THE LEWIS STANTON SAGA: The year’s continued drama over Lewis Stanton, aka Hone Ma Heke, came to a head in November when he was charged with assault after a “peaceful protest” on Trafalgar St. Protests against Stanton have been ongoing, with shops hanging their washing outside their shops in September, and two local ladies, Pat Craig and Margaret Bowler, doing the same on Trafalgar St the following month.

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS: Rachel Reese romped into her second term as Nelson’s mayor in October, collecting 11,364 votes against her major rival Pete Rainey’s 5,050. Four new councillors were also welcomed – Mike Rutledge, Mel Courtney, Stuart Walker and Bill Dahlberg.

Natureland has some new visitors this summer – two ring-tailed lemurs. The sisters, Namako and Kaylee, arrived in Nelson on December 16th, coming from Orana Park in Christchurch. It is the first time that Natureland has had lemurs, and it will be their home until they move on to Australia to become part of a breeding group. Keeper Brigitte Kreigemhofer says the girls, who are in their teenage years, have settled in to the Natureland family extremely well, but are still getting used to the planes flying overhead. “They are really mellow and docile, and I’m excited to have a chance to work with them,” she says. Brigitte says they are pretty interested in their new neighbours, too – the capuchins. And, the feeling is mutual, with lots of interac-

Natureland trustee Meg Rutledge says there are around 100 types of lemur, and the ring-tailed lemur used to be one of the most common – but it is now endangered. They are only found on the

island of Madagascar and are easily recognisable with their black and white striped tails. Their favourite food is tamarind, a type of tree that grows in tropical climates – and they eat all parts of it. Meg says that they are able

Nelson venues will be filled with the sounds of jazz during the 2017 Nelson Jazzfest, which kicks off on January 3rd. The four-day festival features an impressive range of artists, including Sing Sing Sing, The Troubles, TROQ, Django Junkies, Cover Me, and the Richter City Rebels. The 2017 Jazzfest Director, Paul Gilmour, says there are a few changes to the festival this year, including moving the opening concert from Fairfield Park to Founders Heritage Park, and changing the date from New Years Day to January 3rd. “There were a few reasons for the venue and date change,” he says. “One was the difficulty in getting top-line artists here - they usually have well-paid New Year gigs and can’t get here in time. The other was the support people, who are always mad busy at that time of year,” he says. He says the move to Founders will also see a new starting time of 4pm and it will also allow better parking, facilities and an inside option if it rains. Paul also says there is no concert at Washbourn Gardens

this year, due to Tasman District Council opting not to increase their sponsorship of the event to cover costs. Paul says they have been lucky to secure some top-quality acts, with three out-of-town bands performing. “The Christchurch band TROQ is a Hammond organ quartet with Tom Rainey and some of the finest younger players on the music scene,” he says. “The final act, Sing Sing Sing, is the brainchild of award-winning band leader, composer and drummer, Reuben Bradley. Follow the beer trail this summer Kate Russell The 2017 Nelson Craft Beer Trail map is out – just in time for the busy summer season. Visitors to the region can pick up a copy of the map and follow the trail, with craft breweries of all sizes now stretching from Founders Heritage Park to Onekaka in Golden Bay. Many of these locally-owned, family-run breweries and outlets welcome visitors – such as Bays Brewery in Stoke, which has been going for nearly 25 years under the same ownership. Owner Peter McGrath says the craft beer trail map has been very successful for them, and they are already filling up with bookings for summer. “The lift in tourism has been substantial – we get constant groups and tours,” he says. Peter also says they have tried to introduce a point of difference for their visitors. “We didn’t want to just sell beer,” he says. “We have locally-made Wangapeka cheeses, as well as meat sticks and relishes to match our

beers - and it really works, people love it.” CEO at Nelson Hops, Doug Donelan, says that they are producing the map annually, to keep things current and fresh. “There are events and attractions as well as new bars and venues to include,” he says. “Craft Beer Depot (CBD) is a new concept in off-license craft beer sales and Eddyline is a new Brewery and Pizzeria in the region who are right on the Cycle Trail, so it is great to have them included.” But for Doug, he says the best thing about the trail is the variety of what’s on offer. “The experience can be very different from a quiet mid-week lunch at, say, Eddyline for a Pizza to a bopping Saturday afternoon at the Golden Bear in Mapua. "Both are great brewpubs but with a different offering. Nelson police want everyone to have fun these holidays, but they also want everyone to be safe. Senior Sergeant Blair Hall says the most important thing to remember over the holiday period is that the roads will become busy and drivers need to "take extra care and be patient". Thousands of visitors flock into the Nelson-Tasman region during the summer holidays and that means there are thousands more cars on our roads. "The roads will be very, very busy and there will be delays, so drivers have to be very patient," Blair says. "Take your time and take extra care when you're driving. "Police will be carrying out a number of drink-drive operations over the holidays as well as having a presence outside the large events to make sure everyone stays safe Nelson Senior on the roads." "Make sure you drink lots of water and look after each other around alcohol." Blair says police will be focusing on party hot spots and will be visible at all the big concerts. Kaiteriteri and Tahuna will be monitored closely, although Blair says "all the camps are pretty well managed".

Mountainbike club sees boom in interest Jacob Page Nelson Mountain Bike Club vice chairman Wayne Pool says the club looks on track to have more than 2000 members as a bumper summer season and the impending opening of the Wairoa Trail take shape. The club celebrated its 1500th members just a matter of months ago, but Wayne says the international attention gained from the access to the Wairoa Gorge had seen interest in its memberships swell. The club has entered into a 12-month rent-free lease agreement with RHL NZ Limited (RHL) that sees the club gain access to 70km of hand-built bike trails created on RHL’s 841-hectare property in the Wairoa Gorge, in the Wairoa Valley just outside Nelson. While there will be a cost involved in riding the gradient four and five trails, it is seen as a big plus to have it available for the public. “The Gorge’ is home to an amazing variety of hand-built mountain bike trails that run through a lush native and beech forest environment to a maximum elevation of 1200m. For the past four years, the facility has hosted the annual Dodzy Memorial Enduro race, which is open to the public

Miss Kaiteriteri remembers her big day Simon Bloomberg The iconic Miss Kaiteriteri beauty contest is one of the most durable and popular events on the holiday programme around the Nelson-Tasman region. Nelson Weekly talked to former winner Denise Mackay (nee Whitwell) about her big day on the catwalk back in 1970. Like hundreds of young teenaged girls who spent the summer holidays camping with their families at Kaiteriteri Beach, Denise Whitwell always looked forward to watching the Miss Kaiteriteri beauty contest. It was a popular and glamorous event with suntanned, bikini clad girls vying for the title of the most beautiful babe on the beach. So it was only natural that Denise, who was 16, would enter the event and take her turn on the catwalk. "We camped there the whole school holidays, right from when we were young children," Denise recalls. "I made a lot of friends there over the years and we'd look forward to seeing each other at Christmas - it was wonderful. "Miss Kaiteriteri was always one of the big events of the year and, when I was old enough, I entered because all my friends did. Beauty

pageants were still popular back then and everybody entered - the whole campground took part." Denise says she didn't expect to win and was stunned when the judges announced she was Miss Kaiteriteri 1970. "I was surprised when they said I'd won. I was just a typical teenager with pimples on my forehead - I hated those pimples. But I had a very good tan and tans were a big thing back then, so that probably helped." Denise also had a good stage presence as she strutted her stuff up and down the deck of a lorry that doubled as a catwalk. "I wore a yellow bikini and I wasn't that nervous because I used to dance in competitions, so I was used to being on stage." Denise received $40 and a packet of the sponsor's product (Benson and Hedges Gold cigarettes) for winning the contest. She also featured on the front cover of the March edition of the Nelson Photo News which her husband Murray had reprinted and blown-up before putting it on their front door for her 60th birthday party. "I didn't know he'd put it there and all our guests were giving me funny looks. I never used to tell anyone I'd won Miss Kaiteriteri

Denise trained as a primary school teacher in Christchurch after leaving Motueka in 1970 and taught at schools in Christchurch and Auckland before returning to Motueka in 2009. Although she hasn't holidayed in Kaiteriteri

since her return ("it's too crowded now"), and rarely thinks about her big day in 1970, she is pleased Miss Kaiteriteri has survived all these years. "I don't think about it much but I'm pleased it's still going. I think it's sad that they are stopping a lot of those carnivals and beauty

contests today - they used to have Mr Tahunanui and Miss Caroline Bay in Timaru and they were a lot of fun." Miss Kaiteriteri will be held at the Kaiteriteri Reserve on Monday January 2, starting at 11am. Entry is $2 per person with categories for ages two-plus.

Chefs tell us what's cooking on their BBQ

There’s nothing more quintessential to a kiwi summer then standing on the deck and cooking up a feed on your barbecue wearing jandals and a bucket hat to prevent any mullet tan lines. Sure, most of us have moved past the mullet but the barbecuing remains and for good reason, so we spoke with three local chefs and found out their favourite barbecue recipes and top tips. Kevin Hopgood, owner of Hopgoods: Kevin is one of Nelson’s more well-known chefs and says he loves cooking on a barbecue in summer, but the key is getting the heat right. “It can be a fine line between getting nicely coloured food rather than completely black food but with cooking on a barbecue, low and slow wins the race.” Kevin’s lamb steaks and grilled summer veges • Marinate 4 Lamb leg steaks in olive oil, the juice and zest of a lemon, thyme, mint and 1 teaspoon of Harissa paste for 2/3 hours. • Coat peppers, zucchini, asparagus, spring onions and mushrooms in EVO salt pepper and

grill on BBQ. This can be done first and served room temperature. Once grilled, arrange on a serving platter and scatter over lots of fresh herbs (chives, parsley coriander and mint), a touch more EVO Moroccan spice and lemon zest and chilli flakes • Grill the lamb to your liking and, before serving, let it rest, rule of thumb is if you cook for 10 mins let it rest for 10. • Serve on top of couscous, scatter with pomegranate seeds, coriander and mint. Season again and serve. This meal is great with flat bread and tzatziti and Harissa. Lincoln Womersley, Blinc Catering head chef and McCashins Brewery Kitchen & Bar owner: Lincoln says the key to a good barbecue is fresh ingredients, a good marinade, making sure your barbecue is hot enough, and a beer for while you cook. “I love cooking up a big juicy chunk of meat, or some crayfish if I’m lucky enough, they’re always really fun to cook.” Lincoln’s summer crayfish • Cut your cray straight through the middle, head to tail, add a bit of olive oil and season with salt and cracked pepper.

For the Chimichurri: 1 tablespoon sweet paprika; 1 tablespoon smoked paprika; 2 teaspoons cumin; ½ cup finely chopped fresh Italian parsley; ½ cup dried oregano; ¼ teaspoon salt; ¼ cup olive oil; 1/3 cup red wine vinegar; ¼ cup water; 2 whole cloves garlic; 1 fresh bay leaf.

Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park and Motel has been the setting for thousands of epic family holidays and next year it will mark its 90th anniversary. Once upon a time the land, including and surrounding the holiday park, was bought by the council in order to create a recreation reserve for the Nelson public to enjoy. They spent around 300 pounds and a few shillings on it, putting up some dressing rooms here and there and creating a space for those wanting to camp overnight. It was very popular from the get-go with around 700 campers visiting in the first year. In 1937, the holiday park was carved off the main reserve with operation of the business overseen by an incorporated society that is still in place today. Some of the first buildings to sit on the site were relocated barracks, with the park also being used to put up servicemen

With a band lined up, the holiday memories prize-giving as well as a couple of surprises up their sleeves, Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park guarantees it will be a fun-filled evening. Give it a Go !

I’ll start by saying I don’t think I’ve ever been more embarrassed in my life. Okay, maybe a few times, but this was definitely up there. We’ll get to my mountain biking humiliation in a minute, but first I’ll give you some context. Now that summer's here, locals will be throwing themselves into the outdoors, soaking up as much sunshine and fresh air as they can before having to go back to work. One of the best and most popular ways to do is by grabbing a mountain bike and taking to the hundreds of trails in our region. Mountain biking is massive in Nelson and, with more tracks appearing each month, the sport is taking off. So we hit up one of Nelson’s top cross country mountain bikers, Henry Jaine, and got him to show me the ropes. Local one-stop mountain biking shop Village Cycles generously set me up with a Specialized Stump Jumper FSR and helmet, and with that we were ready to roll. Henry took me up Silvan Forest, one of the Mountain Bike Trails Trust’s newer tracks. Up the top of Champion Rd in Richmond, it’s one of the region’s most accessible hotspots, perfect for beginners and with plenty to entertain the more advanced.

One thing you should know about me is that I never do anything in halves and, with a mixture of pride and competitiveness, I don’t like failing. So when Henry took me up Alpha, the main track to the top, I went as fast as I could, determined not to look like a complete nana in front of one of Nelson’s best. And that was going great, with Henry’s tips I was "beasting" the climb and even doing semi-okay at the uphill corners - until we got to the last couple of hundred metres. And that’s when it happened. Let me just say here that nerves, sleep deprivation and minimal food are never good fuel for tackling any exercise. Thankfully, I noticed the signs early and sent Henry to speed up the hill a bit before gingerly walking behind a rock and briefly tossing my cookies. I don’t think Henry knew what to think when I finally caught up, but

despite my humiliation he was absolutely lovely about it all. .co.nz I have never gotten to the point of throwing up when exercising before but that was all on me, not the track, I pushed myself to the point where my body failed to keep up with my ego. Anyway, we finally made it to the top of Hare Down, without any more spillage, and started the scary part. What I expected was a lot of me careering sideways and ripping up my palms and legs whilst whizzing downhill, but what I got was a lot of fun and a fair bit of me doing skids and occasionally being a bit of a chicken and hopping off. As you can see in the video online, I did manage to come off at the very apex of a corner, sliding off and nearly taking out Henry who was behind me, another point of embarrassment, but other than that the rest of the ride was incredible and fairly uneventful crash-wise. Silvan Forest is a beautiful place to ride, the views are incredible and you can take it as leisurely or as hard-out as you like. Just take it from me - if you’re going to tank the uphill on your first time, make sure you have plenty of sleep the night before and eat and drink something to fuel your body for the climb.

Nelson is fast becoming a host city for major sporting events and teams, but how close are we to hosting an All Blacks test. It’s been a bumper 12 months for Nelson sports fans, who have seen the Black Sticks play international hockey at Saxton Fields, the Silver Ferns host Jamaica at the Trafalgar Centre, the Wellington Phoenix and New Zealand Warriors playing preseason games, as well as the Black Caps committing to Nelson with their international cricket schedule. How realistic is it to think Trafalgar Park could host an All Blacks test in 2018? It would be one of the “minor” tests, not a Rugby Championship game, but that would hardly matter, it would sell out. Trafalgar Park’s capacity was at 18,000 for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, which is not far off the capacity of stadiums which the All Blacks have played in front of.

Nelson City Council saw it as a viable option. An All Blacks test in Nelson would also be viewed as progressive thinking and innovative on

the part of the New Zealand Rugby Union. They can take a test against a lesser team to a new area and make it a sell-out, while making it a good grass roots public relations exercise. The NZRU say allocation for tests in 2018 and 2019 will open shortly and unions are judged on several things including these criteria; financial return and ability to achieve capacity crowds, infrastructure, adding to the festival around New Zealand Rugby fixtures. “In recent years, we have encouraged unions to work closely with their territorial authorities to build good regional proposals to host Test matches,” the guidelines read. This region's sport fans have proven they will support anything that comes their way. Tasman United, despite their dismal start, have the biggest crowds in the national league, so there is no doubt Trafalgar Park would be jam-packed if the All Blacks were in town.

Kids set to benefit at speedway Jody Scott The Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway will begin its 2017 race calendar with a good cause and rarely-seen class in its feature races. The January 7 meeting is dedicated to the Child Cancer Foundation, and the club will be fundraising for this very special cause, you can help donate at the track or by going on the Nelson Speedway website and clicking on the link. The meeting sees a feature grade we rarely see at the track, the Modified Sprints. Smaller than the sprint cars, these winged machines have been the catalyst for many of the top sprint car drivers to earn their stripes. The Southern Midget Series have a round, while it’s King of the Clay for stock cars, productions, street

stocks and side cars. There is a special event planned for the kids from 4.15pm, there are spot prizes for kids who come dressed up like super heroes, plus laser tag and a bouncy castle. We thank Nick and the team from Prokarts for supporting the junior member activities again this year. which continues to be a big hit. If you’re on holiday over the summer period, you can still get your fix of speedway action no matter where you are. You can listen live on race night via Speedway live. Jacob Page Itâ€™s been a stellar sporting year from Nelson athletes at all levels of sport, so we here in Nelson Weekly sports department thought we'd cobble together our favourite moments. Locally, Wanderers won an epic Nelson Senior rugby final over Marist, while Nelson overcame Wanderers in the Tasman Trophy competition where once again Nelson teams dominated the competition against their Marlborough neighbours. Suburbs Seals won the Nelson Bays division one menâ€™s football title on the back of some impenetrable defence and tenacity. Tasman United kicked-off their first-ever national league campaign, although wins have been tough to come by so far. The Tasman Makos had two All Blacks in prop Kane Hames and loose forward Liam Squire. The Leon MacDonald-coached team made it to their second national provincial premiership final in three years, before gallantly falling to a rampant Canterbury team in the decider. Stoke has earned two top-notch global exports in double paralympic champion, Liam Malone and bowls world champion Shannon McIlroy. Zoe McBride defended her lightweight single sculls world title in commanding fashion while Kelsey Smith announced herself as a long term Black Stick with a remarkable Olympic campaign. George Bennett proved he was a legitimate rider in the Tour de France and then backed it up with

Golfer Ryan Chisnall continued his solid form as he progressed closer to becoming a professional. In terms of sporting events to be at live, the atmosphere at the Fight 4 Victory was outstanding, while the Tasman Rugby League final was something colourful to experience for the first time. On a sad note, Tasman lost one of its favourite sporting legends when free-ride mountainbiker Kelly McGarry, 33, died suddenly in February. The former Waimea College student became an internet superstar when he backflipped a 21m canyon gap in the Red Bull Rampage - the video of the flip went viral on YouTube, getting over 30 million views. The most memorable moment for me was watching Waimea Old Boys lock Lee McBrydie using his long limbs to chase a chip kick through and beat out a Stoke winger to secure a crucial win for his team which saw them make the semi-finals of the senior rugby competition. His effort, with blood running down his eye from a nasty cut epitomised grassroots hustle in its purest form.
