In its strongest, clearest voice yet, Nelson City Council is expected to tell the government that building the Southern Link to ease pressure on the region’s roading network is its top priority. Successive councils have been noncommittal about the proposed road, which would see the state highway diverted from Rocks Rd and Tahunanui to a new road through the suburb of Victory. The official line of the last council was that it understood the investigation of New Zealand Transport Agency into the road, but neither supported nor opposed it. That was mainly because councillors were split on the issue so the council found itself in a middle ground. But that has changed after a sweep of new councillors, who are supportive of the road, were elected in October. If Mayor Rachel Reese gets the numbers at a full council meeting this Thursday, she will write to NZTA and tell them the region is supportive of their investigation – which is only part of the way complete – and that it sees the project as the number one priority for the region.

In her 25-year career driving buses between Nelson and Richmond, Julie Eddy has come across all sorts of passengers: abusive passengers, funny passengers, kind passengers, passengers that have become friends and even one that is set to become her hus-
band. Julie has just celebrated 25 years as a Nelson bus driver and, although she says she’s had many friendships with her passengers, it’s clear who her favourite is. Brian Gabites started catching the bus from his Stoke home to Nelson, where he works at NBS, four years ago. They got
talking while on the bus and became friendly. Then Julie’s lawn mower broke and Brian offered to lend her his. She gratefully accepted and, after using it, dropped it back to Brian, who suggested dinner. Several months later, the pair announced in front of their families last week that they were engaged to be married.

She says, after about seven years she was given a full time job driving scheduled routes between Nelson and Richmond. Over those two and a half decades she says she’s made some terrific friends. “It’s a very social job, you always talk to people when they come on and my passengers and I have solved some of the world’s problems on the bus,” she jokes. It was very sad.” Other passengers include a woman who brought her live chickens along for the ride in a bag and a drunk man who she picked up from the Rising Sun, who then fell asleep, missed his stop and ended up getting off back at the same pub when it came back to Nelson. She also had a man yell abuse at her for not letting him

Julie also likes to go whitebaiting in Westport and give “little half-pound lots” to some of her older passengers. “But I didn’t do very well this year so I didn’t give much out.” She says the job has changed a lot in her time with the roads much busier, making sticking to the

schedule tough at times. “And there’s always road works somewhere, and that can be challenging to manoeuvre such large buses through.” The introduction of the new Nbus service in 2011 made for much nicer buses to drive she says. “They’re terrific, nice buses and much bigger so we carry a lot more passengers.” Julie says she intends to retire when she turns 65 “in a few years” and take time to travel and spend time with her six grandsons and, of course, her new fiancée. Julie and Brian haven’t set a date for their wedding yet but will still have plenty of daily bus trips together to discuss it.

Recently, one of the exchange students at the school in the mid-90s was back visiting her host family and caught the bus to Nelson. “She was tickled pink that she had the same bus driver, it was very funny.” She says one of the hardest parts of the job was when her favourite passengers pass away. “I went to visit one passenger who I knew was sick. I took her some soup but she didn’t answer the door and I heard her calling out. When I got in she said ‘I was waiting for the angels to come and get me and you came’. After that she was put into the Hospice and she died not long

It is alleged that two teenagers who stole and burnt dozens of cars from Nelson to Wakefield since the beginning of the year were fuelled by methamphetamine. Kodie Reece Russell and Levi Jensen McMaster, both 19, will face charges ranging from theft of cars, arson and possession of methamphetamine – highlighting the growing problem in Nelson with the addictive drug. One of the men has been charged with 31 offences, the second man has been charged with 20 offences. Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly, says the two are alleged to have caused a significant amount of damage in the region. “The destroyed vehicles are valued at approximately $140,000.” While more details cannot be revealed as the men are now before the courts, Mat says crime caused by people using methamphetamine – otherwise known as P – is increasing in Nelson. “Meth is not just a Nelson Bays

In fact, it’s even wider than just New Zealand. But it is driving a lot of crime, particularly vehicle thefts and burglaries – it’s behind a high percentage of that offending.” He says the drugs are coming to Nelson via organised crime groups, mainly gangs. “Nelson’s always had gangs but traditionally it’s been one or two gangs, now we have a different dynamic in that we have a number of different gangs which are present and wearing patches in town, which is a concern. That doesn’t mean there are more gang members, just that they’re more unified.” Other types of crime that police had seen a spike in recently include theft of cars, burglary and domestic violence. says many of those cases can be linked to drug use. “Nelson Bays had a spike in offending mid-to-late last year and it is our belief that the majority of that spike in offending is due to rise of methamphetamine and organised crime.” Over the past 12 months, Nelson Weekly has interview more than half a dozen victims of the type of crime that it is alleged the two arrested men carried out. Many of them were angry that they had been targeted, but also upset. Landlords have also been feeling the brunt of the problem, with many facing huge repair jobs to rental homes that have been contaminated by methamphetamine users. Mat says dealing with meth is a “huge focus” for police.

Nelson Underwater Club members got together to haul rubbish from the bottom of the ocean near Wakefield Quay. With 10 divers and five helpers, the group spent three hours hauling debris and rubbish off the ocean bed including old tyres, scrubbing brushes, pipe and an old bike. “It was an awesome day,” says club member Rob Hawkes. “The sun was shining and the sea was like glass, it was a hot day and we had about 15 of our members involved who spent three hours scouring the coastal berth and around Wakefield Quay, clearing stuff off the bottom. “We’d heard stories of people dropping cellphones, sunglasses and all sorts of things off the coastal pontoon and we got tyres, bits of pipe, scrubbing brushes, boat mats, cans, bottles and a bike, but there was not as much stuff as we thought so it was relatively clean, which was great.” Rob says that while the clean-up was an easy dive for members who hadn’t been in the water over the winter season, there was poor visibility under the water. “The guys could only see 5 or 6 cm in front of their face so a lot of it was done by feel, but they managed to grab some good stuff.” It’s the first time the club have done an underwater clean-up of a section of the port but Rob says he hopes it will be a regular thing. “A lot of ports around the country have been doing it for five or six years and I saw people doing it at the port in Wellington and thought it was a great idea, so decided to give it a crack here and Port Nelson were great in supporting us.”

Southern Link ‘a priority’ FROM PAGE 1 The vote on the mayor’s proposal, that is included on the agenda for this Thursday’s final council meeting of 2016, is likely to cause some division. Councillors Matt Lawrey, Luke Acland, Brian McGurk and Kate Fulton have all gone on the record to say they are against the road, while the other eight councillors could be expected to support it – enough to show council support. Reese says if the council votes for her proposal it will mark a “big shift” from the previous council. “The Southern Arterial Route study is a priority for this region. That’s a different message than the last council. I think it’s a positive shift and it’s responding to the people of Nelson who have told us that they see it as a priority and we have a responsibilty to step up and make it a priority.” Meanwhile, the announcement of the latest stage of NZTA’s investigation has been delayed due to the issues with State Highway 1 after last month’s earthquake.

More money for T-Centre Andrew Board/Kate Russell The costs of the renovated Trafalgar Centre look set to climb even further with councillors asked to approve another $300,000 towards it this Thursday. The extra money, if approved, will be used for “functional improvements”, which is understood to include equipment deemed necessary to attract big events. Altogether, councillors are being asked to approve an extra $317,800. Of that, $30,000 is for the high definition light cabling in the centre’s ceiling, $10,000 for the purchase of aluminium rigging and $50,000 to obtain acoustic advice on how best to implement a theatre space inside the centre. The final $227,800 for “functional improvements” includes kitchen appliances, a cool room, a deep fryer, Wi-Fi hardware, signage, 80 tables, ‘blackout’ curtains, AV data projectors and other pieces. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the money is needed for the centre to be able to attract big events.

Photo: Brittany Spencer. “We have done a business case on potential use at the Trafalgar Centre and the demand is really high, but if we’re going to move it up to that next level we’ve got to put some infrastructure inside it.” Nelson Residents Association member and critic of the council’s handling of the centre’s redevelopment, Kerry Neal, says the proposal is “disgraceful”. “It doesn’t surprise me,
there’s been a continuation of deception when comes to the costings and this is another one. It’s so disgraceful, the whole thing.” In July 2015 the estimate for the Trafalgar Centre redevelopment was $12.9 million. But the council has already approved additional funds totalling $590,000, including $240,000 for the roof replacement in April, and other ‘additional improvements’ in
July including the western corridor extension, north wall cladding and insulation and the north-east corner office facility. Reese admits councillors have a “big call” to make when casting their vote. “I’m not sure how it will go around the council table, I’ll be interested to see what everyone will have to say. But we can’t have it where every time someone wants to hire the Trafalgar Centre they have to hire tables as well.”

Spooner’s Tunnel open again: Spooner’s Tunnel reopened for cyclists and walkers on Wednesday. The tunnel was temporarily closed while engineering assessments and work was done to ensure its stability. Chair of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust Gill Wratt says, they’re delighted that

The Spooner’s Tunnel is the Southern Hemisphere’s longest tunnel used exclusively by walkers and cyclists and was opened as part of the Great Taste Trail in April. The tunnel was temporarily closed for assessment and repairs after a movement in a small crack was identified during a routine inspection in August. Truck takes out Ridgeway power pole: The driver of a truck that smashed into a power pole on Monday has walked away unscathed. “There was a car parked on the other side of the power pole and the truck has come by, clipped the car, and gone straight into the pole,” says Stoke station officer Ryan Hitchcock. The Ridgeway was cordoned off from Arapiki Rd to Marsden Rd as police and two Stoke fire appliances work with the power company to cut off the power.

Exhibition to showcase Claire Prebble Kate Russell This summer’s featured artist at the National WOW Museum is a special one. The work of Claire Prebble, who passed away last year at the age of 30, is being showcased, including her last-ever design, Warrioress of Light, which has been lovingly finished by Alexandra Denton, the mother of Claire’s former fiancé. Claire was a regular contributor to the WOW competition, who in 2004 became the youngest-ever Supreme Award winner. As well as her many WOW achievements, Claire interned for Alexander McQueen, worked for Weta Workshop and contributed to the international fashion industry with her intricate detailing work. Claire had the idea for Warrioress of Light at the age of 19, and Alexandra says she feels “incredibly privileged” to have been able to complete it. “The system of silver wire work
she developed was extraordinary and it took me a while to be able to do what I saw her do so easily,” she says. “She wanted this piece to have a home at The Victoria & Albert museum in London and we are determined to complete her wishes and will be working towards the permanent home there after it has been displayed in the National WOW Museum in Nelson over the summer.” WOW chief executive Gisella Carr says it is wonderful to exhibit Claire’s works of art in her home region. “Claire was an incredible creative, having achieved in her lifetime more than most, “she says. The Claire Prebble exhibition is on until the end of February. Entry is free. It is part of the museum's annual exhibition including the world’s best 2016 wearable art by designers for celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Madonna, as well as Nelson’s own Supreme winner Gillian Saunders.

Jessie Johnston The annual Lantern Celebration will be back again this Saturday, helping to kick off Nelson’s festive season. With last year’s event rained off, the theme is once again ‘Journey to the Stars’ and promises all kinds of creations, installations and music that will entertain locals as they make their way up to the Centre of New Zealand. As well as being the theme for
the lanterns, ‘Journey to the Stars’ also applies to people’s clothing and organisers encourage people to get creative with inspirations such as Start Trek, Star Wars, E.T. and Avatar. “As the first event in our Summer Events programme, the Lantern Celebration is a great, family-friendly event to get us in the festive spirit and kick off the summer season,” says council’s community services committee chair, Gaile Noo-
nan. In preparation for the event, local children took part in a lantern-making workshop on Saturday at the Community Art Works. Another session for those wanting to make their own lantern will be held this Saturday, from 10am until 12pm, at 81 Achilles Ave. In the evening, the Lantern Celebration will take place from 7pm until 10pm. The event is free.

After Tasman District Council rejected the idea earlier this month, Nelson City Council will also be recommending not to pursue Easter Trading - but councillors will have the final vote at this Thursday’s last full council meeting for 2016. Government recently gave local councils the power to decide whether to allow shops to trade on Easter Sunday. Both the Nelson and Tasman councils sought community feedback last month on whether to allow Easter trading, but the results were varied. In the self-selecting online survey, which attracted 1421 responses, 62 percent were opposed to Easter Sunday trading. In the random selection telephone survey of 595 Nelson and Tasman residents, 55 per cent were supportive of Easter Sunday trading. However, if councillors vote to go ahead with the draft policy, there will be another round of public consultation, which is likely to take place in the next few months, with a final decision in time for Easter 2017. Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy says he encouraged 600 stakeholders in the CBD to have their say in the survey, but feelings are mixed amongst retailers. "The feeling out there is that some want it and some don’t – it’s pretty split 50/50," he says. Although he says it could go either way on the proposal, he suggested that it could be to Nelson’s advantage if Richmond shops closed and Nelson's are allowed to open. Meanwhile, president of Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Lees Seymour says they were disappointed the issue wasn’t addressed regionally. "Tasman District Council has missed a great opportunity to engage with, not only their ratepayers to gain a good understanding of what their ratepayers think, but also the ratepayers of Nelson City, on this important issue for the broader community," he says. "The Chamber represents Nelson and Tasmanbased businesses and we take a regional approach when we are considering issues, and we see this as a lost opportunity to act regionally as well." FIRST Union Nelson-Tasman organiser Rachel Boyack said she was “delighted” by the TDC decision, and hopes that Nelson City Council will retain the status quo. "Easter Sunday is one of only three and a half days each year that working people in retail can count on as a day off," she says. "We’re hoping the Nelson City councillors agree this is worth protecting, not reducing. It protects family time for retail workers, who often struggle to get long weekends and holiday time with their families. It makes sense to retain a consistent approach across our region." Nelson City Council's full meeting starts at 9am on Thursday, December 15, with the public forum up first.

St Stephens, the Tahunanui Community Centre, Tahunanui Beach Holiday Park, and the Tahunanui Business Association have teamed up once again to host the festive, family-friendly event which will run from 5-7.30pm on Wednesday, December 21. Part of Christmas in Tahuna, this year’s Carols By The Beach will feature performances from The Salvation Army Band, Contempo Choir, Bryce Wastney and the St Stephens Community Church Band. There will also be plenty to entertain the kids with games, inflatables, face painting, ride-on jeeps and more. Armed with rugs and picnic blankets, the annual event draws a big crowd to the Tahunanui sports fields each year and everyone is invited. Community heroes recognised Locally Owned and Operated
Simon Bloomberg The dedication of 11 of the Nelson-Tasman region's most outstanding volunteers and community leaders was recognised on Friday night when they received a Kiwibank Local Hero Award at a ceremony at Seifried Estate in Appleby. Nominations for the award were accepted from July 1 and September 30 this year, for people whose selflessness and determination has made a difference in the community. A select group of 350 people were chosen from 600 nominations from across New Zealand for the Kiwibank Local Hero Medal including NelsonTasman's Anne-Marie FowkeStayner, Miaolin Li, Paul Le Gros, Ian Watts, Megan Rutledge, Alan Kissell, Mark Wentworth, Gillian Wratt, Henk Visker, Jennifer Amosa and Haden McCrorie. Anne-Marie is a part-time community stroke advisor for the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand while Miaolin Li has been combating racism and is the face behind many valuable cultural projects in the local community as one of the Chinese community leaders in the region and is the coordinator for Speak Out. Nelson lawyer Paul has been in-

Mark is always helping out with local shows and events with his production manager and lighting expertise and is considered the town’s Memorial Hall Saviour after he instigated the upgrade of the local hall. Gillian has more than twenty years of senior executive manage-
ment experience in the science and environmental sectors, including 10 years as CEO-Director of the New Zealand Antarctic Institute and six years as CEO of the $20 million research and consulting business owned by the notfor-profit Cawthron Trust. Henk is the founder and treasurer of the Golden Bay Community Services and Jennifer does so much for amateur theatre in the
region, especially with the Wakefield Country Players. Haden is a professional yacht skipper who brings calm authority and integrity to his role as a Coastguard volunteer. It is his second award this year after he was named as Rescue Vessel Volunteer of the Year at the regional Coastguard awards in October for his heroic role in a yacht rescue off D'Urville Island.

Raffle winner gets the best birthday present Jessie Johnston After months of ticket sales, the winner of the Nelson Tasman Hospice car raffle was finally handed the keys to his new set of wheels on Saturday afternoon. Having purchased tickets at the Nelson Home and Garden Show, Craig Cook had no expectations of winning the major raffle prize, valued at $9000. “I was overwhelmed because we’d been wanting to update our vehicles for a long time and I just couldn’t believe it was us, I thought it might have been a prank,” he says. “It’s just really amazing that this company was able to donate a car to Hospice and at the end of the day, for me, it was more of a donation, I didn’t expect to win anything, I just thought it’s a good cause so I bought a few tickets, but it’s amazing to have won. The products and services being pitched varied from cycle safety gear and chocolate-flavoured coconut milk to beehives and childrens’ storybooks. "Where’s Woolly stood out because they were stars in sales and marketing, and were not happy with just creating a single product. They have looked for multiple ways to extend their product including diversifying in the digital space. A group of students from Nelson College have won The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company of the Year title. The award was announced last week at the Young Enterprise National Awards in Wellington. 'Where’s Woolly' beat more than 600 companies from around the country to claim the title. The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme this year helped 3400 secondary students create and run a small business. Where’s Woolly created a themed children’s book and sold over 1100 copies throughout 25 countries. “We spent so many hours on this business, and it’s all paid off,” said Alistair King, CEO of Where’s Woolly.

New world champion singles lawn bowler Shannon McIlroy will play in the Nelson Centre Pairs tournament this weekend for his Stoke Bowling Club, less than a week after his breakthrough win in Christchurch. The Stoke Club had plenty to celebrate with both Shannon and former member Ali Forsyth claiming gold medals at the World Championships. Stoke Bowling Club president John Marsden says the club committe was meeting on Monday night to discuss a potential celebration for Shannon when he returns. “Shannon’s victory is just amazing,” John says. “We see him on the greens a lot and I’m sure his victory will do a lot for our club and bowls in general here in Nelson." Shannon made good on years of potential by winning the blue riband event, the men's singles 21-17 over Canada's Ryan
Bester, while Ali skipped the men’s fours to a 23-4 demolition of Australia. "It's pretty surreal right now growing up playing bowls, it's what dreams are made of," Shannon says. "After 25 years in the game, I think all those days wagging school and going down to the bowling club have paid off," says the 29 year-old who celebrated his 300th cap with the victory. Meanwhile, it was a little superstition helped Ali keep his cool in the men's fours win. "I was getting hot with my jacket on but the one time I took it off this week I started playing rubbish. "To hold such a quality team to such few shots is the stuff you dream about and I can't believe it's happened to be fair." United Bowling Club's Jo Edwards had to settle for silver after losing the women's pairs final with Angela Boyd 16-15 on Sunday.

Waimea Toi Toi secured a place in the final with a week to spare, while rain on Saturday washed away Nelson College’s chance of pipping Stoke-Nayland for the other berth after all club cricket was abandoned and the points shared. Waimea Toi Toi will go in as favourites as they are undefeated in the competition. They have also scored the most runs in the competition and conceded the least. The teams have met once before, with Waimea Toi Toi winning by one run after defending 161 thanks to four for 28 from opening bowler Jon Routhan. Their other match was rained out. However, it’s not all one-way traffic when individual player statistics are looked at. Lash chasing pro referee dream Locally Owned and Operated
Jacob Page Nelson's top rugby referee Mike Lash says his brother James probably poses the toughest challenge to him when he's the man with the whistle. The 29-year-old continues to chase his dream of being a fully professional referee and is just one rung away. "It's not something that once you're in you're in, you just try to do enough to keep improving and getting better." Mike currently referees Mitre 10 Cup, with four matches this season in his 27 first class appearances. He's also been an assistant referee for Super Rugby, controlled a preseason Ranfurly Shield challenge and was in control of the secondary schoolboys test between New Zealand and Australia. Mike refereed his first game of rugby in 2003 when he took charge of an under-10s match between Stoke and Nelson. Nelson College's Peter Grigg believed Mike had the attributes to be a good referee and encouraged him to take a course, which he

did. Mike continued to play for the Nelson College second XV before injuries forced him out. Mike says grabbing a whistle allowed him to stay involved in the game he loves. He is a helicopter pilot by trade, but is the Referees Manager at the Tasman Rugby Union as he chases a professional contract. "I'll be able to fly helicopters until I'm 60, but I won't be able to be a referee when I'm
that old. Sometimes, not getting a mention as a referee is the best sign that you've done a good job. "We have 1800 referees in this country and only seven of them do it professionally - the rest are doing it for the love of the game."
He says officiating his brother James has had its moments. "He knows I'm not going to make his life easier or harder and he's the same to me. The first time I ever refereed him, he was playing first-five, chipped the ball over
the defence, regathered and then chipped the ball over the winger who was coming across and got it back and scored under the posts. "I awarded the try and he just turned and winked at me and said 'that's pretty good, isn't it?'� Mike says the toughest areas of the game to get right are the tackle ball and the scrum. "I've made a tackle, been in a ruck, but I've never been in a scrum. "I've been lucky this year to have [former All Blacks hooker] Mark Hammett and [All Black prop] Kane Hames to talk too.� He says supporter-abuse is rare and he looks at it as misguided passion in the heat of the moment. He says he's made mistakes and generally it's best to just own up. and the players respect the honesty. "Being a referee is great fun and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to stay involved in rugby but wants to get away from being tackled every weekend."
