Karen Targett is 52-yearsold, partially deaf and lives on Trafalgar St, not in one of the buildings or homes, but on the pavement in front of Farmers. Karen, who goes by her middle name “Janine”, is one of several homeless people now living on the main street. It is an issue that Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese is calling an “escalating situation” that is “testing Nelsonians’ patience”. After living in a mental health unit, and then Franklyn Village before being asked to leave, Janine now finds herself sleeping on a mattress out in the cold, surrounded by her few possessions. “I’m on the street but I have food in my tummy and that is a lot.” Janine is on a living support benefit and received $275.79 in her bank account last week.

“When you look at that amount you think ‘wow, that’s a lot’, but when you’re renting, the cheapest place is about $150 per week, you take that away and you’ve still got to pay for food, transport costs, washing, and then if you want to have a smoke or a bit of a social life, well, I don’t think you’ll manage much.” Janine says Nelsonians are mostly kind and some take the time to sit down and have a written conversation with her. “The people walking by are not too bad, a couple of people have given me money and I’ve put it all to good use, I’ve gotten myself something to eat and I’ve bought tights, socks and gloves.” Janine says she does get verbal abuse hurled her way but she ignores it. “A lot of people will say something rude but if they can’t be bothered to write it down then I can’t hear them, so it doesn’t matter.”

Lewis says that while homelessness is not a new issue in Nelson, he has been seeing a rise. “On Wednesday night, there were five other people out here with me, some are regulars but most come and go, it is sad that more people are living on the street but the sad thing is that we allowed this to happen.” Mayor Rachel Reese says she has “deep concern” over the situation. “This is having an impact on both retailers and the public in this area … Nelson people’s tolerance is being tested. People should not be in a situation where they are concerned about their safety. We are looking at all avenues to try and expedite our bylaw process to help resolve this situation in a

Vigilance needed over increased dog attacks Kate Russell Gee the German Pointer gets nervous when she passes another dog on a walking trail. Gee was attacked by two dogs up the Maitai last September. She underwent two surgeries, had a 30cm wound with a drain in it for two weeks and needed around the clock surveillance. Her owner, Francesca Harris, says nearly one year on Gee has made a full recovery physically, but she can still get anxious around other dogs. The offending dogs and their owner were eventually identified, and it turned out Gee wasn’t their first victim. Thanks to Francesca, the dogs have been classified as menacing by Nelson City Council and must wear muzzles. “I feel better knowing I’ve done all I can to protect others against future attacks from these animals,” she says. According to the council’s dog control activity reports, there are more dogs attacks in Nelson than ever before. There are 5770 registered dogs in Nelson, with 52 attacks on animals and 34 attacks on humans being reported in the last year. Just last month, a two-yearold was attacked by a dog in

All it took for Herrie ten Oever to be able to see 100 million light years into the deep dark reaches of space was some wood, steel and a lot of patience. Herrie started his journey in creating a Newtonian Dobsonian telescope five years ago. Astronomy is a passion that started as a child in his native Holland but grew momentum when he arrived in New Zealand 15 years
ago. “I’ve always been intrigued by the stars … there is just so much out there.” Herrie is a loyal member of the Nelson Astronomy Club and started out with a 16mm telescope from a second-hand store. “I really liked it but it was too small.” So Herrie got a bigger telescope. A friend of his was attempting to build a Dobsonian telescope but soon put it on the market. Herrie saw an opportunity. Armed with an instruction book-

let, Herrie set about constructing his pride and joy that now sits in the middle of his dining room in Stoke. The telescope’s design allows it to see faint deep sky objects such as nebulae and galaxies. It can easily be tilted and moved around. It also has a 40mm glass mirror that allows as much light in as possible.
When it was finally completed Herrie was relieved and rewarded himself by looking at the individual rings of Saturn, the detailed craters of the moon, and the thousands of stars that make up the Matariki cluster. “There is so much stuff to look at, like other galaxies that are 100 million light years away.” He says that astronomy is a fantastic hobby and a great way to explore the universe as well as one’s own construction skills. Herrie says he builds and sells saunas for a living but the tel-
escope was a totally different undertaking. “It’s not easy to make something like this,” he says. “But it’s amazing what you can do with a bit of wood and steel.” However, he is not done just yet. Herrie’s next mission is to hook his creation up to the digital world. This will allow him to find a constellation on an app on his phone and match it up with what the telescope is looking at. Then he will truly be looking at whatever stars he likes.

They came, they latched and they celebrated breastfeeding. More than twenty mums and their children, aged from six weeks to nearly four-years-old, filled the Victory Community Centre on Friday for the Big Latch On. The worldwide event is held every year as part of world breastfeeding week and aims to normalise breastfeeding as part of everyday life. Nelson mum Tessa Quayle and her 15-month-old daughter Nika came along to Friday’s event to support breastfeeding and “be amongst like-minded people”. She admits it’s not always easy for some mums. “At the start it’s always a bit tricky, but luckily for me it’s been pretty smooth sailing.” Encouraging words from organisers, such as “go for it” and “give baby some kai”, were echoed around the room, while mums were handed hot drinks, morning tea and spot prizes from Plunket. Debra Hardcastle, a lactation consultant from Nelson Bays Primary Health says she was thrilled with the turnout. “It’s nice for mums to have that physical contact, rather
than just social media.” She says they had “relaxed” the rules this year to include mums with the intention of breastfeeding and those who were unable to breastfeed but had expressed milk for their child. Friday’s event also coincided with Nelson Hospital’s maternity unit receiving their Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative accreditation certificate. The initiative aims to help raise the rate of exclusive breastfeeding for mothers leaving the hospitals around New Zealand and is now a Ministry of Health requirement in all maternity units. Currently, Nelson Hospital has an exclusive breastfeeding rate at discharge from the unit at around 82 per cent, and Debbie Fisher, Nelson Marlborough Health Associate Director of Midwifery, says that number continues to increase. “Once women leave the maternity unit they are also well supported by a number of breastfeeding-friendly organisations such as Plunket, Te Piki Oranga and the community breastfeeding groups, which support, promote and protect breastfeeding in Nelson.”

NEWS BROOK SANCTUARY WIN COURT CASE: A poison drop at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary will proceed after the High Court struck down a motion on Friday that aimed to stop the poison drop in the sanctuary this winter. The decision was in response to a legal challenge by the Brook Valley Community Group. The High Court’s decision confirms the legality of national pest control regulations and means the trust’s pest removal operation can proceed. On Monday morning the group announced that they would be filing an appeal to the decision.

A 150-year-old heritage building in The Wood is set to be transformed into a cafe. Sitting on the corner of Tasman and Grove streets, the building was home to the Organic Green Grocer for more than 20 years. But it was purchased last month by Alistair Middleton and Barb Lawson of Homes Created Ltd and Justin Fletcher of Red Box Architects. Barb says they are hoping to create a “community hub” for the suburban corner site. “There are no are cafes in The Wood - we’ve lived here for a long time and have always admired the building.” Alistair adds that there are “not enough” suburban cafes in Nelson, and they want to create something “a bit more than a coffee and counter type cafe”, with a working kitchen, serving local coffee. He says a cafe would be well supported by residents, backpackers and retirement villages. Barb says they plan to retain the original building, but the

Photo: Kate Russell. facade would be repainted and the inside would be gutted. “We’ll do the base fit out, and once we’ve got a tenant signed up for the cafe they can put their mark on it. “It’ll look classy, but it won’t stick out.” They will also be developing a number of colonialstyle townhouses on the adjacent land, which will “wrap around” the original building. Derelict garages on
Tasman St have already been pulled down to make way for up to five townhouses, and another townhouse on the Grove St side. Barb says they will be keeping them within the heritage look to blend in with the neighbouring properties. “They will be beautiful, architecturally designed homes,” she says. “It will look like a little village.” Once they find a tenant for
the cafe, Alistair says they will get things moving “as quickly as they can”. So far they have received nothing but positive comments about the development from locals. “They all seem pleased that the building is staying - I think the building has always been theirs,” says Alistair. “We’ve always been keen to renovate an old building – we just didn’t think it would be this one.”
DOC WINS AWARD FOR BUTTERFLY ERADICATION: The Department of Conservation has won the Supreme New Zealand Biosecurity Award for their great white butterfly eradication in Nelson. The award was presented last Wednesday night and DOC Deputy DirectorGeneral Operations Mike Slater says it was an honour to receive it. The butterfly was first spotted in 2010, prompting DOC rangers to perform over 263,000 searches of more than 29,000 properties, finding and removing the butterfly and its eggs, caterpillars and pupae. The programme ended last year after the department recorded no sign of the pest for 18 months.

Record store for the love of music and beer Charles Anderson Grant Smithies has spent half his life haunting the record stores of the world. He even met his wife, Jose Cachemaille, in one - scoping her out at the now defunct Everyman Records when she worked there on her university holidays. So when that store closed down there was a gaping hole in Grant’s heart. “We thought that this is what Nelson needs. It is part of town’s culture.” So they started looking for a space that was affordable enough for the pair to continue their day jobs - Jose as an artist

Grant was talking to friend who said: “Wouldn’t it be great if you could just crane in a hut into a space where people already went?” Grant knew that Eelco Boswijk already had such a hut in the Free House on Collingwood St. So he called him up and within a couple of weeks they were in there with crowbars tearing down a wall to create Nelson’s newest record store, and perhaps the only one in New Zealand housed inside a pub. The pair hope the store, named Family Jewels, will become a welcoming space for all people to come and learn about music.
“We hope women, teenagers, will ferret though. We are going to set up turntables in the summer so people can play music out here to their mates,” Grant says. They haven’t had an official opening yet but people have found out and have just started turning up. Family Jewels is open every Friday and Saturday from about 1pm, with longer hours in the summer. Bags of baby gear bargains will be up for grabs this weekend in Nelson. The Nelson District Parents Centre is holding their popular second-hand baby gear sale from 9am to 12.30pm this Saturday at the Masonic Lodge. Good quality clothing, books, toys, nursery equipment and ma-
ternity items will be spread across 28 tables. Tables were hot in demand this year, according to Nelson District Parents Centre president Annastashia Cambridge. “We have filled the hall to capacity – we had all tables sold and paid for a month out from the event.” Annastashia says, depending on the weather, they hope to have over 500 people through the door. “It’s a great way for families to
come together to on-sell their used clothing and children’s gear to others in the community, from one location. “Prices are always affordable which is important for many families and last year we saw entire families come along.” There will be entertainment from the Kahurangi Irish Dance School, Nelson Volunteer Fire Department and Flossie Balloons, as well as coffee and a professional bake stall.
Goodie bags are on offer for the first 150 people through the doors as well as raffles to win three professionally-made nappy cakes – and a professionally-made baby themed cake for those who prefer a real cake. The Nelson District Parents Centre has been supporting parents for over 50 years with pregnancy, childbirth and raising infants and toddlers, and Annastashia says it is an important event for them. “We heavily rely on our fundrais-
ing events and a wonderful team of volunteers to keep the centre running,” she says. “Without events like this and the support of the community, we wouldn’t be able to offer our parenting courses and other resources to families in the Nelson and Tasman regions at an affordable level.” The Baby Gear Sale will be held at the Masonic Lodge Rooms, 107 Niles St, on Saturday, August 12, 9am to 12:30pm. Nelmac proud to help with new Great Walk Nelmac is proud to be involved in creating a new Great Walk through the Paparoa National Park, which is set to be built as a memorial to the 29 men who died in the 2010 Pike River Mine tragedy. The Department of Conservation called for expressions of interest from contractors back in October last year and Nelmac decided to put itself forward, stretching outside its traditional Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough boundary, to be part of the West Coast project. Paparoa Track is the name chosen by the Pike River Families Committee for the track that will run between Blackball and Punakaiki, while the 9km section of the Great Walk leading from the Paparoa Track to the Pike River Mine site will be named the Pike29 Memorial Track. While WestReef Services will be completing two sections of the track and the Department of Conservation one section, Nelmac staff have been awarded a 15 kilometre section, including the nine kilometre Pike29 Memorial Track. As a whole, the Great Walk will be around 65 kilometres long, with two 20-bunk huts to be installed at Moonlight Tops and Pororari. “We’re looking forward to getting started, it’s
an exciting time and it’s something we’re really proud to be associated with,” says Nelmac’s divisional leader for environmental services, Warren McLean. Nelmac will have two teams of three working on the Pike29 Memorial Track and say they are set to start this week. Because this section has been part of the Pike River Mine site, access has been blocked by a security gate which means the bush has remained untouched for over a decade, making it about as pristine as you can get. “We’ve got a really good team of guys, most of them are keen mountain bikers and have done a lot of trail building as well, so very skilled, passionate people who will deliver a really good result,” says Nelmac’s business development manager, Andy Evans. “They’re also passionate about the environment, a lot of them are conservation rangers so it’s about building this track carefully so nothing of significance is damaged,” says Warren. “The whole idea is to establish a track that looks like it’s always been there.” The Great Walk is expected to be completed in April 2019 and will offer fantastic views of the West Coast’s native bush for walkers and mountain bikers Advertorial.

Plans for new multi-million dollar hospice building released Nelson Tasman Hospice needs the community's help in creating a new purpose-built home in Stoke. The organisation, which is dedicated to caring for those in the region with life-limiting illnesses, has just released plans for a new $11.5 million building. Work on the biggest project in its 30-year history will start on the Suffolk Rd site next month with the building scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018. The hospice will be putting $7.5
million towards the project. This includes a mixture of reserves, investments, assets, bequests and donations. Grants and paymentin-kind support is estimated to make up another $1.5 million. As the hospice receives no government funding towards capital projects, it will be looking for the remaining $2.5 million from the community. Gibbons Construction, Irving Smith Architects and Canopy Landscape Architects have been working on the project.

Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke said he and the team were excited about the new building. "We know that our population is growing and getting older and demand for our free services has increased 28 per cent over the past four years. "There is an absolute need for the care we provide and with this new building we will be able to give more of the same excellent, specialist palliative care, plus have onsite clinics.
The hospice, which cares for over 155 patients at any one time, is moving because of the planned expansion of Manuka Street Hospital. The proposed design for the new hospice includes 10-bed units, providing a better configuration of patient rooms; consulting rooms, and space for families to meet and spend time together, plus outdoor areas. Firefighters to battle Canadian blaze Jessie Johnston The region’s finest firefighters are on their way to Canada to join the battle against out-ofcontrol infernos. Graham Staples, Cory Rusbatch, Bruce Hampton, Matt Pearless and Steve Packer make up the local crew and are a combination of Tasman Volunteer Rural Fire Force members and Silviculture forestry workers. “It’s a pretty neat experience, being able to go over and help out and see another country, we’ll be doing the same sort of thing we do here,” says Matt. Thousands of people have been evacuated from western Canada, with British Columbia suffering the worst damage from a succession of blazes. “I’ve been to Australia twice to help, but it will be totally different fire behaviour in Canada,” says Graham. “In Australia, we had to actually steer the fire around the settlements because they had no water, so I have no idea what Canada is going to be like.”
Their deployment to Canada will be for one month, starting off with two to three days of orientation when they arrive in Vancouver. “One of the reasons they have been called in is because the existing resources in Canada are getting tired and over-stretched, so the crew will be on the fire, but it could be a running fire, or it could be mopping up, which is effectively taking over a fire that’s been held or contained and then starting the work of putting it out,” says Ian Reade, principal rural fire officer for Waimea Rural Fire Authority.

Fundraising for murder, mayhem and betrayal Charles Anderson Journalist

The year is 1866 and New Zealand’s most infamous murder is about to take place. Fast forward almost 150 years and the story of Maungatapu is soon to be immortalised on the stage at the Nelson Arts Festival. Conceived by local playwright Justin Eade, the story is based on the confessions of gang leader Richard Burgess after five men were murdered on the Maungatapu track. Eade says he is excited about the prospect of putting on a full production of the play after it running as a piece in development at last year’s festival. “I’m really happy with where it’s at. It will likely be tweaked again when we are in rehearsals but overall I think it will come together really well.” After feedback from last year’s reading of the play at the arts festival, the play has expanded from its initial two person cast
into four – made up of Cam West, Nick Kemplen, Pete Coate and Daniel Allan. Eade says the plan is to tour the play around the region after the arts festival, but they need to fundraise to make that a reality. They have started a Boosted campaign to raise $6000 for the shows which will travel to Murchison, Picton, Blenheim, Takaka and Havelock in November. “There are quite a few costs involved and it’s to make sure everything is looked after to create a really strong show.” To help the show, search for “Maungatapu” on boosted.org. nz. All funds raised will go towards accommodation, food and transport cost for the tour. “We have written, tested and developed. We have begged, borrowed and bartered. But sometimes only actual money will do. We need your help to take our story on the road.” Maungatapu premieres at the Nelson Arts Festival on October 16 and 17.

Community key to success Sinead Ogilvie Summit marketing manager 25 years after opening the first Summit office is a great opportunity to reflect on our current position as market leaders, selling more property in the top of the South Island than any other company. This particular project is close to our hearts as we continue to find ways to help the NMRH raise vital funds. The launch of the 'Helicopter House' will be on Friday, 1 September with building commencing on Saturday, 2 September. Crew from members of Certified Builders will complete the build over eight weekends, with the Summit team onsite too to help the public follow the progress and showcase the home to interested buyers. Refugee drivers get their licences Jessie Johnston Reporter

Gaining a drivers’ license can be a life changing expereince for former refugees now living in Nelson. So it was a celebration on Saturday night when 19 new drivers successfully completed a programme dedicated to giving them a new-found freedom. The Nelson’s Refugee Driver Training Programme was rolled out in Nelson in March last year and is delivered to former refugees by Red Cross’ "Pathways to Employment". Since its creation, the programme has had 44 learner drivers pass their restricted licences in Nelson, with 19 successful learners so far this year. The awards night, held at the Victory Community Centre, included several speakers who congratulated the graduating drivers on their achievement. Past learners, from myriad backrounds, culture and countries, spoke about how achieving their

Photo: Jessie Johnston. restricted and full licenses had changed their lives. They said being able to drive allowed them to do the simple things in life that many often take for granted. From dropping the kids off at school, doing the groceries, getting to work and socialising, all
the former refugees said that the programme had opened up doors to them that had previously been closed. Police Senior Sergeant Scott Richardson pointed out that many of the graduating drivers now knew the road rules better than many Kiwi drivers.
Programme mentor Tim Ward talked about his experiences teaching former students and how much they got out of it. Refugee Driver Training coordinator Margo Ruhen said the programme was also on the lookout for new mentors. “It’s an amazing feeling, I had
some mentors say to me, ‘I just had the driving test with a student and I felt like an anxious mother,’ because they’ve become so invested. "It’s a 12 to 16-week time commitment, twice a week, so they get to know their learner well and guide them on that journey.” The main goal is to ultimately help the refugees get jobs, however the programme has many other spinoffs including ensuring everybody is safer on the road. Prospective mentors needed to have had their full New Zealand drivers licence for more than two years, a clean driving record and pass an obligatory police check. The training is done in conjunction with professional instructors and mentors are paired with a former refugee, based on their availability throughout the week. Immigrating to New Zealand at 46 with his wife and six daughters in 1855, Edmund Buxton, an “independent gentleman”, began to influence the settlement. Involved in many commercial enterprises from
horticulture, home-ware stores to insurance, his name extends beyond the well-known car park. It was he, who built and developed two of the areas enduring estates of historic significance, ‘Broadgreen’ in Stoke and ‘Holton’ in Ruby Bay.
Imagine it is 3.30am in the morning, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is pitch black and there is a 3 metre swell pounding on the hull of your 20-metre yacht. The wind has just changed and five young sea cadets are tasked with jibbing the sail. “That was just a really incredible moment to watch,” says Steph Chitty, who accompanied the sailors on their 10-day trip from Auckland to Fiji. At times, they were left to run and navigate the boat by themselves with only slight oversight from the adults on the trip. “It was really satisfying to take those five kids and see them bond and work together,” Steph says. She says the group were all sad to leave each other. “They really stretched themselves and really challenged themselves.”

Hockey season nears conclusion Nelson’s top hockey teams are getting down to the businesses end of the season at both club and representative level, with the Nelson men’s team winning the Maadi Cup at the weekend and the women contesting the Pope Shield in Greymouth this weekend. The Nelson men’s representative team beat West Coast 3-1 at the Westurf Stadium in Greymouth at the weekend to win the Maadi Cup. Patrick O’Connor-Lea opened the scoring in the first quarter while Cameron Sinclair and Patrick scored second half goals to secure the win after West Coast had levelled at 1-1. Nelson had earlier beaten Buller 5-2 and Marlborough 6-1, while West Coast beat Marlborough 7-1 and Buller 3-1 to finish second. Marlborough defeated Buller 4-2
to finish third while Buller was fourth. Four Nelson players, Patrick, Hugh Hendrickson, Cameron and Paul Muncaster, were named in the tournament team. It was the 66th time the teams have contested the Maadi Cup. The Nelson women’s team head to Greymouth this weekend when the A team will contest the Pope Shield and the B team will play in the Gladstone Cup. Nelson’s top club teams are also approaching the critical stage of the season, with just two roundrobin games remaining before the finals, which are to be played on August 19. Tasman has an unassailable lead of 26 points and will play either Stoke (15 points) or Waimai (14 points) in the men’s premier final, while Tasman and Federal will clash in the women’s final.

Vern Mardon says he isn’t a big gambler, but it might be financially prudent for him to reconsider. Vern has just won the Nelson Weekly Super Rugby tipping competition to go with his three Mitre 10 Cup tipping wins. The competition features around a dozen local businesspeople with their tips for each game featuring in each edition of the Weekly. For Vern, this year’s Super Rugby win was his first for that competition, but he usually finishes in the top three of either competition. He says he was delighted to win the Super Rugby competition. “This one means a lot, I really wanted this one.” Vern is well known in Nelson’s sporting scene for his contribution to athletics but he says he is also a keen rugby follower. “I’ve always kept a close eye on rugby results and, although I’ve been in Nelson for 40 years, I’m still a Taranaki boy.” He says he takes the tipping competition seriously, reading articles and looking at past results. “I look at it very analytically. I try to take the emotion out of it.” So, as a master tipper, who does Vern think will win this year’s competition? Ironically, the two teams he has an emotional attachment to. “I think the Makos will be very good this year and Taranaki, I’m hearing very good things about them. I’d be delighted if they did well again, it was fantastic to see those two teams in the final a couple of years ago. Great for the provinces.” He says he’s definitely signed up for the Mitre 10 Cup tipping competition which starts next week. “It’s the best form of advertising I’ve ever done. People talk to me on the street about it and come up to me. For the small cost each week it’s definitely been a good thing,” says the insurance broker.

The latest crop of rugby league players will get their shot at glory, after making the South Island representative squad. Todd Moore, Tyler Edwards and Rakoia Dooley were all selected for the 30-man South Island squad, picked from an under-17 regional tournament last month where they represented the Tasman Titans. The pathway from the under-17 South Island tournament to the national tournament was the same pathway that Marvin Curry used to secure a National Rugby League contract with Gold Coast Titans. Titans under-17 coach Tomas Ogilvie says it is a steep learning curve for the players as there is no regular competition for them in Nelson. “They have one tournament before heading to nationals where they will be playing in front of NRL scouts, so it’s a big jump.” Tyler and Rakoia both attend Nelson College while Todd goes to Waimea College. All three play
rugby union regularly and say getting used to rugby league has taken some adjustment. The Titans team was only pulled together weeks before the South Island tournament. The Titans comfortably lost its first two games, against West Coast and Canterbury – two regions that play regular club league – before a narrow loss to Otago and a win over Southland. All three said they enjoyed representing the region and are hoping to make the final cut before the national tournament. Tomas says that will involve a lot of work. “Most of the players selected in the squad are from Christchurch so will be training together during the week. Our guys have to train here so I’m taking them for a few sessions just to keep them fit and keep the skills up.” Tomas says their selection shows there is a pathway for young rugby league players in Nelson. “It shows that if you take your opportunities you can make it." He also wanted to thank the businesses and supporters who allowed the Titans to travel to the tournament.
