Six years, four kids, one degree Brittany Spencer
Among the 640 students who marched up Trafalgar Street on Friday to cele‑ brate graduating from the Nelson Mar‑ lborough Institute of Technology was one “elated” supermum.
For six years, Stoke’s Jodie‑Anne Colvin juggled giving birth to twins, late nights studying, raising her family, the stress of exams, part‑time work and volun‑ teering in the community. But on Fri‑ day, after finally receiving her Bachelor of Commerce, she couldn’t have been
happeir. Jodie‑Anne says last week was a massive milestone and stepping onto the Trafalgar Centre stage to get her de‑ gree was indescribable. “It’s amazing, I didn’t think this day was going to come, it’s been a very long pro‑ cess but I’ve made it, it’s quite surreal.”
Jodie‑Anne says she hasn’t done it alone. She’s had the support of her fam‑ ily, in particular, her father Neal Rider who is barely able to read and write. “I’m very proud of her,” says Neal. “I left school at 12 so it’s amazing to see her get a degree, I have three children and now all of them have qualifications, it’s

A dog left in a hot car ouside a Nelson property last week has died ‑ a death that the Nelson SPCA describes as “a devastating
and horrible way to go”. “Unless you’re actually taking the dog somewhere for the day, like the river or the beach, don’t take them,” SPCA manager Donna Walzl she says. Donna says that on a hot day the temperature inside your car
can reach 39 degrees Celsius within 10 minutes. A dog left in a parked car can be dead within minutes as they don’t have the ability to cool themselves down. Dogs need cool air flow because their primary method of cooling down is by panting, she says.
With the weather heating up, the SPCA is already getting an increasing number of calls every day, and Donna says “it’s only go‑ ing to get busier”. Wakefield resident and dog own‑ er Cushla Moir was disturbed last week to see an “extremely hot and
distressed” dog in a car in the Richmond Mall car park. Cushla rang the SPCA, but as staff there were unable to respond quickly enough, they suggested she went to the Richmond Police

The vehicle had gone by the time they returned. “Who knows how long it had been there before I got there?” Tasman animal control officer and former SPCA animal welfare inspector Craig Crowley says, “don’t take your dogs to town, full stop”. “You’re leaving them in a hothouse irrespective of whether you leave the windows down or not.” Craig’s comments were echoed by Richmond community constable Kyle Abbott and Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq. Richmond Mall security keeps an eye out for
dogs and will contact the SPCA is they have concerns, but Belinda says, “car parks are not the place for dogs”. Town and Country Vets manager Annette McFadgen says she understands that there may be some situations where it’s unavoidable, but says that people should “ask your vet clinic if you can leave it there for an hour or so”. Town and Country Vets have a cool area where their clients can leave their dogs and cats for a few hours “as long as we have room”. While most vet clinics run this service for their clients, she suggests ringing first to see if they have availability on the day.
If people do have concerns about dogs left in cars, “people should ring the SPCA as the first port of call as they have the power to break into vehicles,” says Craig. Donna says that the SPCA work closely with animal control and the police to identify the owner of the vehicle and rescue the dog if necessary. Nelson city has to ‘deal with flooding’ Charles Anderson The threat of Nelsonians’ homes being flooded is not going away and we need to take steps to address it, according the Nelson City Council’s top planner. Council staff were responding to last week’s front page story in the Weekly which outlined concerns from residents in The Wood over a new development that was being built more than a metre off the ground. It would tower over the street but needed to be built that way to get through the consent process due to an increased threat of flooding over the next 100 years. “We are not alone, there are a number of other places around the country that are facing the same issues,” says the council’s group manager strategy and environment Clare Barton. Nelson City Council’s new hazard information projects risk all the way to the year 2100. According to the council’s mapping, swathes of the city are at risk of flooding based on a 1 per cent “annual exceedance probability” rainfall event, meaning there is a one per cent chance of it occurring every year.

This means any new build in the flood areas, which include parts of Stoke, Nelson North, Enner Glynn, Nelson South, Atawhai and The Wood, may need to be mitigated. “This is something that’s not going to go away - either for us or anyone else in New Zealand with same situation with low lying floodable areas,” Clare says. She says the 2100 scenario is “worst case” but council was obligated to make the hazard modelling public as soon as
it had it. “If we don’t report that information and there is an event, then the community will quite rightly say ‘what are you doing about it’.” Then council legally has to apply the information under the Building Act. Clare acknowledges the concerns of people in The Wood who say that the new development is out of character for the street. She says that the hazard plan is yet to catch up with larger building planning for the city.

After years of financial woes and declining membership, the Nelson Suburban Club has announced that it will close its doors for good at the end of this month. New club president Pam Coltman wrote to members to announce the decision last week. “Sadly, with a heavy heart and on behalf of the board, I now have to advise you that the club has no option but to close the doors on this venue from 31 December 2017. Unfortunately, due to the downturn in the number of people visiting the club, we are no longer able to continue to trade in this place.” Ten staff will lose their jobs in the closure. In recent years the club battled to pay off a $2.7 million debt from an ambitious expansion in 2005. In 2014 it asked members to treble its membership fee to help keep the club afloat. Pam has only been in the role since November’s AGM and says she was excited about its future, but a lack of use by its members has forced the hand of the board. “At the Annual General Meeting of the club I stated how excited I was at the upcoming changes to the club premises that were to take place in 2018. “For those members who have kept the faith with the club through visiting and volun-
teering, I thank you for your loyalty. She says that some club members are keen to continue in another venue and Pam says it’s something she will investigate in the New Year. Club manager Chrissy Taylor stressed that all activities planned for the rest of this month will go ahead as planned, including a big 1969-themed New Year’s Eve bash. “We want to go out with a big bang,” she says.

Freedom campers have a month of total freedom until a new bylaw kicks in on December 1. Nelson City Council says it is

already fielding complaints of curious camping decisions, and many are taking to social media to vent their frustrations. But the council is powerless until the bylaw comes into effect. Last week a member of the public spotted a tent pitched by swings
outside the Elma Turner Library - presumably to take advantage of the library’s free WiFi internet. “I waited around but no one moved, so I guess they were asleep,” says Jordan Woolley, who snapped the photo after leaving work at midnight last Thursday.
However, the Nelson City Freedom Camping Bylaw does not take effect until December 1, after being adopted by the council in September. When the bylaw comes in, it will see a ban on tents and non-selfcontained vehicles in the central
city. These will be restricted to official campgrounds and private accommodation facilities. Certified self-contained vehicles will be allowed in city car parks, some reserves and residential streets

Big crowd for carols Brittany Spencer Washbourn Garden was dotted with candles as carols rang out, and children danced beneath the bubbles for Sunday’s Carols by Candlelight. Close to 1500 people packed picnics and set up chairs and rugs, in what could be the biggest ever turnout for the annual Christmas event. “The highlight was seeing so
many families and friends coming down and enjoying the Christmas Spirit,” says event organiser Lani Evans. “We had kids, parents, teenagers, and grandparents, it was a big mix and the interaction with the crowd was a lot more than we’ve ever had. There were so many kids and parents getting up and dancing, everyone was having a lot of fun.”

Concrete structures that were found on Tahunanui Beach by passers-by are “most likely” part of WW2 fortifications, according to a local archaeologist. In October, curious concrete treasures were discovered by young boys who decided to dig them up. Pictures were then posted on social media and people put forward a number of suggestions as to what they were. Theyse included dumped concrete that had been washed along by the sea, bits of a concrete tank or a concrete pipeline. However, the most interesting theory was that the pieces were once part of a WW2 fortification. The Nelson City Council had to remove the structures because they were a danger to kite surfers but it enlisted archaeologist Amanda Young who took a detailed look at photographs of them. “We were a bit flummoxed as they do look like they are WW2 defence fortifications, but they are not cropping up in any of the records,” she says. “There was a big complex of coastal defences around Nelson during that time and even earlier,

Old Nelson showcased in postcard history Kate Russell
Forget texting, email and Facebook, the way to communicate in the early 1900s for many Nelsonians was by postcard. And now, 125 of the best postcard images of the region have been made into a book, called ‘Old Nelson: A postcard history 1900 – 1940’. Publisher Derek Shaw, of Nikau Press, says the images come from the large private collection of retired Richmond postcard enthusiast, Rob Packer. The postcards are printed in duotone, each with a fully researched caption by Barney Brewster. They were all created well before the emergence of the region’s well-known tourist attractions we know today. The images include street scenes and themes such as public occasions, unfortunate events, sport and recreation,
transport, trade and commerce, education and military processions. The locations include not only Nelson City, Richmond, Motueka and Takaka, but also settlements such as Wakefield, Murchison, Tapawera and Collingwood. “For a long time, we thought Rob’s collection would make a good book,” says Derek. “The early 1900s was the boom time for postcards as it was one of the main ways of people communicating. If people didn’t want to send a letter, they often sent a postcard.” In fact, picture postcards were the “cheap and cheerful” means of keeping in touch, before telephones were in every home. Derek says the process of narrowing down Rob’s collection of over 1000 postcards started earlier this year. Rob has been collecting postcards for over 30 years,

and highlight some of the early photographers in Nelson,” says Derek. Probably the best-known photographer to feature in the book is Frederick Nelson Jones. He was Nelson’s leading postcard publisher who even had his own ‘Postcard Emporium’ on Trafalgar St. “Freddy certainly was the man about town and proved that anything could be made into a postcard,” says Derek. “He carried a ladder around with him and even climbed to the top of the cathedral spire to get different perspectives on shots.” Freddy was always conscious about the news value of his photographs and his photos of the 1929 Murchison earthquake, the 1904 Nelson College fire, floods, storms and bus wrecks were all made into postcards which feature in the book. Derek says depending on the success of the book, they may look at publishing another, featuring postcards from later years. The book was launched last Thursday at the Nelson Provincial Museum and is available to buy for $50 at local bookshops around the region and the museum.

A house for Christmas Fisherman fined $16k A Nelson man has been fined $16,000 for commercial fishing in a West Coast marine reserve. Leon Taswell Wallace pleaded guilty in Nelson District Court to the charge of taking marine life for commercial purposes from Kahurangi Marine Reserve. Department of Conservation rangers in a helicopter saw a commercial fishing boat trawling in Kahurangi Marine Reserve on September 23, 2016. It was later established that Wallace

Marie Hill's Christmas wish has been answered. At the weekend, the 23-yearold solo mum of two finally moved into her own place in Nelson South. With two bedrooms, good sun, heating and big backyard - it has everything Marie and her boys, 23-month-old Ashton and nine-month-old Braxton, need for a happy, stable life. It’s the first time Marie has had her own space in almost a year and a half, after living at Ma’s Place – an emergency accommodation provider in Richmond. During that time, Marie has “constantly” been looking for a rental property, but has faced constant rejection. She went on the Social Housing register in November, with no indication of when she would be offered a house. Last week, Nelson Weekly helped Marie put the call out for a house, but the day after the article went to print, she saw she had a missed call on her cellphone from an “unknown number”.

They wanted to know if Marie was interested in viewing a house later that day. “As soon as I got off the phone, my friend drove me to have a look at it. I was not mucking around,” she says. “I was packed and ready to go.” Despite being offered a house, Marie says she had a “great response” from last week’s article. She had three offers to pet-sit and even one complete stranger offering to host her on Christmas day. Now, all Marie needs are a few more household items for her
new home - and the generosity of Nelsonians is already showing. “There have been heaps of people wanting to give me stuff. I’ve been overwhelmed. I was sitting there the other day, just feeling blown away. I was just about to fall on the floor, with all these people offering me things.” This includes a television from the Koha Shed – a luxury that Marie hasn’t been able to enjoy for 16 months. “People keep asking me, ‘what do you want to Christmas, Marie?’ and I tell them, ‘I don’t need anything – I’ve got my house,’” she says. “I don’t have to hunt anymore, it’s a huge relief.”

Jazzfest to impress Local venues will be filled with the sounds of jazz this summer, as the 2018 Nelson Jazzfest comes to town. The annual four-day festival runs from 3 – 6 January and features an impressive line-up of artists across a wide range of venues across the region. Jazzfest director Paul Gilmour says the Founders Park twilight concert on Friday, 5 January, will be the “highlight” of the festival, featuring Wellington City Shake-’Em-On-
Downers, Craig Walters Quartet, Steve Mitchell Band, T-Bone Kate and the Sizzlers, and Nelson Jazz Club Big Band. “There’s a big selection of music. It’s going to be a great day at Founders, with great food. The whole idea of that day is to create a good fun vibe and environment. Modellers Pond gets a clean-up Brittany Spencer The Modellers Pond in Tahunanui is getting a long-awaited clean-up. It’s been years since the pond was emptied and cleared of all the sediment, and president of the Nelson Society of Modellers Nigel Gibbs says it’s about time. “The contractors who have been in there have done a sterling job, it looks really good so
far, we’re really happy with it and now all we’d like is to see some water going back into it.” Nelson City Council communications manager Paul Shattock says the gigantic clean-up is done every couple of years. "A lot of sediment from around the Tahunanui hills ends up there, being a stormwater detention area is one of the primary purposes of the pond so what they’re doing is cleaning out all the build-up from the
last couple of years.” The clean-up comes just ahead of Steam and Cinders 2018, an international competition to be hosted by the Nelson Society of Modellers from January 4-8, 2018. Nigel Gibbs says he is glad to know it will be all cleaned up before the competition. "We’ve got people coming from Australia, the UK, and the United States, as well as all over the country.”

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to safely get your kayak to the water. The most common method is to fit a roof rack to your car which enables you to carry your kayak on the roof. Some styles of kayaks will require a kayak carrier that cradles your kayak and prevents your kayak getting damaged when strapped down.

Despite the fact they were following one of Nelson’s iconic walking tracks, locals taking part in the 2017 Lantern Celebration would be forgiven if they thought they were in a dream. The annual event, which was held on Saturday evening, transforms Nelson’s Botanics into a lantern-filled wonderland, starting with a walk up the Centre of New Zealand track to Sir Stanley Whitehead Park. With this year’s theme being
‘Trail of Dreams’, a number of installations were positioned along the track which were a hit with the public, creating a magical atmosphere that just got better as the sun went down. The Lantern Celebration normally attracts around 2000 people and organisers say this year’s crowd definitely met that target. “I just think it’s so delightful, it’s something a bit different, and I think people love being out in nature, being together as a family and a community,” says Lantern Celebration coordinator Lisa Allan At around 8:30pm, there was
an official lantern lighting ceremony before the Nelson Sambassadors entertained with their infectious drumming and dancing. On the way home, down the track, InsideOut Circus and Physical Theatre performed their brand-new UV and silk show, while LED critters and toadstools appeared from out of the bush, created by Community Art Works. “It just makes your heart feel really warm, seeing everybody having such a lovely time together, coming together as a community and doing something so positive,” says Lisa.

Every few weeks the Nelson Weekly sits down with someone in the community at either Burger Culture or the Vic Brewbar. This time we were lucky enough to catch Santa as he went about his Christmas shopping. We managed to stop him just before he jetted back to the North Pole with his reindeer. So, we asked him all the questions we have always wanted to know. Q: Hey Santa, great to see you. No offence, but I thought you would be … older. A: Well, Santa has the gift of eternity. I have always been and always will be. It's quite tiring but basically, I’m the same person every year. However, sometimes I look older just in for those older kids who believe in me. Often though, I can be quite fresh-faced. Q: Funny you should say that. I’ve got a young boy who is on the brink of not believing. What do you say to him? A: If they don’t believe, what are they going to get in their stockings? You have to believe in Santa to get the presents from Santa and everyone knows I give the best
Q: Why can’t Mrs Claus feature a bit more. A: She is back readying all the elves, making sure they are wrapping all the presents. Q: Do you have any Christmas messages for the children and adults of Nelson? A: For the children, you have to remember to listen to your parents, teachers and adults and be good because I’m still watching. To the parents, you also must be good because I am also watching. There are a lot of you on the naughty and nice list. It can change in the blink of an eye.

Q: It’s quite hot in the Southern Hemisphere, you look a little toasty. How do you handle that? A: Santa is definitely finding it tough in the Summer here. But I’m only here for a couple of minutes and then I’m gone – off to deliver presents to every child in the world. Sometimes I wear my summer outfit which is basically just a red
shirt and red togs. But we also have pretty good air-conditioning on the sleigh. Q: What do you think of Nelson as a Christmas location? A: I would love to spend more time here. I’d love to sit on the beach, but Mrs Claus isn’t a huge fan. She likes white Christmases and candy canes and Christmas lights, which I hear there is quite a lot of here.
Q: What’s your favourite food to be left for you on Christmas eve? A: My favourite thing is homemade fruit mince pies made with love and a little bit of brandy in them. After a couple of billion of those you start to really enjoy them. Q: Do you get Christmas presents? A: Yes, Mrs Claus gets me one every Christmas. I really look forward to it. Q: What is it? A: A Weightwatchers gift card.

Fifeshire Foundation to distribute Christmas packages to needy families Judene Edgar Reporter

Locals looking out for locals is a simple message, but one that the Fifeshire Foundation says is increasingly important at this time of year. The Fifeshire Foundation has been providing relief to individuals and families in financial hardship and domestic crisis since 1993, and is currently running their sixth ‘The Big Give’ Christmas appeal. Christmas is a time when most families are enjoying festive celebrations, planning holidays and giving gifts. But for the individuals and families in our region who are facing hardship, this can be an extremely challenging and stressful time of year. “We want to make a difference to over 300 families facing hardship in the Nelson Tasman region this Christmas,” says Foundation manager Rachel Swarbrick.

and food parcels might sound exciting, it’s also a lot of work, so the staff at Crombie Lockwood volunteered to help. “Every year the staff get to choose
a community project to support,” says branch director Paul Mackay. “It’s our opportunity and our time to give back to the local community.” Previously, the staff have helped paint houses for Habitat for Humanity and joined forces with the Department of Conservation planting young trees at Dominion Flats. This year they will be working in two shifts, sorting through the donations and getting them ready for distribution. “It’s very generous of them,” says Rachel. “As well as helping us pack up, they’ve also donated $2000.” She says that while it’s still “a bit of a waiting game” while they get all the presents from under the Christmas trees, “we’ve already got presents out to 120 families, but I think we’ll be able to help over 300 families”. With the fire well behind them, the PC Systems team cut their 30th anniversary cake during a gathering last Tuesday, in their spacious and modern offices, with a number of current and past customers. Thirty
years also marks the end of an era for Nigel who, after a year-long transition period, is retiring at the end of March and passing the reins over to Neil. The Christmas spirit is spreading through Tahunanui in time for this year’s Carols by the Beach this Thursday. The annual music-filled event is in its fourth year and is set to gather the community for carols just days ahead of the big event. Opening acts Rootstock and Avid Opera will warm up the crowd from 5.30pm at the Beach Reserve.
Then at 7pm, Bryce Wastney and his Carol Collective will lead the audience in some community carol singing. Words will be provided for anyone who wants to join in. Food carts, a sausage sizzle, fresh berries, coffee, and drinks will also be available. St Stephens is spearheading the event with the help of the Tahunanui Community Centre and the Tahunanui Business Association. St Stephens pastor Nathaniel Petterson says it will be a great night for all ages and people are
encouraged to bring blankets, picnics and camping chairs along. "It’s a real community event that we want everybody to be a part of, our musicians are all excited and it’s going to be great, so come along and spread the word.” Carols by the Beach is part of Christmas in Tahuna, a series of community Christmas events. Ann Nighy was living in Auckland and sitting behind a pile of traffic when she decided she needed to get out of there. She went home and told her husband Cliff that it was time to go. After researching many different locations, they took a flight to Nelson. “We landed on the runway, took one breath and thought ‘yes, this will do’.” That was 20 years ago and marked the start of an artistic legacy Ann and Cliff embarked on – commissioning public sculptures for the Nelson waterfront and also becoming heavily involved in the Suter Art Gallery. When Ann arrived in Nelson
20 years ago she did not know anyone. “So I went down to volunteer at the Suter and straight away jumped behind the desk. I stayed there for six years.” She and her husband Cliff, who died in 2012, were also great lovers of sculpture - so they signed up to be on a committee to decide new works for the city. “But nothing happened,” Ann says. “They talked month after month but nothing got done. So I said to Cliff, ‘let’s just do it’. “He was a good man. He always went along with me.” They asked local sculptors to come and meet with them and together they talked about designs and locations. The results of that are three iconic pieces along the waterfront – ‘Sails’ by Mike McMil-
lan, which is currently being repaired and sits next to the Abel Tasman sculpture at Tahunanui, ‘Navigator’ by Tim Wraight, which is next to the Early Settlers sculpture at Wakefield Quay, and an untitled sculpture by Jim Mckay which is also on the waterfront. “Since then we have been championing for the local sculptors. Why do we spend hundreds of thousand on international works when we have all these artists here but are not supporting them?” Ann is leaving Nelson to be closer to her family in Hamilton. “After thinking it over, it is probably the sensible thing to do. We are all getting older.” She also has 12 great grandchildren to wrangle. “I’ll have my very own school up there.”

Heath keen to be King of the Port at street races Andrew Board Reporter

The streets of Port Nelson are a second home to Nelson man Heath Botica, he owns a business at the port and has raced in the Port Nelson Street Races for 15 years. But he's never been "King of the Port" and that's something he'd like to change. "I've won some of the classes here before. But I haven't won a superbike class, I think I've had a few seconds. I would really like to win the formula 1 or the King of the Port race because I've never done that." Heath started his riding career on dirt bikes but has now competed in all but one of the country's street races and has collected the Burt Monroe Memorial Trophy and Pike River Memorial Trophy

"I had a really good year in the Bears Winter series, I entered in four classes and I ended up winning three and finished third in another. That's a six round series
in Ruapuna." So winning a major class in Nelson would cap off a big year for Heath who says street racing seems to suit his style. "I suppose it's a wee bit closer to racing on the dirt, it's a little bit more intense and it seems to suit
my riding style. I seem to go a little better on the street circuits than I do on the big circuits." He says the home crowd also plays a big part. "You notice the crowd when you pull up to the start grid and everyone is really close. "It is cool, especially on the start line there's so many people leaning over the fences and waving at you and everyone really gets a thrill out of it." He says the major reason he keeps competing is the speed. "I think the speed does get you. Doing 260km/hour on the big bikes is a thrill. The speed is a thrill." The 2018 Port Nelson Street Races is being held on January 2. Entry is on the gate on the day and is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 14. Full details are at www. nelsonportraces.co.nz
SportS FOOTBALL: Tasman United lost 3-1 to Auckland City in the latest round of the ISPS Handa Premiership on Sunday. Tasman went 1-0 up but couldn't hold off a classy Auckland side which had just returned from competing at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Tasman are now seventh on the table out of ten teams and next play Canterbury on January 7 in Nelson. CRICKET: Nelson Pine Griffins suffered a heavy loss in its first Hawke Cup game of the season. Batting first, Nelson scored just 179 before Canterbury Country cruised past that to gain a 77 run lead at the half-way mark of the game. In its second innings, Nelson couldn't improve on its first effort, all out for 171, leaving the hosts just 96 runs to win the game, which they did with the loss of five wickets. Top scorer for Nelson was skipper Willem Ludick who finished with 84 in his side's second innings.

College comes close to shock win Andrew Board Nelson College almost pulled off a miracle. Bowled out for just 88 runs on a flat wicket perfect for batting, Nelson College were staring down the barrel of a big defeat in its first -ever club cricket final against an experienced Stoke/Nayland at the Marsden Rec on Saturday. But with ball in hand Nelson College are arguably the best team in the competition and they quickly got to work wedging their way back into the game, taking wicket after wicket. For the hosts, Ben Homan stuck to his task, batting time, and Ryan Edwards scored 48 but it took the overwhelming favourites 29 overs and the loss of eight wickets before they finally hit the winning runs, finishing on 94/8. A relieved Stoke/Nayland captain Brendan Hodgson was thrilled his team hung on. "We bowled and fielded terrifically but we maybe made a few bad decision with the bat trying to get it over and done with. "We probably focused on the outcome not the process and we nearly embarrassed ourselves again." He's referring to the last time these two teams met last month when Stoke/Nayland bowled Nelson College out for just 76 and then lost by 15 runs as they tried to knock the total over quickly. Brendan says Nelson College deserve huge praise for the way they played the final. "This result doesn't take away from the season they've had. If someone had said at the start of the year that they'd make the final you won't have believed it. They took us to the wire today and have set the standard all year." The final ball of the game was smacked for six by Stoke/Nayland's Ili Tugaga into the garden bar of the Turf Hotel, where the players planned to go "hunt" for it as part of their celebrations. The 110 over competition was the first of four that club cricketers will play this season, along with a T20 competition, a 50 over competition and the 50 over Kelvin Scoble competition played with club sides from Marlborough.

Roydon Winstanley nursed a flat tyre in the final race of the New Zealand Stock Car Grand Prix to claim second at the prestigious event. Roydon finished third in his qualifying group to make the 30-car championship field at Stratford Speedway in Taranaki. A second in the opening race got the Nelson lad off on the right foot. That was followed by a seventh in the second, leaving him tied in
1st place going into the last race. But midway through the race he picked up a flat tyre trying to avoid some block cars, ending his charge up the field. The 20-year-old has been racing out of the Palmerston North Speedway club over the past few seasons, commuting from his Nelson home. He says he is lucky to have good support in Palmerston plus the flexibility from his sponsor and employers at Donaldson Civil in Nelson. Roydon started racing stock
cars out of Nelson Speedway, and did some teams racing for the Tasman Thunder, but it was the individual titles that were his priority. The decision was made to head up north to race in bigger fields against the best drivers in the country. He recently finished third at the Robin Pratt Memorial, winning the final heat. Roydon's car is back in Nelson over Christmas to get a bit of a tidy up after a couple of months of racing. He says his next target is the Under 23 title at Stratford in early March.

Jogging into Christmas From the city to the surf, motorists were surprised as they saw Santas, Christmas trees, reindeer, and wrapped presents running in the annual Jingle Bell Jog. Around 100 people and pets dressed up for the 5 km fundraising run/walk from Trafalgar Park to Tahunanui Beach. Age was no restriction as everyone from a 6-month-old baby to an 80-year-old took part, to spread some Christmas cheer and raise money for the Heart Foundation.
Organiser Averil West says the run has been going for around 20 years in Nelson. "It’s always a great day and it's a chance to get away from the stress of Christmas and have a bit of fun and a bit of a laugh.” Averil says she was delighted with everyone’s costumes and how much effort had been put in. "I’m blown away by the costumes, so many more people have put more effort in and people are already talking about ideas for next year’s costume.”
