, he needs the traditional white beard and red suit. I found the justification for the Santa switch as annoying as the parade. We are told we need a Maori Santa in a cloak to reflect our biculturalism and multiculturalism. I welcome Nelson’s increased diversity but that is no reason to trash our own cultural traditions. The claim that a third of Nelson people were not born here is hardly a good reason to dump our traditional Santa. The largest

group of new Nelsonians is from other parts of New Zealand. The biggest group from overseas is 5,500 from the UK, as compared to 500 from Asia, and 400 from the Pacific. Nelson’s population is 85% European, 8% Maori, 4% Asian and 2% Pacific. Nor do I accept that Santa is just for Europeans. Some of the Facebook comments were even more over the top, claiming Santa was a symbol of British colonisation and domination. Why does everything have to be so political? Santa is a symbol of fun and mystery. He is about giving anonymously and the joy of

Our community does need to celebrate our diversity of cul-

tures. I love our Whakatu Marae, the greater profile we now give Waitangi Day and the increased focus on Maori culture in our schools. I love seeing the recognition of festivals like Matariki, the Chinese New Year and the celebration of Diwali. But this is no reason to radically change existing cultural traditions like the celebration of Christmas, New Year or Easter. My hope is that common sense will prevail next year and that Santa with his white beard and red suit is again the star attraction of our Christmas parade. Advert.

The Nelson sky will be lit up next weekend for the annual lantern celebration at the Centre of New Zealand. Locals will let lanterns loose from the hilltop as they celebrate the wonders the night sky possesses. Seven-year-old Ashdyn McDowell attended a lanternmaking workshop with mother Karyn on Saturday in prepara-

tion for the celebration. Karyn says taking time to get your children working with their hands is crucial in today’s modern world. “I definitely appreciate the more interpersonal touch of the workshops, we could learn this online but it’s just not the same as being here.” Karyn says the workshops help “nurture that inner creative spirit which is very special.” “We all get so busy and just

need to take the time to slow down and enjoy things like this.” Locals are invited to attend lantern making workshop this Saturday at Community Art Works from 10am. A four-hour workshop, attendees will work with skilled craftspeople to create a very special lantern to bring to this year's Lantern Celebration. Numbers limited, early booking recommended.

Central school wins mural comp Sara Hollyman Nelson Central School pupils are celebrating after they won the Nelson Enviroschools Kereru Count ‘Design a Mural’ competition. The competition, run by Enviroschools, tasked primary schools around the region with taking part in the Great Kereru Count and using the inspiration to design a mural that celebrates the Kereru and Nelson’s natural environment. Nelson Central’s mural speaks of the connection to Wakatu and its surrounding environments, through the flora, fauna, memories and love for the region. Student’s said they chose a range of native birds, trees and activities from across the region as that's what makes Nelson special to them.

From high school drop out to graduate super mum Kate Russell Lara Simons left school on her sixteenth birthday with no qualifications – but, with a young daughter to care for, she was inspired to turn her life around. Last Thursday, the now 20-year-old mum won the top academic achiever award for 2018 at Nelson’s Young Parents’ School and is moving on to study automotive engineering at NMIT next year. She was one of five students to graduate and one of 19 young mums enrolled this year. Lara says that mainstream high school just wasn’t for her. “I didn’t have any friends in my class and felt like I wasn’t getting enough help. I left school thinking I’d get a job, pay rent and just survive. I wasn’t thinking about my future.” Lara was referred to the Young Parents’ School in 2016 when her daughter Shylah was just sixmonths-old. “I was on the youth benefit and one of the obligations was that I had to be enrolled in education. But I tried to get out of it, I really had to intention of staying.” But with some perseverance from head teacher Philippa Trewavas, Lara stuck with it. “I’m so thankful Philippa pushed me to do it. Coming here has been so different from school. We have one-on-one time the whole day and are involved in all the classroom activity.” This year, Lara also spent one day a week at the NMIT Trades Academy, where she was able to embrace her passion for cars. “I would love to own my own workshop one day.” The Young Parents’ School opened at Auckland Point School in 2013 so pregnant and teenage parents could continue their education. As well as academic learning there is also a focus on parenting and building life skills and care is provided for their children at the onsite kindergarten. Philippa says, in the time Lara has been with them they have seen her grow into an independent learner with increasing determination to achieve her goals. “This year she’s shown us all what can be done when you make the decision to try. It’s not an easy task being a young parent and to do school as well.” Meanwhile, Lara celebrated Shylah’s third birthday on Sunday which Lara says gives her even more determination to do the best she can for her daughter. “Without her I wouldn’t want to further my future.”

Airport redevelopment enables regional growth There’s been widespread praise for the striking new terminal building at Nelson Airport, which was officially opened in early October, completing its first stage of redevelopment. The multi-million dollar terminal is modern, spacious and light, it features local timber and has stunning mountain and sea views. “It’s undoubtedly a beautiful building,” says Nelson Airport Chief Executive, Rob Evans. “We are excited to get the first stage finished; we’ve got another year to go; by then there’ll be a complete transformation. Every day we pinch ourselves when we walk in. It will arguably become an icon in New Zealand architecture and it’s a wonderful asset, but the wider story is that the whole region is growing up, and we are part of that story helping that growth; we want airlines to expand; we also want to help tourism; it’s an enabler for Nelson-Tasman to benefit from. It’s a great first and last impression; the timber, the views and so on. With so much going on around here, like Air New Zealand Regional Maintenance, the helicopters, and the flight schools, we are adding our shoulder to that wheel.” Rob says that when he first started at Nel-

son Airport Ltd in 2015 its infrastructure was quite dated and there had not been a lot of investment since 1974 when the terminal first opened. “Then Jetstar, Kiwi Regional , and Origin Air commenced flying and we had a flurry of activity which stressed our infrastructure, but also provided significant growth to a number of new ports as well as existing ones.” The terminal was built when passenger numbers were 20,000 and prior to the new airlines coming on board, there were around 750,000 passengers with Air New Zealand, so Nelson Airport was already really busy. The additional growth really stimulated the market and suddenly we were confronted with huge growth on the back of ageing infrastructure. So, we had to act pretty quickly and decided to seek proposals from architectural firms around the country. We were excited to see Studio Pacific Architecture talk about the natural light, local timbers and the LVL Nelson Pine story which they presented in compelling vision. We wanted a simple intuitive layout; an open space for optimal customer experience; they came into their own with the roof structure, the locally grown timber, and from an engineering perspective

The new facilities sported orange-coloured panelling on the control tower and the lower levels of the terminal. The bright colour was repeated on the inside with more than 1000 square yards of ‘circus’ patterned carpet in orange, yellow, brown, gold and black colours. A few months after the new control tower opened at Nelson Airport, special glass in the windows was replaced due to multiple reflections in some panels.” (The Story of Nelson Aviation.) The book also states,“its additional proximity to the geographical centre of New Zealand, short flying time to the capital city and excellent weather, Nelson Airport has experienced continual growth of air traffic over more than seven decades.” This growth has deemed the new terminal building a necessary development and one which creates an exciting flightpath for our region’s future. After getting off to a difficult start, that involved the employment of an unsuitable chef, the new owners of Crusoe’s Café and Bar in Stoke are pleased to announce they are back on track. “Initially we had a major staffing issue to contend with, but now we have found a lovely lady, Kylie Richards, whose hospitality experience includes two years baking at Tozzetti’s, and four years working at the Boatshed Cafe,” says Crusoe’s Café owner Martin Todd who co-owns the business with his partner Jayne. “We have also employed some great front of house and kitchen staff, so when people come here for breakfast or lunch they can enjoy friendly, welcoming service in our delightful courtyard cafe.” Since taking over the business in early October, Martin and Jayne have been slowly implementing

Floats turn on a show Sara Hollyman

The Nelson Santa Parade turned the central city streets into a celebration of Christmas on Sunday. The weather cleared making way for local musical acts and community groups to bring Nelson to life.

There were rocket ships and helicopters along with Colombian dancers, Star Wars stormtroopers, a submarine, a gingerbread house, Nelson’s emergency services and many others who greeted the crowd. Nelsonians filled the streets from 11am after some miscommunication with the start

Festive treat for ballet lovers Kate Russell The story and music of Tchaikovsky will come to life in a festive ballet next weekend, starring some of New Zealand’s up and coming dancers. Presented by Louise Hawke, director of the Academy of Ballet Arts, the original production entitled Tchaikovsky! is on for two shows only at the Theatre Royal. Using the actual words of the intimate letters the composer wrote to his Baroness sponsor, Louise has pieced together scenes from his most popular ballet masterpieces, including Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Marinsky Pas de Deux. As the story unfolds the ballet is presented with voice narration, archive images and cinematic effects. Starring Jacob Chown of the NZ Royal Ballet as Tchaikovsky and Adriana Harper, a former soloist with the RNZB, as the Baroness, Louise says there will be a high level of talent on show. “This is not a ballet school show, this is a professional level original production,” says Louise. Local students taking ballerina roles in this production include Georgia Noriss, Laeticia Austin

Fringe Festival takes a break On the back of its most successful year ever, the Nelson Fringe Festival team has decided to cancel its next event after missing out on much needed funding. The festival, which has been running for four years, sees national, international and local acts put on affordable performances, which would struggle to otherwise be seen in Nelson. Last year it saw 1500 attendees at 42 performances across 10 days.

However, the chair of Nelson Fringe Arts Charitable Trust, Daniel Allan, says that it is important to run the festival in a financially responsible way. “The festival relies heavily on grants and donations, that’s one way we can keep it accessible.” The team recently missed out on a large grant that would have guaranteed its return. But Dan says it is important to have funding so that the Fringe team and the artists

were valued for their important contributions to the community. “We can’t be sure this is possible for 2019,” Dan says. “The festival needs to be properly resourced. By taking a break in 2019 we can use the time to build our resources and run a great Fringe again in 2020.” Dan says the charitable trust allows all donations through its Givealittle page and is interested in speaking with anyone who might want

Georgia dreams of conquering the sea

With winds exceeding 40 knots per hour, wild four-metre waves and a whirlpool tide, Georgia Schokking was having a rough introduction to her first Starling sailing regatta. After capsizing, Georgia had to abandon her boat and was picked up by the rescue crew. Her yacht disappeared in the swell. As the waves battered her boat, it seemed the vessel was lost to the sea. But, miraculously, it survived unscathed. “We couldn’t see it,” she says. “It had drifted a lot, but we eventually found it and it was fine. Many people that day lost their sails and their masts snapped that day, I was lucky.” However, the experience didn’t dent her confidence and it has been much smoother sailing ever since. “It was terrifying but exhilarating,” the 16-year-old says. It is this sort of attitude that may well see her become the youngest

Kiwi in history to sail around the world. The prodigy says she was inspired to make the trip by her idol, Dutch sailor Laura Decker, who is the youngest to ever sail around the world solo at just 14. The two-year journey is one Georgia hopes to undertake in the next few years. While changing tides and marine life aren’t of much concern,

it is pirates that will be the biggest worry for Georgia. “I watched Captain Phillips the other day, so I am a bit worried about pirates.” The Nelson College for Girls student only began her esteemed sailing career five years ago and has already cemented herself as one of the best young guns in the country. The Nelson College for Girls student recently won a scholarship

to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s popular Nespresso National Youth Training Week at Kawau Island this month. Nespresso will pay the entire fee for Georgia to attend the week after she was selected from a large group of talented young applicants. “Living in Nelson means it is always expensive to travel for sailing and this is going to make a

world of difference.” This will be Georgia’s second NYT week having also attended last summer and she is more than ready to take her sailing knowledge and skills to another level. Usually a skipper, Georgia hopes to expand her skillset. “At this year’s training week, I am wanting to gain a larger understanding of the different roles, specifically bow and trim, I also want to really improve my boat handling on a larger boat.” All the competitive sailing during the week will be completed in seven-metre Elliott’s which suits Georgia who has racked up plenty of experience sailing Elliot’s as well as Optimists, Starling’s and 420’s. In 2017, she was judged as the best female centreboard sailor at the Nelson Yacht Club and was selected to be the Nelson regional representative at the Starling National Match Racing Competition. Georgia says as well as sailing the world, she also hopes to sail for her country one day.

The Tasman Men’s sevens side has backed up its team of the year status as they completed a three peat at the regional qualifiers at the weekend. Tasman went through the Timaru tournament unbeaten to claim the Tofa Shield for the third year in a row and book its spot in nationals. Fresh off leading Stoke to a Motueka Sevens title, the dynamic Sam Chamberlain led the side to victory over southern rivals Otago, Southland, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and Canterbury. Sam says they went there to win it and remain undefeated. “We did that and are extremely happy as a group to achieve that goal and make it three in a row.” He credits coach Sam Gibbens for creating a quality team culture with a lot of new faces in the squad. “We had 12 players who could all do a job.” Sam says Central’s Timoci Tavatavanawai was outstanding all tournament while Jeesse Pitman’s experience was invaluable. Tennis season heats up Slow start hampers Tasman The NBS Nelson interclub season is well underway with some fiercely competitive tennis being played across the region. A surge in player numbers this year means there are 86 senior teams competing across 11 leagues with juniors hosting 43 teams across seven leagues. Another disastrous start saw Tasman concede four first half goals and with it the game, in its latest national league football game at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. Hosting a Hawke's Bay team with three former Tasman players, the match was effectivley over by half-time as Hawke's Bay United netted four first half goals to hand Tasman its seventh loss of the season.
