Neighbours of a new housing development in The Wood are concerned that the project threatens to disrupt the unique nature of

their street after new hazard regulations forced the build to start more than a metre off the ground. The project, which has been ongoing for almost two years, recently started to take shape. But there were eyebrows raised when builders started putting in large

wooden poles and retaining walls around its perimeter. “It seems really weird,” says Nick Kemplen who lives down the road. “It’s right in the middle of Weka St. “It will be a bit of an eyesore.” The build, which will feature six,

two-storey homes, looms large for Georgina Pattullo, who owns the Tasman Bay Backpackers across the road and lives directly next door. “It’s hideous, isn’t it,” she says. “I’m disappointed. I want to live in a little street with little houses. I’m

not against moving forward, it’s just looking forward in the right way.” The project must be built more than a metre off the ground due to Nelson City Council’s new flood hazard information which

Flood plan raises housing stakes FROM PAGE 1 projects flood risk for the year 2100. According to the council’s mapping, vast swathes of the city are at risk of flooding based on a 1 per cent “annual exceedance probability” rainfall event, also known as an ‘AEP’. A one per cent AEP event is a flood that has a one per cent chance of occurring or being exceeded every year, and is sometimes known as the one in 100-year flood. The new mapping means any new build in the flood areas, which include parts of Stoke, Nelson North, Enner Glynn, Nelson South, Atawhai and The Wood, may need to be raised. Modelled scenarios include both present and predicted future rainfall intensities, and different amounts of

sea level rise between 0 and 1m. “It has massive implications,” said one neighbour who did not want to be named. “It’s certainly causing a lot of people to scratch their heads. Bureaucracy gone mad?” Council’s group manager strategy and environment Clare Barton said any new development in the flood hazard zone will need to be built to a certain height, but the required height may vary depending on the site. “They may not all be required to reach the same height as this development, depending on the flood modelling specific to the site.” Nicole Lewandowski, who is the daughter of the developer Andrzej Lewandowski, says the project was conceived in 2015, before the new hazard plan came into being. “We didn’t think it was going

to happen and other building companies didn’t realise. It’s definitely put the costs up.” Nicole says she was aware of neighbours’ concerns as the Pattullos raised them through the formal consent process. “They were concerned for their daylight. It will affect them a bit, but we still went through the requirements.” As for Georgina, she says she didn’t have the energy to fight it any longer. The next step was Environment Court. “We would have to fork out money to keep going.” Georgina says not only is the development going to block her sun and look “awful”, but it also pointed to future implications of building in the city. Much of Nelson is also in the projected flooding area. “It’s going to have a huge impact.”

After more than years, the ladies from Inner Wheel are hanging up their songbooks. They have been bringing musical entertainment to a lucky bunch of locals for 32 years but had their final performance at Trolove House in Stoke on November 29. “Someone approached the Rotary Club of Nelson, looking for some singers to entertain the patients at Ngawhatu Hospital because they thought that music might be therapeutic for them,” says original Inner Wheel member Audrey Harte. “I said I had a little Yamaha keyboard and I offered to go along and play and put together some old-time songs that they might remember.” So in 1985, a group of around 15 ladies went out to Ngaio Villa and played for the female residents once a month. “When we went into Braemar, before the group community homes were all open, the Inner Wheel group followed us there,” says Trolove House support staff member Annette Taylor. “From Braemar, they came here because many of the service users were from Ngawhatu, so they were quite

Photo: Jessie Johnston. used to these ladies coming in.” Each month, local community homes would all be notified of the upcoming visits so residents could be brought out to hear the ladies play. “It gives the residents something to look forward to. Many don’t get the opportunity to go out much,” says Annette. Over the years the group has grown smaller and, while they’re sad to be saying fare-

well, they certainly have some wonderful memories. “I’ve decided my eyesight’s not too good, the notes keep jumping around and it’s difficult carting the heavy gear around,” says Audrey. “I’ve realised maybe 32 years is a pretty good time. We’ve had a lot of fun and enjoyment together.” The final performance began with Christmas carols and ended with some old-time tunes.

All Marie Hill wants for Christmas is a home for her family. The 23-year-old solo mum of two has been looking for a rental property for almost a year and a half, but has faced constant rejection. During that time, she and her children, 23-month-old Ashton and 9-month-old Braxton, have been living at Ma’s Place in Richmond. The emergency accommodation provider has been a stable roof over their heads - but now they have until February to find their own place. Nelson Weekly told Marie’s story back in August, as part of the ‘Safe and Sound’ series, but four months on, Marie says “things are worse”. She says she is competing against up to 20 other people at rental viewings, and has even taken her plea to the Prime Minister and former Minister of Housing and Nelson MP Nick Smith. “I just got to a point where I

Marie went on the Housing New Zealand list last month, but she has been given no indication of how long the waiting list is. She has been told she is a “high priority”, but her ranking could go up or down depending on who else goes on the list. “They have given me a score and told me that my ranking

is really high, but I don’t know if that’s even going to work.” Marie also scours Trade Me every day and has put the call out through her social media networks several times, but it hasn’t got her anywhere. “I’ve done everything that I can think of, but there are just so many people looking,” she says. “It’s not getting better and there are many who are in the same situation as me. “Bad credit lets you down,

children, the benefit – even though it’s money coming in people still don’t look at you.” Marie says she is looking for a 2-3 bedroom house in the $200 - $400 price range and she is open to living in Richmond, Stoke or Nelson. With Christmas fast approaching, and her eldest son’s second birthday next month, Marie dreams of giving her kids a home to create memories in. “We won’t be doing much for Christmas this year and I have to have my son’s birthday party at my mum’s house. Last year we had it at my step-dad’s house,” says Marie. “It’s things like that, which are hard. I want to be settled and I don’t want to keep living like this. I’d like to have my own space and fly the coop, but you can’t do that when you’ve got nowhere to go.”

NEWS Railway Reserve goes Green: The festive spirit came to the Railway Reserve last Friday when the Nelson branch of the Green Party set up a ‘Christmas Cheer Station’ at the top of the Bishopdale Saddle. Members and supporters handed out drinks and food to people commuting along the reserve by bike and foot. “We wished them Merry Christmas, gave them something to eat and drink, and thanked them for cycling and walking,” organiser Matt Lawrey said. Carols for a cause: Nelson Theatrix has teamed up with the Nelson Lioness club, to stage a Christmas fundraiser concert to support new mothers. ‘A Very Broadway Christmas Party’ is on this Saturday, December 16, at 3pm at the Nelson Musical Theatre. The concert will feature 12 performers singing Christmas songs both new and old. There will also be spot prizes, cake, and a raffle. Tickets start at $5 for kids, $20 for adults and $40 for families. Refugee hits the open road Kate Russell

Former refugee Nay Reh says the best thing about getting his drivers licence was being able to take his wife to the hospital when she went into labour with their third son last month. Nay Reh, who comes from Myanmar, was one of 12 people to graduate at the Open Road driver training prize-giving last Thurs-

day night. “I feel very happy and lucky because I got my licence just before my wife gave birth,” says Nay Reh. He also says he is now able to drive his two eldest sons, aged five and six, to the beach, park and to visit friends. But he says the greatest benefit is being able to help others in his community. “My community is very happy

as many don’t have cars and they are new here, so we can help with things like their shopping.” Nay Reh says this includes delivering 20kg bags of rice to them and sometimes 40kg bags in the winter. Before getting his licence, the family had to walk or catch rides with friends or their support volunteer, who has been guiding them since they arrived in Nelson a year ago. The Nelson Refugee Driver Training Programme

was rolled out in Nelson in March last year and is delivered to former refugees by Red Cross. Local volunteers spend a few hours a week, over 12-16 weeks, as mentor instructors. There are two graduations per year, with 32 new Nelsonians gaining their restricted licences so far this year. Refugee Driver Training coordinator Margo Ruhen says they are always looking for more mentors. “It’s a great way to give back to the community and a great sharing of

cultures,” she says. Mentors need to be over 21 years old, have had their full New Zealand drivers licence for more than two years and a clean driving record. The next programme starts in February with the group induction on 31 January. Hot and bothered at the great toy sale After news that local toyshop went out of business owing hundreds of thousands of dollars, Charles Anderson thought he would head along to the liquidation auction to witness the pre-Christmas rush. They streamed in, along with the heat. They perused the walls lined with Barbies, stuffed toys, Lego, board games, bikes and boards. Christmas was coming, wallets were opening. On Sunday at 9am, viewings at the recently out-of-business Toyzone went underway. The Buxton Square shop owed more than $250,000 and, as part of a liquidation sale, everything had to go. Everything – the fridge, the safe, the stands and display fittings. Even the security system was up for grabs. And yes, also the toys. “I won’t tolerate shoplifting,” auctioneer John Walker told buyers outside the store. “If anyone is caught it’s going to be the police dealing with you, not me.” Parents held their children’s wandering hands a little tighter. New Zealand doesn’t do Black Friday – the crazed, panicked rush that American shoppers engage in the day after Thanksgiv-

ing. Prices are slashed, and stampedes ensue. There was no such crush on Sunday, but you still had to be slightly insane to want to stand in an overheated room, in close proximity to adults, screaming children and an ever-energetic auctioneer bent of selling everything but the kitchen sink. It was a democratising experience – city councillors and business executives stood side by side with mothers and fathers cradling toddlers, all desperate for a cheap deal. “The heat is driving me up the wall,” one shopper lamented while desperately trying to fan herself with her auction number. “Jeepers.” The auctioneer said he would take the buyers through the whole store methodically. It would take several hours. “I hope you enjoy the journey.” And then the first items started selling. There were electric mini cars, drones, blocks and trains. There were soft toys, baby mobiles and huge packs of crayons. There were buyers of all sorts – vendors looking for a good deal, parents looking for a better one. In some cases, whole shelves were packaged up into one sale, leaving the eventual buyer a little shell-

Everything in the store was sold – all 600-odd lots. From the misery of business failure, at least there might be a small light of Christmas joy – even if that meant giving away two extra Frozen dolls and three themed plate and cup sets.

How on earth will the traffic flow with a pedestrian crossing between two sets of lights so close. What is wrong with using the lights by the Turf? At least it would be controlled and much safer. For one local family, a $2000 donation has made a priceless difference. Three years ago, Gabby Stephens, 7, was diagnosed with dyskeratosis congenita, a rare degenerative genetic disorder that may see her not live past a teenager. She is the only remaining person with the disease in New Zealand. A small respite was attending the Dyskeratosis Congenita Family Education Summit in the United States. The family attended last year but the cost of getting there is prohibitive. During the camp, connections are made with families dealing with the same disease. “The camp is incredible,” said Gabby’s mum Megan. “Within 24 hours [my husband] Andrew said, ‘we’re going to have to rethink out finances, so we can come back’.” Megan said they couldn’t imagine not going. On Friday they received some good news – the Mike Pero Foundation would help get Gabby and her family to next year’s summit in Maine. Mike Pero franchise owner Craig Hamilton says, as soon as he heard about Gabby’s story he knew they had to do something. “They applied through our foundation online, so we had a look at

Lanterns ready for annual celebration Jessie Johnston Local children got creative on Saturday morning, creating their own special lantern to take with them to this year’s Lantern Celebration. Every year, around 2000 people come together to enjoy the Lantern Celebration, which transforms Nelson’s iconic Botanical Reserve, into a lantern-filled wonderland. The theme for 2017 is ‘Trail of Dreams’, and while that applies to the lanterns, organisers also encourage people to dress up as their favourite dream character, or just wear their pyjamas. As people make their way up the Centre of New Zealand, Te Manawa World Choir will be performing, with a number of installations set up for people to look at. There will be an official lantern lighting cer-

emony at Sir Stanley Whitehead Park, before InsideOut Circus and Physical Theatre perform their brand new UV and silk show as people make their way back down the track. “If the weather is nice it’s such a lovely evening up there with the views of the city, the sun going down and a wonderful atmosphere with music and entertainmentit’s a really unique Nelson event,” says chair of the Community Services Committee, councillor Gaile Noonan. Another lantern making workshop will be held the day of the Lantern Celebration, Saturday, December 16. The workshop runs from 10am until 12pm, at Community Art Works on Achilles Ave, and is $2 per person. The Lantern Celebration is free and will run from 7pm until 10pm that evening.

Summer Beach Bus is coming back The Summer Beach Bus service that started last summer will be back this year. It starts on Wednesday 27 December and will run through until Tuesday 6 February 2018. The Beach Bus service will be in the awesome double-decker bus and runs continuously throughout the day between Tahuna Beach Holiday Park and Nelson i-SITE, with one stop at Tahuna Beach in each direction. The bus leaves Nelson i-SITE on the hour, and leaves Tahuna Beach Holiday Park on the half hour. The first bus of the day will leave the i-SITE at 10am and the last bus will return from the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park at 6.30pm. There will be no service at 1pm to give the driver a break. The cost is just $2 for adults and $1 for children each way. Keep an eye out for the Summer Beach Bus these holidays, the bestest, fastest, funnest and cheapest way to town and the beach this summer.

Light your lantern! The Lantern Celebration is on this Saturday from 7pm – 10pm at the Centre of New Zealand. This free, fun, family event involves a magical walk up the hill, encountering ethereal installations and surreal performances as you go. Once at the top, you can marvel at the sunset, listen to the band and join the lantern lighting ceremony. Bring a picnic and warm clothing. You can head along to Community Art Works in Achilles Ave on Saturday morning from 10am – 12pm for a fun lantern making workshop. It’s just $2 per person. Remember all lanterns must be battery powered

to avoid fire risk. If it rains, the event will be held the following evening, Sunday 17 December. This is just one of the awesome upcoming summer events, including the New Year’s Eve Countdown, Summer Movies Al Fresco, Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Nelson Buskers Festival and so much more. Street Ambassadors back on the beat Nelson’s Street Ambassadors are now back on the streets in their distinctive orange vests. Look out for them on weekend evenings, from 10pm – 4am, as the summer party season warms up. Sally Wood of Youth and Community Works which delivers the service on Council’s behalf says, “Essentially it’s about skilled community-minded people helping local people and visitors to the region. Our Street Ambassadors work in pairs delivering safety messages, offering advice and assistance when needed and intervening with the aim to prevent incidents. “In previous years, the presence of the Street Ambassadors has reduced anti-social behaviour, conflict and aggression while working towards the vision of keeping Nelson a safe place for everyone to enjoy after dark,” Sally says. Street Ambassadors have a strong partnership approach with other late night services. They keep in touch via cell phones and radios with Police, Ma-ori

Street Ambassadors are qualified to administer basic first aid until St John arrives and also liaise with door staff and safe late night transport options such as taxis and the Late Late Bus. Nelson City Council’s Community Services Committee Chair Gaile Noonan says, “The Nelson Street Ambassadors have been operational in our CBD since 2004. They’ve developed a good rapport with both young people and adults who spend time in the city centre on weekend evenings. “They also help our visitors with useful Council information, facilities and services, as well as promoting events taking place across the district.” The Street Ambassadors will be on the streets every weekend until March 2018.

It’s a great time to reflect on what you’ve achieved in 2017 and look forward to what 2018 will bring. I especially want to mention all the volunteers who work tirelessly throughout our community, improving the lives of so many. The work you do is invaluable, essential and often unrecognised, so thank you on behalf of all those you help every day. While many of us are able to relax and enjoy a holiday break, spare a thought for all those who have to work to keep our city ticking over. Your sacrifice is appreciated by locals and visitors alike. I want to remind everyone to take care, on our roads, on the water or wherever the holiday break takes you. Please stay safe and let’s all be ready for an exciting and fulfilling 2018. Trapping workshop gives pest control a boost The Top of the South Pest Trapping Workshop, held at Saxton Netball Pavilion on 3 December, saw more than 130 participants learning about best practice in trapping predators to protect our native birds and fauna. The day started with guest speakers Nicola Toki, Threatened Species Ambassador for the Department of Conservation (DOC); Myfanwy Emeny, from Wellington City Council, and Wendy Sullivan, Predator Free 2050 ranger for the Top of the South, who each gave inspiring talks about what needs to be done to protect our native birds from invasive pest species. After morning tea, the talks moved to focussing on best practice in trapping invasive predators. Tristan Rawlence, DOC Science Advisor, talked about how to monitor pest populations and gauge the effectiveness of your predator control programme. Nick Poutu, DOC Technical Adviser, gave a rundown of the science behind predator control best practice. Nik Joice, DOC Senior Ranger Nelson Lakes, talked about how predator biology can be used to enhance the effectiveness of a trapping programme and Grant Harper, biodiversity consultant, talked about how to enhance bird populations in Nelson. After lunch participants attended four practical

workshops on different types of traps, trap maintenance, how to make sure non-target species like weka don’t get caught in traps, online tools for recording trapping results and tools for monitoring results of predator work – such as tracking tunnels and chew tracking cards. Groups from Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough then spent some time talking about the specific requirements for their areas and how to address the pest problem locally. The technical talks from the day will be soon available in video format on the Nelson Nature website, nelsonnature.nz. The event was made possible with support from Nelson City Council’s Nelson Nature Programme, Department of Conservation, the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, Tasman District Council and Predator Free NZ. nelsonnature.nz

High fire risk – take care in reserves

The hot, dry summer means the fire risk in Council Reserves is already reaching extreme levels.

Council and Nayland College have worked together on an initiative to make two of the college’s tennis courts available for public use outside of school hours, starting from mid-December.

Following a few basic rules can help keep people, animals and property safe.

Council has supplied two mobile net systems that the College will manage, so anyone who fancies a game of tennis is welcome to come along after 3.30pm on weekdays; during weekends, school holidays and public holidays. Nayland College is planning a major upgrade to a Tiger Turf playing surface in April next year and the arrangement for public use will continue after that, provided no unexpected issues arise. Sports and Recreation Committee Chair Tim Skinner says “We’re delighted to have joined

Council has started its summer water quality monitoring programme, to ensure it can provide information to river and beach users on where is good to swim over the warmer months.

There’s still time to buy your wood for winter at the best price available.

The best place to go for up-to-date results is the LAWA (Land Air Water Aotearoa) website, which hosts water quality data for the whole country. The LAWA ‘Can I swim here’ module is currently being updated and the revised page will be launched before Christmas. Visit lawa.org.nz for more information. Local toxic algae results are also available on Council’s website at nelson.govt.nz/toxic-algae. Building and Resource Consent statutory clock stops over Christmas Building and resource consent applications, including: Resource Consents, Building Consents (BC), PIMs, Code Compliance Certificates (CCC), Certificate for Public Use (CPU), etc. go on hold for the Christmas closure on 20 December 2017 and re-start on 11 January 2018. These dates are prescribed in the Resource Management Act and Building Act. Some processing may continue over the holiday

period, but these days are not counted as part of the statutory allowance. The Land Information Memorandum (LIMS) clock stops on 25 December 2017 and re-starts on 15 January 2018. LIMS have a 10 day statutory clock outside of these dates. Building Inspections also go on hold over the holiday period. Building Inspections finish at 12pm on 22 December, and restart at 1pm on 3 January.

MEETINGS Nelson Host Lions Club take on planting project An untouched section of Marsden Valley Cemetery will be transformed into a woodland park, thanks to a commitment from the Nelson Host Lions Club. The Club has signed an agreement with Council that will see them plant a variety of trees in the section overlooking the new homes further up the valley. Although the land is part of cemetery, it is too steep for burials so Council has welcomed interest from the Club to improve it. This is a legacy project for the Nelson Host Lions Club, to mark the centenary of the Lions organisation worldwide. Detailed plans for the planting are being worked through with the first trees expected to be planted in the middle of next year when weather conditions are more suitable.

Have your say on the future of transport The Nelson Regional Land Transport Plan (NRLTP) 2015 – 2021 has had a mid-term review and the revised Plan will be released for feedback from the community on Friday 15 December. The Plan prioritises the transport projects for the next seven years and seeks funding for them. The key projects included are: • The Nelson Southern Link Investigation to better understand the appropriate response to increasing levels of congestion and forecast growth, in tandem with the Rocks Road walking and cycling project. • An extension to Hill Street to connect with Saxton Road to enable residential growth. • A partnership project with our Tasman neighbours and the Transport Agency that considers the best form and function and hierarchy of the Richmond and Stoke south transport network. • Improvements to the safety and resilience of the SH6 Blenheim to Nelson route. The document also includes the Nelson Regional Public Transport Plan (NRPTP) which covers the public transport service provided. Submissions are invited on both concurrently. Following feedback and reviews of the existing services, some changes and improvements are proposed in the Plan. These changes, at a total cost of in the order of $225,000 per annum, are identified below:

• Student/CS card fare reduction – children over 5 years, students and community service card holders will all pay the same fare. • Increased weekend services – buses would run later on weekend afternoons. • Revised Stoke Loop service introduced – operating off peak and via a route based on community feedback. • Slight alterations to local services to accommodate the revised Stoke Loop service. Nelson Regional Transport Committee Chair Paul Matheson says “We are awaiting the new Government Policy Statement on transport, but have to proceed with consulting on our Plan now. Early advice is that what we are proposing is on track with Government priorities and we will still have an opportunity to make any adjustments needed as a result of submissions received during deliberations.” From Friday the full Draft Regional Land Transport Plan, including the Regional Public Transport Plan 2018, will be available from the Council Customer Service Centre, Trafalgar Street or the Nelson, Tahunanui and Stoke Libraries. You will also be able to view a copy on line at nelson.govt.nz, (search = Regional Land Transport Plan). Submissions will open on Friday 15 December 2017 and close at 5pm Friday 9 February 2018.

If your collection day is usually Tuesday it will be picked up on Wednesday and so on throughout the week. This changed collection schedule will continue through the New Year week and return to normal collection on Monday 8 January 2018.

Amanda’s role will focus on communicating with clubs, schools and water users; educating people about safer boating; managing compliance on the water with the Navigation Safety Bylaw, and working with the boating community to ensure people have permits in place for any hot work (welding, grinding etc.) they may be doing over the summer. Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says that Amanda has a background in education but has also spent her life around boats and on the water. “We’re delighted to welcome Amanda to the team, and I know that our boating community will appreciate the work she is doing to make Nelson a safer place to be out on the water.”

Church is to create a more modern Italian café, something that you would find nowadays in the north of Italy, which includes vegan meals and other options like gluten and dairy free.” Iain also has a miniature showroom instore, showcasing Caffe Molinari coffee beans and other coffee essentials that you can purchase for brewing that perfect cup of Italian coffee at home. Caffe Roma on Church officially opened its doors to the public on Saturday, December 2, and the team has been thrilled with the response. “We’ve had great feedback and repeat customers which is always key at the start,” says Jeni. “Our coffee is quite different to what Kiwi’s make, it’s a lot stronger and people are loving it.” You’ll find the Caffe Roma on Church team, and their fantastic food and coffee, at 12 Church St, off Hardy St, in the centre of Nelson. They’re open from 8am until 5pm, Monday to Saturday. For Iain, it was a question of why not? “All of us have an absolute passion for the products we sell and coincidentally, they’re both Italian,” he says. “The George Clooney club has denigrated the quality of coffee that is available, whereas we only import the absolute top end in coffee products.” Coffee and gelato, amongst other products, are historical Italian industries, “Caffe Molinari, who I deal with, has been in business since 1804 and that’s certainly not their oldest producer of coffee in Italy, so you’ve got years of experience and passion,” says Iain. “Gelato Roma and myself share the same desire to bring these quality products to Nelson.” The last piece of the puzzle was Jeni Bosselman, who came into the

partnership after finding the business on TradeMe. “I’ve been working in hospitality for years and I’ve managed a number of restaurants and bars, so I was ready for that next step up and it’s just something different for me to learn,” says Jeni. With each partner bringing their expertise to the café, together they have created a fantastic new business that serves up everyone’s favourite Italian food items. To make their gelato, Yuri and Daniela source the majority of their ingredients from local suppliers including Wangapeka milk, which is also used in their coffees. Their cabinet is stocked with beautiful Italian pastries and other sweet creations, while their breakfast and lunch menus feature Italian classics such as pasta, gnocchi and pizza. “Gelato is usually served with something else, so when creating an Italian experience here in Nelson, we decided we needed to include food as well,” says Daniela. “The idea behind Caffe Roma on

Fun day fund raiser for Damin Jessie Johnston

Damin Ching is one step closer to his “life changing” surgery after a successful Family Fun Day fund raiser on Sunday. The event was held at Broadgreen Historic House and included a range of food, activities, games and entertainment for the whole family, with proceeds going towards the $120,000 required to get Damin to St Louis Children’s Hospital is America. Damin has right side hemiplegia, a type of cerebral palsy which causes him to have extremely high muscle tone and lack of control in the affected side of his body. But a rare operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy, which involves cutting the nerve fibres in the spine that the brain uses to stiffen the limbs, could give the Nayland Primary School pupil a new lease on life. Damin’s parents Mikayla McDonald and Brandon Ching were amazed at the number of people who attended the event and wish to thank everyone who came along. “We’re just lost for words, we really appreciate everyone’s support, we didn’t think it would be as bit as what it was,” says Mikayla. “It was a great community turn out.” Mikayla says they’re still calculating how much the Family Fun Day raised for Damin’s operation, and will have further fund raising events to come, including a quiz night in February. Comedy show of your dreams Improvisers Brendon Bennetts and Criss Grueber are self-declared experts on dreams. As “The Dream Team”, they will use the full power of spontaneously-created theatre to investigate, interpret, and fix the audience’s dreams. The pair have been pushing the boundaries of improvised comedy with Christchurch’s Court Jesters for a combined total of 20 years. The new show comes hot on the heels of another recent successful show for Bennetts in Wellington, “The Improv Show at the End of the World”, which was produced as part of the New Zealand Improv Festival. Ghost Light Theatre manager Debbie Brooks says “The

Dream Team” is a show of joyfully improvised chaos, where dreams can become reality. They are joined by local improvisers Laura Irish and Roger Sanders from The People’s Republic of Improv. “The Dream Team” conveniently coincides with Nelson’s annual Lantern Celebration on the Saturday evening, this year’s theme being “Trail of Dreams”. “The celebrations begin with a sprinkling of sleep dust as you make your way up the hill to the Centre of New Zealand. Along the track you will discover ethereal installations and surreal performances,” Debbie says. “Once at the top of the hill, listen to the band, watch the sun set and join in

the lantern-lighting ceremony.” She says, when it’s time to sleepwalk down the hill, locals can make their way to Ghost Light Theatre at 146 Bridge St for more dreamlike entertainment with the start of The Dream Team placed at 10 pm. These are Monique Beers-White’s memories of a 4000km road trip through Namibia. They are displayed on a wall at Arty Nelson on Trafalgar St. Monique went on the trip with her husband Martin after the organiser of a 4 by 4 tour got a last-minute cancellation. Monique says the country is very desert-like and is famous for its diamonds. However, as the diamonds dried up, many villages that popped up to mine the precious stones have been left abandoned. “It leaves these amazing scenes of houses with sand just pouring out of

them.” Monique says she has always taken photos of her travels, but this is the first time she is exhibiting. The exhibition is on until Christmas.

TRIATHLON: Rain, rough seas and a very low tide didn't look like a recipe for a successful family triathlon, but 78 competitors aged from seven to 72 smiled their way through Sunday's event at Rabbit Island. The team of Robert Sheridan and his sons Josh and Kalani led the way, with Marlborough teenager Connor Guillemot putting in a brilliant individual performance for second. The event involved a short triathlon, starting with a 200m swim in very rough seas, a 6km bike ride and then a 1km run. Justin “Red Feathers” Hearne hasn’t had much time to rest after retiring from stock car racing -- his two boys are keenly following in his footsteps. Raiden, 15, and Blake, 12, are spinning plenty of laps at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway in their Youth Ministocks. Raiden picked up his maiden win a few weeks ago, while Blake has completed his mentor programme for new drivers and is now free to race at other tracks. Justin has built Blake’s car over winter and gave Raiden’s an overhaul. The structural engineer from Trinders also looks after the steelwork on a few other drivers' cars as well.
